You can change it easy on this page: chrome://chrome/settings/
Click the avg search and then remove.
And set Google as default search engine.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine BlackieDriver 6/22/12 2:00 PM
@Stefan vd: Your method does NOT work unless the search provider plays by the rules and allows Chrome's settings tools to control their product. VERY many search engines will not be controlled by the tools mentioned in your link because these search engines reset themselves as the default Chrome search engine every time Chrome is closed and reopened. Some MANUAL method to remove rogue search engines is needed precisely because following the methods provided in your link NOT work with these rogue search engines. Because they are deliberately designed to not allow Chromes settings menu to remain in control over their being the default search engine regardless of what the user wants, and regardless of what the user sets in Chromes settings tools.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine BlackieDriver 6/22/12 2:13 PM
"Help....Babylon Search engine has taken over my Google" is one thread where several users have the same complaint: cannot reset permanently the default search engine AND they cannot delete a search engine.

In addition I have posted 2 questions how to remove Speedbit search engine, no help from anybody was forthcoming.

The CHROME tools for managing search engines do NOT work with rogue search engines (there are many of these) designed to circumvent the CHROME settings.

I.E. explorer's developer company has resources to provide solutions when these kind of problems arise. Google does NOT, so far, apparently have the necessary time and resources to provide solutions.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Stefan vd 6/22/12 2:23 PM
+BlackieDriver
Thanks for your explanation!

I know, there is a lot of developer that follow not the correct way. But here on my computer the default search engine is Google (and it's never changed before).
But most user install software from the internet, and that cause the problem. Developer of that software can create registry element in Windows (regedit), and so they can change easy the default search engine, homepage....
Example like Babylon. The translation software + there own search page.

I as TC try to help many Chromie users. I do self once a week a "boost day" (a kindly 24/24h support).

This solved all my problems. You have to uninstall the AVG search program first from your computer.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine BlackieDriver 6/24/12 5:58 AM
There is no X at the end of the lines. I mentioned that above. All you did was tell me what everybody already knows, to click on the X. It doesn't work if there is no x there.

And apparently there is no solution from Chrome. Google is not large enough a company to find solutions for common problems, as Microsoft does for I.E. There are updates to I.E. every few days. Google does not have the manpower to properly maintain there products. Not their fault: they are just a relatively small outfit. Sure they do billions of dollars worth of sales, but they are no Microsoft.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine malpez 6/25/12 7:47 AM
that does not work.  The AVG continues to open as the default even though Google is marked as my default browser and I deleted the  AVG from the list.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Sie_Deen 6/25/12 2:57 PM
Thanks @Stefan vd, for pointing users to the help article about default search engines, and helping users troubleshoot this issue!

Hi folks,
As Stefan vd mentioned, 3rd party programs can sometimes cause unexpected changes/issues. They can make changes to your default browser; change your default search engine, homepage, startup pages, etc. Some of these programs will install other programs/extensions/toolbars that changes your browser's settings instead. If your settings have been changed, please make sure to check the following:
  • If AVG search pages are opening up each time you start up Chrome, check in Wrench > Settings > On Startup > next to the radio button for Open a specific page or set of pages, click on Set pages > remove any unwanted URLs by hovering over the URL until you see an "X" appear to the right side of the URL.
  • If all searches that you perform in the omnibox is returning with results from AVG search instead of your preferred search engine, check in Wrench > Settings > Search Manage search engines > check the list of Default search engines, Other search engines, and Search engines added by extensions, and remove suspicious entries that you are not familiar with. Depending on your extensions, you may not see the last section for Search engines added by extensions.
    • If AVG search is currently selected as the default search engine, you will have to choose another search engine provider as your default first, and then remove the AVG entry. To select another search engine provider as your default search engine, hover over the search engine until you see "Make Default" appear on the right side. Once you have selected your preferred default search engine, you can remove other entries that you do not want by hovering over the entry until an "X" appears on the right side.
  • If AVG is opening up when you click on the Home button, check in Wrench > Settings > Appearance > select the Show Home button checkbox > check if the URL that appears below it references AVG.
  • Also check that there are no extensions installed that may be causing these changes. Go to Wrench > Settings > Extensions > if you see any unfamiliar extension that you do not remember installing, try disabling/removing the extension to see it was causing these changes. To disable, uncheck the "Enabled" checkbox next to the extension. To remove, hover over the extension until you see a trash can icon appear, and click on the icon.
If you do not remember installing any AVG specific software around the time that this change took place, it is advisable to perform a malware scan to make sure that there are no other suspicious programs remaining that could make changes to your settings.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Craig Long 6/25/12 7:33 PM
Also click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall AVG Security Toolbar!  Then be aware of your Programs and Features page.  Watch out for those suspicious 3rd party programs.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Chelsey Pomerleau 11/5/12 5:47 PM
Every time I open a new tab AVG blocks my most visited sites page from popping up and instead shows some type of error.

This happens until I "uninstall" the extension. Is there any way to permanently delete the extension that you have found?

And please PLEASE don't tell me to go to Setting > Extensions > Trash Can cause that only works until my pc is restarted.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Eric-Jon Tairne 11/15/12 6:41 AM
It's the "Show Home Button" issue described in Sie_Deen's response. It is maddening; I removed everything obvious and the thing persisted.

