|Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||drasco||12/3/12 8:57 PM|
I have had the nexus 4 for a week and I am happy with my phone. However I recently realized that when I paired by bluetooth headset to the device, my WiFi connection does not operate anymore. Although it shows that my WiFi is on and it can detect my router, it just won't connect with it. As soon as I disconnect my bluetooth, everything is back to normal in regards to WiFi. I am not sure if others have experience this issue. Please advise.
Device: Nexus 4
Bluetooth device: Motorola H390

Adding some pics to illustrate my point. Of note, the 3G internet works fine even with bluetooth paired.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||drasco||12/7/12 8:00 AM|
Still facing this problem....
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Paul||12/7/12 2:46 PM|
Could you try rebooting your Nexus 4 in safe mode (instructions here) and let me know if the problem still happens? If it doesn't while in safe mode, that's a pretty good indicator that an app installed on your phone may be causing the problem.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Paul||12/7/12 2:46 PM|
Oops, forgot the link for the instructions:
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||drasco||12/7/12 8:38 PM|
Thanks for replying Paul. So after rebooting in safe mode it was fine. So I rebooted normally and it worked fine for a few hours where I have both synced Bluetooth and Wi-Fi but then the problem started again. I am not sure what that means.

I too just received my nexus 4 and am having Bluetooth problems. Mine seems more severe though. My Bluetooth just won't turn on at all. I slide it to on and it instantly jumps back to off. I have tried with the slide down settings, the main settings and even the widget. Did you have to do anything special to get your Bluetooth to turn on for the first time? Thanks!
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||drasco||12/8/12 7:46 PM|
That sucks that your nexus set is acting weird. I can say that I had no issues with my Bluetooth. Just this annoying thing. I hope your issue gets resolved soon!

I have the exact same issue , using a Logitech H800 Headset, Wifi Connected turn on Bluetooth headset, Wifi drops, turn off headset and Wifi reconnects.

If you're in safe mode and things are fine, but then switch back out of safe mode and experience a problem, that's an indication that one of the apps you've installed on your phone is the cause of the problem. The next step is to remove apps from your phone one by one -- if the problem clears up after you remove an app, that's a good indication that the app you just removed was the source of the problem.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||J Little||12/10/12 12:02 PM|
Thanks Paul, a reboot into Safe mode did fix the issue, but then after about an hour, the problem came back, and my wifi dropped off. A simple reboot of the Nexus 4, also restored the wifi + bluetooth, and it has continued to function for 3 hours so far. I will explore this by removing app by app, but since it take anywhere from 1 to many hours before the problem returns , It's going to be a bear to trouble shoot.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Paul||12/10/12 3:01 PM|
Just to clarify J Little, did the problem happen while your phone was in safe mode? If it did, then an installed app wasn't the origin of the problem.
I agree that if you do end up going app by app it could take a while, unfortunately I don't have a better suggestion.

I am having the same problems too. However, my problem is that wifi does not function pro. I'll attempt to boot in safe mode to see if this fixes the issue.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||SUTHRNFRIED||12/12/12 3:58 PM|
Same issue as the rest of you. Tap to turn on BT and it jumps to off immediately. Have to reboot and magically BT is already on. Running 100% stock and no additional apps installed. (For once). Hope to see a patch soon.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Siddarth Arumugam||12/13/12 10:47 PM|
I'm having the same issue. Safe mode operation offers only a temporary fix before the problem starts surfacing again. Streaming over the mobile network seems unaffected.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||drasco||12/13/12 10:53 PM|
if the problem doesn't persist in safe mode then 1 of your apps is causing the problem. the hard part is figuring out which one
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Siddarth Arumugam||12/13/12 10:56 PM|
Were you able to find the app causing the issue? Did removing it completely resolve the problem?
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||drasco||12/13/12 10:59 PM|
have not gotten that far yet. Sorry
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Matt France||12/17/12 7:12 AM|
I'm having similar issues. Bluetooth drops every minute or so and I have no wifi connectivity when bluetooth is enabled.
It's fairly problematic and impacting my work. Also fairly annoying when listening to music in the car, but I can live with that. I can't live with it dropping in the middle of business calls.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Casey T.||12/17/12 4:50 PM|
I have exactly the same problem!! I can not turn bluetooth on when my wifi is open. Even if I turn off my wifi, bluetooth cant be turned on!!! unless you restart the phone!!!
which is totally annoying... Does anyone have any solution for this problem?? maybe from google?
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||slewisma||12/18/12 10:18 AM|
Having what I think is a similar issue. When driving in the car bluetooth drops and reconnects fairly often. When I'm not on the phone it is just annoying as it makes a noise each time it reconnects but when I'm on the phone it is obviously a bigger issue.
|Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||RealtorRyan||12/18/12 10:34 AM|
I have the same issue as OP. Wi-Fi operates well until I connect my Bluetooth headset. This is bad for streaming movies, playing online games, streaming music, etc. Think it's a software issue?

|Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||drasco||12/18/12 11:29 AM|
Have you tried the safe mode routine? For me for problem did not show up in safe mode which according to Paul from Google implies that I have an incompatible app. I have to now painstakingly uninstall each app to find out which sucker is causing the problem. Hope you have better luck
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Casey T.||12/18/12 11:48 AM|
Well I tried safety mode and it did work. But the problem is when I reboot my phone again, the problem still exist?? even if i only reboot my phone without safety mode I can turn oon my bluetooth but it doesnt make any sense, do I have to reboot my phone every single time to make it work??
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||drasco||12/18/12 11:56 AM|
just to clarify, you do not have the problem in safe mode? if that is true then as I mentioned you have an incompatible app. Your android phone is fine, you just need to uninstall one app at a time to see which one rectifies the issue.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||RealtorRyan||12/18/12 9:07 PM|
Uninstalled all programs... still has issues... I can turn off bluetooth and wifi works just fine. Turn on bluetooth, wifi drops. I can see the wifi icon disappear off the screen (sometimes not) but everytime it comes back greyed out and then turns blue as if reconnecting. All this within seconds. But it disrupts streaming services like music, video, games, that use data while Im on a headset.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||drasco||12/19/12 6:48 AM|
My problem did not persist in safe mode which suggests that I have a bad app. Do you have the problem in safe mode? If you do then let's hope someone from Google can chime in because that's a definite OS issue especially with all your apps uninstalled.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||RealtorRyan||12/19/12 11:33 AM|
After further testing...
I factory reset my phone, put phone in safe mode, turned on wifi... wifi works great. Turned on bluetooth, wifi drops just as before. Turned bluetooth off, wifi works flawlessly. Again, all this in safe mode. Clearly this has nothing to do with the apps that are installed.
Anyone have other suggestions???
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Paul||12/19/12 2:57 PM|
If you're still experiencing the problem in safe mode Realt0rRyan, there could be a problem with your phone's hardware. I recommend contacting whomever you purchased it from to inquire about a warranty repair or replacement (if you purchased it directly from Google you can learn how to contact the Play Store here).
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||RealtorRyan||12/19/12 4:24 PM|
So I contacted Google Play Support as you suggested... At first they were mentioning that it was the bluetooth headset's fault and to contact the manufacturer. Then they moved on to, it must be my internet service provider's (my wifi) fault and to contact them. I mentioned that this happens with any bluetooth device (car, laptop, headset, etc.) and any wifi connection (work, home, public). I told them that any wifi network that I am connected to, drops when I turn on any bluetooth device. When I turn off bluetooth all wifi connections work perfectly fine. Support mentioned that this was the first they've heard of this issue and there is really no troubleshooting to go through. They mentioned I could get a warranty replacement... and then they mentioned that if Google Play doesn't find my problem when I return my phone to them, that I will have to pay for the new Nexus. Decided not to go that route.
Think we need to spread the word about this so that Google knows the issue and can get it resolved.

Sounds like a pairing issue. Have you tried having the nexus 4 visible for your headset? Under BT setting, just click on your BT name and it should be visible for a few minutes while your BT handset is also in search mode.
I have been able to pair most of my BT devices just can't seem to use wireless simultaneously but apparently that's a known issue.
Let's hope Google fixes this soon. Amazing phone but annoying bug
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||nightbirdy||12/31/12 6:13 PM|
great! looks my issue has been resolved. It's about the headset pairing with multiple devices.
I am happy so far. When playing youtube it is not very smooth, I don't know if it is because of the speed of wireless.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||drasco||12/31/12 6:18 PM|
Do you have HD on as default? If using 3G, I try not to load HD vids but with WiFi everything seems to play smooth.

