How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. anar_baku 4/6/12 2:06 PM
In the past couple of days, as I visit a shopping site a little sliding window pops up on my Chrome browser, offering my coupons for that site. This is very annoying and I am sure I haven't installed it, so confused how it has sneaked in. I thought it would be easy to remove and looked up in my Extensions list - but it doesn't exist! Neither does it exist under my Applications list. There doesn't to be anything on the web to suggest how this can be removed, so I'm guessing it's relatively new.

This is driving me crazy - please suggest how I can remove.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. caro1 4/6/12 4:40 PM
This just started happening to me as well. Saw in others posts that people were finding it hidden in extensions under the options tab, checked all of mine and found it under Read It Later Fast's options. Open all of your extensions and check under each one's options until you find it. People are sneaking this into their extensions to make money off of them.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. anar_baku 4/9/12 7:21 AM
I was just coming back to the forum to answer my own question, but I can see caro1 has beat me to it! Only slight difference, the extension that was causing this for me was Read Later Fast, but same thing really.

I realised that colour of the pop-up window was orange, same as the arrow button provided by Read Later Fast, so I went to the extensions menu, clicked Options and unticked the option that says:

"Enable similar product search powered by Superfish"

and this solved it.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. WizardNo1 4/9/12 8:08 PM
Go to "customize and control Google chrome" > Tools > Extensions
Check each extensions options. One of them did an update and came with superfish.
Mine was "Read Later Fast" . Just disable it.

@caro1 - Your right, thank you for your help, "Read It Later Fast" just got removed fast, theres no way im going to support that behaviour
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. JPS24 4/17/12 10:03 AM
Thanks guys!  Disabling Read Later did the trick.  This was driving me insane.  I couldn't actually click on items in some of the online stores I was looking at!  Complete UX fail.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. Boffin13 4/26/12 5:19 AM
Yes the problem is in Read It Later plugin, however it is possible to remove superfish injections by disabling appropriate option in plugin's options
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. caro1 4/29/12 8:26 AM
Who wants to keep an extension that sneaks this stuff in? Who knows what they'll try next. I don't trust 'em.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. ysl12 5/3/12 9:41 AM
i uninstalled read it later fast, which doesn't exists on the Chrome web store anymore, but the superfish still persists...it is super persistent and annoying.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. hike.mountains64 5/8/12 8:48 PM
I tried removing one at a time and now have none.

I have no extensions whatsoever in my:
"customize and control Google chrome" > Tools > Extensions" folder/tabs(settings)

and yet this annoying pop-up ad window displaying buying alternatives "window" keeps showing up.

time to try firefox?

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. pateras 5/10/12 1:57 PM
Thank you so much. That was super annoying, and I don't think I would have ever thought to check to see if it was piggy-backing on one of my extensions.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. cfc2000 5/11/12 6:23 AM
Afraid firefox is just as bad, if not worse.  I installed fasterfox addon to enable me to disable all sorts of irritating shopping search addons. Lots of addons pay for themselves by adding in shopping analytic tools - the price we pay for having them free.  You could try editing them out of the registry entirely by using regseeker (free) but make sure you do a registry backup first.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. dm1336 8/15/12 9:54 AM
I noticed ScriptNo extension was always disabling www.superfish.com from loading and did a quick search and found this topic.

I disabled the extension called "Fast Save" not sure how or why it was installed in the first place, but ScriptNo is not showing any www.superfish.com stuff.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. Shanno 8/24/12 9:14 AM
The extension causing this for me was X Notifier...  And there was NO option to deselect superfish (or Setega powered by superfish).
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. dkess_z 8/30/12 3:37 PM
Same here, but there is a way to disable Setega (only that is hiding) you need to right click in the content area of the browser go to "X-notifier(Gm..." and un-check "Setaga Services" and you are done

They don't call it Segata or Superfish, so I missed it the first couple of times.

OMG thank you so much for this info! I had no idea. Is Google aware of this behaviour? I can't believe those people would sneak this stuff into my extensions! Goodbye Read It Later Fast, I'm uninstalling you. I'll never trust those developers again.