The thing is, I didn't have my home button activated -- so the option didn't present itself in the menu. You have to activate your home button, then clear it out, then deactivate it. Far from obvious.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Mike.Morganm5 1/20/13 10:19 PM
Thank you so much @Sie_deen !

For me, it was deleting the extensions that AVG had managed to install without my knowing.

Go to Manage extensions, and delete anything AVG and you should have your new tab page back.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Ashleigh Dawson 2/11/13 2:25 AM
Hi Guys

All of the options are great. If you remove the Search Engine Add on in Settings and make sure that all of your home pages are set.

Also if you open a new tab and AVG appears, in the TOP RIGHT hand corner there will be a link that says set default new tab. Click on that. Then follow the script and press the OK link. Restart your Chrome browser and AVG will have disappeared!!!

NO UNINSTALLING OF CHROME OR ANY PROGRAM IS GENERALLY REQUIRED TO FIX SMALL PROBLEMS LIKE THIS! :)

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Adam Beck 2/11/13 7:02 PM
I tried a bunch of stuff under the wrench.  Didn't work.  Sounds good, but doesn't work.

When you create a new tab, look in the upper right of the webpage.  There should be a "restore new tab" something or other link there.

That definitely worked for me.

AVG...used to get my respect.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine blake raven 2/13/13 2:04 PM

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Zane Kruemcke 2/14/13 1:59 PM
There are 4 places AVG can hide in your Chrome settings:

Extensions:just uninstall anything with AVG in it.

Settings:
   On Startup
    >click "open the new page"

   Appearance
    >Show home button
change "open this page" to "the new tab page"

   Search
    >Select google from the pull down
    >manage search engines and kill the AVG safe search with fire.

Following all that, in the top right corner of the stupid page itself there should be a blue "restore to default page". click it, and uncheck the AVG box.

THEN RESTART CHROME

It FINALLY worked for me after all of that.

If anybody sees AVG, tell them I hate them.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine slanwar 2/14/13 2:26 PM

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine sleenie 2/22/13 6:12 AM
I have followed all of the step below and I finally got rid of it.

I've learned when I installed a program and it asks if you want to install standard NEVER SAY YES. click on custom. You will find other 3rd party programs listed that you do not want and have to ability to un-check. AVG, Babylon and McAfee are 3 that I find regularly. This time I was in a hurry and got stuck with AVG.

In fact, that is the reason I would never use AVG antivirus nor McAfee.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine chad bouchard 2/23/13 10:04 AM
Thanks, I had tried everything but the "appearance" setting fix, and now that awful thing is gone. AVG developers: if you're monitoring comments, you really have to stop. Your sneaky installation tactics have crossed the line with me again and again, and I see that your choices have permanently spoiled your company's reputation. How should we trust security software that intentionally uses loopholes and workarounds to undermine users' preferences?
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine druede 2/23/13 12:35 PM
This worked after I tried everything else.  I know it's not gone, Google needs to have a better way to get rid of this stuff.  Adobe is the real culprit with their download laden with bloatware.  Microsoft can't find all the hiding places.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Aish Aki 2/24/13 1:29 AM
I tried everything else on this page and yours was the only one that worked. Thanks!
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine John Weinrich 2/27/13 8:51 PM
After doing the obvious and removing everything from Chrome, go to Programs and Features and remove the toolbar they sneakily installed.

AVG SafeGuard toolbar must get in there during an update.  That is what is found under Uninstall a Program in Win7 control panal. Got rid of that and that damn AVG Search page went away
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Tom Kroeck 3/11/13 11:27 AM
This is how I ended up getting rid of it.  I went to the 3 bars up beside the address bar and clicked on it.  I went to settings.  In the second group that says "on Start up" the third dot is marked.  Clear out all those pages it has there by hitting the x beside each one.  Then in add pages I typed in "google.com" and then hit ok.  Now when I bring up chrome it goes directly to google search.  I hope that helps.  I know it finally solved my problem.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Govardan Gopakumar 3/12/13 1:42 AM

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Kyle Scott 3/13/13 4:28 PM
I found a way to remove the AVG search engine and restore my start-up and new tabs page to most visited.

To remove AVG search engine:
1. go to settings
2. go to extensions and diable the default tab extension.
3. close chrome
4. go to control panel - program files - add/remove programs
5. Uninstall "Default tab"

That should remove the AVG Hijacking of your new-tab and startup page.

To restore your start-up and new tabs page.
1. Go to settings
2. Click open on specific page/pages.
3. set page to "chrome-internal:" without the parentheses.

That should take care of that.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Ryan Santos 3/16/13 10:36 AM
AVG 2013 have a hidden plug-in along after installation. Here's the solution.
Go to SETTINGS
> under Privacy click Content Settings...
> look for Plug-ins
> click "Disable individual plug-ins..."
> look for AVG SiteSafety plugin
> click Disable
> Restart Chrome
> DONE!
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine MarcusX... 3/20/13 7:40 PM
Craig Long's suggestion (to uninstall the tool bar) is the only one that worked for me, and it worked quickly. There was no wrench, no Options, and every link to AVG's website was less than helpful (big surprise). When I uninstalled, AVG even led me to a page asking why I am uninstalling. Because I hate you, that's why. Very satisfying.

