I am currently running google chrome 19. something beta. I love the new tabs page but is there any way to hide the bookmarks bar on it?

yes! Go to the "wrench icon" select "bookmarks" and their should be an option for show/hide bookmarks bar.  OR Control+Shift+B

This is all assuming you are using a PC, if you are using a Mac, I cannot help you.

Don't know if you still need help with this, but I have a semi-solution. I had to hide all my bookmarks on the new tab page for a presentation. All I had to do was go to the bookmarks manager, and drop all my bookmarks in a folder. Now, only that folder name shows up on the new tab page.