I have had trouble ( and a massive row with my husband about my naivety ) from superfish. Tried all sorts and couldn't find anything - no extensions, not in the other places suggested, but did take the tip to start going through everything. So here's where I found it ( I am pretty pc illiterate, sorry )
On customise and control google chrome
Settings
Show advanced settings
Privacy
Content settings
All cookies and site data
   found Superfish here
opened it and removed when I could open nothing further

Seems to be gone

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. cfc2000 11/10/12 3:42 AM
You say you aren't  pc literate, but that's a very good summary of how to get rid of unwanted extensions!
BTW tell your husband that even IT professionals succumb to these types of spyware every now and then! Ons econd thoughts, don't : not worth having rows over computers otherwise life would be an endless battlefield.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. Nathaniel Hale 11/20/12 8:16 PM
I found the culprit on my Chrome: Facebook ++ (found here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/facebook-%20%20/paacdnaidbnbgpjnbhmdjchcjkdbgdom)

I don't recommend you install it, the devs hide its existence. There are no settings for the extension, nor is there mention anywhere of the Superfish adware coming with the package. I promptly removed it from Chrome.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. Randy021488 11/20/12 11:05 PM
I found it under an extension call SOFTWARE Assist I disabled the extension then I found it in programs and uninstalled it.

I encouter this problem too in chrome(language: Simple Chinese,  version: 23).
The Reason is that I installed the quick-markup-screen-captu extension, and it has an option called shopping assitant. When I disable the option, the injected js files from superfish.com just vanished.

The extension is useful, However, I didn't know it also has such an option!

It wasn't in my Extension list either. I disabled an extension in Chrome called "SearchAll" and it thankfully went away.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. Jonathan Pease 12/7/12 4:46 PM
You won't find it as an extension by itself.  I finally found it under the Search All options.  Uncheck Superfish there, and it'll go away.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. lotsofjoy 12/10/12 10:59 AM
FVD Speed Dial was the culprit for me. In the Options window, uncheck the box in the upper right side that saus "Superfish suggestions"
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. jhuesman 12/10/12 11:58 AM
I just had this start. The offending extension is
FVD Speed Dial - 3D Wall, Sync, New Tab Page 3.1.1

So I'll be finding a new "new tab" utility.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. Helen Fairman 12/10/12 3:05 PM
I was able to shut it off in FVD Speed Dial (once I knew that was where it was, thanks to you!).  It was under the global options (gear icon), on the Appearance tab. Unchecked "Superfish Suggestions", closed Chrome, reopened and it was gone. Ahhh. Much better.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. Ursadorable 12/11/12 8:13 PM
Sadly I don't trust FVD Speed Dial anymore now that I know that superfish could be in the background harvesting my browsing profile.  Idiot developers slipping extra crap in.

HOLY HELL! So I had mine under the Adblock extension... HOWEVER, it wasn't under "superfish" or "fastsave" it was under "easylist"

Very annoying.  AND IT TOOK FOREVER TO FIND! I still hate every other browser.  The only complaint I have now about googlechrome is the fact that shockwave keeps shutting down on me

Sorry, the message above was directed to John Tanner, didn't mean to hijack.

My culprit was FVD, as well. I am so pissed because I just spent a ton of time setting it up with complex tab and sync and everything. I am now on the hunt for a new tab organizer. Any ideas are welcome.

It happened to me with the 'Flash Video Downloader' extension. Theres are many different ones but this one has a large blue arrow as its logo, and isnt available on the Chrome Webstore.

I noticed superfish because it was lagging ebay search pages for me like hell. Even flash videos playing in the background would freeze up until the little 'See More' button had loaded on the search thumbnails for each auction, just awful.

Any help ?

I did disable all extensions and finally no more sneaky Shopping Assistant showing up ! I will enable them one by one to find the culprit. Hope it helps. ;)

There it is!  FVD with the blue arrow icon.  I tried disabling it and it worked.  Unfortunately it still does what I need it to do, so I won't be removing it entirely.  I'll just have to put up with having to re-enable it when I want to use it and remembering to disable it again.

There are quite a few extensions that install superfish or search tweaker etc on to any browser whether it's your default one or not. You can have firefox as your default, and only occasionally use google chrome (when you are fed up with the memory leaks with firefox) and then discover all sorts of cr*p has been foisted on you.  Just be very careful when you are downloading freeware that you opt out of all the "extras". The download boxes are designed to mislead - it's how they make a few bob. I'm assuming this advice would be helpful if you are a relatively inexperienced user.  If you are an advanced user, just think twice before rushing ahead!

