Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update datsun.hl510 9/19/12 3:45 PM
Google Latitude "app" short cut is missing from this update - as is the Latitude widget.  Google Latitude overlays bug out all the time.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update datsun.hl510 9/19/12 4:19 PM
Additionally, for anyone that is as frustrated as me with Google Maps - Ver 6.6.0 (#6060014) is by for the best version.  Latitude widget works, Latitude overlay works, Latitude short cut app works, map navigation is snappy and without lag.  Download the app from the internet - it's way better than the latest one. :-/  I wish Google would listen to their users.....
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update FM-Failure 9/19/12 5:23 PM
Could we have an official statement regarding the Latitude widget please?
The only statement so far was the confirmation that the Latitude widget is no longer available.
That still does not clarify if it has been removed intentionally or if it's a bug.
The widget is still being advertised here:
Please, let us know what is going on.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update skelton.harry 9/19/12 7:23 PM
Yet another failed upgrade by GOOGLE. I don't see how this helps with my use of latitude or improved my check-ins or the updates of my friends. Guess they never bothered to listen or read all the feedback.

Bring back latitude shortcut/widget!!!

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update busyweb 9/19/12 9:32 PM
After today's google map update, I am having strange error; Google Sign-In Error >> Problem communicating Google Server, try later...
It has been showing at the notification bar time to time when sync.

I got the LogCat saying:

Would you see if this error is from the Map update or not?
Very annoying, however all the google apps are working fine without problems.
Rebooted but still showing, time to time.
I'm using 2 step authentication on this particular account, but this error never happened, and starting to happen at the right after the google map update today.
And devices are: Nexus 7, Nexus S both are Jelly Bean (multiple google accounts in them, 3 google accounts on both devices and sync enabled.)

Thanks
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Haspelknecht 9/19/12 10:13 PM
Is the problem with the "won't reroute" problem on HTC Wildfire fixed?
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Bascule 9/20/12 1:47 AM
Are you able to give us a clue on the future of Latitude? The Latitude shortcut has now followed the widget into oblivion. Is it going to morph into something else or maybe pop up in Google+?
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Laef83 9/20/12 6:46 AM
Why are you making latitude worse and worse.

First you remove the widget, without a word. I replaced it with an icon.
After the update all the icons were removed from my homescreen, which is a little annoying, but finding that i cannot put back the latitude icon because the shortcut has been removed completely sucks balls..

I agree with datsun.hl510.. 6.6.0 is the best version and you have obviously  gone beyond the top of the hill.. now only downhill is left..
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update dankomen 9/20/12 7:38 AM
Daniel,
I hope you are reading this.

The update is causing a lot of problems. I too am getting the sign in error decribed above:
Google Sign-In Error >> Problem communicating Google Server, try later..

Also the google maps icon is now missing from my google nexus phone and so is the navigation icon. My phone is 2 weeks old and with all the latest software. This icon missing problem is a common one. Read the reviews in the Google Play store. Is something being done to restore the icon?

The only way I can use the maps now is to go into the store and hit on Maps.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update FM-Failure 9/20/12 8:28 AM
" Thanks for all your continued feedback — please keep it coming, we're always open to hearing from you."
This makes me extremely angry.
Fact is, nobody gives a damn about what people post here.
Replies from the Google Team are very very rare.
I am hoping for a statement about the Latitude widget for over 2 months now.
Is it really so hard to answer this very simple question:
WILL THE LATITUDE WIDGET COME BACK OR HAS IT BEEN REMOVED INTENTIONALLY?
I consider the silence regarding this issue evil, because this is the same behaviour governments and politicians are showing: just stay silent and eventually people will forget about it.
I, however, wont.

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update dankomen 9/20/12 8:34 AM
It looks like the sign in problem is now fixed.

