Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Sagi Quarion 11/5/13 10:26 AM
Notice:  If you're rooted, you can manually adjust the Mic volume, or download this patch:  https://productforums.google.com/d/msg/nexus/dOaR3XxCmxo/Jn5DHkzjAAgJ (Please up-vote this answer in hopes that google with patch this into the next release.  I feel safe in saying it's not fixed because of the remaining N4/N5 users having this issue.  Try the patch and let us know what happens.

Hello!

Just got my N5 and noticed the input gain on my headset is awfully low, if not inaudible.  Nobody could hear me clearly, some could barely hear me and yet others heard nothing.  The same headset-mic works fine (calls and audio recordings are loud and clear) on my Galaxy S2 and S4.  Otherwise, the N5 is fine.  Do I need to RMA?  Is anybody else having the same issue with their headset-mics?

Reference my other post here.  I've made multiple posts in hopes of getting this issue more attention.  I've tried other headsets; the nexus 5 has low input gain on all of them.

*UPDATE:*  I've (reluctantly) returned my Nexus 5.  This is only the first week (actually a bit less than that) of the N5 being out in the public and reports of this issue are starting to accumulate.  Please, Google, acknowledge the issue and offer a real solution.  The prevalence of the issue on multiple devices (even after some have exchanged them) is proof we need a more effective solution.

Google+ posting to help with search.

IF you are having this issue, please reply and up-vote this ticket.  It would also help if you included a response in my XDA Thread Here.

*UPDATE:*  I spoke with another GP support person (Hi, Brandi!) and she escalated my issue to a specialist.  I sent her a link to this post hoping the specialist will pop in here or work with me over email.  I'll keep updating.
**UPDATE** Haven't heard from the specialist yet, but google said the issue qualifies for warranty return and exchange.  For now, getting a decent bluetooth headset may be the only way "around"  the low input gain issue. Sigh nuggets.  I'll update if I hear from the specialist and report the status of my new N5.
***UPDATE***  Received the new N5 today.  It has the same issue.  I can confirm that holding the center button down on my pair of earbuds seems to correct the gain to appropriate levels.  On my other set, I had to toggle the mute switch to achieve the same effect.  In call volume seems to be normal on skype, grooveIP, and the native android calling app.  Note:  I cannot just plug in any old headset and expect it to work as intended.  For now, I have to hold in the play/pause button on my main earbuds and toggle the mute switch on my home headphones for skype and such.  I'm going to give the phone a fair chance over the next week and will update.

****FINAL UPDATE****  WTF, google, seriously.  Holding the play/pause button on my headset (and connecting my other set with the mic muted) seems to correct the low input volume issue -- it doesn't.  It merely enables a sort of "speaker phone mode" that where the audio is being inputted from the phone's mic, not the inline mic.  Test it yourself.  When you connected an inline mic as you normally would (not pressing the buttons), the nexus 5 switches to the inline mic input and it sounds too low to be functional.  Disconnect the same headset and connect it while holding the button and you'll find it sounds much better.  Tap on the phone, put your mouth right next to the phones mic, then listen to your recording.  You'll see what I mean.   The better sounding audio isn't coming from the inline mic, it's coming from the mic built into the nexus 5 because it thinks you've connected earbuds with no inline mic. The nexus 5 (much like the N4) has a glitch with most inline mics.  I'm done testing.  Sending it back this week and requesting a full refund.  I talk on skype and GrooveIP far too much to tolerate.  such a pity.  Perhaps I'll try again next year when there has been a patch or two out.  Maybe a developer can find a fix.  Good job LG and Google, you've created a phone that is perfect for folks who don't use earbuds or headphones with inline mics.  I guess we'll just have to stick with samsung phones or get a moto X.  Geeez.
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone MattPneumatic 11/5/13 10:56 AM
Hi, I'm having the same issue on my new Nexus 5.  The headset mic (from a YurBuds headset mic) is very low in its output.  The same headset works well with my Samsung Galaxy S3.  Maybe a software issue?
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone Paul 11/5/13 11:13 AM
Can you go to Settings > Sound > Volume and make sure everything's turned up there?

If it is, try starting your device in safe mode (instructions and info here) to test if any app you've installed is causing the problem. If you don't experience the problem while in safe mode that's a good indication that an app you've installed is the source of your issue.
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone MattPneumatic 11/5/13 11:44 AM
Thanks for the suggestion Paul.  I checked the volume settings and they are maxed out.  The issue seems to be on input though (not output from the phone).

I recorded some audio into the Keep app with the following test:

Safe Mode
- Headset mic (volume was low)
- phone mic (volume seems fine)

Non-Safe Mode
- Headset mic (volume was low)
- phone mic (volume seems fine)

So, it seems like the issue is able to be replicated in Safe Mode as well as not.  Any other suggestions?  Thanks!
Matt
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone Paul 11/5/13 3:25 PM
Do you have another headset/mic you can experiment with? I know you said your current one works on other phones, I'm just trying to eliminate the possibility that it's the specific combination of your phone with that headset.
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone Sagi Quarion 11/5/13 3:41 PM
Paul,

Thanks for taking the time to help, much appreciated!  I did more testing as well.  Similar tests but with multiple inline mics and various apps.  Results are all the same.  The N5 handset mic is just fine (albeit a lower quality than the S3) and all audio recorded with inline mics is significantly quieter.  Based on my testing with a couple of audio level apps, I would say the inline mic gain is at least -3.  I have to jack the gain on ASR to 2-3x gain just to be heard reasonably.  Callers can't hear me very well, if at all, unless I use the handset.  No ear buds, head phones nor any other inline recording device is producing functionally sufficient positive gain.  I don't know if this is a software or hardware issue.

