For Mobile apps, what device and carrier are you using?
?". No matter how many times I click block caller it doesn't say it's blocked or block the call. Yet its the exact same string of numbers when I try to block calls from the same "Unknown" caller earlier in the day. I've added it to spam as well every time yet it still shows up as a missed call. Several times a day. Thank you for any help or I hope this can be fixed soon!Unknown.b9dc75be8e0ce3e363483c2fbb3f717748d08d10

There are two levels of blocking. You're selected the "spam" blocking options which don't really block the caller, it just sends the caller to your voicemail directly, without ringing your phone, then places an entry in your spam folder.
The other block feature is a true block. The caller is presented with a telephone company type recording announcing that "...the number reached is no longer in service..." followed by a hang up. There is no option for the caller to leave you a voicemail, the caller thinks your number is not in service.

Google Voice: blocking unwanted calls

If you'd like to help. That'd be great! Otherwise please don't waste anyone's time. Thank you but you need to re-read my post John. Blocking or even marking these (Unknown) calls as spam appears to be broken. I can't even make it a contact so your link doesn't help and I'm not interested in workarounds. If someone can help me block this that's great!! If not please help someone else. Thanks!
By the way, just because I'm not listed as a "Top Contributor" doesn't mean I'm a novice. I checked all the common posts and found a few similar but none with a resolution/fix. I hope to find one with my own post.

UPDATE: Call frequency has increased and would really like a solution to this!? Would hate for this to be the straw that breaks the camels back..! Such a great service overall, It seems odd it is taking so long to fix this. Can anyone help? I can't even file a police report because I don't know the number or who's calling but I'd be more than happy with just being able to block the calls.
|John of Lower Merion||11/3/11 7:32 AM|
Even though you don't see the actual phone number displayed, it is imbedded in each call's data stream and Google sees it and knows the offender's phone number (that's how Google generated the long character string "Unknown" that you refer to, it is a unique identifier for that caller using that one telephone).
You should be able to click that call in Received or History and select Add Contact, then use the drop down list to block that caller in your Contacts list.

I'm sorry but I really wish you would stop replying to my question John. If you really had an answer it would be great but you don't. I appreciate the attempt to help but it seems you didn't bother again to read my original post. Almost like your just trying to increase you post count.
Anyway, I added the the long character sting mainly for Google to see if they happen to look at this post and to let others know that there is a string being generated but its still not letting me block it! It is the same sting every time too. Doesn't matter how I try to, I am also unable to add it as a contact. That option is not available. Thanks to anyone with some new idea's.

Still no one able/wiling to help with this? Guess I'll keep looking and checking back. I just received 4 calls in a row within an hour from the same Unknown caller I've been having all the trouble with. Im going to speak with the Sheriff's department and my local States Attorney and see if they can do anything to at least reveal who's calling so I can go after them. I would still very much appreciate the ability to simply block these calls though!
|PL20100719||11/10/11 9:35 PM|
I am encountering the exact same problem. I have an Unknown caller that I have already blocked. The caller shows up as "Unknown.ddd44e70a6302d9284f3801c78a9dd112ce47c61?" and I have repeatedly applied the GV feature to "Block Call". The calls go straight to my Spam folder, but the call still rings on my phones. A number of times, the caller has left a voicemail with just background noise.
Unlike other Unknown callers that GV has successfully blocked, this particular caller "Unknown.ddd44e70a6302d9284f3801c78a9dd112ce47c61?" still gets through. And they call daily at around 9pm. It is annoying! I would also appreciate some help with this.
|drwho1983||11/11/11 6:18 AM|
Update 2: Call frequency has decreased to about two calls a day. One right between 8-9am and one between 8-9pm. I've also been hearing complaints from some of my customers that they are getting the same or similar calls. The few that emailed me, the string of characters are different from mine, like PL20100719 posted above. It would be just awesome if an employee wouldn't mind taking a minuet to give us all his/her two cents on this or help us all fix the problem ourselves if that's at all possible. I'm still waiting... Thanks!
|drwho1983||11/16/11 3:52 PM|
Just in case someone see's this and also I'm afraid of the thread being closed for inactivity. So, here's another update: Calls have increased to between 5 and 10 a day. All from the same Unknown number or at least the string thats generated is always the same as the one I've posted above. All I can do is ask that this please be fixed! Thanks!!
|JonathanLovesCats||11/17/11 6:26 PM|
Hi drwho1983 -
There's a 'Block caller' option in the 'More' link on your call history… just select the call you wish to block.
Are you not seeing this?
|drwho1983||11/18/11 5:29 AM|
First, Thank you very much for commenting JonathanLovesCats. I do appreciate the attempt. However it appears just as John of Lower Merion, you seem to not have read the entire thread. Or even my first original question/problem. To answer your question, yes I'm am seeing this "Block Caller Option" and no it's simply not working at all when talking about blocking the Unknown caller I mention above, This is on Googles end not mine! I'm no novice and unless a feature was added since I posted this problem there's nothing I can do on my end! Please someone that will actually read the thread help us out! Thanks!
|JonathanLovesCats||11/21/11 9:25 AM|
Just so I'm clear - despite the messaging you're still receiving calls from this blocked number?
|drwho1983||11/21/11 9:37 AM|
Well, you'r close. I'll take you through it step by step:
1. I get a missed call from "Unknown". (No number with the name)
2. I click on more and choose "Block Caller". It shows me this: "Are you sure you want to block Unknown.b9dc75be8e0ce3e363483c2fbb3f717748d08d10?.
3. I click on block and It acts like its going to block it and the "Unknown" call moves from my inbox into spam, however it still doesn't say "Blocked" next to "Unknown" like it does for every other call I've blocked in the past.
4. In the spam folder (NOT THE INBOX), if I click on more and then "Block Caller" a second time the same thing happens except it stays in the spam folder and it still doesn't say "Blocked".
5. I'm almost certain that its the same caller every time for this particular "Unknown" call because the string of characters that it shows before I click "Block" is exactly the same every time. I have hundreds of them now in my spam folder. Most "Unknown" calls in the past I've been able to block no problem. Just not this one: Unknown.b9dc75be8e0ce3e363483c2fbb3f717748d08d10? Getting super annoying running to check my phone and seeing this call all the time.
Thanks for attempting to help JonathanLocesCats. I know I'm not the only one with this problem, I'm seeing posts pop up all over the place with people complaining/looking for a solution.

