This has happened before, no idea why it happens.
Delete the file you just downloaded and re-download it should then work.

Just downloaded great
unfortunally some of the placemarkes with coloured type no longer work?
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Noisette||4/16/08 11:11 AM|
Can you give an example MM? I found one example where the background colour had turned black so the black text wasn't visible. The file has been changed now and a new version uploaded to the post, but the placemarks in the community layer still display wrongly. I reported the issue, but I don't know whether it's incorrect coding in the placemarks or a bug in 4.3.
I had problems with the download on one of my PCs, if anyone else is having problems, just keep trying, my experience was it may take several tries, but you do get it eventually.

|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Noisette||4/16/08 12:03 PM|
Thanks. It's the names of the colours that aren't working. And some of it didn't work as it should in 4.2 either. Look at this page, the background is burleywood. Even in 4.2 I see the background as black in your placemarks.
I'd really recommend that you use a colour chart, if you search, you'll find a lot of examples, here's just one:
So, if you want a black background: <body bgcolor="#000000">
Blue text: <font color="#151B8D">
You shouldn't get any surprises then.
You can also use this KML color code converter from rsgrillo, choose the colour you want, and then use the html code which you see in the list on the right. BBS post.

|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Geve Narielwalla||4/16/08 10:18 PM|
I downloaded 4.3 some two hours now and found the download time was much shorter than before.
dont know why but this version minimises and maximises without more fuss, and placemarks open much faster from 'my places.'
but the photorealistic 3D buildings tool is still far from giving a realistic likeness of the buildings.
the new tool to maximise sunlight and time of day is fine.............but the most unexpected experience is that some places, which were very clear in high resolution, are now somehow dark although one tries the best to adjust the new daylight tool...............
whilst Mumbai is exceptionally clear .............I found Dubai and Auckland rather dark even after adjusting the new daylight /time tool.............any reasons?
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||lockhopper||4/17/08 4:27 PM|
I've been out all day and finally got home around 11.30. Downloaded 4.3 (quickly with no problems) and have had no other problems so far. Really need to go to bed but must have a quick lap round the street view again.

|Re: Google Earth 4.3||ploppy||4/18/08 4:58 AM|
I have Downloaded the new update and it looks brilliant.
I have one problem though and judging by the replies and the lack of any similar problem post I must be doing something wrong.
Can you help please.
I can only get the YouTube links to work in the placemark bubbles,any other links do not work.
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||tekgergedan||4/18/08 6:08 AM|
I did not check but there was a statement somewhere in Reference pages that only Flash movies were supported while, at the same time, other formats were working. It seems the other formats are not stable (perhaps, causing some side effects) and they do not guarantee that full support.
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||ploppy||4/18/08 9:13 AM|
Thank you for your reply.
I was hoping not to have to uninstall GE,but I will have a look at my settings and give it another try.

