video size? paradive 6/30/12 9:47 PM
i was making vids 640x480 with the bg image at 640x480 for vimeo so there'd be no black, empty space on the right and left sides of them.

now i'm uploading to youtube. and there is.

so what size (of the vid and/or bg image) do i need to make em so they fill out the space?

You have to make sure the pixel size ratio is 16:9.  Use this if ever in doubt: http://size43.com/jqueryVideoTool.html
640x480 is ratio 4:3.  So you get black bars on the side because the Youtube player prefers 16:9.  Standard 16:9 resolutions are this:

  • 1080p: 1920x1080
  • 720p: 1280x720
  • 480p: 854x480
  • 360p: 640x360
  • 240p: 426x240

Your footage has to be recorded in these sizes and/or your editing software has to export them in that size. If you change your 640x480 video into 640x360 (16:9) you'll just end up stretching it.

You can also use these tags in your video to get the same effect (but you will be either cropping it or stretching it):

  • Tag: yt:crop=16:9
(Zooms in on the 16:9 area, removes windowboxing)

  • Tag: yt:stretch=16:9
(Fixes anamorphic content by scaling to 16:9)

  • Tag: yt:stretch=4:3
(Fixes 720x480 content that is the wrong aspect ratio by scaling to 4:3)
