iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 4/30/13 10:52 AM
I have gmail setup using activesync (microsoft exchange). My emails were always instantly pushed to my phone but I noticed 2 weeks ago that my emails were coming in delayed.

I did a few tests like email myself from my desktop computer and waiting to see if it hit my phone. It didnt until 15minutes passed or until i did a manual refresh.

My wifes phone is still working fine. She has an iPhone 5 as well. We have not changed our phones since November 2012.  I tried deleting my mail account in the iOS mail settings and re-adding the account. That did not help.

How can I fix my setup?
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gwtp 5/1/13 1:47 AM
I have exactly the same problem with my iPhone 5: Gmail no longer seems to be pushed and I can only get emails if I manually refresh the iOS Mail app.

I've hunted around the Apple support forums and the Google support forums, but nothing so far seems to have worked to fix this.

+1,  Legacy gmail apps account on iPhone 5 since release.  Push used to work fine then recently seems to have stopped.  As far as I know nothing changed on my end.

Hi Guys!

Bad news! Push was discontinued. http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/03/25/googles-push-gmail-changes-surprise-new-iphone-buyers-apple-store-reps
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gwtp 5/1/13 6:49 AM
My understanding is that Exchange would be grandfathered and would still be allowed on existing connections on the same device, as the AI article confirms.

I've been using Gmail Exchange on my iPhone 5 since before Jan 2013, so given the above, it should still work...?

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 5/1/13 7:24 AM
That would depend because as soon as your device is updated it's no longer the same system so it will probably not work again. Recognised as a new phone. Would that make sense.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gwtp 5/1/13 7:52 AM
That does make sense, particularly considering that Gmail push still works perfectly on my iOS 5 iPad 1.

However, I updated to iOS 6.1.3 when it came out in March, yet Gmail push only stopped only working on my iPhone last weekend.  Presumably if the iOS update was the cause, there would be more than just a handful of people here with a problem?

In any event, it would be really useful if someone from Google could confirm whether an iOS update counts as a 'new device'?

I'm really keen to resolve this as possible, as I'm not really that enthusiastic about the alternatives of the Gmail iOS app or non-push IMAP.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 5/1/13 8:06 AM
Probably the servers taking time to catch up but I'll try getting something from a Google Employee.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/1/13 8:48 AM
Both myself and my wife are on iOS 6.1.3. I had her update via the software update feature from the phone, not through iTunes. I updated the same way in March. Mine did not stop working when I updated. My wife updated to 6.1.3 this past Monday, and her gmail push/exchange is working as designed.

So updating does not identify it as a new device. Is there anyway to contact GMAIL official helpdesk?
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 5/2/13 10:00 AM
A Google Employee will be looking into your problem as soon as possible but her flight has been delayed so this won't happen until tomorrow at the earliest.

Sorry.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/3/13 12:06 AM
Never mind... 6.1.4 did not fix my issue. I must have sent myself a test email at the same time it was scheduled to check.

Still broken!

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gwtp 5/3/13 12:34 AM
Push started working for me again yesterday around the time of the 6.1.4 update (shortly before I updated I think), but 12 hours later it stopped again.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Steven Schwachter 5/3/13 7:57 AM
I have the same problem. Google apps user. Wife works, mine doesn't and it has been going on for a week now.  Any details?
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jim Sharpe 5/3/13 8:52 AM
As a test I installed the gmail app and it's receiving push notifications just fine, while the native ios email app is still not.  It's almost like the "grandfathered" support for existing apps devices went away like it did for new devices.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Andre B. 5/4/13 10:09 AM
I'm having the same issue on my Verizon iPhone 4S and my iPad mini. It started about 2 weeks ago. Both now take about 15-20 minutes to notify me of a new email from gmail.

My 4S has been set up via Exchange for 18 months and now it just stopped working. As a (hopefully) temporary fix, I've forwarded my gmail to my iCloud account because I need push. But I hope there is a fix coming.

I don't really like the gmail app so I hope I can get my gmail to start pushing through the stock mail app again soon.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 5/4/13 2:29 PM
Please read my first reply. Unless you are using a paid business account it's not going to happen.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Andre B. 5/4/13 3:04 PM
But why did this happen? Existing users were supposed to be grandfathered in to exchange, right? I've made no changes to either my iPhone or iPad, including software updates. Both have remained on iOS 6.1.2 and I haven't updated them.

Nothing changed, so it still should be working from my understanding.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/4/13 3:43 PM
The C Man,

Are you dense? Why does my wife's identical phone get push gmail through exchange?

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 5/4/13 3:59 PM
As I said before a Google Employee will be investigating but a break in service can can cause services to be lost.

As I would not use something that is i##### anything I cannot investigate, only suggest reasons.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 José Sutre 5/5/13 3:32 AM
Tell me one thing please.

Did you tried google now for ios?
I'am having the same problem with push, i noticed the only change i made was installing google now.
After that push stop working on my iphone and ipad. I do not upgraded, updates, nothing....

I deleted google now for ios, but still no push on my gmail on ios Mail app.
Push worked for a period of time like you described, but after that, nothing...

Thanks

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jim Sharpe 5/5/13 6:06 AM
Good catch.  Now that you mention it I did enable Google Now about the time I noticed push to the native mail app stop working.  You might be on to something.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jim Sharpe 5/5/13 6:33 AM
Unfortunately just deleting the Google Search app from the phone didn't resolve the issue.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gwtp 5/5/13 6:34 AM
I also enabled it around the time that push stopped working - I've deleted it since (which didn't improve things).
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 5/5/13 7:50 AM
This is the kind of thing that classifies as an update to the system and breaks anything that is not current. Unfortunately there is rarely a way back.

Jasheeky,

Did you in stall Google Now and your wife (women are so much cleverer) not? My wife insists I try every update and new app on my Blackberry before she will do hers since she blames me for losing her page in an Ebook.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/5/13 8:08 AM
I did not install Google Now. I do have google maps and google search installed. Every time i open google search app it advertises about google now.

