| Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Garrett Hope | 13/02/14 06:47 | I installed Google Drive and uploaded the files without problems. The following day when I restarted my Macbook Pro the computer froze and beeped three times repeatedly. This happened as soon as Google Drive asked for permission to update. To get my computer to boot I had kill Google Drive's automatic startup. I just tried manually starting the program, gave it permission to download updates, and the same thing happened again. What's going on? As far as I can tell the three beeps is normally a signal in OSX that the RAM is seated poorly. Please help. Thanks! Browser:Chrome |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Ryan Peat | 13/02/14 10:51 | Mine is doing the same thing i have to hold down the power button and then i restart it. For right now i have just been not using google drive. Hopefully we can get an answer. Safari OSX 10.6.8 |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | rdelatorre | 13/02/14 17:40 | Mine started doing the same "three beeps" thing as of yesterday morning. It took us until now to narrow the issue down to the Google Drive menu bar application. I'm on Mac OSX 10.6.8. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | (inconnu) | 17/02/14 08:46 | I am wondering if it has something to do with the 10.6.8 operating system as I have been having the same issues and I have 10.6.8 |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Deanissimo | 19/02/14 05:05 | I have had the same problem with Google Drive app causing my MacBook Pro to freeze and Beep repeated during the final stages of booting up. This first happened on 11 Feb and it has taken a while to track down the problem. Initially, according to reports on Apple Support it appeared to be a RAM problem and I have tried replacing the RAM with new RAM with no effect. Eventually we realised it was something to do with the Login/Start up sequence and discovered that the problem stopped when we removed Google Drive app. The problem returned when we re-instated a new version of the Google Drive app. Re-booting the Mac about 3 times eventually results in a clean boot without any crashes or beeps, but that is not a practical or reliable solution so I have had to delete the Google Drive app. This means that I can no longer synch Google Docs to my hard drive and have to reply on accessing files via the internet. Grrrrrrr. I'm also on Mac OSX 10.6.8. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | tim kerslake | 20/02/14 04:46 | I too have a macbook pro, 13" 10.6.8 installed. I only launch the google drive app as needed. I don't use it all that often, but recently, it sometimes works, and sometimes it freezes my computer and BEEP BEEP BEEP which I researched as memory problems. I also had a kernel panic recently. My macbook has been running totally fine except this week where I've been launching and syncing with Google Drive. I hope this is just the google drive, not my laptop. Lucky to see others are having the same isolated issue. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | M-III | 20/02/14 06:29 | Same here, seems to be with OSX 10.6.8 and Google Drive v1.14 (older versions seem to work). Turning it off/disable is the quick fix to make the computer usable again, but not a solution. I have not yet seen the problem on any OSX 10.7+ machines.

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | M-III | 20/02/14 09:30 | A normal RAM issue would be 3 beeps at post/during boot, that is certainly when there is a RAM issue.
Not to say that the Google Drive V1.14 App isn't causing a RAM issue/corruption/fault etc on OSX 10.6.8 machines when they are up and running in the OS. Remove Google Drive from your start up/login items and the computer will work fine [you might have to boot in safe mode to do this- shift key at boot]; then manually start Google Drive - most likely it will lock up your computer, but sometimes not. Since it is not happening to everyone, I wonder if it's file size specific, or corruption on some replication servers, or truly a glitch with Google Drive v1.14 and OSX 10.6.8, or...? I wish I could focus on troubleshooting this, but I have a lot of other things to do too... Please help Google! or Apple? Help us GoogleMan - you're our only hope... |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | @TallTed | 20/02/14 13:11 | Replaced RAM. (yay, lifetime warranty!) Replaced Logic Board. (yay, AppleCare!) Error persisted, and having eliminated hardware, the Apple Genius dove deeper into the Console logs. Apparently, the three-beep klaxon alarm happens anytime the machine can't *write* to RAM, which can be due to software *as well as* hardware failure. There, taunting us, was evidence of the many, many kernel panics caused by Google Drive 1.14 on my MBP running OS X 10.6.8, with timing matched thoroughly to when I experienced the freeze-and-klaxons. Time to 'fess up and fix the problem, Google! |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | tim kerslake | 20/02/14 14:01 | Super, thanks for adding that to the thread. It's great to know I don't have to go to visit the geniuses. I was starting to panic (kernel style) when I got the three beeps of death. Lucky for me, I use google drive once in a while, so when I launched it and it immediately went BEEP BEEP BEEP, it only took a bit of research to get to the conclusion it has to be that. I read that kernel panics can be the result of packet writing errors, and I suspected my writing to my airport extreme and attached hard drive could be the culprit, but, aha! No. It's google drive. How odd... it only did this in the last two weeks. Has there been any other issue? Mine does it sporadically. In fact, I was thinking it's possible that it does not do it on a 'first time launch' and quit. But rather, launch, use it to sync, quit, then relaunch and beEp (which could also be my swearing at that point). Google? Hello? Does anyone use Mavricks with G-drive? Is it also problematic? |

