| Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Suhayl Suliman | 14/10/15 07:35 | I've just recently updated my Nexus 5 (2013) to Android 6.0 and noticed that after moving the handset away from my ear after a call, the screen does not automatically switch-on to show whether the call has ended or not. Has the update somehow interfered with the proximity sensor or is there a setting that can be adjusted ? |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Mltprog | 14/10/15 08:27 | I have the same problem and It seems that we are not the only ones as there are many others reporting this problem on other forums. Also to add more information, this happens randomly and not on every call, however it happens more often than not. This Problem never occurred before android 6.0. My Device is also a nexus 5. Noticed that this happens when I receive calls and not when i make them. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Kathy Hui | 14/10/15 10:09 | I have a similar problem where the proximity sensor is not as sensitive when I'm trying to use Gravity Screen to turn on my phone by sensor. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Orrin - Community Manager | 14/10/15 16:50 | Hey Everyone, Thanks for letting us know about this issue with the proximity sensor. There have been a few changes over the last few updates, but there aren't any known issues with Marshmallow. Some of you mentioned that it only happens when you are receiving calls. How often does this happen? Do you have to interact with the phone in order for it to light up? Thanks for the info! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | paansingh | 14/10/15 21:25 | Yes the issue is seen on Nexus5 (2013) after 6.0 update and it is very
frequent. (occurs 7 out of 10 times) Even pressing the power button
doesn't light up the screen. The call has to be disconnected only from
the other end to get the control back. I have enabled adaptive
brightness option. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Suhayl Suliman | 14/10/15 23:55 | The handset does not respond after the call has ended. Even when pressing the Power button, the screen remains off. Control is regained only after about 10 seconds or so. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Emanuele Bianchi Janetti | 15/10/15 00:38 | It happens to me too. I have a Nexus 5 (2013) updated to Android 6.0. After moving away the phone from my ear the screen won't turn on, even if I press the power button. I also noticed that if I press a second time the power button the screen turns on and the phone is unlocked. This happens only if the call is long enough; if I move away the phone from my ear after a few seconds the screen turns on correctly. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Mltprog | 15/10/15 08:17 | Hi Orrin, I asked a couple of My friends that own a nexus 5 and all of them report this problem as well. It always happens during long calls. Short calls are often not affected. It becomes a problem when a nexus 5 owner calls another nexus 5 owner because if both screens go black, no one can stop the call. We Are from Europe, if the region makes any difference. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Bigs73 | 15/10/15 08:42 | OK guys, I'm testing this as we speak... Any idea of the amount of time? 5 minutes? 30 minutes? Do any of you have a screen protector that covers the sensor? |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Julio Gutierrez | 15/10/15 08:47 | Hello Orrin, +1 to the problem report. I agree this happens in around 70% of the calls. Nexus 5, no issues at all with this sensor until upgrading to Android 6.0. Phone does not respond to first power button press. Sometimes it responds to second power button press and the call is already finished. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Mltprog | 15/10/15 09:27 | Hi When this problem happens, not even the power button wakes the phone. You have to wait a couple of seconds and re press the power button or wait for the call to end. It is unlikely that is a sensor issue, however the symptoms are similar. I think call length between 5 to 10 min should do it however the screen must be facing something (screen off) for all the duration of the call. I am not sure if calling or receiving a call makes a difference a well. So far to me problem only occurred when receiving calls. Note: Since the problem does not always occur i might be wrong about some details, but so far this is what i experienced. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | paansingh | 15/10/15 10:12 | After disabling adaptive brightness option I don't see the issue. Pls try and confirm if this was causing the problem by interfering with proximity sensor's functioning. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Mario deGabriele | 15/10/15 10:22 | After the last update to android 6.0 on my nexus 5, the proximity sensor is not working properly. For calls over 20 to 30 sec the phone does not display, it remains with the display off. When this happens you have to switch on to be able to hang up. This happens when I receive calls not when I originate them. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Orrin - Community Manager | 15/10/15 10:24 | Thanks everyone for the update, I've alerted the team. I have two troubleshooting steps that might help out. The first is that if you have a screen protector, try removing that. Sometimes these screen protectors interfere with the sensor, and it may cause issues. The same thing applies to your phone case. Double check to make sure your case isn't covering the sensor as well. Since many of you have reported that this only started happening after the update to Marshmallow, the steps above will probably not do anything. I'll keep you updated with more information. Please also try the suggestion posted above and disable adaptive brightness, to see if this fixes the issue. This will help the team troubleshoot as well. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Suhayl Suliman | 15/10/15 10:33 | I can confirm that whether adaptive brightness is on or off, the issue still persists |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Pd Wolfe | 15/10/15 10:44 | I am experiencing the same issue on Nexus 5, Android 6.0. Screen blank when the phone is removed from my head, and control comes back (via power button or just random screen on again) after about 5-10 seconds. Happens on calls of random lengths. I have disabled adaptive brightness and will check that. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | plex alex | 16/10/15 02:01 | I'm experiencing the same issue when using the Gravity Screen app. It uses proximity sensor to wake up the device. Worked fine prior the M update but after it often fails. Reading comments of the app it can be seen it's happening almost with everyone after updating their Nexus 5. My guess the issue is probably related to this bug: https://code.google.com/p/android-developer-preview/issues/detail?id=3230 |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Bigs73 | 16/10/15 04:30 | How long does it take for it to stay unresponsive guys? Is it all around 30 secs to 5 mins? I tested this yesterday twice for about 10 minutes and mine works fine. Lights up everytime I uncover the sensor. I have adaptive ON also. I know some of you said you didn't have a screen protector, but do some of you have any? I have one myself but I have the cut out for the camera and the proximity sensors. Marc |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Mltprog | 16/10/15 07:48 | I Successfully reproduced the proximity sensor behaviour plex alex quoted from https://code.google.com/p/android-developer-preview/issues/detail?id=3230 It seems that the proximity sensor gets stuck on off when device after device is unlocked, not just on calls. It could be related. @Bigs73 regarding call length, the problem is so random it's hard to tell. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | oldgrowler.1 | 16/10/15 08:51 | Glad I'm not the only one who is having this problem after marshmallow update, my phone has done this on most calls I've received when I'm using handset not Bluetooth. On a couple of occasions I kept hitting power button to eventually bring screen up but by that time thankfully the other end of call had already hung up. No screen protector and never had any problems before marshmallow. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | plex alex | 16/10/15 16:44 | Using the Gravity Screen app the issue can be reproduced something like this: - place it on a table face up - wake up the phone by swiping over the sensor, don't unlock it. - swipe a finger over the proximity sensor repeatedly until the screen goes to sleep by itself. Sometimes while doing this I won't be able to wake up the phone again by swiping over the sensor. I think the problem is that the proximity sensor is triggered just after activated... |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Shaurya_Gupta | 16/10/15 22:39 | I am also facing the proximity sensor related problem after upgrading to Android 6.0. While trying to end calls, when I take it off the ear, the screen is blacked out. Even if I press the power button, the screen stays black for few more seconds. It is difficult to cut the call, or even verify if the other end has hanged up, as the screen stays blank and there is no notification sound. After 5-6 secs, the phone screen lights up. This issue is very frustrating. I don't have any screen protector, etc. I bought the phone (Nexus 5 32G) in India (via Playstore) and use it in India. Since other users have reported the same issue from other regions, it can be concluded that the issue is not related to region. Also, this issue did not occur before upgrading to 6.0 Seems to be a software bug in android 6.0 which affects Nexus 5. Hopefully it gets fixed soon in an update. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Nithin V Abraham | 18/10/15 19:53 | Along the same above said problem I'm also experiencing Screen Flickering, that is the screen just goes off for half a second or so and might repeat for two three times. It's not consequent but randomly happens. This does not happen during calls but happens when watching YouTube, browsing in chrome and in some other instances. |

I updated my Nexus 5 to Android 6.0 last week and since then i am having this issue wherein after i am done with my call and take off the phone from my ear, the screen doesn't light up. This happens randomly and about twice a day. There is no fixed pattern. To regain my screen, i need to click on the power button twice. I have always had the screen protector on my phone, but never faced such an issue before. |

Blinking meaning the screen gets turned off for half a second or so and turn on, sometimes it repeats for two three times and then the blinking stops. It's very annoying and scary because I'm having only one month warranty remaining and if it got anything to do with hardware I have to get in touch with the service center. | Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Sk0ly | 21/10/15 11:40 | I am having the exact same issues. It is particularly frustrating when leaving voicemails as I find myself in a frantic panic to get the screen back on to end my call and the voicemail. I have no screen protector, no case and adaptive brightness turned on. The issue is essentially as follows. I accept a call with the phone locked, I answer the call and upon call completion, move the phone away from my face. However, at this point the screen does not turn on until I hit the power button a few times. Nexus 5 Build MRA58K Android Security Patch Level: Oct 1, 2015 |