I have disabled avg as my primary search engine. I would like to remove it from my computer. When I go to programs and features and click to uninstall AVG, it says "installing." so i click cancel, and i'm right where i started. I have never encountered a program that starts "installing" when i hit the "unintall" option. I've looked for an answer elsewhere, and I have only seen how to disable it or how   annoying avg is for being sneaky. I just want it off my computer--any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys,

Someone posted a helpful link to the avg website which tells you how you how to remove avg from your search bar. Can't find it but a simple search should take you you that page.

Anyway, to remove avg search from your default page you should open a new tab. Now you will land on the default avg search page but in the top right hand corner of the page there should be an open to "restore default homepage." Click on that link and uncheck the box to use your prior default homepage settings. Click ok and then close and reopen chrome. It should work.

Hey guys, had this problem.  Tried everyone's solutions nothing worked, checked out AVG's website and they said you need to use IE to be able to uninstall it, even if you use Chrome or FireFox.  It worked eventually, took about 4 tries, the uninstall program and all my browsers kept crashing.  Eventually the crap uninstalled itself.  So these fixes work just need to be done in IE.  Cheers. Re: how to remove avg secure search engine skunther1 4/15/13 12:58 PM
Wow, after hours on the phone with AVG support I have finally found the solution.  Insidiously disguised but simple.  When you open a new tab in Chrome, and the page is redirected to mysearch.avg.com, on the top right of the window there is a link labeled "Restore default new tab"  Click that link, uncheck the box, click okay.  Finally I have my freakin browser back from AVG!
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Devon O'Meara 4/15/13 7:50 PM

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Michael Rivest 4/20/13 1:00 PM

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine jallenmorris 4/26/13 3:37 PM
If you go to extensions and nothing is there, you go to settings and nothing is there, and if you go to the Control Panel>Remove Software and don't see the software program, then restart your computer and it might show up. That is how I was finally able to find the program and get it removed. AVG search sucks. AVG free virus scanning, not so bad, but that's how I got this little gem in the first place.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Steve Gottschalk 4/29/13 11:04 PM

I found this link http://www.avg.com/ww-en/faq.num-5200 and everything cleared itself up. If you go down to "AVG Toolbar Remover", download the link and accept the licence agreement, your browser should revert back to whatever it was before AVG took over.

I found the answer on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reiJLEbiXqw

Hope it helps

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Rachael Billing 5/11/13 7:53 AM
Realise this is an old forum, but to get rid of AVG search go to your control panle, then click "change" on the AVG security software and you can then find your way to "untick" the AVG Toolbar ......... this I finally figured out after an hour of messing about, very frustrating!
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Seymour Johns 5/14/13 11:03 AM
ok so i just got rid of it you have to open up the page that always pops up no matter what search and at the top right it says something like change default search or something its like the only option top right click it and follow the instructions after you restart chrome it should work

hope it helps i now have google as my search again

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Joshua Crenshaw 5/20/13 8:46 PM
Check to see if there is a process in task manager for vprotect. That seems to stick around after uninstalling AVG.

If it's there, disable it and check your program files to see if AVG toolbar directory still exists.
If so, you should be able to throw it in the trash and chrome should start by its default.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine HipGecko 5/22/13 12:24 PM
OK, I just had the same problem re-appear.

Things that did not work this time:
1.  Settings - On startup - Open the new tab page
2.  Settings - Search - Manage search engines... - (remove all but Google)
3.  Settings - Extensions - delete AVG stuff
4.  Searching for setting in AVG software windows (not found)

Thing that worked (Windows XP):
1.  Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add Remove Programs - REMOVE AVG Safe Search.

I hope this helps.  Damn this was frustrating.

Easy way- go to AVG and download removal tool.

But it is annoying that they keep f..ing up the browser.  Again and again.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Halifmike 5/24/13 9:39 AM
This was the only thing that worked for me.  I think I wasted several hours off and on trying different things.  This is not a Chrome problem - it's companies like AVG trying to get their search engines included in unsuspecting users browsers, and using methods that make it very difficult for the average user to figure out.  It's an unethical marketing practice, and I do hope Google takes AVG to task over it, or implements something that stops these companies from commandeering the New Tab!

I had the same problem. If you are using Windows, go to your control panel. Then go to uninstall programs. From there type AVG to your search bar. Uninstall the AVG program that was virused into your computer. Afterwards, you should have no problem with Chrome.

finally, went into the control panel and changed the AVG antivirus software that had a duplicate of that darn toolbar program imbedded inside it

The default search is set to google.ca but the URL in the box leads to AVG. Won't let me delete it or add google.com as a new default.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine cornellvia 5/27/13 12:29 PM
I think the main problem is that most of these people are really experiencing a problem with Chrome. It is an external software issue. When they use AVG on their computers, AVG installs a "AVG Toolbar" that automatically sets the search engine to the AVG page. Regardless of any changes they make in Chrome, the external "Toolbar" keeps sending them to the AVG search site. If they just uninstall the toolbar from windows, the problem will cease.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Drew J. 5/28/13 8:13 AM
I've seen a number of comments on this thread, but none have touched on the Plug-ins as far as I can see. I have somehow managed to get AVG installed on my computer, have uninstalled it from Windows and Chrome, but it still comes back. Manage your Plug-ins under Chrome Settings and disable it. So far it seems to have quelled the AVG storm.

