Am I the only one?

I got the same message when I tried using google sms search (466453) too today. So sad :'( I really like this service.

Some users only have voice + sms enabled (no data plan). Google SMS search was my link to information on the go. Please consider restoring this service.

Same here. I use it at least once a day first thing in the morning to check weather since I know opening my laptop will distract me with Facebook and email and blogs..
Google, please bring it back.

This is terrible. I did not know this would happen. Is there an announcement from Google besides the text SMS search has been shutdown? Why did they do this?

I got this same message texting Weather Montreal, nooo! Please keep this service! There were a ton of features I didn't use, but the weather information, dictionary, Web search, and finding a business were the best!! And the translation feature, and measurement conversion! Please bring this service back!

Closing products always involves tough choices, but we do think very hard about each decision and its implications for our users. Streamlining our services enables us to focus on creating beautiful technology that will improve people’s lives.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Roger Huff||5/10/13 9:11 AM|
I too was very disappointed last night to receive the rather brusque
"SMS search has been shutdown. You can continue tomessage.
This morning I went hunting for the reason.
The SMS search service is most helpful to the many folks who don't have 'web enabled' mobile devices or who are unable to afford the generally outrageous data plan fees charged by mobile carriers.
While perhaps not a 'beautiful technology' I submit that the SMS search service does in fact 'improve peoples lives.' If Google has evidence to the contrary, that evidence should be shared so it can be commented on.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||dadamn||5/10/13 9:54 AM|
Google's decision to shut down the SMS search service only serves to widen the information divide between the haves and have-nots. I could always get some info via the very simple text message -- an address and phone number for a business can be very handy in a pinch, or when traveling. For those of us who can't afford a data plan or smartphone, or for those who aren't techno-savvy enough to navigate the web on a cellphone or learn a new "app world," the SMS has helped us to function in a society that increasingly assumes everyone worth reaching has a smartphone.
Google, I'll challenge you to take a look at this service from a social-justice lens. Please cut the crap about "beautiful technology that will improve people's lives" when you're only talking about improving things for the techno-elite.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Amine Faustin||5/10/13 10:08 AM|
I agree with all the other comments, especially:
"Google, I'll challenge you to take a look at this service from a social-justice lens. Please cut the crap about 'beautiful technology that will improve people's lives' when you're only talking about improving things for the techno-elite."
Especially coming from Google, I would think Google could create a better quality BS statement than that.
Another heartbroken user
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||mschribr||5/10/13 10:54 AM|
Last year Google earned $30 billion profit on $50 billion revenue. They have 50 thousand employees. I want to know what percent of their resources would go to maintain the sms search. Do you they need more than 1 full time person just to maintain an existing system? This is a drop in the bucket for Google. The bad PR would cost them more than keeping sms search.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Autumn Hudson||5/10/13 11:40 AM|
I am very disappointed in google for getting rid of the sms search. I will have to find out if there is another site that does something similar. The sms search was convenient and helpful. Now I have to get on the internet which takes forever! Forget that. :/
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Lynn Katz Danzig||5/10/13 11:46 AM|
I agree completely that it is a terrible decision. Not everyone has a smart phone and it was a great way to find things - business address, phone number, etc. without having to pay for extra services.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||sys_mom||5/10/13 11:50 AM|
I too was in the habit of using google sms all of the time. When I was working in IT we never yanked a product without giving our clients a heads up. I guess companies do not value their customers and clients the way they used to. wth?
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||sys_mom||5/10/13 12:09 PM|
I would use Google sms and folks would say "you have a smart phone?" Naw I use Google sms and here is how it works....... Oh and it even gives you definitions. You would never believe how many people I have helped by showing them how to use Google sms. I do not have a smartphone with a data plan. I do not want one. I travel all over the US and used Google sms to find free wifi, Starbucks, gas stations, tire repair, RV parks omg just everything. I think Google should rethink this decision. SMS may not be some bright shiny new technology but hey it still improved the daily experience of many people. Everyone should txt "where is my sms service" to 466453 every day multiple times.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||moparisthebest||5/10/13 12:20 PM|
While the google.com SMS website is down, it appears the google.ca website is up:
Along with the 'demo' which still returns results like we are used to, if I thought they'd leave it up I'd write some code to receive text messages at an email address, and send it back as a text message response. Is it coming down too?
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||akd04001||5/10/13 12:24 PM|
It's sad to realize that a company who you thought was on your side, giving you all possible ways to communicate and find the answer to things you need,is alas not on your side and shows no respect toward you in the end. We were all blindsided by the shutdown and that is one of the main reasons why we are all commenting here today. No, I don't think they should have ever taken this service away, but to give us no option to voice our opinion before they made the change is a mistake companies make and pay the price for in the end. It's upsetting to see a company change for the worse, not for the better.