This is a separate issue to this discussion but to help I had this issue a while back. It is common with Nexus 5's and has to do with a sticking power button. The way android is set is that if you hold your power button for fifteen to thirty seconds, the phone will shut down. If your power button gets stuck from time to time, it will result in it turning off. I ended up opening it up and cleaning it but you can probably hit it with an air can to try and remedy the issue. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Suhayl Suliman | 21/10/15 12:15 | This issue has absolutely nothing to do with a sticky power button as myself and other users pointed out. Extremely annoying since the caller is still on the line and you think call ended and you start talking something negative about the caller. But on the serious note this issue is more frequent when someone is calling you. When you make a call the issue comes up only once or twice every 10 calls. But when receiving the call issue comes up 99% of the time. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muziqaz | 23/10/15 07:14 | No. I don't have any glass protectors. The problem is in the software. Period. | Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muziqaz | 23/10/15 07:18 | Only way to 'fix' this is to press power button twice and screen will come back and then you can end the call. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Mario D. | 24/10/15 17:27 | Also in my nexus 5 same issue. Google? Are you working about this bug and WiFi draining bug???? When a stable release? |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | James Fleetwood | 24/10/15 17:58 | My problem is that when I am talking the screen doesn't shut off when I place it by my ear. Which is really annoying since my ear touches the screen and it does weirs things. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Przemyslaw W. | 24/10/15 18:19 |
Now when you mentioned this, I had few times that I ended connection with my cheek, or slided down task bar (this happen more often), but when this happen I'm pretty sure that screen is off... |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Nikhil Malukani | 24/10/15 21:51 | Same issue |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | jaadoo | 24/10/15 23:09 | OK now other problems have started. Screen doesn't go off at all!!! Plus Screen doesn't wake up for an incoming call!! GR8 looks like I'm gonna go back to 5.1.1 latest. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Mile Dobrota | 25/10/15 11:31 | Same problem here. And its totaly anoying and i cant have calls anymore. I am losing customers and its start to be very big problem to me. Google you act like a beginners. Big companies should have test department. Or this is not accedentaly, maybe this is made it on purpose to buy some other new device because nexus 5 before this worked perfectly. So put that update/fix soon as possible. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Igor Bugaenko | 25/10/15 14:17 | Same problem. Marshmallow, Nexus 5. Had no problems before upgrade. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | iallicock | 25/10/15 14:39 | Same issue as all the others. I noticed this while using the preview. I thought it would be corrected in the final release of Android 6.0. However, same behavior. Pressing the power button does nothing. Have to reboot the phone or the person has to hangup to have the screen returned to normal operation. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Tom K Nexus5 | 25/10/15 17:05 | Same problem here too. No such problems before the upgrade. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | ejarg7 | 26/10/15 01:57 | Same issue as above (Nexus 5). Screen doesn't come back on after an incoming call. Pressing the power button doesn't seem to help. No screen protector, no flip cover. Only noticed this since the Marshmallow update. As far as I can tell, happens all the time. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Ravi Bharathi | 26/10/15 02:09 | Same issue here, it happens every time for me |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Ni V | 26/10/15 02:38 | I had the same problem for a few days after almost a 30min Whatsapp call. My screen went all black after SIM and Whatsapp calls longer than 2 mins. The fix is pretty simple: Go to accessibility in the settings menu and check the "Power button ends call" option. Restart phone. I'm using Nexus 5 with 6.0 |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Boghy B | 26/10/15 02:51 | Go to settings, battery and activate battery saver. When using this, the proximity sensor works ok. Please confirm. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Ravi Bharathi | 26/10/15 02:55 | I do not want to always end the call using power button, think of the case I am having call to automated response system, where I have to respond to IVR, if the screen does not comes up, then I cannot complete the call. Only option will be to disable proximity sensor (this will killer on batteries and your battery will last long) and use the phone |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | jaadoo | 26/10/15 04:13 | I was on a fifteen min call and I kept testing the proximity sensor during the call. It worked fine. I ended that call and still it worked. It turned back on. But here's the thing. I was again on a call but a short one, and this time I didn't cut the call. The person on the other end cut the call. And this time the proximity sensor didn't turn on. So what is happening is there is is a huge lag in the Sensor recognizing the object is near or far. And if the call gets cut soon enough before "You" (user of the Nexus), the sensor is in a loop as to whether to turn on or not and that's why we need to press the power button twice. The first is to tell the call has ended, hence to turn off the display and the next to turn on the display. Well this is again my interpretation. Could be wrong. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Логистика Дооел | 26/10/15 06:46 | I can confirm that this proximity sensor problem is software bug. And it needs to be fixed fast, 'cos i really need to use my phone as a phone. Tried everything to override the problem, nothing helps, i have to press power button twice to get back screen on. However if this is not fixed soon, i will need to go back to 5.x.x. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Brittaney Hamilton | 26/10/15 08:31 | This is happening on my nexus 5x as well. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Ziv Knobler | 26/10/15 12:00 | Can we be sure it's a proximity sensor issue and not lets say the default google dialer ? |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Логистика Дооел | 26/10/15 12:25 | Yes, with battery saver ON, it works, but UI looks like shit, even effects are gone, not to mention red lines below and above. But at least we got somewhere, You can replicate the issue like this: Call the affected phone, phone needs to have locked screen Cover the proximity sensor with hand Cut the call from phone that you are dialed before Now, uncover the sensor that you covered before on affected phone Screen needs to be turn on, but it won't! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | xtaski | 26/10/15 18:57 | Same here. Had the issue on my 5x. I rebooted and it went away, but it seems to come back later. On mine it seems to be triggered by other alerts/notifications that come up during the call. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Astik Unagar | 26/10/15 20:16 | can anyone please help me, when i click power or lock button on my nexus 5 the screen goes blank(black) as if it being a hardware display problem, this particularly started happening after the google marshmallow update. However after trying out switch on and off several times the phone starts working normal and again if i accidentally press a lock button screen goes blank :/ Please suggest, feels annoying |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Ashu15394 | 26/10/15 23:29 | @ Astik it's been every nexus 5 user's problem, just get your power button replaced by nearby mobile repairing shop. In India local repair shop charges ~Rs.300 service centre charges ~Rs.12k |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Ping Shen Tan | 27/10/15 03:26 | I'm having the same problem (2 out of 10 calls) with my Nexus 5 after updating to Marshmallow and I don't use a screen protector. The screen will stay off until I press the power button twice and my phone will end up on the lockscreen. After the problem happens, the proximity sensor will still continue to work for subsequent calls and fail occasionally. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Paolo Lampreda | 27/10/15 09:03 | I have the same problem, after upgrading to 6.0 No cover and no screen protector. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Hugh_effo | 27/10/15 09:11 | had this problem on my Nexus 6 when I upgraded to 5.1, turns out it was my glass Screen protector. Took it off and have no issues since, now running Marshmellow and i love it. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Nick Vincent | 27/10/15 10:15 | Same problem here, Nexus 5 with fresh 6.0 install. Seriously though -- this is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. I work as a QA Analyst, and there's simply ZERO excuse for this getting missed. This is something that should've been caught almost immediately. Google, you have NO excuses for putting out 6.0 in the current shape it's in. This release is riddled with major functionality breaks, and someone needs to be fired for such incompetence. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Farhan Toshi | 27/10/15 10:52 | I' facing the same prob when i updated my android 6 on my nexus 5.The proximity sensor doesnt work during call. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Tired of trying different direction display names | 27/10/15 20:26 | Same problem with Nexus 6. No screen protector. Problem started after upgrade to marshmallow. Did not exist before that. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Nikolas Skyttér | 28/10/15 02:16 | Well.. some basic testing before rolling out the update and this issue would have been discovered. Same happens on both mine and my wifes Nexus 5. So you have obviously change something regarding the proximity sensor, check the code between 5 and 6 and you might discover whats broken. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Antonio De Simone | 28/10/15 03:00 | Hi, I have the same problem. |
| Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Michal Podsedník | 28/10/15 03:17 | Go to settings, accessibility, check "power button to end call", and reboot your phone. Fixed the problem for me for now. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Len the Lock | 28/10/15 08:00 | Yes also have this problem; UK Vodafone and only since upgrade to v6 |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Derrick Koppes | 28/10/15 08:03 | Having the same issue, Nexus 5 will not wake after making/receiving calls. Problem started after installing Marshmallow 6.0. Occasionally pressing the power button twice will wake the phone, other times just have to wait about 20-30 seconds. No screen protector or case. Also when in "Battery Saver" mode, screen will not wake right away by pushing the power button. Seems to get hung up for 30 seconds or so. A few times phone would not wake at all and had to reboot. not sure if that is related or not. |
| Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | tntuof | 28/10/15 08:30 | I have the same issue! Please post troubleshooting steps? I don't have any screen protector and the issue seems to appear most times but not always (not depending on call duration afaik), so it's at least semi-random. This is a real priority since it affects the most basic usage! Call ending is almost impossible, Please fix it ASAP! Have factory reset to no difference and it was working reliably before Marshmallow |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Логистика Дооел | 28/10/15 08:42 | There is NO solution for this problem. Solution is update of the system that Googleneeds to release, and has to do it FAST !. The phone is not functioning like a phone, and there is no temp solution for this. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Champak Jain | 28/10/15 21:18 | Same issue with my Nexus 5 as well, waiting for the fix to be released but Android team don't seem to be any hurry to release it |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Tudor Turcu | 29/10/15 06:12 | I have the same problem - after the upgrade to Android 6 on a Nexus 5, the screen remains black after a call, when I take the phone of from the ear. I have to press the power button at least twice in order to see the screen and to find out if the call is completed or not.. :( |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Alexandru Dragoiu | 29/10/15 07:21 | I subscribe, Google, please fix, I have tested the sensor and seems to be OK, so it must be an OS issue. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Ph Ownmail | 30/10/15 02:40 | Same issue with screen locking during call. Nexus 5 , no screen protector. this issue is only present since update to Android 6 installed. never had any problems before. time for first patch. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Sergey Mishansky | 30/10/15 04:42 | Same issue on my Nexus 5 after update to Android 6. One note: if I press twice on power button after call has ended - screen switch on. It's really seriously problem |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Alexandru Dragoiu | 30/10/15 05:28 | Yes, I think the screen status is considered ON when actually it is still OFF. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Francis Desjardins | 30/10/15 06:11 | Same thing here with a Nexus 5X freshly out of the box |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Cosmin C. | 30/10/15 06:36 | Same problem on Nexus 5 after updating to 6.0 :( The screen stays black after a call ends, and if I press the power button twice it lights up. Pressing the power button once turns it off (I can hear the sound notification), pressing it a second time turns it on. This never happened on any previous builds (< 6.0). |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | FTY | 31/10/15 03:46 | Have the same issue here, after what seems to be every call I receive the screen just stays black, power button doesn't bring back the screen either for about 5 seconds, like many have posted. Nexus 5 2013. Because I don't know if the person has hung up or not, and I don't have to tell you that this is partly a security issue if you're dealing with sensitive data and don't want other to hear you talk about - and since you can't drop the call yourself because the screen wont turn on, it's well annoying to say the least. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | kvols | 31/10/15 07:30 | Same problem here on Nexus 5 after installing Android 6. Not using screen protector, and screen is "flawless". I've tested the proximity sensor and it is working fine. No similar problem observed before Android 6.0 |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Anthony McNamee | 31/10/15 11:36 | Same issue here straight after update. Tried removing the screen protector and that didnt work. Pressing the power button twice seems to make the screen come backbut its VERY annoying. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Bombsb | 31/10/15 13:57 | Same problem here, Nexus 5, no screen protector, zero customizations Thanks for the bug google, again =/ |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Wasim AK | 31/10/15 22:44 | I've just updated my Nexus 5 to Android 6.0 and noticed that after moving the handset away from my ear after a call, the screen does not automatically switch-on to show whether the call has ended or not. It happens randomly and for most of the calls. Even pressing the power button doesn't light up the screen. The call has to be disconnected only from the other end to get the control back. What is the solution? |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | AkHiL Buddha | 01/11/15 17:20 | i am getting a small red dotted light on top right on my NEXUS 5 and screen was not getting Dark after taking the calls , i am facing this issue from last 2 weeks and also adaptive brightness was also not working |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Dan Redman | 01/11/15 17:21 | On going issue for me on every call also. I downloaded an app that shows proximity sensor value and it is at 0 permanently (ie-full scale, something in close proximity permanently). Previously I was needing to reboot my phone to cancel calls where it went to voicemail. I have since seen a comment here suggesting to turn on the "power button ends call" option in accessability options and this should make life a bit easier until google can fix this with an update. BRAND new screen and no protector. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Kelly Driscoll | 01/11/15 18:21 | Same problem with proximity sensor on Nexus 5 after marshmallow update. Any updates or ETA on a fix? |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | FaTonyNZ | 01/11/15 23:07 | Yup, same problem on NZ model Nexus 5. Worked just fine on Lollipop with the same screen protector. It's not the screen protector. Unless some marshmallow leaked out onto the sensor and solidified all clear and solid so I can't see it's sugary (not so much right now) goodness. Pretty disappointing miss for Google given so many people are experiencing this issue. Only saving grace here is Google now roll out fixes much more frequently... |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | EmpressRose | 02/11/15 06:11 | My issue with your suggestion is this. If this issue didn't happen BEFORE the 6.0 update and we had out screen protectors on then and our cases, why on earth should we have to remove them now? I don't have a screen protector in and I do NOT have adaptive brightness on. And yet ever since 6.0 I've got this issue as well. It's infuriating. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | EmpressRose | 02/11/15 06:13 | Is there a way we can undo the most recent update?

