Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Ashida 09/10/16 11:01
My friend uses an iPhone 6 and I use a Nexus 6. When she texts me large messages, it turns everything into this: "䁉䁦䀠䁹䁯䁵䀠䁳䁥䁮䁤䀠䁭䁥䀠䁡䀠䁰䁨䁯䁴䁯䀠䁯䁦䀠䁭䁹䀠䁨䁯䁵䁳䁥䀠䁡䁴䀠䀱䀠䁡䁭䀬䀠䁉䀧䁭䀠䁧䁯䁩䁮䁧䀠䁴䁯䀠䁧䁩䁶䁥䀠䀠䁹䁯䁵䀠䁯䁮䁥堼Ꞑ堽홍✨" and I have no idea why it happens. Any ideas?
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Nathan K. 09/10/16 11:21
Ashida, it sounds like the issue described here. It sounds like a Unicode conversion error either on your or your friend's side.

I tried a couple combinations but was unable to find what variation of encodings this is. I suggest checking the Language settings on you and your friends' phones and making sure they are both set to "US English" as the default language.

(Edit:) Ashida, I think I found the cause.
  • Is your friend Japanese by any chance?
  • Did you used to own an iPhone?
  • Did you remember to "unregister" from iMessage before switching phones?
If I had to guess, you are still receiving iMessages since you did not deregister your account on Apple's site, and this string is some kind of internal Apple iMessage token. Please let me know if my deduction is correct.

I may be misunderstanding how UTF-7 operates.... but it seems like it is close.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Ashida 09/10/16 11:51
She uses a Japanese keyboard along with along with the English keyboard. And I never used iMessage before, never had an iPhone. I think its the Japanese keyboard she uses.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Nathan K. 09/10/16 12:27
Let me escalate this issue to the other experts. There has to be a definite cause somewhere.

Please let us know if other phones also receive garbled messages.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Hayden Hendrix 09/10/16 15:43
This is the same thing that is happening to me! I have a Nexus 6P and my friend has an iPhone 6, we both have AT&T. This started a few days ago. Most of her messages are in English but when she sends a large message I receive it in Chinese symbols. She sent the same message to another friend who has an android and he also received it in Chinese.

I have yet to find a solution and she has gotten irritated.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Nathan K. 10/10/16 12:48
Hayden, can you copy and paste a few messages (complete text) into this forum? I'm still trying to figure out what encoding is going on.

Also, what phone does your friend use? What is your phone OS build (setting -> About phone)? The more details you can provide the better.

  • What phone is the person sending the message using?
(What phone model? What OS version? What build number?)
  • What SMS app is the sender using?

  • What phone is the recipient getting 'Chinese characters' using?
(What phone model? What OS version? What build number?)
  • What SMS app is the recipient using?

  • What is the text of the message they are trying to send?
  • What is the text of the message you are receiving?

I'll add more questions as able.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Hayden Hendrix 10/10/16 13:29

Here is the text i receive "䁹䁥䁡䁨䀠䁪䁵䁳䁴䀠䁴䁲䁹䁩䁮䁧䀠䁴䁯䀠䁦䁩䁮䁤䀠䁡䀠䁷䁡䁹䀠䁴䁯䀠䁢䁥䀠䁨䁡䁰䁰䁹䀠䁡䁢䁯䁵䁴䀠䁷䁡䁩䁴䁩䁮䁧䀠䁬䁯䁮䁧䁥䁲䀠䁴䁯䀠䁧䁥䁴䀠䁭䁡䁲䁲䁩䁥䁤䀮䀠䁉₉䁬䁬䀠䁢䁥䀠䁦䁩䁮䁥䀠䁉₉䁭䀠䁢䁥䁩䁮䁧䀠䁳䁴䁵䁰䁩䁤䀮"
I will attach two screen shots of what her side looks like and what my side looks like.

She has an iPhone 6 running the latest version, and i have a Nexus 6P running Android 7.0, Build Number NBD90X

She is using the regular iPhone messenger.
I was using Textra messaging app but then switched back to Google messenger to see if it would solve the problem but it did not.
Short messages are still received in English.
We both have AT&T
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Nathan K. 10/10/16 16:57
Thanks for that extra information Hayden, that's exactly the type of data I need to push this up the chain!

I'll escalate this new info ASAP and see if I hear anything back. I can only communicate with our Community Manager, but I'll ask he pass this on if the engineers read the thread.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Ashida 10/10/16 19:23
Thank you so much for looking into this :D
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Goran Marnfeldt 10/10/16 23:13
I have exactly the same issue with receiving texts from an iPhone 6s to my Nexus 6. Started last week. Below are my own thoughts on the topic. Sorry for the added stuff about characters and numbers, but I'm cutting and pasting from an email on my phone...

This morning I received this text: "䁄䁩䁤䀠䁉䀠䁫䁥䁥䁰䀠䁹䁯䁵䀠䁡䁷䁡䁫䁥䀿䀡䀠䁉䀠䁭䁥䁡䁮䁴䀠䁴䁯䀠䁳䁥䁮䁤䀠䁢䁹䀠䁥䁭䁡䁩䁬䀠䁳䁯䀠䁹䁯䁵䀠䁷䁯䁵䁬䁤䁮䀧䁴䀠䁧䁥䁴䀠䁡䀠䁢䁥䁥䁰堽"

So, I did a UNICODE lookup on the text, and got the result: "䁄䁩䁤䀠䁉䀠䁫䁥䁥䁰䀠䁹䁯䁵䀠䁡䁷䁡䁫䁥䀿䀡䀠䁉䀠䁭䁥䁡䁮䁴䀠䁴䁯䀠䁳䁥䁮䁤䀠䁢䁹䀠䁥䁭䁡䁩䁬䀠䁳䁯䀠䁹䁯䁵䀠䁷䁯䁵䁬䁤䁮䀧䁴䀠䁧䁥䁴䀠䁡䀠䁢䁥䁥䁰堽"

That translates every character into a 16-bit UNICODE value, instead of the old traditional 8-bit value we call ASCII. This was a transition that's been happening over the last 10 years, so that we can have 65536 different characters instead of the 256 we had in the past. Without this transition, no emoticons or other fun stuff would fit...