Settings > Show Advanced Settings > Privacy Content Settings > Plug-ins Manage Exceptions > Disable AVG*

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine OlallaHouse 5/28/13 11:37 AM
A few issues with this,
1.  I don't have a wrench but three dashes.
2.  I have done all the steps of removing ANY AVG references in Settings.  Every reference says Google as the default.
3.  On closing and re-opening Chrome I still get the AVG Search engine.

NONE of these options work for me and I was able to get AVG out of Explorer so it seems to be a Chrome issue.  How about a registry setting?

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Danielle H 5/31/13 10:41 AM
Typically, the AVG Secure Search is an Extension that you can disable.

However, with the most recent AVG Update, it slipped by me and installed itself as AVG Security Toolbar or whatever, as IT'S OWN PROGRAM.

I had to go to Control Panel > Uninstall Program and then Uninstall AVG Security Toolbar Manually.

Also, AVG.com's directions on how to uninstall are out of date.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Danielle H 5/31/13 10:43 AM
The three dashes are the "new" toolbar. Uninstall it from Control Panel > Uninstall Program.

So, you will not be managing this from Chrome at all.

Start Menu > Control Panel > Uninstall Program > AVG Security Toolbar or whatever... something "AVG" "Toolbar"

Then, they "recommend" disabling the Toolbar but continuing to use AVG Secure Search.

Click the option below that to get rid of it all, or you'll be stuck with the AVG Secure Search.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Lottie Brookes 5/31/13 1:47 PM
The only thing that i'm having trouble with here is the fact that when you go
Wrench > Settings > Search > Manage Search Engines > Default Search Settings
After all that, how do you add another search engine to it, because for some reason I only have AVG Secure Search and it wont let me add my desired search engine, so how am I supposed change it and get rid of AVG Secure Search!! >:|

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Vada Carey 6/9/13 4:47 PM
All you have to do is go to the control panel on the start menu. Next you go to add or remove programs then delete avg search!! I also had this problem until my sister told me about deleting things like this :)
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Tommy Corcoran 6/10/13 11:59 AM
None of this stuff works.  Downloaded the uninstaller, changed my settings, ticked off AVG extensions and tried it all.  Still when I opened a new tab, AVG was in my face.  You have to go into your control panel and uninstall the AVG tool bar.  It finally worked and it's the only thing that worked.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine mohitmayank 6/12/13 5:49 AM
Go to:
Control Panel > Programs and Features

Uninstall: AVG Security Toolbar.

P.S.: Select the option to remove the search bar, instead of keeping them.

You're done.

Worked fine for me when I just uninstalled the whole thing via my control panel. It ripped my entire broswer out though... Took away my theme and broke all the icons for my extensions and apps >:c

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Jack Groome 7/13/13 11:58 PM
This method is not working for me!  AVG Secure Search is in one place on my PC: the programs folder.  There is nothing left in Google Chrome and it still won't stop opening on new tab pages!  I deleted it from my Extensions, restored Google as the default search engine, and am using my own specified home pages.  There is no AVG in Chrome and it won't go away.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Joshua Crenshaw 7/14/13 9:42 AM
Check to see if there is a process in task manager for vprotect. That seems to stick around after uninstalling AVG.
If it's there, disable it and check your program files to see if AVG toolbar directory still exists.

This thing is horrific. It installed when I downloaded WinZip EVEN THOUGH I unchecked the box to download AVG toolbar. You guys are akin to running a virus...wasted 30 minutes of my time at work this morning getting rid of it. I used to like your product, but will not recommend it anymore...Thanks and Happy Monday! Nice way to treat your customers.

I just had exactly the same experience (declined install, it did anyway, ruined the morning at work etc).  The only difference is that it's thursday.

If AVG isn't malware, and CNET a malware distributor by hiding it in legit installs, I don't know what is.

although I must say that tool wasn't easy to find
and AVG had overridden the Google new tab behaviours

disgraceful behaviour from AVG  - will choose kaspersky over AVG I do think

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine John R. Aberle 7/26/13 11:31 PM

I just posted the following comment on my G+ posts: "In an age when customers are wanting more control over their lives than ever, it is so frustrating to have AVG Secure Search show up on Chrome and not be able to remove it. Problems with Firefox in their latest versions have turned me back to using Chrome as my preferred browser. But not being able to remove this AVG secure search is enough to chase me off. I may have to go back to IE. I've gone to "Manage search engines" and deleted AVG there. I went to "Appearance" where it shows www.google.com for my home button. The only thing left are Extensions. Is this something Alexa Traffic Rank would add or SEOquake in such a way that I can't get back to Google.com as my home page?"
This answer was good and helpful, but somewhat dated as Chrome like everything Google is a moving target meaning that they have changed things, like how to get to Settings. By the way, I turned off the Alexa extension and rebooted - still getting AVG. I turned Alexa back on and turned off SEOQuake. When I rebooted, AVG was still there. So I've turned SEOQuake back on. I am out of ideas of how to get rid of AVG Secure Search so I can return to Google Search for my home page.