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | agreenhut | 03/11/15 07:12 | I have the same issue. Nexus 5. Just updated to Android 6.0. At the end of a call when I take the phone away from my ear to hang up, the screen is blank. I have to press the power button 2 times and unlock my phone before regaining access to end the call. Usually the other people has hung up, and I have to search my call record to make sure the call has ended. This is annoying me. I would like this fixed or tell me how to adjust my settings. Thanks. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Hott K | 03/11/15 09:37 | Same problem. Nexus 6, Android 6.0, Marshmallow - brand new phone out of the box. - I turned off adaptive brightness - with phone on desk (I am not holding it), I dial a number and the screen goes black - with phone on desk (I am not holding it), I answer an incoming call and the screen goes black - I cannot unlock the screen no matter what I do (including multiple power button pushes) - the call can only be ended from the other side - which sucks period, but sucks even more if no one answers and your call goes to voicemail. Bought phone to be part of Project Fi ('cause you have to buy a Nexus phone). After spending hundreds of dollars to buy the phone upfront .... IT DOESN'T WORK AS A PHONE. AM NOT IMPRESSED. Fix this now, or at least let us know when you anticipate patching this issue. It is not a stuck power button or a screen protector or a case. There are too many people (me included) without these things on their phone that CAN'T USE THEIR PHONE. Some communication on the status of this issue might help to alleviate frustration. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | albinobean | 03/11/15 13:54 | Same issue here using Nexus 6P. I also tried the Hangouts Dialer with the same result. The phone doesn't respond to power or volume buttons either. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Corey Staheli | 03/11/15 22:32 | same issue. I would like a fix. Adaptive brightness does not work at all. screen always stays dim and proximity sensor does not work. does not dim screen when placed to face on either side. I'm switching to a different phone until this is fixed...heck...I may even sell my Nexus 5 because man this is disappointing with a brand new OS update... |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Matteo Cassina | 04/11/15 02:37 | Same Issue on my nexus5. i see also that is not working properly hearing a voice message from whatssapp. if i open a voice message with my phone far from me is using the ear mike (like if i have my phone on my ear) and not recognize i do not have my phone in that position. screen become black. it's very annoying also for the phone calls. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Rappetor | 05/11/15 02:50 | Same issue here.. During phonecalls (or usually, after a phonecall when you want to hang up or just go and continue working on the phone). Also have the issue with whatsapp phonecalls. The other day I received a 'pants call', so the other person did not know he was calling me. I had no option to hang up (screen wouldn't wake up) and had to reboot the phone, Not the best experience.. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Sébastien B. | 06/11/15 02:00 | Ok finally bug is over for me.... Guess what: I removed my tempered glass protection and voilà... Weird as with my portection, the screen would go off when i took a call, but wouldnt screenon right after. As if the prox sensor was a bit more sensitive after a ear-on move.... |

It remains black or off after call termination too and then comes back to life sometime after the call is terminated. |

| Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Andriana R | 07/11/15 06:18 | Had the same problem even after the latest update. I have a tempered glass screen protector that covers the sensor. I also have auto brightness on. But after searching Internet on a same issue fix, I went to settings- accessibility and checked: power button ends call. Did a restart and tested by covering with my finger the sensor during a phone call. Guess what! It is working flawlessly and without removing protector. I didn't have the problem on 5.1.1 really. I think maybe it is an android 6 bug. |

It started when marshmallow was installed and has continued intermittently, but frequently, since. MRA58N definitely had problems on my phone. No screen protectors/cases/etc. I've just turned off the adaptive brightness today and have had several calls where it hasn't happened - so that's a good sign. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | matt w109 | 10/11/15 23:07 | Have issue as well, nexus5-android 6.0-no case/screen protector, as soon as I make a call, my screen goes black, doesn't come back up until call is ended. Power button /sometimes/ will flash the display for a split second, but too fast to press a button. Makes the phone unusable as a phone when you need to use the keypad, like when paying a bill. I've had the nexus 5 since release, ironically paying my cell phone bill the day it was due trying to pay it by midnight, couldnt get the screen to come on so I could press the correct menu options dropped it fumbling with the POS. Of course broken fucking screen. Ive been a nexus fanboy since the nexus one. Between my nexus 9 issues and now this I'm growing tired of these problems. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Oral Allen | 10/11/15 23:55 | +1 I also own a Nexus 5 running Android 6.0 Build Number: MRA58N with this proximity problem. I would have to hit the power button several times then it'll lag then go to my lock Screen. As everyone noted short calls appears to not be affected however longer calls the device appears to go into a deep sleep which appears to cause the problem with the proximity sensor. |