All characters are here represented as a 4-digit hex values. Hex means that each digit can have 16 values instead of 10 as in the decimal number system.

So, u4069 means "unicode 0x4069" which is the same as unicode character number 16489 (in decimal value).

Well, all the u4044䁩䁤䀠... starts with u40, looking like an offset, so what if I just remove all those and get 44 69 64 20... I get:

44 69 64 20 49 20 6b 65 65 70 20 79 6f 75 20 61 77 61 6b 65 3f 21 20 49 20 6d 65 61 6e 74 20 74 6f 20 73 65 6e 64 20 62 79 20 65 6d 61 69 6c 20 73 6f 20 79 6f 75 20 77 6f 75 6c 64 6e 27 74 20 67 65 74 20 61 20 62 65 65 70

And interpret them as the old 8-bit ASCII characters instead? I now get: "Did I keep you awake?! I meant to send by email so you wouldn't get a beep"

Makes sense?
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Nathan K. 11/10/16 01:23

That's exactly the line I was working down. :) But I turned away when I couldn't figure out the encoding it used (UTF-8,-16,-32 or what). Your discovery put that in place!

It's indeed a Unicode conversion error! One side treats the message with UTF-16 encoding, the other UTF-8 encoding. (Thankfully the ordering of the bytes was the same, due to UTF-8 only having one endianness. It was just padded out as opposed to scrambled.)

(Please ignore the the presence of a UTF-16 "Byte Order Mark" -- "FE FF" or "FF FE", depending on BE or LE -- at the beginning of the "Chinese" message. That was inserted by my text editor when I saved the text.)

So I am fairly certain the issue is a UTF-8 message (which is a superset of ASCII) being padded out to UTF-16, and hence being rendered incorrectly.

Now the question becomes is it an issue with the Sender or Receiver. The only way I know to test this involves "uninstalling updates" to the Messenger app and potentially losing all text messages. This will rollback the Google text message app to the factory version, and you can see if an update on the Google side broke it. If the problem persists, we know it is a problem on the Apple iPhone side of things.

Temporary fix:

Can you guys temporarily switch to Google Hangouts as your SMS app? That may also help identify the issue. Go to Hangouts -> = icon -> Settings -> SMS -> General -> and change the top entry to "Enabled"? If your friend can send the same exact message, and it is still scrambled, it may help show which app is responsible.

Since Hayden said Textra did not fix it, which is a separate app, I doubt Hangouts will fix it. It looks likely it is either a iPhone problem, or a low-level Android problem. I'll pass these details up ASAP and get back to you when an engineer posts back.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Nathan K. 11/10/16 01:38
One more note: this idea is close, but no cigar. Apostrophes are still stored as "\2089" instead of "\0027".

(Edit:) In Unicode, apostrophes are normally stored as "\2019" right single quote, instead. Interesting.... this suggests it is indeed an iPhone sender issue.

This renders as a "subscript nine" or "₉" in the message. This confuses me, and may provide a hint as to the true cause.

Since long SMS messages WITHOUT apostrophes are also affected, I do not think this is the exact cause, merely a sideproduct
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Goran Marnfeldt 11/10/16 01:39
Thanks for your quick reply, Nathan!
I'll follow your workaround tomorrow, and ask my girlfriend to resend the failing messages, and let you know what happens.
One extra piece of information is that this issue started last week, after she upgraded her iPhone 6s to what I think is iOS 10. I will ask her what exact version it is, and let you know that as well.

All the best
Goran

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Goran Marnfeldt 11/10/16 10:09
Hi again Nathan,

I have now switched to Hangouts and she resent the same messages that turned into Chinese, and they still show up as Chinese, so no difference.
Her version of iOS is 10.0.2 so that's the very latest one, and the Chinese character issue started just after she upgraded last week.
So, I agree it's on the sending iPhone side!
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Nathan K. 11/10/16 15:56
Thanks Goran! I've added your new info into the escalation ticket. I haven't heard back from any engineers yet, but then again they don't typically post to thread directly -- although they may lurk.

If anyone from Apple is reading this, please ping your peeps across the aisle!
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Shane55 12/10/16 08:43
This is also happening to me... Exact same issue. :-/
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Roger Schoch 12/10/16 12:59
I am having the same exact issue on my Nexus 6P.
(inconnu) 12/10/16 13:08 <Ce message a été supprimé.>
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages HarperEngineering 12/10/16 13:12
I also have this issue. My Nexus 6p has been occasionally receiving chinese characters from multiple iPhone users for a week or so.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Ashida 12/10/16 16:19
The person I was sending the messages to was sending the Chinese messages on purpose, it was a dang joke. If nothing works for the other people here, try to see if it's a joke before factory resetting like I did.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Nathan K. 12/10/16 16:33
Ashida, that wasn't a joke. Your friend sent this message: "If you send me a photo of my house at 1 am, I'm going to give you one" followed by an emoji.