I do know that it doesn't matter if I'm in safe mode, or using grooveIP, or the native dialer on a cell call, nor any other app.  I think this is an issue Google needs verify (which they could easily do) and recognize as a hardware or software fault.  People need to know what they are buying and have confidence that Google will own up to the issue if they can verify it.
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone Mike Larwood 11/5/13 10:51 PM
I'm also seeing this, tried a few headsets and they all worked fine in my old Galaxy Nexus, now using the headsets calls are barely manageable due to the low volume.

I'm assuming this isn't an obvious setting - I really could do with this fixing!
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone MattPneumatic 11/6/13 9:49 AM
Hi Paul, thanks again for keeping up with this topic.  I ran a few different tests with the Noise Meter app on my Nexus 5 to capture what is happening visually when I use the on-phone mic vs. the headset mic.  Please take a look at the attached PDF of the following headsets that I tested.  Let me know if you have any feedback or further questions.  Thanks!  -Matt
  • Samsung Galaxy S3 headset
  • HTC EVO 4G headset
  • Yurbuds Focus Talk headset

I'm also having the same issue. I'm using my old GNexus' headset and the mic volume of my Nexus 5 is too low (they work perfectly on the old device).
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone Francesco Pulcini 11/7/13 3:38 PM
that's awful... the same issue is affecting nexus 4!! I checked with noise meter and the results are exactly the same Matt posted. I think I will ask for an RMA google even if I know that it will be too difficult to get a proper working device...but the fact is if RMA number increases they should point out this issue
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone S P K 11/7/13 3:53 PM
I can confirm I'm having this issue as well. I tested several headsets from Samsung, Apple, and RHA and got low input levels on all of them. They work fine on my other devices. The built-in mic level on my Nexus 5 is fine.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Francesco Pulcini 11/7/13 4:30 PM
please Sagi tell the specialist that the same issue is present on Nexus 4. You can direct him to those conversations:

The fix should be the same for both the devices
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! John0713 11/7/13 8:11 PM
I am having the same issue with Dre Tour earphone. Also, not trying to hijack and not sure if these two are related,  but I had this happen couple times where a person on the other side of the call can't even hear anything I say regardless of if I am using the mic on phone or the mic on earphone...  Hope this doesn't mean I got a defective unit.

same problem for me. The volume level is incredibly low. Absolutely pathetic
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Chow Mann 11/9/13 2:35 PM
Same issue with me. The sound is just crap imho. I tried various headphones and tried increasing the gain with Power Amp and it still sounds terrible. If google doesn't issue a fix soon it is going to be returned!
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! jared Rooprai 11/9/13 3:18 PM
Im having the exact same issue, what i would like to know, is this a problem with all nexus 5 devices... or is it just some. Maybe most people do not use the mic on their headsets so they don't notice? Also is this a software problem or a hardware problem?? idk if i should RMA :(
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Peter Giz 11/9/13 3:21 PM
Same issue with my N5. I'm using the Philips SHA9005A headset and people complain about they can not hear me. No problems with this headset with my galaxy nexus.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! sierratango88 11/9/13 5:03 PM
This issue has plagued both my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. From the looks of it, this is a widespread issue affecting all models and cannot be resolved by a simple RMA replacement, as proven by my last Nexus 4.

@Paul, please help us by escalating this issue to the respective engineering department.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! JerryLLL 11/9/13 11:57 PM
I have the same issue. The phone's mic volume level is fine when I don't plug in headphones, but is abysmally low when I plug in headphones (and I'm still using the phone's mic in both cases).

Fix please!

Same here, using the headset from my Galaxy Nexus.
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone ukusic 11/10/13 11:48 AM
This i a known issue on Nexus 4 too but so far it has been ignored by Google!
Tried 5 different vendor headsets, the microphone is very low. Tried the above(safe mode etc) and then some. Please this must be fixed. This is hurting Google, the Nexus brand and LG big time!
The microphone volume works excellent when not using headset.

Paul please escalate this! RMA is not the answer!
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone Objekt 11/10/13 1:53 PM
I hate to be Mr. Wet Towel here, but I bought an earbud set with mic today, and it seems to be working fine.

I bought the Yurbuds Ironman Inspire with Mic set.  Tested them by calling a buddy on his iPhone 5.  He said I sounded just fine - clear and plenty of volume.

He, on the other hand, was VERY hard to understand.  His voice was heavily distorted, as if the sound was being highly compressed or he was talking through a wall.  This isn't a problem I've had before, so I'm not sure whether it's the Nexus 5 or the earbuds.  I've used both the phone's built-in speaker, and a pair of JVC earbuds (no mic, just earbuds) to make calls on the Nexus 5 before with no issues.  So, I suspect it's the new earbuds at fault, although music sounds absolutely fine through them.  Odd, that.
Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Nikita Geller 11/10/13 3:29 PM
I'm experiencing the same issue with my N5. All the people I'm talking to with an inline mic are claiming about poor sound quality
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Chow Mann 11/10/13 4:33 PM
Something is definitely odd with my N5. I have Power Amp installed and when i use one set of headphones the equalizer and other features do not work. When i use my other pair the features work again. Of course it you can't turn up the volume up much before it sounds terrible. I never had this issue with my N4!

Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone MattPneumatic 11/11/13 6:38 AM
Dear Objekt, This is interesting that the headset mic seems to be working fine with your Nexus 5.  It looks like you have a unicorn phone!  In your future use of the phone, please let us know if anything comes up because you seem to be the first (and only) person on this forum to say that your phone is functioning fine.

