No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? illmatic683 11/6/13 2:00 PM
Hello,

This afternoon, in the comment section, the reply and the thumbs up/down button is no longer there.... something about Google /+, My account is linked with the account. Am I the only one with this issue????

Please advice.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? epontius 11/6/13 2:12 PM
What does it say specifically?
YouTube is in the process of rolling out G+ comments across YouTube.
Do you see any comments or buttons like "Top Comments"
Do you have have box to make a comment?

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? LEOXD 11/6/13 2:12 PM
The rollout didn't reach me yet, but you can try to clear cache and delete cookies.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? illmatic683 11/6/13 3:21 PM
Yes, I see "top comments" .... at the top.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? epontius 11/6/13 3:33 PM
Here's the scoop... I wasn't aware of this before. Since this is a new commenting system, you will see be able to see old comments, but won't be able to reply to them. Hence why you no longer see those buttons for old comments on the video.
Start a new comment...
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? veganath 11/6/13 4:05 PM
Another intrusive & pathetic change that leaves users with less functionality & assumes we ALL want to be completely integrated i.e. all accounts under ONE ID
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? veganath 11/6/13 4:08 PM
You don't find this most recent change a disturbing trend of reduced functionality?
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? epontius 11/6/13 4:12 PM
It's better in a lot of ways. You can have a private discussion on a video now.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Gaben Newell 11/6/13 4:20 PM
I guess that's good. I dont have to read through some adventures of 100+ replies. But like the other guy said, another bullshit change that does no real help.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? anmoose 11/6/13 4:23 PM
Fucking assholes! They've pulled it on me. I can't even READ comments on my own videos, because the goddamn "Changes to YouTube comments" overlay is right square on top of them! The Google twats must be really happy with themselves now.

Jerks.....
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? epontius 11/6/13 4:25 PM
It will make it easier on the management side of things too... as you can ban comments with certain words and people from commenting on your channel and videos. You can also whitelist circles of people or individuals.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? O.S.K. 11/6/13 4:27 PM
What is this new stuff? I don't even use google plus, I don't even know if I have google plus...

This is totally uncalled for... I don't even know how to check google plus.. Why? Why would youtube do this... So now I have to click 4-5 buttons just to see a comment... I'm a youtuber not a Google+er...

Is there a way I can make it all go back to the way it was???

I can't even comment anymore, will this nonsense go away??

The comments won't even show up for me.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? epontius 11/6/13 4:49 PM
Temporary in that after 14 days you won't have the option of unlinking anymore.
Since G+ is now a requirement for commenting, you'll need to link it to a page or profile if you want to comment.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? ihdc1 11/6/13 4:54 PM
Is there a way to get around this?
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? nousernamehere 11/6/13 4:55 PM
It won't show up on anything. Not on video has comments, and not one channel has comments.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? ytKeane 11/6/13 5:07 PM
You can still send PMs. Go to their channel page and on the "About" tab there's a send message button. Or you can go to your Inbox by visiting youtube.com/my_videos or youtube.com/inbox.

Thanks epontius for explaining that comments made before the new system can't be replied to now. They can't get a thumbs up or down, either.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? CJ Thorne 11/6/13 5:13 PM
If you need to have a private discussion, you can use PMs. There was no need to bring private discussions to video comments.

Comments aren't showing up for me at all on any video. Fuck YouTube and Fuck Google+! I hate it. I only made this to change my username.

Google, quit fucking around and changing shit. You'd think after like 5 years you would have learned that?

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Anubis1SS 11/6/13 5:19 PM
Why is Google forcing everyone on YouTube to get a social media platform that many didn't want in the first place?

Still, for convenience's sake, is there anyway I can at least set "newest first" on permanent instead of the "top comments" function? I've looked through the mess of options and can't find anything that relates to it on my settings panels.

You could have a private discussion in personal messages. Having a discussion shown to everyone on a video where anyone can jump into is basically the exact opposite of "private".

Yes, I know. At least I found out about it before the flaming bastards pulled it on me at 3 AM. And so now that I've wasted a fucking hour of my evening switching one of my test channels, carefully trying to avoid letting Google destroy it in front of my eyes, I see the new comments and they're absofrickinglutely HORRIBLE, with nothing but an entire page of totally lame "top comments," no visible option for simple threaded discussions, and no rhyme or reason whatever, and you can't even reply to a comment that was made yesterday????!!!!! Actually, there are a lot of people that don't allow random PMs.

Oh, and here's a thought. Maybe... just maybe, they could have made an intelligent design decision and not crippled their comments system.
Oh, and it doesn't apply to old comments really. Some old comments I can reply to just fine, others I can not. I feel there's more something buggy going on.

If we wanted to have private discussions on a video, we could always send private messages using the Youtube messaging inbox system. We don't need G+ or a new commenting system for that.

it's a move from google, the same happens to me but in one video i found a woman which i was able to reply and thumbs up/down, but she was the only one, all the other comments didn't show the buttons, it's obviously a move from google to FORCE US link our youtube accounts with their STUPID google accounts

i've been having other problems as well, they dont stop asking me to change my username i dont know what part of NO doesnt fit in their stupid heads, and my profile pic changes to the old one, to the last one, to the google+ one, to no profile pic!! it's a mess they are idiots if you are going to force us anyway with your smooth move at least you should do it fast so the problem will be for a short time, how much will i have to wait to reply someone's comments? till everyone notices there are no buttons and notice the only way is by linking the accounts?

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Mr Rid 11/7/13 1:03 AM
Ok, I get it now.  No one can ever reply, or like/dislike any comments that were posted before Google switched to a new commenting system.  Now, you can only reply, or like/dislike on comments that are posted after the changeover.