This is a real problem, and we're looking into it right now. It seems to be related to the iOS 10.0.2 update.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Ashida 12/10/16 16:41
No no no, I pranked her a long time ago by going to her house at 1am and taking a picture of her house and sending it to her from a number she didn't have. So she did that to get back at me. Its definitely payback.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Shane55 12/10/16 16:47
Well anyway, the problem is real. What's strange is that I can't really figure out what exactly is causing it. Both my brother and girlfriend have an iPhone 6. Both can send me the exact same message and one will turn Chinese and the other doesn't... I feel that emojis might have something to do with it, though, as every message that has done it so far has contained one.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Shane55 12/10/16 16:49
And if you send the same exact message, only without the emoji, then it doesn't occur...
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Ashida 12/10/16 16:54
Nathan where did you go to decode the message? Or how?
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Ashida 12/10/16 18:13
Yeah alright it wasn't a prank, sorry for possibly confusing anyone. The message about the 1am stuff was the message she intended to say but it got turned. But I did find that if she put an emoji in a message, she would have to send me 70 characters or less or it would turn to Chinese. If she sent with no emojis it could be unlimited and never turn to Chinese.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Anthony Pangonas 12/10/16 19:02
I'm having the same issue with me having a iPhone and my friend having a Nexus 5. Im also in the iOS 10 beta and it happens before and after updating to iOS 10.1. I was on the beta for the entire summer and was texting her and we never had this issue until yesterday.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Shane55 12/10/16 19:05
Yep. Started sometime yesterday for me too.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages [adresse e-mail] 13/10/16 07:14
Yup. Me too. iphone six to iphone five. I sent a long message with an emoji. I turned off the phone turned it back on, disabled wifi and that stopped it for now. It began with text bubble being green instead of blue then after turning off and disabling wifi returned to blue again. Just for your continuing info.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages rickcr 13/10/16 07:30
just want to add I'm having the same issue on my 6P.. receiving chinese characters from just one person using an iphone and it's not every message that they send.

Here was what was received

and here is a screenshot of what the message looked like on his phone:

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Meg.Coop 13/10/16 08:44
I'm having the same Chinese characters issue, just started today. I have a Nexus 5 and the message sender has a Samsung s7 Edge. Sender normally texts long messages which come through as MMS. I use Messenger, he uses Next SMS.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages [adresse e-mail] 13/10/16 09:10
Also: But I also translated the characaters individually, and the first three were:

to examine, to survey, to inspect, to visit; to watch or see in secret, to spy, to peep ...
keep on looking / change facial expression
sight blurred, obscure and dim, unclear.

So....?
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Harold Bruning 13/10/16 14:13
Same issue here since Tuesday AM.. not every message does it and we figured out one that did had an emoji in it.. he removed the emoji & sent the same text over & it was fine.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages CodyStupudDisplayname 13/10/16 15:01
It's happening with my one plus too. I'm using textra.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages CodyStupudDisplayname 13/10/16 15:02
She has an Android as well. I think it could have to do with emoji?
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages rdylina 13/10/16 15:28
This started for me yesterday. I have textra also. Samsung Note 5.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Shane55 13/10/16 15:33
I have the 2nd Gen Moto X and also use Textra, but I've already seen in this thread that the issue persists outside of Textra (in Hangouts), so I don't believe the issue lies there? For now everyone has resorted to sending me shorter messages with emojis sent separately... Which is annoying. Hopefully this is fixed soon.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Mark Minafar 13/10/16 16:38
Same issue here, running Nexus 6P Android 7.0 Security Patch Oct 5th, 2016. I'm receiving large Chinese character texts from my wife who just got an iPhone 7 which has the latest version of iOS. Using Google Messenger app 1.9.036
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Alfred Robles 13/10/16 17:43
The same thing is happening to me. I. Have a Nexus 6p and it just started about 2 days ago
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages rickcr 13/10/16 20:22
By the way I'm also not sure if it's related but about the same time I started having the issue with the chinese characters from a single user's texts (no emojis in them and stock messenger on 6P), I've also has another user that sends me texts sometimes end up with me just receiving a "download this message" prompt in Messenger and of course it never downloads. This just started happening about the same time so not sure if it's related or not. It's also random with his texts as well. All this only recently (within the last week) started happening.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Str1ngcheese 13/10/16 21:47
Recently been happening to me as well. I have a Nexus 6P too, and has happened to me when receiving from two different iPhones. I'm sure it would happen with others too but I haven't recently texted anyone else who has an iPhone. I am not 100% sure on the specifications of their phones, only mine. I am running Android 7.0 kernel version 3.10.73-g875b816. I have been receiving quite a lot of these texts, I'd say probably 10% of the texts I receive from these iPhones are the Chinese letters. I see the same common theme; a longish text, maybe 3-4 sentences, and containing an emoji.

One of the iPhones I'm getting the Chinese letters from is actually my girlfriend's phone, and I got tired of just asking for screenshots of what she said (I'm sure it wasn't particularly fun for her either) so every time I get one of those messages I just decode it myself. However this consists of me emailing the original text to myself, using a website to get a string of 16-bit UNICODE values, pasting that string into Microsoft word to find/replace all the values I don't need (the "u40" and the backslashes), then copying/pasting that into a converter to convert that values into readable text. Kind of fun currently, but I'm sure it will get old. Any solution in the near future would be pretty solid.

Additionally, any way to see what emojis are being sent? I can't currently find a way to convert the 16-bit UNICODE values for emojis into actual ones I can see. For example, I can translate everything until the last two strings: 堽

Thanks!

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages MBF40115 13/10/16 23:56
I too have received these messages. What the heck! This is what I get:
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Ali Jo 14/10/16 06:29
I've experienced the same issue a few times over the past week or so. I'm using an up-to-date Nexus 6P, and my friends & family all have iPhones. I'm using Hangouts as my default SMS app.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Eddie Bugayong Jr 14/10/16 12:17
Just wanted to add my experience too.Started receiving these Chinese text messages on Tuesday 10/11/16. I am using a Nexus 6 on Marshmallow 6.0.1 security patch level 10/5/16. My cousin who sent me the text messages uses an iPhone 6 or 6s. Not sure which iOS version he is on. But we are both using AT&T. Just like everyone else, the common theme here is the messages include emoji's. I've had long and short messages with emoji's translating into Chinese. Hope theres an update soon!
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Darlene Wise 14/10/16 14:16
It is happening with Nexus 5 also.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Charlie Snow 14/10/16 15:50
My situation is a little different. i'm on my macbook sending messages to my wife's phone. the only time we can get it to happen is if i use quotes on the computer. i can't get it to happen from my iphone with or without quotes. she has a galaxy 7 edge and i have an iphone 7, we are both on the latest OS and so is my macbook.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages T-Dubs329 14/10/16 16:58
Figured I'd add to the pile on. This is happening to me as well with random messages from my wife.