Similar issue here; can get BT and Wifi on at the same time, but the BT won't be able to find anything. If I then try to switch it off, it stays locked on until I reboot the phone.
Hoping they push out an update soon for this, as it's a real pain if you forget to switch off Wifi before using BT.

got the same behaviour but only with my Apple BT Keyboard. My Sennheiser MM-550 headphones (also bluetooth) works fine without any disconnects.
When I enable BT on my Nexus 4 eveythings fine but after connecting to the keyboard it just drops the wifi connection.
So I think it's a software bug because my headphones are working fine.

A lot of people have this issue. Even I am facing this issue the Bluetooth just doesn't turn on it slides back. |Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Paul||1/14/13 3:13 PM|
To update people who may be joining this thread a little later, some people here have discovered that some third-party app that they've installed on their phone is the source of the problem. You can test this with your own phone by starting it up in safe mode as outlined in this Help Center article.
If you start your phone in safe mode and the issue goes away, that means that an app that you've installed is the source of the problem. To eliminate the app you can uninstall each app one at a time until the problem stops, which probably means the last app you removed was the source of the issue.
If you start your phone and safe mode and still have a problem then there could be an issue with your phone's hardware, in which case I recommend you get in touch with the place you purchased it from for a warranty repair or replacement. If you purchased your phone directly from Google visit this thread to learn how to contact the Google Play Store about warranty service.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Matt France||1/14/13 3:24 PM|
Paul I can assure you that while it may have helped some people, the issue I'm experiencing and likely many others, is not a 3rd party app.
I am an IT professional and know my way around technology. After a clean install with no apps I still see the same behavior. Given the scale of reports I doubt it's hardware related unless it's a flaw with all nexus 4s. If you take a look around the web you'll see that other 4.2 devices have this issue, mainly nexus 7s and galaxy nexus devices.

The wifi is crawling slow when I have the bluetooth turned off as well..
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||Matt Mathers||1/15/13 3:11 AM|
I've got a similar issue - bluetooth just won't turn on after the phone has been on for a day or so. The bluetooth switch just immediately flicks back to 'off'. This is with wireless on or off, and mobile data both on or off.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||qwerty135797||1/15/13 6:53 PM|
This has been a horrible experience!!
1. It takes google 6 weeks to send out my phone after charging me 2 day shipping.
2. My phone arrives defective.
3. It takes google forever to stop blaming programs and admit that there is a malfunction w/ the device.
4. The only resolutions Google customer service offers is an exchange for a REFURBISHED device or refund but I lose my initial shipping amount...
Class act all the way Google, Bravo... I'll make sure I remember this experience the next time I need to purchase something directly from you guys or advocate for your company in for or manner.

Very like an issue I just hit. Not used Bluetooth recently. Tried to enable today and it would not turn on. Looked up this thread but my WiFi wasn't on and turning WiFi of and on did not help with the Bluetooth. Eventually did a restart and Bluetooth was on at start up.

I'm working with some media contacts about this, we're meeting this weekend to discuss. If anyone else has some, you should consider doing the same. Unfortunately I think some bad press about their flagship OS and device is the only way we're going to get their dev team working on a solution asap.

Right out of the box I experienced this issue and more. Wifi is dead slow from an Asus N56 dual band - on either band. Bluetooth randomly drops on calls this morning, when it didn't yesterday. And I'm lucky to get 2 bars from tmobile in my office, while my three year old Nuron gets full bars.