If your google maps icon is missing from your homescreen or google folder star it in this bug thread:
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update mrb23 9/20/12 1:05 PM
My Lattitude icon has disappeared as of last night and is no longer on the app store.  Upgrade to Map 6.12 ocurred last night.
Also I cannot track my best friend anymore.  She disappeared, we both befriended each other over and over but still cannot track each other.
We live together but cannot track each other, even in the same room.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update spm1966 9/20/12 2:28 PM
Hi. I have a Wildfire (not wildfire S).  Still broken for me. No rerouting. Always shown slightly off course. Map tiles are blurred when zooming in at junctions. The app doesn't show the name of the road I'm on. Works fine if I go back to 5.10.1. Absolutely useless. Very disappointed and angry.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update NYCDrew 9/20/12 3:04 PM
Does anyone have a link to download version 6.6 from the internet.  I'd like to get the best version for Latitude and that seems to be it.  Can someone post a link?
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update pedrosax 9/20/12 5:43 PM
This is 6.8 - http://www.androiddrawer.com/1420/download-maps-6-8-0-app-apk/  and the site also has the 6.11 version that includes the working Latitude shortcut.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update xmaxxx 9/21/12 6:26 AM
This is ridiculous.

Bring back the Latitude icon please!

Latitude usage frequency: 6-8 times/day
Maps usage frequency: once / month

And by the way, removing all homescreen shortcuts with a map update... that is not cool at all.
Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update bkkogre 9/21/12 6:31 AM
I'm seeing strange behaviour. In latitude each friend is displayed 2 times. Including myself.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update David Hepburn III 9/21/12 1:00 PM
Please bring the Latitude icon back.

This update requires users to perform several additional steps to Check In to a familiar location & see the location of friends with whom data is shared.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Daniel (Google Community Manager) 9/21/12 4:38 PM
Hello everyone,

Thanks for sharing your feedback. In regards to Latitude, yes, we removed the icon and widget to streamline the user experience. The icon and widget are not necessary to use Latitude. Latitude is a feature of Google Maps and can be accessed via the drop down menu in the Google Maps for Android app.

Thanks, Daniel
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update DRN1961 9/22/12 2:02 AM
Could you please post the link for the 6.6.0 version?  I and I am sure others would be extremely grateful!   Thank you!
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Brian Gregory 9/22/12 10:08 AM
Why does this version remove some of my starred places?

I've gone back to 6.11.1 for now.

Thank god my phone is rooted so I can use Titanium Backup. Android is just too flaking the google's developers too lazy for it to be usable without Titanium Backup.

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update videonex 9/22/12 2:11 PM
All seems well with my complete update on my Android phone except that a major street name has been changed in my area for no apparent rhyme or reason. I'd really appreciate a link to contact someone who can fix this relatively simple problem before too many people traveling in my area can't find the street that they are being directed to because it doesn't exist. Or at least the name of the street in the latest Android Google Maps isn't the name of the street.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Brian Gregory 9/22/12 2:25 PM
Please can anyone tell me a way I can have V6.11.1 installed but stop The Play Store from always telling me that an update is available?
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update bwh2 9/22/12 4:15 PM
Please make Offline Google Maps available for my Kindle Fire (original). Please, please.

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update xmaxxx 9/23/12 12:19 AM
@Daniel - thats really a great step backwards in terms of user experience and functionality. There are tons of people who would love to have quick access to latitude - why have you taken it away from them?

I will now be looking for a 3rd party location app.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update xmaxxx 9/23/12 12:20 AM
And by the way "streamline the user experience" = marketing-talk for "cripple the user experience"?
Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update RollingKeg 9/23/12 8:49 AM
Issues:

1. Still not getting the correct read out of the turn by turn navigation. It will read and repeat out  the last known street.

2. Sometimes the navigation arrow disappears after toggling traffic layer.

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Ajay Joyson 9/23/12 9:50 AM
After the Google Maps update, to launch Google Latitude
Click on Maps
wait for it
Click on drop down menu
which by the way is difficult to reach with the thumb given the large screen estate
Click Latitude
wait for it

Using Latitude shortcut in the previous version: 1 click access to Latitude

And you say you have removed the icon to streamline the user experience. I'm sorry streamlining that would mean that Latitude opens when I think about my friend's location!

Please get the shortcut back in the next version
Thanks
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update FM-Failure 9/23/12 5:10 PM
"streamlining the user experience"... ha, that's a good one.
First try to avoid to make a statement, just stay silent.
If people get too angry, make a statement and tell them the change is for their own good.
Exactly the same behaviour as politicians show.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update FM-Failure 9/23/12 5:20 PM
If you want to streamline my experience:

Bring back the Latitude widget and make it even more shiny than before!

Seriously, the widget was optional. Those who used it, loved it. Those who did not use it, did not even know that it's there.
By removing it, you did not streamline the user experience at all for those who did not use it.
But those who did use it are now missing a feature completely wich they were using on a daily basis.