I am having the same problem. I have a new computer & suddenly this AVG is in my face too. I uninstalled it & removed it from Chrome. I received the message "sorry to see you go" but I just turned the computer on & it popped up again.

I can't find it in my program files nor is it listed in Chrome so I'm at a loss at how to remove it.

HELP!

Seems like everyone here has tried everything I have as well nobody is able to get rid of it. It's like a fungus that just keeps coming back.

Please provide me with the link so I can find those instructions

Thanks @Stefan vd, for pointing users to the help article about default search engines, and helping users troubleshoot this issue!

Hi folks,
As Stefan vd mentioned, 3rd party programs can sometimes cause unexpected changes/issues. They can make changes to your default browser; change your default search engine, homepage, startup pages, etc. Some of these programs will install other programs/extensions/toolbars that changes your browser's settings instead. If your settings have been changed, please make sure to check the following:

-If AVG search pages are opening up each time you start up Chrome, check in Wrench > Settings > On Startup > next to the radio button for Open a specific page or set of pages, click on Set pages > remove any unwanted URLs by hovering over the URL until you see an "X" appear to the right side of the URL.

-If all searches that you perform in the omnibox is returning with results from AVG search instead of your preferred search engine, check in Wrench > Settings > Search > Manage search engines > check the list of Default search engines, Other search engines, and Search engines added by extensions, and remove suspicious entries that you are not familiar with. Depending on your extensions, you may not see the last section for Search engines added by extensions.

-If AVG search is currently selected as the default search engine, you will have to choose another search engine provider as your default first, and then remove the AVG entry. To select another search engine provider as your default search engine, hover over the search engine until you see "Make Default" appear on the right side. Once you have selected your preferred default search engine, you can remove other entries that you do not want by hovering over the entry until an "X" appears on the right side.

-If AVG is opening up when you click on the Home button, check in Wrench > Settings > Appearance > select the Show Home button checkbox > check if the URL that appears below it references AVG.

Also check that there are no extensions installed that may be causing these changes.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine nedraspyro 8/27/13 10:26 AM
Be careful with removing AVG. I gave up & contacted AVG. They had me follow a link to remove it from the hard drive & it not only removed it but it removed all the apps that were associated with it that were bundled when I bought the computer. As a result some very important apps were removed & I had to call ASUS to resolve the problem. The result was that if it's part of a bundle of software & you remove it, it also removes the bundled software which may be important. ASUS had me do a system refresh which removed all the software I installed which caused hours of work not to mention hassles because some software remnants lingered causing us to not be able to re-install it because parts of it were still there & the activation key would not work.

ESET (my antirus program)said they would help me remove it but I'm figuring it might cause more harm again.

I'm still trying to resolve some issues because of following AVG's advise & ESET said I should file a complaint against them. I'm thinking hard about that!

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Emmii May 8/30/13 1:27 PM
I have a solution that worked well for me!
When you click for a New Tab that's normally when AVG Search comes up. If you look closely at the upper right hand corner you will be able to see writing that says 'Restore Default New Tab' you click on that and it should say 'Are you sure you want to restore your new tab page to the default browser settings?' Then click Yes, then it will load a minuet and you will have your New Tab back the way it was :D Hope this helps! :)
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Ibrahim Hmood 9/4/13 5:01 PM
You can uninstall AVG search bar by going to Control Panel>uninstall a program. then you click on it and you left click on it and select uninstall. it will get rid of it for you.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Lucy Gordon 9/6/13 2:55 AM
I have had this problem for months and had switched over completely to Firefox.
Every time I opened Chrome or opened a new tab, I would be redirected to AVG Secure Search. SOOOOO ANNOYING!!!
But I have figured out the solution! I haven't seen it written anywhere else on these forums so thought I'd post, in case it helps someone :)

Here's what didn't work:
1. Changing my default search engine in the Chrome Settings page. When I went to check, it was already google.co.nz, not isearch.avg.com. In fact, I could find neither AVG nor isearch anywhere on the list of search engines on the settings tab.

2. Changing my start up page on the Chrome Settings page. I tried all three options available there, including setting a specific start up page. When I did this, the page would open for about one second when I first started up Chrome, then AVG would take over and I'd be back to isearch.avg.com. Grr.

3. Deleting the AVG Security Toolbar extension from Chrome. I went and looked at my list of extensions and it wasn't there. I discovered it was actually a separate program, able to be removed via the Windows control panel.

3. Deleting AVG Security Toolbar program from Windows. I didn't do this actually because I wanted to keep the web security part of AVG Secure Searcg. I have had no problems with it when using Firefox, and in fact when using it there I have had it block a couple of dangerous web pages, so I was keen to keep the protection. Also I use AVG Free anti virus and have found that to be pretty good, so I was sure there must be a better solution.

And, drum roll please... here's what worked...
1. Go to the AVG Secure Search page (shouldn't be too hard... lol)

2. There's a tiny link at the top right hand side that says something like 'return to browser default new tab'. Click yes.