To get the beta you have to enroll to it here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree And after you can download it through the Play app. It has other features you may do not need, but make sure the Turn screen on by proximity feature is ticked. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | De Zeeuw | 11/11/15 07:41 | Just to add to the pile of feedback on this issue: I also have call / proximity issues with the new 6.0 update. As said above, after the call and putting the phone away from my ear the screen will not turn on. Pressing the power button does not do anything. Only when the caller at the other end ends the conversation, the Nexus 5 screen turns on again. Very annoying not to be able to hang up a call. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | kahf | 11/11/15 08:59 | Same problem with my Nexus 5 until yesterday. I took the advice of some others and turned on the option for the power button to end calls. Not too long after, I received a call and was shocked at the end to see the screen come back on as it should. I went in and unchecked the power button ends calls and then made several test calls to my phone - the screen worked every time. Since then I received the MRA58N update and the screen is still working after updating. I found some older posts from last year where this same thing happened after the 5.1 update on the Nexus 6. Some thought turning on the power button ends call option managed to reset the proximity sensor. Seems to have worked for me so give it a try. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | David Skurnik | 12/11/15 10:42 | I have the same problem after upgrading my Nexus 5 to M6. I am pretty sure never happened before the M upgrade. The display remains off when the phone is moved away from my ear after a call. I have a feeling that this is a software bug. The sensor hub processor is probably using the wrong threshold value to compare the prox chip reading to. There is usually a "make" threshold to turn the display off, and a "release" threshold to turn the display back on. The "release" threshold is typically lower than the "make" threshold. This hysteresis prevents the display from flickering on and off as the phone gradually approaches your ear in a call. I bet the software has got its pointers mixed up, and is using the wrong threshold. In fact, it seems as if the "release" threshold has be set much too low, probably zero, as if it has been cleared. Zero will never happen, even at infinite distance, because of internal reflection from the phone's cover glass. Time for a software upgrade! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | plex alex | 12/11/15 15:40 | According to my tests the issue happens if the proximity sensor is activated (eg: answering a call) and right after it's covered. If after activation for some seconds it's in FAR (not close to the ear) state and after NEAR, the sensor will work normally later on and not stuck in the NEAR state. Can someone confirm it? |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | kahf | 15/11/15 09:42 | Mine was "fixed" by enabling the power button ends call option and remained working when it was disabled. However, it only seems to work with short calls. I seldom have calls that last more than a few minutes but after a 20 minute conversation the screen remained black. I repeated the power button procedure and the screen is working once again. This is just so random and annoying! There must be a solution or work around. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | CeFreire | 16/11/15 08:13 | Hello, everyone, I am having the same problem with the proximity sensor when trying to end a call. But also, which is even more irritating, I seem to have a problem with the power button. Whenever I push it just once for turning the screen off, the "Power off" message appears, and my phone turns off by itself. Sometimes it gets worse, and I can't even turn on the phone for a few hours, since whenever I try it, it can't go beyond the color balls and the screen goes black again. I downloaded the Gravity app, so that I wouldn't need to push the power button for locking the screen, but since I'm also having the problem with the proximity sensor, the Gravity app doesn't work as expected, and sometimes I'm forced to push the power button...and the phone turns off by itself...and the cycle repeats. REALLY IRRITATING! Please fix this, Google. Because, if I'm unfortunately lead to the conclusion that this won't be fixed and that I need a new phone, then it certainly won't be a Google phone again, after having such an annoying experience... |

I have the same issue, it is because the button is wasted, it is old, you may get a replace or google it to find partial solutions for it. I found a video but I don't remember the url, what I can do to help is give you this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OQWZakFjNU to alternative ways to lock/unlock your phone. Regards |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Eyal Lotem | 16/11/15 11:08 | You have a different problem, very common in the Nexus 5, of a stuck power button. Your power button gets stuck inside when you press it. I had the same problem -- there's no good solution but I just toyed with the button a lot and after a while the problem disappeared. If it happens, you have to quickly press the button a few times to "un-stuck" it before the phone reboots due to a long-press. |

Even with a screen protector which still covers a slight amount of the proximity sensor, my screen off issue has gone completely 😊 |

| Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | flyingsolo | 17/11/15 19:29 | I have the same problem of the screen not lighting up when you finish a call and remove the device from your face. I don't have a screen protector so the proximity sensor should not be blocked. It seems the proximity sensor is no longer functioning properly since Marshmallow update. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Jonathan Clapsaddle | 18/11/15 05:14 | Yep, happening on my Nexus 5 (2013) as well, more recently than original upgrade to Marshmallow - past few weeks. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | redsted | 19/11/15 00:36 | I have the issue on my Nexus 5. I was trying to troubleshoot with my carrier the other day and after 10min on hold they asked me to try sending an sms but the screen was off and my only option was to end the call! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | george koukovinis | 19/11/15 01:41 | i have the same problem .... 2 phones without screnn protector... i read carefully all the forum and all the possible answers about some workaround of this specific issue. i can verify that this problem only occur when i receive a call ... when i make a call its always 100% the screen comes back to press (red) hung up. So..... what i did .. Sound & notification --> app notifications -- > stock dialler ( phone app ) disable allow peeking .... which is the only diference between making / receiving a call ... its the 3rd day now and screen works perfect ... |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | flyingsolo | 19/11/15 07:11 | I can confirm this solution has fixed it for me. Thanks! Hopefully, this can guide Google to a fuller solution. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Róbert Kovácsics | 19/11/15 07:56 | Same problem here. Screen does not turn on when i move away from my ear. I have to push the power button 2-3 times to turn the screen on.On lollipop i had no such problem, it started after 6.0 marshmallow update (OTA). |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | VQT | 19/11/15 08:18 | @george koukovinis thanks for the tip. Unfortunately using your suggestion didn't work for me on my N6P with 6.0. As suggested: settings Sound & Notification > Apps Notification >Phone > Allow Peeking to OFF. Bug still there! Having said, I noticed that plugging my headphones in during the in-call black screen will bring up the screen again! So this bug has 2 reliefs (power button & head phone) but no cure at the moment. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Takis Diakoumis | 19/11/15 18:45 | i have a nexus 5 running 6.0 this is really a massive issue!! making calls is difficult, receiving calls is difficult, using the speaker during a call is impossible, using the keypad for (say) numeric selections during a call is impossible. the phone, as a phone is practically unusable. an awful awful experience. i've tried a huge number of suggestions including those on here to attempt to resolve this to no avail. this is surely a rather critical bug. please fix !! |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | ricsto | 20/11/15 01:52 | The previously mentioned fix. removed peek from phone app did not fix it for me. Frequently I have to look up information on my phone when in a call. This issue is so bad that I'm close to having to get another phone. The bigger issue is close to nothing from Google on this issue, no workaround, nothing. I'm beginning to suspect whether that part of the nexus program is little more than beta testing for Android with lots of volunteers happy to pay for the privilege. Issues like this should never get through testing. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | DaNamiel | 20/11/15 17:59 | I had this issue with my N5, not very often ,may be half half. But when I get my 6P recently, the situation became even worse that whenever I dial a number, the screen immediately turns black and never turns on until I ask the other side finish the call and press the power button several times or even need a very long press to wake it up. That's UNACCEPTABLE! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | DaNamiel | 20/11/15 19:42 | A quick update and a fix for my situation.....removed the TGSP solved the "dial-and-turn-black-immediately" issue. But not sure if the "half-half" situation that I encountered in N5 still persist. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | VQT | 20/11/15 19:55 | Half the people will say that the N6P without a protector or a protector with a proximity sensor cutout will work. Other half, the condition is in-call black screen doesn't matter protected or uncovered. Very frustrating that Google doesn't acknowledge this issue. |

This happened also after I carried out a Factory reset ... This does not happen every call , I have experienced it +/- 5 times in the month that I have had Android 6 , however yesterday it happened twice in a row . I have been unsuccessful in replicating the bug , I have check the sensor and it works just fine ...I just recall I made a call , an automated exchange answered where I had to use the dial pad to navigate to the person I needed to talk to, when I removed the cell from my ear to use the dial pad the screen did not light up I had to hit the power button to light it . This did not happen before the Upgrade to Android 6 ... |

The screen doesn't turn on even for notifications, unless i've performed this action. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | fdsfsdt | 24/11/15 13:44 | I'm also seeing this problem on our two Nexus 5. One has a screen protector and the other one doesn't. My wife and I started seeing this issue immediately after the Android 6 update and it happens 90% of the time. During incoming or outgoing calls. Very annoying, if I need to use the touchpad to dial numbers, I need to press power twice (I assume the first time to "turn it off" - although it is already off, the system thinks it is on and another time turn it on). Hopefully someone at Google is working on this and a fix will come out soon! |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Alan Philp | 25/11/15 03:16 | Reading through this thread it’s quite clear the problem starts after the upgrade to Marshmallow. My proximity sensor and calls were working perfectly for 18 months prior to the upgrade with no change in apps or covers/protectors. The most frustrating thing about this issue is Google’s lack of acknowledgment. Every manufacturer has glitches from time to time, but to provide no feedback on a fix for nearly two months is a disgrace. Especially as customers are spending time removing protectors and purchasing alternatives. It’s ironic that I had given Marshmallow a try because I was considering the Nexus 5X and I thought I would give it a test run first… let me emphasize “was”. Is anyone even still looking at this issue? |

