|sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||sandra.dickenson||3/23/09 7:36 AM|
With such a large percentage of the general population in the "over 40" age bracket I would LOVE to see the ability to enlarge the font on the navigational sidebar. I have figured out I can redo everything I have already added to the Navigational Area into a Text Area but that is proving a bit cumbersome. I am new to Google site building and am enjoying the ease of use, however, because our non-profit organization is funded under the FEDERAL Older Americans Act, our members are well over 55 yrs.
They REALLY NEED a larger font size in order to read the website text, either because they are using the computer at a senior center or library or because they are unfamiliar with or find the handicap settings on their personal computer too complex. Anyway thanks for the opportunity to post regarding a SOLID NEED for a larger Navigational font. Meanwhile I will hand work our site pages' sidebars into a Text Box so that site navigation it is readable to our demographic users.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||annice.g||7/7/09 4:20 AM|
I agree 100%. Almost all the end users of my site (when it is finished) will be over 60, with many over 80!
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Charleo||8/20/09 9:42 AM|
I am 31 and could use a larger Navigation Text size. My DPI is currently set at 96 or whatever the default is, just seems that the Navigation Window's text is smaller than it should be.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Derrick Farnell||11/30/09 12:06 AM|
It seems odd that Sites doesn't allow users to change this - even aside from legibility, I personally think that the current font size is too small from an aesthetic point of view:
And while I could use a sidebar text box for my navigation links, and then choose the font size, such a system would of course not highlight which of the options is the current page.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||kapuskasing||12/1/09 7:03 AM|
I'd like to change the font size on the sidebar. I've also had clients ask me how......
This is a small but important change as it highlights the limitation of the Google sites setup.
Is this not an easy fix for the programmers?
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Golden Knight||12/2/09 2:07 PM|
I would like it bigger as well. It looks to small to me. Out of all the options this one is not included, was this an oversight on Google's part?
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Derrick Farnell||12/2/09 2:13 PM|
It is indeed odd... :)
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||donphinney||12/9/09 1:30 AM|
So is there an answer to this problem? is there someone on the sites development team that reads this or should we post somewhere else to get an answer?
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Golden Knight||12/18/09 11:34 AM|
There is someone from Google that reads the stuff in this section
There is work around to have large links:
Click "edit sidebar", then "add a sidebar item" and select "text box", Then add the links you want, in the size you want.
Not really want I am after, but it is away of having larger links.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Derrick Farnell||3/16/10 4:00 PM|
I'm surprised that this problem still exists.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||amyvox||6/23/10 4:11 PM|
These tiny nav links are awful! Users of my site say they didn't even understand that that was the navigation!
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||mmoore5760||7/13/10 12:10 PM|
I also am looking to enlarge the font on the Navigation sidebar. It's WAY too small for my liking. Why can we customize everything else, but not that too??? That seems so strange!!! Come on, Google...help us out!!!
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||sandra.dickenson||9/15/10 4:04 PM|
I dont see how anyone can tell what resolution most people use. I do know that google has provided ways to change font sizes on other ares but not this one. I am waiting for a fix so that my 50 elderly members don't have to learn how to change their resolution just to see one side bar on this one site. Please Google!
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||fredofred||9/17/10 3:16 PM|
I want all the fonts to be bigger and I'm not even 30. Reading tiny fonts is tiring - the default fonts are only size 10, which is really the smallest I'd use.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||liquidlover||12/16/10 12:14 AM|
I am a user experience designer and this is ridiculous. Google needs to consult with my company humaniche. They should be embarrassed. Who cares about new features like horizontal menus when you can't even read the vertical. I feel everyone's pain.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||cibola123||1/14/11 3:27 PM|
I agree. The designer or designers responsible are incompetent. Or did Google use a Work Experience trainee on this part? Even my 20 year old sons say the text is way to small. Looks unprofessional too. Should be very simple to reprogram it, so why the delay?
The suggested workaround above is messy.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Derrick Farnell||1/14/11 11:00 PM|
It's almost two years since the first post in this thread.
I don't understand why Google couldn't at least just state whether or not they are planning to do anything about this.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Robbie Wheeler||2/5/11 4:42 AM|
hi guys the is a way to do this but you just have to use links in a text box (i no it sucks) and you cant do drop down menues but still its one option. if you want i more advanced web designer use webs.com as they have custom css. the problem with webs thu is it has adverts and watermarks on your site. Hopefully google will allow you to enlage the nav bar font soon. (its been 3 years so i dount it)
Hope this helped.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||steve13565||2/11/11 8:29 AM|
I too am looking for a way to change the font size. The existing navigation bar does so many good things, that I hate to give it up because my users are complaining about the small font size. THis has been going on for at least two years that I noticed. Can't we get it fixed.
I have been searching for a third party gadget to replace the official one. Haven't found one yet.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||kieriekd||2/16/11 3:43 AM|
Add a side bar item called Text. Size the text font and colour, etc. Link it to you pages.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||ssg13565||2/16/11 6:48 AM|
Adding a sidebar text box is a good stopgap measure.
However it lacks several features of the navigation gadget.
1. The navigation gadget can automatically adapt to additional pages on the web site.
2. With the navigation gadget, the item in the navigation bar that corresponds to the page you are currently viewing is no longer a link. This makes it look different from the other items so that you can use it as a clue to what page you are on.
How the heck hard would it be for google to fix the problem after years of complaints?
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Jim55545||3/29/11 2:28 PM|
Damn...I hoped to find some trick to enlarge the navigation panel font here. It's a shame that Google did nothing about this problem for so long time.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Sandy Says||4/6/11 10:13 AM|
Not the "right" solution, but one you might consider... I created a page explaining how to use the CTRL and + keys to increase the view. Then I added a Text Box titled "Need Larger Print?" and linked the page to "Click here" text. Let me know if you like or see flaws with this option...
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Derrick Farnell||4/19/11 10:41 PM|
We neglected to mark the two-year anniversary of the original post.... :-)
Perhaps we should start organising something now for the three-year anniversary.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||ssg13565||4/20/11 6:39 AM|
For this and many other reasons, I switched over from a Google site to using Drupal on my paid for hosting account with another service. It is so so much easier to use PayPal on a non-Google site..
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||dnsdickenson||4/22/11 8:44 PM|
I would agree that Google us not interested in changing this, unwilling to improve it and totally disinterested in this user help forum. So I too will vote with my feet. I'm tearing down the Google site and moving it over to another server. Oh, well, it's a free one and they lost the opportunity for me to upgrade to a paid Google site.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||steel999||7/1/11 11:40 PM|
I too am in need of this fix. My site seems to think that 10pt font is the same as 8pt and the sidebar reflects this error and displays at 8pt - even tho it thinks its 10pt. So, I suspect the sidebar was to be 10pt, but acutally shows up as 8pt. Anyhow, fix it now please.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||mr.moncrief||7/26/11 1:14 PM|
Come on Google! Fix it!
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||03303032||9/8/11 2:14 AM|
I also need this fix NOW!!!! So move your ass Google!
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Derrick Farnell||9/8/11 3:08 AM|
The original post was created two and a half years ago, so I think we can assume that they're not going to implement this request.
I don't see why the font size can be adjusted in every other area of the site but this one.
Perhaps Google considers having larger font in the navigation to be bad design for some reason, but surely we should be free to create badly designed sites if we want to.
Having said that, I can't imagine why having larger font size in the navigation menu would be bad.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||FabriceL||10/6/11 11:14 AM|
Google, please! This might look like a "small issue" (lol) but accessibility of website is crucial.
The font size is especially small if you start using fancy webfonts that Google started offering (and which is great!!)
Don't forget to allow both choice of font and font size in all Menus (Horizontal or Vertical)