I'm sure this is small comfort, but I have recently started to have the same problem....four calls in the last two days. I've tried to block it but continue to get calls and the user does not show as "blocked" in my spam folder. The especially odd thing is the number has called both my main and my secondary GV number (which is on the way out after porting my number to GV).
Will be THRILLED when this issue is resolved!
|drwho1983||1/18/12 3:00 PM|
Still the same problem with the same Unknown caller!! Please fix this, sometimes they call up to 10 times a day and no one is ever there and I can't call it back if I wanted to! Here's what I'm still getting for a number when I try to block the call: Unknown.b9dc75be8e0ce3e363483c2fbb3f717748d08d10
|GCentral||2/3/12 12:08 PM|
The very same problem here. Some system seems to be trying to check my number for validity again and gain. It comes up as Unknown caller with that unique string appended. Blocking does not work because GV, seems like is treating any call without a number as unblockable. It could be difficult to ban unknown number completely as there are genuine cases when sometime VOIP calls or international calls dont have any caller id information. A possibility might be to allow users to choose whether they want to block unknown callers completely.
|eschel||2/4/12 12:36 PM|
Add me to the list of recent recipients of these calls from
I've gotten 4 such calls in the last three days. Ugh. From the looks of things for other users this problem may just get worse.
I really hope not...
|drwho1983||2/9/12 7:08 AM|
Still the same issue from what appears to be the same caller:
Just trying to keep this thread alive in hopes that Google will one day notice and somehow fix this!
|eschel||2/9/12 8:05 AM|
Indeed. I now get the damned things once or twice per day, and given what I'm reading in these threads (and there are several of them), I'm dreading the increase in volume...
|Nikki73||2/9/12 5:58 PM|
I am also getting the same thing and I want it to stop mine is Unknown.b547f5fe4dbbe88f8f13a6d36f9025927ce5e063. When I answer they hang up and call at strange times. I hope they get this fixed soon.

