Sitemap redundancy in URL count with Sitemap_index ? Leeza R 12/17/12 10:04 AM
I've read the FAQs and searched the help center.

Hi John and Mariya--Here is my Sitemap question from the Hangout:

In WMT we have 3 Sitemaps  for :
WP blog
main site (different CMS)
videos

To my knowledge none of the three Sitemaps have URL overlaps.  The total URL count from those three SiteMaps = 459 submitted, 454 indexed.

In WMT, we also have a /sitemap_index.xml which provides the list of the three xml Sitemaps.

WMT has added all four to display the number of submitted URLs= 918, which is exactly a double count of URLs. I have attached a screenshot of WMT for further clarification.  Is this OK, or am I doing something wrong? Thank you so much for any guidance you can give!

Summary:

/blog/sitemap.xml     157 submitted
/sitemap.xml            276 submitted
/video-sitemap.xml     26 submitted
---------------------------------------------------------
Total URLs               459 submitted

/sitemap_index.xml    459 submitted

WMT grand total       918 submitted  (double count)

I wonder if you somehow in effect submitted twice?

If you have a sitemap_index covering several sitemaps, you do need to submit those sitemaps individually.

Hi Leeza

I double-checked this with the team. This is apparently normal if you submit Sitemap files with the same URLs listed multiple times. Since submitting the same URLs multiple times doesn't change anything with regards to your site's crawling & indexing, I'd just submit it once if you want the correct counts (alternately, if the count doesn't bother you, you can also just leave it like this :)).

Cheers
John

YAY!  Thanks for the input --in that case we will keep the sitemap_index, and continue adding category specific Sitemaps for our soon to launch new redesign.

Have a great Holiday and thanks for your patient support in WMT and hangouts! My Googley son is home for Christmas :)

thanks!