This means that millions of discussions were suddenly ended by Google, since you cant continue replying to anyone you were in mid-correspondence with, unless you private message them, although that is not the same thing, and most people wont realize what happened for awhile, and will assume the other person just stopped commenting.  This will piss a lot of people off, but it's a free service, so 'tough.'

Google REALLY should have an explanation auto-pop up for everyone who logs in after the change, so they understand.  It seems deranged to leave the situation so ridiculously confusing.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? mistergonzom 11/7/13 2:46 AM
just found out that if have adblock plus enabled in youtube you wont be able to see the comments
so in order to see them you have to disable it for that site
hope it helps

No offense dude, but WHO in the bloody hell wants to have a private discussion, in the comment section, of a public video?  If you wanna have a private discussion as you say, that's what PM's, are for. OR, privating your video's.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Choice NOT A REQUIREMENT 11/7/13 2:57 AM
I use adblock plus, I disabled it. I can view comments. Aslong as you have a Google+ account that isn't tied to your Youtube account-- meaning you can separate the two, you can still comment/reply, etc.

I am doing it now. My Youtube name is still the same without the annoying Google+ blue box at the top right and two sets of settings. It's still the same.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? mistergonzom 11/7/13 3:03 AM

but the only thing now is that we'll have those annoying commercials everytime
hope that the adblock plus guys come up with an update

To explain:  comments made before the new system went live are classed as legacy comments and do not have reply/vote buttons.  Similarly, for reasons I do not know, comments made since the system went live but with a mobile app etc act as though they were legacy comments also.  :(

Me too... annoying as I am being reviewed for a social media award nomination and one of the criteria is how much you engage with your audience! It will seem that I don't engage at all if I have to reply to comments via a PM!!! There must be a way of publicly replying? Am I missing something here or is this 'update' really that frustrating?
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Holt2K 11/7/13 3:39 AM
I've set everything up as Google asked me to.

I can reply to comments, but I cannot create new ones. I try to type in the comment box, but no letters appear as I type. None whatsoever. I unplugged my keyboard; plugged it back in, turned off AdBlock, turned it back on. Nothing. I can access the comment box, but it refuses to acknowledge my typing.

I suppose they won't listen to all the people who tell them this latest change is a joke. They have been flogging the Google+ horse for a while now. Every single change they have made to Youtube has been about hiding any social functions. Every change means it takes at least an extra click to get to your channel comments or video comments, yet they stick this Google+ crap right on your front page. My Email inbox is filling up with Google+ crap. I have never even SEEN my Google+ page, and I will never use it.
Do Google even understand that most of the people who use Youtube only come here to continue a public argument they are having on a video? Most of the users come here to openly debate stuff in the videos. Now, I know those people don't tend to click the ads, and so are worthless to Google, but it's going to get awfully empty in here, pretty soon.

PM's show up in your YouTube inbox. Click your avatar, click Video Manager and then inbox.
Comment notifications pop up on the G+ notification bell.

Click the reply button on the comment. It will add a +account name to the message. It then shows the replies in order underneath the comment.

Thank you, I see that in your informative post above. However, is there any way to properly reply to a comment that exists under the old-system now, so that the new-system comment is 'attached' to that comment, in a chronological manner, so that others know you are responding to that old-system comment?

No, sorry. You can't reply to the old comments. Once the new comments start getting used, you can reply to new comments in the new system.

You might share with us what's good about it?? Did you manage to find (does it even exist) REPLY button.? Where? How?
Or you dont really care about it? Well I do. Regarding spams - you had option to deal with it before as well so nothing new here.
Now they give you option to REVIEW possible spams. But ONLY review! You can not take any action - you can not save some of those comments suggested as spam even if they are not spam. Pfff ... frustrating. Useless.

That's not the issue people have with your changes. It's the REQUIREMENT to link the youtube account to a G+ profile. Why not leave YT alone?

G+ is too confusing for the most people and they use a MUCH better product called Facebook.

I went to reply to a comment posted via G+ in the new way and I am told I do not have permission to comment (on my own video as a reply to a 'linked' comment)... And as an encore the comment is now not showing on YT, it only appears on the G+ profile of the person who commented! This is getting silly... another PM sent and petition signed. Sorry Google but this new system is not really working for us!

I just tried this tagging type thing with someone who commented in the new way via their G+ profile last night (so I should see that comment and be able to simply reply you would think - sorry, still ranting about that one). However this person's G+ profile does not come up as choice... lots of other people with the same name but none are the one I want! Sigh... the saga continues!
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? InedibleHulk 11/8/13 3:56 AM
Google runs on selling marketing info. It's worked extremely well for them. If companies will pay millions to know what nameless people are doing online, they'll pay even more to know names, locations, relationships, conversations, idols, opinions, compulsions, phobias, etc.

You can tell a lot about what someone will buy from what they watch and how they respond. Crazy to think how much Google will tell once the glasses catch on.

Anyway, it's not a REQUIREMENT. You're free to not comment, the same as you're free to not buy a new car or bottle of sweet, cold RC Cola. And you're free to make the exact comment elsewhere. Or even right here on the help forum (link to the video, so you don't sound crazy, though).

Personally, I feel Nannerpuss doesn't get the mainstream recognition he deserves. WAKE UP to breakfast, people! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kK6F7t-x6E

1. So how do we actually reply to comments made before the new system rolled out?
2. Why can't I review any comment either? Whenever I click the button to confirm changes nothing happens.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? epontius 11/8/13 6:23 AM
You don't. You need to start a new comment. If that the person that left that old comment has a G+ account, you maybe able to type +account name. As you start to type the name, G+ will show you names that match from your circles, from the context of the post, from the whole G+ system. If they aren't in G+ now, and they sign up with the same name later the system should notify them of the comment.
It will take a little while for everything to settle as everyone transitions to using the new comments.