It first happened after I updated my Nexus 6P to 7.0 running the PureNexus ROM four days ago. We tested with a particular message that was giving an error and removing the emoji fixed the problem for that message. I then cleared the devices cache. She resent the message and I received it correctly. Then today she sent me a message and the issue appeared again

This week my mom texted my brother from a Galaxy 5 phone and my bro (Galaxy 4) received the chinese characters. Yesterday, I texted my friend from my iphone 6 plus and she received the chinese characters too. She uses an android phone. All of us are ATT users.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Génesis García-Santini 14/10/16 18:21
Problably is not a Nexus phone problem but an ATT sms error or something since my problem was with galaxys and random android phone.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Bill Selby 15/10/16 06:08
I too have been having this problem. When I look on my phone Moto X pure gen 2 using Chomp they are all asian characters. However, when I log into ATT and look at the messages on the web using messages.att.net the messages are in English. That said sometimes on ATT.net they are cut into shorter messages of 40-50 characters. It only happens sometimes. The same user can not usually resend that message or it does not come through so they will send me a screen shot. However, they can send other messages with emoji and and quotes and they are fine.

also when ATT sent me a pin to use att.net the pin was letters rather than numbers. My system converted xk to a emoji
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages James Dubberly 15/10/16 13:18
I have the same issue!
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages rickcr 15/10/16 19:23
great..it used to only occur from an iphone user, but now just received a Chinese text from my wife (att note 4.) I've obviously received hundreds of texts before from her with no issue so something recently has changed to cause this problem. No her phone hasn't had updates in a long time so I doubt it's on her end could be the update of my Nexus 6p possibly? Incredibly frustrating if this is going to keep happening
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Rita Courtwright 15/10/16 20:23
I realize I don't have a NEXUS phone, I have a Galaxy 6, but I'm also getting the same messages, but inly from iPhone users. See image. Hope you all can help find out what's wrong. It does get frustrating.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Dani Barcellona 15/10/16 21:08
Same problem happening to me with friends with iphones. I have a galaxy s7. It seems like it's only when they send emojis. Extremely annoying.
Ce message a été masqué, car il a été signalé comme étant abusif.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages rickcr 16/10/16 14:09
Good point about AT&T vs Phone. Is there anyone on this thread seeing it happen between non-ATT carriers?
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Shane55 16/10/16 14:29
I really don't know what it could be. We've got all kinds of phones reporting it and now it doesn't seem to even be just from iPhones. Even if it were, I've had two different people send the exact same text from the same version iPhone and from ATT. One did the Chinese error, the other didn't. The only difference I know is one had the newest iPhone update and one didn't. So I figured it was related to that... But now I don't know.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages rickcr 16/10/16 14:41
@Shane55... Definitely not related to the iPhone only since it just happened to me from my wife's Galaxy Note 4 (to my Nexus 6P) (both AT&T)
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages GemmaZ 16/10/16 15:58
Y'all, I'm having this same issue and I'm currently talking to Apple Support to see if they have a solution. Currently, the support member says their database has no solution. I'll update later if there's a fix.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Chrishw 16/10/16 16:19
Also having this issue. Only noticed it when long texts are combined with emoji in the same message. Only noticed it from iPhones all running OS10 but that is most of the people I text.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages GemmaZ 16/10/16 17:12
Just got off the phone with Apple Support. They said that it's not a security issue if it's only happening with one person. The solution they gave me was to delete the entire message history with the person you're having issues with and have them do the same. If that fails, I was told to contact my service provider and see if they were having any issues.

I just deleted my message history with the person I'm having the issue with and it seems like it's working so far.
Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Nicole Rogers 16/10/16 18:16
I have had this problem with 3 different people, all recently updated to the new iOS. It started Friday morning. One of them I have been texting all weekend with no problem, she updated her phone this morning and I immediately got the Chinese message. I have a Samsung Galaxy s7. At least one of the messages had an emoji in it as well.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages BBGun 16/10/16 21:11
Just piling on. This started around October 10. I'm having this issue with three people on iPhones. An iPhone 6, a 6 or 6S, and a 7. The 6 was my wife's. I can send a text to my Nexus 6P just fine. If it tack on 4 emojis, I get the Chinese characters.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Monica12 17/10/16 06:54
I am having this problem as well both from iphones and they are both on at&t as am I. This is annoying as hell. Anyone have a fix? Roll back our newest update?

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages patrickrrichards 17/10/16 08:05
Same here, I have a Nexus 6P and my wife has a Samsung Galaxy Active 5. Chinese characters started coincidentally around the time I updated my phone to 7.0.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages William Ishee 17/10/16 09:37
I just started having this problem today. I have a Galaxy s7 edge and my mother has an iPhone 6. Sometimes, I get that foreign language character text.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Ivan Kubacak 17/10/16 09:44
I am having the same issue. Girlfriend has an iPhone and I have an S6. This is the most recent message I've received.