|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||sys_mom||5/10/13 1:27 PM|
"Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful."
But only IF you are rich enough to have a smartphone with a data plan. Or otherwise have internet access available 24/7. Hello Google not everyone in America can afford data plans or internet service. If they are lucky enough to own a cell phone then they found your sms search function to be a very useful tool.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Kameron Norberg||5/10/13 1:28 PM|
I can't believe Google would do something like this all of a sudden! It was such a wonderful service! I bet that one reason they did this is because the people who work at Google get paid too much and all of them have smartphones and think, "Pfft, no one even uses this service anymore, let's just get rid of it." C'mon Google! Help us non-smartphone users out! Not all of us are as rich as we would like to be! Please bring it back! Maybe if someone would take a couple minutes to write up a petition, they might bring it back. I would write one, but I suck at writing petitions...
Also, why would google.ca have something that google.com does not? That makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever to me.
But if someone would be willing enough to start a petition, you can always create one here: http://www.ipetitions.com/start-petition and then just give us here the link. That would be amazing and we would be forever in your debt.
Sincerely disappointed an deeply saddened,
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Mathieu Gouin||5/10/13 1:46 PM|
Wow, thanks for all the response. This proves I was not the only one to find this service useful. It is very sad. Hopefully, we can make enough noise to wake them up?
Google seems to be in a slashing mode recently. To name a few: Goog411 (a while ago, but was very useful!), Google Reader...
Maybe SMS is not profitable enough for Google because it's hard to insert targetted ads in SMS... Just a thought ;)
Google, you are not heading in the right direction.
Also, I confirm that I am in Canada and the SMS search does not work even if the google.ca page is still there.

Streamlining this service definitely does not improve my life nor anyone else who depends on the use of this feature.
I have come to depend on this service and I believe there are many others like me who are upset that Google has removed it.
Please, please, PLEASE bring it back!!!
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||hmsimha||5/10/13 2:44 PM|
I used this service all the time. The removal of this service smacks of some kind of agenda, perhaps to reduce the utility of non-smartphones because smartphones provide google with better data. Does anyone know of a usable alternative?
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||sys_mom||5/10/13 2:44 PM|
Who do we complain to about this? You have marked this topic as complete. I think the other comment writers on this thread would disagree. Where was the heads up from Google that this service was going away? Where was the request for input from the user community? Someone at Google needs to set up training for the employees in how to ease customers into a change. If I had done something like this to my IT clients I would have lost my job.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Micah4||5/10/13 2:50 PM|

|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Dyerra||5/10/13 5:51 PM|
I am so disgusted by this change, especially without notifying the customers who used this as a daily and integral part of their lives. When I woke up this morning, my power was out, so I could not watch the news or get online. I still wanted to check the weather forecast for today. I do not own, nor can I afford a smart phone with a data plan. I was quite dismayed to find that a service that had worked only yesterday no longer worked today. I was even more disgusted to find that Google assured me that I could "search Google.com from any mobile device." This seriously makes me want to not use Google for anything anymore. I used to feel very positively about Google's business practices and ethics, but this has tainted my viewpoint.
The response of Google staff does little to reassure me. Had they thought about how the decision impacts their users, maybe there would have been an explanation on Google's website. I doubt the decision was made this morning to shut down the program. What makes the most users angry is that Google provided no advanced notice. Had we known in advance (it would have been easy, they could have sent an extra text with all search responses for about a month), we might have been unhappy. But this was sprung upon us. It is not sound business practice to take away services with no advanced notice. Even if there had been a news release online, or a notification on the Google website, it would have been better than the way the removal of the service was actually handled.
If this is an extra push to try to make users pay for data plans on Google phones, I am quite annoyed. Google is a huge company with large profits. How could providing this one service have been hurting their company? Furthermore, most of the people using this service will NOT be able to switch to a data plan. So the small percentage of users who will switch to a data plan who are using a Google phone (so that Google may be experiencing a profit, or making money off of ads?) does not seem that it would be high enough to cause Google to have any increase in profit margin.
Google staff, you have marked this question as "completed." But for me and many others here, it will never be completed. Our view of Google as a company and its business practices is now tainted. The only way you can earn our loyalty back would be to reinstate this service.
Finally, on a personal note, my view of Google became dimmer when I realized how impossible it was to contact Google directly. The chances of a Google staff member reading this "completed" topic are probably fairly slim. However, I see that if I post this in a new thread, it will be marked "duplicate." Good companies communicate with their users. From now on, I will be using non-Google services a little more, and Google a little less.
So Google? Thanks for the memories.

