How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Andrew Denny 30/05/13 19:02
I like the new Google Maps, launched this month.
Except for one thing - it always defaults to the whole of North America. I'm in the UK and this is driving me crazy.

In the help it says "Once your address appears, click Make this my default location in the information window. This address now appears as your default location."

But 'Make my default location' isn't displaying!

See what I mean?

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Noisette 31/05/13 04:14
Those instructions are for the classic Google Maps though, not the new version.  I have the same issue and I haven't seen a solution.  Google recommends that you send feedback using the link at the top right of the map.  It is only a beta version, a preview, so hopefully this will be fixed.

This help article explains how to opt out if you prefer to use the old version.  You can either opt out temporarily or permanently.  After you click "return to classic maps" from the menu at the top right, click yes to the question "You have switched back to classic Google Maps for this session. Do you want to make the switch permanent?".  In my experience, if you opt out permanently, you'll need the link in your original invite to get back in if you want to try it again later.

Not a real answer, but you can always bookmark and therefore always access Maps via a link like

(thats what I do)
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Andrew Denny 31/05/13 04:59
Another problem (which the old Maps shares) is you can't drop a pin and use that as the default location. You can only type in a name or postcode. I move around a lot on a boat, and often want to use a new place as my default, but don't know its address or postcode.  Furthermore, in rural areas a postcode is too wide an area.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Noisette 31/05/13 05:40
There's one thing the new maps does which the old one didn't.  As you move around, the URL changes to include this information.  So if you go with Barry's suggestion of using a bookmark, you just need to zoom in on the location you're interested in and bookmark or copy the URL from the address bar.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Kip Hart 08/06/13 15:24
I was able to change my default location using the following steps.

  1. Click the gear icon at top right to open a menu
  2. From that menu, click Search Settings, which opens up a new page
  3. Enter a new default location in the text box for Location
Hope that works for you too.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Noisette 09/06/13 01:30
The problem with the location setting is that you'll only see it on the .com domain if you are in the US.  Anywhere else and you need to use your local domain to see it, .be in my case.  And I can set my location by changing .com to .be in the preferences URL, but the new maps appears to exist only the .com domain, so nothing changes, the new version of Maps still starts up zoomed out over the US.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Andrew Denny 09/06/13 16:25
Sorry, doesn't work for me. There is no 'Location' box showing, not even for the instructions you give.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Hyo 23/06/13 21:04
I had the same problem, it finally worked out for me. But the box name wasn't location. gear icon -> search setting ->

Where are you? was how it worked.

This is the link to change
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Andrew Denny 24/06/13 03:11
Doesn't work for me, sorry. There is no 'Location' setting at that link.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) barryhunter 24/06/13 05:20
See the reply from Noisette. The .com link only works if you in the US.

You can edit the domain to your country (eg .co.uk, or .fr, .de etc) - and then set the preference. But its only useful if you've also got your invite for that domain.

(eg, www.google.de/maps/preview should would for those who got their invite originally from maps.google.de - in which case set preferences via https://www.google.de/preferences?location#location
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Andrew Denny 24/06/13 05:38
Barry, Thanks!
However, hmmm, one step forward, one step back. I originally had an invite, but reset back to old maps to get my default back, and now have lost the invite and can't get back in .
Sigh.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) barryhunter 24/06/13 06:08

now have lost the invite and can't get back in .

If you've had an invite in the past, apprently you can goto your maps domain (eg maps.google.com ) and expand the blue 'new maps' box on the left, then click Enable.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) JoyA Piazza 01/07/13 06:05
I've found on a mobile that i can hold down on any point on the map and that will bring up a window which you can star.  Then, I believe you can set what ever Google Maps labeled that location to you *Home* or *Work* location.  I know for certain that you can rename any starred location from bookmarks.  I do this a lot to mark rest areas.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Andrew Denny 01/07/13 06:28
Thanks, but I think you misunderstand.

I already have my home/work locations starred.  What I'm talking about is making them the default view when opening the brand new desktop maps.  It doesn't do this (not yet, anyway). It automatically opens to showing the whole continental north America, not my locality, nor even the whole of the UK.

If you do try to set your home places, the next time you open maps, there it is back in north America again!
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Techguy9 09/07/13 12:49
The new Google maps always, always starts in Chicago for me, even though I do not live there. I have set my home my address in Montreal, but no matter what I do, it will always start in Chicago. How are there no instructions anywhere on how to set your default location?
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) rachiepie6 14/07/13 23:37
I found that if I went into maps.google.com.au instead of maps.google.com I could set my default location.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) HenDrake 16/07/13 00:59
I could also set my default location to my address in Belgium when starting from the .be site, but to no avail, the USA still is the centre of Google Maps. Very annoying. In this way the new maps is useless.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Leuven08 16/07/13 20:23
Yeah, the new Google maps is only intended for people living in the US, they don't care about the rest of the world
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Greg1979 17/07/13 08:02
I had this problem with the new map but resolved it by resetting my location in Google search.

