Is there a problem close site in Shabbat for serp Dr-Mosko 11/21/13 2:04 AM
Hello all,
I developed a new Wordpress plugin that close the site for visitors by there ip location when it's Shabbat or Jewish holiday (not actually closed but it will generate on fly page with a message to come back later) ,
http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-shabbat/
google bot is allowed at all time by identify the ip domain
I got a lot of sceptic people that say google will penalize the site. Does it?

Hi Dr-Mosko,

no, closing the site on Shabbat shouldn't be a problem ... but I'd recommend to issue a status-503-(temporarily unavailable) in such cases because it's something Google understands quite well.

More on this and other HTTP status codes here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HTTP_status_codes

hello , luzie
actually I direct traffic base on userAgent if its a bot it will allow inside to the site all the time,
I did it because the site is always open, if  its shabbat in the us its not in asia, so site is closed when its shabbat based on the user location, and for google bot its never shabbat.
should i treat google the same as usa user? or asia user? or like a bot?

one idea you can leave your site live but disable shopping on shabbat , but is not ok to have site work on shabbat , you are not working or your worker , its like that you have rented a place to some one so they pay you for the whole month and shabbat is included but is ok !
good lock

Hi Dr. Mosko

We have an older discussion of this topic at http://productforums.google.com/d/topic/webmasters/theUs8RCvDg/discussion which might give you some ideas.

In general, when it comes to how you treat Googlebot, it's important to us that you treat it the same as other users from that location. Googlebot generally crawls from the US, so in those cases, you'd need to treat it like other users from the US. There's also a bit more about this at http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/020729.html including links to other resources in the comments.

Hope it helps!
John

thanks john,
if I treat google like us visitor it will cache "closed page" so i decided to treat it like another place that its not shabbat like in europe, so all the time the bot is free to cache the whole site.
the 503 will only tell the bot to come back later and cache the open site, isnt that the same?

Treating Googlebot as being something other than a normal user from the same location would be considered cloaking and would be against our Webmaster Guidelines. Using a 503 is fine in situations like this -- it's a sign that your website currently isn't available, and that Googlebot should come back a bit later.

Cheers
John