Strange.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Shaik Mathar Matheen Farook 5/6/13 1:15 AM
I have strange problem - I have Enterprise Gmail Account configured on My IPhone 5.

It worked perfectly before i upgraded to IOS 6.1.4 - After Upgrade Push / Fetch Email is not working.

I have to manually check the EMail.

Any one Facting this problem.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 5/6/13 2:11 AM
Shaik,

Pretty close to everybody who upgraded. It broke the system as it is now recognised as a new device.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gwtp 5/6/13 2:49 AM
Is this the official position from Google? It seems to me to be a rather mean-spirited interpretation of their grandfathering statement - I don't think the man on the street would necessarily regard a software update as a new device.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Shaik Mathar Matheen Farook 5/6/13 3:16 AM
Hi C Man,

I am using Google Enterprise - so PUSH Support is available for Google Enterprise Email.

Even I Thought and comented by many users as after upgrading it is consider as New Device - From the Google Enterprise Admin page - I removed my IPhone 5 and send new request to add the IPhone 5 again.

still same No Push or Fetch is working.

Google stops Exchange Support for Free GMAIL Account.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 5/6/13 3:45 AM
Shaik and gwtp,

Re-adding it as a a 5 won't alter the fact that that it had lost the grandfathering. It's now classified as a new 5.

The important sentence in the article I quoted is "That means most users will only discover the changes if they get a new iPhone, whether through upgrading, or simply receiving a replacement from Apple".

Nothing is forever.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/6/13 5:51 AM
That quote is related to hardware changes, not software.

I upgraded my wife's phone to the latest iOS 6.1.4 in front if my eyes... Her mail works perfectly fine.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 5/6/13 6:13 AM
I still happen to think it would be classified as an upgrade. Is your wife's account using Push?
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 BrittanyBee 5/6/13 1:52 PM
Thanks to The C Man for alerting me of this issue. I'm investigating this with my team and have a few more questions.
  • What was approximate date that sync stopped working ?
  • Can you provide your device name, iOS version?
  • Did you recently upgrade to a new version, start using 2 step verification or something else?
  • Please make sure that the account your are reporting this error on is the account you are using to post in Google Groups.
Thanks for your help and patience while we investigate!

Brittany

Hi, Brittany!

I don't mean to completely hijack Jasheeky's thread, but I'm experiencing the exact same issue (which I've posted about here: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/gmail/ZEn8ILNLW2w/HVGGhXCC00kJ), so I figured I'd toss my name in your hat to take a look at too:

- Push emails stopped working on April 25
- I'm using an iPhone 5, with 6.1.4 (was 6.1.3 when it stopped working.) (edit: If you needed the name I actually have on the device, it's `coolrunnings`)
- Push emails stopped immediately (or very soon after) enabling 2 step verification. (The the other components through the exchange setup work: Contacts, Calendar.)
- The account I'm posting with is the one I'm having issues with. It's the only one that I've ever had set up through the Sync/Exchange option.

Thanks a bunch!

Another edit: I too am using Google Now (just started a bit ago, though... Push was already broken before.)

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jim Sharpe 5/6/13 2:34 PM
Hi BrittanyBee,

Thanks for looking into this issue.  Here are some answers to your questions.  Please let us know if there are any other things we can provide to help you get to the bottom of this issue.

-Shortly before May 1

-iPhone 5, 6.1.4 (updated over the air when it was first made available)

-I'm not using 2 factor but did update the Google search app and turn on Google now in the general time period when push stopped working.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gwtp 5/6/13 2:36 PM
Hi Brittany,

For me:

- Sync stopped working around 26-27 April. It briefly worked for around 12 hours between 3-4 May after I upgraded to iOS 6.1.4;
- iPhone 5 (Ian's iPhone), iOS 6.1.4;
- I upgraded iOS to version 6.1.3 when it was released in March. The only thing that changed on 26-27 April is that I started syncing my iOS notifications with my Pebble watch.

Thanks!
Ian

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/6/13 2:53 PM

- Push emails stopped working sometime last month
- Jawad's iPhone 5, iPhone 5, 6.1.4 (updated over the air)
- Not sure if I enabled 2 step verification temporarily..I can't recall.
- The account I'm posting with is the one I'm having issues with.

Thanks Brittany.

Hi, Brittany!

Here are my info :

- Push stopped working on April 29 approximately
- I'm using an iPhone 5, with iOS 6.1.2
- I believe push emails stopped when I upgraded Google Search app to the version featuring Google Now
- I am posting with the account I am having issues with.

Thanks!

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 José Sutre 5/7/13 2:04 AM
Hello BrittanyBee, thanks for the help.

In my case:

- iPhone 4S and iPad 3 (the new iPad) stop receiving push after i install Google Now on my iPhone (i install google now on the day it came out, i think april 29)
- the push's stop on the two devices simultaneously , and none of the devices had been updated, restored, nothing since the released of ios 6.1.3 (on march 19 more or less).
- i use two factor authentication for a long time
- the push's stop for my google account i'm using to write this message

Thanks again for your time.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 RGPA 5/7/13 10:48 AM
Hi BrittanyBee,

Thank you for looking into this.

- My push email stopped on approximately April 26 or 27 on this account but works on another Gmail account.
- I am using an iPhone 5 purchased (and Exchange set up) in Nov 2012.  I am still running iOS 6.0.1.
- I made NO changes to settings on the phone or my Gmail account.

It would be great if this could be fixed as my productivity has noticeably decreased.

Thank you,
rg

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/7/13 10:50 AM
Brittany,

IT IS WORKING! Not sure if it is was you but thank you very much! My push emails are coming through like a champ now.

P.S. I hope this isn't temporary!
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Andre B. 5/7/13 3:05 PM
Brittney,

Thanks for looking into this issue! Here is my info:

Push via exchange stopped working for me around April 26-27.
My iPhone is an iPhone 4S and I also have an iPad Mini. Both were on iOS 6.1.2 when push stopped working. I've since updated the iPhone to iOS 6.1.3.
No 2 step verification, but push stopped working right around the time I started using Google Now.
This is the account with the issue.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/7/13 3:23 PM
BROKEN!

