What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Norma 3/2/13 9:38 AM
The old Advance Search Option for G.S. has been fading & most searchers, particularly students, aren't even aware of it so it has been getting harder to demonstrate it without a separate, direct link. Now I see that the "advanced search" is a little arrow on the right side of the search box, but that search lacks the ability to search within disciplines as we could earlier (e.g. limit to engineering results). This was a great service to my students in engineering. I hope it has not completely disappeared!

And now there is no ability to see 100 results in a page !
I am doing a systematic review and need that!

Hello Zahra,

For starters I would reset your results per page.

"Search Settings"

"Results per page"

After you reset it let us know if this fixes it for you.

Cheers,
Shannon

Hi Norma,

The feature to search within a discipline is no longer available. I've seen multiple people requesting this feature to come back, so I will be sure to pass your feedback along to the rest of the Scholar team.

Thanks!
Kousha

Yes, the "search within discipline" feature was absolutely essential to my ability to hunt for articles in and around my discipline.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? John DeLaughter 3/6/13 6:09 AM
I agree with Mi and Zahara. The changes to Google Scholar make no sense and actually degrade its usefulness. Please, PLEASE put it back the way it was!
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Harvey Reiter 3/6/13 5:39 PM
I echo that concern. The old Google Scholar (legal) advanced search allowed for searches of court opinions by federal circuit and by individual state court systems. I don't know how to replicate that feature now.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Amy Eaton 3/7/13 11:22 AM
This is awful. I use the advanced search feature all the time. Please bring back all the old functionality of Google Scholar. It was part of what made Google so much better than other search engines.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Rick Weisburd 3/11/13 5:09 AM
The old Advanced Search tool in Google Scholar was excellent and absolutely necessary for many purposes. PLEASE restore the functionality that you have apparently removed. Thanks.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? JD Manning 3/14/13 11:43 AM
I use Google Scholar on nearly a daily basis to conduct clinical research for my employer, a medical device manufacturer.  This new format, with its lack of discipline searches, renders it nearly useless, and I'll likely need to cease using Google Scholar unless this functionality is returned.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? n.v.s. 3/20/13 5:38 AM
I dont understand the point of hiding the advanced search options in a place that is hard to find and makes it impossible to directly bookmark the advanced seach.

also I am unhappy about the lack of the "show 100 results per page" option.

i have not used the limit to subject areas much, but I can understand if for some researcher it is crucial.

bring back the old Advanced Search, it was (more than) good enough!!

thanks a billion

Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? ronrott 3/27/13 7:26 AM
Horrible. I had come to rely on using the Advanced features to search legal opinions between and across jurisdictions. Now this is no longer possible. What could have motivated someone to remove such essential features?
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? George Apostolopoulos 3/29/13 8:58 AM
I fully agree with comments in this post.

Also in my case, GS is useless without the feature to search in specific disciplines.

GS should give more options & tools instead of restricting them.

I'd like to add my request for filtering by disciplines as well. BIOLOGY is a big enough science to break down into hundreds of categories, so having it just mixed up with ALL other sciences is an unbelievable hassle! Makes the search engine next to useless, in my opinion. Please fix it soon! Please and thank you. :)
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? n.v.s. 4/2/13 6:49 AM
Dear Shannon, thanks for the advice but this unfortunately only seems to change the settings for the normal google search, not for google scholar.
Are you somehow connected to google? I would very much appreciate if you could direct the attention of someone who can decide over these questions to the issues discussed in this thread (and elsewhere).
thanks,
Nik

Hi n.v.s., thanks for your feedback. Shannon is a Top Contributor in this forum, meaning that she is a trusted expert who posts collaboratively with Googlers. She brought your feedback to me (thanks, Shannon). I've read your ideas, and will share them with the Scholar team. Please let me know if there is any other feedback you have about Advanced Search or Scholar in general. Thanks!

Since the search within discipline option is gone, google scholar has become virtually useless to me. My results get flooded with natural science papers. Since I am in political science, these are useless to me and so google scholar has become a waste of time.

It is a mystery to me how the google scholar team could mess up this tool so badly.

Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Laura Hubbard 4/8/13 7:39 AM
Any news on this? I have a feeling you will lose a lot of folks over this one if it cannot be fixed quickly. Please update. Thanks.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Kousha N. 4/9/13 7:48 AM
Hi everyone, thanks for your patience. The advanced search already exists on every page, as well as support for legal jurisdictions. The limit by discipline, however, is gone for now, and we realize this makes it tough for social science folks. In short, bringing it back isn't an easy fix. While I can't promise you that it will be any time soon, we hear those of you that want this feature, and we'll take it into account as we work to improve what Scholar offers.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? ChristophS 4/9/13 6:44 PM
This is testimony for how out of touch google has become with its users. The loss of the search within discipline function is, I am sure, not only problematic for social scientists, but for virtually every scholar. As a result you are flooded with papers that are totally irrelevant for you. If google scholar had bothered to ask a few "scholars" before these changes were implemented, I cannot imagine how this mistake could have happened. Very disappointing, really.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? t torrence 4/11/13 11:59 AM
I found out about Google Scholar only (relatively)recently and found it surprisingly useful. BUT without discipline selection it will be much less useful.
What possible logical reason could there be for eliminating this feature?
Kousha?
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? lawyerno1 4/12/13 1:41 PM
The options (Articles / Legal Opinions & Journals) below the search bar in GScholar no longer appears on some compters (upon which it used to appear).  This is a recent occurrence and effects mutiple uses.  Any explanations as to why from the Scholar team?
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Greg Galanter 4/13/13 12:41 AM
Yes please - I have been searching the forums for days, and no explanation. Are they getting rid of this?
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? alistair h 4/13/13 4:46 PM
Adding my voice here - this is really frustrating. As I understand it, google scholar is aimed at scholars, and paring down the UI and functionality to better fit with Google's 'minimalist' ideals is not going to result in more people using this product. We're academics here, not children - I think we can all deal perfectly well with a more detailed Advanced Search screen.

The removal of discipline searching in particular renders this site essentially useless. Please, fix this ASAP. Revert back to the previous build entirely if you have to; if not, I'm gone.

Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? petrea 4/14/13 12:22 AM
really too bad!!! No search for specific language or area!!!!! Unbelievable!!!
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Joseph Gabriel 4/30/13 8:24 AM
Yes, this is horrible. GS used to be a really useful product - now its not. I'm a scholar and regularly used it to search legal and scientific material; it is now practically useless.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Kris Bachus 5/2/13 5:14 AM
I've read all the posts related to this question, still I haven't found the answer: how do I get back to the advanced search page for Google Scholar?
Thanks!
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Patrick Smyth 5/31/13 10:36 PM
This feature needs to come back. My searches are now flooded with irrelevant material.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Peter Gigante 6/14/13 10:14 AM
Scholars have inherently more complex research needs and Google really handicapped  this product needlessly.  They could have easily kept the standard simple search for newbies AND the advanced search for professionals.  Seems like it didn't have to be an either/or.  I hope they bring it back, especially the ability to limit by discipline and (for legal docs) by court.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Oneota 6/18/13 1:55 AM
I agree that Google is becoming less convenient to use.  I thank the person who explained where the tab for the extended search is hidden.  Until now, I had not noticed the tab and had been doing all sorts of work-arounds to get to this feature.  Google needs to bring back a label that says "advanced search."

Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Oneota 6/18/13 1:58 AM
"exists"  is not the same as "is visible."  Come on, Google, you should be improving, not falling apart.  People are now looking for options that are less intrusive, more useful, and better organized.
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? Oneota 6/18/13 2:04 AM
There is a tiny, unlabeled inverted triangle inside the search box (at the far right)  on the normal scholar search page.  click on that and (sometimes after a full-screen ad for something unrelated to searching) the remains of the extended search open up. (At least that is my experience now.)
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? petrea 6/18/13 7:45 AM
Yes, it is a very bad development that they are hideng more and more options! Why change something which was working fine as it was!!!!?
Re: What has happened to the Advanced Search Option in Google Scholar? panchocat 7/23/13 3:11 PM
I would like to say that I totally agree with all of these people who have commented about the advanced search tools. I never search anything without using several of the functions. It always made my searches way more accurate and relevant. I guess when and if they develop a Self Driving Car, then delete the GPS functions, {like they did too many advanced search features}, we’ll all crash into each other. Thanks a lot.
