I cracked my screen on the Nexus 5 and it still works but would like to get it replaced or the handset replaced.
Whats the best option for me here?

It sucks when you receive an item that is broken like that, you should contact Google and let them know that your phone seems to have been damaged during shipping and that you need to RMA it. Clumsy UPS guys
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||david.king||11/9/13 4:41 AM|
From what the OP said, it unfortunately sounds like he/she cracked the screen themselves. No fault by delivery services in this case.

What's the quickest way to getting my cracked screen repaired ?
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||N2TheBlu||11/9/13 10:45 AM|
I think he was being facetious ;)
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||11/9/13 4:39 PM|
That would be a local repair shop assuming you can find one that has the parts, tools and expertise to do it. Otherwise, your next best option most likely is the manufacturer.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||ChrisC23||11/10/13 11:32 AM|
Have you found a solution to this yet? I also just woke up and found a crack going across my screen but nothing else is damaged. I'm wondering if I could manage to get it covered through the warranty. Has anyone else had experience with this?
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Dillan V||11/10/13 4:05 PM|
Not yet I'm afraid, not much information out there, LGs website doesn't list the phone on their repair service. I have yet to give Google or LG support a phone call to find out.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Romy Bermudez||11/10/13 9:47 PM|
I found a small crack on the left/middle of my screen this morning. I have been babying this phone since day 1. I have not dropped it or anything. The hairline crack just appeared... I'm deeply saddened. It's barely noticeable but I don't want it to become worse. I called google and they said there was nothing they could do about it.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||RexxC||11/10/13 9:57 PM|
I dont know about this one. Sounds fishy. Ive dropped and kicked mine across the floor at-least twice and nothing. This Gorilla glass is tough as nails and you want us to believe the crack "just appeared".
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Romy Bermudez||11/10/13 10:07 PM|
It does sound fishy but I don't have any reason to lie on a forum. I'm not going to get a replacement screen/phone from people on here so there's no reason to fabricate a story. I am simply stating my experience with the screen and empathizing with ChrisC23. The funny thing is that I dropped my Nexus 4 multiple times and it never cracked. It's just a bummer on my part; this phone I've been waiting for so long is tainted. Ahhhh! Hopefully the crack doesn't spread.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Steve.SQL||11/11/13 2:52 AM|
dropped my Nexus 5 today and got a large crack... it did not happen on my previous Galaxy Nexus which dropped several times...
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||11/11/13 3:54 AM|
If you go check the "Nexus 5 Drop Test" on youtube, it seems its front glass shatters quite spectacularly.
Harder materials tend to shatter more easily since they have no other way of relieving excess stress from things like impacts.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Gursagar Singh||11/13/13 9:49 AM|
I wouldn't blame anyone but LG andgoogle for making a phone in such haste with shoddy quality. I dropped my S3 an ample number of times and it never cracked. 1 time with this phone and the entire screen shattered. I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed but the phone is put together pretty poorly. The camera doesn't focus properly or take much light in, the touchscreen keyboard doesn't pick up characters, the speakers are poor quality, the front camera only takes a straight photo at an angle. In all honesty this should be covered by warranty as accident forgiveness. If not there's ways around it :)
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||11/13/13 12:13 PM|
dropped my Nexus 5 today and got a large crack... it did not happen on my previous Galaxy Nexus which dropped several times...
The Galaxy Nexus has a relatively thick plastic trim all around the screen so unless it lands almost directly on its face, the trim will take the brunt of the hit and spread it across the whole phone through the mid-frame and rear cover. The N5 has practically edge-to-edge glass so if it lands with the front facing somewhat down, the glass will make practically direct contact with whatever it is crashing into. Sharp impact on hardened or tempered glass = shatter.
I bet shattered screens are going to become much more common as more manufacturers start designing more devices with edge-to-edge glass. Repair shops and companies involved in manufacturing front-panel assemblies are going to be happy.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||11/14/13 2:41 PM|
I'm starting to suspect there's a scam at work here. I set my phone face down on a desk and when I picked it up, the screen was shattered. Google said they wouldn't take it back because it's physically damaged. LG said they won't take it back because it's damaged. IT GOT DAMAGED DURING THE COURSE OF ORDINARY USE!!!! The only reason setting a phone down would shatter a screen is if the screen is faulty!
I don't know if any of you noticed this too, but from the time I pulled mine out of the box, pressing on the screen with even ordinary strength would cause the liquid in the LCD screen to move. There shouldn't be that much give in glass, period.
I can't believe LG and Google are getting away with selling faulty devices with bad screens, then scamming people out of another $146 to repair them. This is absurd.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Gursagar Singh||11/14/13 2:46 PM|
I agree with you 100%. Google and LG made a very cheap and defective smart phone not capable of useage in the real world. Also the edge to edge screen is their genius way of making even more money. Look we all know being honest has never worked with mobile companies... Get your phone to stop working completely or drop calls or tamper the antenna and demand a new phone. They can't say no.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||11/14/13 2:48 PM|
They can (and will) if the screen is broken!
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Gursagar Singh||11/14/13 2:53 PM|
Screen is irrelevant when your not getting any service or phone calls. My friendS work for att and Verizon and they both told me that @killerteacup
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||11/14/13 2:58 PM|
Neither Verizon nor AT&T are selling the phone, so what difference does that make? It does work on AT&T's network, but they're not selling it. The way they warranty devices they sell is totally irrelevant.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Gursagar Singh||11/14/13 3:02 PM|
I know that but then it becomes a mehanical defect not attributable to a cracked screen. Regardless of who it is the phone is defective.... Others who have gotten replacements have done that or they said it was broken through shipping and got immediate replacements
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Remifenta||11/14/13 10:13 PM|
I have been very careful with my Nexus 5, but I noticed a deep scratch in the middle-right area, with no inciting event. I am wondering if the component layers of the glass have not set properly.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Le John||11/15/13 7:01 PM|
Sorry that you guys are getting cracks already. :c
I too have been waiting for a long time to get my hands on the next Nexus, and have been babying it since day 1, however accidents have happened to mine. I'm lucky nothing happened at all! I also watched the drop test on youtube prior towards my drop. I was terrified as it was happening, then it came out almost unscathed.
Threads like these are teaching me a lesson to not put my phone in my coat's pocket anymore.