Does your google voice # or the actual caller's # show up on your phone when you have an incoming call?
Google has the option of having your google voice # or the caller's # show up when you receive a call.
If you set it to show the caller's # then simply use mr number app to block all unknown/private #'s.
Maybe this would work. I haven't tried it because I use my google # for business and I have mines set to show the google # so that I know its someone calling for business.
Let us know if that works.
|drwho1983||2/25/12 7:08 PM|
Stop wasting everyone's time please. Only a higher level or Google Employee can fix this problem. Those of us having this issue have tried everything possible. Besides.. I think I speak for at least most of us that were not looking for a workaround. You sound more like a rep for Mr. Number than trying to help. Oh and by the way.. for everyone else, in case it wasn't obvious I'm still having the same problem!!!
|pggonzo||3/7/12 10:22 AM|
Having the same issue, calls come at all hours of the day Unknown.3b3963dff027d4466154e90c734864bbf1de1763
|MrEks||3/15/12 2:29 PM|
Same problem. Calls are being forwarded to my cell phone, which shows a phone number of "000". When I block in GV, it asks if I want to block "Unknown.db63e65af8229bc803c5f54612a6adb6fcdb6d86". I always do. I always keep getting these "000" calls. Numerous times a day. Getting really tired of it. Please fix, Google.
|spetey||3/20/12 3:48 PM|
Bump. Same issue, different "Unknown" code. My iPhone just buzzes with a missed call from "Unknown". It never actually rings - and in fact, it doesn't seem to ring even when I'm on Gmail on a desktop, with Google Voice active. When I look at Google Voice's history, it's always the same Unknown hex code. (Are we sure this code is unique to the caller, and not to the receiver?) I block it each time to no avail.
|normka||3/22/12 9:55 AM|
I've started getting the same calls. Same deal, same story. I don't know how to block. I also don't know whether these calls are originating with my GV number or a phone number I have that forwards to the GV number.
|coolnezz||3/28/12 12:23 PM|
Same problem here. Unknown Caller once or twice a day between 8-9am or 8-9pm.
I've done every imaginable ways to attempt to block it but to no avail.
|Savy13||4/30/12 7:10 AM|
Same problem as everyone else here... Hopefully Google will pay attention to their customers soon.
|CharlieTOO||4/30/12 11:49 AM|
Hello all, I'm having the same problem... different string of numbers. A couple of things I might be able to share, but which will no doubt still leave us with the same problem. First I spoke with a computer friend of mine who referred me to GV... he informed me that there are phishing-bots out there out to collect valid phone numbers to sell to telemarketers. Just like viruses, these people are constantly developing programs to work around the "opt-out, blocks, etc." I don't understand networking enough to give more detailed information.... what I am hoping to accomplish with this post is to increase the number of people so maybe we can find a way to get Google's attention. They could easily modify their program to give the option to block all unkown callers... if they were so inclined. Customer satisfaction surveys, feed back, etc. ... we need them to help us with this. Personally, my feelings on unknown callers is this... if you don't want me to know who you are, then I don't want to hear what you have to say to me... I NEVER answer hidden callers anyway... so the option to block them should exist. My unknown's string: Unknown.a6ecd3ba519e03db3d277b2c47f6d234178a145c
|Ojai||5/14/12 8:57 AM|
Same issue here. Getting 4-6 Unknown calls that I can't block. When I pick up no one is there.
I try to block and get this:
But it doesn't actually work.
Google, help me with this. This should be basic functionality
|drwho1983||5/14/12 10:30 AM|
To everyone out there... yes I'm still having the same issue. However after all this time. It has slowed to about 3-5 calls a week instead of more than that a day. Still the same string of numbers and I've determined (using my own methods) that my unknown caller was eBay Collections trying to collect on a dispute from over 2yrs ago in which Visa and PayPal ruled I was a victim of fraud and don't owe eBay anything. There's also nothing on my credit about it. Yet eBay still randomly tries to extort money from me.
Anyway, I agree this should be able to be blocked. I'm not sure as to what could be taking so long. My only guess would be that it's more technical than I can understand, or maybe Google plans on having an Enterprise level or paid for level of Google Voice one day and perhaps that feature will only be there. Who knows, only Google.... Would be great if someone had a chance to let us know whats going on.
As of now, there's only two companies that I was able to find that can bypass Google Voice call blocking. Thats eBay and oddly enough Wells Fargo. Never know.. figure the additional info may help someone. I don't plan on posting again until I find a fix.

Thank you, that should help! Looks like I can't block the anonymous calls, but I can set them to not forward to any of my phones. Sounds like then they'd pile up in my inbox and I'll have to go in and delete them, but that's definitely an improvement.
|drwho1983||6/6/12 10:45 AM|
Whats ++ supposed to mean?
|drwho1983||6/6/12 10:47 AM|
Also, although my "Unknown" calls seem to have stopped for the moment anyway.. If I go back to my history and try and block one of the old "Unknown" calls that I was unable to block before it still doesn't work. Also, there's no way for me to save or add this particular "Unknown" call to any list to be filtered/blocked. So for me, this is not a solution in the slightest bit. Thanks, hopefully it will help some and maybe one day there be a fix for me too!