The problem is DO I HAVE TO REBOOT EVERY SINGLE TIME WHEN I HAVE THIS ISSUE!!!!!
PLEASE SOMEONE FIX THIS! THIS IS TOO ANNOYING
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||clubtech||2/13/13 11:58 PM|
I can confirm this is happening to me to.
Please note that the headset should not only be paired and connected to replicate this issue. You actually need to be using the headset (i.e. talking on the phone, VOIP call using the headset, stream music). The wifi cimply stops working as soon you start 90% of the time.
Also 4.2.2 did not solve the issue as i got the update today and this is still happening. It seems like BT and WiFi which both work on he 2.4Ghz range do not play nicely on the nexus 4 which is unacceptable for a flashship phone.
I don't think mu device is bad according to all the comments i am seeing here. This needs to be fixed software side.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||ohforfs||2/14/13 1:22 AM|
Thanks for taking the time to update this Paul :)
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||ohforfs||2/14/13 1:27 AM|
4.2.2 won't help. This is a radio issue, so LG need to write a new radio firmware. LG are usually pretty good at fixes - they normally don't leave the phone and forget about it.
Google can't fix this and Android won't make any difference - it's an RF problem and needs the radio flashed. I would head over to XDA developers and see what they say about it. It's possible that they already have a new radio firmware to flash, but I would NOT advise this for a normal user, only tech nerds ;)
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||clubtech||2/14/13 8:51 AM|
With all due respect to LG and Google, this is BASIC QC in this day and age. The phone was released in November and this is STILL not fixed. How come BT+WiFi coexistence is not being tested before the phone is released?
This is a flagship Google phone and all these issues (Poor BT quality, Wifi crashing, very poor Mic quality) just makes this phone feel like it was made 5-7 yeas ago. I guess you get what you pay for.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||xhalez||2/14/13 9:07 AM|
Ahh, but I'm using 5ghz wifi. And the BT dropping connection is truly intermittent. I've used this phone for 5 days straight and the BT dropping in and out has only happened on 2 days. Rebooting the phone seems to fix the issue... for a time.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||dysdys||2/15/13 12:34 AM|
I can confirm the same as this post stated. You HAVE TO actually activate the bluetooth headset (i.e. talking on it). Just turning it on but leave it in "stand by" mode will not trigger the problem.
It happens in both regular boot and safe mode.
Seeing all these posts, I can't believe this is a one of hardware defective. Must be a SW issue. Google should stop blaming 3rd party app.
|Re: Just received my Nexus 4; bluetooth and wifi don't work togther||ohforfs||2/15/13 3:43 AM|
I have a bluetooth speaker (connects as a headset) that I listen to audiobooks at night with. Before I listen to my audiobook I listen to the late news on Tunein Radio (over wi-fi) for about 15 minutes. This is what I do:
1. Go to bed
2. Connect to bluetooth headset
3. Listen to radio over wi-fi: noticing the odd dropout (every couple minutes) but no wi-fi disconnect
4. Listen to audiobook on bluetooth speaker with the odd bit of app use, using wi-fi, no problems
5. Go to sleep
6. Wake up to the early news on wi-fi again
Although the wi-fi does not disconnect it does seem to be a *little* less reliable during this time.
I am not saying this means you are wrong, but I wonder what other applications you have running or what the differences are between your situation and mine: it is in these factors you might find the answer.
I am using an auto 20/40 bandwidth N wi-fi on 2.4GHz. So I am not sure whether the phone connects on 2 channels or one, but there is another device in the room connecting on 2 channels.
I have set a couple of options on my wi-fi to help things: WMM enable and Short GI disabled (short guard pulse disabled). If you are on 2.4Ghz I would also recommend trying to operate on one channel (20 not 20/40 or auto) at 150Mbps to see if that helps. My signal upstairs is only about 2 bars.
My hunch is that this is due to the radio firmware and LG will have to issue a fix to that to make things better, so it is essentially out of Google's hands: BUT... they can still hassle LG for the update.
I hope you find an answer and I am pretty sure that answer will be an updated radio firmware. BUT... it could possibly be an app causing the disconnection. If you go to app settings you can force shutdown most things and see if that helps and you can find the culprit, or even better use Paul's solution of booting in safe mode and seeing if the problem is still there. If it is not there then an app must be causing the disconnection. To boot up in safe mode, long press power button until the shutdown menu comes up, then long press shut down, then you can shut down and reboot in safe mode (apps not loaded but wi-fo / bluetooth on). If you find that the wi-fi now works then you have a software issue and Google can't fix that, you need to track down the app causing it.
Sorry for the wall of words, but hopefully it will be helpful to someone ;)

The problem occurs when you use BT for voice (Calls, or voip calls). It occurs less when you use BT for audio streaming even though it is VERY buggy when you use BT for audio streaming with WiFi turned on.