Dropped my Nexus 5 today while jogging and the screen shattered. Had a screen cover and case on it too. Can't tell you how many times I dropped my Galaxy Nexus and still after two years it had no scratches, dents, or cracks.
Oh well, used LGs webform to request service, we'll see what they say.

how much is the cost.. My Nexus 5 Screen is shattered.. it works fine .. but looks bad... Are they just replacing glass.\
Can u send me that contact number of repair from LG.
I am actually very disappointed with quality of N5. I have so many previous phones drop like that .. but never seen this kind of damage..
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||ysandhu||11/18/13 7:23 AM|
I am in Canada. and i called the number LG gave me.. its some other company.. they told it will cost $230..
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||11/18/13 7:28 AM|
Your other phones probably had a thicker edge around the screen taking the brunt of the hits.
As for the cost, someone in one of the other broken screen threads said he got a quote directly from LG at $146.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||11/18/13 8:08 AM|
They told me it'd cost $146 US to replace my screen. So, in the end, I don't have a $399 phone, which is a great unlocked price. I have a $549 phone, which is a very ordinary unlocked price, except that the phone is extremely fragile, so I don't think it's even worth that.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Elmopio||11/18/13 11:47 AM|
I received my n5 on my birthday and over the weekend it fell out of my pocket when I was sitting on a bar stool. three and half feet off the ground. First time I dropped it. I still cant believe it shattered. I thought gorilla glass 3 was durable. Does anyone else think the glass is defective? Called LG and Google this morning, Nobody wants to cover it. Just sent it to LG a little while ago. I even sent it overnight so it will be in Texas by 12pm their time.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||11/18/13 11:50 AM|
I absolutely believe the glass is defective. In fact, I'm starting to think they know that.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Gursagar Singh||11/18/13 11:50 AM|
I advise everyone to please PLEASE go to BBB website and file a complaint. Also if you know anyone who's thinking of getting the N5 advise them otherwise.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||ysandhu||11/18/13 11:51 AM|
I definitely think there is so problem. I never though phone will be that fragile.. And on top of that I am in canada.. no way to get it fixed under 230-250..
Now I have this nice phone with shattered screen on one side. It make me sad to look at this one. so keep hiding in my pocket.. it sucks..
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Dillan V||11/18/13 11:54 AM|
Simple physics broke the phone, the glass is so close to the edge of the phone, not defected glass.
Case is a must
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||ysandhu||11/18/13 11:56 AM|
I ordered a case.. still in shipping.. and broke phone before.. !!
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Dillan V||11/18/13 11:59 AM|
Same scenario here, no official cases available during launch and no reviews to base the purchase of a third party one.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Jordan Man||11/18/13 12:54 PM|
So I had purchased the Spigen Ultra Fit case (from Amazon at http://amzn.to/HVBomW). Hindsight being 20/20, this is not a good case to have bought. It clearly did nothing to protect the Nexus's screen from shattering. My previous case for my Galaxy Nexus, was a soft rubber, perhaps a couple of mm thick, and has successfully kept it damage free over two years of dropping the phone.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||busybess||11/18/13 2:36 PM|
I dropped mine 6 inches flat on its face and it shattered too. Quotes around $300 to $350 to fix in Canada. I booted my Galaxy Nexus with no screen protector across a parking lot and it didn't break. So dissapointed with the quality on this.

I find all this talk about cracked glass very interesting. When Corning first released gorilla glass, it was virtually unbreakable. Are people saying that they have ruined gorilla glass by making it breakable now? if so, that is VERY disappointing.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||11/19/13 7:28 AM|
Either Gorilla Glass is actually EXTREMELY fragile now (read the various ways people's phones have broken), or the phone isn't actually made with Gorilla Glass at all. Either way, it's garbage.

I have found the exact same thing this morning when I put the Nexus 5 into my suit jacket pocket. I took it out when I got to work and this exact same crack appeared. Manufacturer defect.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||11/20/13 8:45 AM|
That's exactly what I think it is too. But how do we get anyone at LG or Google to fess up to it?
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||ysandhu||11/20/13 8:52 AM|
Since the glass quality is bad. i previously decided not to get it fixed.. when especially in Canada it cost more than 230 to get it fixed. But after some use with my phone i realized the screen shatter at right top corner has covered proximity sensor now. so When i call and bring back phone to disconnect or do something else screen do not come up.. even after hitting power button.
So I have to bite bullet.. have ordered assembly from aliexpress.. about 150 .. will try to change it myself.. I am so frustrated..
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Jonathan Reichel||11/20/13 9:02 AM|
well we just need to keep posting here and calling them until they fix this a issue. its insane for a phone to crack from 0 stress. Also the bumpers were not even available until yesterday. Not that It should need one.

