Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Paul 11/1/13 2:52 PM
The Nexus 5 is an unlocked phone that uses a micro SIM card.

To determine if the Nexus 5 will work on your preferred carrier in any country you can look up which radio bands the carrier uses on their website, and then compare them to the radio bands that the Nexus 5 supports:

North America
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41

Rest of World
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20

If you have detailed questions about any given carrier and the services they provide, please reach out to them directly. Also, please feel free to discuss your experiences in this thread.

Is it possible to get a "Rest of World" version in U.S.?
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Yousif 11/2/13 2:49 AM
I ordered mine from US, will it still support the Rest of World bands?

Only B3 is supported when I will be using the phone!

Use the Rest of the World Nexus!
3G will work Fine for Both but not 4G lTE

Wait, how do you order a "Rest of the World" Nexus vs a "North America" Nexus? Is that really an option?
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Yousif 11/2/13 10:43 AM
When you order from US play store you get this into Technical specifications page:

Network
2G/3G/4G LTE
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41

When ordering form other countries, it change to those ones:

Network
2G/3G/4G LTE
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20

Still, no one can confirm if there's a two models or one that role them all though!
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? fawzib 11/2/13 10:55 AM
there are two models for sure and you can only order the bands supported in USA if you live in USA. I want the international one as I'm traveling soon and UK price is $500+.

Anyway to order the international version inside USA?

I just spoke to Google too, and I was told that there are 2 versions of the nexus 5... I guess it's too late anyway; I've already ordered it to Canada and I'm not able to cancel the order. Anyone want to buy a Nexus 5??

As i mean, that model buying in US will not work with LTE in Europe? And model, buying in Europe will not work with LTE in North America? That's right?

Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Yousif 11/3/13 4:51 AM
Nothing confirmed so far, GSM Arena shows only one model until now :

I also bought a Nexus 5 from US. I'm currently in US for a short visit and I'll be travelling back to Sri Lanka.

It seems Sri Lanka has 4G LTE 1800 Band 3 [1].

According to the information I found if we buy the Nexus 5 from US, we will get the "North America" version and all other countries' Google Play store will ship the "Rest of World" Nexus 5.

I'm yet to receive my Nexus 5 and I'm already worried about this information :(

We all in the same boat. Waiting official confirmation from Google as their contact center keep giving mixed feedback!
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Yousif 11/3/13 7:35 AM
Wait, can you justify why is it 500$ in UK?!
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Arnis V 11/3/13 12:18 PM
I think it is quite clear now.

There are two Nexus 5 versions.
  1. Nexus 5 D820 model (North America)
    • GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
    • CDMA: Band Class - 0/1/10
    • WCDMA: Bands - 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
    • LTE: Bands - 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41

  2. Nexus 5 D821 model (Rest of the world)
    • GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
    • WCDMA: Bands - 1/2/4/5/6/8
    • LTE: Bands - 1/3/5/7/8/20

Some people have received answers from Google informing that there is only one version available and it isn't actually incorrect because you are asking about U.S. Google Play and from there you can indeed get only one version - D820 (North America). If you want to get D821 model, then you will have to buy it from any other country that are selling Nexus 5 in Google Playstore (UK, Australia, Germany, Spain, etc.).

Google has confirmed that for me:

"Unfortunately, you won't be able to purchase the world version of the NEXUS 5 in the U.S. Google Playstore."

If you want to buy Nexus 5 in U.S. Google Playstore and use it in other country, you can still do it. It will work just fine except for one thing - if your carrier for 4G is using any of LTE bands 3, 7, 8 or 20 then only LTE (4G) will not work for you, 3G and voice will still work. That's it.

Just search up your country and see which model you should buy.

Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Paul Basov 11/6/13 10:48 AM
So a lot of people imported Nexus 5's from US to other (even european) countries, where there are a lot of different carriers.
But most of them use LTE bands 20 and 7.

And we know that there are two kind of N5s: d820 (North-American version) and d821 ("Rest of the world").
As your Google Play Device Store pages state, the difference is in supported LTE and CDMA bands.

Now, the question - "Is hardware really different, or is it just about "radio" firmware that controls it?"
Basically, people are wondering if one could flash the right software to use proper LTE bands in Europe with D820 ("North American") variant of the Nexus 5.