That only lasted a few hours. Emails aren't getting pushed anymore. I just tested 5 emails 15 minutes apart using wife's phone.

Why the temp fix??

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Lawrence A. Ciccarelli III 5/8/13 6:11 PM
I to am experiencing this same issue.  push seemed to stop working only recently.

I'm using an iPhone 5 that had Google sync set up prior to the 1/31/13 cut off.

-I think mine stopped working around the time I updated to 6.1.4 (which i believe was last week)
-AT&T iPhone 5 running 6.1.4
-Only other google related change i made to iPhone that I can think of is installing the google drive app
-This is the account that i'm having the problem with

When I access the google sync settings page from my iPhone I see the device updating with the most recent time I'm accessing my email, but the email only updates manually.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Sbbombers 5/10/13 6:38 AM
Brittany,

I am using Iphone 4s 6.1.3

Lost my "push" a few weeks ago.  My colleague at the office has the same phone.  His did not.  This seems a bit random.  I have not installed anything new.

Is there a fix for this yet?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/13/13 1:40 PM
BrittanyBee,

Any updates yet? It is still not fixed. Do you have a better contact??
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 larrymcjunkin 5/14/13 4:20 AM
Please count me as yet another this has happened to.  iPhone 5 and never made any changes to my phone, other than to update it to iOS 6.1.4 and PUSH just stopped working.

Google could get a lot of people to move to their native Gmail app if they would make the font size larger...you need a magnifying glass to read email.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 dougzilla 5/14/13 9:56 PM
I agree, the Gmail iPhone app font is too small, plus strokes are thin and shading is light (preview area) making it difficult to read.  There are extraneous borders and spacing in the message viewing area such that the limited real estate is not used efficiently.  The native iPhone mail app compares favorably in those regards.

For the moment it is bothersome enough to use a workaround.  I'm using the Gmail app for notifications and using the iPhone mail app for reading and composing.  Not great, but I don't want to give up 2-step verification -- I lost "Push" grandfathering when switching to 2-step verification last month.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Akrillic 5/15/13 1:41 PM
Hi BrittanyBee,

My device has also stopped receiving mail via push. I have had the exchange account set up for over 10 months.

My device name is Scott McFarlane's Ipad
My software version is 6.1.3(10B329) ... It's stopped working on 6.1.3

Very much appreciate you taking the time to look into this.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 halocore 5/15/13 4:37 PM
My exchange push on my iPhone has also stopped working. I have used and relied on the exchange push of gmail for years.

If this cannot be fixed, can someone at Google please give an honest explanation of why Sync was discontinued? No offense, but the Gmail app for iOS is absolute complete shit. I have a PAID apps account for my business that I will be cancelling if you guys can't get your act together on this.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 RGPA 5/16/13 12:23 PM

Any progress on this?

Thank you.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jim Sharpe 5/17/13 4:30 PM
It might be my imagination, but around 10 CDT today got a wild flurry of email notifications on my phone (from only a handful of new email messages). And ever since it appears that push to the native email client has been working again.  :)  I hope this isn't one of those temporary things like others have observed.  Is anyone else seeing an improvement?
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/17/13 4:45 PM
Jim mine has been working as well. 2 days and counting!
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Sbbombers 5/17/13 4:57 PM
Mine is now working too!!  Rock on brother!

Thank you to whomever did it for us!

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 larrymcjunkin 5/18/13 5:46 AM
Mine still is not working :-(  I even tried upgrading to Google Apps Business and that didn't fix it.  But now I am at least able to know talk to a human at Google about this, and he said it's a known issue that is affecting "some" users.  He also said to install the native iOS Gmail app as a workaround <lol>.  My response was the same known reasons no one likes the iOS Gmail app.  Hopefully, it will begin working again soon.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 larrymcjunkin 5/18/13 8:03 AM
A second update from Google Enterprise Support:

"The issue is only affecting a small subset of users and we are working in conjunction with Apple to resolve it."
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Sbbombers 5/18/13 7:41 PM
Mine stopped working today.  Only had it back for one day.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jim Sharpe 5/19/13 5:27 AM
Mine has also stopped again.  :(  That was short lived fix.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 larrymcjunkin 5/19/13 5:50 AM
If this isn't fixed soon, I've just found a great free alternative for Google Apps.  I never thought I'd say the word "Microsoft" again...but I just configured a free Outlook com account with another private domain I own just to test it.  Took about ten minutes to setup and I now have Mail, Calendar & Contacts (all PUSH) to my iPhone and iPad...everything works perfectly via ActiveSync.  Plus, it includes a 7GB SkyDrive account that syncs with my Mac desktop, the same way that Google Drive works.  Again...I haven't used anything from Microsoft in years, but I'm very impressed!
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Sbbombers 5/19/13 7:38 AM
If you set up an Outlook account to pull in your Gmails then you will either have an extra copy in your Gmail account unless you delete it once forwarded to Outlook, right?

Also, your new emails will reside in Outlook and the old email in Gmail so searching will be a pain, right?

Or is there a way to still keep everything inside Gmail?

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 larrymcjunkin 5/19/13 8:04 AM
You can set it up that way if you want...or more optimally, you can get rid of Gmail and point your domain MX, CNAME, and TXT records to a new Outlook.com account.  I setup my test Outlook.com account in this manner to use for awhile to make absolutely sure I want to make the switch.  I'm already 95% sure just after a few hours!  The interface blows away Google Apps (can't believe I'm saying this after using it since its inception) and it's fast, works flawlessly with PUSH for email, contacts, and calendar on iOS devices.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Pucki 5/20/13 11:34 AM
What was approximate date that sync stopped working?
End of April, I guess between 23 and 25 of April.

