|Not receiving Google Alerts||JesseNewton||1/15/13 7:19 PM|
I've been using Alerts for several years to find inventory for my business. They worked fine, and I received 20 or 30 a day. Now, I rarely receive more than two or three per day. I can go into Alerts and manually run the searches, and tons of results pop up for which I never received email alerts. I haven't changed anything, and they're all set to "All results" with "immediate" delivery. What's going on?
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||Kousha N.||1/16/13 9:14 AM|
Hi JesseNewton, welcome to the forum! I'd be happy to investigate this for you. Would it be possible to get the email address you're using for these alerts so we can take a closer look? If that's possible, send it to me directly rather than posting it here on the forum. (To send a direct message, click on the arrow next to "Post reply" and select "reply to author").
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||angelarbeasley||1/24/13 9:23 AM|
Having the same problem.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||JesseNewton||1/24/13 9:30 AM|
For what it's worth, I'm still having the same problem after changing my delivery method to RSS. I might get two or three RSS alerts a day, but when I go run some of the actual searches from my Google Alerts, I get far more new results that didn't get delivered. It's almost like Google isn't finding the results in the first place, and I'm having to run the searches manually to "refresh" its memory.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||DHPnyc||1/25/13 11:52 AM|
Same here! My Google alerts have not been working for over a month. It's a shame because I use them for work.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||angelarbeasley||1/31/13 7:27 AM|
I fixed mine - You have to set your preference to "all results" versus "only the best results". At least that's what worked for me.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||AMW_WVB||2/27/13 3:14 PM|
Any updates? I have he same issue.
Interestingly new alerts I added a week ago or so are working but my older ones are not.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||Kousha N.||3/1/13 3:25 PM|
Does it make any difference if you create new alerts with the same settings as one that has stopped returning the same number of results? I've heard reports from some users that this has made a difference for them.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||JesseNewton||3/1/13 3:35 PM|
Kousha - I've tried this, and it doesn't seem to help.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||AMW_WVB||3/1/13 3:49 PM|
I tried deleting my old ones and adding them back but still not working on my end.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||Kousha N.||3/4/13 2:25 PM|
Hi all, thanks for the update. We're currently investigating this. Would it be possible to know what your search terms were that you set to Alerts?

|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||Tyyyyyyyyyyyyy||3/4/13 3:01 PM|
All of mine are craigslist searches as well. None are working. I tried deleting some and re adding them, and added completely new search queries...Still no alerts.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||AMW_WVB||3/4/13 4:11 PM|
The two I'm having trouble with are
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||ST Nathan||3/6/13 3:11 PM|
It appears that craigslist is not actually being indexed by Google at all over the past few days. See here: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!searchin/websearch/craigslist/websearch/KGbY7LYAeRE/RImvfb0L_QsJ
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||rcollamore||3/6/13 3:29 PM|
Same problem here. New Craigslist ads are only indexed from around 5pm till 12am PST, then they completely disappear. Process repeats itself the next day. Been going on for about a week or so.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||Kousha N.||3/7/13 3:52 PM|
Thanks everyone, just wanted to let you know that I've gathered the feedback and am looking into this. I can't promise when an update will come, but as soon as I find anything out I will let you know.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||AMW_WVB||3/7/13 4:52 PM|
FYI - Yesterday I received an e-mail alert for "app discoverability" (my alert is set up for it without the quotes). It's the first time in at least 3 - 4 months that I received one. Previously I would get one at least every few days.
Also, I did submit a ticket about this overall issue prior to finding this discussion thread. Maybe some work done via that ticket?
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||Brent Hannify||3/11/13 2:29 PM|
Same here. I can't even load the Google Alerts URL to set up new ones for my new job.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||ST Nathan||3/12/13 12:33 PM|
@Kousha N: Regarding the lack of craigslist indexing. Even if you don't have an ETA on a fix, if you could let us know once you know whether it is a bug or an intentional change, that would be great. If it's a bug then hopefully we can expect it to be fixed at some point, whereas obviously if it's intentional those of us who rely on it will need to find an alternative. Thanks!
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||rcollamore||3/12/13 4:14 PM|
Although this thread is small, myself and ST Nathan collectively, are indirectly the voice of well over 100k people that this glitch/bug is affecting. This isn't just a simple google alerts issue.
Google is not indexing millions of Craigslist ads properly. Is it a glitch by Google or something orchestrated by Craigslist?
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||ThisNamesTaken||3/12/13 5:43 PM|
I need details about this also. I think WAY more than 100k people will be impacted by this problem. Many businesses rely on this data with google and they will be effected big time. Any updates???!
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||rcollamore||3/13/13 7:21 PM|
Seriously, when is some at Google going to pull their head out of their ass and take this seriously?
Once again, individual Craigslist ads are NOT indexing. Do a search anytime between 4am and 5pm PST with the -intitle:classifieds operator within the past 24 hours date range and you'll see zero results. What's going on?
