Shopify Site and "Who Links Most" Myshopify.com links "Duplicate Content"? Douglas Levere 11/7/13 3:50 AM
I've read the FAQs and searched the help center.

Hello

My site has been Live on the Shopify.com shopping platform since August 2013, we were developing there for many months previously. Before August 2013 we lived on a self developed drupal site for 3 years with great SEO. Since we have been on Shopify our organic Google search results are near "Zero". Some of the problem is a result of Shopify and google images problems that are not yet resolved.

I have concern about the fact that my webmaster tools "Who Links Most" for my www.printcollection.com site show over 32,000 links to myshopify.com as in the small image below. I have attached the downloaded "Table" from the webmaster tools report.

This can not be good since these links are all printcollection.myshopify.com links or "Duplicate Content". This huge amount of duplicate content has got to be negative on my SEO. Is this as negative to Google as I believe? Any advice on it?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Doug

Not sure if new, but visiting say printcollection.myshopify.com/products/photogram-circles-shaking seems to redirect to  www.printcollection.com anyway.

So should be good.

As a backup, you should use the WMT 'Change of address' feature - after claiming both domains, to also notify Google the domains are equal

ie you changed from the myshopify domain to the custom one...

Barry

Yes it redirects however a shopify "help" person told me that when you develop a site with them and allow google to see the printcollection.myshopify.com arresss during development it keeps those addreees. Even when you you have the site set up to only "show" your main www.printcollection.com

We have not truly moved from printcollection.myshopify.com. That is the main engine for the site. www.printcollection.com is fed from printcollection.myshopify.com

Can I just expect google to eventually forget this content? It is the true addresses where the content lies.

As well we had added other domains we own to the shopify system intending them to redirect to www.printcollection.com, however they seem to have added URL's now in my eyes "Duplicate Content".

We had added these domains to the shopify system to "redirect" not to have duplicate content of our site.

Since they don't seem to be disappearing from google's memory we have now removed them from shopify's system and just having them redirect to printcollection.com via netsol.

Will they just disappear over time?

Thanks

Doug

We have been having this same issue for MONTHS!   Have not been able to get an explanation? Thoughts?

I forgot to mention, has been happening since June, Since Shopify 2 .   When we launched in Sept 12 this was not a problem.   Would really appreciate any solutions!   This has been a mystery .

Doug are you having google image indexing issues as well?

Chris

What is the URL of your site?

Yes, I was the one that brought it up on Shopify help, and on the google forum. Funny, Chris has closed that question to show that it is now solved! I guess I don't have the problem anymore, except as of today nothing has changed.

Looking again, notice the redirect is via a roundabout route (didnt notice this before, just saw the 301 in there)

--2013-11-12 10:59:15--  http://printcollection.myshopify.com/
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 301 Moved Permanently
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 302 Found
Location: http://www.printcollection.com/ [following]
--2013-11-12 10:59:15--  http://www.printcollection.com/

Maybe Google doesnt like the 302. Maybe ask shopify if can turn that into a single 301?

Also you never confirmed if you've used the change of address tool in WMT.

As a sidenote, checking your extra domains, dont work either...

If printcollection.shopify.com fed your main site, but it is also reachable on its own, clearly you have a duplicate content issue.

Whatever action you take (e.g. adding a noindex to led Google forget that URLs, or add a nofollow on those links), I suspect the content will be picked as it is compromising the visibility of the site on your new URL.

So, I guess the issue need to be investigated further on the way how you

a) retrieve the content
b) use the old shopify site

I hope this helps.

I have not used the "change of address" in the past and not sure how I can now do that?

I will look into the 302 but my guess is that shopify will not allow modification to indicate the single 301 but I will ask.

Craig Miller are you reading this and can you advise?
Re: Shopify Site and "Who Links Most" Myshopify.com links "Duplicate Content"? Douglas Levere 11/12/13 4:39 AM
The content is at printcollection.myshopify.com

Part of the problem is that we were developing on that URL before we were live. So google could see all of this content. Now that we are live I believe the way shopify sites are set up, all of those URL's should only redirect. But they google still knows that all of those links exist. That is why I believe they are listed in by webmaster tools and I would like them excluded, to avoid the "Duplicate Content".