If someone knows a way to contact Google developers, we should all email them and let them know that they need to write a patch for this issue ASAP. Everything seems to work if you unseat Google Drive from your hard drive, which is a pain in the @$$ but a small price to pay for those awful sounds to stop. It's such a specific issue (10.6.8 AND Google Drive seated to the hard drive AND updated in the past few days) that it might take them a while to fix if we don't get on them to do it. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Deanissimo | 01/03/14 04:42 | Good point - but how do we do it? Needless to say that I have been working with two google support techs/engineers for the past 5 days, and I am waiting for a conclusion. I have been sending them logs etc, and even spoke on the phone several times! I can duplicate it and they said they can too. The questions are if it is an Apple OS issue or Google issue. The App is causing the memory to crash the Finder/ or Finder to crash the memory, but only in some cases. My personal 10.6.8 has not shown the issue yet. While I have also done clean 10.6.8 installs on new MacBook pros and I can duplicate the problem as well, with different users/profiles too. Still working on it and waiting. I will post as I know anything. -- This e-mail transmission may contain confidential and legally privileged information that is intended only for the individual named in the e-mail address. After restarting my computer using the problem looked like it went away but it happened again multiple times, so started researching. multiple forums all pointed that the RAM might have been faulty so I ended up replacing the RAM and started working fine till this morning. During the start up soon as google drive icon appeared at the top showing a syncing symbol, it froze again with 3 beeps. google needs to fix its shit. |

| Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Bijan Shrestha | 04/03/14 03:37 | I have the exact same issue on 2011 macbook pro 10.6.8. and first time it happened I assumed it was the issues with the RAM Then i went ahead and bought a new RAM and exchanged it, which worked fine for a while but then it happened yesterday morning again during the startup when the google drive symbol appeared at the top/ syncing it froze and went off on 3 five second beeps. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | as220-IT | 06/03/14 12:38 | I discovered a potential source of the issue. This solution at least allowed the user to resume using Gdrive, but it isn't clear if it will crop up again. I found that someone had logged into a different Google account using Safari. Even when I was resetting all the google preference files in their user account (~/Library/Application Support/Google/ ~/Library/Preferences/com.google.* ~/Library/Caches/) as well as removing keychain entries, when a fresh install of Google Drive was opened it was trying to authenticate to a different google user. This wasn't happening in a different OS X user account. So I removed all the files/folders related to Safari in ~/Library (a Safari reset didn't do enough) and have since had no problems with using Google Drive. No errors, and no freezes. Will have to wait and see if this starts again but for now this helped. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Deanissimo | 08/03/14 10:20 | Sounds interesting but as I am not terribly techie I am always a bit loathe to start deleting library files. Has anybody else tried as220_IT's suggestion ? Did it work? |

I thought the RAM just wasn't seated causing the freeze and beeps but on the next restart it happened all over again even when I swapped RAM from my iMac. Reseated the RAM three more time It booted properly so I removed Google Drive thanks to your thread and all seems well. I have done 5 shutdowns and reboots with no further problems. Thank you |

Thanks so much for posting your feedback in the forum--it's immensely helpful as we investigate this issue! Here are a few workarounds to try: 1) Disable starting up the sync client at machine startup. There is a checkbox in the preferences dialog. 2) Upgrade to a more recent, less buggy OS version like Mountain Lion instead of Snow Leopard. 3) Disabling icon overlays (I'm not sure if this would help, but it's also a setting in the preferences dialog). If any of these steps help, we'd like to know! Thanks for your patience as we look into this. We're listening! #crashandbeep #thankyouusers Cheers, Abby |

Either Google Drive is supported on Snow Leopard, or it's not. Given that Mavericks is free, there's probably a reason that we're running Snow Leopard. > 3) Disabling icon overlays (I'm not sure if this would help, but it's also a setting in the preferences dialog). This would require the ability to run google drive without it crashing. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Deanissimo | 10/03/14 16:46 | Whilst it is great to get a post from Google, I support ALL of Warren's points on this. Especially the upgrade suggestion! I have already paid out for replacement/upgrade of my RAM only to find it was never the problem! I have had Leopard for ages and Google Drive has worked on it fine until a few weeks ago. I'd want some more concrete reasons before I changed my spots! |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | @TallTed | 10/03/14 20:05 | > Hi all! Abby here--I'm the community manager for Google Drive. Actual response is good. That said, this response is rather too little, rather too late,
The issue isn't seen only at machine startup. I have had it

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Al Bundy | 10/03/14 21:57 | I support the request for an update, as Warren also points out there is a reason why we use snow leopard. Today was my 4th visit to apple Genius with several weeks off my mac. They told me they had up to 7 users a day and ended finding what the issue was. (Some may point outthat I should have googled it again and found by myself but when it happened first, this wasn't documented... so bad luck for me) The new RAM they put in my laptop at some point isn't worth the hours of work I lost. Plz an update would be nice. For those like me who are supporting google drive with monthly $, the intention to fix the problem seems the least to ask for rather than asking me to buy a new MS office version to go with Maverick. | Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Clive Sweeting | 11/03/14 07:39 | Me also. GoogleDrive will reliably crash my 15" MacBook Pro 2011 running 10.6.8. 10.6.8 is much more reliable and "Mac like" than 10.7, 10.8 or 10.9 I would point out that other well know file sync services work perfectly happily on this Snow Leopard. At the least patch the software so it doesn't crash the Mac in such an alarming fashion. Like others I was expecting it to be a hardware fault. In 20+ years of using a Mac I've never encountered software that can cause one of the hardware failure tones to fire up... |