Nothing else shows up in my Chrome extensions, so don't know how to find how to get rid of Superfish.

It has disabled all buttons in my Google Calendar - when I try to edit an event, advance to the next weekly period - nothing happens, but the error in Developer console shows that when I clicked the buttons, a superfish url was blocked, which stops my Calendar actions from occurring.

This is a malicious little program and causing me much grief on my work laptop.

X-notifier now comes with this annoyong Superfish coupons.

If you go through your extensions, check any that shows an options tab. Chances are there'll be something in one of them. As well as the extensions above, mine was in the FastestChrome extension. Seems to be appearing in a lot of different things & would question the legality of what it does.

I've read that quite a few easy shopping addons were to blame, but it seems it got into my extension called "Better Music for Google Play Music". No options, just simply disabled it, and now i'm looking for the delete button on it.

If you're having trouble finding it, disable one extension at a time, using the problem site as a reference, you will have to refresh the page each time you enable/disable an extension to see which extension is the problem.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. anony_mouse 6/13/13 8:12 AM
The extension 'Orbvious Interest' for the webservice 'Pocket' (I believe previously 'Read it later') also recently silently installed Superfish without the option to disable the Ad Spam behavior.

I deleted the extension right away, all working fine since then.

Same here. I liked this extension, right up to the point where it started popping up unwanted ads. Actually, more specifically, I still liked it for an hour after that because it took me that long to figure out it was the culprit.

If you check the reviews for that extension, you'll see a recent trend:

Yeah, what an ultra annoying pop up. I found mine under the extension "Search All" which I don't remember installing. Simply disabled it and now the pop ups have gone :)

I found mine in the MiniClock extension by disabling all extensions and adding one at a time, refreshing my target page.  MiniClock has no option to disable it. Deleted.

You can block superfish completely, no matter which extension is using it (even Adblock!), by using AdBlock.  Under Adblock Options, do Customize >> Block an ad by its URL.  Under "Block URLs containing this text" enter superfish.com and hit "Block it!"
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. iamshivasingh 8/31/13 10:29 AM
In my case it was "Translate Selection" - it did an autoupdate and installed it automatically as "ads".

B*stards!

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. GerardK 8/31/13 11:35 AM
I just got hit with the same thing from Translate Selection.  Today's update with no notification to existing users via a changelog and no indication in the ad that it's even come from an extension let alone which one - I actually sent a Tweet to Dominos asking why they were putting misleading non-functional coupons on their web site before I realised the source of the problem.

I sent feedback asking for the Web Store terms and conditions to require more transparency (e.g. requiring each ad to clearly declare which extension it came from) and I encourage everyone else to do the same.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. gelob 9/19/13 2:31 PM
This happened to me also except it was in the ChromeReload plugin
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. Venus Fur 9/27/13 10:40 AM
The annoying ChromeReload/Snapfish was NOT in the Extensions. I read in this thread that some extensions will have snapfish embedded in thier extensions. What I had to do was turn off ALL my extension, which worked in shutting it off.
I then went back and enabled each extension one by one to find exactly which extension was the problem.

I discoved it was the PINTEREST BUTTON which was the problem.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. j33433 9/28/13 10:12 AM
Just to be clear, there are many "Pinterest" plugins. I am using the official one with no Snapfish:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pinterest/gpdjojdkbbmdfjfahjcgigfpmkopogic

For me, it was one of the last.fm scrobblers that had Snapfish. I found a better one with no spyware (so far):

simply click on the 'Change' button and it will set it to 'disabled'

I just found it in my Scroll To Top.  If you go into Extensions and click the options for Scroll To Top there is a drop down for Product Search and Disable Advertising.  I set Product Search to Off and Disable Advertising to On and superfish is gone.  I like Scroll To Top to much to get rid of it.

It is also included with the MeasureIt extension, which has no option to turn it off.  I only managed to figure out by going to a page where it was doing an ad, then slowly turning on and off extensions one by one.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. Davide Mauri 10/25/13 12:48 PM
Hello everyone, I just ran into this and discovered it was related to the ads options within "Smooth Gestures" extension.