Can you provide your device name, iOS version?
iPhone 5, 6.1.4
iPad 3, iOS 6.1.3

Did you recently upgrade to a new version, start using 2 step verification or something else?
I upgraded both devices from an older iOS-version to the newest. I don't using 2 step verification or something else.

The account I'm using is the one I'm posting with.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 BrittanyBee 5/21/13 9:10 AM
Hi there - it looks like some of you are able to get notifications back working. I would go through the attached troubleshooting article. This should get your accounts back to a state where they are pushing notifications.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/21/13 9:23 AM
The troubleshooting link you posted is for the Gmail App for iOS... not the stock mail app for iOS.

Anyways, mine has been working as of late. Hope it's for good.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Sbbombers 5/21/13 9:24 AM
BrittanyBee,

This is not about the Gmail App.  This thread is about the Push notifications not coming through the native Mail app on iOS settign up Gmail as Exchange Mail.

Please help.  We have all lost push email notifications for the iPhone since late April.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 RGPA 5/21/13 9:29 AM
Mine worked for about 2 hours on Friday then stopped again.  Please advise.  Thank you.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jim Sharpe 5/21/13 9:31 AM
Hi BrittanyBee,

Thanks for the suggestion.  However, the instructions you referenced were for the iOS Gmail app.  The problem that I am having, and the point of this entire thread, is that push has stopped working for the native iOS app, not the Gmail app.

As I understand it my phone should have been grandfathered in as it's the same device I've been using since before push was removed for free Google apps accounts.  Additionally others here have had the problem with push going away even on paid accounts.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 BrittanyBee 5/21/13 11:02 AM
Hi guys,

Sorry about that. Try going to google.com/sync on your device and look at the last synced update. Has that number stopped as well? I would also try unlocking the captcha on that device and trying to resync. Don't remove the account, but just pull to refresh.

Brittany
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Sbbombers 5/21/13 11:29 AM
The google.com/sync did not seem to do anything.  However, the captcha thingie actually worked.  I can't believe it.  Thank you so much!

Eric

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Andre B. 5/21/13 11:57 AM
Looks like the captcha thing worked for me too. Mails are now popping up with 5 seconds of being sent! Hopefully this was the problem!

Thank you Brittany!!!

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jim Sharpe 5/21/13 12:13 PM
Appears to have done the trick for me as well.  I'll keep my fingers crossed that it stays working.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 dougzilla 5/22/13 3:55 PM
The captcha trick worked for me too!  Push started working maybe 10-20 minutes after following the steps.  It has been working for over 24 hours now.

I lost push after switching to 2-step verification in April.  Now it appears I have it back!  Very nice.  I am on iPhone 5 using iOS 6.1.3.

Thanks Brittany!!

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Mitch Brown 5/22/13 5:34 PM
Brittany,

I am unable to unlock my captcha, as my GApps account name was renamed from its original. The unlock isn't working for either one. I had opened a ticket with Enterprise Support but they closed it and said that it was part of the iOS not pushing problem.

Mine still doesn't push, by the way. And eSupport just keeps saying "we are working on it, no ETA". Very disappointed. Have switched over to Office 365 for the time being, and must say - quite happy. How can Google completely sidestep this issue for over 3wks? To say "it only effects a number of users" is an excuse to put it on the back burner.

Tell me exactly how many companies can work without Push notifications to their phones? Zero. And the Gmail app is a lousy alternative.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Bradley Gee 5/23/13 8:57 AM
I am not quite understanding how to unlock the captcha?  I click the link and say "Continue" but nothing seems to happen after that.  Where do I sign into my account at?  My phone?  My computer?
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Sbbombers 5/23/13 9:41 AM
You log into Gmail on the device that is not pushing (I assume iPhone) using Safari.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Andre B. 5/23/13 9:53 AM
What I did was go into settings on my iPhone, delete the gmail exchange account, do the captcha unlock thing on the computer, and then resetup the the exchange account on my phone. Worked perfectly for me.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 dougzilla 5/23/13 12:00 PM
I took the following steps --

On laptop (or iPhone?), go to the captcha page while logged into gmail account, then press Continue.

On iPhone, go to the native Mail application, open Inbox, pull down to refresh.  This didn't immediately seem to fix the problem, so I also tried the following --

On iPhone, go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendar -> Google (gmail exchange account).  Turn off Mail but do not delete the account.  Switch to the Mail app to refresh, notice all mail is gone from Inbox.  Switch to Settings and turn on Mail, then switch back to the Mail app to refresh, notice Inbox is populated again.

This also didn't seem to fix it immediately, but after 10-20 minutes Push started working again.  Not sure which of these steps did the trick.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gwtp 5/24/13 3:53 AM
Push was working ok for me for the last three or four days, but this morning it's stopped again. I've tried unlocking the Captcha, but it's not helped.

It's now around a month that Gmail exchange push has been really unreliable. If outlook.com had IMAP for syncing with OSX Mac Mail, I don't think I would hesitate to migrate to it, even though that would be a massive pain. But since push won't be available when I next upgrade my iPhone or iPad, other than with the Gmail app, I guess that I'm going to have to find an alternative at some point anyway. Between this and the fact that Google Reader is being retired, I'm not really feeling much love for Google these days.

Same problem here, push stopped working again this morning on both devices :-(

Same for me too. Was working for a few days, now it's stopped again sometime last evening.

I am not working either anymore.  Bummer
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 David Thorp 5/24/13 5:28 AM
Having a similar problem here. Push and fetch has just stopped working on my iPhone 5 although oddly it remains working fine on my iPhone 4S and my iPad 2. All devices running latest iOS that is applicable for that device. Stopped working some time last night

I'm subscribed to google apps for business on the domain dave-thorp.me.uk

Stopped working for me as well.  Was working for a couple of days prior to last night.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 David Thorp 5/24/13 9:47 AM
Bit more information on my issue. The issue seems to only be affecting my iPhone 5 and not any other device. Also if I set up my old free gmail account on my iPhone 5 which has sync grandfathered from before it was removed from free accounts then that will also work. It is only sync on my paid google apps account on my iPhone 5 that is having a problem

Hi guys,

I have reported this issue again so please stay patient and hopefully it will be sorted.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 BrittanyBee 5/24/13 10:25 AM
Hi there,

Have you guys tried unlocking the Captcha again? Go to this link on your phone: accounts.google.com/displayunlockcaptcha, follow the steps on the screen and then try refreshing your account.

