"OK Google" does not work, Google search bar returns nothing, Google now does not work. I have a Nexus 6p and every else works fine, these apps just don't do anything. I've installed and uninstalled the Google launcher.

Hi Matthew,

Welcome to the Google Search Help Forum. Could you please try the following:
  • Check that no other apps are causing a conflict or blocking the Google app.
  • Check to see if other apps are accessible
  • Force close all apps
  • Turn off the phone completely
  • Turn on the phone
Please let me know if that helps by sharing an update as soon as you can! Thanks!

I have been having a similar issue recently. I have a Nexus 6P and have issues when I am searching via typing in the google now search bar, using voice search, or clicking a Google Now card for deeper information. the search initiates as indicated by the blue loading bar, but then seems to crash when trying to transfer the search to the Chrome browser. My suspicion is an issue with the Google app itself.

Here are troubleshooting steps I've taken so far without success of fixing:
1) Cleared cache on Google Now
2) "unistalled" Google Now and reinstalled - although seems I can't do a full reinstall since its the default launcher?
3) Reinstalled Google Chrome
4) Rebooted phone

Any other troubleshooting steps would be appreciated

Hi Mathew and Brandon,

Welcome to the Nexus Help Forum.

Sorry to hear your having problems with your Google Search feature (i.e "Ok Google") not working on your Nexus 6P. To troubleshoot this problem, try restarting your Nexus 6P in safe mode, which temporarily disables any third-party apps to see if one of them is causing the problem. If Google Search works in safe mode, then it’s a good signal that a third-party app is the root of the problem. If this is the case, trying updating or uninstalling your most recent app(s) to see if this fixes the problem. To see your most recent apps, go to your Google play store account and My Apps.

Let me know if running safe mode is helpful or not.

[Please note: running safe mode on your Nexus device can change your widget and wallpaper settings].

Regards,
JP

Hi JP,

Thanks. Unfortunately, I have now tried safe mode a few times and the issue persists. Something is perhaps corrupted with the Google or Google Chrome apps, or the Google Now launcher itself. I'm at a loss as to how to solve and may eventually explore phone replacement with Google. Its unfortunate having this issue with my Nexus 6P which is supposed to showcase this feature.

Hi Brandon,

Ok if its happening in safe mode, it's less likely this is an app compatibility issue. Have you tried running a factory reset? If not, I recommend this option as this will restore all your system files including Google Search and the Chrome browser. I'm listing both factory options which you can try either or both.

Factory Data Reset From Settings

(This will reset the device to the condition it was in when unboxed with the exception of the operating system that will remain on the latest installed version).

This is the easiest method to follow if you have access to your settings page. Go to Settings and Backup & Reset from there.

Please note that automatically reinstalling third party apps following a factory reset may re-introduce any app-related problems that were the initial reason for resetting. It is best to re-install the apps just a few at a time in order to isolate any that are causing conflict. Any problem apps should be uninstalled, updated or reported to the developer, via the app’s Google Play page to obtain advice.

Factory Resetting From Recovery

(This will reset the device to the condition it was in when unboxed with the exception of the operating system that will remain on the latest installed version).

  1. If your tablet is on, turn it off.

  2. Press and hold the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Power button at the same time until the tablet turns on. You'll see the word "Start" with an arrow around it.

  3. Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery."

  4. Press the Power button to start Recovery mode. You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command".

  5. While holding down the Power button, tap and release the Volume Up button. (Do not hold the Volume Up button down as this will reboot the device).

  6. Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "wipe data/factory reset," then press the Power button to select it.

  7. Press the Volume Down button seven times to highlight "Yes - erase all user data," then press the Power button to select it.

  8. After the reset is complete, press the Power button to select the option to reboot your device.

  9. When you've finished, follow these steps to restore your data.

If the problem persists despite carrying out all of the above, you can use this form to request a call back or chat with a Google Nexus Support agent who can discuss your options with you.

I found a resolution without having to do a factory reset, thankfully. I had to select "Clear Google Search Data" from my google app's storage setting menu. I had previously only cleared launcher data in this menu. Glad I'm all set now and thanks for your time

Can you give details steps? I'm not quite sure where you're telling me to go. I don't see storage settings in Google app.

I have this same issue with the Nexus 5X. I have to restart the phone a couple times a day to get anything in Google Now working.