|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Akazecks||11/20/13 7:59 PM|
I fix phones at my shop and other things. The Nexus 5 will be expensive to fix at any repair place. Why? The part itself costs around 140+ dollars and then you are paying labor on top. I'll tell you guys what I tell my customers, and this is honest advice, either buy a cheap smart phone that you wouldn't care if it breaks or buy a protective case for your phone. Don't skimp on the case, it is to protect your investment after all.
146 dollars is a VERY good price for fixing a phone that just launched. I always find it funny when people buy a phone that just came out and wonder why it costs them so much to fix. Parts aren't cheap on new phones.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||11/20/13 11:24 PM|
I sat it face down my desk and came back to a shattered screen.
Did you get an SMS, call or anything that may have caused vibration to go off? I just had the crazy idea that the vibrator going off while the glass is touching a hard surface/object might be enough to crack it without touching or dropping it.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||11/21/13 4:24 AM|
It's not that the cost surprises me. It's that, if the home breaks so easily under extremely light ordinary usage like setting it on a bed or pulling it out of a pocket, there is clearly a manufacturer's defect with the glass and the manufacturer should have to honor the warranty they provide on their workmanship.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||11/21/13 4:25 AM|
Mine didn't vibrate when the screen broke. One of the first things I did when I got it was turn off every possible vibration function. Just can't stand it when phones vibrate. I just set it down. Piece of junk.

|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||sadNexus5user||11/21/13 11:23 AM|
Extremely fragile! I've dropped my iPhone AND my Windows phone (Nokia, Gorilla Glass 2) and they've never shattered so spectacularly. How is the glass stronger? I'm actually very curious as to why they are marketing this as the "stronger" glass.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||11/21/13 3:48 PM|
I'm actually very curious as to why they are marketing this as the "stronger" glass.
When I read Corning's Gorilla 3 marketing material, it only mentioned improve resilience against scratching, crack propagation and chemicals. I do not remember seeing mentions of being more resistant to impacts or whatever other factors may be at work in those spontaneously shattering screens.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Kit Palencar||11/21/13 7:24 PM|
I was just about to say the exact. Gorilla Glass is misconstrued as being shatter and impact resistant, yet it is only resistant to scratching and scuffing. I'm awaiting a quote from LG.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Angela_C||11/21/13 9:01 PM|
Try "fundamentally tougher" and "3x more damage resistant than Gorilla Glass 2". Resistance to chemicals? Like any user is testing chemicals on the glass - if they're going to make a big stink about how it's stronger, why isn't it "fundamentally tougher" where it matters, ie the actual damage to screens. Perhaps LG+Google should have considered how fragile the glass actually is, and made a phone around that. Alls I'm saying is, it's considerably shatter-prone relative to other glass phones (that have been repeatedly dropped, high impact, and never splintered like so).
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||11/22/13 7:32 AM|
Perhaps LG+Google should have considered how fragile the glass actually is
The glass is not necessarily "more fragile" - you would need normalized impact tests rather than uncontrolled drop tests to find out for sure if the glass itself is truly more fragile.
Most "other phones" have much thicker plastic trim around the front glass and since phones almost never fall exactly face-down, the extra trim is likely enough to divert most of the impact energy from uncontrolled drop tests away from the glass. If you look at the N5's drop tests, its screen survives dropping on its back and edges/corner as long as it does not land at some significant face-down angle. Very few (if any) phones' front glass would survive a true face-down drop test where the glass hits the ground first.
People want thinner, lighter, shinier gadgets and sometimes, practical limits get discovered... sometimes, the bleeding edge is literal.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Simonbarsinistr||11/23/13 3:50 AM|
As a phone repair person, I can assure everyone that the glass isn't getting weaker, it's the lack of a protective bezel, and harder glass that's causing the breakage. All newer phones that have edge to edge glass are going to have this issue. The Moto X seems particularly scary for me because it's glass actually wraps around the side! No matter what, with a phone like this, you need to run a protective case on it, or you run the risk of breaking it.
And I don't mean an otterbox or anything, just a TPU case, or I'm using the Spigen ultra slim. I don't like using cases either, since it takes away from how thin the phone is on it's own, but it's very risky not having any shock protection on it.
The bad news for all of you that have already broken your phones is that you've done it so early, that large amounts of replacement parts aren't available, and what is available is being sold at a premium. The good news is that the digitizer still works after the glass is broken, unlike the Nexus 4, so that means it's possible to replace only the glass, and when just the glass is available, it should be pretty cheap. I'm guessing $25 bucks. Anyone good at DIY repair, with a hairdryer, razor blade, poker cards and patience should be able to remove the glass without damaging the LCD. Anyone not good at self repair is still at the mercy of whatever repair shops are going to charge.
The good news for me is that you suckers that break your phones are selling them for cheap! So I already got my second N5 that I'm patiently waiting for cheap repair glass to come out for! $250 unlocked phone, now that's a deal!

|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Simonbarsinistr||11/24/13 3:47 AM|
I'm not buying the "phone broke spontaneously" posts, this drop test shows the phone finally succumbing to a face down hit from 4 feet, but it takes the other two 4 foot falls with side impacts better than I would have thought, given the thin bezel. That doesn't look like a phone that breaks too easily, it looks like it breaks like almost any other new phone does.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Vytas Soderholm||11/24/13 7:00 AM|
It was very cold today and I live in Minnesota, it was a 2 ft side hit.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||jwilder||11/24/13 7:57 AM|
I still am confused by all this cracked problems. Here is a video from Corning about Gorilla Glass 2, and Glass 3 is supposed to be even better. What am I missing? How can the video show one thing and people experience something different?
This is posted BY Corning.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||11/24/13 10:33 AM|
In most of Corning's lab demos, the glass is unconstrained: it is free to bend or move in whichever direction will most effectively relieve stress. Once laminated into an actual screen, there is the mass and stiffness of the rest of the device preventing the glass from bending or moving away from something that is hitting it.What am I missing? How can the video show one thing and people experience something different?
|(unknown)||11/24/13 10:36 AM||<This message has been deleted.>|
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Simonbarsinistr||11/24/13 10:42 AM|
What you're also missing is the same thing most others here are missing, which is how hardened glass behaves. Think of tempered glass in an car door window, it can take an impact in the open area of the window, but if you hit it in a corner, or on an edge, the whole thing will shatter. The hardened glass is resistant to scratching, but it's less flexible and naturally more brittle. Edge impacts and point loading are very effective ways to break hardened glass in almost any application.