Thanks for your time and insight!
Matt
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone Sagi Quarion 11/11/13 6:50 AM
Thanks for the info, Objekt.  Would you mind posting the model number of the earbuds that worked on your N5?  If possible, please test with one or two other pairs of earbuds with inline mics.  If they all work for you, then I'll accept google's proclamation that it's a warranty issue.  Even so, that would mean a decent percentage of the "first wave" devices are having issues.
Re: N5: Low Volume with Headset Microphone Objekt 11/11/13 7:23 AM
My new earbuds are the Yurbuds "Inspire Talk Sport," (taken directly from the Yurbuds website, also listed as "Yurbuds Ironman Inspire Talk" on Amazon.com.  They are black with an Ironman logo on each bud.

I have now tried them by calling two friends.

One, on an iPhone on the AT&T network, sounded terrible (like he was talking through a wall) but said my volume and clarity were just fine.

The other one is on Sprint but I'm not sure what phone he uses. Not only did he say I sounded fine, I could hear him very well too.

The only other earbuds I have are JVC without a mic, so I can't try anything else, sorry.

I ordered my Nexus 5 in the early afternoon of launch day and received it last Tuesday, FWIW.

Same here. I use the earphone from apple and I am pretty sure it works just fine on any devices other than N5. Hope google can fix this bug asap.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! krmarko 11/11/13 3:39 PM
Same problem here. I've opened a ticket as well. Google wanted to replace the phone, but it's not a hardware problem since other apps like Smart Voice Recorder  (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andrwq.recorder&hl=en), which have settings to adjust the mic gain can produce very loud recordings.

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! krmarko 11/11/13 4:01 PM
Found this trick on another board. It seems to help for one of my headsets with an inline mic.

"Hold down the center button on the headphone while you plug it into the phone."

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Chow Mann 11/11/13 5:47 PM
Weirdest shit i have seen > i have two ear bud type earphones from the same company . Both have inline mic. One has a volume control . When i plug the one with a volume control in the sound is terrible and the equalizer and settings don't work. With the other ear buds these things work once again . The sound is still not fantastic but at least i can listen to it. It has to be a software bug/

I spoke to Google and he said this is the first he has heard about a speaker or sound issue. I asked if a update was coming . He said he hasn't heard anything.

He told to do a factory reset and that will fix the problem. I really don't think that is a fix?
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! S P K 11/11/13 5:53 PM
I just tried krmarko's suggestion and it worked with one of my headsets as well. I held down the center button on a headset with inline mic and volume control for iPhone/iPod as I inserted it into the jack. Once it was in, I let go, opened up a voice recorder and tried it. Levels seem to improve.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Chow Mann 11/11/13 6:40 PM
Worked for me also. Better at least than before!
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Kurt Marko 11/11/13 10:50 PM
Glad it helped. After playing around with the Smart Voice Recorder app, I am pretty sure the problem is with the phone's automatic gain control software. That app lets you override the AGC and recalibrate the mic gain. Doing so produces recordings of excellent quality.

Please Google, fix this ASAP.

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Peter Giz 11/12/13 12:10 AM
Holding the button while plugging in the headset worked for me, too. The noise meter app shows afterwards the same level like without headset. So I hope this can be fixed by an update.
I would appreciate it if Google would drop a comment related to this issue.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! MattPneumatic 11/12/13 6:04 AM
Thanks for the insight Kurt!  Looks like you've discovered something.  While pressing the 'one-button style' mic button on my YurBuds Focus Talk headphones, the low volume issue is resolved (which I verified in Smart Voice Recorder app). My guess is that by pressing the mic button, you are shorting out the ground on the TRRS connector which is having some resulting effect.  However, by pressing the inline mic button while inserting the headphones, this deactivates the functionality of the button with any apps (you cannot pause music).  Certainly not a fix, but a workaround.

I've also found some information on Android user sites talking about the differences in TRS vs TRRS (normal) vs TRRS (apple) connectors which may allude to the fact that this could be a wiring related symptom.

Explanation of the headphone wiring:

And also, a dev was having some issues writing their app:

Hope that helps!  You all have been really sleuths on this!

I'm using v-moda headsets - three different versions - and it seems to be fine. I recorded 3 voice mails and all of them sounded as good as with the microphone. I also have a Nexus 4 and have not had any issue with this brand of headphones.

Same here, the mic volume is very very low and the "middle button" workaround has not worked for Apple EarPods, in fact it made it worse! I will try other headsets once I get hold of them and will update...

Please fix if it's a software glitch!

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Chow Mann 11/12/13 1:56 PM
Just read the latest review of N5 on Geek

The single speaker on the Nexus 5 isn’t particularly loud, and the audio you get from it is confusing at best. Spoken word seems to come out muddy and distorted, and it almost feels like there’s sound issues with the phone — sometimes it feels like the audio is coming from the back of the phone, instead of the bottom. When you hold the N5 you can feel the vibrations in the back even though the speaker is clearly positioned to push audio out of the bottom. Some apps sound better than others, even when playing the exact same song. It’s an inconsistent experience, with the high end of the spectrum being OK and the low end being downright unusable.

It’s not just the audio coming out of the speakers, either. Audio pushed over Bluetooth seems to suffer from the same fate. Spoken word, such as voice responses from Google Now, are overly quiet and distorted. Grabbing audio from a voicemail is crystal clear and exactly what you’d expect. Calls through Google Glass are of a generally lower quality than what I normally get from theHTC One or Moto X on Bluetooth 4 LE. The entire audio experience feels like it wasn’t quite finished, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see an update in the future to address this.

That cuts it folks!