Just installed 4.3.....No problem's whatsoever except trying to come to term's with the new control's but that may just be the scotch......It's a bit like learning to fly all over again......Great job guy's.
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Noisette||4/18/08 9:37 AM|
Hi ploppy, which browser are you using? There has been a report of this happening, but it depends on the default browser. Can you try setting IE as default and see what happens then?
I use Opera as default, and I find that GE insists on opening links in a new IE window (not a new tab, a new window ). I get the same behaviour if I set Firefox or IE7 as default. Others report that Firefox works perfectly. As you say, clicking the youtube video to open the youtube page works, but not other links (I hope I've understood you correctly?).
As a general note to everyone, bugs can he reported in the GE Help Forum, specifically in this thread. You'll need to register with the forum to be able to post.
PS: Frank Taylor mentions this problem here under "Placemarks".
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Noisette||4/18/08 9:42 AM|
Hi Geve, I can't myself see anything wrong with Dubai or Auckland. Do you get the same thing with the sun tool turned off? Here's some more information about it from the user guide: Displaying the sun. Do you have any other layers or overlays enabled which might affect things? Can you post a screenshot?
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Rick_in_Indy||4/18/08 4:50 PM|
I did the upgrade download - several times - now the road numbers have dropped out. Only blank white markers (road signs) with no numbers inside. Some labels are also missing. I did the tools-options thing, and used the sidebar to check whaqt I wanted.
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||tekgergedan||4/18/08 5:00 PM|
This is what I have:
If yours is different, try to clean the cache via the Options.
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Rick_in_Indy||4/18/08 5:09 PM|
Your screen shot is what i'm looking for - but all I get is white circles and symbols - no numbers inside. In the GPS - I do not have all the digitis - 9 seems to be missing.
I saw the bug thread about this but don;t undetrand what it said.
I did clear the cache. Do I need to restart again? I have done that many times. Nothing seems to make a difference. Maybe I will go back to the earlier version.
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Geve Narielwalla||4/18/08 5:29 PM|
here is an image of auckland............but it wont tell you much because I saved the image on my documents, then downloaded it on flickr and then downloaded it here....................how do you send a snapshot view..........I have just not got around to all the features of GE..........
the GE images are sharp but dark.
same image by hosting on photoshack...........just long shadows I suppose
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Rick_in_Indy||4/18/08 6:40 PM|
I uninstalled 4.3 and went back to 4.2 and everyhting is fine once again.
I will stay use 4.2 and not worry about the upgrade.
Thank you for trying to help.
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Normb||4/18/08 7:48 PM|
Add a placemark of the Area that looks dark and I will send a Screen shot of the area.
But to make a screen shot from GE goto File / Save / Save Image
You will still have to save it to My Docs then Host the image..
All of Auckland looks slightly darkish due to shadows.. Have a look at the Sky Tower shadow.
Norm - Christchurch (Under repair - Central city closed :-( - New Zealand.
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Geve Narielwalla||4/19/08 12:44 AM|
have I got you right ? a screenshot view is to............ go to file >>>save image>>>> save to my docs>>>>and then place the image on flickr or photobucket and then include this in the post/reply ..................right?
I use flickr ...........which is a part of my yahoo mail addons and somehow they reduce size of the image...................any better hosting site where the image is kept at the maximum size possible? can panoramio take /allow views of GE ?
to get back to the main point ..........yes, the images appear dark because of shadows.....................I switched off the new sunlight tool but no difference................I suppose one has to get used to this.
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||Normb||4/19/08 1:06 AM|
Check out Image Shack http://www.imageshack.us/ Of course there are several others but I use it and have found no problem with size of image.. Although I like to keep them aroud the 600 x450 size or smaller so that it fits the screen. So you don't have to squint to see the image

|Re: Google Earth 4.3||ed.sterrett||4/19/08 10:25 AM|
You (and others with similar issues) might want to review THIS THREAD for a discussion of DirectX vs OpenGL.
The short of it is that you need to check and verify that you have the latest drivers for your video card in order to use OpenGL - which is the best and preferred mode to use. DirectX will work, but all those great enhancements and "shiny things" you paid for with the card are sitting on the shelf unused unless you are using OpenGL. (OpenGL uses the card's circuitry and RAM to process imagery, while Direct X uses the PC's processor (bypassing the video card), slowing the system somewhat.

|Re: Google Earth 4.3||washi||4/21/08 9:51 PM|
I finally got around to installing GE 4.3. I am experiencing some problems with some of the features. The View in Google Maps button does not seem to work, and in the Help menu, only the Check for Updates Online , Deactivate Google Earth Plus License , and About seem to function. I’m also experiencing a lot of frustration in moving elements in My Places (either by drag and drop or by cut and paste). Not only do they not end up in the place where I intend them, but the place where I am working often moves up or down in the window, and I am looking at completely different folders.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Can anyone suggest a fix?
Just as an aside (because it’s probably there and I just haven’t found it yet) can anyone tell me a one-click method to return to a straight down view from a tilted view?
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||syzygy||4/22/08 1:59 AM|
|Re: Google Earth 4.3||earthgoogler||4/22/08 4:56 AM|
Yep, same here!
Pressing the 'R' key will reset the view to straight down and 'north up'.
To add another bad working feature (or maybe a bug): When I want to rename a folder by clicking 'Rename' in the menu it works like in Windows: The old name stays, but is marked, it will only disapear when I beginn typing, so I am able to change a part of the name without having to re-type the whole name. When I want to rename a placemark the old name disapears as soon as I click 'Rename' so that I have to re-type the whole name. Here are two screenshots taken immediately after clicking 'Rename':
There is another bug: It was possible to rename something by pressing the 'F2' key in older versions . Since GE version 4 this does no longer work correctly. The 'F2' key only works with objects that were already renamed by using the menu before.