It would be amazing if you guys could answer this question for us, early adopters. This would help people to use the device fully to its' potential and travel to other countries, knowing that they will be able to use LTE.
Thanks
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Roy Røv 11/6/13 11:01 AM
my guess is that if it were software, why have two models?
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Paul Basov 11/6/13 11:04 AM
To comply with FCC regulations.
I understand that this is hail-mary kind of post, but the answer would help a lot of people to decide, whether they want to import a phone, or wait for a local stock to arrive.
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Yousif 11/6/13 11:08 AM
As I asked before, is it even possible to implement all these bands into one chip, Qualcomm?!
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Paul Basov 11/6/13 11:16 AM
Well, Apple did it with the new iPad, so why not?
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Zong Gu 11/6/13 11:24 AM
I really wish I could purchase this in the US before moving to HK.

To this extent (laughing...):

I've used a UK VPN and searched playstore from google.co.uk...but when I get to the purchase screen after the PRICES COME UP AS EURO'S, the model still defaults to the US LTE band model.

Sigh...anyone here have any other (un)brilliant ideas??
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Paul Basov 11/6/13 11:37 AM
Just got this from Google Play Support, not much help:

Hello Paul,
Thank you for contacting Google! I understand you are interested with the hardware specifics of the Nexus 5 variants. I know that you want to know as much about your device as possible to use it as effectively as possible. Rest assured I've provided what information I can for you.
The internal workings on the Nexus 5 beyond the device specification are proprietary and not subject to disclosure. The Nexus 5 version you receive when you order a Nexus 5 is determined by the country you are ordering the device in. There is no way to get around this when making your purchase through Google Play.
If you order a Nexus 5 in North America your device will work with these bandwidths:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41
If you order a Nexus 5 outside of North America your device will work with these bandwidths:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20
If you have any further questions or concerns, reply directly to this email to contact me personally. Also, you can visit our help center at:

Judging by the thread title, this is the correct place to ask for help.

I am an American who has been living for the past several years in the Czech Republic.  I've recently come back to the US for 6 months, I know that I'll be returning to live in the CR for a few more years and I have been looking at getting a phone that will work in both places.

I understand that the US version won't work on many foreign LTE networks.  I would be satisfied with that if I knew that it would work with voice and some data (I would hope for 3G, but even 2G would be ok).  I have tried to research the issue, including calls to Google's customer service center.  Along with the info in the original post, I've also found some other information that you may be able to help me decipher.  Can anyone tell me if in the Czech Republic the Nexus 5 will work with 1) voice?  ...and 2) 2G or 3G data?  That would be soooo helpful!  Thanks in advance for anyone who helps explain if CDMA or WCDMA are related to UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+ or DC-HSPA+.

Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? John Buell 11/16/13 10:51 AM
In the US, all of the phone providers have locked networks - only specific white-listed devices will work on their networks. So it doesn't matter if you have a phone that uses the same network technology. Virgin Mobile USA uses the Sprint network, but only with phones they white-list. So even though the Nexus 5 is technically capable of working on the network, VM USA will not allow the phone as of early November. So all of the speculation that because it shares network technology it will work on X network is flatly untrue and highly misleading. Google is happy for you to buy their phone however, and T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint are happy to sign you up. It will not work on Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile USA, etc. etc. etc.

Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? david.king 11/18/13 6:27 AM
Just adding some clarification:

There are 2 models of Nexus 5. The D820 version of the Nexus 5 is designed for North America and will connect to 2G, 3G or LTE on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. The D821 version of the Nexus 5 is set up to work with the rest of the world. European users should have no problem with a 2G, 3G or LTE connection. However, some of the Asian carriers that use different networks could pose a problem.

Cheers
David

CDMA Band, Downlink, Uplink
0, 860~894, 815~849
1, 1930~1990, 1850~1910
10, 851~940, 806~901

China Telecom uses CDMA Downlink 866~870 Uplink 821~825, which is contained in both Band 0 and 10, but it doesn't work in real world test, why?

and on the box, it looks like it supports LTE TD2600, so it should support China Mobile's TD-LTE on 2600, but it doesn't work in real world test too

am I missing something?

have u ever check it?

china mobile will use TDD-LTE with band 39,40,41, and D820 model support band 41
so maybe it can be use in Chinamobile. but if it can't work , i also don't know why.
but iphone5s model A1530+ support the whole 38,39,40, and it has been proved ok in real network

so i think it is the difference
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? JimmyZ.Z 11/28/13 10:13 PM
never mind, the way used to unlock sprint band 41 also works for China Mobile, as for China Telecom, someone compiled a new kernel managed to get to the DIAG mode, turns out, all CDMA settings are specific for Sprint, change some settings does make it work with China Telecom.

