|Does Google call businesses and warn them they may be blacklisteD?||RoseInMarketing||6/28/12 11:19 AM|
My boss received a phone call at the office today from the phone number 650-235-0000 warning us about a design flaw in our website that could cause us to be blacklisted from Google search in the near future.
If this is in fact true, we will act immediately, and it could be an authentic flaw in our website design.
However, we are in a highly competitive business, and we are concerned that the call may not have been authentic as the phone number goes to a busy signal when we try to call back, no contact information was provided, and we are receiving no warnings via email or Google Webmaster Central that there are any problems with our website.
Does anyone have experience with this? It is the first I have heard of Google calling businesses personally.

I would take no notice myself.

Never heard of it happening, dubious at best

Sounds bogus to me. There seem to be loads of companies touting for business and claiming they 'work with Google' etc.

was that the EXACT phrase being used? Scammer
It ain't Google. I get 2, maybe 3 calls per month using the Google name in some form (usually it is "we are authorized Google SEO advisers Male Cow Patties") telling us that because one of pages lacks an H1 tag that we are going to Hades when Google finds out. Shucks darn I haven't had an H1 tag on my home page for most of the past decade and it hasn't hurt us yet. Oh, and the idiots calling me don't like the fact that I can't find the authorization they claim to have listed anywhere on Google.com

Some time ago now - perhaps a few years - one of the Googlebods pointed out a site that performed very well in the SERPs.
The site in question didn't have a !DOCTYPE or <head> section at all, and not a single <Hn> either. The markup was, we might say, sparse and conformed as far as I could tell to HTML 3.2

To the best of my knowledge, no team at Google calls site owners with regards to web-search issues on their websites. From the web-search & search quality teams, we will sometimes contact websites with regards to technical, quality, or malware issues, but this is always via email, with a copy sent to your Webmaster Tools account for verification purposes.
That said, if you're aware of legitimate issues on your website, I'd work to have those resolved regardless :).