Seems to be one of the most reported issues with Marshmallow yet it’s classed as “Priority-Small”. I wonder if anyone is still working on this low priority issue where you can’t use any functions on your phone after taking a call. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | GregAndo | 01/12/15 18:06 | I offer some information that may work around / fix / resolve the problems here. I don't use a screen protector, but I assume this will help those who do as well: Work Around 2: Make sure the proximity sensor area on the front face (screen area) is super super super clean. Screen protectors may never be clean enough for this to work for them, but if you don't use a screen protector and still experience the issue, if you can wipe away all the natural oils from your skin that are over the top of the proximity sensor, the screen should come back on (it may flicker a bit if it isn't perfectly clean). On the Nexus 6 2014 this is the top of the phone to the left of the speaker area. Once the screen is on, hitting the home key to move away from the dialer application returns the phone to a permanent state of the screen being on (if memory serves anyway) returning to the dialer may bring the issue back. It seems to me that the proximity sensor in 6.0 is working correctly when the phone first starts, but after a certain amount of time becomes over the top super sensitive to even a spec of dust, skin oils or possibly any kind of screen protector. Rebooting the phone resolves this for me, but unfortunately you only find out during a call, and quite possibly it will be back before you receive your next one anyway. Work Around 3: To kill the call (for example if you have reached someone's voice mail service which won't hang up) hold the power button until the phone turns off if all else fails. Noticed this started happening to me during Android M Developer preview. Super frustrating this one. I personally feel Google needs to stop with the enhancements, and get basic functionality right. At this point, I am having difficulty using my phone as a phone - a pretty fundamental shortcoming. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | dingster | 02/12/15 07:59 | My nexus 5, have the same problem. After placing a call the screen won't come on again. Pressing the power button doesn't even reboot the phone,so there is no way of disconnecting the call!! The phone comes responsive again after the receiver hangs up the phone. Imagine you call a number that goes on voice mail... It's not possible to end this call! This is unacceptable behavior from a mobile phone! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Neal Palmer | 02/12/15 13:44 | A solution. Use a bluetooth headset. When you turn on the bluetooth headset, the proximity sensor stops being used, and you can get access to your screen again! |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Diablodestroyer | 07/12/15 17:47 | Why not just allow us to disable the sensor so that this problem can be contained for now. I would rather my phone screen remain on then to have it be off and unusable during the call. |

Campbell | 08/12/15 09:24 | I want to first of all say thanks to Google for listening to us and fixing the problem. As of this moment I am using 6.0.1 and so far I am pretty sure that the problem has been resolved as I have been using it for the last 7 hours. I have been able to end the call using the screen as opposed to the power button as the proximity sensor now detects when I remove the phone from my ear. I say pretty sure as once or twice out of habit I have used the power button to end the call without checking the screen. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Jonathan R. Campbell | 09/12/15 17:23 | Has anyone with problem considered wiping their cache partition? What I did to update my Nexus 5 requires knowledge of how to unlock the bootloader and manually flash the images from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=de#hammerhead, The way I installed 6.0.1 on my Nexus 5 may be why I don't get the problem anymore. I unlocked my bootloader so that I can flash the images as they become available. I am also using a custom recovery, custom kernel and rooted, everything else is stock. I erased the kernel partition and formatted the system and cache partitions. I then flashed the radio, rebooted to the bootloader, flashed the system image and kernel. Then I booted into the Android 6.0.1 OS (still with my data files from the 6.0.0 and apps). I then made my modifications after that for the custom recovery, kernel and root access for certain apps I use for work. I haven't had a problem with the proximity sensor on calls since the update. Everytime I go to end a call via the screen or the power button (accessibility option), I can see the caller or even in the middle of a call I check an app while on a call which I need to do at least a couple of times a week. Try wiping the cache partition first before attempting what I did as it is safer and, faster then the way I did it. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | plex alex | 12/12/15 20:46 | According to my tests, it's fixed in 6.01. Or at least Google worked on the issue little bit. | Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Chris Wargo | 14/12/15 02:15 | i have a softbank nexus 6p, and i am also seeing a black screen while receiving a call, as well as the screen automatically going black if i attempt to make a call. while receiving a call, the screen will eventually come back after the caller hangs up, however, i am unable to answer do to the screen being black. while trying to make a call, i can select a contact, and make the call, but as soon as the phone starts to ring, the screen will go black, and the only way to get it back is to hold the power button for a few seconds to reboot the phone. this started happening after the 6.0.1 update was pushed to my phone. anyone know if a fix for this is coming? |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Sam Martin III | 14/12/15 19:07 | My story is much the same...although, I have 2 other family members with the same model of phone Nexus 5 LG - We where all on 5.1.1 with no problems. - I performed the OTA upgrade to 6.0 first and liked the interface, played around with it, showed the rest of the family and they upgraded as well. - Next day, my daughter came to me with the screen blackout problem, I noticed it was happening to the other two as well (my wife and I don't get that many calls). - None of the phone have screen protectors or cases that cover the sensor. - Downgraded my phone back to 5.1.1 and still had the problem. Oh great, now it is worthless. Tried the downgrade on the remaining 2 phones and the same thing (i.e., make/receive a call and the screen goes black). - Changing the setting for the power button to end a call. It ends the call but the problem persists. - Use a bluetooth device or mic'd headphones and it no black screen. - Flashed the 6.0.1 image using toolkit from a laptop and all phones still have the problem. - My wife said F'this and bought a Samsung G5s, daughter decided to try Google once more with a new Nexus 6 (she wanted a bigger screen anyway) and doesn't have the problem. I, on the other hand, don't have the spare coin to dump 3 expensive phones and am hoping this will get resolved. When the opportunity presents itself, I may go back to a Samsung and ditch Google branded devices all together. This really sucks. Over $1,500 of hardware and hard earned cash, and I am subjected to a software problem that can't seem |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Chris Wargo | 14/12/15 23:38 | update. i turned off batt optimization for the phone functions, as well as removed my tempered glass screen protector. i think the thick glass shield may have been interferring with the prox. sensor function. phone has not done it since. it may be worth looking at any screen protectors you have, and maybe replace them with a cutout where the prox. sensor is. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Court Bouchard | 15/12/15 13:52 | I am having the same problem as everyone else on this. My phone goes black on phone calls and I have to hit the side button multiple times to get it on. Also when connected to Bluetooth in my car, when I make a phone call it sounds like the phone starts to make a call then hangs up...after about 20 seconds it reconnects and the person on the line thinks that I am not there because they wait so long for a response. I would rather not install a 3rd part app to fix the proximity sensor issue. is there going to be a fix in the next update? |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | flyingsolo | 15/12/15 17:54 | Agreed, it seems 6.0.1 has fixed it for some but not all which seems weird. I'd like to see a poll of those with the blank screen problem to see 1. How many have had it fixed with the update and 2. Which device they have. (A Google Form would seem ideal but I don't know how to embed one in this thread!) For me, Nexus 5, it does seem to be solved since the 6.0.1 update. |

Thied party apps I tried do not do the job. |

Apart from being unable to cut calls, I am also not able to type in number responses to IVR Systems. Screen Guard/Adaptive brightness disabling hasn't worked. Purely by chance I found out that one dialing application Viber works perfectly and does not turn the screen of. There is a option in Setting/ Calls and Messages that is not marked and I guess it makes all the difference. That is why it is clear that it can be done, Thanks Google :( |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 20/12/15 16:44 | MMB29K (6.0.1) Nexus 6 here. Still an issue. A reboot fixes it for a number of days, thus I suspect why some people are saying that 6.0.1 fixes it for them. It's not fixed and I suspect everyone who says it had fixed it for them just hasn't waited long enough. |