|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||bfettd||11/25/13 5:05 AM|
Are you sure the digitizer is separate? I'm debating buying an N5 if that's the case because I just borked my N4 for the third time (and at ~$175/pop, this is getting silly).
Also - now that I concede a case is a necessary evil, which would you recommend?
Does everyone else's phone work even though the glass is cracked?
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Simonbarsinistr||11/25/13 6:13 AM|
That drop test I posted shows the touchscreen still functioning, all the broken N5 listings I've seen say the touchscreen is still functional, and the one broken N5 I bought still fully works. I'm using it to test drive roms.
Now the digitizer could be an overlay on the glass, but I doubt it. It's definitely not imprinted on the glass like the N4,if it was it would stop functioning when the glass broke, because the circuit would be broken too.
Since I don't like cases, I try to get as little case as I can that will still offer protection. So I got the Spigen ultra slim case, and so far it's been nice. Not much added bulk, it simulates the finish of the phone itself, and looks nice. I haven't dropped the phone yet, so I haven't tested it's durability, and I hope not to!
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||bfettd||11/25/13 6:21 AM|
Yup - I saw the same droptest video, but you seem to have multiple other sources with the same confirmation. That's great - I'm about to shell out my third repair cost for my N4... (meaning I've bought it more than twice now).
Looks like the screen is pretty fragile - but I think you're right, in time the glass will be $50 or even $25 so replacing it will be a non-issue. I'm glad LG actually fixed the design flaw.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Simonbarsinistr||11/25/13 6:39 AM|
Me too, I was happy to see this didn't share that fault with the N4.
Strangely, from what I've seen and read, the LG G2 DOES have the same problem as the N4. If you break the glass, the touchscreen quits responding. I find that odd, since the G2 and N5 are hardware siblings.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Kit Palencar||11/25/13 9:58 PM|
Just got my quote. $146. Also, is it just me or is LG's phone line really quiet?
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Vytas Soderholm||11/26/13 9:29 AM|
I'm probably going to send it in as well. The part is fused anyway, it will never be cheap enough for me to fix manually so it's better just to get a repair from LG.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Kit Palencar||11/26/13 10:29 AM|
Also, it takes about 5-7 days to get it back. The LG reps are very friendly though. Spoke to an executive supervisor, "Brandon" and he was very helpful. Fragile phone, great service.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||11/26/13 10:45 AM|
I'm shocked to hear you say you've received such good service. I had to talk to three levels of supervisors only to get called a liar by the last one. I finally got them to send the phone back as-is, but they stole my original packaging and returned it in a card stock box--not even corrugated cardboard!--cushioned by a crumpled up piece of computer paper and a crumpled plastic bag. I had convinced a rep from Google to let me send it back and get a refund, but now that LG stole my packaging, they can't take it back.
I've tried talking to them by phone, email, online chat, and Twitter. I can't even get anyone to PRETEND they're going to try to help me.
They screwed me by sending a faulty phone, then they screwed me by deciding not to honor the warranty on their workmanship, and now they've screwed me by stealing my original packaging! This is absolutely the last time I will ever do business with LG!
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||James Humphries||11/26/13 11:21 AM|
Highly doubt you've drop kicked it across the room, I dropped mine from about a foot and its completely smashed.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Allan Gallagher||11/28/13 2:31 AM|
Oh great, a crack has formed on my nexus 5. I haven't dropped it or scratched it. It has been in my pocket all the time...I am gutted to say the least. Top right corner running away from the speaker to the edge of the screen. Wtf!!!! I am known for looking after my phones. This is not good.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||chris mccord||11/28/13 10:45 AM|
i have the same crack and it was in my pocket as well. I would if this a as defect.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||José Ramón Rivera||11/29/13 10:34 AM|
the screen sucks! A 30 cm high drop and it cracked. I feel robbed.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Brett Sharp||11/30/13 1:47 PM|
You should feel robbed Google and LG sell nothing but CRAP! Good luck getting anything from Google or LG. LG doesnt even warranty Nexus products. Google is just a joke! If they gave me a phone I still wouldnt take it! Ive got dead pixels and I havent even had the phone for 30 days and they wanna charge me $500 to just get a replacement. But to them Everyone just has $500 dollars laying around for them to charge you apparently! FU Google and LG!
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Simonbarsinistr||11/30/13 2:57 PM|
Anyone who is disgusted with their N5, I'd be down to buy it. You might as well get something back, and I've seen them selling consistently for around $200.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Brett Sharp||11/30/13 3:00 PM|
I'll sell you mine for $300
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Simonbarsinistr||11/30/13 3:02 PM|
You're valuing the hunk of junk you just finished disparaging pretty high, even though it's broken.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||11/30/13 3:56 PM|
With repair cost still in the neighborhood of $150, I doubt many will want to buy a cracked phone for significantly more than $200. Maybe $250 for a 32GB version.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Simonbarsinistr||11/30/13 4:17 PM|
Well put Daniel, that seems to be the valuation on ebay.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Scott Thumlert||12/1/13 5:28 PM|
Screen cracked and I didn't even drop it!!! It was in my back pocket in soft protective case and developed one crack from left to right in upper third of screen. Now screen is pressing ALL the buttons at once. Been battling with Koodo who sold me the phone to warranty it. Very disappointing.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Audrey Hart||12/1/13 7:32 PM|
I have a very good case on my Nexus 5 with good edges, I put it in my pocket like I always do, and it cracked spectacularly when I sat down. That's crap. I had a nexus 1 for 3 1/2 years and never got anything besides a tiny hairline crack in the corner.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Leonidas Kalai||12/2/13 12:48 AM|
Did LG get back to you? How much are they charging? And how long?
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Kit Palencar||12/2/13 6:54 AM|
LG got back to me after about three days (I even next-day aired it; don't do that). Anyways, they called back and I wasn't around so they left a message for me to call back. Basically, the first call was to approve the payment and cost, which was $146 USD. I paid using a credit card and they promptly shipped out the next day (Nov. 27th), just waiting on it now.
I highly recommend getting a case for this phone, as it's very fragile. Mine came a day too late (dropped it the day before).
Edit: They told me five to seven days (5-7 days).
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||inglorious_mustard||12/2/13 8:52 AM|
You know, it really depends on where it hit where you dropped it..
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||inglorious_mustard||12/2/13 8:54 AM|
Yes, I agree
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Matt Carling||12/2/13 11:23 PM|
Same. Mine has a hairline crack across the bottom right corner from carrying in my front pocket walking around the Sydney zoo. Never dropped. Kids have never even touched it yet since I don't have a screen protector yet. Easily the most fragile phone I have owned :(
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Damon Rose||12/3/13 10:09 AM|
It was in my back pocket in soft protective case and developed one crack from left to right in upper third of screen.
There's your problem mate. Never, EVER put something expensive and breakable in your back pocket. It goes right along side leaving your phone in your pants when you do laundry.

