Nice job. Works very well.
I'm curious about your copyright message, though. What, exactly, are you claiming as copyright?
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Kabammie||7/26/05 2:33 PM|
Wow, that's really amazing !!
I love landSat 7 the most. I could even see a more high temperature at the zoo around the corner which has a very large tropical fish tank !
Thanks for this addon, I'll be watching for more.

I saw your company's website, and that is some really nice technology. It's incredible. I looked around more, and it looks like its going to be pricey for the next few years, but it's worth it. I'd love to see a version of google earth running on your machines.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||softmicro||7/27/05 10:02 AM|
Wow. Some moderator should put this on the front page. This is very useful. Too bad it's hidden within the bowels of these forums. Thanks to whoever did this.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Katamari||7/27/05 11:48 AM|
US Navy cloud works, landsat im not sure how you figure out the temp from a black and white image.
Maybe an explanation of these might be helpful.
I search, therefore i am. Hello, Before you post up a new placemark, check it isnt already been posted by a: ticking the box- b:searching the forums, as it might take time for it to appear on the map Look after the BBS!, dont clog up the same placemark unless you have something new to add to it! (like a map)
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Emoshape||7/27/05 12:19 PM|
Well its just an IR band 3 image so goes from black to white depending of the temperature so you can easily process an algo to convert it in temperatures.

|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Emoshape||7/28/05 7:03 AM|
This is out of our control, the US Navy updates the map about every 3 hours and this error could happen if they had a problem with the satellite, so please wait for the next update.

When I am ( for example ) looking at International Airport in Los Angeles.....and I do a bit of zoom.....i get exactly the same image what Microsoft Virtual Earth is using...........
Can u explain it to me......why Google Earth ( with the 3Dsolar add on ) gives the same picture as Microsoft Earth Virtual flight ???
( sometimes it gives a black and white low res picture.....)
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Katamari||7/28/05 5:26 PM|
Yes, thanks for the feedback, its working now. I didnt realise what the timeframe was for a refresh.
Ps, any chance of you providing an Algorithim for the IR3 Landsat temperature? I cant seem find one myself.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Forkboy2||7/28/05 5:49 PM|
Microsoft also uses the USGS images....same as are available from Terraserver.

|Re: 3Dsolar addons||rtchow0||7/29/05 9:49 PM|
What about changing two letters in your code: "DOQ" -> "DRG"? Then we could see the USGS topo maps as well. I tried doing it manually, and it works the first time, but the link is reset to "DOQ" everytime I move the view. Great work though, really astounding!
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Emoshape||7/30/05 12:50 AM|
Well we thought the USGS topo maps was less interesting compare to other layers but maybe we were wrong we will see if there is an interest among the other users. The option has been added. Thank you for your proposal.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||rtchow0||7/30/05 5:04 AM|
Thanks! You never have too much data! If people don't like it, they can turn it off or delete it, right?
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Otik||7/30/05 6:26 AM|
Fantastic data you're providing here, but I seem to be having problems with the USGS urban areas data - wherever I go all it renders is white.
Is this a server error?
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Emoshape||7/30/05 6:37 AM|
Try to go above big us cities, doubleclick on the link USGS Urban it will bring you to a good place (Loas Angeles example) and load the map after 4 seconds.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Otik||7/30/05 6:52 AM|
Interesting... The cities I checked to start with were New York and Miami, and they're still just white; whereas LA and San Francisco seem to be fine. Are the East Coast cities not covered?
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Emoshape||7/30/05 7:08 AM|
Display all the US in GE (Zoom) then you will see small dark grey areas in the white map, its all cities covered:

|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Ripr||7/30/05 5:35 PM|
I'm looking at stuff out in the boondocks and would like to utilize the USGS imagery; however, if I have zoomed too close, when the image refreshes (at the 4 sec interval?) I get a "No Image Available" for the new frame/overlay and an error message admonishing me about exceeding the resolution capability.
Is there a work around?
It's hard to accomplish much in 4 seconds......
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||sparqi||7/30/05 9:26 PM|
Thanks for the Modis Rapid and USGS Topo additions. A word of caution to users; you can't zoom the USGS Topo lower than about 6000 feet AGL. If you do, you'll receive an error stating that the overlay doesn't exist because you've requested a resolution greater than the server can provide. If you do this enough times, GEarth will eventually lock up and crash.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Emoshape||7/31/05 12:49 AM|
Modis Rapid Fire is in beta so far, we will add the date of the event in the description and we will be able to display the last 90 days (today only the last 25)
Should be ready on Monday or Tuesday !
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Ripr||7/31/05 9:12 AM|
As noted below (my Post 07/30/05 5:35) I discovered this limitation. However, after the frame (tile) is downloaded, is there a way to keep it from refreshing after I zoom in? You can still get a bit of information based on zooming in on the resolution you have.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Emoshape||7/31/05 10:57 AM|
Do not refresh if you do not change your position, only refresh if position has change (even just a little bit) and after 4 seconds of inactivity. This is GE limitation.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Ripr||7/31/05 5:33 PM|
In plain English - Poop!
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Emoshape||8/1/05 1:23 AM|
You can zoom as much as you want inside an image but after 4 seconds of immobility the system will download the new layer corresponding to your new altitude. Then do not touch your mouse or the system will detect a new position and download again a new tile corresponding to your new position.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons ver 1.3 !||BenH||8/2/05 8:29 PM|
I like the Cloudtop the best.
The Landsat 7 bothers me though.
You said it's band 3 and IR, but Band 3 of Landsat is Red, not IR.
Band 6 is Thermal IR.
Thing that points this out is if you look at any large mountain range, the tops come out white, but I doubt they are very hot!
|Re: 3Dsolar addons ver 1.3 !||Emoshape||8/3/05 1:00 AM|
"In addition to the color styles, 9 separate grayscale styles are defined, one for each Landsat 7 bands. The style names are Blue Green Red IR1 IR2 IR3 ThL ThH Pan
These styles select a single spectral band out of the mosaic. The Blue Green and Red styles correspond to the respective visual wavelength bands. The IR1 IR2 and IR3 styles select one of the three infrared bands. ThL and ThH correspond to the thermal band, with either High or Low gain."
Check here http://mapus.jpl.nasa.gov/
We ask the IR3 so band 3 in IR not band 3 in visible
|Re: 3Dsolar addons ver 1.3 !||BenH||8/3/05 12:50 PM|
I had a look at that site. I can see where the confusion is coming from.
They have renamed the 3 IR bands as IR1 IR2 and IR3.
I downloaded each band from that sample data and did some basic false colour combinations. What I saw was that a [IR3, IR1, Green] false colour combination corresponded to a ETM742 image.
In common remote sensing the landsat bands are refered to Band 1 through to Band 7 and Panchromatic. The normal band descriptions can be seen here in the Official Landsat 7 Documentation. Look at Table 1.2
Looking at the link below, you can see a table showing the correct band names again and their radiometric characteristics.
Band 5 and 7 are Mid Infra Red (These correspond to the confusing IR2 and IR3)
Band 6 is Termal (In ETM it's split into 2, so it corresponds to ThL and ThH)
Band 4 is Near InfraRed. (This corresponds to IR1)
The thing about Earth temperature is, it's emittive.
Mid-IR is reflective.
Only the Far-IR (Thermal) is emittive.
This means that what you display as IR3 is infact Landsat ETM Band 7.
What you really need for the Earth Surface Temperature is Landsat ETM Band 6 (Or ThL/ThH on the site you listed)
Click Here for a sample image of ThL that I contrast stretched.
You can see the sea is black, cold relative to the land.
The land a pale grey warm relative to the sea and cool relative to other features.
Some of the buildings stand out, almost white, much warmer compared to the surrounding land.