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Sagi Quarion 11/12/13 2:05 PM
Somebody from Google, seriously, needs to address the issue.  No answer results in an assumption that google is aware of the issue and chooses to do nothing about it -- perception being that most of the user base will "tolerate" the problem because it's a nexus phone.  I'd like to see the rate of return on this device.

Paul (or anybody @Google that sees this), please acknowledge the issue.  It's not hard to verify.

I think we need to take this over to G+ where there might actually be some Googlers lurking. I doubt there are many over here.

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! jared Rooprai 11/12/13 4:28 PM
So have we come to the conclusion that this is a problem with all Nexus 5 devices? I will be getting a replacement phone due to a dead pixel and some motor issues, I was hoping that it might fix this low gain issue also.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Sagi Quarion 11/12/13 4:47 PM
I updated the post with some brief findings on my new N5.  I made triple-damn sure that holding the center play/pause button on my primary earbuds fixes the low gain issue.  From a technical perspective, I don't understand what's happening yet.  Still testing.  As of right now, I dunno if this is a hardware or software problem.  Clearly, the hardware is recording audio just fine.  I need to do more research on the type of audio port the N5 is equipped with vs the type of earbuds I'm using.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! krmarko 11/12/13 4:56 PM
The N5 hardware is perfectly capable of making great recordings. Take the Smart Voice Recorder app (or any similar), disable automatic gain control, recalibrate your headset and record away. The result is loud and clear. I get similar results from an LG bluetooth headset with AGC enabled. So the main flaw (there could be more than one) is how the software is handling input through the headphone port.

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! JB NGM 11/12/13 5:31 PM
This is my email to Google re the Nexus 5

Dear Google,

I ordered (and received) two Nexus 5 devices... I'M TERRIBLY DISAPPOINTED about 3 aspects of the devices and I hope / I'm lead to believe the is a defect in the hardware / software.

Issue #1:
The camera is pathetically bad... worse than my original iPhone 4 from 3 years ago.  The autofocus is dismally slow, , picture quality is marginal at best, and the camera is basically non-functional in low light situations.

Issue #2:
The output volume is so low I literally can not hear it... e.g. when using the Google native maps app. I literally can barely hear the driving directions.  In fact, the volume is so low this is reason enough to return the devices / contest a refund based on what seems to be a hardware defect.

Issue #3:
The battery life is worse than phones I owned years ago... I have to charge the device multiple times per day.

In conclusion, I am extremely upset I trusted in Google and waited months on end hoping for a great Nexus device.

Please contact me to address these problems.

Jeff

I am having the same low volume output. I am using my iphone 5 headsets, the volume at max is only 60% of the volume I got before. Moreover, the controls to cancel or pickup a call and increase and decreasing volume is not working!!!
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Wes Allen 11/12/13 7:30 PM
Im having the same problem, 3 sets of headphones (2 apple earbuds and 1 offbrand set). Besides people mot being able to hear me very well, I have to scream "OK GOOGLE" to get to the voice prompt. On my N4 when I started google now i used a normal talking voice to say "OK GOOGLE" and it responded just fine.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Uba_ 11/13/13 5:33 AM
Ok, I got hold of 2 sets of non-Apple headsets and the results are the same, where basically the microphone input volume is very very low.

I tried one set of Samsung Headphones, sorry I don't know the model number, but I think they are the ones that were shipped with Galaxy S3. The middle button was working and even and the volume +/- was working, but the mic volume is low. The same low mic volume was with the other set I tried, HTC with a single button (no model number either).

I would assume that is a software glitch, because once you remove AGC in Smart Voice Recodrer, all of the 3 headset's (Apple EarPod, Samsung and HTC) microphones work perfectly without distortion of any sort! The built-in microphone in Nexus 5 works fine, by the way and the speakers do sound weird at times but mostly to software reasons, as there are cases where the speakers sound good enough (not great though) :)

I hope Google fixes this in their next SW update rollout :(
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! triebold 11/13/13 6:41 AM
I recently bought an in-ear headset, JVC model HA-FR201. I was having the same low mic volume issue with this headset as described above while the built-in handset mic seemed to work fine. The JVC headset has a button for ending a call, so I pressed that down while inserting the jack into the phone, and then made a recording on Smart Voice Recorder, and it worked perfectly, so my experience seems to mirror others. This is an important clue and I think we are on to something.

Agreed - and here are two videos I took that illustrate a problem with the microphone:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P55rCbdcyas

The TV is no more than 3 feet away, maximum. Yet the sound is horrendous and seems like it's being clipped by noise reduction technology. I'd expect this type of sound when a phone is trying to filter out background noise during a conversation. If I record the TV using a standard recorder, the results are far better.

Same issue here with the N5 16 black. Both headset mics work with the GNex. Neither with the N5.

Has anyone confirmed a headset with a working inline mic yet?  Maybe they know of the issue and didn't ship one in the box.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! triebold 11/13/13 11:45 AM
I was thinking it would be better if Google did ship a headset with the Nexus 5. I would think that would give Google some incentive to be sure that the headset microphone works.

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! triebold 11/14/13 5:30 AM
I have one other issue that is related to the headset microphone when used on the Nexus 5. When I use my JVC HA-FR201 headset, I can achieve normal voice level through the mic when I first press the "end call" button while plugging in the headset jack as described above. This I have confirmed through the use of Smart Voice Recorder. But, the issue I want to describe now is that after getting the mic to temporarily work at a normal level of gain, I experience no live voice feedback from the mic to the earbuds. In other words, I cannot hear myself talking through the earbuds. I noticed this as well when using the JVC headset during a phone call the one and only time that I used it for a call. So I am asking that while work is being done to correct the software that affects the mic gain issue, please also correct the live feedback issue.

