The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around 小企鵝 1/23/14 7:57 AM
The tabs "Web, Images, Shopping, Video, ..." keeps changing order depending on what I type into search. This is something I've noticed in the last couple of days. Before that, I've just memorized where each item was and click what I need without really looking. But now, I click where I'm accustomed to, and get taken to wildly different pages (eg, I click where I remember "Images" was and get taken to "Shopping")

I've attached screencaps of what I mean.

Thanks.

I think this is a new "feature". However, I find this very hard to use since now I will have to read what each tab says.

+1 on the post and hope Google can provide an option to make it static again.

There's been no official acknowledgment of this behaviour by Google, but the third party Google Operating System blog (which is not affiliated with Google) has published some details:
Google Streamlines Search Options
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around 小企鵝 1/23/14 2:20 PM
So that's what it is, huh. Thanks. I've long thought the best option would be for each person to designate their own navigation link order, or barring that, to have a FIXED ORDER for everyone. Having them move around like this only induces rage.
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around bluequoll 1/23/14 2:30 PM
Comments by John Doe22 in another discussion which has been redirected to this one:

"For some retarded reason, google search tabs started switching. Previously you had "Web" "Images" "Videos" etc. but now you have "Web" "Shopping" "Images" making me click wrong by mistake. And some other times it even switched when I repeat the search to "Web" "News" "Shopping".

Stop changing the tabs or let us customize them. The only tabs that I want are Web and Images and in that order, nothing else.

Stop trying to shove down our throats "improvements" that you think will be better for us. G+ isn't one, this ain't either so stop with this annoying change.

Many of use were already forced to use ABP because of your adware advertisement epedimic, use CSS scripts to hide retarded G+ buttons, forced to have a G+ account to use Youtube. Now what? Now I can't even click a button because it might change the next time I press enter?

Good god, fire the moron that has these ideas."

This really is just unbearable. I can't even think of an explanation for implementing this feature other than that Google is actively trying to make a worse user interface. Search is the only thing they aren't throwing down the drain, and the fact that it is mostly untouched is the only reason I still use Google products at all.

This feature is like buttons on Android moving around the screen closest to where your finger is depending on what it thinks you're going to do, or your car self-driving to where it thinks you want to go before you can do anything.

Now that I think of it, I can honestly see Google implementing those senseless "features" as well.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around blakelyj 1/26/14 10:56 AM
I noticed this recently as well and find it quite irritating. After years of using Google search, I've become accustomed to each button's location. Now I find myself constantly clicking images where I mean to click news, news where I mean to click shopping, or videos where I mean to click news. This update is in line with the other useless and frustrating updates Google's released recently. These updates do not necessarily benefit usability but they often inhibit it. Releasing pointless updates for the sake of change does not improve the product.
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around ToniCipriani 1/26/14 12:26 PM
While right now there's no indication, I can see this a huge annoyance if this was pushed onto mobile.  Just imagine how many extra pages we are loading, that's outright bandwidth theft.

Good grief I'm glad to find this forum. I thought I was either losing my mind or I had a computer virus. I keep hitting the wrong buttons and thinking "I know it used to be here". I've been web searching and this forum is the only place I've found any acknowledgment of this happening.

Its super irritating. More and more I'm finding people I know who are abandoning Google altogether. I don't know who Google is catering to, every forced change they make just makes the experience worse. I started using Google years ago for the simplicity ... and the simplicity just keeps getting further and further away. Come back simplicity ....

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around causalityb 1/27/14 2:09 PM
Same here.  It's amazingly infuriating.  Google, why does it seem like you're deliberately trying to make me hate you?  You know what?  I'm done.  F- it, and F-you.  I can't take this shit anymore.  You make it three extra steps to search for large images, you sodomize youtube with G+, and now the damned google search buttons are actively dodging my mouse.  I'm done.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around John-Dough 1/27/14 3:37 PM
This is the most infuriating thing Google has done in a long, long time.

Seriously, the FIRST RULE OF WEB USABILITY is that you PUT STUFF WHERE USERS KNOW WHERE TO FIND IT.

I *genuinely* cannot believe the decision to do this was made.

Whoever had this idea *must* have known that users were going to mis-click into Shopping when they wanted Images, and vice versa.

Personally I think this has to be an intentional fuck-up to drive more users into "discovering" the Shopping pages.