|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Irvington||12/7/13 11:43 AM|
What did you guys do?I literally closed my car trunk on mine so hard it left a diagonal dust line across the glass by the force of the trunk locking behind it. It was sticking half way out of trunk when I wondered where I left my phone haha.
These things are pretty tough. I don't think class action will fly for a few defects.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||jcesar085||12/7/13 2:58 PM|
I broke my screen too just 3 days ago was trying to sell it wonder how much i can ask for it or maybe send it back to texas from florida to see how much they would charged.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Damon Rose||12/7/13 3:34 PM|
I have a hard time believing that this device is as fragile as reported. If your not using a good case (or a case at all) that might be the main problem. Got my wife to get an Otter box case for her Galaxy S4 and she had dropped it numerous times, even on concrete with no physical damage.
Screens just so not crack this easily, especially with gorilla glass
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||12/7/13 3:36 PM|
Damon, you're right. They shouldn't. That's why we're so upset that these phones are so poorly made. It's awful.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||12/8/13 2:25 PM|
Screens just so not crack this easily, especially with gorilla glass
The problem with glass is the harder you make it (or anything else) to reduce the number of other things it can come in contact with that can potentially scratch it, the more easily it shatters on a sharp impact like hitting ceramic or concrete glass-first. The trend towards thinner bezels and trims around the screen progressively increases the likelihood of glass touching down first and the amount of force the glass edges get subjected to on impact
You do not need much force to break glass if the hit is sharp enough.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||12/8/13 8:08 PM|
Just got my refund from Google! They refunded the whole cost of my 32GB Nexus 5, including shipping! I set it down face down on a desktop and picked it up to discover shattered glass. I went through several levels of "Can I please speak to your supervisor?" and finally got to talk by email with a rep named Calvin who was able to issue me an RMA and let me return the phone for a full refund. I bought an HTC One instead and put it in an Otterbox. Glad to finally have this whole episode behind me!
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||BParekh||12/8/13 8:48 PM|
Which country are you located? I am in Melbourne, Australia and trying to tell facts to google...but they keep singing same song..."customer induced damage" and can not repair under warranty.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||12/8/13 8:53 PM|
I'm in the US, and I didn't ask them to repair or replace it, just refund it. I told them I was very dissatisfied with the quality of the phone since it broke when I just set it down and I did not want them to repair or replace it because then I'd still be stuck with a stupidly fragile phone!
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||nectavius||12/10/13 4:14 PM|
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||12/10/13 5:00 PM|
This may be why it is relatively expensive:
Nothing new there. The majority of newer phones and tablets have laminated LCD-touch-front-glass assemblies because it makes the devices thinner, lighter, brighter, sharper, etc. Without tight lamination to minimize internal refraction, diffraction, reflections and diffusion, those tiny HD screens would turn into blurry messes.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Aaron Bush333||12/10/13 6:30 PM|
Who did you call or talk to to get your refund?
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||killerteacup||12/10/13 6:34 PM|
Talked to Google Play customer service by phone. Kept requesting supervisors. Was finally contacted by email by a guy named Calvin. When I replied to the email, it went straight to him somehow, but only during his work hours, and the email address was just the general Google Play support email. Not sure how anyone else could get through to him. I emphasized that the screen had some give in it as soon as I took it out of the box and broke under very ordinary usage within four days of receiving it.
|Cracked my Nexus 5||Kit Palencar||12/10/13 7:43 PM|
I had my phone screen replaced at LG for 146 USD. Took about two weeks. Also, I have a Spigen ultra thin bumper case on and just dropped it face first. It's perfectly fine.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Debra M. Williams||12/10/13 8:56 PM|
Yes I woke up and there was a crack going across my screen as well and I've no clue what happened. Screen is really weak for what I paid on phone it needs to be fixed.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Tony Kong||12/10/13 10:04 PM|
Happen to me too. Placed phone facedown walked away came back with a hairline crack. I did get a call during the time I was away but, it wasn't on anything hard. Just on a glass surface. Obviously Google or LG wouldn't believe such an answer, either would I. Until now...
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||DNev||12/11/13 2:42 PM|
Dropped my phone from about 2 feet, and the screen shattered. My Galaxy Nexus lasted for 2+ years without the screen so much as chipping. This has got to be something that they will address!
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Elmopio||12/11/13 3:52 PM|
I agree. But they have to first acknowledge the issue. Its has been 3 weeks and I am finally receiving my phone tomorrow from RMA. $146 usd later its coming back home. I still believe there is a huge defect. Is the bezel too thin? Yes But the glass should hold up. Come on its GG3. If any case. I am still pissed that this happen. Three feet off the ground? It shouldn't crack.
I haven't been around in here so if I missed something please let me know. It was just too depressing to read some posts. Good Luck I understand all your pain.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Daniel_S.||12/11/13 6:00 PM|
Is the bezel too thin? Yes But the glass should hold up. Come on its GG3.
I do not think there is any tempered or hardened glass that can take a significant sharp direct hit without shattering: scratch-resistant glass is made by doping the glass surface with potassium or other elements that increase surface stresses to make them harder and more difficult to scratch which has the highly predictable and unfortunate side-effect that when the glass starts to relieve itself of that stress by cracking, it usually does so spectacularly.
If you look at amateur/unscientific drop tests on Youtube, pretty much all screens that lack a thick enough trim around the edges to prevent the screen from actually touching the ground do shatter when devices fall almost face-down.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Nikhil Anthony||12/12/13 1:08 AM|
The same thing happened to my nexus tablet..I dont remember dropping it
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Audrey Hart||12/12/13 9:00 AM|
Mailed my phone a week ago (2 day shipping) and finally heard from LG. $153 to fix my screen. Then it will take another week or 10 days to get my phone back. That's just ridiculous for what they are charging me. LG and Google need to take more responsibility for their products. It should not cost 2/5 of my total phone price just to fix the screen.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Elmopio||12/12/13 9:50 AM|
Today I received my phone from LG's RMA center and its not the same phone. I just paid for a refurb. IMEI is not the same and there isnt a scuff from where I dropped it. But its back now to look for a case.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Mathew Haxton||12/12/13 6:10 PM|
I am in a similar situation where my screen cracked. I have never dropped it and after 5 days of owning it the entire screen has splintered. I may have been able to live with it if it was a small fracture but there are small shards falling out as time goes on. I have contacted best buy (where it was purchased), Google, and LG and I am getting a lot of finger pointing. Google said they would have replaced it if I ordered it through the play store but couldn't help as they were not the manufacture of the phone. LG after many attempts finally didn't hang up on me or tell me I was lying, explained that the do not have a warranty for their phones that the sell to other companies (smells fishy and terrible attitude). Needless to say not working with LG again. I have talked to best buy but they say it is a physical issue and I will have to go through insurance. In other words I had to pay $150 for the plan just to be activated and another $150for one of my 3 replacements. That is the same price as a new phone after 5 days. The funny part is I had to replace my last one because of another manufacturer defect. In total its been about 20 days of ownership and about 4 days of viable use. LG did acknowledge the defect as their fault but would not take ownership of replacing it. I will try to tell you what happens tomorrow but outlook is not good at this point.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||jjpark||12/13/13 6:26 AM|
For people wondering about the high cost of repair on the Nexus 5 screen - according to ifixit the glass, LCD, digitizer, ceramic buttons, along with the aluminum sub frame seems to basically be a single piece. The part alone is estimated at around $200, so if you got it fixed for $150 that appears to be a good deal....
In terms of screens cracking without being dropped, I wonder if rapid temperature change could've caused them? I noticed a lot of those people said the phone was face down. Seems improbable, but maybe the glass was warm from being in a pocket(I imagine most people carry the phone with glass towards their body) then got chilled quickly when placed face down on a table.

