Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? stumbleman00 5/4/11 5:30 PM
I'm often on very slow connections (even my work connection is a trickle) so when I want to watch a YouTube video without it stopping every 5 seconds to buffer, I usually hit play and then pause right away to let the whole video fully buffer before I watch.

I noticed that as of a few weeks ago, when I watch a video in the Chrome browser, YouTube has stopped buffering completely. When I press play then pause, there is no loading progress bar, and it appears that both playback AND buffering stops. When I press play again, the video still stops every 5 seconds to buffer because my connection is not fast enough, indicating that nothing has be "advanced" loaded. Most of the time the video does not even play at all when I hit play again.

Additionally, when I move the playback head of the video to a different spot in the video (earlier or later), the same thing happens - the video pauses and then slowly plays as it stutters along waiting for my connection to keep up.

This behavior doesn't seem to happen Firefox (it still buffers as it always has), so this must be some form of new Chrome integration. Can someone help me and tell me how I can turn buffering back "on"? It makes all YouTube videos virtually un-watchable on my slow connections, and I do not want to move over to Firefox or another browser as Chrome works very nicely for most of my other purposes.

Thanks
Mike

I've been having the same problem, if I try to go back to a specific time in the video it starts loading all over again, it's annoying... Works fine in FireFox for me too.
It seriously makes videos unwatchable.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? ferconsigli 5/9/11 4:20 PM
I'm having the same problem. It does not seem to be related to any extension.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? dnaod 5/11/11 12:18 PM
Confirmed.  I'm having the same issue.  My SSH tunnel is too slow to stream effectively so I normally start it and let it load in the background.  It's no longer buffering in the background.  My timeline is about the same as OP's.

YouTube is no longer watchable on a slower connection.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? neilgoldman305 5/13/11 9:15 PM
Same issue for me in Google Chrome 11.0.696.65. However in Firefox 4, youtube acts normally.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? neilgoldman305 5/13/11 9:20 PM
Follow up, I just noticed in Chrome, embedded Youtube videos which still have the old-style player buffer properly.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? CaptainTwat 5/14/11 8:25 AM
Same problem here, I've been looking for a solution but no luck. Very frustrating!
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? dnaod 5/14/11 7:05 PM
I did figure out how to fix it. I kept clearing my cache to no avail. It wasn't until I cleared my cookies did the buffering go back to normal. So the fix for me was to clear your cookies.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? Peter Sobolev 5/15/11 12:23 PM
Same problem last several days, with FireFox 3.6.17,  Flash Player 10,2,159,1, Win7
Chrome 7.0.517.44 - everything is OK
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? stumbleman00 5/23/11 8:40 AM
Anyone been able to solve this? Looks like others are having the same problem:

So far the two proposed solutions are to clear cookies (very inconvenient if you have a lot of form and password information stored), and re-install Chrome. Anyone try these with success?

Google, any advice? Hopefully a support rep will chime in at this point because this is clearly not an isolated issue.

If you ever fix the buffer let me know!
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? dnaod 6/2/11 4:38 PM
Meh.  It started for me again.  Not sure why.  But the non-buffering issue has started again.  And I'm not sure I'm willing to clear all my cookies again.  I'm still finding stuff that I have to re-enter.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? huronjikll 6/6/11 2:19 PM
thanks dnaod, clearing cookies does solve the buffering problem. http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?answer=95582 ink on how to clear cookies on googlechrome.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? dnaod 6/10/11 10:44 AM
I (accidentally) cleared my cookies again last night and buffering returned.  I'm very confident now that that method is a (rather disruptive but effective) work-around.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? CP Chaurasia 6/14/11 8:04 PM
Thanks Sir, clearing cookies does solve the buffering problem. thanks again,
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? dhmholley 7/20/11 11:34 AM
I can confirm that this solves the issue for Firefox 5.0 as well.

Of course, I'd rather a less disruptive solution. Anyone have any further leads.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? SBaker1689 8/13/11 12:40 PM
I am having the same issue which seems to be caused by chrome refusing to finish loading the webpage even though it is finished which pretty much stops youtube from buffering. When i hit the stop button in chrome so the browser stops loading the page the buffer bar completly fills however the video still does not play.