3. A message will come up telling you that the changes will take effect after you restart Chrome. This is not true. If you try restarting your browser now, you will get annoyed because yet again, AVG Secure Search will take over Chrome.

4. What you actually need to do is go back to the Chrome Settings page. Below the Settings link on the left, click Help. (Alternatively you can access this page by going to Wrench/3 horizontal bars icon at the top of Chrome and then clicking About Google Chrome.

5. You will see a little message telling you that Google Chrome is not up to date and that a restart is required. Click the button to restart. It took Chrome a minute or so to restart when I did this.

6. Watch in awe as your desired home page loads, unencumbered by AVG Secure Search's stranglehold!!!

7. Open a new tab and watch in awe again as your new tab loads without even the slightest hint of interference from AVG Secure Search!! Yay!!!

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Dirk Hill 9/13/13 4:50 PM
Once I used the settings in Chrome to clear out the search engines of all but google/yahoo/bing. Close Chrome. I went to the control panel/uninstall a program selected AVG 2013 then clicked on change. Click "Next" until I got to the page with the search engine on it. Uncheck the 3 boxes at the bottom then clicked "Next".  Chrome pops up with a "sad to see you go" page. Close it. Let it finish and AVG is gone from Chrome!

I did not have this problem until the very last update from AVG.  It did not ask me if I wanted to have it's search engine installed, just popped up with "Your system needs a reboot."

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Juan Solis 9/15/13 3:42 PM
I had the same issue and the problem is the AVG Secure Toolbar.  First exit completely from Google Chrome, then go to Control Panel-> Uninstall A Program-> Right click on AVG and select Change-> On Add/Remove Features from the setup select Change-> Click Next(DO NOT CHANGE THE LICENSE KEY)-> Click Next again->  Uncheck AVG Toolbar and AVG Secure Search(the only checkbox should be to accept the terms of the AVG End User License Agreement, but some installation setups might not have it) then click next.  Let the installation setup configure your machine and load up Google Chrome and AVG Secure Search should be out of your machine.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Bill Driesslein 9/16/13 4:31 PM
ANSWER:
I Uninstalled AVG, the same issue remained.  I went through Explorer and deleted the AVG Folder.

Then tried to delete the AVG Safeguard Toolbar folder, but could not, so started deleting sub-folders and files one at a time.  All could be deleted EXCEPT a small program called "vprot", as it was running.  Used the old Ctrl-Alt-Delete and had Task Manager end the process.  Then I could remove the VIRUS.

Then I used RegEdit to find and remove all references to vprot, including the command to Start it at startup.

Definitely an Virus installed by AVG.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Josh Falter 9/17/13 7:37 AM
I tried everything in Chrome and nothing worked.  Then I went to the Registry...

I searched for anything that contained 'mysearch.avg.com'.  Each entry I found I removed the top most container that referenced that AVG bullshit install.  I think there were about 3 places that I had to delete.  Now my Chrome works just the way I want and AVG still does my desktop security.  Voila!

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Steve Leither 9/24/13 5:37 PM
Found this by docqualizer

In Chrome 22 (not sure if this applies to prior versions), there are additional steps you need to take to remove AVG Secure Search.

1. Click on the Customize button in the upper right.
2. Click on "Settings"
3. In the "On Startup" section, there is an option "Open a specific page or set of pages". Next to that is a highlighted option "Set Pages". Single left click on that option.
4. You should see the AVG Secure Search page as an entry in that box below what you have for a home page. Find the "x' button at the right and single left click on it. That entry will disappear.
5. Single Left click on OK.
6. Close the Settings tab.
7. Close Chrome and then reopen it.

You should have only your home page at this point.  wink

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Ono T 9/24/13 6:03 PM
I clicked on Google settings. Go down to Search. Click on manage search engines. Place mouse arrow over AVG search. When the make default or X appears. Click on the X. AVG goes bye bye.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Marmem 10/4/13 2:20 PM
It installed itself on my computer via an apparent Logitech product questionnaire. It appeared as a popup when I turned on my computer, not in my email. I saw the deliberately small, unobtrusive message about AVG at the bottom and declined everything including taking the questionnaire. I then found it had installed itself on my computer anyways. I think this is criminal. I could not even find it in Add/Remove Programs and no uninstall tool not does it show up (at least as "AVG") in the Control Panel Programs.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine MG1978 10/4/13 5:37 PM
Agreed. Chrome needs to have a setting to block apps from changing your search provider.  Shouldn't be that hard, actually.  Just stop letting apps hijack the search provider in Chrome.  I don't think anyone has EVER actually WANTED some program they installed to change their default search engine.  It happens a lot and everyone complains.  Google should just put a lock we, the users, can turn on at will and stop it permanently.

