The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos Ryan "Fwiz" Wyatt 28/08/17 13:04

We’ve received a lot of questions recently around why some gaming creators may be seeing yellow icons in their video manager and what it means. Here’s a rundown of what’s going on and what you can do:

  • So what happened?: In the last few months we spent time addressing concerns from advertisers around where their ads are placed. With new controls and guidelines implemented, many creators have seen their earnings return to normal as advertisers resumed their campaigns. As a part of these recent changes, however, some videos were classified as not suitable for all advertisers, limiting the number of ads served on those videos. There was also no ability to directly appeal in Video Manager. So on August 7th, we announced that we’ve expanded the ability for creators to appeal videos that have been receiving fewer ads.

  • What does this mean for gaming creators? It means that if you see a yellow icon in your video dashboard and feel our automated systems got it wrong, PLEASE APPEAL. With 400 hours of video uploaded every single minute, we rely on machine learning to evaluate content across the platform. But no system is perfect. When you appeal, our reviewers take a look and their decisions help our systems get smarter over time. Deleting the video and re-uploading won't help.

  • But what games can be monetized? Our automated systems DO NOT make video-specific decisions around what can or can’t be monetized based on the publisher or game. On the contrary, not only do we want to see epic gameplays, we want you to have the opportunity to make money while doing it. As we said in our advertiser guidelines - violence in the normal course of video gameplay is generally OK for advertising, but gratuitous violence as the focal point is not. Excessive profanity as well as title, thumbnail or meta data can also impact a video’s monetization.

  • Can’t YouTube do more to support gamers? We’re very focused on creating more ways for gamers - and creators of all kinds - to earn money on YouTube. That’s why we acquired FameBit to help creators partner with brands and why we’re experimenting with sponsorships in the YouTube Gaming app. We even launched Super Chat so that your biggest fans can give you money for serving up chicken dinners while live streaming PUBG. In all seriousness, we have teams of partner managers, engineers and product managers, not to mention one of the biggest salesforces around, whose entire job is to make sure that creators -- including gamers -- find success on our platform by monetizing videos with advertisements.

The gaming community has been a central part of YouTube's success from the very beginning. With hundreds of millions of fans watching hundreds of billions of minutes of gaming videos every month, gaming has never been bigger on YouTube than it is today. We’re proud to be the home of gaming and know that the community will continue to play an important role in YouTube’s future.

Happy to help! Let me know if you have any questions.
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos Ryan "Fwiz" Wyatt 28/08/17 13:28
You got it. We're trying to be transparent to our creators throughout this process, so I'm glad the information was helpful!
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos PeggyK 28/08/17 13:51
Thank you for the FAQ. Is there anything that gamers and other creators can do if their video doesn't meet the minimum view threshold for appeals?
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos Shaun Joy 28/08/17 14:21
Alright, you asked me to bring a list of questions here to answer for transparency sake, so I want to bring them here (as I'm also a reporter, and have been attempting to get answers for creators for the last month)

1) Why is the reason for a video deemed to be given limited monetization status hidden from the creator? With only one appeal to work with, sometimes the reason given regarding what is hitting the video is very, very unclear. For example: I've done a video on Resident Evil Revelations 2 Game Design. Have many other videos with no problems with that type of content, and this one does not show any horror elements (aka blood and guts), even if that were what would be causing some of the cases. Right now, I have no clue on what exactly is causing the video to get hit, other then one common trend: the word evil in the title of videos having a pattern of demonetization (same with the Evil Within).

How can youtube expect a creator to think that the video is advertiser friendly when they may not know why the video is unfriendly in the first place?

2) To further extend on that, how can you expect a creator to adjust if you don't give the information for #1? Creators like Lazy Game Reviews have been hit for seemingly no reason (a video on windows 98 apps somehow got hit, despite being friendly and educational)? If you're saying that appeals can help clarify the system.....wouldn't the opposite be true as well? That you may get false flags, and not leave a creator a way to warn your system that's learning incorrectly?