Solution coming for you guys I think!
Remember I said they would have to flash the radio to fix it? Well there is a radio flash incoming, though the main reason for it was to disable the unofficial LTE support on band 4. My guess is there will be other radio fixes in there too. It's version 4.2.2 + Baseband flash.
Here's the info on Anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6745/nexus-4-jdq39-422-ota-update-removes-unofficial-lte-on-band-4
It still hasn't rolled out to the UK yet but looks like it might be rolling out in other regions. It will be interesting to see if this fixes the BT/Wi-Fi issue.
Maybe someone could post back here once they get the update and let us know? I am not sure when it will hit the UK :(

I don't think that's a hardware defective. All my previous non-Android phones show that kind of behavior. Listening to internet radio like last.fm with wifi and bt headset was ok, but only if the buffer in the audio player is big enough. Using VOIP with a wifi connection was always really bad.
Unfortunately, the Nexus 4 is in that point the worst phone I've ever had, since I've a total loss of bt audio when I try to place a call. I tried it with different headsets and access points.
Let's hope that it's gonna be fixed.

Same problem on mine. I have to reboot to get it to work sometimes. No wifi issues with BT. Android 4.2.2 makes no difference. I am leaving BT on all the time to see if this makes any difference.

96 days and counting since this bug was first reported to Google: http://things-linux.blogspot.com/2013/02/96-days-and-counting.html
Still no fix from them.

At home I have the same issue as you. We have 2 Nexus 4s. one is my wifes and mine. I have bluetooth headphones and she has a bluetooth. both do the same thing.
Got to work and tested with my works wifi and NO Issue! I'm no techie but from what I read it's a common problem with bluetooth and wifi as the run on similar frequency? anyways now that I see that it works fine at work, I'm gonna try to change the chanel on my wifi to see if that works. Will update.

The Google rep I talked to said this was intended functionality of the device and there is nothing to be done:

If this can be corroborated, this ranks with the all time best lies in the history of technology, like Microsoft's "Bugs are features" and Apple's "Sure, it will support Mac OS X".
A smartphone that can either be smart, or a phone.

The problem is easily reproducible in safe mode as well. After quite a bit of research about this problem today, my conclusion is that this is a known problem - https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=41631.
I am extremely disappointed with all the hogwash from google on this and other issues related to bluetooth and wifi on nexus devices - https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=46834, https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=42520, https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=42255. I would be ok if google publicly admitted these (presumably software) bugs and gave a timeline for the fixes. But it is an entirely different thing to mislead customers with responses like above by Paul. This is quite against the values that I've come to associate with google.

I have the SAME issue. This has nothing to do with third party apps. Either Google has buggy Software, or Google has buggy Hardware. Please fix it or at least acknowledge your problem! This makes my phone unusable for streaming audio from Wi-Fi to my Bluetooth speakers. I need a solution as well or I plan to figure out how to return the phone to the Play store and pursue a full refund through my credit card company if needed.

Wow. I just realized the Google Rep marked his unhelpful and dishonest answer as the best one. OK, Google: Define Hubris.

I had the exact same issue. Contrary to all the nonsense peddled by Google support, the issue is with the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth drivers in Android 4.2.
I just upgraded to the official Android 4.3 image released by Google and it is now working fine. Nothing wrong with the HW: Don't let Google waste your time with an RMA. Nothing wrong with the Apps: Don't let Google waste your time uninstalling one app at a time.

Problem is fixed on android 4.3 for me.

Bluetooth interference with wifi has NOT been remedied in 4.3
This is still very much an issue with my Nexus 10 on 4.3. I did a complete factory reset before upgrading to 4.3 to start from a clean slate. This issue can be easily reproduced and demonstrated with the speedtest.net app. I have an 18mbps AT&T Uverse connection at home and with bluetooth turned off, the app displays me as getting almost the full 18mbps. As soon as I flip bluetooth on from the right dropdown shade and rerun the test, my download and upload speeds drop anywhere from 80-95%, IF the test is even able to finish, as most of the time the app says the network connection timed out due to the bluetooth interference.