Luckily, it can be turned off by going into extension's options and configuring:
- "Enable Ads" as "I'd rather you starve"
- "Enable Product Search" as "No, I don't like money"
Both this options are under the "Other settings" section.

My 2 cents.

However, I can't trust them anymore so even though I could use it, I don't anymore.

Neat Bookmarks 0.9.15 clandestinely included Superfish via "Product Search (powered by SimilarProducts).  I determined this by disabling all 10 extensions, then going to passpack.com, which warns you if additional code runs on the login page, with each ext enabled one-by-one.  I then dove into Neat's ext Options and discovered Product Search.  After removing Neat Bookmarks, Superfish no longer appears on every site I visit.

So long Neat Bookmarks, I never used you anyway.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. kindisgood 12/21/13 1:03 AM
Yes that's the kind of devious tat this kind of extension does.
Mine came in the form of a setting within a Pinterest button but others have had it as something within Evernote extension etc.
It will not have 'Turn off Superfish' Button ( or whichever one it is you have). It will be cloaked under settings/options within one of the extensions.
Go through each extension and turn off options/settings until you find it. Or delete the whole extension if you think it's the culprit. You can always download it again.
I think some of these extensions are not from the originating product/software but tampered (evil!) extensions. Try and get extensions as directly from the original as possible.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. Mike Ba. 1/17/14 3:58 AM
for me it was Craigslist Ultimate® - Better Craigslist! extension that was causing all the spyware and malware.  The minute I disabled the extension, thefind.info, superfish.com and others stopped trying to load in the background.
Here is a link to the extension...
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/craigslist-ultimate%C2%AE-bett/aojncbgeoodikegginhhhhcnbnckphko?hl=en-US&gl=US

it is highly reviewed well which is a shame as users dont know the harm it is causing as a security issue
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. zerоrsw 1/17/14 12:22 PM
Yes, it was Pininterest, not the craigslist. but thing is if Pininterest trusts them then it's definitely not malware! I trust Pininterest, so as long as there is an option to remove the ads for superfish then I keep the extension. Craigslist one allows you to disable the ads.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. sammy dan 1/17/14 12:39 PM
Pininterest had the ads. But it's a trusted application so maybe superfish isn't so bad after all.

Pininterest for me too. But I liked the extension too much so I kept it.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. zerоrsw 1/17/14 12:43 PM
You can disable Superfish if the developer is putting in honest ads. There is an option there to disable it. Some developers will have an option to disable ads if you make a donation, but you don't need to donate to disable Superfish. The alternative is to remove the extension, but if it's a great extension, do you expect them to work for free? They have to make money somehow. Be real. The world doesn't work for free. Since it gives you the option to disable as well, then you have nothing to worry about.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. zerоrsw 1/17/14 12:49 PM
Do you think extensions like Pinterest would be adding superfish if it wasn't safe?
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. zerоrsw 1/17/14 12:49 PM

Pinterest has over 1.3 MILLION users. If it wasn't safe then there is NO WAY they would be allowed to still be in the Chrome Web Store.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. zerоrsw 1/17/14 12:49 PM

Didn't you know that Google scans EVERY SINGLE EXTENSION now before anyone can publish it?

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. zerоrsw 1/17/14 12:49 PM

When you make an extension, google asks, "ARE YOU MONETIZING THIS EXTENSION?" ANd has a box to explain.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. zerоrsw 1/17/14 12:50 PM

AFTER THAT, Google WILL NOT PUBLISH THE APP until a HUMAN goes in and verifies that the extension is safe.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. zerоrsw 1/17/14 12:50 PM

THEN AND ONLY THEN, if Google deems the extension is SAFE, then it will be added to the Chrome Web Store.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. zerоrsw 1/17/14 12:51 PM

IF YOUR EXTENSION IS NOT SAFE, then it will be REMOVED from the web store IMMEDIATELY (or never published in the first place if it had something unsafe to begin with), and next to your extension on the developer page it will say, "TAKEN DOWN". What this means is that Google determined your extension is not safe. You have a chance to MAKE IT SAFE,

but until then it will not be available in the Chrome Web Store, AND no one can see it or install it.