Also whenever i receive any call , the phone's display go all black and it does not come alive even if i move phone away from my ear. it turns alive only when the call ends. this is really very very disappointing for such a high end flagship phone. Please suggest what to do. I will be highly thankful. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | VQT | 21/12/15 06:37 | For people who have N6P and screen protectors, you need to get a protector with a proximty sensor cutout. I used to complain about this issue also and thought it was Marshmallow related but then a simple switchout of an appropriate sensor cutout has solved my problem. So instead of being a crying baby about it, try the cutout solution. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Kadaan | 21/12/15 09:49 | The screen protector I purchased has the cutout, but still goes black during calls: http://www.amazon.com/Protector-Tempered-Lifetime-Replacement-Warranty/dp/B0168XT3E6/ |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | jberbrec | 21/12/15 10:28 | If you had taken the time to actually read some of the replies, you would have noticed that many people here aren't using screen protectors at all and still experience the issue. But it's always easier to just call everyone crybabies, I guess. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | VQT | 21/12/15 10:31 | Nah, it's just easier to solve my own problems than have it keep going on and on. But I guess, I don't have a problem anymore. Keep crying. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 21/12/15 16:17 | VQT: The fact the issue is resolved by rebooting shows it's not a screen protector issue. I do agree though, it doesn't appear to be affecting most people. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Sagarmodi | 23/12/15 01:29 | I shamefully admit that my problem has been solved by getting rid of my temperred glass. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 23/12/15 01:52 | It seems there are two issues at play here: 1) People who have screen protectors or glass crap on their phone covering their screen protectors. 2) People being hit by the bug that causes the proximity sensor to fail during calls, fixed by a reboot. I have issue 2 and, even when it's a problem and not working properly for me during a call, it will work properly when using an app that tests the proximity sensor. So it's some sort of bug that occurs when the phone is making a call. This can be a standard Voice call, or a Viber call too I have noticed it causes the problem. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 24/12/15 17:51 | So, I have been doing some more testing. I *think* this issue might be due to a dirty proximity sensor. I just encountered the issue again and really testingcleaned the area around the proximity sensor with my T-Shirt. Heyo, the problem went away. So I think maybe that's all it is. More testing is required, and I'm still not sure why a reboot would fix the issue (which it has been for me before) but try this. If you have a screen protector on though, posting here about the issue without pulling the screen protector off is fair game to be being mocked as a total Muppet. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 04/01/16 19:18 | Getting pretty sick of people who haven't read the thread saying it's a screen protector problem. Yes, it appears that some people are having the issue who have a screen protector, but a lot of people who don't encounter the issue too. I have the issue and rebooting my phone will fix it for a while. Then it'll come back. I've also realised a few more things:
I wonder, people who are also experiencing this issue and DO NOT have a screen protector: Do you wear glasses? I do, I wonder if they're upsetting it somehow. I will also virtually slap the next muppet who says "It's a screen protector issue" |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Timothy Wu | 04/01/16 19:30 | Basically what muppet said I ripped my protector off once I came across this thread, but nada. I've done #1/#2 and restarted the phone as well, nothing. I took off my glasses and dialed lol, nope Still a black screen whenever the sensor is called |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 04/01/16 19:35 | @Timothy Wu: Have you tried sensors from the play store? It's free, no ads. What does it's proximity sensor say? It sounds like if rebooting doesn't fix it at all, maybe your proximity sensor has failed totally and always reports 0.000cm At the moment (calls are working correctly) I am seeing my phone report 5.000cm when nothing is near the prox, and 0.000cm when my finger/face is near it. This is how it should be. I am waiting until it fails me again and then I'll re-test with the sensor app. But I'd be curious to know if you're always getting the issue, what does this app report for you? Also, what phone model? I am reporting the issue on a Nexus 6. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Takis Diakoumis | 04/01/16 20:00 | ok... again, and like some others here, i do not have and have never had a screen protector. i installed the sensors app suggested and yes it reports 0.000cm for proximity - so i guess that confirms some it (??). rebooting does not resolve the issue, and reiterating again, this has been since 6.0 only on my nexus 5. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Timothy Wu | 04/01/16 20:33 | @mupps Got the app, always showing 0.000cm, so I guess my sensor is shot? That's a shame lol It basically goes black for anything call-related and on my Nexus 5 I can't say for sure if 6.0.1 is the culprit but I know for a fact that it was working fine right after 6.0.0 because I didn't use the call function for quite some time until after I upped it to 6.0.1 |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 04/01/16 22:02 | For those testing with the sensors app: Make sure you put your finger over/near the proximity sensor while testing. It defaults to showing 0.000 and will only show 5.000 after you move something close to it then away again. Which is dumb, but that's how it works. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Timothy Wu | 04/01/16 22:09 | Yea, 0.000cm regardless, so this can't be a software problem at all? |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 05/01/16 13:59 | @Timothy Wu: It does sound like something is wrong with your sensor, so it always thinks that something is in front of it. Even after rebooting and testing straight away, do you still get 0.000cm? If you press the (i) button in the sensors app what does it say? Also: What type of phone do you have? But yes... it sounds like a hardware fault for you :-( |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 05/01/16 15:31 | So... (This is relelvant to the Nexus 6 only) I have just got the OTA (sideloadeD) from MMB29K to MMB29S The one thing I have noticed is that now the sensors app when it looks at the proximity sensor will default to 5.000 instead of previously it was 0.000 This might be due to changes in the system image, or it could be totally unrelated and just because I rebooted. Let's all fingers crossed that MMB29S contains a fix for this issue, here's hoping! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Timothy Wu | 05/01/16 15:35 | Yea, restarted and still 0.000cm:( I have a Nexus 5 and hitting the (i) doesn't really tell me much (Maximum Range is 5.0 and Resolution is 0.0) Do I have to root my phone to be able to revert to my last version? |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Will Stecho | 06/01/16 20:16 | I'm also having this problem since the marshmallow update. It is affecting both the proximity and light sensors which seem to shut off. I have a sensor monitoring app installed and it reports no data input from the light and proximity sensors. A reboot restores the sensor function but it is temporary and, within an hour or so, they are no longer working again. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Ashish Jain TM | 06/01/16 21:15 | Experiencing the same issue, as soon as i take the phone off my ear, the screen fails to wake up and I cannot disconnect the call by any means. Even pressing the power button fails to turn on the screen. The screen finally wakes up when the call disconnects. The screen goes to sleep as long as the call continues. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Timothy Wu | 06/01/16 21:41 | If you want to end the call with the power button, you gotta turn it on in Accessibility and Power button ends call. It's a decent temporary fix if you don't need the buttons during a call:P |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Róbert Kovácsics | 06/01/16 23:32 | The latest update (6.0.1) fixed for me this proximity issue. I didnt do anyhing special, i dont have screen protector etc. I just updated the software and it fixed. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Lt_Smash | 07/01/16 08:30 | I have the same issue on a Nexus 6 - it has the most recent software updates. I am on Project Fi. My phone screen immediately turns off once I place a call and it will not turn back on until the call has ended. This problem did not exist until I installed a tempered glass screen protector. However, I have installed similar screen protectors on all my prior phones and never have this issue. The only way around this problem I have found is to install Smart Screen On / Off. I read online that some people have simply resorted to chopping off the part of the screen protector covering the proximity sensor. I have not tried this option but the Smart Screen On / Off does work - it allows you to turn off the sensor, which fixes the problem, but then your screen will stay on unless you turn it off manually. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | zen mastah | 12/01/16 08:19 | Same issue here, running 6.0.1 with no screen protectors or anything. Tried two different apps for analyzing proximity sensor and testing out shows that the sensor simply does not work. It sure worked when i got this Nexus 5X so pls google, fix it. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | sextonireland | 12/01/16 12:00 | Same. This issue is definitely married to the software update. My Nexus5 was perfect until that point. It goes black before I move phone up to ear (the moment I dial). Thanks for suggesting 'power button end call' workaround. Is some help but not ideal (automated switchboards ask me to press 1 for Customer Service, 0 for operator which a black screen makes impossible.) |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Lt_Smash | 12/01/16 14:55 | I replaced my screen protector with one that has a cutout for the proximity sensor and now everything is fine. Based on what everyone else is writing, I consider myself lucky *knocks on wood*. However, there's no excuse for the proximity sensor malfunctioning this way, screen protector or otherwise. |
| Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Matus Kopernicky | 12/01/16 15:27 | So for me the update to 6.0.1 fixed the issue on my nexus5. |

| Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Diablodestroyer | 17/01/16 06:52 | Hi all. Had the same problem with my nexus 6p and made a complaint here but yea it is confirmed for all those using tempered glass protector that the proximity sensor is blocked by the glass. So you have to get tempered glass with the cut out for the sensors. Sure Google could try to disable it software side but I think let's be realistic and realise that buying a new protector may solve your problems faster then waiting for Google |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Will Stecho | 17/01/16 11:24 | Screen protectors can interfere with the proximity sensor but there is definitely a bug with the software. I have never had a screen protector on my phone and many, if not most, of the posters state the same. I have even gone so far as to completely replace the screen and proximity sensor and I am still having the same problem. If you are having this issue and you have a screen protector, remove it and make sure the proximity sensor area is clean. If that corrects the problem you are lucky. Otherwise, you are one of the people suffering from this bug in the Android software which Google does not seem to be addressing. My phone has become nearly unusable for phone calls since the Marshmallow update as I keep accidentally hitting buttons with my face when trying to speak. I'm not a fan of Apple products, but I've never had an issue like this with an iPhone. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Chuck08 | 18/01/16 00:55 | Just like to ask though, if ever my screen protector is indeed blocking the proximity sensor, should sensor testing apps like Screebl not detect the proximity sensor? resulting to 0.0 point? Considering I'm moving my hands/ears to my phone or vice-versa? Thanks! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 18/01/16 10:12 | I have done even more testing with this bug. I have found the following (for me, on a Nexus 6 with no screen protector) 1: Reboot phone. The Proximity sensor will work fine for a few days 2: After a few days, the proximity sensor gets "laggy". It is slow to realise when it's next to my face etc. Testing with the sensors app shows this lagginess, it will often stay at 0.000 even when my fingers are removed, sometimes for up to 4-5 seconds before clearing and reverting to 5.000 3: Once it's gotten laggy, it takes less than 24 hours for it to "give up" totally. The proximity sensor fails. No matter what I do, the reading in the sensors app will remain 0.000 Rebooting it clears the problem. I think I will open another ticket for this, since this one is full of muppets saying "removing your screen protector" without understanding the actual issue. It seems to me that there's some sort of auto-calibration algorithm at play here, but it trends downwards and never resets itself. This is pure speculation, I have no evidence to back up this wild theory, so please do not share this dumb theory as fact anywhere. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Basil Hendroff | 18/01/16 17:12 | Finally, a really thorough attempt at troubleshooting the problem. Well done! Wish the screen protector muppets would get off this post. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Chuck08 | 18/01/16 17:52 | That's what I thought as well, because if the screen protector is the culprit here, it should also happen on other phones. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | bakabanana | 19/01/16 05:25 | I dunno if anyone's getting this too but whenever I receive a call, the screen won't turn off even after I slap my ear so hard. I have to press the power button to turn the screen off. Rebooting sometimes fixes the problem but it will come back later. (No screen protector here nor case). Is anyone having this problem too or is my sensor screwed? Edit: Both incoming and outgoing calls are affected |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | jonesmatty75 | 21/01/16 18:36 | AHHHHH, this is so annoying. My battery is dying! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Will Stecho | 22/01/16 05:07 | This sounds like the same problem. It's the proximity sensor. You can download a sensor diagnostics app like "sensor sense" to confirm. The proximity and light sensor readings will be blank because there is no input from them. A reboot will solve the problem, but it will promptly start recurring within an hour or so. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Will Stecho | 22/01/16 05:12 | I think I've found a solution! I rooted my phone and installed Cyanogen Mod 12.1. 3 days in so far and no sensor problems yet. CM12.1 is based on Lollipop, soIm not sure if the Marshmallow-based CM13 will work. My previous unsuccessful attempts at a fix included completely replacing the sensor hardware, but replacing the software is the only thing that has worked at all so far, so I'm convinced it's a software bug. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Ofir Kedem | 24/01/16 06:44 | Hi Orrin, I'm experiencing this when trying to make calls on Skype and WhatsApp as well. The screen goes black and I can't get it out of that state untill the call has ended (I can't hang up) it if I restart the phone. Yes, I have a screen protector on. I have a nexus 6p, running marshmallow 6.01. Any updates? |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Ofir Kedem | 24/01/16 06:46 | Happens on all calls, regardless of lengh of call. Yes I have a screen protector on |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Rohit Maheshwari | 07/02/16 02:37 | Same problem with my Nexus5 post Marshmallow update and with my new Nexus 5X. DIsplay doen't wake up during the call. It is clearly Marshmallow issue. I heard that Goodle has done it intentionally to save battery! I mean how can you do this?? |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Simon Worthington-Eyre | 07/02/16 20:54 | OMG this is still a problem on my brand new Nexus 5X, i downloaded an app that checks all the phone sensors and the proximity sensor is not working at all. It is causing several problems with the most frustrating being the screen locking up during calls. i have to press the power button twice after the call has ended just to end the call...Also since the update my gmail emails do not automatically come through, i have to enter the gmail app then all my emails come through at once....this is not good enough Google, it is a very frustrating issue....I do have a tempered glass screen protector on my phone which may not help, but i have seen many people posting that they have no screen protectors and the same issue is happening to them too.....My god when is this going to be fixed, the Nexus phones are meant to show the world the best of android, well right now all i see is the worst of Android!!!! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Vishal Nikam | 07/02/16 23:26 | Hi, I purchased Nexus 6P a day before.. the screen turns blank as soon as I make a call and stays black for 30 seconds after hanging up from other end. screen is protected by a screen guard which has been completly cleaned up. I dont want to remove my screen guard either. Is there any option to deactivate the proximity sensor?? My device has been upgraded to 6.0.1. Please help |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 08/02/16 09:48 | I have a new theory about this. Is everyone using VLC? I have noticed recently the one thing that *appears* to correlate with the issue appear is using VLC. I won't have the problem, but then I'll let my daughter watch Peppa Effing Pig on my phone and then boom, the issue happens. However, I can't reproduce the issue straight away, that is running VLC and watching Peppa doesn't seem to trigger it. But it dies shortly afterwards. So, anyone else who notices this use VLC on a regular basis? (There is no way an app should be able to nuke the proximity sensor, so regardless it's still some sort of hardware/firmware issue) I have opened a ticket here, could those affected and NOT using a screen protector add to the case? DO NOT spam the case with "me too". Add debug logs or detailed feedback. https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=199114 Thanks. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | lucashipkins | 01/03/16 13:42 | TRY THIS I have been having the same issue with my 6P. When I make or receive a call, and I put my ear to the phone, the screen does not turn off. After 30 secs, it turns off, but will not come back on when I take the phone away from my ear. I have found a fix (of sorts). When you make or receive a call, put the call onto loudspeaker, then back onto handset earpiece, then the sensor works perfectly every time (for me). Let me know if this works for you. As this seems to force it to work, it must be a bug as the sensor seems to work perfect. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | escapology | 03/03/16 00:50 | hello! thanks to lucashipkins I realised that my phone was using bluetooth for output in a call although the earpiece was also working. it was because I got the marshmallow update on my huawei watch which enables the speaker on the watch. by then using my watch for making calls over bluetooth, the phone app switched to output over bluetooth, altough actually it doesn't... so by turning off the option to play phone audio on the watch, the "issue" of the non-working proximity sensor is gone on my 6P. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | lucashipkins | 03/03/16 01:02 | BRILLIANT!!! Thanks escapology!!! I am using a Sony Smartband Talk and I too just switched off Phone Audio in Bluetooth settings and now the proximity sensor is working during incoming and outgoing calls. Thanks so much! I will need a day or 2 to fully test this out, but it seems to have worked for me too. Cheers. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | escapology | 03/03/16 01:08 | Well, thanks to you too. Without your hint, I wouldn't have found out! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Samm2.0 | 09/03/16 08:14 | This happens on 100% of my calls. Screen shuts off, does NOT turn back on. I have a Nexus 5x, and this only really started bothering me when my boss decided to up the frequency of calls to my phone. My friends can attest to hearing the arguments I have with my phone when I manage to turn the screen back on during a call, then trip the proximity sensor again and have to spend another minute or so pressing the power button and pressing the fingerprint scanner to coax the screen on again. I ran the AndroSensor app, the proximity sensor is working fine with a Spigen glass screen protector on it. I have read on here the screen protector really doesn't change anything. I'm not fond of the idea of ruining my screen protector "in case that is the issue" when diagnostics clearly point to it not being the cause. I'm a clutz. I threw the phone into safemode to check for any errant apps, and nothing. It's not an app, it's not the screen protector, and it can't be the case, it doesn't cover the screen in any way. |
| Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | lucashipkins | 09/03/16 09:49 | Do you have a smart watch or band attached to your phone via Bluetooth? If yes, go into the devices settings > Bluetooth settings > find the smart device and click the settings cog. Here you need to uncheck Phone Audio. Please let me know if this fixes your issue. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Samm2.0 | 09/03/16 10:17 | Nope. Nothing. The watch is a Moto 360, and my phone does not recognize it as an audio device, so there is no option to shut off. Only "Contact sharing". |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Samm2.0 | 09/03/16 10:19 | My phone is more managable on speakerphone, but only on speakerphone, and I still have to manually turn the screen back on. |
| Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | lucashipkins | 09/03/16 12:24 | Have you tried switching to speaker phone then back to handset earpiece during a call? This worked for me. But my gut feeling is that is your Moto 360 that is causing the problem. Perhaps try unpairing your watch and see if it fixes the issue. |

| Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Samm2.0 | 10/03/16 11:16 | I can officially say, after removing my watch from my phone, that this glitch is NOT because of my Moto 360. I made it so my watch never existed. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | muppetman | 10/03/16 23:14 | I know I've posted a few times on this thread, I thought I should follow up with the fix. Well, it's hardly a fix. I RMA'd my phone and the issue has gone away, however, I know why it's gone away. I shined a bright torch into the proximity sensor of my new N6. It's perfectly clean and clear, you can see the sensor perfectly. I shined the torch into the proximity sensor of my faulty N6. There is a clear layer of dirt/oil/grime on the INSIDE of the glass. How it got there I have no idea, the same grime is als on the inside lens of the light sensor (but not the camera) So that's what was blocking/interfering with the proximity sensor. It was interesting because for me the issue would only show up a day or two (though sometimes much sooner) after a reboot. So there must be some sort of auto-calibration on the sensor that was failing after a while due to the grime. I realise this won't help many people, but for me it was a hardware issue. I wonder reading the above how many other people just have a faulty/non-operational proximity sensor and an RMA would fix the issue. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Samm2.0 | 11/03/16 07:47 | Depends. Some people found it was a smart watch, some people found it was an errant app, a few found it was a greasy film over the sensor. But for the majority of us, no. Proximity sensor still goes stupid during calls for no reason. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Popincho | 14/03/16 23:59 | Hey guys, I think I found something about this issue. I had exactly the same issue in a Nexus 5x. During calls, screen got on and off randomly and mainly was a problem when I had the phone in my face, talking, screen got on and I touch some action, ... Well, digging in forums, etc, saw somewhere that Ambient Display was mentioned as potential root cause, so well disabled this functionality and voila, issue solved. Indeed timing makes sense, this was something introduced in recent Android versions and most of the people claims about this issue appeared with Android 5.1.1, or 6.0... So, I would say this is actually some kind of conflict between Ambient Display and Dialer/Proximity sensor. At least disabling Ambient Display made the trick for me. Ambient display should consider the proximity sensor so to put the screen on!! Google, please fix it! |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | AJSalvador | 16/03/16 05:40 | Same thing on a Moto X since my Huawei watch was updated. I think, in some cases at least, it may be the issue described by escapology (march 3). | Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | FietjeV | 20/03/16 10:58 | I am having the same problem on my Nexus 5X. Black screen after ending calls, or black screen after trying to unlock. I think my case is the cause of it, since I removed my case the problem of black screens after unlock is gone. I think it's really stupid that a case is causing this, I want a case to protect my phone, without a case the phone feels vulnerable. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Moh Atef | 14/05/16 03:31 | This happened to me as well after upgrading to 6.0.1, my phone is Sony Xperia Z3 and it was working fine before the upgrade, after the upgrade once the call is initiated the screen goes black, every single time, and I cannot do any on call functions like merging calls or even hanging up, I need to wait tell the other party hang up then the phone becomes responsive again. I have done some tests and I see that the proximity sensor is always on all the time, also when I push with my thumb on the sensor the phone screen respond and become functional, but I have to keep my thumb there all the time, once I remove my thumb the screen becomes black again! Any fix for that? |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Takis Diakoumis | 15/05/16 03:03 | finally solved this after so many months of pain on my nexus 5. Lost some faith in google and nexus in the process. Interesting too now that other vendors are catching up with 6.0.x the same issue is popping up on other devices. Anyway, this may not work for everyone given some subtle differences you can see through this thread. I finally tried what ‘vs3rrano’ suggested further up the thread back in march. I was hesitant partly because I don’t like to fiddle too much and had not even rooted my device yet. Anyway found some corroborating references elsewhere around sensor issues and how to resolve them. I started with a factory reset – which did nothing! I then figured I had nothing to lose so I rooted my phone and removed the following as suggested originally by vs3rrano: delete the following: /data/system/sensors /data/misc/sensors /persist/sensors/sns.reg I was actually unable to delete /data/misc/sensors for some odd reason so I just renamed it instead. After that I rebooted and bang it worked. I was soooo relieved as I was so pissed by this I was about to get a new phone – which I couldn’t really justify as I otherwise like the nexus 5 and there was nothing wrong with anything else. Still pretty pissed that google rates this a minor bug. Anyway, YMMV but might be worth a shot. Thanks Takis |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | yeopazman | 15/05/16 03:14 | how do you access /data/system/sensors? Can you do a step by step? |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Takis Diakoumis | 15/05/16 03:25 | you need to unlock and root your phone. i followed directions for that here: ... but theres a few variations on that too. you can also use https://kingroot.net/ which might be easier... i did it from linux using adb and fastboot programs. kingroot on windows may be easier. the kingroot psk file did NOT work for me. be aware, you will likely lose ALL your stuff so backup as required, and i mean [ ALL ] your stuff. rooting takes a bit to get through (be patient) and then on reboot you have system root access. get a file manager app and this should now show you the contents of the root dir /. thats all there is for that. navigate to those files/dirs and delete them (or rename where you can't delete). then reboot your phone. hope this helps. let me know if anything is unclear... |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Mangocrate | 06/06/16 07:23 | My Nexus 5 (orig) had the problem for a while, then was fixed at
some point with some Android patch - not sure which. Then, I
recently did a factory reset on my phone and the problem returned.
Pulling out my hair I ended up trying "Proximity Sensor