I'm going to investigate why you are being prompted for this.

Dang!  That didn't last. Fooled me too..

Hoping for fix.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 preludeoflight 5/24/13 10:54 AM
BrittanyBee,

I still don't understand what you mean by 'refreshing' the account. You said before not to remove the account, but there is no 'refresh' option anywhere I've seen.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 BrittanyBee 5/24/13 10:58 AM
You can refresh by pulling down the inbox in Mail.app.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 David Thorp 5/24/13 11:03 AM
Tried resetting the captcha - didn't work

Also tried the following none of which worked either

Restoring my iPhone 5 as new
Setting up the account on a different iPhone 5
Setting up the account on an iPod touch
Removing and re adding the account from the mail app
Removing the iPhone 5 from my google apps devices list

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Barry Schwartz 5/24/13 11:30 AM
Yea, stopped this morning for the first time for me.

Google Apps account, exchange set up, latest iOS, iPhone 5, using Mail App.

Did captcha and pulled down to refresh and not working.

Something change in the past 24 hours?

Yeah Barry, it all started within the past 24 hours for me. I upgraded to the latest iOS on my iPhone 5 a few days ago, but the push issue with Exchange started yesterday (in my case).

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 BrittanyBee 5/24/13 5:24 PM
Hi guys,

I've been looking into this with my team. There is currently a known issue with Google Sync push notifications for Google Apps users. We are investigating this and working towards a resolution. We will update as soon as we have more information.

If you are a Gmail consumer user, jo to this link on your phone: accounts.google.com/displayunlockcaptcha, follow the steps on the screen and then try refreshing your account (by pulling down to refresh in the inbox).

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Sbbombers 5/24/13 5:44 PM
Brittany,

Thank you, but it is not just google apps users.   It is everyone on iOS using the native mail app with exchange setup.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Bradley Gee 5/24/13 5:51 PM
I've tried this multiple times along with the other suggestions posted in this group and none have worked.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 MOKM 5/24/13 7:16 PM
Brittany,  I would like to reiterate Eric's distinction between the Gmail App and Gmail in the Native iPhone App via Microsoft Exchange:

My issue is not with the Gmail App (a Google App) that I downloaded from iTunes. It is with the push-type Gmail that I access on the Native iPhone Mail App ( NOT a Google App), which I set up by selecting "Microsoft Exchange" rather than "Gmail" in the settings).

Yup. iPhone 5 not pushing as of today, but iPad working fine. Gmail on exchange through fortune 200 company corporate email system.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jasheeky 5/24/13 7:53 PM
Guys, when Brittany said Google Apps user, she means those who have paid $5/mo Google Apps service.

She then referenced 'consumer users' which is what most of us having problems are.

I updated my captcha, it did not work.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 dougzilla 5/24/13 8:05 PM
I lost Google Sync Push today as well.  I followed the captcha steps again -- this worked a couple days ago but it is not working now.  :-(

I am iPhone 5 with iOS 6.1.3.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Seth Staggs 5/24/13 9:05 PM
I also have lost Push for Google Sync and followed the captch instructions, but it didn't work.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gmansc 5/24/13 9:58 PM
Yep, dead for me, too.  Google apps user.  Tried the various recommendations with no luck.  No push email through sync since ~ 2:00 PST.  Not even the occasional fetch.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Liem 5/25/13 3:53 AM
I confirm gmail push is dead in Tokyo for 2 days now and quite difficult to refresh inbox on iPhone. But on iPad push still working... Quite annoying this strange bug.

I'd also like to add that we are a business user using Google Apps for Business, and this bug seems to affect all devices, iPad 2's, iPhone 5's and 4s's

What is the escalation procedure for any issue of this nature? All accounts have been set up under IOS using Exchange and push notification. However, calendar invites are not showing correctly and email doesn't seem to be to pushing nor is it fetching, it takes a manual refresh to get any mail on any IOS device.

FYI some of our users are in the UK
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Steve Schwachter 5/25/13 5:20 AM
It sure would be nice to get an answer on the level of seriousness this problem is. I have had this issue for over a month...completely unacceptable for an apps user.

Please advise us on the status of the problem and estimated time of completion.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 davidalan99 5/25/13 5:58 AM
Is there an update to this. Push works on my iPad but not on my iPhone.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Mark Dallimore 5/25/13 6:20 AM
@davidalan99 we've seem to have lost push on all IOS devices.

Being Memorial Weekend I doubt any progress on this until Tuesday, though isn't support 24x7x365.25 as stated on their website.

We have circa +110 people on Google Apps.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Kallen Law 5/25/13 8:33 AM
What I'm concerned and confused about is that last night, before I read up about all this, I deleted and reactivated my Gmail account on my iPhone 4 in an attempt to see if it would fix things (it didn't, obviously) so now, I'm wondering if I've irreparably revoked my phone's ability to get push for Gmail. It says everywhere that it's dependent on when you got your device but isn't that also dependent on when you activated your account on that device?
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Mark Dallimore 5/25/13 8:59 AM
So much confusion around this issue. We have Google Apps for Business which should include push. Plus you've mention iPhone 4.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 frosty34 5/25/13 10:14 AM
Add my iPhone 5 and my wife's iPhone 4 to the list of those with no push. Ours stopped working May 24th in the morning. Emails won't push and randomly "pop up" unless we refresh manually.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Monaghanmm 5/25/13 7:52 PM
My sync and push notifications stopped working on 5/23 out of nowhere - I tried the captcha recommendation above.  Now even when I refresh the inbox feature on my iPhone 4S, it can take 45-50 min for an email to get loaded but the same email will be in gmail on a browser log-in.  I'm seriously disappointed - gmail has been my favorite and preferred email for years but I rely on the push notifications for work.  Please help!
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Mina Azer 5/25/13 11:04 PM
I've started having this problem few days ago. I have my Gmail account setup via Exchange for years and didn't do any restores or deleted/added the account again. I've only found out about Google dropping ActiveSync support "after" I got the problem

I sometimes get email notifications instantly but most of the time I won't get them untill few minutes (if at all). Last I tried, it took 27 minutes! but since few hours ago, it seems that I don't get ANY notifications

What is going on here? At least Google should stick to their promise for not changing things for existing accounts although they must exclude that "software update/change would count as a new device" nonesense !