Mine feel out of my pants pocket, hit the ground and shattered. Bad design. They must have known about this. This is my first broken phone ever. Last one I will buy.
|Cracked my Nexus 5||Mathew Haxton||12/14/13 1:03 PM|
Wanted to give an update. I went back to bestbuy where I purchased the phone and talked to them about it. They gave the same argument as before where they couldn't fix it because it was a physical issue. I had them call into corporate and talk to them about it. They acknowledged that the note 2 has the same issue and there is a no lemon law that protects customers from such products. In order to go this route I had to provide the phone with no other physical damage and provide proof that it could have been a defect from the manufacture. I called up LG and had them say that it was an issue but they wouldn't fix it which I knew from before. All in all its being fixed at no charge but it was a lot of hoops to jump through and you have to be able to prove that it wasn't your fault. Hope this help out anyone who also has this problem. If you have any questions feel free to ask, I would love to help out if I can.

They must have know that you'd drop your phone? Phones break when you drop them, it's just the way it is.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||thekello||12/14/13 10:55 PM|
I have had my nexus for around a month now but recently when I picked it up it had large, deep scratches in the screen. I don't know how I got these scratches but I am annoyed because they shouldn't be there. I mean it has one of, if not the most scratch resistant screens. This really irritates me because I have no idea why it is scratched, and I also thought it would be a lot harder to scratch, considering it has gorilla glass 3.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Kurt Sk||12/15/13 7:09 AM|
The problem I have with it breaking is it hit the side. Not the front where the glass is. They should be able to withstand that from a lower velocity of a short fall. So now phones should break from a impact on sides and front? Maybe they should inform customers of this and you should leave it at home so you don't risk breaking it. Oh wait, this is a mobile device. Shouldn't mobile devices be able to withstand more of a fall? Maybe they should not call it a mobile device?