At least acknowledge a bug exists and someone/somebody is going to fix it.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||JesseNewton||3/13/13 7:36 PM|
Yeah, now I can't find anything on Craigslist using Google searches. This is seriously impacting my ability to find inventory. I'm having to manually do searches on other aggregate websites, which is wasting an hour or two of my time every day. Not cool.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||ST Nathan||3/14/13 4:46 AM|
@JesseNewton: You might want to give our site (www.searchtempest.com) a try, at least until Google gets this fixed. Since they stopped indexing craigslist, we've switched over to powering SearchTempest with Bing. It doesn't support all the same features, but we've managed to add a few: you can choose a category, only show results within a certain distance of your zip, only show results for the past X days, etc.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||Thomas P.||3/14/13 8:00 AM|
I'm going to do a divide & conquer here.
When talking about traversing the WWW for textual information & extraction from webpages, then GoogleBot is the guy on the move (24x7).
Google Alerts does not crawl anything, but relies on GoogleBot's findings - or rather what new or updated items goes into Google's index.
And here's the divide:
You only have problem w. Google Alerts, if you're seeing (by regularly performing a Google WebSearch) new & updated information getting into Google's index, yet never receive any Google Alerts to reflect such news/updates/modifications.
Any information, which has not entered Google's index, is not going to be spit out by Google Alerts.
Google Alerts rely on Google's index - and if Google's index is missing out on something, then ... there's no reason to think you've got an issue with the Google Alerts service itself.
I'm unaware if there are sites exhibiting similar behaviour as Craigslist is (in/to/with Google), but - Craigslist is not a Google Alerts issue (it's a Google WebSearch issue)
And ... there is in fact a thread specifically asking about the indexing of Craigslist:
* Site: search not finding all ads on Craigs List
Does this divide leave anyone (in this thread here), who actually has an issue with Google Alerts?

Hey Thomas, DarkUFO (TC for Blogger here)
Yes, I still am seeing issues with Google Alerts. My alerts have dwindled to almost nothing,although when I do a Google search for the same terms its showing fresh results.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||Thomas P.||3/21/13 7:02 AM|
Hi Andy :-)
What's the details for the alerts exhibiting problems? - you know the basic drill ;-)
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||DarkUFO - Blogger Top Contributor||3/22/13 12:40 PM|
Ok here goes.
I use this search string in Google Alert
spoilertv OR "spoilertv"
Up until a month or so ago I would get serveral of these a day. Now I'm luck to get 1 or 2 a week.
Use the same search term in Google Search and change the timeframe to either Last Hr or Last 24 Hrs you will see there are plenty of results.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||Thomas P.||3/23/13 11:25 AM|
Q1: Is your Alert set up as ? : I can't attempt reproduction without knowing.
Search query : spoilertv OR "spoilertv"
Result type : Everything
How often : As-it-happens
How many : All results
Deliver to : <email>
Q2: Why is your search [ spoilertv OR "spoilertv" ] instead of simply [ spoilertv ] ?
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||DarkUFO - Blogger Top Contributor||3/23/13 11:41 AM|
Yep, that's the exact setting I have.
Sorry there should have been a space
spoilertv OR "spoiler tv"
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||Thomas P.||3/25/13 8:03 PM|
Hi again Andy
Sorry about being a little late in replying.
OK, Could your try creating an Alert, with variation in the "How often:"-field, setting its value to "Once a day".
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||DarkUFO - Blogger Top Contributor||3/26/13 1:55 AM|
No worries :) It's not a particularly urgent issue, just a little annoying :)
Ok, I've set that up and I'll keep an eye on the OAD emails and report back her in a few days.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||DarkUFO - Blogger Top Contributor||3/27/13 2:03 AM|
Thomas, I recieved a daily email that contained 3 alerts. I was expecting a lot more than that as we had posted in access of 20+ new articles on the site yesterday.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||Thomas P.||3/27/13 2:34 PM|
OK, and FYI: I did yesterday create an escalation on a gut draw feeling that there could be some shared foundation between Google Alerts & CSE, in need of attention. Given that Easter is now rolling in, then ... I'm guessing that there'll soon be no actions at all - but, as you know, data/information/facts is good leverage in getting Google to act, so I think reporting is all there currently can be done for now.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||DarkUFO - Blogger Top Contributor||3/27/13 2:40 PM|
Hey no worries at all and thanks for the efforts, much appreciated.
Looking around the net it seems I'm not alone. Quite a few big tech sites have stories about this as well
Hope these help a little
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||DarkUFO - Blogger Top Contributor||3/30/13 1:25 AM|
Just to let you know that today I recieved my first Google Alert in months that had the full 25 Entries :)
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||JesseNewton||3/30/13 7:07 AM|
Some alerts have been starting to trickle in, but still nothing close to how it used to be. Something's working though! I've been getting two or three a day, when I used to receive 20 or 30.
|Re: Not receiving Google Alerts||NoAlerts||4/3/13 4:06 PM|
Any alternatives to Google Alerts? Yahoo! alerts died years ago.
I get results if I run a search live, but Google Alerts delivers nothing to me any more for my 30-40 alerts. Hurting my business.
Any service providing aggregate Alerts from Bing and Google?
I found a nice solution for Craigslist alerts that works great!