So the only thing left for me to say is... streamline my ass!

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Laef83 9/23/12 11:42 PM
We also do not need widgets or shortcuts to access gmail or other apps also.

Why dont you cut out the whole launcher crap and leave us with only the appdrawer.. or is that an Apple patented design.

Unbelievable answer... just unbelievable.. this is not an answer you expect from the kind of company you claim to be..

Remember who made android big? The users
Why did it get so big? Because you listened to them

I will repeat: you've gone past the top of the hill: now it only goes down. Please... turn around.

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Haspelknecht 9/24/12 11:29 AM
Answering to myself: No, it isn't.

Why did you broke it? Why is no reaction on the side of Google to it?
Read the ratings in the store filtered for Wildfire and you see, that there is a massive problem with the app compability. Everybody complains.

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Yogesh Dandekar 9/24/12 12:54 PM
after merging this latitude in the maps, this latitude is not running in the background like other apps. due to this your location is not updating automatically & other friends can not see your updated location. every time you have to open maps then only your location will get update. This is such a ridiculous thing you people bring in the maps. You have to work on this thing. So that latitude will function as before.

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update coleburg 9/25/12 12:10 AM
How about a petition to get latitude reintroduced into the next release.  Like everyone else, I use Latitude more than Maps.  Please bring it back ASAP
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Laef83 9/25/12 12:24 AM
Try:

Maps->Latitude-> ... (menu) --> location settings

Report from this location -> On
Enable location sharing -> On

If it is already on, try turning off and on again.

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update wirelessomatic 9/25/12 5:07 PM
Thank you very much!
In my opinion, the presence of the latitude icon was an ever present source of frustration in the user experience. I'm very glad it is finally gone.

Now that we are on a roll in streamlining the user experience, may I suggest a few more enhancements:

- the Navigation icon should be removed too, it is also accessible from the drop down menu in Google Maps.
- In fact, the Maps icon should be removed too, as it is accessible from clicking an address, like in a contact card or webpage.

Again, thank you for the already completed following enhancements:

- removal of real-time updating in Latitude
- removal of latitude icon
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update J Mag 9/26/12 7:28 AM
I need my quick links to Latitude!!
If the removal of the Latitude icon is for "streamlining" why not mention that in the changelog!?  Users should be thrilled to hear about the "streamlining"
At least provide us with a shortcut to add to our home screen if you don't want the app tray getting to clogged.
The latest update also turned off my location reporting.  I wouldn't be surprised if this is the beginning of the end for Latitude.

Does anybody have any suggestions for 3rd party location reporting apps?
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Maps Fourm 9/26/12 8:25 AM
Verizon RAZR MAXX--after an app update I cannot find the app/icon anywhere at all--not in any of the manage apps categories except All, and no way to get it from All to Running or from All to the home screen. Disabling and re-enabling the app visible in the All category doesn't help.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update DaCake 9/26/12 2:12 PM
My user experience is so streamlined with this Maps version that I uninstalled it and disabled auto update for Maps.
I will stick to the stock version of Maps I have on my terminal as it includes Latitude widget and shortcut.

I don't know where Google plans to go with Latitude but you should consider it as a main feature and not a geeky-gadget.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update DaCake 9/26/12 2:15 PM
By the way, I uninstalled it also because this Maps version was just draining my battery (2x faster than usual). Don't know why ... but now that it's gone, my battery life is back to normal. Strange !
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Brian Gregory 9/27/12 3:22 AM
Please can somebody at least respond in some way to my question asking why version 6.12 doesn't let me use all my starred places?
It seems to only let me use 20 of them and I have 29.
PLEASE RESPOND.

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update ecliptik 9/27/12 11:20 AM
I don't really understand this either, why are there shortcuts for other Maps features such as Navigation and Local? Having a "meta" menu hides application functionality from users and is annoying. This is a regression, please stop this trend of "streamlining" when it's not asked for.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update ujilani91 9/28/12 6:15 PM
Thanks for posting this link.
6.8 is the perfect version, even has the feature where I can search contacts (with addresses I added in) directly in google maps.
I don't know why google has been removing features but it's been going downhill.

Dear Developers!

