|BUG: Google auto-submits as soon as I type a single character.||NashvilleBassist||10/24/12 6:11 AM|
Hi guys -- unless I'm searching for 'S' or 'R' or something, this new feature is a tragic fail. When I go to Google.com, as soon as I start entering criteria into the search dialog, Google submits the form and searches for whatever the first character I types was. I'm running Opera v12.02 build1578 on XP and on Win7, and I get this behavior everywhere. No toolbar, and no dialog to alter the settings for 'instant'. I don't get this behavior with IE, however, so I'm guessing that the submission script is somehow executing a POST when it loads the dHTML for the 'instant' interface. Any idea how long before this bug s addressed?

You can switch off Google Instant by selecting "Never show Instant results" in Search Settings.
(Note that the settings menu is displayed only on the results page.)

Just a further qualification here:
If you aren't signed in to your Google account, and are using a local Google domain (i.e., other than google.com), you might need to set your search preferences to turn off Instant results in your local domain preferences as well.
For instance, if you're using google.co.uk to search, without signing in to your Google account, you might have to go to google.co.uk/preferences and switch off Google Instant results there as well.
Also be aware that, if you're using Google Chrome browser, there is a separate Chrome Instant setting which applies to searches from the address bar.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Thanks also to Bluequoll for keeping up on this. I just wanted to let you know that we're currently investigating this issue, and will come back with updates as soon as we have them.

I'm having the same exact problem. When i begin to type the first letter of whatever i'm searching google automatically searches for that single letter and the cursor jumps off the search field so i cannot continue typing my word without having to click back onto the search field. By the way i tried turning off the instant search and it didnt help.

I'm having the same problem. When i begin typing google searches for the first letter that i've typed and removes the cursor from the search field so i cannot continue typing my word. I have to click back in the search area to continue typing what i was looking for. I tried to turn off instant searches but that didnt help.
