|AVG Secure Search Removal||jamesf90||6/3/12 6:10 AM|
I installed Power ISO on my PC and during the installation it silently installed AVG Security Tool Bar & also changed my homepage when first opening Chrome. Now I removed every aspect of the toolbar but cant undo the opening homepage. I tried resetting the homepage but no luck. I use Google sync between PC's and it has the same thing happening with the homepage. I have attached two pictures to show the page appearing.

|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||jamesf90||6/3/12 6:36 AM|
Just tried and no luck thanks though. I'm 100% positive that it is inside Chrome and Sync since its appearing in across my other Chrome.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||timmmy_42||6/3/12 6:39 AM|
What happens when you try adn set your homepage as something else? Also are you sure you removed all the extensions/plugins it may have installed, check about:plugins and about:extensions
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Douglas Alves||6/3/12 6:44 AM|
You use the sync on more than one computer ?
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||jamesf90||6/3/12 6:54 AM|
when I set the homepage to google.com it works, but when I first launch Chrome it goes to the AVG Secure Search and yes its completely off extensions and the pc. So that's what I'm thinking its something in the Sync. Thanks for the help
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||jamesf90||6/3/12 6:55 AM|
yes I use it at 4 computers and one VM.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Douglas Alves||6/3/12 7:05 AM|
Thanks for the feedback
Possibly this "plague" (avg) is still installed on one of the four computers you use and are making some changes to Chrome paca that automatically changes for the other browsers that are not being synchronized. I suggest you do a test, disable the sync three computers and make the changes only ne one and see if the problem still persists.
Sorry if it fails to interpret a paste of the text, because I'm using Google Translator

|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Craig Long||6/4/12 4:00 PM|
Did you go to Wrench > Settings > On startup to "set pages" for the Homepage?
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Toni (Googler)||6/4/12 4:03 PM|
Can you make sure you've all tried the following?
1. Go to wrench > Settings > Under "Search," click "Manage search engines." Delete "AVG Secure Search" and change your default search engine back to "Google" or another search engine.
2. Go to wrench > Tools > Extensions. Remove the "AVG Internet Security" extension
3. Go to wrench > Settings > On startup. Next to the option "Open a specific page or set of pages," click on "Set pages" button and then just click on the X to remove the AVG one.
4. If you have a homepage button next to your address bar, go to wrench > Settings. Under "Appearance," click on "Change" under the Show Home Buttom. Enter your desired homepage URL.
5. Uninstall the AVG Security Toolbar by going to your operating system's Start menu > Control Panel > Programs and Features (thanks Craig!)

Number 1 worked for me! THANKS A MILLION!
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||jda||6/5/12 6:31 AM|
also worked for me. the only place i haven't been able to get rid of it is on my google chrome homepage. every time i close then reopen, it comes back.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||jda||6/5/12 6:56 AM|
finally got avg out of my system thanks to toni. if it comes back again, i'll return to this stream and let you know.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||jda||6/5/12 7:06 AM|
opened an closed several apps and avg is still gone
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||MEG65||6/7/12 11:38 AM|
This thing is a virus. You can't uninstall it from the machine and it actually spreads through Google sync. Now I've had to disconnect from Google sync completely :-(
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||TiriPon||6/8/12 7:57 AM|
I know this issue seems to be solve but I don't see any explanation on why this happened.
AVG is a free and a commercial product. They will make more money if you purchase the product and will try to trick you to be as visible as possible.
Be very careful when installing AVG. You want to make sure you do a custom installation and that you carefully uncheck the AVG toolbar and widget options.
If you have already installed it with the toolbar, you will have to uninstall AVG and re-install it. There is no other way I know of to remove the toolbar or widget.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||jamesf90||6/8/12 11:27 AM|
it was installed through "other means"... by passing Google Chrome's settings without user knowledge and this Discussion is now closed for me since now its resolved. And it is a a complete virus.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||cheeku2143||6/8/12 11:11 PM|
I tried the 3rd option and it really worked. thanks again for helping me...

|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Morely||6/10/12 6:19 AM|
I had the exact same problem, however once I followed Toni (Googler) response step #3 in Toni's suggestion did the trick. I followed step #3 on all my computers and now everything is fine... Thank you so much Toni. Greatly appreciated.

This is what worked for me...
I reached the same conclusion pretty much independently through trial and error.
I filled out their feedback form that popped up after uninstalling it too!