Also, as an aside, I just discovered that Google has turned my Web History back on, without my permission. I disabled it months ago.

As for a Google alternative, you can use Dukgo.com or Startpage.

Goodbye Google.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around 小企鵝 1/27/14 3:58 PM
I tried out startpage. It seems that even though it's using google search results it doesn't display all the results. Why is this?

I really hope someone in google can see this thread and at least put the buttons back they where they belong.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around gunnysack 1/28/14 11:14 AM
It's no accident; from the tools & filters page:

The panel at the top of your results page will show a location as well as dynamically show the search modes and filters that are most useful for your particular search. Use these tools to filter and customize the results you see.

Driving me nuts as well, I had all the link locations stored in muscle memory. Now I have to read through the list every single time because who knows what order they'll be in.

Google is becoming more and more trashy far too fast to be comfortable. I'd be more than alright with this change if it were toggleable, but of course it isn't.

I wonder if I should put research into Bing...

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around BrokenEye 2/1/14 3:21 AM
Unfortunately Bing is even worse. Well, actually I don't know anything about how well it functions, but that's only because the front page is so goddamned gaudy and loud that I literally can't stand to look at it long enough to type anything into the search box.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I think a big part of why Google is going downhill (apart from every single employee apparently having been fired and replaced by morally repugnant mental incompetents) is that they're trying to be Bing, at least from an aesthetic (or lack thereof) standpoint.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around negative x 2/1/14 8:40 AM
I think one of the reasons why people aren't talking about it is because it's kind of hard to describe/search for the correct terminology. "Search categories"? "Search tabs"? "the Image, Movies, News tabs"? None of these are ideal and pretty hard to look up.

I did a bunch of searches and I only found this thread on the 5th or 6th search by googling "why do google web videos images news keep moving around".

It explains why the links to services changes.

Cheers,

Afterthought:  It is unofficial news and tips about Google but not "by" Google.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around ericlaw02 2/1/14 9:20 AM
This is really infuriating, I've clicked "Maps" accidentally for at least 30 times so far. Entering numbers as a search term doesn't mean I want to search for a road.

Yet another nice Google "improvement".

(Brilliant, Google. Allow me to submit a reply to the wrong thread, then ignore it and say 'Whoops, you should've been in the main thread!'. Nor do you seem to support editing posts, so I had to delete and repost.)

Came on this site specifically to complain about this. Muscle memory has me clicking the link next to 'Web' when I want images. Just because you 'think' that string is a ZIP code, doesn't mean I want Shopping, Maps, and Videos to come before Images -- that string was a part number, and I wanted to see what the part looks like.

There's really no way of knowing which order our categories will show up.

'walker 53687' gives me Web, Maps, Shopping, Images, Videos.
'walker 54481' gives me Web, Shopping, Maps, Videos, Images.

Google is really starting to turn into Apple -- "We know what's best for you. Conform to how WE want you to use our products."

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around riznof 2/1/14 1:35 PM
Really annoying Google, please stop AB testing us and causing us to waste our time clicking on useless links. We know what we want to click already
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Paul Huskey 2/1/14 11:43 PM
I mean, really now. What's the first rule of usability? The first law of interface design?  Keep things consistent.  If I'm using a Windows-based interface, I expect the menu bar to be at the top of the window. 'File' will be the left-most option, 'Help' will be the right-most option.

This ties into muscle memory -- the fastest, most convenient interface is one that is always in a consistent, well-known order.  We all KNOW that Images is immediately to the right of Web. That's how it's always been. We don't have to read, we don't have to identify. Our eyes just have to casually glance near the bright Google logo and click that second bit of text.

With the new 'dynamic categories', all muscle memory is thrown out the window, you never know what to expect.  You have no idea what order it's going to be in. Now instead of an impulse "second bit of text from the Google logo", it's "Stop. Read them all. Is 'Images' even in this list? It might be under 'MORE' now because Google thinks Images comes in 6th place behind Shopping and News.  Google thinks you're more likely to search 'Videos' within their search engine instead of just going to YouTube in the first place."

Google, why are you trying to sabotage your own products?  What happened? Two years ago, you were on top. Now, in 2014, it's like you've just given up. You're drinking alone at the bar, sloppily shoving pretzels in your mouth, ignoring texts from your friends inviting you out to that club three blocks away.  You're spiraling downward. Get ahold of yourself, give us our customizability back, stop trying to impose Apple-like restrictions on us.