and the problem has gone away. Something with the calibration that
needs to be rewritten. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Renato Siqueira | 06/06/16 12:45 | The same problem for me. Nexus 6P - Android N Beta. The handset does not respond after the call has ended. Even when pressing the Power button, the screen remains off. Control is regained only after about 10 seconds or so. The problem occurs 100% of times... |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Ranjeet Singh04 | 07/06/16 02:56 | I have recently bought nexus 6p and having same problem. In my CASe its not only in phone calls but also in normal use. When sunlight hits sensor while phone is in dark place. Eg sunlight from window. Also while travelling in bus at night while everything is dark except light hitting from bus roof. Its such a irritating thing. And if u can trust me then I am not using any kind of screen protection or case. Its completely default. I am amazed to see that this issue has been reported since last year and still no proper solution. Weird but its shame. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | GregAndo | 07/06/16 15:22 | I too tried updating to Android N preview after a full factory reset. I did not restore any apps or settings, only Google account was the same. I used the phone with no extra apps apart from a sensor tester app. Less than 24 hours later, the proximity sensor was dead. Again, a reboot restores the proximity sensor functionality. I am now going to downgrade the entire firmware to 5.0 and see what results I get. If it still has issues, I will accept it as a hardware issue. |

Would prefer to have the screen stay on and that way the prox sensor can kiss my patootie... |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Mrutyunjaya Jena | 14/07/16 01:11 | I recently bought a Moto G4 plus model from amazon India. It was pre installed with 6.0 and I'm facing the same mentioned issue in it. I tried the below steps 1. While calling put your finger/palm on top of the sensor and remove it. After doing it one or couple of times the screen comes up. 2. While receiving the call once you take the phone away from your ears, do the same step again. that brings the screen up. This is not a solution to this weird bug of course. Just see if it works or not for you. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Dino Burns | 19/07/16 02:22 | Currently to fix the issue completely is the USER flash the official rom back to 6.0.0, but be simple, Google just add back "Keep Screen ON During Call" can solve all the problems. Proximity sensor SHOULD NOT be a major sensor for a phone. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | JohnFabian | 19/07/16 07:07 | Where do you see "Keep Screen On During Call" having been added back by Google? | Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Punkt Bild | 25/08/16 19:30 | I had the same Problem. The glass of the phone is covered with a protection sheet and there is a small hole for the proximity Sensor where dust which I did not see covered the glass. At first the Sensor works and when you get a call and bring the phone to the ear the Sensor switched to near but the dust is the reason why it dies not Switch back again and the screen stays Black. Clean the glass at the Sensor as good as you can and try if it works. |

| Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Punkt Bild | 26/08/16 07:47 | Ich flashed version Android 4, 5 and 6. It has no relation to the software, no version was working, the sensor did not work right. I tested the sensor with an app and saw that it works, but it did not switch back. I think the dust on the glass became electified loaded by the electric or magnetic field of the sensor and this status irritated the sensor. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | GuyWithN5 | 07/09/16 11:23 | Sensor problem here as well. During a call, it can be impossible to turn the screen on. I'll try everything, and I can only get it to flash for an instant. I've had to power my phone off twice now to end calls. I still like the device. But using it as a phone has been very frustrating. This seems like it should be an easy fix, but this thread is OLD! C'mon Google, don't let me down. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | André Rosa | 11/09/16 15:19 | I found the solution (at least for my case). Over a year with this issue. Correct me if I am wrong, but google never helped us with this matter. It's outrageous.. I used xposed to disable the sensor (Framework: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811 and Program: http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.mrchandler.disableprox). If you have Nougat, you'll have to downgrade (it was my case). |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | PulkitAgrawal | 13/10/16 06:33 | My proximity sensor on my nexus 5 has gone bonkers since I updated it to the october security patch. The screen doesn't turn off while I am holding the phone on my ear during calls. This leads false touches sometime even disconnecting the call. |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | JohnFabian | 13/10/16 07:52 | The option "Use Power Button to end calls" doesn't really work for me (when you need the screen to use touch tones for example, I need the power button to get the screen back on). I'd rather have the option back to disable the "Turn Off Screen During Call". It really would be nice to get a comment from Google to at least understand the issue. Is it really a software problem they can't get finally resolved? Or is it just that the hardware is failing, maybe off and on? (Apparently proximity sensors fail a lot, according to another thread.) In that case, I hope they found a new supplier for the sensor in the Pixel phones (and an admission of the problem would be more Google-esk than just ignoring it). |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Dino Burns | 19/10/16 00:07 | The problem cause by the newer driver of proximitry senosor, from 5 to 5x. If ur phone installed the 6.0.1 update, ur driver screwed. The power btn ends call might help for end coversation, but sometimes we gotta enter some numbers during the call, that moment, our phone did nth. Thay very annonying. |

For anyone, like me, that is having the proximity sensor almost always was stuck in "near" state, please follow this simple steps: !!!! [This method requires root privileges] !!!! From root explorer or similar program delete these folders and file: 1 - /data/system/sensors 2 - /data/misc/sensors 3 - /persist/sensors/sns.reg Restart phone and have fun with calls again!! I tried this, and my sweet NEXUS 5 is back on duty!! Credits to this post: |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Takis Diakoumis | 30/10/16 19:35 | yep - that does work... i did this a little while ago, but following a few recent android system updates, its back to where it was in hell again. i think once you do this, you have to forfeit any further updates or your phone will revert to bad behaviour... i doubt there was any attempt to address this issue - certainly not with the new Pixel range focus now too. not sure what it says about google product support in general or are they just as bad as the rest... anyway... |
| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | tiagopinho | 31/10/16 04:16 | Do it like I did! | Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | IceCub | 03/01/17 23:11 | It's not a sensor or software issue. I disassembled my phone yesterday (Nexus 5) in search for the cause of the problem and I think I found it. The problem is the double adhesive tape used to hold the digitizer doesn't have holes cut out where the proximity sensor and front camera goes (it practically covers the sensor and camera). Over time dust accumulates and that double adhesive tape becomes opaque => the proximity sensor stops working and images taken with the front camera look like crap. I cut some holes in that double adhesive tape so it wouldn't cover the sensor and camera => the sensor started working properly and the pictures taken with the front camera look sharper. |

| Re: Has Android ver 6.0 interfered with proximity sensor on my Nexus 5? | Washington I | 14/01/17 09:18 | Same issue here, I don't use cases or screen protectors. My proximity sensor has its value all the time at 0.0cm as if it was always close to my face. The secondary Lux value for detecting light shifts with light conditions without a problem. Therefore, all the calls received or ongoing turn off the screen of my Nexus 5. I've been reading online all kinds of fixes and apps that don't work, I'd like to revert back to Lollipop but it's not possible with a factory reset. By the way, factory reset or debug mode don't resolve the issue. Is there any way this could be fixed? It's very annoying, almost rendering the phone useless to use it as such, a phone. |