I'm having the same issue - some texts show up as chinese symbols or unicode text - I have a Samsung s6 model G925f and person texting me has an iPhone
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Fallon Walker 17/10/16 10:46
I have noticed this since yesterday. I have a Nexus 6P on 7.0. However, unlike everyone else here, the friend who's text I received with the Chinese characters first is also on Android. She has an HTC phone, though I don't have the full details at the moment but I can get them later. Then again today I was texting my cousin and had the same issue. She is using an iPhone. Would providing the Chinese help?
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Dennis Dayman 17/10/16 11:01
FWIW, Wife who has a iPhone6 on AT&T and I who have a Oneplus 2 on AT&T are seeing the same thing from her when she's TXT's me. I can log into messages.att.net and see her TXT just fine, but on my OnePlus 2 using MightyTXT I keep seeing Chinese messages from her.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Shane55 17/10/16 11:03
@Fallon Others have had this issue between two Androids. If you are experiencing what the rest of us are then the Chinese will be nonsense characters, as it seems this is an encoding problem. Encoding the Chinese back into the correct format will result in the intended message, though.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Shane55 17/10/16 11:07
Another trend I'm picking up on is that most experiencing this issue seem to be having it with someone they most likely text very frequently, such as my gf and yet not others with the same phone that I don't text nearly as much. Many others on here also seem to be having this with their significant others.

Wish someone from Google or anywhere would pick this up. It's a hard issue to Google search, but I've tried and mostly come up with nothing helpful.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages raptor61 17/10/16 11:49
I am having the same problem. It started on Oct 13th for me. If i text my wife a message that is very long it comes through to her as Chinese. no emoji's involved just text. We have AT&T as a carrier.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Nancy Frank Cook 17/10/16 12:18
It's been happening to me, too. I have a galaxy5 and happens when iPhone users text me 4 lone texts with emoji's and they (& me) have att as their carrier. We need a fix. Has anyone contacted att yet?
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Katie Kotula 17/10/16 13:04
Same issue.. I have the Galaxy S5 and hubby has S6 and bff has S7.. I turned off my signature. not sure if that helped. Also, my iphone friends seem to get my messages just fine.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages rickcr 17/10/16 13:20
More and more people are piling on so just summarizing again what you'll glean by reading above:

1) The issue does not seem device specific in regard to the device sending the message. It's showing up on multitudes of android devices with messages being sent from BOTH iPhones and Android

2) It might be carrier specific. I have not yet heard anyone mention that they're seeing the issue on a carrier other than AT&T ? If someone is seeing this on a carrier or from a carrier other than AT&T please chime in.

3) Most seem to mention emojis were in the original message, but I can attest that a message I received did not have emojis in the original, so I do not believe that is the cause.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Fallon Walker 17/10/16 13:30
I am on Straight Talk but they use AT&T's network
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages WMELLIOTT 17/10/16 13:49
AT&T/Galaxy Note 3 here. Mine started 3 days ago from my GF who lives in Miami. Its just her texts that are coming in that way..and only the very first one of our conversation. Once we start rapid firing texts back and forth, I do not receive any Chinese characters.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Koren Taylor 17/10/16 14:32
Same here. My iPhone 6 texts to an iPhone 5 and an android are being received as Chinese symbols. Started today after sending and receiving photos, texts and emojis without problems.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Alejandro Ochoa 17/10/16 15:32
Same thing has been happening to me. This started for me on 10/13. My wife has an iPhone and I have a Nexus 6. It's not all of her messages, and I can't determine what triggers it. If she resend the exact same message it happens again. Other messages come through fine. Please me know if you come across a fix.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Alejandro Ochoa 17/10/16 15:32
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Alejandro Ochoa 17/10/16 15:34
Actually, now that I think about it, this started shortly after I installed the latest update from Android.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Alejandro Ochoa 17/10/16 15:34
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Meg.Coop 17/10/16 16:20
I talked to AT&T. Here's what I learned:
1- They say Apple has a security breach in iCloud, which is causing the iPhones to send Chinese characters.
2- It is a known issue with Google Nexus phones.
3- Samsung phones - open your built-in text message app > setting > more setting > text messages > input mode > choose automatic not unicode

I also talked to Google (which was a waste of time, imo, he didn't have any solution):
1- Google Nexus phone - open Messenger > settings > current country > United States
2- Google settings > language & input > make sure all setting are set to English/US
3- Messenger > Force Stop or Clear Cache or Clear Data (in that order)

So what I've gotten out of all of this is that Google, AT&T and Apple all know about the issue but no one has a solution.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Nicole Rogers 17/10/16 16:37
Thanks for looking into it, but I have a Samsung phone and that's what my settings already were in the first place.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages WMELLIOTT 17/10/16 16:39
Same for me as Ms Nicole said also..
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Charlie Snow 17/10/16 17:21
Meg, the iCloud issue is a whole different thing. Hackers are accessing people's iCloud accounts who have weak passwords and spamming in chinese. friends/family will get crazy messages that you did not send. what we are experiencing is totally different. we send a text and it ends up in chinese characters. it happened to me today again, sent my wife a text and it came in chinese, i used an apostrophe, i removed that, sent again and the text came normal.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Meg.Coop 17/10/16 18:11
Oh, I figured everyone's settings are correct. The info above is what I got from AT&T and Google regarding incoming text messages being displayed in Chinese characters. Someone else is more than welcome to try their luck! 🤗
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Bill Selby 17/10/16 18:15
I ran a test with my wife today (iphone ios 10 up to date no betas) to my Moto X ( marshmallow android) on ATT when she sends me a long text with an emoji I get the characters. If she deletes the emoji I can get the same text. If she tries again to add 3 or 4 emojis it will be characters.

To me the fix seems to be no emoji.