Goto google.co.uk->Settings (bottom right)->Location

Greg
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Leuven08 17/07/13 23:02
It does not work for other countries, for example, there is no "Settings" for google.com.vn
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Greg1979 17/07/13 23:53
Ok try this: from google.co.vn search for anything, then on the results page click on the cog icon (top right), select search settings and then location
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Leuven08 17/07/13 23:59
As some people have tried from above posts, there is nothing like "Location" in the settings (The gear icon) for most of the countries.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) uberpuppy 18/07/13 09:52
search settings>location worked for me at google.co.uk. Failed on google.com.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) F.Castro 21/07/13 04:01
I am in Spain and I couldn't fix my location from "maps.google.com" but if I access googlemaps from "http://maps.google.es/" my current location is automatically shown.
I guess the .com domain shoes North America automatically.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Andrew Denny 21/07/13 06:32
I think this has now been fixed in the latest version.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) nero vanguard 31/07/13 20:44
this was my issue also. i found a solution to it. try to search for a place. when it prompt you to where you should begin, type your address or place you want to be set as your default. an option will appear saying "make dafault" or something like that. try it it worked on me.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Techguy9 31/07/13 20:52
I think you're using the old Google Maps. The new one (which we're referring to in this thread) doesn't show the options you mentioned.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) mapline 03/08/13 02:29
I had same problem but found I have saved the link to my bookmark bar. When I looked at this it starts in preview which is usa. Changed it to https://www.google.co.uk/maps and it choose my location. Then save bookmark.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) sothisislife101 06/08/13 09:46
I don't know why, but the person who posted the solution, the exact answer I was looking for, somehow has 18:21 up-down votes, yet your comment was selected as best answer.

Check it out and see if that solves the problem.

You're right about the classic vs new Google Maps, and suggesting the feedback mechanism. This issue and many others aren't as intuitive as you would expect, nor is there a readily available guide.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) barryhunter 06/08/13 10:07
Well

1) The "best answer" is depends on the user. To Andrew Denny (the OP of this thread) - that answer may well of been the best answer. It explained why the 'make my default location' etc wasnt showing.

2) It was selected as best answer before Kip Hart even made their post.

3) Kip's answer does apprently help some people, but not everyone. I think it only works reliably if you in the US. This is probably why it gets lots of votes either way, helps some, but not all.

... so on the whole the 'best answer' concept doesnt work in this case, because there isnt a univeral answer.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Kip Hart 06/08/13 10:37
I gather most people who down-voted my post were trying from sites other than .com. I had this same issue and actually visited this thread before exhausting Google's menus and options. When I got it to work, the only good thing to do was to post how I did it.

I apologize to the folks abroad for their troubles, in my defense I made no indication that was a catch-all solution - only that it worked for me.

Set the map on your desired area first and save that page as a bookmark. You can see every time you change locations the co-ordinates change on the browser address bar.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) MisterNeutron 15/11/13 17:37
It just gets worse and worse. Now when I hit the GM page, it shows me the whole U.S. There's a link labeled "Not your location? Correct it." I enter my street address, and it even suggests the correct completion for the full address. Hit Enter, and what does it say? "Location not found." I can even enter "Connecticut," and it says, "Location not found."

Doesn't anyone even give this stuff the slightest test? It's as if they've never even tried to use their own site. What is wrong with these people?!

Doesn't work for me either. I've given up and gone back to old maps. Fed up with the time I've spent on this.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) ehg 16/11/13 04:16
Andrew Denny,
I can't understand your reply for a simple reason:

my last posting here (directed to MisterNeutron & RustyJarz as both obviously are complaining about the (old) classic Maps) was intended to make clear there is just broken in the (old) classic maps the feature to set or edit the "current location" in classic GMaps
And about the so called preview of New Maps you got already (half year ago) the hint from Noisette  such a feature isn't implemented in the "preview".
Regards
ehg
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) zer0stress 20/11/13 23:02
I've been annoyed by this problem as well until I found out that the new maps open up according to the selected server. In other words, for those living in UK, trying opening maps.google.co.uk instead of maps.google.com. This should normally show the preview as UK.
Same treatment for other locations, as long as there is a local server, I suppose.
Maybe not ideal, but acceptable workaround, I think. I wish the default location could be defined as part of the maps settings...
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Leuven08 21/11/13 00:45
It surely does not work for most of other countries as many users pointed out above

Well it did work for me. I'm currently located in Singapore and can now open maps with Singapore in the preview when I go to maps.google.com.sg. Before that, I was always using maps.google.com and had North America in my preview. Similar issue as described by some users.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Andrew Denny 21/11/13 01:27
Seems to work for me, but only part of the time. That maybe because although I use Chrome, it's cross-platform. Right now I'm on a Chromebook, but I also work on Windows 8.1 and Windows XP.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Alexanon 22/11/13 14:58
Found the fix for the new version:

1)  On bottom right hand corner, click settings button and select "Search Settings"

2) Select "Location" tab and change zipcode to new location.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) gregors 23/11/13 00:48
Yeah you have to go the the local country URL to find the Location Settings to the Left and set the Location there (which is not optimal in mycase as - though I am fluent in Swedish - I prefer the American English interface.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) ehg 23/11/13 01:07
Hi  gregors, changing the  first visible ? sign in  any GMaps URL to ?hl=en-US& should give you the  American English interface.
Giv eit a try
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Andrew Denny 24/11/13 05:09
I started this thread six months ago. Since then, the immediate problem has been fixed, well done Google!