VERY COLD-BLOODED ACTION BY GOOGLE, SHUTTING DOWN OF SMS SEARCH. I have simple cell phone plan with only minutes & text and regularly used the SMS Search feature and now, they brutally just cut-off the feature, no warning or anthing.
The Google response is so canned & generic. They can hide under the Google bureaucracy and just disregard our inquiries. Does ANYONE at Google have any sensitivity about this? Streamlining services by axing SMS Search? In the big picture, how much is SMS Search a huge burden to Google, financially?
These are difficult economic times. Google, please have some empathy that not everyone can afford bells & whistles smart phones. PLEASE RECONSIDER and RESTORE SMS SEARCH ... PLEASE???

Why would you do this to consumers? I worked for Verizon Wireless for over a year and recommended this service to everyone I spoke to. Many of my customers used 411 service on a regular basis. Thank you for the 4Info tip. I used it to check the weather in various locations. Similar to G-sms text "w zipcode" or "w city,ST" or "w area code" to 44636 and it returns a 5 day forecast. I could not get their movie info to work. Text "Dodgers score" worked so did "Spurs score" Dodgers lost to Miami but the Spurs won. 4info tells me I can reply with a 1 to receive Spurs updates.

google sms service has sentimental value to me.When our basement was flooding in the rainstorm of 2010 in Massachusetts, I had to stay up through the night making sure our make-shift wet vac/sump pump system was keeping up with the deluge of incoming water. I had just learned of google sms and was passing away the hours delighted to search for all kinds of information with the service. It was like a bright spot in those dreary nights. I don't want to see it go away. There are too many of us who want it back. Please get back to the board room and reverse your decision....We are praying that you hear our plea!

It's hard to sell adds on a SMS / text screen. Google obviously saw that the SMS version may have been gaining traction and taking some percentage of ad revenue away, making the decision an easy choice.

Its too bad - I really was liking SMS googling.

|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||linusti||5/12/13 9:12 AM|
I'll challenge you to cut the crap yourself.
The only reason someone has a non-smartphone these days with access to inexpensive (yes) data is because someone's deluding themselves that it's expensive or they've chosen to not take advantage of plans from providers such as:
Boost Mobile - $55/mo unlimited; 3/day if you don't want to do that.
There's others. The biggest problem with your line of thought here is that the base talk/text plans are not all that much "cheaper" than the plans I'm listing. Seriously. I did the math on my Mother's "cheap" plan with T-Mobile and she was only saving $7 over what she could get with one of these sorts of plans. If you're unable to manage that, you've got deeper problems going on and probably ought to be worrying about something other than whether or not you can get an SMS of a small bit of information.

wendysv40: They have an SMS service?
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||wendysv40||5/12/13 9:59 AM|
Don't make assumptions and jump to incredibly inaccurate, nonsense conclusions. The post had nothing to do with having a smartphone or unlimited talk/text time. I challenge you to refrain from your expletives, and spend your time crafting a more thoughtful and factual response. Some of us actually use Google 411 when a phone number is needed and you CANT surf the web because you are in a text-free driving zone (yes, Virginia, smartphones have voice recognition capabilities and it works marvelously in blue-tooth enabled vehicles).
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Bill Giese||5/12/13 10:18 AM|
First up - none of the providers you listed are Verizon MVNO's. So, for many of us - they are useless.
Second - for $30, PagePlus gets us Verizon coverage, with plenty of minutes/SMS. Occasional data as well.
Lastly - providers aside, the main reason many of us use "dumb phones" is because they are superior to smart phones in many respects. Like for instance...talking on the phone. Or battery life that lasts up to a week. Or durability. Or replacement cost when broken/damaged.

|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||mschribr||5/12/13 12:09 PM|
The question is not, which is cheaper or more expensive. The question is why pay 1 penny for something you do not need. Why should I waste my money on a smart phone data plan when I do not need one? I only need business addresses and phone numbers, weather forecast, word definitions, flight information, product prices, movie info, currency conversion, sports scores, stock quotes, driving directions, current time in any city, foreign word translation and general internet search results? Why should I pay for a data plan when I get everything I need with Google SMS search?