Thanks

Doug

Yes I have read this several times. But each time I read:

Important: In order to use the change of address tool, make sure that you've added and verified both your old and new sites, and read the guidelines on moving your site to a new domain

That old site is not live. My old site is not currently at a domain. It is living at an IP address for now. (Pages from there are still reporting into google from time to time and there is a NO CRAWL robots text on that server, if I leave a browser up with it on the pages report into errors on my webmaster tools)

As well we continue to get google reporting errors on the printcollection.myshopify.com URL. Every day it reports crawl errors even though we have our site set up properly in their system (it is stet up as best as we can since we have minimum control)

Please be more specific as I don't know where to go from here with the "Change of Address"

Let me know if this helps.

OK Barry

I think I get it now. I have taken ownership of

I have done a "Change of Address" for all of them to www.printcollection.com

So should I as well file a "Change of Address" for printcollection.myshopify.com? That is what you were suggesting right? ( I hope)
Re: Shopify Site and "Who Links Most" Myshopify.com links "Duplicate Content"? Seoer 11/13/13 1:46 AM
By redirecting the URL with a 301, it is just a matter of time for GWT to realise this is no duplicate content. In fact, a redirect move the user agent straight to the new site, so there is anything concerning if this is the case.

Yes, absolutely!

Re: Shopify Site and "Who Links Most" Myshopify.com links "Duplicate Content"? Douglas Levere 11/13/13 6:04 AM
I get a

Restricted to root level domains only

As it is a subdomain.
Re: Shopify Site and "Who Links Most" Myshopify.com links "Duplicate Content"? barryhunter 11/13/13 6:44 AM
Drat! Sorry about that.

I was mislead by the example

In addition, make sure your original site is not a subdomain (for example,http://newsite.example.com)

I thought it meant the destination (new) couldnt be a subdomain, not the old site.  Your newsite is not a subdomain.

... so if you can't change the redirect that shopify use, not a lot can do.

But at the end of the day you are only fearing this is 'negative'. As far as I understand, you dont actully have any evidence its causing a negative effect right?

Re: Shopify Site and "Who Links Most" Myshopify.com links "Duplicate Content"? Douglas Levere 11/13/13 8:06 AM
My SEO for "Web" results are OK but our traffic is more driven by images. Google is just not allowing our domain to resolve for searches we "owned naturally" in the past.

Our results appearing on google are perhaps 70-80 % below what we reported before we moved our site to Shopify. So I am looking for what the problem is. The current change that is taking place with their CDN to the more static image ending of the "v=" I hope will help but currently our images have not been reindexed and very few of the 1600 images we have are reporting for "DIRECT" searches on their product titles.

Here is one that is currently reporting at the top but it is an exception to most that does not report at all:

"American Frohse Anatomical Wallcharts"
https://www.google.com/search?q=American+Frohse+Anatomical+Wallcharts&safe=active&client=firefox-a&hs=KkJ&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=haGDUq3UOobIsASOzIKgDA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1479&bih=772

Here are two that we would report at or near the top for many images searches in the past now we don't appear at all:
https://www.google.com/search?q=American+Frohse+Anatomical+Wallcharts&safe=active&client=firefox-a&hs=KkJ&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=haGDUq3UOobIsASOzIKgDA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1479&bih=772#q=wpa+photographers&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&safe=active&tbm=isch

Re: Shopify Site and "Who Links Most" Myshopify.com links "Duplicate Content"? Douglas Levere 11/13/13 8:08 PM
So, should I "Disavow Links"?

If you want Google to ignore all links from an entire domain (like example.com), add the line domain: example.com

Would it be correct to Disavow these domains with all these duplicate links?

myshopify.com      31,400
printmuseum.net    16,832
printcollection.net    1,738

Its only a personal opinion, but NO.

From that page:
We recommend that you disavow backlinks only if you believe you have a considerable number of spammy, artificial, or low-quality links pointing to your site, and if you are confident that the links are causing issues for you.

At the moment, its unclear what actual 'issues' or harm these link are causing. You seem to fear they are causing issue, but haven't proven it?

Re: Shopify Site and "Who Links Most" Myshopify.com links "Duplicate Content"? Douglas Levere 11/14/13 4:38 AM
OK

If we look at the top search queries for "images" the last month here is the top of the report. Sorted by Impressions.

Before we were on shopify we were the top with one or in most cases many results. Now as you can see our results are just nowhere. It is clear that google knows we have content that satisfies many searches but it just does not report our content. Yes the big question is why? We still have not been deeply crawled since shopify changed the way the CDN was reporting image to the V= method.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

As of today we still have not been crawled on Images since Nov 8th. Our products have not been updated either.