Dropped mine a few times... Softwood floors and carpet. Not on anything hard to be fair. Mine cracked when I was on the train and got off. Think the change of temp did it. Did nothing to cause this... Not best pleased.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Scott Bronson||12/17/13 12:08 PM|
I've been a big Nexus fan for years. Not anymore. This phone is stupid fragile.
A week ago a crack appeared in the bottom left corner and slowly worked its way to the upper right. No big deal, the phone still works and looks fine. Figured I sat on it or something, can live with it. Today a crack appeared bottom center and is going straight upward.
I've never dropped it and it's always been in a bumper case. Treated exactly the same as my Nexus 4.
Google says there's nothing they can do, LG says send it to them and some time later they'll give me a quote to fix it. And, yes, the quote could be more than the price of a new phone.
LG has fixed enough cracked N5 screens, you'd think they'd know what it would cost by now...
So, should I risk it and send it back? Or should I keep living with it? The phone looks like hell but works fine.
If I send it back, it's probably just going to do this again, right?
Anyone with experience here? Thanks.

|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Craigtrain||12/17/13 4:10 PM|
The screen isn't faulty. If you drop or smash the phone, it WILL break. You don't see ANY phone manufacturers replacing broken screens for free.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Scott Bronson||12/17/13 4:58 PM|
Craigtrain, obviously. Problem is, I have never dropped or smashed my Nexus 5. I've treated it better than my Nexus 4. The years old N4 is fine, the month old N5 is cracking a little more each week.
If you're saying that this phone can't travel in a coat pocket then it probably should not be sold as a mobile phone.

I'm not at all surprised when I hear people complaining about their screen shattering after placing it gave down on a desk etc. The same thing happened from time to time with the back glass of the n4.
The reason this happens is because the temperature of the phone goes from hot to cold.
Actually Google made a small manufacturing adjustment to the later models of the N4 by adding 2 tiny lumps at the back in order to prevent direct contact with cold surfaces after the phone was running hot.
The phone shouldn't be sold with such poor build quality
|Cracked my Nexus 5||Mathew Haxton||12/24/13 11:56 AM|
Well here is the final conclusion. Best buy was able to replace it at no extra charge but took away my insurance plan and said I could buy it again if I wanted to. I do have my phone back and everything is working perfect for now but a little concerned about build quality in general. I have added a screen protector and case in hopes it helps. Thank you for the assistance and I wish you all luck with your phones.

I yelled at them for another 30 mins just to be told to ship it in for the techs to look at and send me a bill. Not sure what the finale cost will be. Not sure when I'd get my phone back. Because of the Sims card I can't put it back in old phone so I'd be without a phone for a bit which is not cool. I let them no I would no longer buy anything from Google are LG again.I should not be charged to fix screen when it is poor quality screen. Very unhappy with goggle & LG.

|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||RedAlchemist11||1/8/14 11:06 PM|
I really do wonder if it is first batch imperfection that causes crack. I have not dared to lay my Nexus 5 face down after reading the thread.
I am not trying to brag or anything but, I DID drop my 32gb Nexus 5 on Thanksgiving Day while exiting my car thanks to new sweatpants I received as gift. It was dark outside and I let out a cuss and got inside to inspect it. To my surprise (I DID read thread before this happened while searching around the web for camera bump vulnerability), mine did not have crack. However, I also have to add that the contact point was rear bottom right corner so I wonder if that was the saving grace.
I received my N5 on my birthday Nov 21s, 5 days prior to expected shipping date, and one day after I bought Nexus 7 32gb.

There are countless thousands of people who own this phone, and are using it without problems. There's always going to be a small number of people who end up breaking their device. Reading these posts might give you the impression that there's some sort of problem with the device, but there's not.

I get your point,but someone should explain this problem about leaving the phone face down,and finding a crack later :P..it does seem more common than it should be :(
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Johnney Paul||1/9/14 2:20 AM|
The Nexus 5 has a bad screen PERIOD!
Craigtrain nobody is interested in your cynical condescending opinions ... in fact your unsolicited advice is extremely irritating to say the least. I also wonder if you have no problems with your phone why are you trying to troll this thread and not go back to doing your development for GOOGLE!
Guys let us not give up ... please sign up to make our-self heard ... do spread the word on as many forums as you can ... twitter, facebook, your personal blog wherever and also get your friends to sign-up.
Please spread the word. We should not let GOOGLE and LG get away with it!
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Visakhan Nambiar||1/9/14 2:48 AM|
Exactly!It may be a few hundreds who get the problem,among many thousands who bought it.but this statistically doesn't seem right,because most complaints seem to have the exact same problem..leaving it face down(like mine),or some sort of daily wear and tear.I really love this phone,and if not for this cracked screen problem,I would have recommended a nexus 5 to all my friends.I mean,once we spend 146$ on repair,the total cost is kinda close to all other higher end phones.I don't want to believe this is some sort of a scam,but Google doesn't seem to offer any help :'(
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Craigtrain||1/9/14 3:04 AM|
There's only been a couple of people who claim their screen got broken from leaving the phone face down. I'm still not sure why anyone would place their device face down without being in a case. Then again, I'm not sure why anyone would use the phone without a case to begin with. Anyways, it doesn't matter. Broken screens aren't covered under the manufacturer's warranty, and that's just the way it is. I hope you all can at some point get your matters resolved.

Let Google or LG address this issue. This glass cracks like popcorn. My phone has 2 cracks already. It's only less than two months old. True it has had one or two falls but not serious. Had such falls in other types of phones and no cracks. The second crack came from nowhere.

this EXACT same thing happed to me, was watching a movie and fell asleep. the app wouldnt let the backight/screen turn off so phone was SUPER hot. its the only thing that makes sense/could have happend.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Joe Muzondo||2/2/14 2:55 PM|
My Nexus 5 just dropped like 3 feet and it was in a Spigen case but the corner shattered and cracked the screen. This is just awful,...3 feet and in a case and screen protector.
I still have an old Nexus One that had dropped way more times than that from far worse situations.