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Joshua Tait | 12/03/14 20:37 | I have a late 2011 mbp currently running OS X 10.6.8 with the Google Drive app running at startup. I haven't had any problems with the gdrive app before until I allowed the most recent update. My mbp would freeze (screen and mouse cursor still visible though), then it would play 3 long, rather loud beeps, pause, 3 beeps, pause, etc. indefinitely, requiring manual reboot. I had noticed it seemed to happen after the gdrive app would start to sync with the web but thought that was coincidence because many of the threads I found were saying 3 beeps indicates bad RAM, bad logic board and anywhere from $350 to $1800 to fix. I disabled gdrive from opening on startup and it hasn't reproduced the 3beeps-freeze issue yet. I'll post again if I have any new developments. |

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Charlie Nancarrow | 23/03/14 15:23 | You *may* find the solution is to Upgrade DropBox to the latest version. Whilst Google Drive is certainly the LAST menu extra to be loaded, many reports of this problem seem also to be from those that have DropBox installed as well. We had a machine in recently for repair, where we tried all the hardware swap outs, and later deemed it as a software problem when this 10.6.8 machine had its DropBox client upgraded from 2.4.x to 2.6.x the problem went away. It *may* still be a Google Drive bug, but the interaction with other software on the same machine cannot be ruled out. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | lynden | 24/03/14 03:51 | Does anyone know where we can download version 1.13 from? |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Deanissimo | 24/03/14 04:07 | I just tried Charlie's fix and it worked! E.g. First I backed up (of course), then I updated my Dropbox app to 2.6.20 and finally reinstalled the latest version of GoogleDrive app (1.14) onto my MacBook Pro. I then rebooted - which previously had triggered the 'crashandbeep' problem. So far...all is well!! My machine is running fine, and so are dropbox and google drive. Anyway, I'll post if the problem resumes, but currently Charlie's fix seems to have worked. (I should add that since first encountering the 'crashandbeep' problem I have upgraded to Mavericks, so I am not sure whether this is also helping the situation.) |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Charlie Nancarrow | 24/03/14 04:51 | I'd like to take some credit here. But cannot at all. Mavericks is definitely a fix. I thought the Dropbox had fixed the woes of this client machine, but has not entirely. When Google Drive loads, and even if you load it later on, it will still often cause the beeps. I still think it is an interaction with Dropbox (or potentially other Menu extra loading apps). But the problem persists, even after updating both. The problem is also fixed by a Mavericks upgrade (or even a Lion or Mountain Lion upgrade), but some clients must stay with 10.6.8 for other software (older Creative Suite etc, Suitcase or Quark) that must still be used in their particular work flows. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Charlie Nancarrow | 24/03/14 04:53 | The other thing we know, is that it started for most people in Mid february, so If we could somehow get an earlier version of Google Drive (does it auto update?) that might help? |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Nicholas Parker | 24/03/14 05:21 | I have a MacbookPro early 2011 8 Gb Ram running Mac OS 10.6.8 for reasons as above. Used Gdrive trouble-free for two years. (Along with Dropbox) After a hardware failure and clean install I downloaded and installed Gdrive Version 1.14.6059.0644 on the MBPro and this caused it to 3 beep freeze after booting up when Gdrive wants to synch. I installed the same version Gdrive on an external Hard Drive and an Imac (1,7) , both running OS 10.6.8. Google Drive is stable on both the Imac and External HD (when used as startup drive on Imac) When I start up the MBPro from the external HD, I get the 3beep crash. I don't want to upgrade OS. There also seem to be issues with Mavericks. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/drive/kqdqmoMWtk8/ajfw7JBt3FgJ Although I have found Google Drive very useful for collaborative projects, I can't risk it as things stand and will stick to Dropbox now. I've also had to warn others I work with. Attached a few Crash Reports. They are all Kernel Panics. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Charlie Nancarrow | 24/03/14 06:21 | Yes it is exactly your setup that we have seen the most issues with. 2011 MacBookPro 8GB RAM, 10.6.8 That's all the magic ingredients to make it go beep, beep, beep. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Nicholas Parker | 24/03/14 06:49 | No Dropbox on my MBPro, only Google Drive after clean Install. Imac has Dropbox - runs fine. Weird, that the issue seems to be hardware - specific. In my case anyway. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Joshua Tait | 24/03/14 06:54 | I also disabled Dropbox along with Google Drive. I have not experienced the 3-beeps crash since but have not yet updated/reactivated Gdrive or Dropbox either. It did seem to coincide with Gdrive sync rather than Dropbox though. |