I suspect ATT If they know about it they will fix it. I hope

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages AndjO 17/10/16 20:01
I concur .. I'm on Android on at&t . getting the characters from 3 iPhone users who send long texts with Emoji..
I'm guessing it has something to do with iOS 10 iMessage converting messages to SMS
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Kaytlynn Vaquez 17/10/16 20:11
I'm having this issue, I have a galaxy s5 and he has a iPhone 6s.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Alejandro Ochoa 17/10/16 20:17
I just talked to AT&T. They are aware of the issue, but don't know what it is causing it at this time. They have been aware of it for a few days and do not know if it is something in their systems, or Android or Apple's software. They added me to the master ticket for the issue and said they would notify me of any updates once they have a resolution.

You may want to call AT&T to add yourself to the master ticket and to give them more information on your experience.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Jeremy Chasey 17/10/16 20:50
Same issue described above. I have a nexus 6p, wife has an iPhone 6s Plus. Here are some examples of Chinese texts I've received but notice that they accompany emjois.

I have a Moto G4 Plus and I'm having g the same issue as everyone else. Also on ATT and texts coming from an iPhone are coming through in random assortments of Chinese characters.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Christopher Fitero 18/10/16 03:07
Just wanted to put it out there that its happening with Android to Android devices as well. I have a HTC one m8 and my gf has a galaxy note 5. She gets the Chinese characters when I send her long texts with emojis, but when I send her the same text without emojis, it sends as is.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Michael Bear 18/10/16 04:52
I to have been having problems with the Galaxy S5 Active AT&T ever since the new Android upgrade
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Robyn Emory 18/10/16 05:44
I'm also having this issue with my Nexus 6P and by brother-in-law's iPhone

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages pbzeppelin 18/10/16 09:53
Adding myself on here so I can follow the thread. Happening to me since this past week: AT&T on Nexus 5X Nougat to two different iPhones. Neither were using emojis but both had punctuation, which it looks like throw the encoding off from what other users are mentioning. When punctuation is removed the messages comes through fine.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Angie Peebles 18/10/16 10:06
My husband is having the same issue--just started receiving them from one particular friend a couple of nights ago. The messages were "normal" (in English), and then the longer ones turned into Chinese-looking characters. When I Googled a translation, it detects Chinese, but nothing that is translatable. He has a Samsung 3G with AT&T as his carrier. I'm not certain, but I think his friend has a newer iPhone. He told me today that his buddy at work started getting messages like this as well, and asked me to follow-up with a tech-savvy friend. :-)
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Rons Tenants 18/10/16 10:14
my iphone recently started sending random Chinese text messages in place of my English text messages - first known date was 10/12 (since the person receiving the message has to report it, there's no way for me know otherwise). It is an intermittent problem - and most annoying!
Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Kraziness 313 18/10/16 10:36
This has been happening to me also i have a samsung galaxy prime and my daughter has a iphone 6s the rose goldish colored one anyway i have gotten several messages from her all in the exact same kind of japaneese or chineese letters not sure why
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Charles Ryan 18/10/16 10:43
Same thing here. I am on a Nexus 6, wife is on an iPhone 7. Just started getting these type messages today. Both of us are on AT&T network.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages RichardXP 18/10/16 11:13
Same problem. Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge all 3 of the sending phones were iPhone 7 on AT&T. Most envolved emoji 1 did not.
Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages cackleberry2112 18/10/16 11:36
Same problem here, iPhone 7 to my Nexus 5X.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Ethan Riojas 18/10/16 11:39
I have an identical issue with a Nexus 6P on AT&T.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Bryan Kemp 18/10/16 11:53
My friend is also having the issue. She can send long messages with emojis but cannot receive long messages with emojis. I received her text just fine. We are both on at&t and she has an s6 and I have an s7.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Diane1018 18/10/16 11:58
Same issue here from 2 different senders. Have iphone 5, rec'd from either iphone 6 or 7. No emojis in one, not sure about the other. The one without emojis said he got a message that he had to resend it as text because the other did not go through. 2 short messages came through fine, the one in the middle was Chinese
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages danmtz 18/10/16 12:06
Moto X (2nd Gen) here and I'm having the same issues when receiving from iPhones. Started Sunday and again just now.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages amonneyyyyy 18/10/16 13:22
I have a Galaxy s7 edge as does my boyfriend. I was using Mood as a 3rd party texting app when it first happened, he said he got chinese characters so I got another 3rd party texting app (Textra) cause I thought it was the other app and it STILL happened. It seems to happen if I add a few emojis to the text which is frustrating! Hope they figure out a solution, I love my 3rd party text apps! I also am an AT&T user
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages sdt555 18/10/16 15:53
I have a OnePlus 3 and am seeing the Chinese characters from my wife and MIL, both using iPhone 6. We're all on AT&T.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Mickey Deagle 18/10/16 16:00
Also experiencing this issue. So far, only from iPhone users (iOS 10, iMessage) to my phone (Android 7, Android Messenger). We're all on AT&T as well.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages TheLadyFair 18/10/16 16:25
I also have had this issue. I'm adding myself on here to follow this thread as well. It started happening after I updated my iPhone to iOS 10. I turned off MMS messaging when texting those people which seems to be an easy fix for now. But it's really annoying to have to turn it off and on when I want to text my friends with an iPhone and use the new messaging features. I hope AT&T fixes this issue soon.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Mickey Deagle 18/10/16 16:26
I just chatted with AT&T and they acknowledged the problem and were familiar with it. They made no attempt to blame it on a device or operating system, which was refreshing. I'll post back here when they update my case.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages zantilley 18/10/16 16:34
I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 and just in the last few days have randomly been receiving text messages from my Girlfriend, who has an iPhone6, in Chinese, both of us are on At&t. She works with someone who recently got a Galaxy S7 and is having the same issue. The common thread seems to be messages originating on an iPhone, received on an Android phone with one or both being on the at&t network.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Debbie Segale 18/10/16 18:30
I'm having the same issue. I ha e the Moto g4plus and my issues cone from two iPhone 6 users.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages trebuchet5684 18/10/16 19:08
I am having the same thing happen as of last week. Iphone 6 messages to my galaxy 5. Only random ones come in as characters. Not especially long texts but with apostrophes and emoticons.
They have to send me screenshots so I can see real conversation.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Brooke Weckwarth 18/10/16 19:58

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Jim Frisina 18/10/16 20:45
I have been experiencing the same issue, but I have noticed that it only occurs with texts that are more than 3 lines long and have an emoji attached?