I was so used to the buttons that I didn't even read them, in fact I didn't even looked at them, I just knew that clicking there would take me to the images.

I'm looking for an alternative and once I find it I'm never going back, enough of moronic Google stuff for me, I'm moving away from this insanity.

Google really needs a decent competitor... Everything is getting worse, gmail, android, search, drive, etc. I bet Google won't stand a day with some serious competition, that's what absolute monopoly does, they think they can just spill shit on the faces of the users and it's gonna be alright, but that's not true and I hope users won't forget the smell of shit when there's a competitor and Google will be begging us to go back.

Probably this post will be deleted (and the deletion will be omitted, Stalin-style) but the moronic swapping buttons will never be fixed.

Have we found a way to turn this off yet? Chrome extension? Something?
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around DerekFB 2/9/14 12:38 PM
Ugh, I'm glad I found this thread. Like many people here, I mostly use the web, images, and video options, and have been conditioned by years of use to instinctively click where they used to be. When I noticed this problem about a week ago, I was explaining it to my friend while googling some various things on the side, and I clicked the shopping tab instead of images THREE TIMES IN A ROW during the conversation. It's so deeply ingrained in my muscle memory that I even consistently mess it up if I'm literally thinking about the exact problem at the same time.
Google, at least make an option to turn this off, or even (heaven forbid) to rearrange the order of the search options to the user's specifications. Just because I don't use the shopping tab doesn't mean others don't, but I guarantee that it will never be what I'm looking for if I click the option to the right of web search.
The fairly recent change to the image search results layout messed with my muscle memory a lot too, where I'd hit back out of instinct after clicking a picture. The difference there is that, after getting used to it, the new system was actually a bit more efficient. Getting used to this system will mean that people won't be clicking the wrong tab, but they will still have to check the order before clicking, every single time. Is it so inconvenient to click a tab that's 2 or 3 spaces from the left, if you know it'll consistently be there??

I find it interesting that more often than not, "Shopping" is the first in line of my options. Surely this new "feature" is not purely driven by marketing and sales? Pretty transparent there Google, because there's no possible way to justify this moronic decision as useful in any other way.

With the success of this feature on Google search, I suggest that it should be added to Android. You can make it where everything continually moves around on phones and tablets so that people are forced to be immersed (more) in the experience. Maybe we could even have dynamic email addresses and phone numbers, so that we always have to look things up to be sure they're right. (I wish there was a typeface for sarcasm, that would actually be useful.)

negative x, you're correct.

It's such a vague and hard to describe issue, so for whatever reason people are unable to "link up" with eachother over this aggrivating issue. It's not a very easy one to seek out, and I was just finally able to find this thread after trying to figure out what the heck was going on for the last few days.

I first started noticing that the results page links were jumping around just after New Year's, and it's been driving me nuts ever since. Sometimes even "Images" is dropped all the way down under the "More" menu - are you freaking serious? Images is the second most-used type of search.

Google, the design choices you guys are making are absolutely insane. Stop messing with your established products. I've been using Google search since 1998.

I've been using Google since around 1998 as well.  Before it was popular and widely used.  I know this company, how they work.  They sold out in like late 2005.  Everything they do is for profits, and then the user.  The user comes second with Google.

The only reason they switched up the search tabs was so people can start clicking on "Shopping".  It is so they can make more money.  They have yet to change this feature back, nor given their users any option to opt out of this nonsense.  I have not been able to find a 3rd party plugin to put the old tabs back neither.

For the first time in a really long time, And as a regular Google user who has been using Google since like 1998 (15 years?)   I started using a different search engine, Bing, and I will probably not use Google Search again until they fix this.

Google has great ideas but shit terrible execution. Take for example, Google Drive, you'd expect that 99.99% of the world uses the hierarchical file system to navigate folders, but how do they implement their folder navigation? Here's a hint, the main folder contains ALL your files, regardless of what subfolder it's in. Imagine the crazy mess it was.

Luckily they "fixed" the system when they rolled out their monthly paid premium membership. But probably because money was involved and they know people would NEVER adopt their crap UX.

The more I encounter it, the more I think this is one of the dumbest things Google has ever done — and they've done some pretty dumb things!