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | tim kerslake | 24/03/14 15:28 | I have nothing new to add accept I don't use Drop box and when Google Drive is launched by me, (not set to start up on start up) it goes to BEEP BEEP BEEP when it tries to sync. I have the mbp 10.6.8 4 MB ram, 500GB hard drive. I don't use drop box, and I'm not sure it is even on my computer (better check that later). I always had google drive set to only launch manually. That's how I narrowed it down so fast. Launch Drive, BEEP BEEP BEEP. If a, then b. Google Drive. Like everyone says, it worked problem free until the most recent update (which I think happened behind closed doors as I don't recall agreeing to an update (probably set to automatic). I bought an AIR with mavricks. Like it. Not yet ready to ditch 10.6.8 on the pro tho. So, upgrading to mavricks isn't the answer for me yet either. reverting to an older version of google drive would work. Call it GoogleDrive10.6.8 Thanks. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | OldShopGuy | 25/03/14 20:04 | Not a solution. Need MAC OS X 10.6.8 for Rossetta Same problem appeared "out of the blue" on approx Feb 19, 2014. Through simple observation the beep, beep, beep, pause, etc, occurred right after the Google Drive icon loads in the top menu list. Computer also lockes up. My solution: Press and hold the start up button to force a shut down. Hold down shift and restart into Safe mode. Remove Google Drive app from Applications folder. Remove anything related to Google Drive from within the "home" Library folder. Dig, you will find them!!! Restart normally and all is well. Obviously a software issue with Google Drive. Have tried downloading and installing the latest Google Drive. Same results of the beep and computer lockup. Will no longer use Google Drive !!! until I see a good solution from Google on the post. 2011 Macbook Pro 13, 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i5, 4GB Ram |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Bruce Zinky | 27/03/14 05:44 | Abby, Blaming the OS (and an old and stable one at that) doesn't cover for sloppy testing of your software. Google Drive was lovely, until recently. I was certain I was having hardware problems, until ALL of my 10.6.8 machines very recently started having Kernel panics at startup, as soon as Google Drive tries to sync. Re-starting them 4 or 5 times would work, but a 10 minute ritual to use a computer is unacceptable, as is leaving a computer on 24/7. Even canceling Google Drive at startup doesn't work, as the computers will still KP when you start Google Drive This is a problem that wasn't found due to inadequate testing on your software. This is a Kernel Panic, if proper testing were done with computers and software that many folks actually use, it would have been discovered in house, long before you had to read indignant screeds such as this one. The only work around is using Google Drive from a Chrome browser. I should note that many people choose to use 10.6.8 because they need their computers to do actual work with software that's not optimized for later versions of the mac OS or newer hardware. Apple seems to hype faddy new features over functionality. To make matters worse, you're flippantly telling folks to upgrade their OS. That is bogus. Very disappointed in you and Google Drive. BZ |

"According to the information I received, the issue will be fix in a future version of the Google Drive sync client. We do apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have cause. Up to my eyballs in pressing deadlines... new MacBook goes beep beeep beep - I wanted to cry. I bought a new hard drive and new RAM in an attempt to fix these beeps. No go... beeps again. But Now... now!!! with this knowledge My Mac Is Happy. This saga took days off my life! All I can say is thanks to whoever sussed this out! Massive sigh of relief! |

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | jean-pierre de villartay | 03/04/14 08:05 | since the many engineers at Google are not moving to fix this annoying bug in v1.14 of Google drive, I decided to downgrade to 1.13 and now its works nicely......no more freezing and Beep-Beep-Beep |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | jean-pierre de villartay | 03/04/14 08:09 | By the way it's probably a good thing to have a second bootable partition on your computer so you can decide whether or not it's really a RAM problem or a sealy bug when you hear those Beeps. I knew it was not a hardware problem this way. Saves you money on new RAM ;-) |

| Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Adriano Belletti | 10/04/14 07:49 | Same problem here. It happened for the first time on 3 February. MacBook Pro (8.2) running MacOS 10.6.8 Really the issue doesn't happens so often, usually on reboot, and sometimes while running. I made lots of RAM tests with TechTool, and no issue was found. I was thinking that 3 beeps issue could had been an hardware issue due to hot temperature. But I didn't find a real relation between issue and temperature. For sure I've installed Google Drive on my MBP, so now I'll uninstall it. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | lynden | 14/04/14 11:00 | I tried that but it just seems to automatically update to v14 without any way to stop it. I can't believe Google STILL hasn't brought out a fix to this yet. |