However, two problems held over from the old Maps STILL haven't been fixed.

1:  You can't drop a pin at your exact location.  This is important, because if you are travelling around a lot as I am (I live on a boat and move around a lot, but others with mobile lifestyles will understand) we don't know our postcode.  Also, we are often in a rural area, and any postcode is often quite large.  It's no trouble finding my location via GPS and maps, but to be able to drop a pin is much more practical than finding out the postcode of a location.

2:  Google Maps ignores local bus transport. Where I am now, there's a convenient and fast bus service to my work location (actually two routes) and it's easily found on sites like buschecker.co.uk.  One direct service takes 25 minutes over the 11 miles, another is about 1 hour.  However, Google only finds trains -- with one route taking about an hour but costing three times as much as bus, and another route insisting on going the other way to a major city before choosing a different route - and taking over two hours and still costing over 3 times as much as buses!

This isn't just in this location. It persistently happens around the UK, even with the preferences set to 'Use Bus'.

In short, GOOGLE MAPS DOESN'T LIKE BUSES! When will this be fixed?

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) John Gogarty 03/12/13 03:23
Go to your desired 'default view' mine being Greater London.  Go to your address bar and drag the little 'G' to your bookmarks page.  This creates a bookmark of your view, and save as "Google Maps".

Then just drag whatever icon appears at the left side of the address bar when you are looking at what you want to be your Maps default view.

Mine starts out as a padlock icon and then changes to the Maps icon as I drag it out.

Still, can't believe that you can't easily set your map location. I access most stuff through the Apps tab but there is just not way to configure up the map going that way, so will use this hack instead.

NO it has not been fixed!

There is still no way to set your default location to a different country (other than US) if you live abraod and don't want to use the local Google Maps.

I live in Japan and I can't read Japanese so I want to use the .com google map but have it start with Japan. Can't be done! On the old GM it could.

Hi
Try this
I had same problem but found I have saved the link to my bookmark bar. When I looked at this it starts in preview which is usa. Changed it to https://www.google.co.uk/maps and it choose my location. Then save bookmark.
Michael

Tried with https://www.google.com/maps/preview#!data=!1m4!1m3!1d179690!2d-76.3241789!3d40.048243 and saved as bookmark. Reload bookmark and it works fine. So just fine your location then save it as bookmark.

It seems that maps.google.com is set to the US.  There is no way to change this, much to the annoyance of the 6.8bn people who don't live in the US.

maps.google.ie, however, will default to showing Ireland.  And I would assume each local version of maps (maps.google.co.uk, maps.google.com.au, etc) will default to the country.

Annoying, as .com is supposed to be an international address (ie, country non-specific).  By right, www.google.us should default to the USA, and .com should default to wherever it detects you are from (either from your profile or your email address, etc).

Come on, Google, the majority of the world want to use the .com address and have it default to their own country.

Nope, still doesn't work for me. I do exactly what is said above, it says it has saved it, but then instantly forgets it and centres me back on USA.

I really don't understand why this is so hard to fix? Worked fine under old maps, you just put in your location into settings. Why so hard to do that? Really annoying.

They must be thinking we have no life outside Google.

I see the page, but it doesn't work for me. When I enter "Shanghai, China" (where I live) I just get the error:
Please enter a valid US city or zip code

So INCREDIBLY frustrating being shown a map of the US every time I load Google Maps.

This is what I found. It works only temporary, but if you turn on the location button ( the GPS icon bottom right) it will find your location. Next time you open the maps, it will again be on North America, but just clicking the location button again will move the map to your location.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) RyanRayLA 11/03/14 11:33
There is an easy solution. Click to google.com, be sure you're signed in. Click the gear icon at the top right, and choose "Search Settings". Then click "Location" from the menu at the left and type your location in the box titled "Where are you?"

SOLVED!

If i had a penny every time someone said this is the solution.

I have not once saw this location box where to type the location.

I simply have not seen it, and i am experienced googler.

However, just now as i went to google maps it displayed my home town.......
I will keep checking it weather it was some kind of...... coincidence....?
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Andrew Denny 12/03/14 02:53
Ryan, I started this thread 10 months ago and long ago gave up finding any solution - I stay on 'old' maps because it has an invaluable feature missing from new maps (namely, the distance measurer).

However, if you are in the USA I think you misunderstand the problem. It might work for you in the US, but it's not working for numerous people outside the US, in my case the UK. And therefore it's not "SOLVED!"

But another problem you don't address is the cases where you can't type in a home address. In my case, typing in my home village or postcode positions the pointer on the other side of a dual carriageway from where I live (I think Americans call it a freeway). If I then plot a route, it sends me two miles in the wrong direction before finding a turnoff to continue the journey - sometimes on a back lane.

If only I could drop a pin on my exact location to set a home, but no.

Hey Andrew, the same frustration here. I'm living in London and fed up with seeing America everytime I search maps.google (I know there is uk link but was only typing maps.google before and was in London directly without bothering myself to type maps.google.uk)

How can I come back to old version? I tried to follow above conversation but got lost..

Appreciate your help

Thanks

I've attached screenshots to this reply with the places folks can type in a default location, regardless of web address.