Old comments can't be voted on. New comments, only the upvote will work. I've been told that it is the same as clicking +1 on a G+ post. downvoting won't do anything since there is not an -1 option in G+. I would expect that soon those thumbs will be replaced by a single +1 button.
I think over the years that there has been a lot of complaints that downvoting was used as a form of harassment or was used to silence an unpopular opinion and didn't necessarily reflect on the quality of the actual comment.
If someone in the comments is being rowdy and disruptive, you can now Mute them. Once muted you won't see comments from that person.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? TheTaoOfKastro 11/8/13 11:39 AM
Here's the thing though:

Google knows it doesn't have to change anything to be beneficial to the user. Why? Because unless there is a mass exodus of users from the site (which there won't be), they'll know people just bent over, lubed up, and took it.

You want to make a statement, one that they'll listen to? Get some big-name partners leave Youtube, and delete your account in protest if they don't fix the change by Monday.

The ONLY way Youtube will learn is there is a drastic affect on their traffic and ability to make money. That is the ONLY thing they care about. Money. That's it. Period. If they're making money from you, it doesn't matter how pissed you get at them.

I know people don't want to, but it really is the only method of making Youtube listen. You'll have to lose your account, and refuse to sign back up. Big-name Youtubers will have to do the same. Once a few million people stop using the site altogether, there might be just enough of an impact to make Google reconsider.

Until then, all you can really do is keep a bottle of lube nearby because they're going to fuck you in the ass again real soon since they know they can get away with it.

This is a message by Madrasi I have found on an other thread. I think this is interresting so I share it here.

Also, make sure to see this blog post about the the comments from the Google+ drones on that video:

I am observing the same phenomenon on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuIRY5KFEU0

This proves that Google+ is deciding for us which comments they want us to see, based on which commenters have the most Google+ seniority (including Google employees and other people paid to promote it). Why would anyone that it's a good idea for Google to decide for us which comments we see, rather than letting the community decide?

Interresting isn't it ? Food for thougth.

To spice the things up here some Youtubers' thoughts Videos. Look at the top comments and make your own opinion.

As for me I thinks is either big Trolls or Google Employes .... and for me Googles Employes are Trolls.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Tomas idunno 11/10/13 4:04 PM
That is indeed very interesting and I see the same on my side here.. It is hard to even find a negative comment on google+ among the top comments, but yet this video only has 590 dislikes?? This entirely proves that google is actually censoring other peoples channels just to hide negative comments about google+.

They really have turned into the evil entity they promised to never become. I wonder if this is even legal.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Tomas idunno 11/10/13 4:15 PM
I guess this also explains why I can no longer thumb up comments or reply.. They probably disabled that feature on my account on purpose so that the likes of me cant vote up anti google+ comments or reply to the pro google+ comments.

I had until now been open minded about this all being just a strange bug, but when they sink this low i am afraid they are capable of being so evil.

The top comment on the video in the article is a negative one. 12 replies and 109 up votes.
9 out of 10 of the video links Yann posted have negative top comments.

Maybe take a look at rest of the top comments then?? We were talking about the majority of comments that show up on top/front page by default.
It makes no sense that majority of comments should be postiive about google+ on a video that has thousands of likes and very few dislikes.

Probably because majority of people who are highly critical of the G+ integration refuse to link their channels to G+ and therefore can't comment. They can still "like" a video without G+.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? madrasi 11/10/13 4:53 PM
epontius, what video are you even talking about?

Did you even view this link?

You know full well that Google is ranking comments higher based on much Google+ seniority they have (i.e., how old their Google+ accounts are and how many people are in their "circles"). Also based on whether the comment is posted via Google+ or via YouTube. As a result, because only 1% of the YouTube users actually like or use Google+ in this way, only this 1% of users are being featured as top comments, and they are all trashing YouTubers.

It's not a conspiracy, it's a fact.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Tomas idunno 11/10/13 4:53 PM
What has that to do with the default behaviour of the comment system?
How is it logical that video with less than 600 dislikes have 90% pro google+ comments showing on front page/at top. When I say top i dont mean just thumbs up, but how they show. The negative comments will mostly only be shown if you expand the comments or sort them differently.
How can you not think this is a bit fishy???
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? madrasi 11/10/13 4:54 PM
Just look at this video, epontius. Every single comment is is from a Google+ drone slamming the uploader:

Yet if you sort by time or look at the likes vs. dislikes, you will see that these "top comments" are a very vocal minority.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Tomas idunno 11/10/13 4:55 PM

It is just that it is mostly only positive ones that show by default.

Exactly!
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? madrasi 11/10/13 4:59 PM
That is part of it. But you have to admit that Google is ranking these comments (now called "posts" or something) based on whether the "posts"  are broadcast via Google+, and also based on how many people the commenter has in their Google+ "circles." As a result, the people with the most Google+ seniority now have the biggest soapbox on YouTube. Ironic, isn't it?
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? madrasi 11/10/13 5:11 PM
It's baffling that epontius won't admit the basis facts: that Google+ self-promotes Google+ on YouTube. It's an undeniable fact that the system is set up this way.

Earlier today, on that Emma Blackery video, I saw a post by this guy criticizing Emma.

He had 66 likes on his comment. He also insulted YouTubers and said we are all worthless trolls. And most importantly, he admitted that he is a Google employee.

The guy has only one YouTube subscriber, and only two videos, each with less than 50 views. Unless he has other channels, how is he even qualified to talk about the tradeoffs of the new comment system on YouTube?