I'm CEO of DOTGO, which provides access to the internet using SMS.
Good news: you can still access google's search service using the short code DOTCOM (368266). Just text "google" + your search term to DOTCOM (368266).
You can actually access a bunch of websites by texting the website's domain name to DOTCOM (368266). For example, try "cnn" or "nytimes" or "yahoo" or "gmail". And if you have your own website, you can use DOTGO to make your own website SMS-accessible (visit our website dotgo.com to find out how or send me an email).
I can't guarantee how long we'll able to provide access, but we will as long as we're technically able!
Happy Googling! :)
Text "dotgo" to DOTCOM (368266) to find out more
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Kyle Tozier||5/12/13 6:37 PM|
This is great news! I will check out your service immediately. But what do you meant by "technically able"? What limitations do you foresee that will disallow you from continuing your service?
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Stefan Gromoll||5/12/13 6:48 PM|
We'll provide access as long as we are able to get access to the data--if we can't access the data any more (or if Google doesn't keep it up to date) then there won't be anything we can do to keep the service up.
But even if google.com were no longer accessible, the DOTCOM (368266) short code will continue to be available to access to other domain names.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Kyle Tozier||5/12/13 6:52 PM|

|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||adamrgriff||5/12/13 10:28 PM|
What this really means is that Google is shutting down all the services they can't figure out how to monetize, meaning sell ads on. Look what is happeneing to Google Reader. Same deal. Google is now focused on providing people services that make their life better, as long as there is profit in it, which is their prerogative as a company. It's just not the same philosophy as they once had. They seem to not realize that keeping these loss leaders up and running will keep people in the Google-verse when they look to use products and services Google can monetize, like pc search, and not drive them to Bing.

This is highly unfortunate. I don't have a smartphone/data plan - No desire to get one, either. But google SMS search was GREAT for finding phone numbers and business addresses on my dumb phone. Simple and effective. I know it couldn't have been a money-maker, but it was genuinely helpful. I hope they will bring it back. Not everyone has/wants smartphones :-\

|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||TimothyLeeAR||5/13/13 7:04 AM|
It's difficult to square the loss of Google SMS Search with Google's motto of "Do no harm, only good." SMS has developed into a public safety protocol, which Google is now no longer supporting.
I used the SMS search for weather updates when backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. With no place to charge phones for days on end and cell coverage spotty most of the time, SMS Search was usually the only way to get a daily weather update.
Now, I get to go around the Internet and tell everyone that linked to my blog article and Pinterest pins on SMS SEarch to remove the content. Joy!

I would pay for this service! How shortsighted. Please don't assume only people with dumb phones use this. I have a smartphone, but I live in an area that doesn't have very fast data. It's faster to use Google SMS than it is to use an app or a browser. I use Google SMS at least once a week and often several times a week or more, especially when I'm traveling. Come on, Google, please!

"we do think very hard about each decision and its implications for our users."
however, it seems you don't consider the implications for your business when you alienate your users. shutting down a service that was clearly enjoyed by many, without any warning, is a bad business practice. pretending that it never happened by returning a 404 on the link to the service is bad business. i was shocked and dismayed to discover that it suddenly no longer existed, especially when i had used it on a regular basis.
"Streamlining our services enables us to focus on creating beautiful technology that will improve people’s lives."
i agree, as others have mentioned, that it seems you are focusing on technology that allows for ease of monetary gain. not everyone is interested in your "beautiful technology"; many of us liked the homely technology of sms search!
i have a smartphone with a data plan, but only because i am on a family plan. the only thing i use the data for is checking the traffic when i am going to work. i personally hate smartphones. in fact, i don't even really like computers. i DID, however, like being able to locate companies and see the weather WITHOUT having to use a web browser.
google shutting down sms search does not mean that i will start using the search feature built into my smartphone, it just means i will have to utilize alternate search options.
this was a bad move, google. you have shown great disinterest in public relations with those customers who were utilizing this service. people would at least be less disgruntled had you given us notice. you may have discovered, had you asked, that people would be willing to pay for this service (assuming the cost was reasonable).
instead, you made a choice to "streamline" your services. the google definition of streamline is as follows: "Design or provide with a form that presents very little resistance to a flow of air or water, increasing speed and ease of movement."
what resistance to your bottom line was the sms search feature? how much could it possibly have cost you, when compared to your annual profit margin? you seem to forget that what it HAS done is created a bad taste in the mouths of all of your customers who used it. all of us will now have a different view of you as a company, and that will alter how we promote your services as well as how (or if) we use them.

|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||coastalblue984||5/13/13 6:26 PM|
Yea, the "beautiful technology" line was at best silly, at worst patronizing. I kind of chuckled at how silly it sounded.
"We didn't feel the usage of the service merited continuing commitment to its maintenance. The engineers of this product have been retasked to maintaining and developing new products and services." would have sounded a lot better.