True, there is no pin-drop feature, though you can specify the default location at different levels - country, county, city, etc. Perhaps that gives you sufficient resolution?

Sorry, not enough for my circumstances.  I need a pin drop.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Andrew Denny 14/03/14 09:29
To return to 'Classic Maps', click the black Help circle in the cluster of controls at bottom-right, and in the resulting pop-up menu choose 'return to Classic Google Maps'.

Took me a while to find it too, but now I'm used to finding it, as I'm switching a lot to and fro between the two.  It's true, new Maps has some neat features, but it's missing others - not least the distance measuring tool (on bottom-left of old Maps), which I find invaluable.

This worked for me, with a slight tweak. When I go to Google, the Gear icon is no longer present. Now, you have to go to "Settings" in the lower right, then select "Search Settings" and then go to "Locaction" in the menu on the far left. Other than the location of the Gear vs. Settings option, same!
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) dgoemans 26/03/14 05:26
Indeed this works for me too by going to maps.google.nl instead of .com.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) tmccormick10 30/03/14 04:22
this thread is another good example of Google's arrogance and non-responsiveness to users. Nine months of people banging up against the *removal* (in new Google Maps) of a really basic, obvious feature, the ability to have a default start location; and no apparent response. Google seems to be trying to push people to use IP-address-inferred location, which has a variety of predictable problems -- e.g. IP inference isn't always accurate, where you are isn't necessarily what you want to look at in maps, and some people's tools and/or preferences oppose such monitoring of your location.

Incidentally, this seems to me probably an instance of what I observe to be a widespread Silicon Valley belief, that it's best not to ask the user to choose or configure anything if possible. Particularly with Google, this vision permeates products and research efforts, from Maps to driverless cars to Google Now. While this is a good idea in some ways and contexts, I think it's championed by Google et al in overly all-encompassing and messianic way that doesn't necessarily serve users or products. It turns out that sometimes people know better than algorithms what they they want, or in any case they would rather be able to choose for themselves and shape their own tools (e.g. by setting default views). Who knew? Not the all-knowing Google, it sometimes seems.

Search Settings from the gear icon in the bottom right doesn't have a Location section in the Menu on the left. All I have are "Search results", "Languages" and "Help"... Am I missing something? Maps is really slow from China, so every time I want to use a map, I have to wait 20 seconds for a totally useless map of North America to load! A map of my part of Beijing would be so much more useful...

And no, Baidu Maps isn't an alternative ;)
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) PAV1 11/04/14 05:01

Home and Work addresses need setting up in settings. New maps home page>settings cog icon bottom right>My places>Home and Work buttons top right ish

Also I pinched this from a post elsewhere hope they don't mind for phone instruction:

The one feature of Google Now's voice recognition that I used most was "navigate home". I'd tap the microphone icon, say "navigate home", and with zero more clicks, it would start navigating.

A few months ago, this just stopped working. I could say "navigate to 123 Main Street, Blah City" and that would work, but that's a lot less convenient.

Finally the other day, I stumbled upon this fix:

  • Open Maps -> menu thingy on bottom left -> Settings -> Edit home or work
  • The data for "Edit home address" was filled in and correct. It said "Blah Apartments, 123 Blah Street, Apt 456, Blahville, ST".
  • Even though it's filled in, tap it anyway!
  • Tap on the choice that corresponds to my home.
  • Now the data for "Edit home address" subtly changes to "123 Blah Street, Apt 456, Blahville, ST". Note that "Blah Apartments" is gone.

Boom, after that, voice recognition recognizes "navigate home" again!

No idea why this worked, but it did.

Open Google Maps.
Search for required location.
Adjust some.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) robotronik 16/04/14 08:20
Here's your answer:

Center the map on "My location"

You can center the map on your current location so it’s easy to see what’s around you.
  1. Open the new Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right corner of the map, click the [gray icon] "My Location" button.
  3. After a few moments, the map will center on your location.
  4. Currently, you can't automatically get directions to or from your location using the “blue dot” in the new Google Maps. You need to type your location.

Understanding the My location button

The My location feature is disabled.

Google Maps doesn’t have your location.

The map isn't centered on your location, but you have recently centered the map.* To re-center the map on your location, click the button again.

The map is centered on your location.

*Note: If you turn on My location, Google temporarily stores this location to help improve your experience on Google Maps and other Google products.

Change the “current location” you see when you open Maps

To change the location you see when you first open Google Maps, change your Google location:

  1. Open the new Google Maps.
  2. Click the gear icon in the bottom right corner of the new Google Maps.
  3. Click Search settings.
  4. Click Location to update your location.

To provide you with the most relevant results, your location is detected based on your IP address. Using IP gives us a chance to guess what location may be most relevant for you.

But do you really read the previous post?
Do we have to say another hundred times that for most of the people coming here, IT IS NOT THE SOLUTION BECAUSE THERE IS NO LOCATION SETTINGS IN SEARCH PREFERENCES?
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) DrDjuro 27/04/14 11:38
Actually, I think the Location setting in Settings->Search Settings seems to be service provider ISP or DNS specific.

If I login through VPN into a US based network, the Location setting in google maps does appear but would only let me enter a valid US zip code / location.
If I disconnect the VPN and fallback back to my canadian ISP, restart google maps, the Location setting is no longer there. But it remembered my US based location that I set while connected into a US network.