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | jean-pierre de villartay | 15/04/14 15:03 | I think it's your job at Google to take à MacBook running under 10.6.8 to test this new version for the major inconvenient that we all experineced. If it's ok you realease if not you work on it. In french we would say " on marche sur la tête" with your proposal. Please be responsable. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | OldShopGuy | 16/04/14 10:23 | From all appearances it seems the poster M-III Level 1 within this group is receiving some sort of communication from Google. Wish I could somehow speak to someone.
Regarding the post of RishiS at Google to M-111 on April 15: See my post (OldShopGuy) from April 15. Version 1.15 still does not clear up the beep, beep, beep, pause, beep, etc with a frozen cursor, frozen computer. To further clarify: I have 2 (two) 13" MacBook Pros, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB ram, early 2011 model, Product Number MC700LL/A, running OS X 10.6.8, Last evening I again checked my Home/Library folders to make certain they contained no items regarding Google Drive. I then installed Google Drive version 1.12.5329.1887 which I have a copy of the original downloaded .dmg, I believe this is the version I was running prior to Feb 19 and had been working just fine. Somehow, Google must have done a "behind the scenes" change and the errors happened. Google, its my computer, quit doing that. When I started Google Drive, it took me through all the initial splash screens. The new install of version 1.12 appears to be working just fine. Have set it to load at system startup and not load at system startup. Works either way. Have copied a file to Google Drive and it syncs across platforms. As a safeguard I will not leave it running just in case Google again makes a "behind the scenes" change and the computer crashes while I am away from my desk. As a simple experiment, I quit Google Drive v 1.12, dragged it from my Applications folder to the trash, emptied the trash, installed Google Drive v 1.15 into the Applications folder. I turned off my internet access and started Google Drive. Received the message of no internet service but the Google Drive icon appeared in the upper menu bar, grayed out. I then enabled my wireless internet, Google Drive synced and appeared to be working. A few moments later, the endless beep, beep, beep, pause, beep, etc with a frozen cursor, frozen computer occurred. Something is happening in the sync between OS X 10.6.8 on the computer and Google's servers. Back to starting in Safe Mode, trashing anything to do with Google Drive, restarting normally and reinstall v 1.12 and load only when necessary. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !! I'm done trying to trouble shoot for Google. Will use Dropbox for most of my cloud storage. And no, there is no correlation with having Dropbox and Google Drive installed. Eliminated that too. As a side note: my two Macbook Pros are set up with a partition for Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 and a partition for Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5. Google Drive v 1.15 works just fine on OS X 10.8.5 so it is not a hardware issue. There is a conflict between OS X 10.6.8 and the sync process of Google Drive versions newer than 1.12. And no, I will not distribute my version of 1.12. They have better lawyers. It is unfortunate that no one at Google seems to be reading these posts. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | OldShopGuy | 16/04/14 17:14 | Oh Nuts !! Google Drive version 1.12 just crashed my computer contrary to my previous post. I give up. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | M-III | 22/04/14 06:16 | OldShopGuy - are you sure it didn't auto update? I have tried older versions as well and either they somehow auto updated and beep/crash or they crash the Finder normally (continually with the desktop icons disappearing every couple minutes, even on Mavericks).
This is not working out too well. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | OldShopGuy | 22/04/14 09:16 | M-III You may be correct. After my last attempt at installing version 1.12, having it appear to be working correctly, then crashing the computer the following day, it may have done an auto-update. I was disgusted enough that I did not restart in safe mode and check the version number. I have decided to not do any further installs for fear of a permanent damage to the operating system or hardware. It seems Google is not going to fix this. They apparently have "bigger fish to fry" than to worry about the small user base this appears to be affecting. I still find it strange that they appear not to be monitoring this forum and give no indication that they are aware of or working on it. I at one time had great respect for Google, not anymore. The ability to report problems is too convoluted. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | M-III | 22/04/14 11:26 | FYI's for those that do not know.
Version Check: You can check what version of Google Drive you have (without it running) if you go to your Applications folder and single click on the App, if you are in Columns View it will display the Version. Otherwise if the App is running, click About within the App icon. Disable the G.D. App from starting at Login: You might have to Safe boot, by holding down the Shift key, to take the Google Drive App out of your Login~startup from within System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items; if it keeps beeping-locking up before you can Quit the Google Drive App and proceed. Safe boot will not auto start the G.D. App. g |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Rastaman_576 | 23/04/14 17:15 | Have the same issue. Same system. But I seem to have found a solution that has worked for me. As it is a start up issue I did a google to find the location of start up items