I am having problems with my N5 with two different headsets, one of which is a Logitech Ultimate Ears 500vm. I am told that I sound muffled and distant. I literally have to hold the microphone to my mouth to be understood, this in a quite room. I am very concerned about this. The other is even worse. Both work very well with my Nexus 1. Further, even without headset, I am told I sound muffled and hard to hear. Again, no problem with my old N1. What to do?

Hi JL King and Nexus Team,

I would like to echo the concerns of Sumeet Kelshikar and tony_reilly. I use my phone for my work as a consultant and it is causing so many problems that I am thinking of going back to my old Nexus 1.
I need to decide soon whether I want to return the phone, so an ETA and some assurances that the problem will be taken care of would really help as
I otherwise like the phone. At this point, it's more of a tablet than a phone...

Oh my!!! I too face same issue and cannot use headphones or earbuds for doing voice calls and listening to music. Is there no other way except to send N5 back for refunds?

Is anybody able to use a headphones/earbuds with microphone to listen to music or do voice calls? I tried 2 earbuds and 1 over-the ear headphones which works like a charm in my old samsung galaxy 3 (4 yrs old) and can hear no music nor the callers can hear me in my new N5 with earbuds on. I wasted a few bucks on replacing new earbuds.

This can be no compromise as it defeats the fundamental purpose of a cell phone!

Nexus Team - what do you suggest? do we have any updates on this issue? I don't want to send my N5 back for refunds but I can't live with a faulty product as well.

Hi everyone,

I appreciate your inquiries about when a fix might be released, however we have no information to share at this time. In the meantime, several people on this thread have successfully worked around this by holding down a button on the headset (usually the middle button if your headset has one) while plugging it in to the phone.

Google team,
Is this a software issue?
I'm asking this because, I'm reading the posts here and seems that there are also people complaining that they have also that problem on Nexus 4. Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 were built by LG, is this meaning something?

Until this moment this is the only complain that I have related with this phone, but I cannot have a phone where I cannot use my headset properly.:(

@Google team, Paul:
I saw that you were able to reproduce the issue, were you able to reproduce the problem with bluetooth headsets? as you can imagine the WA suggested by you doesn't work in the bluetooth headsets.

Hi Joel,

It's a software issue (calibration) that we're working to fix.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Armand! 11/21/13 12:29 PM
Hi JL King,

Could you please clarify your last post? I have 3 sound issues that might be related to the same problem: 1. People have a hard time understanding me (muffled, distant) when I use the phone only. 2. It's even worse on speakerphone (contrary to other reports) 3. It's no better with a headset, where I can't hear much and the other party can hear even less. Note that it works OK with bluetooth. Do you expect a software update to cure all these issues or could there be an underlying hardware problem? I am very close to returning this phone at this point, to be honest.

I can confirm this issue. I have two brand new N5 and an old iphone 4, same carrier. I've used same simcard on one of the N5s and iphone.
Tests preformed with same headset on all three phones.
Volume input from mic on both nexus 5 devices is significantly lower than form old crappy iphone.
And moreover, I wouldn't say that volume from only headphone's mic's input is lower. The build-in Nexus mic also has much lower volume than the one on the iphone.
It is a 3 years old iphone for god sake.

Google or LG please resolve this.

I'm also facing this issue and would appreciate it if one of the Google chaps could set some form of expectation as to a fix. I'm currently using my phone for conference calls etc several times a day and having to hold the phone instead of using a headset - it's not ideal and the workaround, as described in the original post, isn't one that's practical for me as the mic on the phone picks up typing etc..This aside, I'm happy with the device.

Thanks,

I'm also experiencing low mic with with a wire headset.  However, I was able to get the mic to work properly.  I had the headset plugged into the phone first before I made the call.  The person on the other was able to hear me just fine.  If I plug in the headset after the call in established then the other person did not hear me.  I'm using a Samsung HS130 headset.

It seems like the sound will work through earpiece, even incoming call. And when this happen, sometimes you can not switch through speaker earpiece or bluetooth when calling.
Restart and it works again but sound is still not loud enough. I missed call when driving a lot.

Sad story as this issue has been widely reported and complained about FOR MORE THAN ONE YEAR  as it is endemic to the Nexus 4.    I had hoped that the KitKat would resolve...it is as bad as ever after the update.

In many respects the email from "- JL and the Nexus team" is an insult to all of us Nexus 4 users that have continually complained and asked for a solution. Attention Lawyers: Perhaps some sort class action is required as the next step?

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! K K SHARMA 11/26/13 12:06 AM
Hi All,

I am using LG Optimus One P500, so my statements here intend towards LG, might be applicable to Nexus 5 as well.

When I use headsets of Samsung / Nokia, they gave me low audio output, but when tried with HTC, Blackberry, LG own headsets, they did not give any issue, which gave me a conclusion that technology used in LG/HTC Blackberry for the headset connectivity is same, whereas the in Samsung / Nokia is otherwise.

Expecting the head sets to be compatible all across is not a plausible thought. The result from MattPneumaticLevel 1 on November 6th in the attachment, reinstates my earlier conclusion.

Please use the compatible headsets, instead of blaming it on Nexus 5.

Sorry for being blunt in my statement, but it is truth.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Francesco Pulcini 11/26/13 12:16 AM
Lg requires ctia connector indeed, but that does only mean that with no ctia connector the problem is even worst.

I am using original nexus headset on nexus 4 and the problem is still annoying to make normal calls. Moreover, depending on the smartphone you are calling (HTC, iPhone, lg) the problem is more or less visible. And best of the best, the worst condition for my nexus 4 is to call my girlfriend NEXUS 4!!!