This doesn't help my case off course. I can only select the clsoes US zip code to my canadian location. It seems that the Location setting is currently only visible in US and limitted to US zip codes.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) DrDjuro 27/04/14 11:42
I figured out my problem.

If I use, maps.google.com, I need to be connected to a US ISP and can only select a US address
If I use maps.google.ca or //www.google.ca/maps/, then the Location setting does appear and does let me select a canadian address.

I have sent feedback saying the following. Anyone can use this:

The new Google Maps is great but there are two crucial features that are still left out:

*Setting your own starting location for those outside North America

*Point-to-point distance measurer

Thank you
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) David Timoney 19/05/14 05:22
This may not explain everyone's problem, but the issue of non-US users defaulting to North America may be related to the search settings in Google Toolbar. If General / Search Features / Use Google site is set to .com, then this may override your default (non-US) location when Maps is loaded. I have a UK default location. When I changed the Toolbar option to the .co.uk site, Maps then loaded correctly. I can recreate the problem by toggling the setting to .com. I'm using IE11 on Win8.1, Google Toolbar 7.5.5111.1712/en-GB.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Noisette 19/05/14 05:25
Hi David, you're right.  It depends on the map domain, so if you use maps.google.com you'll get the US.  If you use maps.google.co.uk, you'll get the UK.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) David Timoney 19/05/14 08:50
Hi Noisette,

That’s not quite what I’m saying. Let me elaborate ...

Maps uses the location value in the site-specific search preferences. In other words, it isn’t the map domain that matters but the Google search domain, of which Maps is a sub-domain (i.e. maps.google.fr, which resolves to google.fr/maps). These preferences are instantiated for each domain that you have used and held in your Google account (so all the following assumes you are logged in). You can effectively toggle between different sets by changing the search site default.

For example, I have just changed my Toolbar default to the .au (Australian) site. When I load Maps, I now see Australia (i.e. continental scale, because it cannot be any more specific than the implicit location of the .au site). If I click the 'gear' icon and select Search Settings, the location option is now available and null. If I set it to Perth, the next time I open the browser and load Maps, I see Perth, Western Australia.

If I now reset the Toolbar default search site to .co.uk, when I reboot the browser and open Maps I see the UK. If I click the 'gear' icon and select Search Settings, the location option is again available and null. If I set it to Perth, the next time I open the browser and load Maps, I see Perth, Scotland.

If you go directly to a specific domain, e.g. google.fr, then the Maps icon in the 'Rubik' menu will take you to the corresponding Maps site, i.e. google.fr/maps. However, if you click the Maps button on the Google Toolbar (assuming you have it visible), this will take you to the Maps site of your default search domain and zoom in on the location you have previously set.

If I now reset the Toolbar default search site to .com, when I reboot the browser and open Maps I see North America. If I click the gear icon and select Search Settings, the location option is not available. This is the rather baffling behaviour noted by many non-US users, who presumably have the .com site as their search default but understandably want to start Maps with a view of another part of the globe. You can fix the Maps default location, but only by changing your search default domain to something other than .com.

Cheers.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) el-gordo 19/05/14 17:26
Interestingly I find I get different results depending on which way I get to Google Maps.

So, if I click on the "Apps" button that is embedded in the normal search page, it will open a map based on the search domain (i.e. if I am using .co.uk it will open the UK).

However, if I go to maps via the "Apps" button on my tool bar (which is my normal route as I have my preferred extensions in there) then it will always open on USA, no matter what I do.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) David Timoney 20/05/14 07:41
el-gordo,

That suggests that your default search domain is .com. You can check this via Toolbar: go to Options / General / Search features / Use Google site. This setting controls which site is loaded when you click the Google logo on the left-hand side of the toolbar, as well as the Maps site loaded when you click the custom button on the toolbar. You can think of this as your global default.

You can set a different Google site as your default homepage in your browser, or you can simply load a different site from a Favourite/Bookmark. The Maps icon in the Search embedded menu inherits the domain from the loaded search site, so this is not directly driven by the global default setting. Each Google Search site you use has its own preferences (i.e. specific to the site+user combo), including a default location for use when loading Maps. These are accesible from the Search main page (via Settings / Search settings) or the Maps main page (via 'gear' / Search settings).

For some obscure reason, the location option is suppressed if your global default search site (the one you can set via Toolbar) is set to .com but you are a non-US user (presumably determined from your IP address). This may be a bug. Quite a few non-US users will have explicitly set .com as their global default over the years. The new version of Maps appears not to have inherited the default location setting from the old version, presumably because this was previously held independently of the site-specific preferences. The new version "tidies" this up.

Having a null location when you first load the new version of Maps is only a problem because the location option in settings is unavailable. The workaround is to change your global default, via Toolbar, to a site other than .com. If you need to search the .com site explicitly, you can toggle this on via the 'Use Google.com' link in the bottom-right corner of the main Search page.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) el-gordo 21/05/14 00:44
Hi David,

Not sure if I am missing something as I don't appear to have the same options via toolbar. I only have the Customise / Control Google Chrome Menu (the 3 lines in the top right corner). This doesn't give me the same options you suggest but I can go

Settings > Search > Manage Search Engines > and then select the default. This is set to .com.au and has been for some time. It still centers me on USA

I have actually changed it today to .com and logged out and in, then changed it back to .com.au but still no luck. Back to the States.