3) Can you comment on why Youtube has taken this long to talk to their creators on this issue, when the entire gaming community has been up in arms since the introduction of the limited monetization on August 7th, with limited response?

4) Have the reports of videos needing to be 5 year old friendly from several creators (Yammy, Magnaminx, etc) true when it comes to advertising in the future?

5) Is YouTube planning on getting more specific with the monetization guidelines in the immediate future (https://creatoracademy.youtube.com/page/lesson/advertiser-friendly)? Many of the guidelines are vague regarding the material in question, and leaves too many questions and too little examples of what is really ok or not. Take this section: " Video content that features highly sexualized content, such as video content where the focal point is nudity, body parts or sexual simulations, is not eligible for advertising". Here's the thing: what if the video in question is showing off a series of Tattoos in a mod for Skyrim? For some, tattooes can be sexual, as it shows bare skin on body parts. Is any tattoo fall into this category, even in the gaming world? Or not? Is it possible to provide more concrete examples of what are dos and dont's regarding that parameters?
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos Shaun Joy 28/08/17 16:42
Alright, let's keep the question train coming:

1) Does a channel's history have any bearing on the nature of monetization going forward? The reason why I ask this question is simple, it's phrases like this in the advertising guidelines portion of the creator academy (https://creatoracademy.youtube.com/page/lesson/advertiser-friendly#yt-creators-strategies-4): "Balance videos that deal with more mature topics with others that might focus on more widely appealing topics". That seems to imply that focusing on videos that only look at mature topics, like video game violence, may have an affect on videos down the line.

2) Are guns in the content of a thumbnail, even if they are a discussion point at hand (let's say you're talking about a new CS:GO gun that was released) going to be a problem regarding monetization? This has shown mixed results in the community, with a majority of the videos seemingly getting hit, but not being 100%. Does context matter at all when it comes to thumbnails?

3) I just want this question to be answered so I can get clarification for those who seemed to question it: not tagging your video will most likely result in limited monetization, due to it not being able to place ads on it, correct?

4) Is there any way for a creator to see what percentage of ads are unavailable to them in certain videos? I understand that it's limited monetization, but it doesn't exactly say how much its limited. I'm assuming that in certain cases, one video could be slightly limited but still be perfectly fine for others (tattoos for example), while others would get strongly hit and only really have limited options available for them.

5) Is Youtube planning on doing anything regarding the timing element of the advertiser guidelines? Aka, gaming news channels for example are hit hard by this right now due to the fact that a majority of their money/monetization is important for keeping the news up to date and recent, and can't keep the video "unlisted" until an appeal regarding monetization is heard?
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos _Mystogan_ 28/08/17 17:23
This system is a mistake. It is disappointing that the creators are affected by this
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos Albert Kaizou 28/08/17 18:07
I don't get it. It seems YouTube decided to screw the content creators to appease advertisement first. I'm for banning certain type of contents but do just randomly ban a video for no reason at all is not something to understand.I do only sports, Pro Evolution Soccer and FIFA to be exact. How is this unsuitable video. I'm not cursing I'm just playing and commentating games. Tell me why is this so call machine picking my videos as unsuitable? It's like every video I put out now a days gets flag as unsuitable. I don't understand how a company like Google can release such broken automated system. It seems the system don't even know what it's looking for.
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos _Mystogan_ 28/08/17 21:42
They do not care about the creators who give their suggestions. They only care about their automated system. It causes creators to lose their appetite and lose sleep when thinking about it. When you publish the video and after a few hours your video will be restricted to ads. It's funny how you can not make money when you upload videos.
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos toutagamon 29/08/17 02:10
That's great and all, but what about us small timers? We can't even appeal if the video does not have 1000 views in a week. And yes, big or small I still do care. It's not just a matter of monetization which is less peanuts for me anyway. It's a matter of discarding my trouble for whatever silly thing I have done. It's insulting and degrading.
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos splatcat 29/08/17 03:13
I would also like to know more about the threshold for appeals. I understand that this is a new system , I understand what they are trying to do and agree with it. However if the threshold for review is 1,000 views in 7 days it is clearly an issue for a large selection of YouTube publishers.
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos Vulkk 29/08/17 03:27
I would like to know how is it possible that a manual review was done on a video and yet the CS representative refuses to explain to me why it's not suitable for all advertisers. This said video does not violate the rules in any way (no vulgar language, no cursing, no impolite behavior, no blood and gore or any brutal scenes in it, nothing of the sorts), yet it was manually reviewed (by a person...? I doubt, but still...) and still continues to be yellow-marked without anybody being able to explain to my what is the reason for that. I have a number of marked video gameplay that is marked, but I wanted some assistance on one single example, so I can make up some conclusions for myself. The CS representative has been ignoring my ticket almost a full week now. It's a 4 min long clip.
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos Frosted Fricks 29/08/17 19:34