Thanks for proving my point.  Anyway, Reddit has a page summarising some the known affected extensions at http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1vir7a/chrome_extensions_are_being_bought_out_by_malware/
The post also suggests that the extensions (source code and all) are being bought out by an adware company (no name is mentioned but that list looks awfully familiar).  Not sure how seriously to take that accusation but it sounds plausible to me.  I don't buy zerorsw's claim that Google thoroughly vets extensions, especially when it comes to established ones that are already monetized through donations.

Temper temper zerorsw.
Something that infiltrates and puts ads up on your own ad free website, or invades another site that you are looking at with a box promoting all sorts of scrappy Ebay tat - a million miles from the product you are looking for - I for one do not need.

Whether it is safe or not is academic.

If it means not having that extension, then I for one can live without that amazing 'free' app.

If it is such an honest open option then declare Superfish by name in each extensions openly and alert people to the fact they are signing up to this before they install rather than weevilling around in the background.
You are as annoying as Superfish/are superfish and your 20+ messages betrays your spammy immaturity.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. Tom Houy 1/19/14 8:04 PM
Superfish is junk. It interferes with the actual content of the web pages you are on. Its ad overlays obstruct actual functionality on the page, such as trying to check out the preview images of a product on Amazon. Not to mention it makes pages load times and browser performance sluggish - as you're mousing over a page, it's constantly trying to load up its own ads.

However if what "zerorsw" is saying about it being approved by Google is true, this is a huge headache. As of right now, there still appear to be many extensions available that have it - including one I complained to Google about myself a couple of months ago.

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. jimbudler 1/20/14 12:20 PM
I saw an article in NBC News about Google yanking extensions from Google store. Apparently Marketers are buying popular extensions from original developers, and then autoupdating those extensions with adware, etc. This lets them add their adware to people's extensions transparently that didn't have them before.

So the status of Superfish may not necessarily be approved by Google, they may not have gotten around to it, yet.

The two extensions removed were "Tweet This Page" and "Add to Feedly".  The author of "Add to Feedly" confirmed that it was Superfish that was added to his extension after he sold it on.

You can read more about how the technology works here:

http://wwws.superfish.com/

So in other words, it sounds like it is constantly scanning the images on every page you visit and comparing the "visual fingerprint" against their own databases - a tremendous waste of your bandwidth and system resources.

If it's such a reputable program, why are they making back room deals with app developers and sneaking it into people's extensions unannounced in the first place?

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. GerardK 1/20/14 1:45 PM
The sad thing is that it actually sounds like quite an impressive technology (assuming it does what they claim).  If they'd only triggered it on demand from a context menu instead of insinuating it into every page and link it might actually have been a useful feature that fulfils the purpose they attribute to it instead of obnoxious browser vermin.

Someone did ask them.  They don't use it at all, it was in a third-party extension (Pinterest Button - the official one is called Pin It Button) that also no longer seems to be in the Chrome store:
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. GerardK 1/21/14 1:39 AM
Perhaps I should be more specific - they don't use it in their extension.  If it's used on the site itself that's no endorsement of the way these extensions behave.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. william aa 1/21/14 12:24 PM
yeah actually this has NOTHING to do with superfish. I read that article, it's pertaining to an adware spammer that CHANGES links on all pages of the web into affiliate links. This is of course against google policies.

NOT SUPERFISH.

Superfish puts ad banners on pages but does not ALTER existing content on any pages at all, which is why Google has approved this ad system. This complies 100% with Google policies.

Moreover the Google system SCANS EVERY EXTENSION delaying to publish it until the virus scanning system is complete. If the extension is flagged by Google's automated system, then Google has to MANUALLY approve (or delete) each and every flagged extension.

Many, many large companies use superfish. This is because it is, as the article said rightly, "it is becoming increasingly difficult to monetize Chrome extensions".

Users are expecting to get perfect, excellently-made, highly-supported, and bug free Chrome Extension applications. However, they expect to get it FOR FREE, as if there were no costs with development.

What this means is that if Google didn't allow any advertising at all, then developers would simply STOP DEVELOPING and eventually due to lack of content and lack of working extensions, users would move away from using Chrome browser extensions and this would make life harder for everyone.

Summary:
If you are going to REFUSE TO EVER PAY ANYTHING then the only way you're going to get great content is if you ALLOW ADVERTISING.

Didn't you know that TELEVISION forces ads on EVERY PERSON IN THE WORLD?