It's probably down to the average age and experience of Googlers being less than half that of their user base.
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Cory Lemay 2/22/14 11:38 AM
I completely agree. I've used Google forever and the thing is, after two or three uses, one knows where the buttons are and saves time by unconsciously clicking them. It doesn't make sense to make it more difficult to search, when the whole point of using Google is to have a quick and reliable search engine.

I agree immensely. I think that Google has a surplus of employees who does nothing but come up with new "ideas" but instead - in reality - ruins it for every user. It is annoying.
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around I hate this stuff 2/25/14 9:55 PM
I get this too, I absolutely hate it. I used to auto click the second tab for images, now I get some random junk like MAPS.
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Harald Brunner 2/26/14 7:12 AM
Also wrote a user script to counter this nonsense (see attachment). I only know that "Images" originally was the second tab, so the rest may be off, you can easily adjust it though.
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around halfpast3am 2/26/14 9:46 AM
Google has too many smart people making questionable ideas NOT optional. They want to add a feature so 3% of their user base can finally find something easier? fine. Make it optional, turn it off by default and have it inform you that it's there the first time you search after its applied.

Or at LEAST make it a feature which is only enabled for a day, maybe a week to force people to know its there, but after that FUCKING MAKE IT OPTIONAL then I'd strongly suggest off by default.

Microsoft, Google, apple, fucking everybody? Since when did giving people options become such a horrible idea? Force your crappy fucking mobile oriented, idiot oriented options on us if you really cant help yourself, but give people the option. Stop trying to sabotage your own company.

Please make this stop. After the 100th time of clicking the wrong link, I finally went out of my way to post this just so Google knows how terrible their decision is.

Take your pills. I'm seriously hoping your post was satire.  Realistically, it doesn't matter what Google or YouTube or Obama does, there's still going to be suicide attacks in the Middle East. That's just kinda... what they do. They're not gonna just "Oh we're all good now" and start planting gardens.

On-topic, Google still hasn't seemed to fix this, and user scripts aren't always effective.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around R0M 3/9/14 7:07 PM
Still waiting for this "feature" to be removed. It's frustrating.
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around BrokenEye 3/9/14 8:12 PM
Goddamnit, the Greasemonkey script I submitted seems to have stopped working.

Why do you hate us, Google? Why do you hate your users?
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Chris Vos 3/11/14 10:30 AM
Thanks for your script Harald Brunner.
This new Google feature was driving me crazy for all the same reasons as stated above. They should just leave the tabs where we are used to finding them!
You script appears to have fixed all the madness.
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around JohnIG 3/11/14 12:01 PM
Thanks for the fix, its still a bit weird that it has to be replaced after loaded, any way to get that to happen before the page is loaded?
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around boumbh 3/14/14 1:43 AM
Here is my report for Google:

About the functionality "Randomly switching the place of buttons I frequently use", my feeling is "peculiarly annoyed", my thought is "bad".

I’m tired of being a guinea pig for Google. I’m seriously thinking about finding alternatives...

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Jordan Durose 3/21/14 11:29 AM
@JohnIG In order for it to be fixed before being loaded, it would have to be fixed at Google's servers. Greasemonkey and the like do things to pages after they've fully loaded, and the earliest they can edit is just immediately after loading is complete

Can I suggest you add the .co.uk site. I had to add it in to get it working
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around hsucks 3/31/14 10:54 AM
I have started using bing. I hate micro$oft as much as the next guy but in this case, it's the lesser evil. The search results in bing is really quite relevant, as good as or better than google's.

Plus, it doesn't have the two things google's shoved down our throats:
1) Showing results for <imposed on search string>
Search instead for <original search string>.
===
Bing does a "Results included for..." instead of the hardcore "We've replaced your search string because we don't think you know what you're searching for."

2) elimination of the "+" specification (If I want a keyboard included in the search I should be able to!!) Again, google in their haughty contempt for their users think they know better.
===
Bing uses the "+" specification.

I'm done with google, youtube, and the whole debacle. I'm done.

Bing -- Give it a chance.

If enough users switch, maybe (juuust MAYBE) it will get google's attention. Not that it matters, because I'm never turning back.

Bing it is. Until they infuriate me the way google did.

Goodbye, google. And good riddance!