I find it really weird that Contacts and Calender still sync instantly. It is only email push notifications that doesn't work.

Shouldn't they all be affected if ActiveSync wasn't working in Exchange for me ?

I also tried setting an IMAP Gmail account and for my surprise it was pushing emails with 2-8 minutes delay which is not good enough but still better than NOTHING at all!

iPhone 4 iOS 6.1.2

Any help would be much appreciated

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Laurent08 5/25/13 11:31 PM
I have 3 accounts setup on my iPhone 5.
All have been setup as 'gmail exchange' for as long as its been available:

2 paid google apps accounts.
1 gmail consumer account.

No changes have been made yet, as of Friday 24 May, push notifications have stopped. This problem has not affected my colleagues on the google apps domains.

I have attempted the capcha unlock and this has still not resolved the problem. Seems to me this is an attempt to move all iOS gmail users to the gmail app.

This needs a fix urgently.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 CK B 5/26/13 2:51 AM
Same here. Since Friday (roughly 08.00 UTC) push doesn't work any more. Scheduled fetch neither. Manual refresh needs several attempts.

iPhone 5 with iOS 6.1.3 and gmail consumer account.

The same account works well on my iPad 3 and iPod Touch 4.

My iPad does not push, my iPhone does. No explanation. No response from google. Google apps user for 6 years
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 timos68 5/26/13 6:20 AM
Gmail Exchange has stopped working on my iPhone 5. Have deleted and re added the account, changed password. But nothing. Have to manually poll for emails. As for my iPad same deal: no push emails.  My devices are both 'grandfathered' for gmail exchange. Very unhappy. Was hoping to use Gmail Exchange for as long as possible. Hoping still push will come back on.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Mark Dallimore 5/26/13 7:11 AM
I just think its poor customer service. I use the native Apple mail app and Friday across my IOS devices push just stopped. As a corporate customer we have recently moved from MS Exchange to Google Apps for Business. This is not the best start.

Same issue here. I am a new customer of Google Apps and thats not the best start. Push notifications through native Apple mail app works fine on my iPad but not on my iPhone 5. I have to manually refresh mail.app on the iPhone to get emails.

Same problem here. Gmail push/sync suddenly stopped working on my existing iphone 5 (IOS 6.1.4) on 05/23. Takes several attempts to refresh manually. Frustrating.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gmansc 5/26/13 11:41 AM
iphone 5 has not received a push email since this started.  ipad, however, works fine.  I am on paid google apps through my employer.  Google sync is part of the service.  Now getting on to 48 hrs without a peep from google.

Also having the same problem. Push started working for a few hours Thursday last week and then stopped again by Friday.

Hey, I work in the technology field. I am understanding of the fact that sometimes stuff does happen. However what I find most disturbing about this whole ordeal is the lack of acknowledgement by google that there is a problem. The least they could do is state they know about the problem and are either working on a solution or not. Why leave thousands of people hanging without any information?

Going to m.google.com/sync/settings/iconfig (the only way to see the sync status on iPhone...) shows that the phone is  not syncing. It showed the last sync as the day before (which was when I removed and re-added the account trying to fix it.

Going to the page to allow applications to access my account, both on my phone and computer, did not help. After 8 hours it still is not working. My latest test email never showed after an entire hour - and I manually refreshed to get it finally.

This is infuriating!

That captcha trick didn't work for me or I am doing it wrong

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 RGPA 5/27/13 11:50 AM
It's interesting.  Many of use lost push near the end of April (like the 26th); now others seem to be losing it near the end of May--the 24th.  Is anything happening on these Friday's near the end of the month?
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Shane McKenzie 5/27/13 4:10 PM
This issue is still ongoing. I've tried the captcha and it did not resolve the lack of push on my iPhone 5 that has been set up with Exchange settings since shortly after I got the phone in October of last year.

What is the official status of this issue and what is the ETA for a fix?
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 MOKM 5/27/13 4:43 PM
Still no luck here. I also noticed my iPhone 5 and iPad not synching Gmail via Exchange ActiveSync on Friday 24 May (I am a legacy user of the free service). I guess it is still Memorial Day in the US, so Google staff are not in the office until tomorrow?

Yeah google EAS also stopped working for me around Friday Noon.  It would not Push the email to the apple mail app.  If I manually refresh, it would work.  Also, there is approximately 3 mins delay before I can retrieve the email from manual refresh.

Google Apps user, non-paid account. Iphone 4S, iOS 6.1.3

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 fkick 5/27/13 5:40 PM
Today Both my personal (gmail) and google apps (paid) accounts have stopped pushing to my iphone 5, though the device has been active since last September and is still running 6.1.2. Ipad is currently still working.  Wife's personal gmail also stopped pushing (though hers has been down since end of April).

Any fix for this eta?

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gmansc 5/27/13 6:04 PM
In my experience, google rarely provides ETAs or even status updates.  Pathetic.  If no one is working on it because of the long weekend, then google has no business representing itself as a company serving an international community.  If they are working on it, their silence is unprofessional.

My push stopped working on May 24th as well, after I updated my iOS. This is such a bummer. I switched my business accounts over to a me.com account after I bought my ipad mini in February and couldn't push. I am still getting random emails on my gmail account, and now missing out on opportunities (grrr) so I installed the gmail app and it pushes there. Still a pain to toggle back and forth between mail and the app. Gmail sucks!