Is there another tool bar menu somewhere that I am missing?
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) David Timoney 21/05/14 04:42
Hi el-gordo,

I'm referring to the Google Toolbar add-on, which is available for use with Internet Explorer, whereas you are looking at the settings within the Chrome browser. Google Toolbar is not available for Chrome as the functionality is already built-in.

Another post (https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/zXRG7-AEgfw) mentions editing the "Local State" file for Chrome as an alternative to the Manage Search Engines route. You might try this.

Cheers.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) twinprime 21/05/14 07:18
When click the gear icon and go to Search Setting, I have a few menus but I DO NOT have the location option. I'm opening the maps in Chrome on Windows 7. Same story on Windows 8.1 on another laptop. Previously there's an option Not your location? Change it" and I used that to change my default location to London *several* times TO NO AVAIL (it still opens up the huge map of the United States every time I open maps.google.com)

This is so frustrating. How could something like this be so hard to fix.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) hutchwilco 22/05/14 14:12
I have come up to this same problem have found the solution:

If you visit maps.google.com   (note the .com) you won't be able to see location in the Search Settings.

If you visit maps.google.co.(your country) (in my case .nz) I CAN see the Location in settings, and simply typed in "New Zealand". Now I see a map of NZ when I open Maps. Crazy that that makes a difference but anyway.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) el-gordo 22/05/14 20:46
Still can't solve my problem of selecting maps from Chrome Apps (see attached screenshot).

Looking at all the various posts, I presume now that this is because the map under the App Store is google.com and there is no way of changing it so will always come up as USA. Bit crazy but I just can't find a fix to it, so have deleted from my Apps (bit annoying as I tend to navigate this way) and will just access via web page instead.

Cheers for all responses and certainly some fixes on here for anything other than Google Chrome App Store.

What I did to get around the North America default (I live in Australia, and it's annoying as hell for me too!), was to go to Google Maps, go to the address saved as "Home" in the search box, highlight the address in the browser's address bar, then drag and drop the address onto the Bookmark bar - simples!

Alright, this thread may be old but these steps might work for you.

1) Go to maps.google.co.uk.  This link defaults to a zoomed-out view of the UK.
2) Are you in the New Google Maps? If not, you may have an Opt In button showing up in the left pane.
3) Click the gear icon on the bottom right corner of your display, then click "Search Settings" (bottom-most icon)
4) On the left-hand side of your screen, click "Location" (third link down)
5) Where it asks "Where are you?", enter part or all of your current location.
6) Click "Save".

If you hit a snag anywhere in this procedure, feel free to respond.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Filipe Saraiva 08/06/14 07:00
There is a product problem here which is Google Search location settings being tied to TLDs. It makes no sense.

Using google.com and setting my language to US English ensures that I get more relevant search results to my search needs and that new features or updates rollout to me sooner across all the Google products I use. If English is my mother language or if I'm otherwise fluent in it, why should I choose any different?

I do want to share my physical location with Google though, so that regardless of the product I'm using, Google can tailor my US English powered interface to my local environment... like, wouldn't it be great if I could see my home state when I open google.com/maps? Oh wait, I can't do that because I'm using the better .com service? Like I said, it makes no sense.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) PikalaxALT 08/06/14 16:34
If you go to maps.google.pt and sign in with the same Google account, all your search and language settings should be automatically linked, plus the maps, by default, will center at and zoom to Portugal.  See if using Google Maps at the .PT domain allows you to customize your default location.

finally done... after reading many posts.... I am in UK while map always starting in US..... pls follow these steps:

1. go to google map, click on gear (bottom right corner) ==> "Search Setting", then scroll down and click on alternative url used for search.... in my case said "Use Google.co.uk" this is not a setting option but shown as a menu at the bottom of the page. then save it or I think it comes out of the page.... either would not matter.
2. now in google search page (NOT in map app) search for your city or location.
3. then click on the map tab on top of the search result. this should open the map and showing your location on the map.
4. now click on the gear button (at the bottom right corner) , then search settings...... once there, just click on save button.... "location" option will not be there yet!
5. now open a new tab and run the map app... it should open in your local url (not .com.... in my case opens at .co.uk), and should show your location....!
6. now if you go to the gear ==> search setting, you should see the "location" option there as you are not in .com any more..... olla....

pls update the others if you succeed.....

Have you actually TRIED that, or just got it from the Google documentation? The problem is the maps app does not match the documentation... there is no "Location" to click on!

Daniel: rather than just mark as "best answer" the one that repeats Google's documentation, why not actually TRY it for yourself and get back to us on how to ACTUALLY set your default location?
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) chrismireya 20/07/14 11:01
My issue:

In the classic Google Maps application run from the web browser on the PC, you could set a default address.  Whenever you needed to look up directions, the default address would appear in the first box.  You simply needed to put the location that you're looking for in the second box and, presto, you have accurate directions.

Now, the new Google Maps (not so great in my opinion) causes users to type in their starting address each and every time.