|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||sugarspice20||6/12/12 11:19 AM|
Okay I had the same problem with this stupid search engine. No matter what I did I just couldn't get rid of it. I don't even remember ever installing the thing. It must have come with something else I installed onto my computer.
Anyway here's how I got rid of it.
1. Click the wrench at the corner of your browser
Hope that helped, it worked for me, after trying everything else there is. :) I was finally able to get rid of it.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||russian16||6/23/12 8:05 PM|
i figured out a way to simply delete it without any programs i just did it. open google chrome and you will see the avg search engine of course, in the right hand corner of your google chrome select the settings tab which is a symbol of a small black wrench tool in the corner, click that and scroll and click to settings, after going to settings you will see the settings option and you will see an option about which search engine you use and if ran off of google chromes original home page without specific settings select google as your search engine, if you installed a different search engine for your home page select it from the list, your settings are complete and you may open a new tab and look! (note unistall avg from your computer before doing this)

|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||dowtchaboy||7/11/12 2:49 PM|
Thanks Toni - #3 worked.
By the way - I got this when I installed DriverMax downloaded from CNET. It tried to install AVG as my home page and preferred search engine. I killed it - or so I thought. 2 hours later AVG turns up as my home page (replacing iGoogle) and my preferred search engine on 2 other machines - a Ubuntu system and a MacBook due to Chrome sync.
(my apologies - earlier I had a brain-fart and mistakenly attributed this virus-like behaviour to Glary Utilities - it was NOT Glary - it was DriverMax)
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||fidzer||7/22/12 4:06 AM|
Thanks Toni, option 3 worked for me. This has been driving me insane fro a few weeks now.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||technoleads||8/16/12 11:59 AM|
Hi jamesf90 go to chrome setting page ....
go to Open a specific page or set of pages. Set pages option under on start up
click set pages and remove the unwanted pages that opens when you start up your chrome..................Cheer bud!!!!!
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Camaroooo||9/7/12 4:11 AM|
Just found perfect solution. Since its not possible to uinstall "AVG Secure Search" just go to "My Computer" press F3, search for "AVG Secure Search" and delete all the files that appear in your search screen. Its the best way to get rid of that virus.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||stevecontip||10/10/12 7:28 PM|
I've tried all of those things, and whenever I close out Chrome, and open it back up, AVG Secure Search is back! There is not trace of AVG on my computer (I've deleted everything) and I've reinstalled Chrome twice.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal--FIX||insomniacle||10/19/12 9:50 PM|
This was already mentioned by sugarspice20 above but let me re-illustrate:
Open chrome and go to google.com (do not be on the AVG search page when you do this)
1.In chrome, go to the top right-hand corner where there re 3 horizontal lines.
2.Select "Settings" from the list which will open settings section in a new tab.
3.Under the main heading of Settings at the top, there are sub-headings. The second one down is (should be)called "On Startup"
4.There are three choices below this, the bottom one, "Open a specific page..." should presently be selected. Next to this should be a link for "Set pages", click this and it will open a small window called "Startup pages".
5.In this box you should see the AVG startup page. Simply go over it with your mouse, highlighting it,and click the X to the right to delete it. ***SET A NEW START PAGE (I.E. GOOGLE.COM) ONCE YOU'VE DELETED THE AVG PAGE***
6. Click OK, bringing you back to the Settings section. ***Now MAKE SURE that last choice is still filled in!***
7. Close and reopen Chrome.
It should now be gone.
Hope that worked for you. ***If it didn't then you do have some instance of it running on the PC.

This worked like a charm! The plague is gone!
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Kevin Joseif||2/17/13 1:00 PM|
You have no freaking idea how much I I appreciate your comment! I removed the avg program, tool bar, home page, and search engine type. But still when I open chrome it was still there! NO ONE anywhere knew how to get rid of it on start up THANK YOU!
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||richard coto||2/18/13 10:07 PM|
Delete the entire "Default" folder and everything in it, this will include your bookmarks so back up your bookmarks FIRST. You will have to re-install Chrome extensions afterward as well.
I have tried everything in this thread elsewhere but still couldn't get rid of this infection, but deleting the "default" folder did the trick, including being able to synch to my google account just fine without the infection.
The "AppData" folder may be hidden so you have to enable "show hidden folders\files" in your Windows settings.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||stevecontip||2/20/13 8:08 AM|
Thank you, Richard Coto, hero of the internet helpboard wasteland. Everyone else in this, and other message boards kept repeating the same tired bullshit that did nothing to help. But you, you magnificent bastard, have saved the day for all those who were ready to mail shattered computer pieces to AVG until they stopped being awful.
I wish I could upvote this 100 times, and delete all the other answers.

|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Sara Fassione||4/8/13 7:14 PM|
I had to do everything Toni said plus one more thing. When I opened a new tab it was still AVG. If you let that AVG page load, look on the top right corner and it allows you to restore your "new tab" default page. Click on the link, un-check the box, apply the change and restart Google Chrome.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Joey Betz||5/14/13 1:58 PM|
I've changed from my old Dell to a Mac and I have been having the same problems. What I did was;
Settings>On Start Up>Open a Specific Page or Set of Pages>Delete AVG Secure Search
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Bill Sorenson||5/21/13 3:37 AM|
Worked - thank you!
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Lauren.Smith||6/22/13 9:26 AM|
I deleted everything AVG related out of my settings like some of the comments above, I found where it had downloaded in my "Downloads" Folder on my computer and deleted it there. None of that worked. Finally I Went to the Control Panel and Uninstalled anything AVG from my computer. That is what FINALLY got this program off my laptop.
|Re: AVG Secure Search Removal||Tatum Schmitt||9/11/13 12:10 PM|
how do you do that