And how on earth did he get 66 likes on that comment? They must have come from Google+ and from his fellow Google employees, because they sure as hell didn't come from the people who were on the video, almost all of whom agree with its message ("Fuck you Google+").
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? madrasi 11/10/13 5:15 PM

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? epontius 11/10/13 5:29 PM
No shit. That was the 1 video out of the 10 links that Yann referred to that did not have a top comment critical of G+. The other 9/10 all had top comments that were negative.
If no one replies or rates the comment it won't be bubbled up.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? madrasi 11/10/13 5:30 PM
He definitely defends Google+ at all cost and won't admit the negatives about it. I know that Top Contributors aren't paid money, but they are often given freebies from Google, like laptops.

What I really want to know is, how exactly is Google counting "points" from other users (or whatever they are called in Google+) as thumbs up on YouTube. Because it's clear to me that all the Google+ drones attacking YouTubers and high-fiving each other are not regular YouTube users, and are not clicking on the thumbs up buttons on the comments within YouTube. The "thumbs ups" on comments are coming from outside YouTube, and yet are being counted inside YouTube. Very strange indeed.

That is all you have to say? There were other top comments promoting Google+ on some of those other videos, but the two videos uploaded by women all have a massive amount of self-promoting Google+ comments.

What about all the other points we have made in this thread about how Google+ is designed to be self-promoting on YouTube?

It also seems as if, for some reason, the Google+ drones are targeting videos uploaded by women.

I agree with what this post says:

This has been part of G+’s problem from the beginning, it’s used by a very small segment of mostly male, professional, egotistical, entitled people who can’t believe anyone would ever /not/ use Google+ because it’s so awesome…except when you do go use it, they get up in your face for “using it wrong.”

Kind of like yourself, I might add.

If no one replies or rates the comment it won't be bubbled up.

Interesting. So is that how all these thumbs up work now on YouTube? A reply from someone counts as a thumbs up (or what you refer to as "bubbling up")? Well, that helps explain another part of why these pro-Google+ comments are becoming "top comments."
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Tomas idunno 11/10/13 5:48 PM

Almost 1200 people have him in their circles. This comment would have gone to all of them. Comments to this post on G+ would have also appeared on the video.

I like how it is google that decides what comments you care about.. I dont give a shit about who is a so called popular personality.
It is really unfair and stupid how those with most google+ friends should count more than a comment from a another person.
This is just a way for them to fool naive people into adding as many "friends" as possible so that their comments are "worth more".

What should matter is the message, not how many fake friends you got.

Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? madrasi 11/10/13 6:33 PM

Hmmmm....popular personalities? That could mean just about anything. It does allow Google to promote certain messages by certain authors, independent of what the community really wants.

As far as I am concerned, all comments are equal, at least when they first come in. If, when reviewing comments on my videos, I find one that is racist or spam, then I take care of the comment. But I want all comments to get a fair shot at becoming top comment based on their own merit, not based on whether they were written by someone who has a lot of Google+ followers.

The ironic thing is that because I don't have a Google+ account, I now cannot delete true spam and hate speech that comes onto my videos, and also I can't unmark as spam old comments that were suddenly, retroactively, and falsely auto-flagged as spam as soon as the new switch occurred. Comments from months ago are now marked as spam and therefore hidden from view, and there is nothing I can do about it.

Thanks for helping explain this. That's what I mean when I say the system is fucked up. If someone has a lot of people in their Google+ "circles," and if they get responses to something they post regarding a YouTube video, then their comment is automatically, artificially, given "thumbs ups" WITHIN YOUTUBE. It's insulting to non-Google+ users to see activity from outside YouTube count as activity inside YouTube.

I think the fact that this is happening only drives home the point that very few people are actively using Google+, even after the forced integration. If there were more people jointly using Google+ and YouTube, then the system would have returned to some sense of normalcy or balance, with comments becoming top-rated based on the merit of the comment, rather than based on the popularity of the commenter.

Ultimately, Google doesn't even care whether YouTube users are actively sharing or commenting on videos with a Google+ account. What really matters to Google is that you just establish a Google+ account. The reason is simple: Google wants to silently track your preferences and interests. And that is the real story behind the forced Google+ integration on YouTube.

These are bugs that have already been reported. The G+ comment system has a separate pending/spam review interface that show you and help you manage these pending and spam comments. The funny thing of course is that since the old system did not have a good way of showing just pending and/or spam comments, people are starting to find comments that were marked as spam (rightly or wrongly) or pending for months even years. They didn't even know they existed because you didn't have a good way of locating them in the hundreds or thousands of comments one might have on a video.

Ok... the video has 10k comments. I paged through about 20+ pages of the comments. Out of those 20 or so pages, only one had a direct reply. The highest number of likes in those pages of comments was 4.

So where in that does the logic break (even your own logic) that any of those would have more value than a comment with more than 2 direct replies and more than 4 likes? The top somewhat G+ positive comment has 9 replies and 4 likes? All 9 of those comments seem to be a negative response to the original commentors remarks. It's a top comment because it is being actively discussed...negative or positive.

How's that? What about this new system encourages censorship? Top comments in the old system were entirely based on likes, comments with too many dislikes were completely hidden from view. Try to express your counter opinion to a video supporting the other side... soon your comment will be buried and hidden from view or marked is spam. How is that not censorship?
In this new system there are no dislikes, no ability for one to spam mark a comment. Your reply to a video has just as much merit as anyone else's. Your negative reply to a positive top comment will still be shown as a reply.
Comments with no replies and no likes are ordered lower. Don't want to hear some disruptive drivel from someone being an ass in the comments or following an opinion you don't, you can choose to mute them... You will no longer see comments from them on that video...but everyone else will as long as they also don't mute them. These are similar controls that message boards have had for many years and were sorely lacking from the old comment system and was probably one of the top feature requests from users...better comment control.