I also today cracked my screen yes it still works like new but I'm scared of it breaking more if any little bump or fall I'm gonna see if my phone company can do anything for me iv ordered 3 protection cases for it today just wish it didn't break I'm pretty sad about it. I'm glad it still works but what's the chances of it getting worse I spent too much on this phone and have no money for a new one nor to get it fixed so I don't know guess its gonna have to do until I decide to get a new phone when I do have the money I haven't even had the phone a month. Iv never experienced this with no phones in my life I'm not complaing nor saying its defective glass I'm just saying wish there was other options to getting it fixed to were people can afford it and like another comment stated it will be cheaper and more affordable in the future other than that I like this phone a lot so it does break my heart.

The new phones aren't any improvement. My wife just got her Nexus 5, she had it a few days in today it broke in her pocket. So if the hardware updates were something to secretly address this problem, they aren't working.
This is a design defect. LG is using a glass screen that isn't suited for the task. That Google and LG is doing nothing to address the issue is going to effect them in the long run. Ignoring a problem like this turns little issues into big issues.

Its funny how the guy with the level 3 thinks he knows it all, and he is defending a product that indeed has a huge flaw... my guess is that he works for Google.
I am a huge supporter of Google, just Google my name and you will see. However, I have to say that Google has made the best product ever with regards to the operating of the Nexus 5 but unfortunately the screen problem is an issue.
I went to a Google Conference a couple of days ago where all the Googlers had Nexus 5's and all 7 of the Googlers I spoke to had cracked screens on the Nexus 5's.
I am very careful with my phone and did not drop it but the screen cracked after I placed it face down on a table. I LOVE THE PHONE!!! Really I do, I even ordered another one. But it seems to have a huge issue I hope that Google will sort out.

Sure you did.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||prijil ps||3/8/14 2:16 AM|
Last day for my surprise I noted a small 'c' shaped side crack in my right side of screen. I neither did drop or keep keys along the phone.the GG3 is really not worth calling toughest.
Today morning I called up LG service center at bangalore.
They said a physical damage is not covered under warranty and the screen needs to be relaced with paid service.. The quote was 7450.00 INR.
I really feel bad with make quality Of such a brilliant product. The phone is very fragile and vey plasticky and with poor assembly inside.
I found many Customers in vein with nexus 5 cracked screen issues, Google must take some action against it.

What a miserable situation. Bought a $350 (plus $45 for shipping) nexus 5 in California, imported it to India (New Delhi), a gentle drop from the seat in the Metro and POW !!! The screen has a tree of cracks over it. Called up the LG service Center, total cost of repairs, a whooping INR 7200 ($120). Hats off to the Gorilla Glass (good for the Gorillas only). Never had any issue like this with my nexus 4 even after several drops.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Craigtrain||3/18/14 10:50 PM|
In 2012, our company bought a small detailing company in India, and a handful of us went out in Q2 of 2013 bearing gifts for the completion of a successful project. Something I noticed while out there was nobody in India seems to put a case of any kind on their devices. Phones in India are a big deal, like a status symbol. People like other people to see their phones, and I found it a bit unusual. Everyone likes the look and feel of a caseless phone, but unless you are sure that you'll never drop your device, going without a case isn't very smart. This particular phone we are using will break if you drop it, it should be obvious with the edge to edge glass, but we will continue to see people post angry words in this thread, complaining that their screen broke because they dropped their phone. Buy a case people, because if you drop the Nexus 5, the screen will break, and it's nobodies fault but your own.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Shivang Sharma||3/18/14 11:16 PM|
Well, I'm using a Red Nillkin Flip Cover for my Nexus 5 that I've imported from China. I'm least concerned about the people you saw in your visit to India using a cover or not, but I certainly do because I care for my phone. I'm not among the ones you saw at the time of your visit.
And getting back to the topic, the issue is not over using a cover or not, the issue is the delicacy of the phone. Many other phones have passed the REAL drop tests in daily life while the Nexus 5 can't handle even minor drops. This is the issue we are talking about on this group I guess.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Craigtrain||3/18/14 11:22 PM|
That flip cover you bought has zero top or bottom protection, I'm not surprised your screen broke honestly.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Shivang Sharma||3/19/14 12:33 AM|
Thanks for the Expert Information but ironically the screen broke from the side, where the case had thoroughly covered the phone. I've attached a picture of the same for your reference. The top and bottom of the phone are clean as a hound's tooth.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Clecle||3/31/14 7:04 PM|
I was filming the landscape while we were driving at 60 MPH.
The wind caught my nexus 5 off my hand.
It makes a nice and scary video! But the screen is obviously cracked.
I can't believe it still works!
I am buying a new one and I am wondering what to do with this one? Any ideas?
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Craigtrain||3/31/14 11:27 PM|
Not sure where you're from, but you could always eBay it. Personally, if it were mine and only the screen was trashed, I'd buy another screen and repair it myself.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Mumzel||4/27/14 8:16 AM|
I didn't leave my nexus or drop my nexus, it was in my hand and I was swiping through photos when I saw a crack appear from one corner to the centre of the opposite side.
The tablet was in a case and being used in portrait mode.
There are serious flaws with the glass and/or surround.
Called the retailer, no refund, called Google, no refund. Really unhappy with this brand.
I have been told it occurred due to temperature change, although I was hardly going from one extreme of temperature to the other,it was a sunny day, but I was using the device indoors.
|Re: Cracked my Nexus 5||Craigtrain||4/27/14 12:49 PM|
This is the Nexus 5 sub-forum, not the Nexus 7. Sorry to hear about your tablet though.