Please fix it google
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||NewSiteUser||11/8/11 1:54 PM|
Ok, I think I found the answer to increase the size of the Sidebar font. See below:
1. Access Edit Sidebar
2. Select Colour & Font
3. Select Sidebar Gadgets/ Sidebar gadget font / Choose "custom" / Change to "Goblin One"
4. Select Sidebar title font size / select custom / change the size to 18 or above.
It actually worked for me. The TEXT IS LARGER!!!!!
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Derrick Farnell||11/9/11 1:55 AM|
Putting aside that I don't want to use Goblin One font, this method doesn't change the font size of the links in the navigation box, only the size of the box title.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||NewSiteUser||11/10/11 7:42 AM|
Item to note, if you select other fonts, the size does not change. Please explain "the font size of the links" . My sidebar has titles so where do you see the links?
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Derrick Farnell||11/10/11 7:49 AM|
The problem we're having is with the font size of the page links inside the navigation box, not the font size of the navigation box title.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Anticorro||11/11/11 1:53 AM|
Goblin One - its shocked font... I on the whole site do not want a different font, but only Verdana.
Problem Nr. 2: Most fonts are not multilanguage - its problem with polish, czech, slovenian,… ščřžýáíéů
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||DuraznoDan||11/17/11 9:28 AM|
Just read this entire thread. As a new sites user, I scoured the sites' tools menus hoping to find that I could change the navigation font size in the sidebar. I was astonished that I could not. I agree with the posters here who want this control. It's hugely absurd that this is not available. Bye-Bye google sites.
My site is looking really good, except the navigation bar. So very, very frustrating. I noticed in the past couple of years (I'm 43) that I need larger and larger font because my eyes are getting worse. To be able to show people my navigation in large font is fundamental. Unbelievable oversight from google. Very disappointed.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||jabrwoky||11/17/11 7:56 PM|
Wow, I just traveled the same path as the rest of you. Spent hours working on my site, (noticed they made some enhancements to the UI, thanks!) , finally got down to the sidebar font size, could not change it, looked here..., well at least I'm not alone.
I'm sad, but I guess you get what you pay for. These are free sites, I'm not paying for customer support, so I can't really expect them to address this. But they are addressing other things, this one can't be that hard!
Unfortunately, if Google is offering these free sites in order to get all of us to develop sites that get more people to interact with Google applications (and see more ads), too bad. This is a killer for me because not only am I getting older, but the people I was expecting to visit this site are all retired and need to be able see what's on the screen.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Mats H||11/22/11 11:09 AM|
When will get a response from Google. We are interested in using google site but this is critical issue since it is difficult to navigate the pages with such small fonts on a iphone.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Jim55545||11/22/11 12:45 PM|
Mats H, you must assume that we won't get any response from Google and that you should apply one of the available workarounds for this issue.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||rbassett||1/19/12 7:31 AM|
Just to keep this topic open, I can't use the text box work around as that is for the side bar only and my customer wants a top navigation bar. PLease google - sites is a great tool for education establishments, please help make it more useable. Thanks.