While I suspect that there might be a solution for this, the old rule of thumb for user interface is, "If it's complicated for the average user, it is poorly designed."  I am not an average user.  If I am having difficulty figuring this out, then this interface if VERY poorly designed.

What I've tried:

I've clicked on settings gray cog (or "gear") icon on the bottom right of Google Maps and then Search Settings and finally Location.  In Location, I added my home address.  However, when I open Google Maps and click for Directions, I still have to input my home address.  I've used Location Services too, but this still doesn't provide a solution.

Verdict:

I absolutely hate the new Google Maps because of this.  I can't see the advantage of the new Google Maps over the older when the most crucial elements are left out (or too difficult to figure out in trying to use them again).  If Google doesn't fix this soon (*and it has already been more than a year and there is still no "fix"), then I will be moving to another application for my mapping needs.

Please fix this Google!
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) ehg 20/07/14 11:17
yes and no.

You can use and set the features "home" and "work"
Can also use your default address in a Gmail contact - any address of a saved contact can uses similar as "home" and "work".
This dosn't prevent you vom typing in few characters in the search box or the directions. But is a great feature thuogh.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Noisette 20/07/14 12:21
chrismireya, the location setting you used controls the location you see when you open Google Maps on the desktop.  Normally it's sufficient to put in your town or city.

As ehg explains, your home location for directions needs to be set separately.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) chrismireya 20/07/14 20:26
The link that you provided for setting a location (https://support.google.com/maps/answer/3093979?ctx=c2n_places3) doesn't work for the new Google Maps.

Their directions:

  • Open the new Google Maps. Make sure you’re signed in.
  • Type "home" or "work" into the search box.
  • Click set location next to the search result that appears below the search box.
  • Type in your home or work address, then press Enter.

  • Problem: When I type in "home," my address appears.  However, next to my address, I can only see "edit" which doesn't contain the "set location" feature.  My home address -- which was ALREADY set previously -- doesn't help when I want to get directions.  It still takes extra steps to do this (either by typing in my address or by clicking on the little home icon when I click on "directions."  This is a fatal flaw.  If this is difficult and frustrating for me -- and I am the guy that others turn to for their tech help -- then the average user probably has even more issues.  In fact, I would urge Google techs to see if there is any difference in using directions now compared to the classic Google Maps interface.

This is a serious flaw and a lack of clarity on Google's part.

the link I provided works definitively on my end (would not have provided it otherwise)
    Providing a screenshot below

Are you sure about two important points:

1 using the new maps and not MapsEngine Lite (or Pro) instead?

    2. having enabled the Web History

as this a "conditio sine qua non" for "home" and "work"

Would like getting a similar screenshot from you as provided by me.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Noisette 21/07/14 03:22
I'm afraid I don't really understand you chrismireya.  Everything works as I would expect it to.  If your address appears when you start to type "home", then you have already set it, so you see an edit button.  If you follow the "Show me how" link on that help page, it will tell you that your home address is set.

When you ask for directions, home is not selected automatically as the starting point.  It might not be your starting point, Google can't can't know that.  It is however presented as an option under the directions window, one click away.  I've just checked in the classic Maps, and in fact there is one less click in the new maps.  In the classic maps I didn't get suggestions, I had to start typing "Home", then click on it when it appeared.

Noisette you are right. It only shows the location setting Google.com if you are searching from United States. And one correction/ Addition is that it will only take zipcodes and city names associated to your current country.
For Example: If you are in UK and you want to change your location in maps.google.co.uk then you can only change your location to any place in UK not in USA.

This is also a problem for the US. I have a work computer which means that my IP address is in one state when I really work in another. As a result, it would be very helpful if I could control what my "current location" actually is.

I have the same problem with the new Google map. Here's what I did: Click on the grey dot at the right bottom that says "My Location", a pop-up in the form of a banner below your URL will ask if Google can use your location. Click "yes" and each time you open Google map, it will center not only in your country but the city you live in. Hope this helps.

    @Christopher

I can't see from your one screenshot two informations:
    1. are you signed in?
    2. did you enable your Google Search History ?

I  fulfilled both conditions and then my GMaps looks pretty different after just typing in "H..."
And as you can see I can set a location for  "Home" through the blue highlighted link "set location"

Once I set the location (lets say to "37 Church St, London, United Kingdom") and type in again "H..." I am able to edit the predefined "Home" location through a link "edit" It is rightmost the shown Home location (the link "edit" is hidden in the screenshot below due to magnifying the part of the screen)

I was having the same problem but found the solution...  I changed my home address to my new address but my google maps on my computer kept opening to my old address.  I found that I just needed to make a new bookmark for my google maps with the new address and delete the old one.  Now when I open Google Maps, it defaults to the address I bookmarked and when getting directions it defaults to my new address as the start location.

    I hope this helps!

robotronik, that's fine if (a) you want your current location as the default location and (b) Google Maps has correctly identified your current location.

What do you do if, like me, you want (a) your default location to be in a place that is hundreds of kilometers from where you currently happen to be, and (b) your default view to encompass a particular area, not to zoom in?

And what do you do if (c) Google Maps has decided that you are somewhere other than where you really are?

    Hello
Kalense I believ at the moment and in your case the best would be to bookmark a Maps showing yor default location
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) dfbear 10/07/15 12:03
The main suggested settings didn't work.

