Not seeing instant results for a certain query? Kelly F 9/14/10 10:10 AM
Hi everyone,

We've received some questions about why typing [lesbian] into the search box does not instantly show results. T
his is a bug and we are working to see if we can fix it. In the meantime, these results are available but require you to hit Enter.

For a wide variety of reasons, Google Instant sometimes instructs you to “Press enter to search.” While our algorithm often predicts your query correctly before you finish typing, it sometimes asks you to click “Search” or to press the Enter key to make sure that Google doesn’t show you results that you may not want to see.

Here’s a bit more info: Our new search-as-you-type results page is based on the autocomplete feature that we’ve had for a few years now. When you start typing, we show you the results for the first prediction we offer. We depend on an algorithm to determine whether or not a prediction appears for a given query and do not manually choose what shows up.

The algorithms we use to remove a prediction from autocomplete consider a variety of factors. Among other things, we exclude predictions for queries when the query itself appears to be pornographic, violent or hateful. Our algorithms look not only at specific words, but also at compound queries based on those words, and across all languages. So, for example, if there's a bad word in Russian, we may filter a compound word including the transliteration of the Russian word into English. Importantly, we also consider the search results themselves for given queries.

So, if the results for a particular query seem pornographic, our algorithms may remove that query from autocomplete even if the query itself wouldn't otherwise violate our policies. This system is neither perfect nor instantaneous, and we will continue to work to make it better.

To learn more about why you might not be seeing dynamic results for a specific query, please read the "Why don't I see results appear as I type?" section of the help article below.

Best,
Kelly

Hi Kelly, I just want to make sure the term [bisexual] is included in your bug fix?

PS I represent binetusa.org one of the first 5 results for the word bisexual, we advocate for bisexual americans!

It saddens me that Google who has removed such immoral things like bisexuality from their search suggestions; are adding exceptions because people who practice such things want to be recognized. Don’t be a push over google!

When I first realized that Google Instant was censoring these words, I was outraged; however, Google announced it was a bug and they were working on it. Ok, fair enough; most people are reasonable enough to understand that everyone makes mistakes. Yet here we are, almost half a year later...and "lesbian" and "bisexual" are still being censored, while "gay" and "transgender" are shown with no problem. Enough is enough, Google. It's amazing how homosexual male terms are considered "acceptable," while female terms are not.

"Among other things, we exclude predictions for queries when the query itself appears to be pornographic, violent or hateful."
--So words like "whore" and "fag hag" aren't considered pornographic, violent, or hateful...but "lesbian" and "bisexual" are?

@tanner cypret: Immoral is a subjective term; I consider people who try to impose their believes and judgements on others to be immoral. However, just because *I* think you're immoral doesn't give me the right to tell you to shut up. See how that works?
