|Bulk upload to Picasa Web Albums via my browser (Google Chrome)||slwilson73||12/22/08 7:40 AM|
Is there a work-around that will allow me to bulk upload photos to an album on Picasa Web Albums using my new browser of choice - Google Chrome? I saw in your documentation that this was available for Internet Explorer (which I was previously using and successfully bulk uploading my photos). But I would prefer not to use IE now if at all possible. Please advise. Thank you.

The 'Uploader Controls' uses Active-X, which is specific to Internet Explorer. There is no Chrome-specific bulk uploader.
If you're using a PC, I'd suggest using Picasa 3 upload button. That way IE can just be in the background but you can use the browser of your choice.

If you are doing a lot of uploading there is the option of using Picasa 3.5.

I don't want to download Picasa, and am sticking to Flickr until Picasa Web albums has a bulk uploader.

Hi nico barry,
I respect your decision to not wanting to install the Picasa client. If you have no aversion to using Internet Explorer, you can install the activex upload control to do bulk upload.

Thanks, Phil KL!
I actually decided in the end to download Picasa for other reasons, and also because I was having hassles with Flickr's bulk uploader. I'm glad I did, as Picasa seems to be a really great product. But I never would have known if Flickr hadn't been malfunctioning, and I Picasa would have lost me as a user, since the activex solution doesn't seem to be on the How To Upload page with all the other options for uploading. Plus, forcing someone to use IE is cruel and unusual.
Anyway, now that I have Picasa installed, I like the level of control it gives me over uploading pictures of whatever quality I want. Very nice!

There is a big downside to installing and using Picasa 3.x if you are an XP user. Picasa stores all its photo data in the boot drive. If you have a machine where the boot drive (such as C:) is partitioned small and the rest of the drive holds your data, Picasa can quickly fill your root drive with its own data. Picasa will not allow you store its data anywhere else (note that I am NOT talking about your pics - you can store those anywhere - I am talking about the album and photo info and thumbnails it creates for its own use).
The crux of the problem is that XP will not let you expand the partition for the root drive without wiping your hard drive. And Picasa will only put its info in the root drive partition.
The problem is documented in other areas of the forum. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way and had to delete several years of data when my computer stopped functioning. I have not yet found another free program that is as good as Picasa, but maybe someone else has been down this road and has some advice. I really loved Picasa, used it all the time, but I won't use Picasa again until they fix the problem, or I switch to another operating system, which I guess Google is counting on...

I was hoping to find a bulk uploader trick for chrome, but only found this. I eventually had to install Picasa 3 for Mac and used that to upload pictures. One problem I had with the software was that there is no option not scan for pictures, only "Scan Whole Computer" and "Scan Personal Folders". This is ridiculous.

In Picasa3, go to Tools ==> Folder Manager. You can select the specific folder you want Picasa to work with.

I just bulk-uploaded pictures using Chrome and my gmail account. In the settings tab of your picasaweb account you can allow email upload. Then, from gmail you can add more than one attachment at once and send them to the given email address.
The only remaining question obviously is: If google can set it up for gmail in Chrome, why don´t they for Picasaweb?

I'm a Mac user and I agree with you that Picasa Desktop Version is such a disaster. I tried to use google command line tool but it does not work with Google Apps (my company login). Only the choice is
Picasa Web Uploader:
The best part is it's free and clean. It's very light. I'm also using "Image Capture" on my Mac to import pictures from my camera. R.I.P Picasa and iPhoto.