I was very displeased to get a generic response to my SMS query from Google yesterday. I used the Google SMS for many things, including web searches, language translations, currency conversions, as a calculator, to check the weather, and for directions. While I am very disappointed in Google's decision to discontinue this service, I am delighted by my discovery of the service DotGo. It is much more robust than Google ever was and still completely free.

|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Jessica Fernandez Aguilar||5/14/13 5:49 PM|
I question how Google would do such a thing like this. I'm sorry but I can not afford a 30$ monthly subscription plan and I relied on Google SMS on a daily basis. Just like internet Is a part of peoples daily life Google SMS was apart of mine. It gave me access to directions when I would be lost, phone numbers and addresses when I desperately need to make a phone call and now I have nothing to turn to for help. I am very disappointed. Smh.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||leslie beslie||5/15/13 11:07 AM|
I completely understand why Google disabled the service, it wasn't generating enough revenue, and that is fine. I am upset, but I understand. However, providing absolutely no warning to such a niche product with no alternatives does not seem very Google-like. At least have some courtesy to give a warning so us heavy users of the service can figure out something else to do - even just a week would have been helpful.

I also agree with the statement regarding social justice: "Google, I'll challenge you to take a look at this service from a social-justice lens. Please cut the crap about 'beautiful technology that will improve people's lives' when you're only talking about improving things for the techno-elite."
I know many people who have difficulty affording a cell phone, much less a data plan. I'm a broke grad student myself and can't pay an additional $30/mo.
Google, please restore this service and stick to your mission statement of making information universally accessible - do not leave out those of us who are unable to afford the kind of service now required.

I also feel sad and disappointed about this. We have neither interest in getting a smart phone, nor would it be financially responsible for us to do so, and the SMS search has been extremely valuable to us in a few tight situations. It's too bad there was no advance warning, and I wonder how much it actually would cost Google to maintain this service. If there's any chance of bringing it back, I'd love to see that happen! But we lived before we had this, and I guess we'll probably go on living now.

I often used google sms search several times a day (weather, business listings, sports scores, movie times, flight info). I still can't believe it. And I don't get it. Is it really that much extra for google to keep up this service? Isn't the transfer of search data to sms all automated anyways? I can't believe there's a room full of people working on this - so why did they need to streamline?! I know google's trying to create "beautiful technology that will improve people’s lives" (aka smartphone users' lives), but what about us little guys who don't have data plans?
PLEASE BRING BACK GOOGLE SMS SEARCH.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Ryan Shaffer||5/20/13 8:18 AM|
It's unfortunate that creating "beautiful technology" also involves alienating lots and lots of people who either refuse to pay for the expensive data plans and smartphones (or simply can't afford them).