Ok, try this change your Enhanced LTE settings to data only on your iphone and I think you'll find everything is ok.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages R Dub 18/10/16 23:19
Im voting for it being an AT&T issue... Have received it a few times from both android (LG G4) and iPhone... I am running on an LG G3. Common traits...

- Long Text
- Emoji
- AT&T

Started on 10/14/16 ....

FIGURE IT OUT AT&T!
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Debbie Shoyket 19/10/16 06:01
Hello,
My friend and I have had this happening as well, beginning on Oct 14. Prior to that, no Chinese in texts.
We both have Samsung S5's and we both use AT&T.
She can receive a one-sentence text from me in English OK. My larger texts she receives in Chinese.
She has checked her phone's language setting and it's English.
She receives texts from her other contacts OK; it's only from me and one other contact where she receives Chinese texts.
I can receive texts from her OK.

I am also having this issue.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Candance Hendricks 19/10/16 08:49
I have a One Plus 3 and the people I have had issue with have iPhones with the update. The emoji thing, i thought was the issue. But a friend this morning tested that and it was not the emoji. She deleted it altogether and it still sent characters 😥
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Lucy Msall 19/10/16 09:56
Same thing happening here, Nexus 5s, started last week, I think the people I'm receiving them from are iphone-users so might be an imessage thing. But I had no problem prior to last week! Agh/
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Candance Hendricks 19/10/16 10:10
So frustrating! I wasn't having this issue until the iOS update rolled out. Had a friend who messaged me one day and things were fine... The next day, after she updated, things went bizarre. *Sigh* I hate asking people to "send me a screenshot of what you sent" but it's the only thing that is working for now (even though it's after the fact 😥)
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages DRodgers 19/10/16 10:32
Ask the sender to resend without any emotes and that'll solve the issue. Trending issue and a fix should be in the works.

I just thought I would add that I just got a brand new Samsung S7 and it's happening to me too. I have received Chinese texts from at least two different people both that both have iPhones.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Auchindoun 19/10/16 10:43
Also happening here. I have an iPhone 7 and am on the 10.1 beta. It hasn't happened since I upgraded to my 7 and only happens when I use Handoff from my computer sending texts to people with Android. Looks like it's an encoding issue on my end from my Mac but I do not know how to fix it. Downloading 10.1 Beta 4 right now so hopefully they included a fix in it.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Debra Frauman 19/10/16 10:55
I have the galaxy s6 and starting Friday 10/14 the same thing as happened to me. The other people I texted have all different phones from iphone to lg to galaxy is there any solution to this problem.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Charlie Snow 19/10/16 11:03
DRodgers, it's more than just emojis, its punctuation and sometimes length of text.

Came across this article today. Might be affecting your friend's iPhone. http://mashable.com/2016/10/19/apple-imessage-hack/#myiyhbs7fiqN

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Lucy Msall 19/10/16 11:21
It's not the same as the Apple Chinese hack. The link you posted talks about people getting actual Chinese texts, from unknown numbers. The problem people are discussing here involves receiving (nonsense) Chinese characters from a known friend during an ongoing conversation, because the code translation somehow gets screwed up in the presence of emojis/punctuation/long texts.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Charlie Snow 19/10/16 11:21
not sure if some one posted this link but here is one going on at att: https://forums.att.com/t5/Windows-Phone/messages-arriving-on-Chinese-characters/m-p/4953003

+1.

Galaxy Note 5, updated to 6.0.1.

My friend has an iPhone 6s, and I'm not sure of the OS but he's a tech person, so I'm positive he's got it updated to the most recent OS. First Chinese message was October 10th around 3:30pm. One emoji at the end of a relatively short message. I have only received it from him, and he hasn't gotten any Chinese from me. This has happened maybe 3-4 times since the tenth, but we don't text too often. I have also gotten other texts with emojis from him just fine.

My boyfriend has an iPhone 5s, and I think he's OS 9...He has not updated to the newest. I sent him a long text with 5 or 6 emojis in the middle and he received it with no issues. Waiting for him to try sending a long one back, but if I don't post again, then it showed up fine.

All three of us are on ATT.

I checked my language settings and updated the English settings. English is the only thing marked. I also only get it from my friend with the iPhone 6s so far. I did a malware and virus scan too and checked for a system update last night.

Very weird bug!

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages rickcr 19/10/16 11:53
Since people aren't able to read all the messages here.. every so often I'll send out an update:

1) It's not an emjoi issue. Reports (including mine) have come in with the problem showing up without emojis
2) It's not an iPhone issue. Happens on two androids as well.
3) It does appear to be an AT&T issue and they actually are aware of it, but (as of a few days ago) they don't know the cause yet. The recommended thing to do is to call AT&T let them know you're experiencing the issue. The more people that report it, the better.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Jim Frisina 19/10/16 11:54
I spoke with AT&T engineering Dept today they are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it, but unfortunately they do not have an estimated date for resolution.