I still wonder, why?

Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Yousif 11/30/13 2:25 AM
Yes it will work. It's already unlocked so you only need to insert your SIM, or Micro-SIM (The same in Nexus 4 size)

The only thing that will not work is LTE (4G) connectivity, but you will still be able to connect to your 3G network normally and enjoy the Internet while you get into home or office again where it will switch to your Wifi!! See, it's not a really big deal unless you're using your phone all the way in the road to stream HD YouTube or something! :)

Sadly as per the google play store there is no way of getting the international edition when inside the U.S. and viceversa. This is a big problem for military, government civilians that go overseas and others. I wish there was an exchange option for a fee as I am currently heading to Japan and it worries me that most companies are expanding to LTE band 3.

Dear Ranjeet and everyone,

D820 (US Model) will still work in your country for making phone calls and browsing the web in 3G speed. The only thing that will not be supported is the LTE/4G connectivity if your country use different bands from US's.

Everyone outside the US gets one specific model - people who order it for on the American Playstore get one specific model.

That said, I think you should be able to check it in the bootloader screen of the phon.

And is it unlocked available on google play store.
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? shaheerk 12/24/13 10:17 AM
You should ask your operator which frequency they operate their LTE on (you could also Google it or read it off Wikipedia) and then see which model works for you.

But - I must say that since there are a plethora of frequencies available for LTE, you may or may not be able to get the N5 to work on your carrier. Just double-check with your carrier as well.

Hey guys,

I'm a bit confused tbh, but I am beginning to understand. There is just one problem, I want to buy from this website to the UK http://www.eglobaldigitalstore.co.uk/lg-nexus-5-16gb-d820-us-version-unlocked-mobile-phones.html
It looks safe and it is £40+ cheaper than anywhere in the UK. I think it will work as I went through wikipedia and it shares the same bandwidth thingy.
Yet it says it run's on a Nano-Sim ??

SIM Card TypeNano SIM

I thought only iPhones run on a Nano Sim in the UK and I thought the Nexus 5 ran on a Micro-Sim? Is there a difference? Should I be conserned? And should I just buy from Google play?

Sorry, lots of questions :)

Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? shaheerk 12/27/13 10:59 AM
That's incorrect information - it only uses a mini SIM, like half of the other phones. The only phone to actually use the nano SIM is the iPhone, as you pointed out - so I'd say it's a typo. Also,  it seems that piece of info was written BEFORE the phone was released - here's why:

Other specs likely to be offered on the Nexus 5 are Wi-Fi, 4G support, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, Nano SIM card slot, USB Slim Port, HTML5 browser, 8MP primary HD camera, front cam, GPS and a built-in non-removable battery.

Also, just curious - you want to buy the US version from a UK retailer? Are you in the US or UK? The US version will most likely NOT work in Europe or the rest of the other world, since they use slightly different frequencies. Also, it's advisable for you to take the device from your country's Play Store in case you need to have it serviced for warranty - unless these guys are giving warranty too (but then, if you live in the US and want to claim your warranty, you'll probably pay for shipping...)

Curious as to whether I can use the nexus 5 on KDDI AU network in Okinawa Japan.  Of the 2 models mentioned, the only LTE band KDDI had that's compatible is 1.  Also, I think it's CDMA network so wouldn't they have to patch it into the network somehow?  Please key me know if anyone has any info.  Thanks
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Deepak Saria 12/30/13 10:09 AM
Ill suggest better buy from play store as it is a safe bet! After sale service is always better via Google play rather than lg. I also bought from a local retailer now I need to visit the local lg service Centre for repairs. N in any case if u need a replacement u need to deposit Ur handset fr at least 10 to 15 days in these service Centre. Whereas Google supplies you 1st with a replacement set than takes away Ur faulty handset.

Hi Roberto,

How did you get your nexes 5 to work. Im having trouble with Vivo.
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? VesNL 1/28/14 4:12 PM
Hi Luis,

Have you contacted Vivo themselves If you bought the international (D821) version it should work as the bands Vivo covers are the ones the international one supports.

Check the APN settings if they match

you are saying nexus 5 bought from USA will work in India......Well i have a question whether this will work india...

its a on-contract phone.....if i buy it in USA & dont start the contract......& directly bring it to India.....will it work or do i need to unlock it first...?
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Anurag Jainani 1/30/14 12:13 AM
How to enable all LTE bands:

You need to have a Sprint Sim card in, and then go to the secret menu

[code removed]

If you don't know your MSL, theres an app for that...Once your in the menu, set the bands according!