|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Diana Barta||5/25/13 4:10 PM|
Can you please explain to me what your answer means? You are "creating beautiful technology that will improve people's lives?" How are you achieving this by shutting down a little service for all of us non-smart phone users? YOU ARE SELLING YOUR SOUL! That's what your doing. Google probably got a lot of money by the smart phone companies to shut this service down , just like somebody already mentioned, . Also, just like already mentioned, to shut this down without any warning - how is this providing SERVICE to me? That is so unprofessional. It is a sad world, when people don't matter anymore and companies are just trying to manipulate us into buying smartphones. I have used your SMS service several times a day and have told hundreds of people about this service. Whatever reason made you shut this down - it was NOT to IMPROVE ANY OF OUR LIVES. Shame on you GOOGLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||sim bal||5/25/13 5:34 PM|
By disabling the SMS, you have effectively FORCED me to upgrade my cell phone... This is really not at all a good move. MANY MANY of us rely on that as we have older phones that aren't android or app compatible and don't wish to change that. That's why all the big cell carriers carry these phones right today for upgrades and replacements. I can't say it LOUDLY enough - BRING IT BACK!!!
I speak for all 6 of my family, as well as the obvious number of negative responses on the post thread, WE ARE NOT A HAPPY PUBLIC WITH THIS DECISION!!!!!!!!!!! May be time to investigate Bing - Because Its Not Google. I'm sure others will follow suit. You almost had my loyalty, but this is a game changer.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||efactor||5/26/13 5:14 AM|
Don't worry, you don't have to upgrade yet. We've got you covered: http://s.gnoss.us/googlesms
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||sim bal||5/26/13 9:02 AM|
Listen, speaking for the over 45 set, we don't care about the cost, we just DON'T LIKE SMART PHONES OR TOUCH SCREENS!!! We're the one's they keep these phones available new for, and there's a WHOLE BUNCH OF US!! They call us Baby Boomers, because there's so many of us. We like the phones we have just fine and see no sound reason to change to something we don't like. We take care of them, we don't drop them or use them in place of our brain. Stop ASSuming unless you're also too young to know the problem with ASSuming things....
As for the SMS, given the ads we're bombarded with EVERYWHERE else from Google, like them or not, could we at least have a super helpful tool from the company who claims to have our "experience" at heart?? A quick address, or weather check, doesn't even begin to use appreciable data. Enhance and Enrich our tech-lives? not when you eliminate services that are widely used and keep the Google name right in our daily use. Right there is advertising.
BAD MOVE GOOGLE
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Pat Mack||5/27/13 10:21 AM|
Thank you to Google for having provided SMS at no charge. It has been a great help to people like me who are owners of "dumb" phones.
As I am sure you have heard, many of us do not, or cannot, afford to own smartphones. The availability of Google SMS has helped me out in many situations where I am unable to access information any other way. Taking this service away may force many SMS users to spend money on new phones or upgraded service that they cannot easily afford.
If this is an issue of ad revenue, please be aware that many of us DO use Google when we are on our computers at home and work. So, we do see those advertisements. We are not complete freeloaders.
I hope that Google will reconsider their decision and restore SMS service to users in the USA.

Here is a summary of my experiences on Google SMS alternatives:
I am grateful for Google SMS, Google 411, and Google Voice.
Meanwhile I think there is some reasonable alternatives out there.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||efactor||5/28/13 6:36 AM|
Great summary of the various services out there (including ours). This is also very good info for us from a customer service standpoint. I had no idea people would want to be able to check their emails via text message. We'll have to see how to go about doing that, as that requires a pretty involved authentication process of sending and receiving passwords and usernames.
As for news, we plan to add a news API soon. However, if you use our service and typed something like "top news stories + date" I'm sure it will return relevant results. The downside is it will only return a few and then will give you a link to click to read more. Sending an entire news story via text message seems clunky and inefficient. However, I'd be interested in hearing other users' experience with news search via SMS.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||efactor||5/30/13 7:50 AM|
I would like to add this. We just did a comparison test of our service with 4INFO (44636, DOTGO (368266) and CooCoo (266266). We used the same search query for each of them:
"distance from china to japan"
We even gave DOTGO the benefit of the doubt and altered the query slightly to meet its parameters: "google distance from china to japan"
Here were the results:
4. Google SMS Search (ours)
Which one appears to have the most relevant, accurate results?
You get what you pay for ... always. I wouldn't say that a nominal fee is a "disadvantage" if the service is superior.

|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Jake J||5/30/13 8:14 AM|
Can you run the results with a legitimate query? Who is texting for the distance between China and Japan, there are a lot of variables in that query.
I was going to use your service, now I am questioning the validity of your company if your sample set is illegitimate for what people use an SMS query to search.
Also, what are your rates?
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||efactor||5/30/13 2:24 PM|
One of our users texted that query yesterday - that's why I used it.
Give it a try yourself. Do your own test then you tell me.

Yes, this terrible thing happened to me too. Google, you have no idea how helpful and serving this device is. PLEASE restore it. This is very un-Google like to do this. You are only causing a disservice to those of us who need/use it (particularly those of us who don't have smart phones). I am on the go a lot and need this device. We love you Google, but please restore this. Thank you!
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||cjottawa||6/3/13 3:55 PM|
I'm another long time regular user of the Google SMS search service.
In Canada, data plans are exorbitantly expensive; telecom costs here are worse than those of third world countries and much worse than those of other developed countries. Mobile data would add $30+++ per month to my expenses. No thanks.
Now I'm left looking for alternatives. (hint: public WiFi hotspots are few and far between here - there are no good alternatives)
Thanks Google. You just forced me into either living without a truly useful part of my life or spending an extra $30+ per month.
My current phone is an unlocked iPhone. I was considering getting an Android phone as my next device but will avoid that now since my only means of protest against this Google decision is to refuse to purchase a Google product.

