Yahoo seems to have usurped Google and I don't know how to get Google back as my default search engine

It depends on your browser, and which part of the browser you are using for your search.
If you are using the search bar built in to your browser, refer to your browser's help menu to find out how to change the default search engine.
If you are using a search engine homepage, refer to your browser's help menu to find out how to change your home page to www.google.com .

How the hell does this pathetic response help?

Irishstorm1: without knowing which browser you are using, or how you are searching it's not possible to give more specific advice. See the reference for the help Google provides for this issue.

If you're using Firefox, be advised that the that the "about:config" fix method no longer works for some of the more recent Yahoo hijacks. The one that worked for me is actually simpler, though. First, make sure that the Navigation Toolbar is displayed (it contains the window in which the URL appears). You'll find the Search Bar on the Navigation Toolbar to the right of the URL: it's a window that has a magnifying-glass symbol on the right and a logo on the left (presumably the logo of Yahoo, if that's what hijacked your default search engine). Click on the logo for a dropdown menu of search engines, including Google. Make your selection, and the change takes effect immediately -- note the change of the logo on the Search Bar. To check the fix, select (highlight) a word or phrase in web-page text, and right-click on it. One of the options should be "search [your chosen engine] for [your selected text]. When you choose that option, results should open in your chosen engine.

I've tried just about everything and yahoo keeps popping back up

It seems to have nothing to do with the Search Bar next to the Navigation Bar. Ever since Firefox 4 came out, Yahoo is my default search engine if I just type what I'm looking for into the NAVIGATION BAR, which Firefox 3 used to just direct right to the page I wanted (example: typing "Benefit Cosmetics" into the navigation bar would direct me right to their website) or it would give me a Google search result list. Now if I type anything other than a complete url into the Navigation Bar, I get a Yahoo search result list and it's crazy-making. I don't use Yahoo because I really don't like how clunky and AOL-Esque Yahoo has become (I'm not a 65 year old white man,) and I also don't want to have to switch to Chrome because I just got Firefox 4 set up how I like it. (ReminderFox is the jam!) Has anyone found a fix for this since Firefox 4 came out?

Here's a how to change my search engine in my adress bar, location bar, URL bar for Google.
For all those who still struggle with the Yahoo being default search engine when typing something in the URL bar / location bar / Navigation bar that is not a complete URL (i.e. typing "why is yahoo default on firefox in my navigation bar" and press enter takes me to yahoo search result instead of google in previous versions), one of the ways i found to fix this problem easily is to just type http://google.com/search?q=
It fixed the problem for me immediately! I hate Yahoo, so i was pleased to finally have found the answer! The irony of it all, i found the solution on yahoo! answers hahah No need to mess with the about:config thingy.

The simplest answer of all is to delete Firefox and use Chrome as your browser. There's no sellout there. Google makes no bones that it's their browser and doesn't go sneaking around the backdoor to solidify the $ deal they've made with Yahoo, as Mozilla did. Not only a bloated browser, but bloated and dishonest executives.

There's a difference from making it your home page and making it your default search engine. Some of the answers here had to do with making Google your home page. I'll address the change of search engine.
When the search engine listed at the right of the address bar is not google. you can go to http://www.google.com/homepage/search/#start Thet gives you a button that you click to create an entry in the Search Options pulldown nifying glass (way over to the right of the page) Then, all you have to do is use the pulldown to Change Search Defaults, select Google from the list and click on Set Default.

PeteH91 Thank you so much! Unfortunately sometimes we don't get too many choices for the search providers. I have been searching for the correct answer for so long and you just gave it to us. I can't thank you enough!