and found this very handy article, http://www.macworld.com/article/2047747/take-control-of-startup-and-login-items.html If you are like me, the reason you are clinging to this version of OS (if it is indeed an OS issue) is because you are running a lot of old software. In my case, a lot has been migrated from an old iBook. Trolling through the 3 LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons folders revealed a bunch of redundant start up items. If I was more systematic, I would have disabled individual items in these folders and restarted my system after each change. But I'm not. I was in a hurry so I deleted all the redundant junk in the ~/Library/LaunchAgents, and in the Library/LaunchAgents, Library/LaunchDaemons. But NOT System/Library. I left that alone as the article suggests. At the same time I also removed com.google.keystone.agent.plist which had a modified date from last year from my ~/Library/LaunchAgents. There is also one in Library/LaunchAgents which I left alone (same date BTW). Did a restart and everything worked. The catch, I had to manually open the GD app and set the pref to add it to the menu bar and load on reboot which it has done now on 3 occasions. It has not added com.google.keystone.agent.plist back to ~/Library/LaunchAgents. Don't think a update of software would change these. I guess a reinstall would. Maybe the conflict of 2 com.google.keystone.agent.plist in both the User and Library is the issue. Or maybe it was a conflict with a bunch of old junk in the Launch folders. Currently running GD Version 1.14.6059.0644 Hope this helps some of you |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Deanissimo | 24/04/14 00:20 | I am pretty convinced that it is an OS problem. I have not had repeat of the 'beep & crash' issue since I changed to Mavericks a few weeks ago. I have re-installed Google Drive app on my Mac and everything has gone back to normal. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Charlie Nancarrow | 24/04/14 00:35 | Oh, there’s no doubt it is a problem with Snow Leopard and that Mavericks does ‘fix’ the problem.
But it is only Google Drive that causes the problem on Snow Leopard. There’s been no other software that has caused this kind of memory corruption to the point that the hardware thinks there is a hardware failure (i.e. memory problem, 3 beeps). It may well be a bug in the Menu Extra’s API that has been fixed in mavericks, but Google Drive makes a bad bug into a nightmare. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Abby F. | 05/05/14 09:18 | Hi folks - Just wanted to give you a quick update as the team continues to work on resolving this issue. We appreciate your continued input - It's been extremely valuable as we investigate! We're still working on a complete fix, but for now you can download the newest version of Google Drive and start the application from the command line in Terminal.app: 1. Open Terminal.app 2. Type in /Applications/Google\ Drive.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Drive --overlays_enabled_finder_versions="" 3. Once the app is started go to Preferences and disable the overlays. 4. Quit. 5. Restart the application normally. Let me know if this works for you! Thanks for your patience, Abby |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Andy Griffiths | 02/05/14 05:26 | Hey Abby, I have tried your approach but without success unfortunately. Initially using your Terminal command I get a 'No such file or directory' error. This may be because the path to the application is not in the user/applications folder which I believe is the default. I tried cd back to the root and trid the command again with the same result. I even cd to the file in question going through the folder structure but then end up with an other error saying that the command is not correct. Sorry, I did not have any better news. Anyone else try this with more luck?? Thanks |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Clive Sweeting | 02/05/14 05:34 | Abby, I think you'll find that the file path you've given is incorrect for some, possibly all users. It should be /Applications/Google\ Drive.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Drive --overlays_enabled_finder_versions="" Note the .app... |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Abby F. | 05/05/14 09:19 | +Clive Sweeting - You are correct, that was an error. I've edited my original post. Thanks for catching that!! Cheers, Abby |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Rob Lewis2 | 12/05/14 18:46 | That updated code causes the "Google Drive has to quit" error, despite Drive not being launched.
On Snow Leopard – can't Google simply release a Mac Version for Snow Leopard?? I can't believe the work hours I've wasted on Drive so far... |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Christian Walther | 18/05/14 02:11 | Abby, your procedure seems to be partially effective at resolving the problem for me: When I start Google Drive 1.15.6556.8063 with --overlays_enabled_finder_versions="", it behaves itself (so far – but maybe I’m just not leaving it running long enough to hit the problem). But when I quit it and then start it normally (by double-clicking in the Finder), it still causes the freeze-and-beeping somewhere midway through synching. By “disable the overlays” I assume you mean the checkbox labeled “Show file sync status icons and right click menu”? I turned that off.
Like Rob Lewis2, I’ve also gotten the “An unknown issue occurred and Google Drive needs to quit.” dialog a few times, but not always. (MacBookPro8,2 10.6.8) |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Christian Walther | 19/05/14 13:49 | Christian Walther wrote:I spoke too soon: It has now done it even when started with --overlays_enabled_finder_versions="". So, in summary – no, the problem is not resolved in 1.15, even with the suggested command line arguments and overlay preferences. |