Hi Efactor (Eric),
I attempted use of your service, instead of giving me results local to my location, the returned results were news items near that location involving my terms.
It was also very annoying to receive 12 results when I only needed 3. Using the entire 160 character limit is too much, follow twitters example and use 140.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||efactor||6/5/13 6:50 AM|
Thanks for the feedback. I know it does return a lot of results. That's because our service is basically returning the entire 1st page of Google Search. We're still working on improving it, but it's not perfect. Sometimes it does return more results than one would like. If you need news results, you enter 'news + topic'. For local business results, you'd enter 'business + zipcode'.

Hi Eric, I just clicked the link and tried Gnosis' "Google SMS

It's unbelievable that I was sent 9 texts (!!) just for querying an
address. Worse yet, it took 5 texts just to get to the address and
even then it's not clear that is the actual Hotel address. I am
confused why I received reviews. Am I supposed to use special context
to query only addresses (did not have to do this with google). I have
made this exact query with Google in the past and received something
similar to this in 1 text:
Le Parker Meridien
119 W 56th St New York, NY 10019
This is the information I am looking for. It is that simple. I cannot
use a service where I receive NINE TEXTS for querying one small piece
of information. As someone without unlimited texting, this is not a
valid alternative. I appreciate you trying to provide some sort of
equal service but it is still not quite the same for us who seriously
relied on this.

Waaaaaaaa! Mommy told me everything in my life would be perfect, free, and instant! Why can't these benevolent people who owe me nothing make me feel special NOW?!
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||efactor||6/5/13 7:11 AM|
You say "it is unbelievable" as if you understand the amount of coding involved to do something like this. We're just a small communications firm. We don't have Ph.D level programmers like Google does! :)
That said, we are working daily to improve our service. I'd like to be able to tell you that when you search for "le parker meridien ny ny" that machine language automatically understands that you mean "I want the address for" and then it can scan all the results and only return just what you're looking for. But our app is not there yet. We just launched a week or so ago, so there is definitely room for improvement.
Remember, for queries like these, our service basically returns everything on page 1 of Google.
We are still trying to figure out how to get it to return just the results you want and not others.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||coastalblue984||6/5/13 7:25 AM|
I'm using DOTGO (368266) - The string Google address le parker meridian ny ny" returns 1 text

Try that context?

You can still get the EXACT results google SMS would have returned for a specific query by using their still-up SMS search demo page here:
Your code would just have to post the query and parse out the response, if I thought they wouldn't take it down shortly, I'd write the code myself. It has been up for quite a long time though, so maybe...
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||efactor||6/5/13 7:32 AM|
And that is working for addresses and zipcodes not in Canada?
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||efactor||6/5/13 7:35 AM|
Yes DOTGO is very good for local business results. But it isn't so good just for general, informational queries. For example, if you try "google which tweetchats are on fridays" you'll see DOTGO is a little clunky and unsure.
What we are trying to do is be the one stop number for ALL queries. We're trying to bring the entire web to SMS for you. So, our developers are trying to code our service to understand not just local phone/address results, but informational queries, define queries, directions, movies, news ... all in one place. This is our goal.
THis is great feedback for us! We're taking all your comments to heart and trying to improve our service based on those comments.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||efactor||6/5/13 7:39 AM|
I think Google SMS is still working in Canada, but it isn't working in the US anymore.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||coastalblue984||6/5/13 7:41 AM|
I will say, for your info, my usage of Google SMS was almost exclusively for addresses/phone numbers. Weather, sports scores, movie times I can see as being potentially useful, but I would never read the news or generally "surf the web" via SMS. I didn't use it for directions, I have a GPS, but often my GPS does't have the point of interest in it's database, so I would get the address from Google SMS and put it into the GPS for directions.
I do appreciate that developers like your company, DOTGO, and others are trying to step up to the plate for those of us that Google abandoned. Keep at it!
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Jake J||6/5/13 7:44 AM|

Thanks so much, Coastblue I appreciate your input, definitely :)
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||coastalblue984||6/5/13 7:46 AM|
Oh, just a thought for your complaint above about getting 9 texts, perhaps you should add "Reply M for more" to the end of those, so he could choose to receive more results if what is in the first text doesn't answer the query... Google SMS used to do this after like the first 3 texts.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||efactor||6/5/13 7:57 AM|
That is a fantastic idea. DOTGO uses that too. That's definitely one possibility we're looking into.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||moparisthebest||6/5/13 7:58 AM|
Try his exact query for the place in ny, ny, it works fine. Also I asked that in one of the first posts on this thread, and google's SMS search is disabled everywhere, including canada, they just must have forgotten to take down that page. I guess anyones guess is as good as mine as to when if ever they will take it down, but until then you might as well use it. :)

Not at the moment.