From what I can tell, the mere fact that someone posts a comment on Google+ automatically gives that comment an edge, even before anyone on Google+ responds to it. That explains why every single Google+ comment rises to the top on the two anti-Google+ videos uploaded by women we have been talking about. And check this out: on the most popular video against Google+ (Emma Blackery's song), only 0.13% of the comments were posted via Google+, and yet virtually all of them were chosen by Google as "top comments."

If you were one of the 3 million followers that had his page in your circles, that comment may pop up to the top regardless... as that comment may be of interest to you because you follow him.

Comments from "popular" Googleplus accounts will rise to the top for everyone, no matter what. The more "popular" voices are being given the largest platform on YouTube. This is an end to YouTube's former egalitarian days.

But there is a balance, even the guy with 1200 circlers dropped out of the top comments on the video he commented on... replaced by other more replied and higher rated comments. So the system seems to be balancing itself depending on what the viewers want.

You are really reaching. That comment was a top comment for many hours on a video that had hundreds of thousands of views. The system is not at all balanced, because Google is giving the loudest voice on YouTube to the 0.13% of users who use Google+.

There are now even clever trolls taking advantage of exactly that fact. Case in point: https://plus.google.com/+CharlieEllingson/posts

I agree it wasn't exactly easy before, but I did diligently review comments on my videos using the all comments tab, and unflag the non-spam and remove the true spam. Now I can no longer do that, because Google forces me to have a Google+ account, which I refuse to do. In the meantime, I am joining the many YouTubers who have disabled comments on their videos until this fiasco is resolved and Google+ goes back to being optional.

Well, epontius, our replies don't have "just as much merit as anyone else's."

Google has simply added another element by which some comments will be given preference: "Comments with no replies and no likes are ordered lower."

In the past, a couple "top comments" were more visible, but the rest remained on equal turf... whether or not anyone had responded.

The community as a whole is deciding it.
Show me one Top comment from Google+ or anywhere else that does not have more likes and replies that comments that are not top comments. Can you find a top comment that has only one reply and only one like that is positive of G+ that outranks, a negative comment with 12 likes and 22 replies?
The more likes and comments a reply gets the higher up it will rank. As other comments get more replies and likes than the current top comments, those top comments will lose ranking. Negatives are practically pointless as the presence or absence of likes can show the weight of a comment. How many times have you seen comments in the old system disliked out of existence even though the comment was an honest opinion but contrary to the common viewpoint? The dislike and spam buttons have done nothing but promote censorship of unpopular opinions.
And yes..Google+ users are more likely to reply since people who refuse to link can't comment at all. People who have been using G+ for 2 years and have had their channels linked for months already know how commenting and +1 (as G+ calls likes) works...so yes, they have a leg up on those who refuse to link or who waited until forced to link. Their followers will see posts and comments from them...similar to a channel's subscribers.
Had you linked your account and commented, your comments would also be seen, liked and replied to and weighted as well.

So now it is bad that more comments with higher likes and replies are seen at the top, not just the two that are the highest ranked? So even though your comment might have had 25 likes, it won't ever be seen because the top two comments have 75 and 50 likes and your comment is 4 pages of comments back...where no one will see it.

The "mark as spam" link was one of the most abused functions in the old comment system. I always expanded those comments out of curiosity, and found many that contributed to the discussion but had been hidden because they'd gone against the grain. I'm elated that it's a thing of the past.

On the other hand, I'm still surprised (and disappointed) that Google removed the ability to reply to comments that were posted before these changes. Those who weren't actively checking their accounts in the past few days are permanently barred from responding to those comments on their videos.

It's a shame. :/

I looked for an example that meets your criteria and was not able to find one. But is it possible that the likes themselves are auto-generated by sheer virtue of the user's "popularity" on Google+? Google itself uses the word "popular personalities" to explain which comments will be ranked at the top.

Remember the old days when comments that were downvoted would still show up? I really miss that. There were some comments that had hundreds of thumbs down but the comments were still visible. There is no reason to completely hide these comments, and I never understood why YouTube changed it. The mere fact that a comment got so many downvotes was punishment enough to the user.

I do agree with you that the "mark as spam" button is often abused, and it served little purpose, because the true spambots were almost never terminated as a result of comments being flagged.

I think that remains to be seen. I would expect that a comment with lots of replies and lots of likes or just a lot of likes will out rank a reply from a troll with lots of replies but no likes.

But is it possible that the likes themselves are auto-generated by sheer virtue of the user's "popularity" on Google+?

I doubt that anything is auto-generated... Active G+ users are more likely to comment and +1 posts from people they follow... just the same as people on YouTube who subscribe to channels are more likely to comment and rate videos from their subscriptions. It's also far easier to follow and keep up to date on people you follow on G+ because of the way it is built to control noise....looking at specific circles when you only want to see posts from certain groups or interest. Say you are in the mood for Photography, you could choose to look at only posts from those in your Photography circle, so an easier way to just get a subset of information rather than weeding through a bunch of other stuff. It would be similar to grouping channels you are subscribed to on YouTube...but in a broader fashion.

Same goes for the transmitting side as well... meaning if you have a channel about photography and you have a handful of very active users that have subscribed to you and commented for years on your videos, you can add them to a specific circle so you can communicate with them directly, share special "vip members only" type videos with them and so on.

