Will the 6P fast charger work with the Pixel? I have a 6P and pre-ordered a Pixel XL and was wondering if it was ok to us the 6P charger for the the Pixel and if it will support fast charging on the Pixel.

As both share the fast charging technology from Qualcomm, I believe that the charger will work on both devices, but always recommend that you only use the original model of each.

Hi, as someone who does USB-C verification and testing, I wanted to give a bit of a proper statement.

• The Pixel uses a USB-PD charger with 5v@3a and 9v@2a profiles.
• It does not use Qualcomm QC3.0 to the best of my knowledge.
• The Nexus 6P uses "basic" non-PD 5v@3a.

However, personally, I would not recommend plugging your Pixel into the 6P charger  It will work, and charge fine, but it will (a) do so at a slightly reduced rate (15w vs 18w), and (b) there is an engineering issue with the 6P charger that makes it iffy. I would not plug my brand new $800 phone into it unless I had no alternative.

I recommend only using the Google OEM 18w USB-PD charger from the Google Store. Benson Leung had a hand in its design, and I feel it is of better quality than the 6P OEM charger.

Thanks for this however, does this mean I should be replacing my USB3 car charger too? I understand the issues with the Nexus 6P stock charger but want to clarify if this affects all other USB-C chargers

Do you mean USB Type-A? Then it depends on the charger. If it has the correct signaling on the D+/D- pins then yes, it will work fine. If it is not designed properly, then no, it will not work.

Can't find the Amazon order for some reason but it is a USB Type C charger that Benson OK'd

Now here I am, asking the other way around: Would it be safe to charge the Nexus 6P with one of the new Google OEM cables and chargers (18w)? As far as I believe, the device should only draw as much power as it needs, but I'm not totally sure about that.

Anh, I suspect yes, you can use the Pixel charger on the Macbook.

The question is if the Apple support 9v input. Can you report back and tell us if it does?

Anh: Pixel on Macbook charger will do 5v/2.4a=12w  over USB-PD "smart" signaling. Pixel on 6P charger will work, but I do not advise it at all.

Oh my word, feel like a toss (face-palm). Yeah I'll rather be safe than sorry.

Nathan, since you are so knowledgeable and helpful, what about a Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port on my computer? Anything to watch out for? Mainly, is it safe?

(Edit:) Actually, there is one caveat. Some Asus ROG gaming laptops have a hardware flaw with their Thunderbolt 3 ports and will only work in 1 orientation. So hopefully you don't have that. :p

Jonathan: I do not know. It depends on the capability of the individual Thunderbolt 3 port.