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! dchn2 11/26/13 12:20 AM
@Sharma: with all due respect, it shouldn't be an hardware issue. if you follow the flow of the discussion you'll notice it doesn't just involve Samsung/Nokia brand of headphone with inline mic, but many other 3rd party headphones as well. Google has acknowledged the issue, too, so it's more or less an admission this is a software issue that can be patch. One more info for you. when using a voice recorder app that can manually adjust mic level and gain, Samsung inline mic works just fine (I tried it myself, and it has been reported in this thread previously), just a shame the mic can't be tweaked without rooting for phone call.

Appreciate your input (though how relevant that is to the discussion here is questionable.)

My Nexus 5 with v-Moda duo vibe headphones works perfectly. The video is where there are problems. The sound seems to be cutting in and out even though it does work. Phone calls are perfectly fine. It has a noise gate that is set a bit too high as well. But I'm not sure why other headphones are causing such a problem while the ones I have work well. Either way, they have an idea as to what is going on and hopefully a fix will come out quickly.

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! admat 11/29/13 11:44 PM
In India at least, LG is bundling headphones in the box along with the phone.
No problems with the said headphones, sound is absolutely crystal clear.

My one gripe with the phone however is the extremely low volume of the loudspeaker, I often end up missing calls and other notifications..
Any chance that can be fixed by a patch, or is it just the hardware ?

is there some update about this case?

You already said here that you have been able to reproduce the case, and now? when will be released the fix?

I don't speak for Google, but I would be extremely surprised if they ever issue a "fix" for this.

The problem that we are all having is that LG used the OMTP standard for the headset jack, while Apple uses the CTIA standard.

The difference is that the bottom two pins are reversed.  I doubt that they can do any software fix to change that.

There are adapters for these two standards available for about $5.  I purchased one on ebay.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Joel Ponte 12/2/13 7:26 AM
@rhawley26
But the problem is not only related with headsets with Inline Mic, also with bluetooth headsets.
This is depressing, "I have a great smartphone, but is not good to make calls". Google, is this kind of advertising that you want?

Joel
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! foxdie86 12/2/13 7:26 AM
rhawley26, I get what you are saying, but first: they should be able to change it in a low level code, like a driver.
Secondly, Why does this happen with the provided earphone? Shouldn't the provided one use the model supported by the hardware/OS?

On another matter, I agree that they won't do anything about it. First because the number of people using Nexus devices is small (relatively).
Secondly because the number of people actually complaining about the matter is even smaller.
Finally, because there are several people here talking about similar problems with their Nexus 4 devices and it looks like Google never did anything about it.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! foxdie86 12/2/13 7:28 AM
The worst part is: the Google guy came here once to say that they were able to replicate the problem but never came back with more information or to say that they were still working on it. Honestly I don't think he will appear here again.

My JVC headphones came with an adapter, but the mic had low volume with or without that adapter. It didn't seem to make any difference.

I got screwed on the Google Samsung Nexus 4G that had major reception issues, and I was really hoping to buy the Nexus 5.  But it sounds like Google has screwed this one up again too.   I use a wired headset while driving so that is really important to me.  Good thing I waited a while to let you guys do some testing for me.   Thanks.

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! rhawley26 12/3/13 9:33 AM

In some areas it seems like LG provided a headset with the phone.  In those cases it will work fine.

The problem is competing standards.  Apple, Samsung, and more recent Nokia follow one standard.  LG and older Nokia follow a different standard.  The difference is the bottom two pins being reversed.

Hi everyone, to give you an update:

For the Nexus 5, we have a software fix prepared. However, I can't provide a release estimate.

A similar fix for the Nexus 4 is being investigated, but I have no other updates at this time.

If you are experiencing audio issues other than low mic volume, please call or email our live support for assistance and potential hardware replacement:

I have the same question as well, what about the speaker volume ?

I missed 2 important calls yesterday because I just could not hear the phone  ringing .

Also, i discovered one more problem
Even though my phone is set up on the general profile with ringtone volume turned up to max, a couple of times I have observed that the phone will not ring at all and will just vibrate .

Anybody else face this, or is it just me ?

Any solutions for this ?

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Mr.G mrg 12/3/13 9:01 PM
Admat, are you using any kind of profile manager from play store? Is yes, this might be why you have these problems.
Most of these apps are broken on nexus 5 (probably not compatible with kit-kat yet).
Had same issues. The only one which works for me so far is "Sound profile".

If this is not the case than there is something wrong with your phone. One thing I can tell about my N5 is that ringtones are pretty loud.
Currently I have a ringtone "Sedna" set and when it calls, my years hurt it is so loud.

I just hade the same issue as many others here. But when I switched to the Sabotage Royale Android headset from Degauss I did not experience the problem again. Dont exactly know why but that worked, perhaps has something to do with that they make pure Android headsets with lower voltage..

@Nymul, JB NGM, & admat,

General, low speaker volumes are likely a very separate issue, and could be hardware related. I recommend you call or email our live support for assistance and potential hardware replacement:
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Nicolas Persson 12/4/13 2:40 PM
JL, but with earphones with lower electricity consumption might it not be resolved? Most ear phones are universal working at double needed voltage Android specs..

The De gauss Labs Android low voltage earphones that I have works great.

this is in airplane mode, so radios shouldn't be interfering, is this related to the issue? does anyone else get the static clicks?

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Nymul 12/4/13 3:36 PM
@JL King

Interesting you mentioned it might be hardware related.  The people at XDA made a mod for headphone and speaker volume boost.  This kind of makes me believe its more software related than it being a hardware issue.

Anyway this could be implemented on along with the next update or am I better off flashing this mod myself?