AGREED. Actually it doesn't assume -> we <- want anything. It is a marketing advantage for the "don't do evil" Google empire and anyone buying into their marketing options. It is an attempt to profile every user of the internet and customise advertisements and marketing based on information in the database (e.g. another facebook). We must stay vigilant users and remember at all times that services like these are not free so no matter how they try to pitch changes they are not in the first-hand rolled out for the end user and it still boils down to tyranny over our services. I hope one day Google will engulf itself in its greed and collapse. It is time for a fresh idea. Google only offers half-solutions anyway. Nothing every functions for any length of time and services are riddled with errors and catches. Tell me, why they have their hands in every aspect of internet life? I'll tell you. Money. They have to control e-mail, browsing, scheduling, community, maps to sustain themselves and that lush palace they've built around themselves. This is an empire which is siphoning every useful service online (not to make it better and not because they have better ideas instore, rather to sweep up users and capitalise on their usage of a service) and I hope it burns to the ground, especially after this last stunt with YouTube. It is completely unusable now and for the first time in ages I consider deactivating my YT account completely. I DO NOT WANT MY INFORMATION SHARED

For the longest time, I have had a problem with the comment sections under videos.  This is because of what I "perceive" as trolls and jerks posting stuff that shouldn't be said in polite society.  A lot of these jerks just torment other people for the sheer joy of hurting them.  I concluded that most of them were folks with more time on their hands than brains in their head.  Some of them were just plain stalkers who would threaten women and most of the victims would come to this group to complain.  Some were really frightened.  No matter what they did, they could not avoid these people.  You could block them, you could disable comments below your videos, you could not allow a "rating" of thumbs up or down,  You could try anything and the bullies, stalkers and trolls would fine a way to get at you.   Even the bullies would come here and complain when their shit got exposed.  They thought they were safe behind their computer screens and keyboards and would never be discovered.  The more people complained or tried to avoid them, the worse it got for the victims.  YouTube or Google could do nothing because if they took the bullies channels down, they would just set up another under a fake name and continue.  There were times that some of the women were really frightened for their safety because they had no idea if these jerks knew where they lived or not.  The women who were just plain angry were called dykes, queers, sluts and every thing else but a child of God.  Most of the bullies were vicious and unrelenting.  Much like middle schoolers with no parental supervision.  Makes me wonder if that's ALL they are.   Clueless kids.  Some would hire bots to attack their competitors.  Then cry when someone accused them of using bots to inflate their own views.

Along came Google to the rescue.  They decided to make the comment sections safe for everyone.  How??  By devising a way that made EVERYONE accountable for their crap.  There is no possibility for the bullies to hide anymore.  Now, they are known for who they are and everyone in the world can see them.

It's called Google +.  Notice how the only ones complaining are the ones who can't bully from behind their monitors any more???     I think that for once, maybe, just maybe, the comment section on YouTube will no longer be the internet joke of a lifetime.  It will now be mostly safe for everyone to read the comments and maybe they will be able to leave a comment without someone jumping in and calling them names and making threats.

Is it possible that Youtube might just become all it ever wanted to be??

My issue is that there is no "reply" button for other Google+ comments. This is not the same as not being able to reply to pre-Google+ comments. I cannot reply to ANY of the new comments.

Just wow... First nothing has changed and people still troll like before.
Look at the comments of some of the females who posted anti google+ videos, and you will see that all the pro google+ drones attack this woman personally in all kinds of insulting ways just for expressing her opinion.
And guess what?? Even though these comments were a small minority, they were all showing on the front page as TOP COMMENTS thanks to the new way the comment system works. The video had 7000+ likes and only 590 or so dislikes, but yet you had all these troll comments showing as top comments, which is something that would never have happened with old system.

And about we being so called bullies or trolls... you have no fucking idea.
If you actually spent a few minutes reading the posts and threads here you will see that most of us already have google+, but cannot use it because of bugs that affect random people. I have never ever attacked people like you describe on youtube, but yet you call me a troll just because I complain about not being able to reply or vote people up.
How can you defend the fact that I cannot reply to a SINGLE comment on ANY video???
I cannot even reply to people who comment on my OWN CHANNEL/VIDEOS or thumb them up and yet you call me a troll??? Stop acting like a asshole.

that is just it - there are vile trolls that do need shooting in the head, but my point is i like "liking" 90s tunes which dont reek of bastardised commercial EDM, i love getting into debates and banter about how england hate the americans calling football "soccer" and how we could have won the war without uncle sam coming to help out... I say all of this in jest by the way - but that is what Youtube has been for the last decade and it is now that the bigwigs at google have realized that thair g+ will only compete with facebook if users are forced to use it.  Which is complete bullshit.  Chances are g+ will do what facebook did to myspace eventually but being forced to do something will not sit well with your average consumer.

Lmao! I absoultely LOVE how in-denial some people are about the comment section, and anyone who complains about it (even though the complaints are legit) are simple mindless trolls, who live in the basement. I don't know if you fools have tooken notice or not...but the comment section has VISABLY become worst! Just within this past WEEK, I've been leaving video's with hardly any comments to do with the video itself. People (or trolls) now only post Ascii art of penises, vaginas, and hell...a site lead to scare the living BEJESUS out of us!

Oh no, the trolls, are in DEFINTE control! Nope, they haven't posted any sites that lead to viruses or anything, at all. So, people shouldn't be crying, and being upset! People shouldn't complain when they've invested many YEARS into their youtube channels, to only be kicked to the side if we don't wanna be apart of Google's failed ass "social networking" site! /Sarcasm! Oh yea, let's tack on the got damn stupidity of big names. People who've gotten SO big, that responding to any huge amount of comments, is a no, no! Or the now famous line I've heard... "I don't care, and it doesn't effect me at all!" Well, maybe it doesn't, effect YOU, because you don't respond to comments at all, or you rarely do (98%). OR, that you just made a youtube channel, and ALL you do is post comments, likes, and dislikes to people pages.
You're NOT a content poster! Honestly, you Google d-ridders need to give this hippy "Google is great!" speech a fucking rest, because we're not as stupid as we may seem. We KNOW bullshit, when we see it. And this my friend....IS BULLSHIT, AND NO ONE SHOULD BE FORCED INTO A SERVICE THEY DON'T WANT! I don't care HOW many bullshit ass excuses you try to make for it, it's WRONG! Also, also let's not forget the people who say, "If you don't like it, then leave!" again, if you DON'T upload content, just made your YT channel, haven't invested much into it, then you have NO fucking right to tell us to just "roll over and take it, and if you can't take it? Then LEAVE" fuck, you to hell!