The actions stated above should prevent your Google Drive app from updating even if you give it permission to when it asks. |

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Abby F. | 12/06/14 09:58 | Hi folks - Thanks for continuing to post this feedback to the Google Drive community. We're working to improve performance with each version of Google Drive, and we began rolling out version 1.16 to a small number of users yesterday. All users will be automatically updated soon, but you can manually download version 1.16 here: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/drive/?hl=en. If you're still experiencing this "freeze and beep" issue once you've had the chance to run version 1.16, let us know. It'd be helpful if you could submit an error report to the team and add your Report ID to the this discussion. Please also verify in your post that you're running 1.16. Here's how you submit an error report: https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2527519?hl=en Thanks for your patience as we work to resolve this issue. Cheers, (I'm going to mark this post a Best Answer to this question. Please don't take that as a sign that Google considers this issue fully resolved. Rather, it's the best way for this forum system to display an important update at the beginning of a thread, and I want to help ensure that any newcomers to this discussion see the latest update from me.) |

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | OldShopGuy | 12/06/14 18:36 | Sorry to report Google Drive version 1.16 is doing the same as before. I downloaded and installed the new version. Appeared to be working just fine. I tried to close some open applications and do a restart but the computer locked up as I clicked the application to close it in the dock. Did a force shut down and restart. Seemed to again be working. Copied a couple of simple files to my google drive folder. After a couple of moments the beep, beep, beep, pause, beep, beep, beep started in again. Needless to say, I AGAIN, am removing Google Drive from Applications and anything related to Google Drive from my home folders. Disappointed to say the least. I won't type what I really said. By the way, your error reporting system only works if Google Drive works. Gotta be a better way to report an issue to you. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | OldShopGuy | 12/06/14 19:10 | See my posts (OldShopGuy) from April 15 and 16. Here is some of the information from those posts. My two Macbook Pros are each set up with a partition for Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 and a partition for Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5. Google Drive v 1.15 or earlier works just fine on OS X 10.8.5 so it is not a hardware issue. There is a conflict between OS X 10.6.8 and Google Drive versions newer than 1.12 including 1.16. What is strange is Google Drive is working just fine on my 15" MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, early 2008 model, OS X 10.6.8 Google needs to lay their hands on: Get a used one meeting the above specs if you have to and do some "in-house" diagnostics before you "think" you have Google Drive "fixed". Certainly Google has the financial and technical resources to do this. If you detect some animosity in my tone, you are CORRECT!! This has gone on far too long. Would really like to use Google Drive if it is working properly. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Sherman Keene | 14/06/14 09:56 | I downloaded GD 1.16 and held my breath . . . crash! So I still can't let GD start up with the OS and I can't start it from the Dock either. GD does not crash my iMac, but it has gotten lost in an endless loop of trying to upload common files like .mp3 but fails. Then it reports the un-synced files and tries to upload them again. I've checked each file and it's right where it should be in the GD sync folder. What's needed: 1) a throttle to let the use determine how much bandwidth should be use (instead of using it all) |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Paweł Kołodziejczyk | 18/06/14 14:26 | Hello, Shortly saying 1.16 does not solve the problem. Current 'best answer' for this thread IMHO should be: MIGRATE TO DROPBOX. I am hugely disappointed. 1.16 did not work (3 beeps same as before). I will have another go maybe when I update my system to newer Mac OS. I am currently running 10.6.8 and there was no need to change it until this happened. Sorry. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | jeff parke | 21/06/14 20:19 | I have had google drive on my late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. for some time. Suddenly two days ago the problem complained about here happened while in a coffee shop at lunch. An evening of memory tests while running 10.6.8 were inconclusive. Memtest in single user mode and apple hardware test never showed a problem. A partition that booted Lion worked flawlessly. It finally occurred to me this was in software. While spending three hours restoring my entire 10.6.8 partition to a state of a week earlier with time machine, I ran across this thread, using search terms that implied software causes of memory failure alarms. Google, shame on your buggy software for managing to simulate a RAM failure condition. I've had macs since 1985 and never experienced software be so idiotic. Crash & burn, fine. But set off a hardware failure alarm? At the very least please do some google search magic so that this thread appears on page one of any inquiries about macs sounding the memory failure alarm. It would have saved me about 10 hours of frustrating activity had I given disabling google drive a try before pulling memory cards. Imagine how many people have spent thousands of hours and dollars in time and unneeded memory cards trying to figure out what has happened to their machines. Jeff P |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | jeff parke | 22/06/14 09:23 | Two more comments about this. 1. My mac was running 1.16 when this happened. So much for that fixing anything with this malware. I would guess it had just recently "auto-updated" it. Why I had not seen the phenom before, like so many here, is probably just another random variable to through into the mix. But I am certainly not going to invoke google drive at startup ever again, and when/if I am inclined to use it, version 1.13 seems to work fine. Dropbox is and will remain my go-to cloud service. 2. Auto updating is sneaky and it sucks. Obviously in this case it sucks because it broke my machine and caused me hours work trying to figure out what happened. Had I just opted to update the software and this behavior commenced, I probably would have focused on the temporal relationship. The other reason it sucks is use of my resources. At the time my mac downloaded the update, I was on a PAYG mobile hotspot, that only had a few tens of megabytes left on it. The auto-update helped burn through that without my having a clue it was going on. Jeff P. |