I gotta say google. This is really pathetic.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||Jacky L||2/3/12 4:05 PM|
Hello, I've found a workaround to have the navigation sidebar's font size to match the font size of the content using the Subpage listing gadget. However, this solution does not highlight your current page in the sidebar.
Basically take out the sidebar, and instead put a Subpage listing gadget in each of your pages. The Subpage listing gadget will size accordingly with your content font size. To have the gadget on the left side, just create a two column table and put the side bar on the left cell, and the rest of your page in the right cell. You can change the width of the sidebar in the gadget's settings, and hide the new table boarders by editing html.
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||wjbite||2/25/12 5:13 PM|
It is my opinion that the SIDEBAR NAVIGATION GADGET is way too complicated to be able to program in the usual resizing tool that we are used to. I will give Google the benefit of the doubt on this.
However, If you go to the MANAGE SITE > COLORS AND FONTS > SIDEBAR NAVIGATION FONTS (that path is from memory and might not be totally complete or correct)
you will find by clicking on the CUSTOM button a VERY LONG drop down menu appears with maybe hundreds of fonts available for selection.
Happily, you will find that the menu clearly displays each font name in all of its glory with the size and form as that font that be displayed if you select it. So it is a fairly painless process to peruse all of the fonts to find the best for you.
I found that there were several larger and bolder fonts that made the NAVIGATION MENU entries much easier to read.
So, after lots of false starts and much web searching, I am now a happy camper.
I hope that most of you will find this an acceptable solution for you.

|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||LizD514||7/15/12 4:07 PM|
All you have to do is create a text box in the sidebar. Then write out everything you want as a link.
THEN make it the size you want. THEN link each word to the correct page... can all be done in the SAME textbox.
EASY PEASY! Took me 2 minutes to completely refigure my "navigation"

My "solution" has been to change each of my page titles to all-capitals. Readability is now good enough, and the impact on the site's overall look isn't terrible.

You can now change the font size of gadgets in the sidebar
|Re: sidebar text is WAY TOO SMALL in navigation box||RA365||6/7/13 5:25 AM|
I now see a control to change the sidebar gadget's font size. But for me, the control setting has no actual impact the sidebar gadget's font size.

Next I need Bold Font!