Oh yea, one last thing, I HIGHLY DOUBT, that if the original owners of YT still owned YT, we'd ever see changes as retarded as the ones Google have made thus far! Psshh.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? brownsugarcandie2007 11/13/13 4:21 AM

I've been seeing comments like this from shills, a LOT lately! ANYONE who complains about the new changes EVEN in the slightest? Is just being brushed off as trolls. Hell, even the idiot BEHIND the changes who have been getting colorful messages on his G+ page, have brushed people off as trolls whenever they complained. A legit complaint, IS a complaint you wanna hear. There's NO ONE complaining for the sake of complaining! We clearly have a MASS amount of evidence to back up what the fuck we're complaining about. If anyone is the troll, it's GOOGLE THEMSELES, AS WELL AS these mindless ass shills, that follow. Google clearly have these people under some type of mind control, because 98% of the community are outraged about these ridiculous ass changes!

People (or trolls) now only post Ascii art of penises, vaginas, and hell...a site lead to scare the living BEJESUS out of us!

Just curious. Whose fault is that? Practically since YouTube began, people were complaining that character limits in comments restricted their ability to discuss without the need for breaking their single thought up into multiple 500 character disjointed parts. People have complained about the inability to post links to sources, videos, etc.. in comments. All along YouTube has been saying that those limits have been in place to prevent abuse...still people complained and ranted that YouTube was hindering their ability. Now YouTube lifts those restrictions and the first thing that happens...YouTube users abuse it. Now everyone wants those restrictions back.
Have your opinions about G+ all you want, but up until Nov 6th, I had never seen pages of ascii art, links to porn and spam, links to shocking videos, etc... in my G+ stream, and yet people who have been using G+ for the past 2 years have had the same lack of restrictions.
This abuse by fellow YouTubers gives everyone on YouTube a bad image and gives the impression that YouTube is populated by immature and irresponsible 12 year olds.

As the owner of a channel and the reader of comments, you have control over who can be seen on your video's comments by banning unruly disruptive people from the channel and the ability to mute those you don't wish to ever see their comments. There is a certain amount of responsibility you have to take yourself to get the best experience for you...YouTube can't protect you from everything.
That being said, I think there does have to be a balance. I've already suggested trying to implement a channel option in which comments with URLs are held for approval (similar to the old option of video responses requiring approval). Perhaps more options in the channel comment management to restrict some privileges by default and allowing a defined subset of individuals, circles, etc... have no restrictions (similar to what many message boards do for trusted members).

Since G+ comments are not going away and you are going to have to work with it if you intend on commenting, now is the time to start suggesting ways of improving the new comment system to try and get an experience that works for you.

That is kick-ass hard reading epontius.  But so true.  More's the pity.  I really, really dislike this change and I dislike what it is doing to YouTubers.  It is like we are all candidates for anger management classes all of a sudden.

Still-  I wish it were not so, that everyone would just be intelligent and not give the impression that making it bad for ourselves will make Google reconsider.  To me it is akin to pooping in your own nest- no intelligent creature does that.

That could work.  But then again- it also leads to more anger.  I have always set my videos on the TLFU channel to not be votable because they are not meant to be popular or invite anything but discourse on How To and yet- with the changes I suddenly find myself having to justify my lack of desire to play the popularity game.  You cannot win with the diversity of society on YouTube.  IS there such an animal as a "trusted member" anymore, now that YouTube is the megalith it is?

Since G+ comments are not going away and you are going to have to work with it if you intend on commenting, now is the time to start suggesting ways of improving the new comment system to try and get an experience that works for you.

I really don't like reading it ("The G is not for turning" is NOT something I like reading) but you are right- we have to be professional about it if we are to improve what we have been landed with.  Still- I am also having a little temper tantrum about it all.  Makes my life and my "job" SO much harder.  :'(  Waah-waah-waah!

My beef with the roll out is that it forces those of us who don't do social community presence to take up a public profile. I've now spent my valuable time, reading up and disabling potential points of contact...circles, squares, +1, whatnot. This scheme is first and foremost for capital gain and less to do with "enabling connectivity" b/t users. User (target) feedback (unless the user happens to be a paying advertiser in Google's immensely overwhelming content-sensitive advertisement mechanism) is not of concern. I have no desire to be in a "circle" or even have an online "life" at all. I have a secret FB profile only for the purpose of taking advantage of offers. Why does Google then make this blanket  assumption, that everyone must wish to be "connected" online? I've been online since the time of fugly websites with simple text (which I actually still find beautiful). Tell me, if Google cared for existing user wishes as far as connecting everyone's social dots is concerned then why on Earth is there no opt out option for G+? There is no answer because G+ is not for us in the first hand. OK, Google purchased YT and they have absolutely a right to do with the service as they please, but this would be kin to Google making you leave your porch light on with a welcome sign and a dish of candy sitting by the door and the only thing keeping people out of your private life is a curtain and lock. Give us options, Google.

The really sad part is that you can even delete the comments of the channel owners if they reply to you.

The best thing about YouTube was to be able to comment on comments or recommend other links to people to answer thier questions or to recommmend a Vid or whatever. You would get an email if they replied to your comment. Simple and perfect funtionality.

The question is- Why would you WANT google+? I HATE how google seems to be trying to take over my whole life. You can't even do youtube now without having a google+ account- which is useless. I have facebook. I don't NEED or WANT google+. But I have an account...so I can keep using a few google features. I do not use my google+ acct. Ok, for those who are willing to link G+ and YT and are still unable to post a single comment with any of the browser and have the blank pop-up issue when they try to use anything but their real name, I think I have found the way to solve your problems. Just go to your browser options in the privacy section generally, find the line about the third-part cookies and set it to anything but Never, hopefully that will allow you to interact with the comment section.