So far the only fix i have found is to refresh the page over and over again until chrome decides to work properly. I have noticed chrome doing this on other sites as well, however it isn't that much of an issue because said sites don't have videos to buffer.

This started happening a few days ago.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? TEXASCITIZEN 10/2/11 10:30 PM
Same problem with IE8 & IE9 (32 bit & 64 bit) using old & new computers with video ram of 512 mb, 2 mb and 3 with1 mb. The videos range from old to videos of the Tesla car which is only days old. CPU's range from i7 2600 to a 1.4 ghz Pentium M. All have at least 8 Mb of system RAM.  Using Win7 64 bit and Vista.

I can stream a full length movie on a 24" monitor flawlessly but I can't stream a 2 minute You Tube video in a small window without it playing 6-7 seconds and then having to rebuffer. I just watched 2 videos of the Tesla & the second one actually ran 30 seconds before rebuffering but most only run 6-7 seconds (timed). Unless the subject is really interesting, I bypass all such videos now. This has been ongoing for a long time. It is ludicrous that this problem is so pervasive but does not yet have a permanent fix.

Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? AllRespectDue 10/8/11 6:28 PM
BAhhhhhhhhh it's doing it again......!!!!!!!

1.  Buffer GONE. red loading bar stops then loads then stops. Watching videos is getting to be a REAL PAIN IN THE ASS NOW again!!!

2. and the stupid [auto detect] for best video quality ( in the player) is in a constant loading state

3. Some videos stop a quarter of the way through and start over.

4. Full screen takes too long, exit full screen shows a clip of the video when it was FIRST enabled then goes back to it's original position on the video.

Thanks for all the new bugs and some of these are OLD bugs that you've neglected at the expense of our frustration
Sick of this retarded place, are you guys going to actually build something of value here OR you just going to break everything? I swear that is ALL I've seen BROKEN this BROKEN that ... BUG here BUG there past few years now!

I was able to fix this by cleaing cookies of youtube.com and google.com. Did not need to clear the cache or "all my cookies". In case someone needs help with clearing cookies of specific websites, just remember that one can search / filter the websites in the Cookies/Contents dialog of chrome. FWIW I am using chrome 14.

I had the same problem with the youtube videos on chrome..
I then went on to Youtube through the Internet Explorer which is provided by Windows 7..
Not through the chrome..

Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? yourjudgeandjury 1/8/12 7:16 AM
I reported the same issue with Chrome countless times and never received a response back  ONCE! Aside from the complete lack of customer service from YouTube/Google, it's completely idiotic that Chrome won't work with YouTube. I have over 650 subs and almost 5 million views, but extremely close to telling YouTube to f off because of this issue, the new layout and yet another widespread outage in under a week.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? willfe 2/4/12 6:52 PM
I can report similar symptoms, and that clearing cache and cookies does not resolve the problem. I have verified that playback is smooth as expected using other browsers (Firefox / IE tested).

@AllRespectDue and @yourjudgeandjury: Your insulting rants add nothing to the discussion, and in fact serve to detract from its quality and utility to users actually interested in solving the problem.

Please refer to your service agreement with Google for details on the communication responsibilities and obligations Google has in terms of responding to your specific complaints and bug reports. Perhaps your slow realization that you haven't *got* a service agreement with Google will give you pause for thought, and your next complaint or bug report should include your adjusted and improved disposition towards the people you're requesting free help from.

I have the same problem.  50% of times using youtube the video gets stuck / stops buffering and when reloading the page the same keeps happing.  My wife has a Mac and is using Crome and never has this problem.  I am not sure what the problem is but considering all the problems with Windows in general I am now switching to a Mac, after 20 years of using Windows

I have the same problem WITH FIREFOX. The real question is WHY does clearing cookies help. Think about it. I think it may be a - particular - cookie that is placed intentionally to reduce bandwidth use. If so, how do we A. know? and B. Complain?

Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? Ender1081 5/30/12 9:17 AM
Possible Fix:
I'm on a slow internet connection, so having video buffer completely before watching is essential for me.  This stopped working for me in both Firefox and Chrome, so I checked out the Video settings in Youtube.  The following seemed to work for me:
(Click on your Youtube account name, then "settings", then "playback", and select "I have a slow connection. Never play higher-quality video".  Unfortunately it means that you can't buffer the highest quality version of videos.  It does however allow you to fully buffer 360p videos, move anywhere in the buffered section without re-buffering, and launch fullscreen without re-buffering.  I've only just tested a couple of videos now, so don't know if it will continue to work, but hope this helps someone out there!

Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? ahkinum 6/1/12 10:22 AM
Piss off. If you have no answer to problem, then why bring your a.zz here and tell people about their communications. Google is not being kind in good hearted when helping people fix issues with their product, it's all about money. They don't make the videos and content that people watch by using their product. Google-youtube are parasites, that use other peoples created content, and act like they are the one's that are superior, as if they created the stuff they show.

Ignoring someone because of a wrong you think they did is a form of retaliation. That is not professionalism. I guess if this is the came, then the "Do No Harm" motto of google is a sham, because of the way their workers punish people that are asking how to use their tools better.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? yoyomerio 6/15/12 4:19 AM
BOYS AND GIRLS THE SOLUTION IS VERY EASY:

Simply download the extension 'SmartVideo for Youtube' (Go into extensions menu and 'search for extension'.

INSTALL IT. UNCLICK THE 'SMART BUFFER' OPTION in preferences (even tho its shaded, you still need to unclick it)

AND THERE YOU GO!

FULL YOUTUBE AUTOBUFFERING! :)

Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? claudiu_123 9/16/12 4:04 AM
hey guys,

The fix is realy easy, right click on the video got to settings and move the local storage to 10Mb or unlimited if you want no worries.

Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? tamerlan 11/14/12 2:25 AM
thanx claudiu_123 for the tip. I just want to make one addition: when right clicking on the video if you cannot see "settings" option, then choose "About HTML5" and in the bottom of the newly opened tab or window click "Leave the HTML5 Trial". It returns the old style right click menu to the youtube videos. Afterwards you can follow claudiu_123's suggestion.

Hope it fixes your buffering problem! It did for me!

Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? yesdir 2/25/13 6:44 PM
Clearing all youtube.com cookies worked for me too!  Previously it wouldn't buffer the entire video, it would stop playing.  If I tried to rewind, it would forget everything it had buffered and start again.  After clearing cookies, it works the way it's supposed to, buffering ahead when I'm playing, and not losing the buffer when I rewind.  phew!

Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? OliverSalzburg 4/28/13 2:47 PM
This problem can be caused by the Flash plugin used in Chrome (PepperFlash). You can disable that plugin and use the official Flash plugin from Adobe to get the same behavior as Firefox.

Alternatively, there are extensions that can have an impact on the buffering behavior of Chrome.

I've outlined the process for both at http://superuser.com/questions/586236/why-is-youtube-buffering-loading-behavior-so-horrible-in-chrome

Hope this helps!

Hope it helps in any way.

Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? Isaac Eshetu 6/3/13 1:02 PM
The easiest thing to do would be not to stop playing the video. Just mute the sound and get back to your work. When it finishes buffering (off course with thousands of giggles and gaggles) you can replay it with the sound on. I do that all the time.
Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? Ster Alerav 6/17/13 4:36 AM
I tried using either of those flash players. None of them seemed to have solved the issue. Really, either Youtube or Google or even Adobe need to get their fucking shit together. This is getting really frustrating.

My internet speed is fine, it buffers much faster that I can watch. My problem is that at some point it will stop buffering at roughly 1 min into the vid, so it freezes when i get there, it wont ever start again unless i click ahead or behind the stop point. It will start buffering after i click and I can watch another min to 5 mins of video before it happens again... why?????

Re: Why does YouTube no longer buffer videos when using Chrome? Richie74 8/3/13 2:48 PM
Iv'e got so fed up with this issue with chrome and youtube i sought out an alternative solution...
just add "ss" to the URL between www. and Youtube. This allows you to download the video instead of waiting for it to buffer. Same time taken plus you have a copy for repeat viewing or to delete after watching.
Not ideal but it works fine.
Google/Youtube seem to enjoy creating problems for themselves needlessly.

Should have also mentioned you can just add the savefrom plugin/extension which adds a handy Download option on every youtube page. even easier than adding the "ss"