Try it now. We've made some improvements based on your requests. The Local Business results are much cleaner now.

Hello all "ex-users" of the google SMS!
I would like to bring to attention another service that I found and is giving quite good results. I don't have any affiliation with this company, I just started using it and found it's quite useful. Also, it's free.
It's called TxtWeb (www.txtweb.com). The US/Can number is: 650-385-8882.
This service has many "apps" denoted with @.
For example, to find business address & phone number around a particular location, you would use the app @findnearme. See more info at http://www.txtweb.com/apps/findnearme
Example: @findnearme starbucks:new york
There are many apps available, some more useful than others...
I like also @weather.
Hope this helps.

To Gnosis Media Group:
Appreciate other services attempting to fill in with substitute SMS search. With Gnosis Media Group's SMS search, at the link, there is no information how it works. It is just a sign-up page, requiring you to first provide your email & mobile # to use the SMS service? And you can use it only 15 times, then a fee is charged? The other SMS search services do not require sign-up.
For better customer service, perhaps the people at Gnosis might consider providing an informational page or a blog about how your service works and what the fees are. People can give you direct feedback there.. Right now, you are promoting through this Google group discussion.

What a canned response. It sounds arrogant. Why launch hangouts (which I despise) and take away SMS? GRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Tony Lester||6/11/13 7:14 PM|
I am one of the disappointed ones too. I don't use hangouts. Google plus sucks, I use to use sms search almost daily ans now this..... Thanks Google. Thanks a lot.

This has worked well for me on address/phone number searches, though it will sometimes cast a wide net and return several hits. Thanks, Jon.

Agreed, pretty big bummer that Google decided to pull the plug on SMS search, I was a huge fan.
Trying to get this txtweb service down, it took me a few tries but now I'm getting good results, thanks!

Sadly, DOTGO has now stopped working too, but 44636 seems still functional, and if it goes, maybe I will sign up for SM.IRCH (so Bondian), especially since the 10 free inquiries per month would probably meet my needs, except when traveling.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Sandra Stumpf||6/22/13 5:56 AM|
I miss it terribly! I got information all the time. I can't find anything else that works. I do not have a smart phone so I am stuck.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Sandra Stumpf||6/22/13 5:57 AM|
Yes Yes Yes!!! I don't have a smart phone - I have an old phone but it works and google sms was GREAT.

|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||mschribr||6/23/13 9:21 AM|
I started using TxtWeb. I like it. I wonder if Google realizes that for every person who posts here there are thousands of people who feel the same but did not bother to post. That means there are 100,000 irate Google users.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||Erin Schlake||6/28/13 12:11 PM|
Google shutting down sms search was a big mistake. I will now be using bing.com for searches over your search engine. I imagine there are thousands of irate users just like me that have already switched.

Efactor, PLEASE stop individually replying telling people to use your SMS service. Its not a very good service, and your replies are repetitive and annoying while we wait for somebody with a real replacement for google's sms.

By beautiful technology, you mean niche products like Chrome Pixel? i guess the chromebooks are not same department as sms was.
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||loublou||8/30/13 12:40 PM|
yea! the sms was originally a niche thing, but its niche was quite big. More ppl used SMS ｔｈａｎ Ｃｈｒｏｍｅ Ｐｉｘｅｌ， ｒｉｇｈｔ？
|Re: Google SMS not working anymore?||kit.blanke||9/15/13 9:20 AM|
If you removed the service, you should at least take down the web pages showing how to do it. I've spent half an hour looking for the option.
Also, I did like and use the feature. When my phone is out of commission, it's nice to have this backup. I was hoping they'd eventually integrate it into Android OS somehow.

The google sms search 466453 service ended on May 9 2013. When did the google sms search 466453 start?

Is there a price that people will pay so Google could make a profit because a large number of people pay for the service?

Would you consider making a twitter Google? People could tweet a query and receive a response via twitter which they could get via SMS

In 20 years from now, we look back and see 2013 as the start of Google's decline. This is the year when profit is their primary goal and they stop taking risks. They are just another company trying to make a buck.

I had the voice search working last week on the old apple version. I updated to the new version 7.0.02 and no voice search. all I get is "listening", then I get "did'nt get that". what's up, I use this feature all the time and really frustrated about not being able to use it. please fix soon as possible.
