|Galaxy Nexus Dials wrong number from Contacts||spclk||4/16/12 9:12 AM|
I have the Galaxy Nexus and several times (all on different occasions) I will click on a contact to call a specific person, but instead of calling the number I touched it precedes to call a different contact in my list. At first I thought I must have accidentally touched the wrong person, but after several experiments I can confirm that I am touching the right contact. Futhermore, the contact that the phone chooses to dial seems somewhat random in its selection (ie, it is never the next person in my contact list, or anywhere even remotely close in the list.) This is a terribly annoying quirk. When this happens I have also clicked to the left of the contact (on the person graphic) to display their contact information and even that information will display the completely wrong contact. What is going on? PS: It does not always do this for the same contact (IE: It's not like it only does this for John Doe. Sometimes it will dial John Doe fine, then it may repeteadly dial someone other than John Doe. The next time it could be Mary Smith that I'm trying to call and it will call someone else entirely.) It's very intermittent and inconsistent. Usually restarting the phone can allow me to dial that person by clicking their contact, but it is annoying to want to call someone then have to restart the phone just to do so.
Help please! Has anyone else experienced this?

That does sound odd. I don't recall ever hearing of someone mentioning this issue before.
Do you have any dialing applications or contact management applications installed on your phone that were created by a third party (meaning, not the original stock applications that came with the phone)? If so, try uninstalling those from your phone to see if one of them was responsible.

Thanks for the quick response. I don't have any other contact management applications installed at all. I am using whatever the phone comes with. (I have also tried factory resetting the phone).

Thanks for the additional info. A couple more questions:
Are you experiencing this problem when you launch the Phone app then use either the call log or the contact list there? Or are you calling from the People app?
Are you only experiencing problems with calling your contacts, or have you noticed other situations where you thought you tapped one thing and something else happened as if you'd tapped something else?

The problem is only occurring when I launch the phone app and use the call log/ contact list there. I don't use the People app at all actually. To my recollection I have never experienced the problem in any other situation (such as opening an app or selecting something). It has only occurred in the phone app (which is what leads me to believe it's not a hardware issue- cause if it were it should happen other places as well right?)

AH HA! I may have just had a piece of info that may help you to diagnose the problem. If I go to the Phone App and click on the Contact button in the top right corner (that little person icon). The screen appears with frequently called contacts listed first, then if I scroll down it shows 'all contacts with phone numbers'. If I click on the top contact for example (Mom and Dad) it displays someone else's contact, if I hit call on that top person it calls a contact that it incorrect, however if I scroll down to the actual contact (Mom and Dad) not the one under frequently called and click on it it dials that person fine, and displays the proper contact info. Could it be a problem with the software under the 'frequently called' section?????? In the meantime I will carefully monitor what happens when I use the "frequently called" section to dial as opposed to the 'contact with numbers' section. I can't say for sure that it has only ever happened when using the 'frequently called section', but I can re-create the problem every time using the 'frequently called' section.

OK, good clue with the frequently called info. Let's try clearing the data on that app. To do so, follow these steps:
After you've done the above steps try making calls as normal and see if your incorrect dialing problem happens again.

I tried the steps above, however after clearing the data it did not clear the frequently called list. It remained listed on the screen. I thought maybe I was supposed to clear the app Phone / Messaging Storage, but when I select that one it will not give me the option to 'clear data'. Any ideas?

Sorry spclk, I thought those were saved under the Phone app. For the Phone/Messaging Storage app I believe you have to hit the Force stop button before you can clear data there. Clearing your message storage will remove any text messages you've got on your phone. Also note that if you force stop the app you should restart your phone as soon as possible to get the app back up and running smoothly.

So the only thing that I think ended up working (so far) was to delete the contacts that were experiencing this problem and reinstalling them in my contacts. HOWEVER, now every time I charge my phone it a) clears my frequently called list and b) and more importantly - it deletes any contact that I had just entered. In other words I can't save any new contacts because even though they show up as contact saved and they appear for the day in my contact list, when I charge my phone at night, they are gone in the morning. What on earth is going on with this phone?

This is still sounding quite odd, spclk, and I haven't ever run across anyone else experiencing anything like this before. Generally when I come across someone with a unique problem there's usually one of 2 causes: 1) a hardware problem with the phone (which seems very unlikely in this case) or 2) an app installed on the phone that's interfering with its normal functionality.
Going with theory #2, I recommend removing any extra apps you've installed on your phone. If you'd like to be methodical about it, you can remove apps one at a time and check if the contacts problem happens after each removal -- if you remove one and everything works correctly, the one you just removed was probably the culprit.
If the above suggestion doesn't do the trick (or if you'd rather not take the time to remove apps one at a time) my next recommendation is to reset your phone from Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset. Note that resetting your phone will basically return it to the same state it was in when you took it out of the box, and will delete any data you had on the phone from the device (such as photos, saves from games, etc.).
After resetting your phone if it prompts you to restore apps tell it no, and then check your contacts to see if everything's working normally. If they are working normally, you can start adding apps back to the device but proceed with caution as one of them might have caused the problem in the first place.