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! dchn2 12/5/13 4:55 PM
I actually used the samsung headset I previously had problem with and made a phone call with the newly patched Nexus 5. People on the other side of the line can hear me clearly. And then I used the inline mic to make some simple recording and, although it was a little bit low in volume, my voice is recorded clear and without distortion. I have no fancy app to quantify the actual improvement, nor do I know if the patch JL King referred to has been included in kitkat 4.4.1, the new OTA helps to solve my inline mic problem. I certainly hope I'm not the lucky few.

Was the fix included in 4.4.1 that rolled out yesterday?  I left myself a VM and it seems improved after wiping my phone, installing the update and running ART.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! JL King 12/6/13 11:04 AM
4.4.1 (KOT49E) includes a fix for the issue, with a decibel increase for inline mics.

If you still experience the issue or are dissatisfied with the mic volumes, please contact the retailer from which you purchased the Nexus 5 for assistance and potential hardware replacement.

4.4.1 is out for both Nexus 7s, the wifi and the 4g version, the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5. Google always pushes these over the air updates in stages. Either be patient or sideload the update. Get more guidance by googling the subject if required.

I updated my N5 to 4.4.1 and the microphone problem does not appear to be resolved, at least for me. I seem to sound a bit loader but at the expense of a loss of clarity (i.e. more muffled, harder to understand). Is it just me? I tested with an HTC headset and a Logitech one. Disappointing.

Google is rolling out the upgrade in stages over a week and over-the-air (OTA) but if you cannot wait, here are two links with information on how to manually perform the update. Read the article and disclaimer carefully as it is safer to wait for the OTA upgrade to be performed automatically.

Sideloaded 4.4.2 and I can confirm that the issue is resolved on my Nexus 5. My voice is picked up clearly and I can even use voice actions properly now too. This is using a Klipsch S4AII headset where the mic dangles below chest level so it's obvious that this fix is working well.

Thank you Google for the quick fix.

As for the Nexus 4 owners: read the posts by Google and you would see that they are implementing the same fix for the Nexus 4 but a timeframe has not yet been set.

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! pcloadletter 12/10/13 11:25 AM

Installed the 4.4.2 update on the N5 and made some calls in a noisy environment with Panasonic RP-TCM125-A and stock GNex headsets using grooveIP and the person on the other end did not complain.  Although, I was holding the mic near my mouth.  I also left some VMs and they sound better if the mic is closer to your mouth. Before the update to 4.4.1, same headset mics recorded practically silence.  The mic in corded headsets still record at a slightly lower gain than the handset, but overall, it is an improvement and seems to resolve the issue.

I can confirm that Nexus 5 with 4.4.2 is very much improved.  As has been noted, headset isn't as good as handset but that's always been the way unless you're using a fixed mic on an arm as the microphone is slapping around on your chest.  Tested with a Bluetooth headset (Jabra), old BlackBerry wired headset and the headset bundled with the Galaxy Nexus.

Massive thanks to the Google team for sorting this.

Hi everyone.  I just received the 4.2.2 update this afternoon and had a chance to test with the Noise Meter app and my Yurbuds headphones.  I'm seeing a 10dB - 15dB increase in peak level in the app with the new Android OS.  I've included screen shots depicting the previous audio levels (4.2) and the new (4.2.2) for these Yurbuds headphones.  As you can see, the level from the headset mic is still about 15dB lower than the built in mic on the phone.  Though from what I hear, that's closer to what is expected.

Thanks to everyone for bringing momentum to this issue!  Great to see that Google was able to turn around a fix for their Nexus 5 in a little over a month.  Thanks!

Regards,
Matt

I tested my Nexus 5 on a couple of other headsets and they were louder. It seems that the mod is significant enough for headsets, but not external speaker system plugged in via aux. At least it is an improvement.

On a side note, the speaker system also seems to be louder as my ringer volume has improved. Thanks Google team. Hopefully it will get to a point where the volume levels will no longer be an issue :)

My Nexus 5 (white 32GB) has the same issue where the ringer, music and notifications are so quiet I can barely hear them. The 4.4.2 update did nothing to fix so I still have to reboot my phone twice a day (at least) and this temporarily fixes this. Totally regret selling my iPhone for this piece of junk.

Have you maybe considered that your device is faulty, and needs to be replaced under warranty?  Or are you just here to spout bile?
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Scaat 12/12/13 11:50 AM
Spout bile? Wow... Have you considered keeping your mouth shut if you have nothing constructive to add to the conversation? I've been back and forth with Google support for over a week now and nothing has been fixed, nor have they offered to replace the device. When I had an issue with my iPhone, apple replaced it immediately. This nexus 5 has given me (and obviously many others) much trouble since i've gotten it and Google support has been less than helpful throughout. I posted my initial response mainly to state that rebooting the device temporarily fixes the issue for me.

I am experiencing this issue as well. Whenever I plug in my phone to my car's AUX port for a phone call, people complain about call quality. The second I switch to speaker or hold the phone to my ear (while disconnecting the AUX cord) the problem disappears. It's almost as if using an AUX cable makes the phone assume there is an external mic (when there isn't). I never had this problem on my Galaxy Nexus.

it says this thread is answered but i can't see a fix?  is this a software problem or hardware? i'm using everything stock and i don't use external microphones or bluetooth headsets.

I agree. I have the Klipsch Image E1 Noise-isolating In-Ear Headphone, and the 4.2.2 update does not fix the volume level. Still the other person can't hear anything.

The update probably fixed only the inline microphone headsets.

I was experiencing the low mic volume on my Nexus 5 running 4.4 while using the earphones (with in-line mic) from my former Sony. 4.4.2 apparently did the trick for me. I also use to plug the phone to my car radio's aux in and the output volume, though not great, is similar to my old Sony's - and so is the handset's mic during calls.