This doesn't really explain questions like why is a stream being classified as non advertiser friendly before it even starts (see photo for reference) or another one like why does a 9 minute video get classified as such 2 minutes after it processes? Can you explain this to me? Because as far as I can see your automated systems are just sending back canned responses and I can't seem to get a hold of a human to help. It feels as though my channel is targeted and the worst part is you're company's "algorithm" making my SEO go down the drain because I am too afraid of saying one wrong thing in it to suddenly get the non add friendly symbol. What is your company actively doing to help smaller channels that can't hit your 1000 views in 7 days stacked against us situation?

Sad to say I don't think we're going to get the help we actually need.

Doesn't explain why a gaming channel is closed down that shows nothing but simple gaming videos. No violence or profanity and absolutely no spam.

YouTube need to review their staff before reviewing one more video.

I notice some of my fashion (model wearing normal dress) catwalk  video is getting those yellow $.   How do you determine what is suitable?
also some private video also get those yellow $ ????

Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos JP4K 13/10/17 03:08
Also some dance - fire dance is mark with not suitable ??  how do you expect a fire dancer to dance?   There is no nudity.

I also notice that male dancer doesn't get those mark, while female dancer seems to get more flag as not suitable?
is there some sort of discrimination on gender ??

Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos JP4K 13/10/17 03:17
" Video content that features highly sexualized content, such as video content where the focal point is nudity, body parts or sexual simulations, is not eligible for advertising"

Does this mean, if the clothes the model wearing is "sexual stimulate" then it is not eligible?   But then, isn't fashion clothing  suppose to stimulate the viewers?   other wise, why would women or men go to fashion show or buy that expensive dress?   I don't think joe-six-pack is going to watch nerdy clothes on women.   What the hell for?

Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos JP4K 13/10/17 03:31
Google/Youtube should follow MPAA movie rating - G, PG, R, or X on Youtube video.   what one person art is another person X rated.
Following MPAA movie rating and define the video according to that rating should allow advertiser to buy ads on the rating categories.

My two cents.  Youtube is business and is I business to make money. I understand that.  They make money from advertisers so that is who they are focusing on and trying to appease.  I understand this too.

What I don't understand is this.  All this whole Adpocalypse started as a result of a few terrorist videos that some ads showed on.  So, why is youtube targeting EVERYTHING?  If the problem was ads showing up on terrorist videos or videos depicting REAL violent crime, then why not just focus on that.  Why target gaming videos, music videos or any other type of videos?  Why?

Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos Molda22 19/10/17 05:27
Problem with this system is, that its completely random. I understand that sometimes it could pick something wrong. But it is picking things that are completely OK. Lately i have been doing only sports game lets plays, there is no sex, no violence, i am not using swear words, nothing is wrong in those videos, nothing wrong is in description, name or in tags. yet suddenly every third video i upload gets demonetized.
Re: The importance of requesting review for Gaming videos John Howard28 19/10/17 06:26

Youtube is not focusing on the original issue that caused this entire ruckus, which was ads appearing on terrorist videos.  They are focusing on everything, and that is the problem.  Plus, youtube has not made it clear to us, the creators, what the new rules are.  So, we are wandering around in the dark bumping into stop signs we can't even see.  Everyone here is screaming about this, but no one here really knows diddly squat about anything concerning this issue.  And since youtube will not chime in and shine some light on the subject (because they want us to remain in the dark), we are just blind people leading other blind people and we are falling into pits here.

Bottom line.  Nothing makes sense because we don't have a clear understanding of what the rules are.  Is the system messing up?  Or is the system just doing what it has been told to do and we think it is messing up?  We have no way of knowing because we don't know what it has been told to do.

Maybe youtube has decided to try to create a "Zero Offense Zone" for advertisers so that no ad will appear along side any video that has the remotest possibility of offending anyone.   If this is the case, then prepare to start making videos about Japanese Opera, because that is about the only thing that won't offend at least someone.  Although personally, I pretty much hate opera, so even that might offend someone.

At the end of the day, youtube has to cater to two three sets of customers.  First, the source of the money; Advertisers.  Second, The Creators.  Third the Viewers.  Right now, youtube is just catering to the advertisers.  But if they keep crushing their creators, they will find out very quickly that they need the creators, just as much as they need the advertisers.  Because without the creators content, they have nothing to run ads on.  Then they need the viewers, because without the viewer nobody makes any money.  If youtube continues to offend creators they will create a hole in the online video streaming market and we all know, someone will step in to fill it.  If all the good creators leave youtube, then they will be left with content no one wants to watch and the will become the next PBS.

Now I know that some of you might think that youtube cannot be toppled from the top of the online stream video mountain.  But this is not true.  I have been on this earth for quite a while and I have seen this before.  I remember when people thought the same way about Microsoft, Internet Explorer and Yahoo.  The experts all said they could never be toppled from the top spot.  Well, look at where they are today.  And what about Walmart that people said could never be challanged?  Amazon.com is hurting them big time.  They are now losing money in many markets and have had to shut down over 500 stores in the last few years. Last year dedicated tens of billions of dollars to improve their online store front to try to regain the revenue they have lost to Amazon.com.  I think it is too little too late for Walmart.  Walmart may never go away, but they are no longer the unbeatable giant they once were.

Right now Facebook is investing massive amounts of energy to try to steal the online streaming video market from youtube, and has recently introduced ways for video creators to monetize their videos and make money from them on facebook.  Now is not the time for youtube to forget that the need the creators, just as much as they need to advertiser.  If they keep offending their creators, the creators will leave and go somewhere else.  You can only bully people if you are the only store on the block.  Youtube is not the only store on the block anymore.

It still does not tell me why several of my videos have been flagged this week, preventing my ability to earn revenue on them, even though for all appearances each and every one of these videos is in full compliance with the guidelines. It does not tell what in particular the system saw that caused it to incorrectly flag these videos, so that I can try to prevent this incorrect flagging on any future videos, and thereby avoid having to contact partner support for each and every video that does get flagged because the appeals process is completely useless.

Please tell me what good is an appeal process when the parameters of said appeal cannot be met? There might as well not be an appeal process at all. Please explain to me why I cannot make any revenue from my work when said works complies in every way with the advertiser friendly guidelines as laid out by YouTube. Please explain to me how it is in any way fair and not discriminatory that I cannot make revenue from my work because of an arbitrary parameter that makes appealing useless, when the only reason I need to appeal is because of a broken system YouTube itself implemented.

Please explain to me what steps YouTube is taking to accommodate the smaller partners who CANNOT appeal these incorrect flaggings, so that we can continue to earn the revenue we deserve on our work.