Google is evil.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons ver 1.3 !||Emoshape||8/6/05 2:15 AM|
We have replaced with ThH (Thermal) but we think its less interesting, let us know the version you prefer.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons ver 1.3 !||BenH||8/6/05 11:34 AM|
Yes not great coverage and very bland.
Could try some contrast adjustment, but even then it's looks very patchy because the images a mosaic of different times, so different ground temperatures I imagine.
ETM band 4 (IR1) could be interesting too, it would show a differentiation between vegetation and non-vegetation.
Other interesting thing you could try is to make false colour combinations
Like RGB with Bands 432 in the respective colour guns. (IR1, Red, Blue as listed on that site) In 432, vegetation comes out in very red, because of band 4 being in the red gun.
Some samples of different colour combinations on this site
|Re: 3Dsolar addons ver 1.3 !||Emoshape||8/6/05 1:17 PM|
Updated with IR1
|Re: 3Dsolar addons ver 1.3 !||Emoshape||8/20/05 12:30 AM|
We have deleted the USGS Urban layer as Google Earth cover it well now.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Emoshape||9/1/05 1:30 AM|
Thanks, its company policy sorry for that, we will try to remove some of them !
|Re: 3Dsolar addons ver 1.3 !||Emoshape||9/3/05 1:11 AM|
New Orleans and Gulf cost !!
Using 3Dsolar addons then activating the "Modis Rapid Response System (Beta)" you will see an icon for Floods over the gulf cost and you will be able to display the moodis overlay (very interesting)
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||triphazard||9/4/05 11:48 AM|
A number of you folks report being frustrated 'cause the image refreshes (re-fetches) if you move or wait 4 seconds. Here's what I do to get manual refresh(I use the "USGS Ortho 1 meter" the most"):
1. Load the 3DSolar placemark.
2. Click the box so it'll get the sub-items
3. Edit the subitem (USGS Ortho 1 meter)
3a. Click the box for "refresh parameters" to bring up options
3b. make sure Time-based refresh is "once" and View-based refresh is "on request"
4. Zoom in/out, taking snapshots (right-click placemark / refresh), until I get the closest image it'll give me.
5. Then I can zoom in/out & pan around without losing the overlaid image.
|Re: 3Dsolar addons||Emoshape||9/4/05 11:54 AM|
Thanks for this recommendation, also if you receive an error message from the server usualy its because you are zooming too much close and the server do not have this resolution.

That was a screenshot of the 'Global IR 10km' overlay which should refresh every 20 mins. But it's looked like that for about 2 hours.
So could your server be down or is there something going on between your server and my PC?

Very nice! Is there a way to run this on a closed system, i.e. without a live internet connection? I'd like to take the topo and ortho data on my laptop to remote locations and be able to access it. Any ideas? Any way to cache the Terraserver data onto my hard drive and use the 3Dsolar addon to access it?
|Re: 3Dsolar addons ver 1.5 ! (Free)||Emoshape||12/8/05 12:21 AM|
The only thing you could do its increase the cache to the maximum size in the configuration options in Gogole Earth, and use it offline, but you need first to visit all area to download the map in your cache. Also do a backup of your cache and index file because sometime Coogle Earth could erase it.

Just checking out the Global Clouds and noticed it is currently "scrunched" up in the southern latitudes (i.e. the cloud image doesn't extend to the south pole, it goes from 0 degrees to like 20 degrees south).

I tried your KML layers today. Muy Groovy! Fills a utility void in GE, which is that geographic features aren't well labeled. Your other layers are interesting too.
Any future for adding higher res. USGS topographic maps, like the 24000 scale quadrangles? And the NAIP has aerial imagery as recent as 2006 available. Both free.
Also checked out your website. Lots of very cool graphics, not a lot of info about your products, for prospective shareholders to look at...

The USGS topo maps was a great addon. But the old link, and this new one, dont work. Can you send a direct link to re load the topos?
