Google Search no longer recognizes my most important site. Why? iankilburn 9/8/12 10:13 AM
I host several websites. The largest, https://sites.google.com/site/waldorfwatch/, had for several years been recognized in Google searches. A few weeks ago, this changed. Google Search no longer recognizes the existence of the site, even though the site certainly does exist, it gets traffic, and it is recognized in Bing searches, etc. (When I say the site is not recognized, I mean a Google Search produces no hits. And a Google Advanced Search, in which I put the site's address on the "site or domain" line, produces this: "Your search - site:https://sites.google.com/site/waldorfwatch/ - did not match any documents." If, on the other hand, I enter the address for one of my other sites, e.g. https://sites.google.com/site/waldorfwatchannex/ , on the same line, I get plenty of hits.)

I have raised the issue in another forum but received no reply that seems to really address the problem. (The site is hosted at Google Sites. I have two other sites at Google Sites, and they are still recognized in Google searches. There seems to be no reason why one of my sites hosted by Google is suddenly treated differently from the others.)

The sudden disappearance of my most important site from the most important search service, Google Search, seems inexplicable. And, obviously, it is damaging to my site. Please, someone, help!

Hi iankilburn,

Sounds like you're having a tough time with a Webmaster issue.  Given that this is about your own site, I'm moving it over to the Webmaster Central forum.  (You might also want to check out the Help Center there, too.)

Thanks,
Jess

Please try the Google Sites help forum and ask there if your site complies with Google Sites terms and conditions.

Do you have the site verified in webmaster tools ?

And you say you dont have a sitemap listed in webmaster tools ? It says on this page  http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=100450 that your sitemap url should be > https://sites.google.com/site/waldorfwatch/system/feeds/sitemap - but that url returns an error. It would be helpful if you could get a sitemap listed with google webmaster tools here. I dont think you can create your own sitemap with google sites because of uploading it to the domain - but google sites forum would know more about that - can you ask them, and also ask them why your sitemap url returns an error and post back here ?

Hi cristina, squibble, and all:

Since Jess shifted me over here to a different group, maybe I should quickly give a rundown.

I have a site at Google Sites. For several years Google Searches recognized the existence of this site, and in fact my site often showed up near the top of various searches. Then, suddenly, poof — Google Searches no longer recognizes the site. In fact, it says no documents match the site's name. But the site still exists and still gets traffic. (Bing, etc., still recognize it and produce hits on it.)

Even more perplexing: I have two other sites at Google Sites. They are satellites to my main site, the one that has gone poof. Google Search still recognizes them.

As far as I know, I did nothing to cause this. As far as I know, all three sites are (or should be) in exactly the same condition. Thus, for instance, I have never submitted a site map for any of the sites. Also, all three show up when I got to Webmaster Tools, and all three are marked "no problems" (or words to that effect).

So, I'm mystified. I don't know why one of my sites (the most important one) has disappeared from Search or why it is being treated differently from the other two sites. So I don't know what to do. Help! Anyone, help!

--------

P.S. Today I have tried to experimentally submit a sitemap for one of my satellite sites, to learn how. (I don't dare experiment with my main site, which represents literally MANY years of hard work.) I have tried to follow the instructions on the Sites Help page "Submitting a sitemap to Google Webmaster tools" [http://support.google.com/sites/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=100283I immediately hit some problems. Step 3 speaks of a radio button and "Add a meta tag." But when I complied with Step 2, it did not send me to a page with such a button or any mention of meta tags. Instead, it sent me to a verification page that said the recommended procedure is to upload an html file. Step 1 on this page was to download an html verification file. I did that. Step 2 is to upload this file to my site. But there is no indication of how to do this. Can anyone tell me how?

Bear in mind, please, this question is much smaller than my main question, above. I want to do whatever I must, but I would also like to know why any of this is necessary. Two of my sites are still AOK, Google Search still recognizes them, and I haven't been required to submit site maps for them. But my main site is in big trouble, and I don't know why.

Thanks!

Hi squibble.

Thanks for your questions. I will try to pass them on to sites forum.

I have not posted any sitemaps for any of my sites nor have I verified any. These things were never required of me before, and they seem to be required now for just one of my three sites. All three sites show up, in apparently exactly the same condition, on the Webmaster dashboard. I don't know whether this means that they are "verified" or not. As I said in my previous post, I hit a wall as soon as I tried to verify one of my lesser sites.

(Please bear with me, everyone. I am a computer idiot. I am 65 and none of this is natural to me. I don't even know what most of the terminology means. But I'm trying.)

Please confirm -

have you verified the site in webmaster tools ? Can you see data ?

I think that this url should be the url of your sitemap > https://sites.google.com/site/waldorfwatch/system/feeds/sitemap  Please ask in google sites forum whether that is true and if so, why it doesnt work. and post back here the response.

Hi. I posted your previous message there. No replies yet. I will also post your latest message.

No, I have not verified the site. I haven't figured out how (see my previous post; also my PS, below). My stupidity i tripping me up, I guess. (Unless there is actually some problem in the Google system.)

I am looking at the Webmaster Tools page now [https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en]  It shows all three of my sites:

"No new messages or recent critical issues" appears under each site.

For the first and third site, if I go to the dashboard, I get information under "crawl errors" and "search queries". Neither site has a sitemap, even though both sites show up in Google searches.

For the middle site — the problem site, my main site — the dashboard shows info under "crawl errors" but "no data available" under "search queries" and no site map.

Thanks for you help! I need it, obviously.

P.S. This morning, trying to follow the instructions on "Submitting a sitemap to Google Webmaster tools" [http://support.google.com/sites/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=100283], and intending to verify https://sites.google.com/site/waldorfstraighttalk/, I used the "Add a site button" (which seemed wrong to me, but answer=100283 said to do this). I began the process of verification, but got stopped by the requirement to upload the HTML verification file to the site — no directions were given on how to do this. Anyway, the upshot is that https://sites.google.com/site/waldorfstraighttalk/ now appears twice on the dashboard, once at the top of the list and then again at the bottom of the list, in this case with "not verified" stamped on it. In other words, I see:

The image for the second iteration of Waldorf Straight Talk has "not verified" stamped on it.

Webmaster seems to think I have two different sites with the same name and address. I need to clear this up, I guess by deleting the "not verified" version. Should I do this? If I delete the "not verified" version, will the actual version (at the top of the list) remain?

I would not worry about the sitemap unless you see the sitemap url working okay.

I am trying to see if anyone can shed some light on this issue so hold tight for a little bit.

Thanks very much!

Hi.

Any word yet?

(This is really painful for me. My site, which had been attracting pretty good traffic, has not yet been restored to Search. Among other things, I suppose this means the site will have a lower ranking after it is restored, having lost all potential traffic for several weeks.)

I am grateful for your help!

P.S. I've received no answers to your questions at google sites forum. Sorry. I'll pass them along if/when I get them.

I have forwarded this query and so hopefully we should hear something soon enough.

Thanks for forwarding, Squibble!

Iankilburn, it looks like this was an issue one our side. It should be resolved in the meantime, and from what I can tell, pages from the site are now appearing in search again, so you should be all set soon! In general, with issues like these, it's always possible to submit a reconsideration request to have someone on our side take a look.

Cheers
John