We were able to download offline map for Hungary when it was a Labs feature, but since you updated the application, we got the following error: Offline maps is not available in selected area. Could you please tell us what is the reason and when will it be available for us?

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Alan E Pierson 9/29/12 11:33 AM
Seeing a new issue in this update: when I tap a location related to transit (train or bus station, etc...) and then tap on the "get directions" arrow, Maps now gives me directions FROM that place rather than TO it. With previous versions of Maps, the app always gives directions TO a location I've tapped, which is what I'd _like_ the default behavior to be. This problem is definitely associated with a recent update: if I tell my Android to uninstall updates and restore the factory version of Maps, things work as I expect.

Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update psps2020 9/29/12 11:07 PM
Good to see My Places on the phone, but I could already zoom single-handed. NB: I have 5 fingers on each hand.
Another important issue for us Earthlings is that street names, subway names and pretty much all text is too small for human vision.
I am talking about a Samsung Galaxy S and an iPad II. There are many of those out there.
I know we have been moaning about this for years, but please consider it. Seriously. It could be the next killer feature.
Imagine the headlines: "Google announces that the next version of maps will be human-readable"
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Bascule 9/30/12 4:03 PM

I'm guessing you're already regretting using the the word "streamline" to mean "complicate" so I won't have a dig at that! ;-)

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update ezcry4t3d 10/1/12 1:38 AM
In case Google doesn't get their head out of their lower latitude on this one,

I have found an application that replaces the Latitude icon functionality here:

The author has also made a checkin icon that should directly take you to the check-in interface:

I deliver propane and I am sure alot of delivery folks who travel alot of back roads would agree that having secondary roads appear white on a white background, especially on a sunny day is very frustrating and an all around bad idea. granted they have a very light outline but it is nearly impossible to see when zoomed in. Could they not be shaded like a dark grey or something?

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Nélson Cunha 10/6/12 4:49 AM
Hi Daniel.

What I'm missing from this update is the blue shaded circle with the accuracy radius for my current position.
Without it simple tasks like hiking or simply finding near by POI are much more difficult. That's because assuming the blue circle exists like it did before, if you don't see it you assume the arrow positioning is a few meters accurate, which is wrong... most of the times I click the arrow and it tells me it's 1Km accurate which is pretty much useless.

That also happens with friends location on Latitude.

Please bring it back a.s.a.p.

Thanks

Don't expect any answers from google here. This forum is just a dead end to give people a sense of "I can tell google something here". It is one of the worst "support" forums I have ever seen in 20+ years of Internet.
Daniel is probably just a poorly programmed bot wich becomes active on a keyword basis once or twice every three months, just to spit out standard auto responses.
In regards to Latitude:
Maybe it is time to move to Foursquare.com

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update backitude 10/10/12 4:53 PM
Thanks ;-)   And I did add a Latitude Friends list shortcut as a widget.   Also, you can optionally assign the widget directly to an latitude friend so that Maps will launch and center on the assigned friend.  It's only beta, but keeping up with Google's functionality removal is a fulltime job.   I too miss the blue accuracy circle.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Brian Gregory 10/10/12 4:54 PM
Well I've found by extensive experimentation that my problem with V6.12 of not being able to see all my starred places can be fixed, or nearly fixed by updating all the older starred places.

Now I just have the far harder problem of trying to get Google to tell me if this is a bug that might one day get fixed or just what some deranged Google programmer blindly insists is a good idea.

Suggestion for future update:  Add a couple data boxes to Navigation feature for information available from GPS such as, speed, direction (degrees and/or general bearing such as N, S, NE, SW, ENE, ESE, etc), elevation, ETA, GPS signal strength, GPS accuracy, and others.  User could select which information to display in each box from settings.  My Garmin 450t has over 40 different items of information to choose from for each of two boxes on the map page and six boxes on a trip computer page.  I like the Navigation feathure/app; it has been very accurate and fast on my HTC One X.  I would personally like to have speed and direction/bearing boxes, but others would probably like different information; hence the selection opportunity in settings.  I've found a couple of apps that will overlay speed, but I think that it would be better to build it into the primary application.  Thanks

For 3 weeks I haave had issues with maps. at first I thought it was a phone issue and my phone was replaced but I still have the same problem and realize after reading soooo many posts that the problem is google's.  I downloaded 6.12 version and have the same issues.  Maps opens but when I click on different features it drains my battery and shuts off the phone.  I then went back to 6.3 and the same thing is happening.  When will this get fixed?  I use Samsung Charge phone.