Got the same issue Isuru. I ordered my Nexus 5 from eBay and after receiving it only, I came across that in Sri Lanka it is Band 3 or 1800 Mhz (both Dialog and Mobitel). I was trying many ways but this North American version is not supported with Sri Lankan 4G LTE. :(

Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Guru Prasad K 5/6/14 12:23 AM

Hi Paul - I have a Google Nexus 5 which runs on Android 4.4.2.

Problem Statement: I am from India and there are set of numbers here for used for emergency. For example, when you dial 108 from any ordinary phone, one can call Ambulance service. However, I noticed in my new phone that when i dial the same number (i.e. 108) it says 'emergency number' and drops the call,

Is there ANY solution to change in settings?

I even called up Airtel (my India Mobile service provider) and Googleplay but no solution found.

Pease help.

Cheers...
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? shaheerk 5/6/14 11:59 AM
Guru, that's an issue you'll find in just about EVERY phone out there - because the emergency number programmed in phones (GSM phones) is 112 by default.

Any other emergency number is country-specific.

It's not an Android-thing.
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Guru Prasad K 5/6/14 8:53 PM
Hello shaheerk : I agree with your statement IF EMERGENCY CALL option is used when phone is locked.

However, number 108 belongs to an Ambulance service (in Chennai, India) which mean, the phone is unlocked & I am keying in 108 and placing call.

The problem is, the CALL WONT MATURE and drops saying emergency call.

This is an issue one of my Good friend is facing.

I personally used an iPhone and had issues with dialling 1800 numbers & later found that after putting off DIAL ASSIST under settings, And things started working :)

I am also wondering if there is ANY option (Dial Assist) in Android O/S as well / in Nexus 5.

Warm Regards,

Guru
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? shaheerk 5/10/14 1:53 AM
Dial Assist? Is there a link that I could get a look at?

I've never owned an iPhone so I can't say.

But rest assured - it's not Android's fault for not recognizing the emergency contact numbers in a country and letting you bypass any locks/network issues to contact them - it's how it's always functioned. 112 is the provisioned number on cell phones (never dialed it though) and that bypasses everything.

Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Marc-André Beauchamp 5/23/14 8:48 AM
Hi everyone,

Two version of Nexus 5 device exist.
D820 for the North America (USA/Canada) exist and D821 for the other countries in the world.

If you buy the device on the American Google Play Store, you will receive the D820 which will most likely not compatible with the networks of your country.
The best solution is to buy the device in a mobile carrier that will sell the D821in your country.

Pleasure.

You dont, there is only one, it supports both.
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? David D Stanton 6/9/14 12:16 AM
The provisioned numbers updates based on the country/sim you have on generaly, if your provider has that data on their sim's.

My provisioned numbers rotate between 112, 911, and 999 depending on which sim I have in.

I bought nexus 5 direct from the US D820 and it is compatible with the bands in our country (Philippines). The international version D821 would most likely be compatible to the rest of the world.

Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Anthony Andrea 10/13/14 12:43 AM
I just recently purchased a Nexus 5 through Koodo in Canada. I plan on moving to Japan in about 6 months. Any ideas as to what my options are in terms of keeping that number as well as the current plan I have? If not, I suppose I could just use the phone in Japan on a carrier there perhaps? Thank you!

Also, I read somewhere about GoogleVoice and linking phone numbers or something along those lines.. so I wonder if that's the option to go with? Hmm..
Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Kerry Webb 10/13/14 9:16 AM
Hi there Anthony.  Google voice may be just what you're looking for.  Just login with your Google username and password.  You can have the option of choosing your own number or getting a completely new number and it will be forwarded to your existing mobile number. If you don't want to go through the hassle of telling all your contacts your Google voice number, you might just want to port your number to your new carrier. There's actually several options you have and those are just a couple.

Re: Will the Nexus 5 work in this country/on that carrier? Anthony Andrea 10/13/14 9:50 AM
Thanks for all your information. I guess I'd have to check with Koodo regarding this, but am I able to put my current SIM (phone number and account with it) on hold while I'm away? Essentially suspending my current account while I'm away? If I can do that, I should be able to bring my Nexus 5 with me and activate a Japanese SIM card with one of their carriers, like SoftBank for example, and continue using my Nexus 5, just with a new SIM in it? Thanks again!