Only comment is that the link to 'browser default new tab' is now at the BOTTOM right hand side of the AVG search page, not at the top.  I almost missed it as I wasn't looking there

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine james yeomans 10/11/13 1:06 PM
okay its very simple. open a new tab, when avg pops up there is a little camouflaged (i wonder why) grey link that says "restore default new tab settings" restart chrome and voila.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine nob 21 10/14/13 6:18 AM
If you are still having problems with AVG Secure Search, I finally found the solution. When you open a new tab, AVG gives you the option to restore the default New tab. The option is on the upper right corner of the page and it says "Restore default new tab". You click on it and the it will ask you "Are you sure you want to restore your new tab page to the default browser settings?" and you click on yes. The changes will occur once you restart Chrome. It totally worked for me.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Anita Knapp 10/14/13 9:40 AM
Even though this is an old thread, thought I would post this here for anyone frustrated with this recently:

NONE OF THESE ANSWERS WILL WORK. When you open a new tab it will still do an AVG secure search with Yahoo no matter what you set or delete in Chrome. You have to actually go to your control panel, uninstall programs, then uninstall the toolbar there. Next time you open Chrome & do a new tab it will say "Sorry to see you go."

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Adam Granville 10/14/13 10:00 AM
Hey I found out how to do it 100% guarantee! Go to your windows icon in the bottom left corner of your screen and go to control panel. Then find programs -> Uninstall a program. Open that up and you should then see the AVG Secure Search Toolbar. Uninstall that; you're now good to go. Please no Mozilla!! lol hope this works
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Joshua Crenshaw 10/14/13 10:36 AM
I've had this problem on a few machines now and this seems to be the best fix:

Check to see if there is a process in task manager for vprotect. That seems to stick around after uninstalling AVG.
If it's there, disable it and check your program files to see if AVG toolbar directory still exists.

I was going to buy a Chromebook until this hijack infection fron nowhere.  One just has to view the number of resolutions posted, how many didn't resolve the problem to conclude Google's support is no match for Apple or MS
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine caver_tim 10/14/13 4:22 PM
except of course yuou don't need anti virus on a chromebook, so you won't have AVG installing their crapware on your PC
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Lucky BTt 10/16/13 7:47 AM
When you unclick ok, go to Restart immediately. Do not press finish. This is the only thing that has worked.
AVG hides everywhere, found them under Appearance once in the Control Panel. Thanks

Hi! To anyone that is experiencing the same problem with AVG suddenly appearing, Sie_Deen outlined it perfect on what-to-do! Except I went through the problem today, which was a while from when Sie_Deen posted the help, and I was confused as to what the "wrench" was. In case no one had mentioned already the wrench, as I have learned, is now the (≡) symbol next to the URL search box.Use this with Sie_Deen's info! Hope this helps! :)
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine rr1024 10/24/13 6:58 AM
All you have to do is click the
wrench settings -> On Startup -> Set Pages

Send a message to AVG that you will never use their crap software again, also send a message to Yahoo saying you will never use their search engine because they are trying to STEAL People away from google which is unethical and immoral, it shows that neither YAHOO NOR AVG HAS ANY ETHICS. AFTER ALL it is AVG & YAHOO'S fault just like when Microsoft does the same thing with Bing.

The reason why this is happening is because the xgoogle employee moved to yahoo as the CEO and yahoo made a deal with AVG to piss off all the chrome uses in hopes we would be too stupid to figure out what these scumbags were doing....

Ok guys, I found a way to completely get rid of AVG. I repeat, I ACTUALLY GOT RID OF AVG!! It was actually really simple. I don't know how it works in other computers (i'm running windows 7) but this is what I did. You just have to go to the control panel and click on programs. Then click 'uninstall program' and it will bring you to a list of all of your programs. Find the one with the word AVG (there may be more than one) and right click and hit delete. Then, it should bring you to a page making sure you want to uninstall it. Just hit yes for all of those, and BAM! it's gone. I am sooo happy I found this method.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Joshua Arnold 10/28/13 6:46 AM
I had the same issue, but ended up having to go into Programs and Features and uninstall the AVG SafeGuard Toolbar that apparently installed in the background when I installed another application. Have to love those. :) Hope that may help someone else if none of these tips did.

Thanks!

Work for me!
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine dan snow 11/8/13 7:43 PM
I switched also.  I tried several different methods.  I believe it may be stuck in my online back up.  Until google comes up with a fix, I have deleted chrome from all my devices.  I tried deleting extensions and changing default search engine settings.  The stupid thing still came back.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Beny Alonso 11/12/13 6:35 AM
Go to the computer, find uninstall or change a programm, then you type AVG in right corner what is up (I don't know English very well, but I think you will understand me) then you will find one programm, then you double-click on it, and clik ok, or yes, or next, just finish it, and you will have your normal browser (google chrome)
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine tiyana knittel 11/12/13 9:01 PM
I tried all of the options, and it says avg is deleted but it keeps appearing when I open a new tab or click the home button. Any ideas on why it's not working?
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Joshua Crenshaw 11/12/13 9:47 PM
Check to see if there is a process in task manager for vprotect. That seems to stick around after uninstalling AVG.
If it's there, disable it and check your program files to see if AVG toolbar directory still exists.
If so, you should be able to throw it in the trash and chrome should start by its default.

How to remove AVG Search from Google Chrome

Doesn't matter if you change the settings in Google Chrome AVG Search comes back again as default search engine. It is not a settings problem, its actually a program or application called AVG Secured Search that you need to unistall.