Any way this is still fucking stupid, I have done what I said above and well now YT is working fine but I have now 2 Ghost Profiles on the shitty and failed G+, one with my real name and one with my YT handle and linked to the first one ... Awkward, Not Logical and Useless ... Common Sense is dead my friends ...

You don't have to accept all third party cookies- just those relevant to Google and YouTube.  When a site changes how it functions and places more relevance on cookies to aid functionality the user has to either accept that that is what is required in order to keep using the site or not.  The cookies which ought to be permitted from what I know (and I haven't had the problem because I have my browsers set up to allow trusted sites' cookies anyway) by being added to exceptions are:

The path for this is Settings / Advanced settings / Privacy / Content Settings / Manage Exceptions

Your Google+ Profile is the one with your real name and your Google+ Page (which is not a profile) is your YouTube channel's Google+ linked Page.  It is that which you are opting to use to comment on YouTube with so it isn't a "ghost" Google+, no.  It is active if you are active on YouTube.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Yann Larue 11/18/13 4:30 AM
Thanks for the tips TLFU, it is all fine now. You were right, we just have to accept cookies from Youtube and Google. But I still think this integration is stupid because beside the fact that Google own them both, YT and G+ have nothing in common. So for me it still not logical that we have to sign on the second to use the first.

They do- YouTube is reliant on Google+ since the 6th of November.  Both share the Google+ comment system.

You don't.  You only ever sign into the Google account itself, regardless of where at Google, in order to use any of its Google products.
Re: No reply button under comments after Google + new comment feature....??? Yann Larue 11/18/13 8:34 AM
Look from my point of view TFLU, I was enjoying Youtube to its full potential before the Integration day. Since roll-out, I found myself unable to interact with YT at all and I learn that to be able to use YT to its full potential again, I need to create an account on something else, Google+ which I don't need in my life and don't want to use. Why am I forced to sign in a social network to use YT, I am already on Facebook why do I need a second one ? That is just insane, it basically forcing people to use a failed product in order to access a successful one, it is forcing people to use something they don't want to use and don't need just to make it survive.

So dear TFLU, sorry but you will not convince me that all this mess was ever needed. Before all this I only had a YT account and Gmail box, I was forced to create a G+ account and a page for my YT channel. Forcing people is not right from any point of view. If there was an alternative to YT I would have already quit. If they really wanted to upgrade YT they would have put the news options directly into YT, they wouldn't have taken this stupid detour by G+. YT never needed G+ for the comment section and I said it again YT and G+ have nothing in common. G+ is just a parasite attach to YT.

I will finish by anding a slightly modified quote, I think this is very fitting to the situation : "Remember, remember the 6th of November" ...

I have no intention of convincing you of anything.  Because I couldn't care less what you believe (sorry- but terms of endearment tend to suggest sarcasm unless there is a reason why you would use such a term to a complete stranger.  And I don't care for that).

Before all this I only had a YT account and Gmail box, I was forced to create a G+ account and a page for my YT channel. Forcing people is not right from any point of view.

Actually you had a Google account with a GMail email and a YouTube channel (as well as Picasa if you uploaded channel art since Spring 2012).

No one is "forced" to do anything.  If you do not like that your Google account's YouTube channel now requires a Google+ Profile or Page to comment with then you are welcome to not comment.  Many users have done just that.  But if you will use Google's facilities then you will need to use it on their terms because they get to do what they like with their property.  Their site, their prerogative.

If there was an alternative to YT I would have already quit.

There are alternatives.  I use Vimeo for my professional work and even Facebook.  But they too make you use their products on their terms.

If they really wanted to upgrade YT they would have put the news options directly into YT, they wouldn't have taken this stupid detour by G+. YT never needed G+ for the comment section and I said it again YT and G+ have nothing in common. G+ is just a parasite attach to YT.

That is your opinion only.  It has no bearing in fact and is not addressed by my response.

It may as well be renamed google videos. The have upset a huge youtube fan base with these changes as I like many do not want my real name associated with my videos or my comments - I am happy to be traceable through google plus or whatever by Google in the event of a complaint - I have nothing to hide, but my user ID - gbswales - identifies me much better than my real name which is a very common one and not easily found in a search.  I have had the handle "gbswales" since I first used the internet in the early 90's - and use it everywhere but dare not try to change my google plus user ID because I use android and cannot risk having my accounts suddenly closed.

I enjoyed posting on you tube and reading other peoples comments - perehaps now they are only interested in paying commercial channels that are ever increasingly invading what used to be a friendly social service

Your welcome.  Really.  It is quite simple actually.  I can think of a few other ways to improve the comments.

I'm not dead set against integration between youtube and G+, it is just I'm against the way it was handled.  They should have made it so that we couldn't go around posting ASCII porno comments (for example) right at the start.  I looked at the way they proposed the new system and before it even went onto everyone's laps, I was like "reduce spam?  HA!  My foot!!  This will open up things for more spam if anything!"  Well, I was right.  What I wasn't expecting was things such as the ASCII porn or the serious Bob army posts.... One of the best things about youtube comments in the past WAS the trolls because it was fun to batter back at them!  Playing trolling the troll was fun.  Now with this thing, yeah sure I can block you but you just go make a new integration and your problem is solved.  When I block someone, I want them blocked....No loopholes in the system.

So yeah, integration is nice, just done in a terrible way.  And I'm not linking my youtube to a g+ until I'm satisfied that my privacy isn't being infringed by exposing all my activities on one easy to read page for all to see!