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Grand Sinatra | 02/07/14 09:15 | Some news upon Google Drive Version 1.xx for Mac?
I have Disabled and Removed Google Drive 1.16 months ago since this problem persisted over and over again. Today I needed to install Google Drive again and BÄÄM! Kernel Panic again on my MBP OS 10.6.8 Shame on you Google! This is inacceptable! |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Todd Will | 08/07/14 07:26 | Hi Abby, I think I may be having the same problem. Not sure when my Google Drive might have been updated, but Chrome has been sluggish (I frequently needed to turn wireless off and back on to get pages to load) for at least a week and then yesterday I got the 3 beeps and freeze behavior. I shut off Google Drive this morning after reading this thread and things seem back to normal. Best, Todd Hardware Overview: Model Name: MacBook Pro System Software Overview: System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Goerge Martin | 06/08/14 22:49 | Seems like your hard drive is going to be crashed. Freezes of Mac system and beep noises both of them are the most common symptom of Macintosh hard drive failure. Unfortunately it is the most helpless scenario where you can't do much. However one thing that you can try is to backup all the important files which you want to save. The only possible to overcome this very problem is formatting. | Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | OldShopGuy | 07/08/14 06:49 | Have you not read one comment on these 5 pages. You sound an alarm about hard drive failure when clearly Google Drive is causing the problem. Get you head out of a dark place and read what is going on before you comment. It does not appear Google is going to fix this for the limited number of users still using OS X 10.6.8 on a particular computer model. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | @TallTed | 07/08/14 07:28 | Unfortunately, I cannot provide any further assistance in testing toward final resolution, as the hardware replacements (RAM and main logic board) provided under warranty (by Other World Computing and Apple, respectively) led to other issues, which eventually brought me to (still under warranty, thank Ghu!) a brand new mid-2013 MBP Retina 15" (and so to Mavericks, and never again Rosetta and the PowerPC-based tools I once relied upon). I am so far beyond disgusted by this, and the fact that the denial and misinformation continues after several months. Google -- you have a simple solution waiting for you. Have your auto-updater check the Mac OS version. If 10.6.x or earlier, DO NOT UPDATE GD past 1.12 (or was it 1.13?). If 10.7.x or later, update to wherever you like. *YOUR* kernel extension is incompatible with Mac OS X 10.6.x (and probably earlier). *YOUR* software is the add-on, and thus to blame for the consequent instability. Seriously, Google -- the software incompatibility is clear and obvious and unmistakeable and easily reproducible on a trivially created test machine. You could acquire the necessary hardware cheaply on eBay or Craigslist, and you certainly have access to the OS installer via Apple Developer Connection. You cost me, and many other people, much time and money with this carelessness and arrogant response to trouble reports. It's long past time to admit your error, and fix the problem for good and all. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | dhrbarton | 12/08/14 09:05 | I think I am experiencing a similar problem, computer freezes when the Google Drive app starts up (no beeps though). The machine is completely unresponsive, can't force quit or switch to another application. Only way to get out of it is to turn off and turn on again. Running Google Drive 1.17 on a MacBook Pro 2011, OS X 10.6.8. I can't submit an error report bc once the computer freezes, nothing can be done. Thanks! |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Raúl Moreira | 14/08/14 07:55 | Hi, I still experiencing this "freeze and beep" issue with version 1.16 and 1.17. only works with manual start and if don`t freeze always ask for upgrade. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Katherine Lucia | 02/09/14 21:55 | How did you fix this problem? I am freaking out I really need this computer to work for my work. I restart the computer. It freezes and it continues to beep nothing I can do! How can I uninstall google drive if it's frozen :( |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | @TallTed | 02/09/14 22:52 | Try doing a "safe boot" first --
1. shutdown (or reboot from one of the crazy beeping-crashes) 2. start the Mac and listen for the startup chime 3. *immediately* after the sound, press and hold down the shift key 4. keep holding and *wait* until the grey Apple logo appears 5. now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes) 6. eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT 7. continue login Now you can throw the Google Drive.app in the trash. You can still work with Google Drive content through Safari or Chrome or other web browsers. You won't be able to use the app or menu-bar extension until/unless you upgrade to OS X Lion (10.7) or later -- or until Google removes their collective head from their collective posterior, and ships a version that's actually tested good for Snow Leopard. Good luck! |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | jean-pierre de villartay | 03/09/14 00:27 | Reboot your Mac from a separate partition (if you created one) or from an external source, get rid of google drive, restart an install Google Drive v1.13 which does not bug. Good luck |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Raúl Moreira | 03/09/14 00:34 | My solution was easier. 1. Turn on the computer without the network cable. 2. Unistall Google Drive. If you use wifi network, there are secons before the crash. You can turn it off. You can also turn off the router a moment. No internet connection - no crash. Google does not have a solution for months. Forget Google Drive. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Steven Zembriski | 04/09/14 04:42 | I am so happy I found this post,I replaced the memory on my daughters MBP 10.6.8 after the Apple tech told her the freezing and 3 beeps were a bad memory module or slot, that didn't fix it so I was about to buy a logic board when I ran into this post. Deleted google drive and sofar the 3 beeps and freezing are gone. What looked like a hardware problem ended up being google drive. I wonder how many other people replaced good hardware because of google drive. Thanks google!!!!!! |
| Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Katrina Batelaan | 04/09/14 16:55 | Google sucks. I had to tryand beat the time until it froze to get it off. I was going to use google drive for a school project but it's corruptive. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Raúl Moreira | 05/09/14 00:08 | Disconnect from Internet before. After, you only have to click the icon on the top bar and select close option. Then go to apps folder and throw it to trash. |
| Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Red Jamora | 06/09/14 23:37 | The same thing is happening right now, but I didn't have any google drive in it. This is just as how I got it from the store. I dunno if its cos it's old already. I've had this since I was high school and I'm now a senior college student. What should I do? |
| Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | Kommentatoren Hermansen | 07/09/14 13:26 | Hello, my Imac is turning black and beeps 3 times, but i got a bigger problem! How can i get into the computer and uninstall google drive when it is only black and beeping? |

| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | @TallTed | 07/09/14 17:10 | Red Jamora -- Google Drive is software, not hardware. You may have installed the software. Try taking the steps I outlined a few posts above in this thread. If those don't help, then you *may* have actual hardware issues. Kommentatoren Hermansen -- Try taking the steps I outlined a few posts back in this thread, to do a "safe boot". |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | CharlotteLStace | 22/09/14 14:14 | Hi, I keep getting the exact same problem ever since I downloaded Google Drive. I'm running version 1.17. I have reported the problem a few times but maybe the error report didn't go through as I haven't got anything back.... Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Charlotte |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | @TallTed | 22/09/14 16:35 | You basically have three options, Charlotte. 1. Upgrade to OS X Lion (10.7) or later; or 2. Remove Google Drive, and don't install it again until you do that upgrade; or 3. Start a sit-in at Google's campus, which can only end with them shipping a fixed build of GDrive that will not auto-update beyond 1.12 (or maybe it was 1.13) when on Snow Leopard (10.6). #2 is my recommendation for anyone who really does need Snow Leopard's Rosetta PPC emulation. #3 would be great, if anyone has the resources to get and stay on campus long enough to make an impression. |
| Re: Mac Freezes and Beeps Three Times | EscoAmy | 02/10/14 20:10 | Has anyone successfully used Google Software Update to set the update to manual so that running 1.12 can be used permanently? Any feedback, please. |