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around kweinstock 4/17/14 8:04 AM
Agreed. This is ridiculous. Nobody searching for an image, that clicks shopping by mistake is going to end up buying something. Give the advanced users the option to choose our own layout and leave the rest of the people to your will.

Your terrible changes already made me switch back to Firefox from Chrome. Don't make me switch from Google Search too, that's your bread and butter.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Bit Barrel 4/27/14 6:17 PM
Google has lost touch with reality.

Basic user interface design teaches you that you should never change the order in which menus appear. That is why menus on OSX, Windows, and Linux are always greyed out if not available, so the location of the menu items doesn't change.

The script posted works sometimes, but not always. It depends whether you enter your search in the google main page, the subsequent search page, or the address bar. And it doesn't work for all google search sites such as .co.uk, .au, etc.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Piggeman 5/6/14 4:37 AM
yeah, this constant addition of new "features" is starting to resemble the 90's, when software manufactures bloated their software to the point where you couldn't use it anymore,
this is exactly what Google, both with their search engine, and also with Chrome (which is supposed to be small light weight and fast, but which is getting more and more bloated, and non-user friendly)

there are also other companies doing the same crappy decisions, companies like Firefox is also heading this way.

regarding search engines I've also been trying Duckduckgo, but find their search results not good enough, but with time those will improve and i will make the switch from Google..
right now with Google's non user-friendly approach I'm almost ready to make the switch right away

Four months already and they still havent fixed this!
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Bit Barrel 5/22/14 2:53 AM
It is not a bug, its a feature. Google will never "fix" it. They just ram this crap down our throat and we are expected to swallow it.
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Candurry Skazutz 5/22/14 10:44 AM
And I bet you're really good at swallowing stuff you don't like, huh?

I Installed that script which fixes the problem.

If you don't have something nice to say about people complaining about this corporate BS then please change the channel.

The more I think about this, the more depressing your statement becomes.  Who is suffering the most from this 'feature'? Who is at the biggest disadvantage?  Long time users.   Someone who is new to Google lacks the muscle memory, so they're going to be accustomed to always searching for their category.  They'll just see the dynamic categories as the norm, which may steer them away from Google (since they are new, they have no commitment)

Only people who have been using Google and are emotionally connected to it are seriously affected, thanks to muscle memory.

Way to go, Google -- you made it worse for everyone for different reasons.
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around JohnIG 6/13/14 1:25 AM
So your script just got blocked for me by Google, because it wasn't installed through the Chrome Web Store.

This makes me want to pull my hair out. Google can't even just say "ok, users have adapted it to their purposes, that's fine". No, they have to block our solutions too.

Dagnabit Google, I thought you weren't evil.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Bit Barrel 6/13/14 4:32 AM
For me the script just got blocked as well.
I cannot believe how arrogant this company is. Really, it is just beyond belief.
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Piggeman 6/13/14 4:39 AM
it still works with greasemonkey in Firefox...
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Bit Barrel 6/14/14 1:36 AM
Piggeman,
Where do you get the script for greasemonkey from to fix this google lunacy?
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around ThunderRhapsody1 6/15/14 10:13 AM
I am using Tampermonkey on chrome and this code works lovely.

Just copy it into grease/tampermonkey
I have modified it so that it includes UK.

I've been using the script harald brunner posted in his postfrom feb 26

That tampermonkey / greasemonkey script has stopped working as well. So google is actively hunting down all fixes for this "feature". Anyone else has the same problems?
Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Ralenti 7/30/14 1:59 PM
Is there anyone who thinks this is useful? I don't usually say things like this, but this is retarded. Why anyone would spend time writing this piece of software is beyond me.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around jcj83429 8/12/14 12:35 AM
guys, all you need to do is edit out the following part of the script and it will continue to work:

if (tabs.length != 9)
        return;

the downside of this is that if new search tabs show up it will not appear unless you disable or update the script. the upside? after this edit you can hide useless tabs by removing it from the list at the top of the script.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around jcj83429 8/12/14 12:38 AM
here's the edited script

http://pastebin.com/Kt7SZfwy

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Harald Brunner 8/12/14 12:47 AM

For me my original script still works as intended. As a side note: That part of the script is intended to delay the page modification until all tabs are loaded, as modifying the page earlier may lead to unintended behavior.

Re: The items under the search page's search box keeps moving around Elizabeth Fine 8/19/14 11:50 PM
So is that it? It's final and unchangeable?