How Google can claim International coverage when they are clearly handcuffed by a local holiday is questionable to say the least.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 fkick 5/28/13 10:49 AM
I just got off the phone with Google Apps support. Apparently they're having server issues with their active sync and are working on the problem now. As they update me, I'll keep this form up to date with the information I receive (they admit it is affecting both personal gmail addresses on EAS and google apps).

Add me to the list of people with the problem.

Would love to hear some kind of official acknowledgement from Google instead of deafening silence...

Add me to the list. iPhone 4S, 6.1.3. Stopped working on 5/25; last sync was 5/1/13. Unlocked captcha and nothing. Turned of and on mail. Deletc captcha again. Nothing. Deleted account, reinstalled. Nothing.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Jinyi Zhu 5/28/13 1:13 PM
I have a rather strange case. I have iPhone 4S and Sync stopped 05/23 as I recall ( I didn't realized at that time, thought it was some problem with my phone). And results from http://m.google.com/sync/settings/iconfig showed last sync at 2013-05-28 16:06. Still I cannot get gmail pushed, not even after deleting the account and re-adding it. So It really seems there is big server issue.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 timos68 5/28/13 5:09 PM
When I check on last sync time do my iPhone 5 not pushing  on http://m.google.com/sync/settings/iconfig it shows the most recent time I did a manual refresh on the exchange account. So the account is working but just not pushing my email.

Mine is working again. Thanks Ron for heads up.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Lisa Sands 5/28/13 8:26 PM
Mine now has completely stopped working, even with the Gmail app. I am getting an error message and an infinite "checking for mail" status. Yay!
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Mina Azer 5/28/13 8:26 PM
Started working for me again few minutes ago. Awesome!

I just hope Google would rethink about dropping ActiveSync completely for cinsumer accounts. At least grand older accounts that was linked via Exchange to keep their ActiveSync function with no restrictions like updating or upgrading. It is easier for all

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Monaghanmm 5/28/13 8:51 PM
I'm tentatively thinking my exchange sync is working... Fingers crossed.  Thank you! I also sincerely hope that there can be some way to work with my iPhone and gmail that doesn't include a separate app.  I know that's wishful thinking probably at this point - but that's my primary email and I'd hate to have to change things up just due to sync and app issues etc.  esp since I have a 4S and may eventually have to upgrade my phone :(

Plus here's to hoping my sync stays intact for a while :)

Mine still isn't working.  I've tried the captcha thing and refresh but still no luck.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 MOKM 5/28/13 10:02 PM
Seems to be working again now. Microsoft Exchange (ActiveSync) appears to be pushing Gmail to the "built-in" mail app on my iPhone 5 and iPad 3. (FYI, I am a legacy user of the previously free Google Sync and am not using the paid-for Google Apps for Business yet).
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 dougzilla 5/28/13 10:15 PM
Yup, it kicked in for my iPhone 5.  Hope it sticks.  Thanks Ron for the heads up and thanks Brittany for addressing the problem!

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 MOKM 5/29/13 1:50 AM
All is working okay now, but I can't be without push mail for 4 or 5 days again, for work reasons.

I am now thinking of using the Gmail App instead, as it kept pushing mail throughout this down period.

I am thinking of keeping the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync account on my iPhone with the Mail switched off (and the Calendars on) for a few months while I try out the Gmail App. I don't want both the Apple native mail app and the Gmail app checking for/downloading mail at the same time and using up battery power etc.

If I put ActiveSyn to sleep for awhile (not deleting the account, but just switching the mail setting to "off") , would I still have Gmail push if I tried to turn that mail setting back to "on" in a few months time? I have a vague memory of somebody saying that legacy users of the free Google Sync service have to use it or lose it. Is that true, or can I let it go dormant indefinitely? Does anybody know what the terms are for keeping the free service (other than not deleting the account from your phone or buying new hardware)?

Any info would be much appreciated

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Laurent08 5/29/13 3:10 AM
Working for me now too.

Would love to know the cause behind this fault, I'm wondering how several colleagues on my paid google app domains didn't have issues but I did

Looking forward to your update BrittanyBee. Push over Exchange is still not working for me; it's been down since Friday, May 24th. In the meantime I'm using the Mailbox App.

Aaand it's working again.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gmansc 5/29/13 9:28 AM
Seems to be working again.  Good news.

I know that this will go nowhere, but I feel that it's important to state that Google's communication of this has been well below professional standards.  Minimal updates, no recommendations on what to do while the system is failing and no estimated time for a fix.  Believe it or not Google, but people actually work during weekends and depend on the services for which they pay you.  Here are some recommendations:

1) When there  is a problem, be proactive in posting to alert your users.  I did not see anything on the dashboards indicating a problem.
2) While the problem exists, post to the relevant forum at least once a day that the issue persists but is still being worked on.
3) Suggest alternatives to carry those working through the outage period.
4) Alert users to when the fix is rolling out.

None of this would take more than a minute or two per day, but would save your users countless minutes in wondering and testing whether you've actually gotten a fix in the works.  It is how other companies work.  Google products are not hobbies, but instead are tools used to run businesses and education.  Please treat your customers with respect by posting updates, thereby recognizing that to do otherwise wastes your customers' time.

Hi guys!

Glad to see some of you have already experienced the fix! Your push notifications should be working again, but we are still monitoring this to make sure the issue has been totally resolved. Thanks for your patience during this issue.

Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 gmansc 5/29/13 9:52 AM
@MOKM   The gmail app is okay but not great.  1) It pushes notifications but not the email body to your phone.  As such, when you open the app, you wait until messages download.  2) The lock screen does not update when email messages are read elsewhere -- on your computer, for example.  Thus, you cannot tell by looking at your lock screen how many messages you still have unread.  3) It is not very tunable -- font size, sounds, etc are all set by google.  4) In my experience, it uses more battery power than the native iphone email app with google sync.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 BrittanyBee 5/29/13 10:08 AM
MOKM - if you turn off notifications on the Mail app and leave Google Sync syncing (maybe put it on the hourly schedule), you should be fine while you test the Gmail app

Update: most users should have sync back, but there might be some of you that don't have push notifications back up. I would suggest using the Gmail app for notifications as a workaround while we resolve this issue.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Mark Dallimore 5/29/13 10:24 AM
Push is back for me.

Can i add @BrittanyBee there is a lot of work to be done with Google iOS app. As a business user the signature handling is poor, difficult to adjust any settings, sounds etc, and if you are in a deadzone (low 4g or 3g) it takes an age to poll the email and bring it through to the iPhone or iPad.

It did however work during this down period.

This should be fixed for all users. You should all be receiving push notifications with via Google Sync at this time. Thank you for your patience and help in investigating this issue!

Good idea, Brittany Thank you! I did as you said and turned off notifications etc and also went into my iPhone Mail settings, where I set Fetch New Data to hourly, then switched from Push to Fetch in my Advanced settings.

>>The gmail app is okay but not great. 4) In my experience, it uses more battery power than the native iphone email app with google sync.<<

Yes, Gmansc: I realize the flaws you mention, but reliable push notifications are crucial for my job and that factor outweighs everything else. The Gmail app proved to be more reliable this time, and I have heard more complaints from friends and on these forums about push issues with ActiveSync than with the Gmail app. Perhaps it is early days on that score. I may use the Gmail app just for notifications and read my mail in the Apple App, which would be a bit of a hassle. I need to experiment. Either way, I will use Brittany's suggestion so that I don't lose my grandfathered rights to free GoogleSync until I buy a new device.

Hi Brittany

My device also stopped receiving mail via push.  I have had exchange set up for years.

My software is 6.1.3(10B329)

Thanks

I take it back. There seemed to be a delay of over two hours but it seems okay now.

Brittany, I tried a restore on my iPhone a few weeks ago trying to fix this issue.  Will these fixes "work" for me too, or did I lose the inclusion into the GMAIL sync/Push when I did the restore?  Would be nice if you can grandfather me back in.

Started working 2 days ago, then stopped last night, now it's intermittent.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Howard Luo 6/3/13 7:33 AM
I noticed the same problem. Interesting part is that I set up the same email account on my iPhone and iPad mini. Recently noticed that iPhone can get push while iPad mini not. iPhone is 20month old, ipad mini 6 month and updated IOS to 6.1.3.

Yeah, I'm experiencing the same problem.  PUSH notification for EAS was fine last week, now it is a bit intermittent.  Sometimes it PUSHes sometimes, it would only refresh when i check mail.

Not very reliable.

What are some things to try?  I am having a similar issue.  I have two email accounts that come through on my phone...the other one is fine.  Still getting messages saying to check my settings, but I have no idea what to do! Thanks!
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 chase.rief 6/6/13 4:24 PM
Same issue here.  Issues last week, read through this and got it fixed.  Stopped working again about two days ago.  I'm a paid google apps user so it should be working.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 Gareth Davis 6/8/13 1:59 PM
I have a similar issue. I have an iPhone 4 and some time ago, before the cut-off point given by Google, I had both my Gmail accounts set using the Exchange system and while emails pushing through wasn't absolutely instant, it was still pretty good as I prefer Apple's native mail app for various reasons.

Earlier this week I unlocked my phone so I could move from one network to another and this meant doing a complete reset of all my handset via iTunes then resetting everything up again.

Over the last couple of days I have noticed that access to my email accounts via Apple's mail app has been somewhat inconsistent. Sometimes it works fine, and emails arrive quickly, but at other times the app won't connect to my accounts. I will go to the app, refresh it, and the message at the bottom of the app simply holds at 'connecting' rather than moving through the mail-checking process.

I usually switch push off during the day when I am working, and have my emails through my laptop, and it was on Friday evening - when I went to set push back on again and refresh the mail app - that I found this problem. Since then, sometimes the app has connected to my accounts and received mail, other times it has held up as described above.

My iOS and apps are all up to date with the latest versions as of the time of writing.

I do hope that having to completely reset my phone from scratch after unlocking it does not mean that I will no longer be able to access my Gmail accounts using Exchange. While I don't mind the Gmail app I just prefer Apple's native mail app.

Attention everyone:

For those who lost the gmail push notifications on your iDevice, this is a brilliant workaround I found. It worked for me and was pretty simple to set up.

http://m.cnet.com/news/receive-push-gmail-alerts-on-ios-after-losing-activesync-support/57588936?ds=1

I hope gmail changes their mind someday or I'll stop using gmail altogether. Until them, I'll use this workaround.

Enjoy!

Other than the above "hack", has there been any updates on this issue?  I'm resolving myself to the fact that it's now impossible to get a gmail account to push to iOS mail without various bells and whistles.
Re: iOS Gmail Push suddenly stopped working on existing iPhone 5 MOKM 8/4/13 9:42 PM

Hi Brittany, I took your advice on May 30 here, about using the Gmail app and leaving the Google Sync synching to maintain my grandfathered rights to free Google Synch (actually I put it on the 15 minute fetch schedule, rather than the hourly one) while I tested the Gmail app. It is now two months later and I switched back to Push on Gmail via Microsoft Exchange. Push is working fine again on my iPad but not on my iPhone 5. Both were bought before Jan 20 2013.  What is causing this problem on my iphone5 but not my iPad? Is it because I did capta unlock on the iPhone 5 as one of the methods advised to fix the Exchange issue that occurred in late May? Is it because of an OS update? Please advise me how to fix this. I need push notification for my job.

Update:
Hi again. After a few hours, my iPhone 5 started to get push again. I didn't do anything, just waited and push kicked in. Hopefully, it will keep working. Fingers crossed. I still don't know why push started working immediately on my iPad but not my iPhone...