"The extension does offer an option to opt-out of advertising (you are opted-in by default) or you can disable them on your own by blocking the SUPERFISH.COM and WWW.SUPERFISH.COM domains in your hosts file but quietly sneaking ads doesn’t sound like the most ethical way to monetize a product."

Amit Agarwal's statement clearly indicates that Superfish is involved in one of the remove extensions.  Granted, it does not prove that Superfish is the company buying up extensions but whoever is doing so is certainly using it as one of their advertising platforms.  The point about modifying links is questionable (perhaps more than one advertising tool is in use, perhaps a journo is over-egging things).  I've not observed Translate Selection doing this so personally I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt on that point.

But it's not just putting ads on a page.  It's modifying the DOM and making web service calls which by their very definition is altering the content and using additional CPU power and bandwidth that costs the user.  At the very least it places a box on the screen that partially obstructs the user's view and as it doesn't announce that it's part of an extension misleading the user into thinking that it may be part of the original page.  I have also observed it presenting users with fake money off coupons to attract clicks which is no less than a bait & switch.  You're using TV as an analogy but it is ILLEGAL (at least in the UK) for a television advert to deliberately mislead viewers by trying to mimic actual programme content which is exactly what I've observed SF doing.  This lack of clarity is one of the things that Google's new T&C is designed to solve so regardless of whether it modifies links on a page it still violates the terms of the Chrome Web Store in its present form.

They could have made this software work in a way that's transparent and considerate to the user without sacrificing its commercial aspect and people might have willingly accepted it.  Instead they chose to make it misleading, difficult to track down and intrusive then play the poor misunderstood victim when people use the power of social media to express their dislike of these tactics and vote with their feet by choosing to abandon those free extensions rather than pay the price that was asked.

Oh and from http://www.techienews.co.uk/974965/add-feedly-tweet-page-chrome-extensions-removed-ad-policy-violations/

the search engine does not go on actively policing or screening these extensions once it has approved the extensions for inclusion in the Chrome Web Store. It allows silent updating of the extensions in background without actually reviewing the changes.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. william aa 1/21/14 3:40 PM
Once again, those extensions did NOT USE SUPERFISH, they used something else that violates the terms of service.

I have personally emailed Google and they replied saying that Superfish did not violate the terms of service and they would not remove any extensions that use Superfish (unless there was something else that did violate the terms not related to Superfish).

Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. GerardK 1/21/14 4:31 PM
https://twitter.com/harlanlewis/status/421847718042931200 (this was Tweeted by a user 5 days before Agarwal made his blog post and appears to be based on his experience rather than anything related to the ban).

Regardless of the recently banned extensions, Superfish-funded extensions most definitely violate clauses in the Developer Program Policies:
  • Ads must be presented in context with your app or clearly state which app they are bundled with.
  • There is clear attribution of the ads' source wherever those ads appear.
  • The ads do not mimic or impersonate the native ads or content on the third-party website
  • If two pieces of functionality are clearly separate, they should be put into two different extensions, and users should have the ability to install and uninstall them separately. For example, functionality that displays product ratings and reviews, but also injects ads into web pages, should not be bundled into a single extension.
Google have stated they won't be enforcing the new T&C (highlighted) until June 2014 which is the only reason they haven't yet banned all of the extensions people have reported here and directly to them.

I had the same problem, and it's easily 'fixed' by adding superfish.com to your blocked list on adblock plus. While it is still there, it can be a huge pain to find out which extention causes this if you have a lot of them installed. I eventually found that in my case Flash Video Downloader extention was causing it, hidden somewhere in its options menu. But before i found that out I was just using adblock to block it, works just as well.
Re: How do I remove Superfish from Chrome? It doesn't show in my extensions list. jimbudler 2/26/14 8:36 PM
Good idea, but go a little further.

Add both superfish.com and www.superfish.com to your adblock filters.

However, although this stops the annoying ads, it doesn't eliminate network usage. After adding these filters to adblock and monitoring network connections to 66.70.34 addresses I observed many connections being made. Superfish has a block of addresses in 66.70.34. I then added the line "127.0.0.1 www.superfish.com superfish.com" to my /etc/hosts file on Linux. This eliminated the network traffic, as well.

There is an equivalent file on windows, %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