@Sil Stone: Perhaps you haven't found an area where the 3D data is available yet. Search for London WC1N 3BG and try there. It works for me.

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Sil Stone 11/1/12 5:17 AM
Ok I uninstalled the map, deleted the data from it the updated it again and it worked, but I don't live in London so for me its a pointless update on a good phone, it's like opening your Christmas present only to find out there's nothing in the box, come on Google,

That's been gone a while I think.
Just chose latitude from the menu in Google Maps.

What happened to street names? Maps saying "turn right" or "take the next left" etc. in my driving experiments has gotten me "lost" many times as there are streets that it does not anticipate are there. Every maps user is upset about this app being cut to pieces...it's as if Google is turning into Apple. Please reintroduce voicing of street names into this app.
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Kristy Lytle 2/1/13 10:53 AM
Removing the latitude widget/map did NOT streamline my user experience. It made it less streamlined. Being able to view the locations of my friends on my homescreen in the map was much needed as it was used multiple times a day. Having to navigate through the maps application to get to latitude is a pain - not to mention it drains the battery to leave maps open and running way more than the widget did.

Besides that, a widget is OPTIONAL to use. If someone doesn't want it, they don't have to use it - but to take it away from people under the guise of 'streamlining user experience' is a cop out considering people use maps and latitude in different ways. Let the individual user decide which is more streamlined.

Keep in mind that people come to Google and Android because they have a CHOICE rather than being locked down like, say, an iPhone. Taking away choices from the user is a major step backward.

Just awful.

Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update RandyRayToo 5/15/13 10:18 AM
Hi Daniel, why won't my latitude friends update more quickly? Sometimes it's as much as 15 hours old even if I power down and power up my phone.
As both my wife and I travel a lot and both use it, we would like it updated like every five minutes or so. Is that not possible? Thanks Daniel Cheers,
Randy
PS if possible may I speak to you directly about Google Maps latitude? Thanks

Reading this forum giving to any manager in any company perfect example how to not access to customers..
Deleting posts, not listening wishes of customers, downgrading or removing fuctions - this is something really unacceptable in modern days. However Google's community manager Daniel M. dont understand it after more than half year of this thread.
I can't believe this can happen.
Possibly he is really some poorly programmed bot which occassionaly replying some words after keywords.. as somebody said here above in this forum ..

If not bot then there is my personal message to this guy "Daniel M! In my company you should not earn money not even for salted watter and you would be fired out in five minuttes to street because of your access to customers!"

Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update Kristy Lytle 5/15/13 12:39 PM
Have you left this thread for good, Daniel? Have you listened to any of us? Have you even attempted to let the developers of Google Maps and Latitude know that lots of people want the widget back? That's what a 'Manager' should be able to do reasonably and feasibly.

It's ok, though, Maps is going to be getting a 1 star rating - and the reason is because I only used maps for Latitude. Waze is the best navigation app. Too bad I can't just delete Maps permanently from my phone at this point since it's just taking up valuable space on my device since I no longer use latitude. Way to drive customers away! Good job.

It's so frustrating that Google doesn't listen.... Kristy try installing Backitude (free app) version 3.9 lets you update your location every 5 mins.  Google made the dev change it in the latest version to 15mins (or slowwr), still better than relying on Google maps though...

I just wish they would listen to their cunsumer base....
Re: Google Maps for Android - 6.12 update jaxonhollis 5/15/13 1:12 PM
Hello Kristy. You are absolutelly right! Many years I am wondering if is really possible to meet these guys like Daniel are. I would like to see them. I would like to listen them because it has to great fun, because they has to be mentally ill. Sorry for such words, but how to explain otherway theirs impotence to forward our wishes, comments and suggestions to developers?
They leading theirs products dead end although we have here incredible great ideas how to improve it.

And - i would like to see those id**ts who can remove renaming stars, who can make decision that road is lightyellow and fields are white? Are they colourblinde there?? who can make decision that you cannot place starred item near other (now there is condition based on some regions, or districts or how to call it so you can't place two starred items besides)? who can make decision removing good things which working perfect (like widget)?
I would really like to see them to rolling on the ground from laught! :D :D

I think they will never answer to us and we will never meet them ..

best regards

jaxon