The only suggestion I can offer is if you are on an iPhone and running ios 10 try turning off your LTE HD Voice and just use LTE Data. It does impact the quality of your voice calls but it should resolve your text issues, though the possibility exists that it won't help at all, but there's no way of knowing if you don't try?
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Jim Frisina 19/10/16 12:00
That's definitely interesting, we have 4 android and 5 ios devices and I have only been able to replicate it when I text from iPhone to android?
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Charlie Snow 19/10/16 12:39
read that someone installed the iOS 10.0.3 beta and the problem is still there. that reinforces the idea that its ATT rather than OS or device related.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages jakymiwm 19/10/16 12:44
Having the same problem. Android receiving a text from iPhone.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Candance Hendricks 19/10/16 12:45
Yes! I would think it is AT&T as well.. my husband has an iPhone under CSpire and I am Android and haven't gotten any character messages from him.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Arsh Singh2 19/10/16 12:45
So, I wanted to test something, and this seems to be at least part of the problem.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Jim Frisina 19/10/16 12:47
You're correct it is an network issue, I'm running IOS 10.1 and the issue is still there.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages spursfan2 19/10/16 14:29
i have talked to at&t twice. as usual they have been as helpful as ice cubes on the north pole. they have told me its a widespread problem & they are aware of it.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Lauren McW 19/10/16 14:49

Carrier for both phones: AT&T

Phone #1 sends texts that transform to Chinese characters: Lumia 950 Windows phone

Phone #2 receives texts in Chinese but doesn't send them: Amazon Fire

On phone #1, the texts are seen normally...English, emojis or not, etc. I've been sent screenshots showing what I should have received.

I had to copy/paste the Chinese version into an email and send it so the OP could see what I've been receiving.

It does seem to happen more often with longer texts, but adding emoticons almost ensures it happening.

Re: An earlier post I made.

My boyfriend with an iPhone 6 (not a 5s like I said earlier) and an older iOS did a test with my Galaxy Note 5.

Long text 70+ with emoji is Chinese
Long text 70+ no emoji is English
Short text under or equal to 70 with or without emoji is English

Not sure if this is an Android to Android problem too because I don't have friends with Android systems. But it is definitely for me an iPhone to Android issue, and not an Android to iPhone issue.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Jennifer Pak 19/10/16 16:26
I have this issue as well - I'm using a Nexus 5X Android 7.0 and my friend is using an iPhone 6 with the latest version of iOS. When he sends me messages I receive the same string of odd Chinese characters as posted above, though on his phone it is a text message in English. It happens once every few messages, usually with an emoji.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Eric Hannah 19/10/16 17:27
Here's an interesting addition for you. This happened to me with a friend who uses an iPhone the majority of the time however she puts her sim inside her old s6 edge from time to time in order to stream to her chrome cast. I had this same issue when she had switched from her iPhone and sent me several texts from her s6 edge. We both use att and I'm on a note 7
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Bennett James 19/10/16 20:49
I have the same problem with my phone (I have a OP2) (The phone that sends the texts is a IPhone) I will receive longer text with emojis in random Chinese symbols.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Albert Yin 19/10/16 20:59
Hey all! Talked with AT&T and they are definitely on it working with apple and google. They will push a carrier setting change if needed. For now they suggested a setting change for ANDROIDS and this has seemed to work for me and my gf.

On Android:
1. Go to settings
2. Go to message settings
3. Find "input settings" and change to "GSM" instead of "Auto"

Let me know if this works for you guys!

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Alzek654 19/10/16 21:03
Is there a way to translate it? Like copy paste and the actual text appears?
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Bennett James 19/10/16 21:06
I can't seem to find those settings.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Bennett James 19/10/16 21:08
It doesn't seem to translate.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Albert Yin 19/10/16 21:14
Try looking for text message settings or messaging. I don't have an android in front of me so I can't tell you exactly where the settings are.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Bennett James 19/10/16 21:26
I can't seem to find it anywhere in any of my settings.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages 49er Cab 19/10/16 22:30
Can't find that anywhere in my settings.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Johnny Skoale 20/10/16 07:52

Long messages from friends and family are arriving at my phone in Chinese characters. Short msgs from the same people are ok. All phone settings are in English. Any ideas?

this has been happening to me.. my daughter just told me (she works for verizon) to uninstall the emoji app..i'm going to try it right now ..then see what happens.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Angela Ledington-Fischer 20/10/16 11:32
okay there is no emoji app... so as we have read it looks like it's something with ATT????

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Angela Ledington-Fischer 20/10/16 11:46
I found it.. you have to go to your text messages then tap settings then tap more settings then text and there it is...
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages kam31uf 20/10/16 12:25
Same issue. I have a one plus 3 on ATT. In talking to ATT now they think a fix will be in on Monday 10/24. The workaround she gave was nice, except I do not use the default messages app. I use messenger.
here is the workaround she provided for the rest of you - android chinese characters Messages > More > Setting > More Settings > Text Messages > Input mode Set for either Automatic or GSM to fix Chinese character issues.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages ardentlyenthused 20/10/16 14:33
This is a character encoding issue that currently seems specific to AT&T. I recently wrote a detailed tech post about the issue, what's causing it, and how you can fix it. Read it here:

Note: I tend to write in a humorous, informative style because tech-talk can get way too dry and boring. Enjoy the fix! Hope you find it helpful.

Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages ardentlyenthused 20/10/16 15:41
What I talk about in my blog post is THE crux of the issue. That extra binary 1 is what is messing everything up, and it's what AT&T is going to end up fixing.

Yes, there is a way to translate it. There are step by step instructions in this tech blog post.

Just want to add that I am getting the same issue..but from a user who is using Windows Phone 10. Also get it from user on iPhone. I am also AT&T person. New to the Nexus 6P so not sure when it started.
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages Shane55 20/10/16 16:49
Everyone: Please stop posting. This is an acknowledged issue by ATT. It is not your phone, it is not your friend's or significant other's phone. It is ATT, and they know, and they are working on it.

I can't get my email to unsubscribe from this thread and it's driving me insane lol 😂
Re: Randomly Receiving Chinese Messages ST5150 20/10/16 16:52
LOL!!!