On the other hand, even with the ringtone's volume maxed up, the phone rings too low and I often miss it in non-quiet environments or when I leave it in another room of the house.

OK so I've had the 4.2.2 update now since first day it's been out, I've also tried flashing stock images of 4.4. With 4.4 although the mic level is lower, people can hear me on the end of the line. With the mic increase in 4.4.2 people can hear me better, but only if I'm in a very quiet place. If there is any back ground noise the other end cannot hear me at all at that point. In 4.4 back ground does not effect calls as much . is there a fix for this anytime or is the issue still being looked at? I've tried testing on 2x Samsung galaxy s3 headsets , 1x galaxy s4 headset and a set of Panasonic earphones with inline mic. Please fix Google or advice on even a work around.

Thank Steve

Hi Pratik, I'm bit curios to know whether u ordered your Nexus 5 from Google Play Store online or through some local retailer ?
I've ordered it from Google Play Store to Bangalore, India address and would receive it next week, So, just want to make sure whether it would be coming with earphones or not ?

Your response will be highly appreciated. Thx. Ansh

OK i fixed the issue my self. You need to be rooted, but this appears to have worked for me! Don't blame me if you device blows up. Follow this guide at xda http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2532788

I've adjusted the mic headset volume down from 16 to 12. This is the best setting for me as it now no longer picks up as much background noise but people can still hear me fine. Not the best solution but if your already routed it takes five minutes.

Got a Nexus 5 today from T-Mobile. Installed the 4.4.2 upgrade. Using my Bose Series 2 Bluetooth headset the people I'm talking to report a drastic decrease in volume. Rebooted. Still can barely be heard. Bose worked fine with my HTC prior to the new phone. So it appears 4.4.2 may have fixed the problem for some headsets but not all. Will take the phone back to T-Mobile tomorrow and get a new HTC if they can't get the Nexus to work.

lol, Google, this is still not fixed, right?  With no word from google and all these folks still having the issue, I think it's safe to say it isn't resolved.

Nicolas could you tell me about the sound quality of sabotage royale. I am planning to buy these earbud, but one more opinion would be great.
Have you tried the new earpods (ipone 5)? This sabotage royale are better, in terms of sound quality? Thanks.

I ordered N5 last week(31st Dec'13), and I have been observing the same problem in the device even though its been a long time after its release.
They have not been resolved the issue yet even after knowing from lot many customers.

Another problem I found that the phone gets so heated up after skype call for 20 minutes.

Its Definitely NOT EXPECTED FROM GOOGLE.

I have a similar problem - barely any sound comes out of the jack and no one can hear me.
I even tried attaching PC speakers (with separate power and amp), but nothing came out.

how can google not know that the sound quality is horrible? as a result I'm still using my galaxy nexus as my MP3 player for the car and in the office because my nexus 5 sound quality is utterly disappointing.i should have returned the phone i known that this issue is not even recognized as a problem.

Nexus 5 seems to use industry standard OMTP 3.5mm jack. iPhone & iPhone "compatible" headphones with mic use CTIA instead.
Has anyone here determined if this is a problem with or without a mic, and whether it's an iPhone headset?

Seems the N5 should sense which jack type is plugged in an switch to match. Haven't seen any reference saying is the finally add the software fix. (i.e. pressing the middle mic button while inserting the jack disables mic so it looks like a regular headphone).

Same Problem here, the audio quality is very poor when my nexus is connected to my car's headset (which is an Audi A1). Ane volume is also very low. I can't enjoy listen to the music anymore.
PLEASE GOOGLE FIX THIS

Connected to Audi by aux plug or by Bluetooth?
This support thread is about the 3.5mm jack.

For all those that are having the same sound quality problem with music listening, I've opened a discussion here https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!category-topic/nexus/nexus-5/GUz0G0jOuX4

Since this is a discussion that was signaled as solved, and in the category voice and calls, I'd be pleased if you wrote about audio problems in there to get more exposure for the issue

Thanks

Hello, the notice of a software fix seems to have been originally posted in December 2013, but I have not heard any further news. Is this software fix still in the works? Thanks.
Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! vivekanand bhat 3/16/14 4:45 PM
Hi,

It looks like the software fix of 4.4.2 did not fix the low mic gain problem completely. Here are my observations on my N5 after installing fix. Hope this helps Google in providing the optimum fix for the mic problem.
1. The mic input gain has improved in terms of decibels but still getting complaints from persons on the receiving end of call
2. When My mouth is nearer to the mic of the phone THAN THE REGULAR DISTANCE when on call, the person on receiving end is able to hear me clear and loud. THIS MEANS THAT THE ACTUAL PROBLEM IS NOT THE LOW INPUT GAIN OF THE MIC IN TERMS OF DECIBELS BUT THE RANGE BETWEEN THE AUDIO SOURCE AND MIC.
3. My guess is that the background noise reduction technology has adversely affected the normal functioning of the mic because I think this technology involves reducing the mic input gain based on range bw mic n sound. To fix this problem, i think the gain range between mic n audio source needs to be increased.

Re: Nexus 5 has Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics! Djamps 3/18/14 8:33 PM
Just received N5 and updated to 4.4.2.  Problem is still there-- calls on headset with inline mic are practically impossible, as the other party can't hear me (and/or reporting static/hiss).  This repeats with 3 headsets that work fine on other phones.  90% of my calls are via headset, making this device nearly useless.

Is this fix confirmed for 4.4.2?

If not, have others had success with the root + gain solution presented?

My microphone just doesn't seem to be detected at all. Can't believe there still isn't a fix for this problem..