For Windows users, go to Control Panel, Programs and Features, find AVG Secure Search and unistall it. Problem solved!

For Mac users, open the Applications folder, select the icon for AVG Secure Search  and drag it to the Trash bin. Hope this will help!

avg is sooo bad, i'm been trying to remove it from my search engine, is not going why ?
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine M. Rattner 1/12/14 4:24 PM
AVG must have read your good advice, because now that little "Restore default new tab" link on the AVG search page is gone.  I am going to completely re-set my browser, and if that doesn't work, I will stop using Chrome entirely.  HATE HATE HATE AVG! So unethical.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Jeffrey Sullivan 1/27/14 3:53 PM
What the hell is wrong with all of you??? Are you blind? This is an intrusive and malicious practice! It is fraud! I uninstalled this thing twice and it said it was sad to see me go! What is the definition of malware? I think a program that installs itself on your computer without your knowledge and will not let you get rid of it satisfies me as criminally invasive. "Safe Search" my A** This is ridiculous and I am going to start a blog and a class action lawsuit with the obviously alarming number of people who have been raped by these pigs. What information are they gathering from your systems? Where is it going? THIS IS CRAP! I assure you my website will not use such tact and restraint in finding out why these jackasses are getting away with this. It seems that most find a solution with the AVG uninstall tool, it's their tool morons! Your now freely giving them access to your entire digital life. Best of luck.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Jeffrey Sullivan 1/27/14 4:02 PM
I would also like to point out that you cannnot SPEAK to anyone at this company and there is no way to contact a human being to speak to. At the very least they are greedy bullies and I feel sorry for all of you sheeple who are simply OK with thinking that this is some sort of technical glitch with your browsers. Sad!
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Marmem 1/27/14 4:46 PM
After finally getting rid of all of it I downloaded and used a free adware removal and cleaning file I downloaded based on another's suggestions and it found even more files, even though they had not been actively bothering me. I did a complete removal using that tool and now there is nothing. In future, we all need to watch very carefully before downloading anything online. Read everything and choose the selective install because it is there where one needs to deselect all these add-ons. On really bad sites even that won't help. I was about to download something when I noticed it said I would also be downloading two other item so I clicked "cancel." Too late...the first thing the program did was install those items (very intrusive ones) even though I didn't take the download and cancelled it. The adware cleaner got rid of those also. I spent hours cleaning and rebooting to get rid of it all. Also, I've found some sites that mimic the "real" site in order to trick us to download from their site. I would check the "real" http address before doing the download.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine ZshaPooks 1/29/14 6:20 PM
Don't you mean "HKEY_CURRENT_USER"?
I don't know...I would suggest 'renaming' the "AVG" folder first.
Making changes to the Registry Editor can be risky...
Just sayin'...
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Fernando_Pietchaki 1/31/14 7:46 AM
In my case, I like to reopen previous tabs on start up, but, every time I closed the last tab and reopen chrome, it loaded the F&%#$@ avg page.
I'v followed various "set homepage" and "remove avg from chrome" and nothing worked. I also uninstalled avg from the computer and all the extensions from chrome.

Finally, someday I clicked on "setting -> appearance -> show 'homepage' button" and it showed me that the homepage was AVG. Removed that and its all OK now.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Alec Le 2/27/14 2:40 PM
hello, to delete avg from appearing on chrome startup page do the following;
1. uninstall avg and its toolbar
2. go to chrome then settings under settings there is ''sign in'' then click on ''sign in to chrome''
3. use a gmail account to ''sign in to chrome''
4. after connecting the gmail account with chrome, remove/delete the account
5. your new startup page will be gmail but hit the ''skip this'' below the gmail sign-in page inorder to get back to google.com as your startup page.

to remove avg's search engine, just manually fix it under settings then omnibox
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Jonathan Wetherbee 2/28/14 11:29 AM
This was really helpful!

I had some lingering issues afterwards and had to go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Uninstall and change programs on your computer.

From there, I deleted all of the programs that had just been uploaded as a package: Opera, AVG, Protect Search, and others.

More generally, you can use that to get rid of unnecessary programs.
Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Sandra Leigh 3/1/14 2:27 PM
what if I'm not using Chrome?
just plain old Firefox

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine Jonathan Wetherbee 3/1/14 3:05 PM
If you are on Windows 7, you can go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Uninstall and change programs on your computer.

From there, I deleted all of the programs that had just been uploaded as a package: Opera, AVG, Protect Search, and others.

This worked for me because it wasn't the just Google Chrome that was affected. Rather, it was any browser that I tried to use. I had to get rid of a program called "Protect Search" or "Search Browser Protect" or something like that.

I'm sure someone could help translate this for you if you are using Win8.

Re: how to remove avg secure search engine dk12938 4/14/14 12:31 AM
Going through programs to deinstall I saw the avg toolbar (which till that day had never been used) , I uninstalled the toolbar and from that day on it decided to become very active taking over the omnibox & default search. It complely removed google as a search provider, so i had to go look up what the search string was to add as a new browser. Then when I thought I had followed as many tutorials as I could to remove their crap I log back on this morning to see they are now back. They have taken over the omnibox again and when I go to setting its says google is the default search engine. And I have no reports of malware!