For a long time, Google Maps has opened to my home city. I set it long ago.
Now Ive moved. When I ask it to find location and give it permission, it finds another city further north.
If I go into search settings and set it there, it shows my location properly, but thats not saved.

What worked was saving a bookmark. Lame, but thats it.

This should be much more obvious to do. Grabbing a location marker and setting it as default is a help, but I'd also like to save the view of that location. Its not real useful zoomed in.

And I sure as heck am not going to give Google permission to track me all the time. This merging of accounts has been a real pain in the neck. I use different accounts for work and personal but it keeps wanting to connect them. I don't want to be logged in automatically to every other service as it gets in the way of using the other services with a different account. This should be a choice.

When you did an internet search for google maps, it gave your then present location.  You bookmarked that location.  Keeps coming back to that location.  Now you are in a new location.  Remove the old google map bookmark, do a new google map search, comes up to your current location.  Now bookmark the new location.

Instead of all these "go to this page and find this icon and then click this button" nonsense, just visit https://www.google.com/preferences#location

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) dfbear 14/09/15 10:33
For me, there are no location settings on that page. None of the Location suggestions worked. When I open Google Maps it always goes to where I used to live, saved in an older version of Maps.

I simply bookmarked the Maps view I wanted and use the bookmark when I want to start locally.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Noisette 14/09/15 10:42
The link given by bvadnais (https://www.google.com/preferences#location) works in the US.

If you are not in the US you will need to change the domain to your own country domain:

    etc.

    Using a bookmark works well.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) dfbear 14/09/15 11:18
Ah - now there's a key detail. Thanks, Noisette!
When I changed to my country domain, it displays my location and I can save it.

Going back to the original.com link, I notice now there is a quiet link to my countries domain in the footer. If I click that, it adds the Location item to the left menu where I can set it also.

I will typically continue to use bookmarks though as these have the preferred view.

OK for me I found that my Google Maps bookmark always brought me to my old address. I followed the instructions on robtronik's post, except my menu (gear icon) is in the top left hand corner. After i clicked Search settings and Location, I saved a new bookmark, then deleted my old bookmark. Problem solved.

Google has changed things (again).   The option to set your location is no longer available in the search settings.

When doing a web search, the option to set your location is at the bottom of the results page.

For Maps, this is what Google has to say:

You can change the part of the map that you see when you open Google Maps in two ways:

    • Turn on Location History for your Google Account. If you have Location History turned on, your location could be based on the location of your mobile device. Learn more about Location History.
    • Allow Maps to get your location when you're on desktop. Learn how to give Maps permission to use your location.

If using the full version of Maps you can also click the   icon above the + sign at the bottom right to centre the map on your location.

You can always set the Map up as you want it and bookmark it.

Note: given the length of this thread, I'm marking this response as best answer to make it easily accessible.

Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) UTCDeseng 10/12/15 03:19
Google changed this.  For some reason my work PC, which sits outside London, has an IP address that takes Google Maps to Plymouth.  Every time I open Maps, I see Plymouth and have to zoom and scroll across the country.  I used to be able to go into settings and TELL Google where I wanted my default location to be.  Now I can't and its annoying.  When I click on the "Show Location" icon, I simply get an error saying my location cannot be determined.  I have set my Google Work location, but that makes no difference to where the map defaults to upon start up.  Use Location is turned on.  The option that Tomgeorgejr posted does not appear in my menu.

Making location automatic without manual override has made it less useful.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Brendon Bolin 10/12/15 10:42
This is incredibly frustrating. As of today, it has reset to be about 2500 miles from my actual location when I am using my work computer with seemingly no way to fix it. This combined with how much slower maps has gotten, I may have to abandon using it altogether. Extremely disappointing. All I get now where the setting gear used to be is a lightning bolt to toggle to lite mode or note. Both of which such at this point.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Tomdubbs 11/12/15 13:26
This is really frustrating. For geographical research, I used to have my default map location as a zoom extent of the UK. From there I could then pan across the world or zoom straight into any area of interest. Now, from December 2015, the default location loads a zoom extent of a town near my physical location and I have to zoom out every time before I can orientate myself. Why does Google Maps keep wasting my time like this?
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) 499 16/01/16 05:18
I hate to proceed like that, for its like using duck tape to fix mechanic, but it works and I dont know otherwise.

First, I choose which location I want (say, Paris at a scale where I see the whole city).

Then, I add THAT PAGE to my favorites.

Next time I open explorer, I click on that favorite, and tadam, I'm at Paris.
Re: How do I set the default location for the new Google Maps? (May 2013) Brian_nr16 17/01/16 09:30
My android tablet and phone report correct location (presumably from GPS and mobile phone network data).  My laptop connected by wi-fi to my BT Homehub reports correct location (using ..? - no GPS or mobile phone network).  But my desktop (connected by cable to the BT Homehub) reports the wrong location.  It used to be OK ('till Christmas 2015?) then it started reporting my location as about 2 Km away, and as of yesterday I have apparently moved to Fakenham about 40 km away.  I haven't been to Fakenham for years, none of my devices have been on holiday there, so why has this happened?  I've followed the advice about doing a Google search and going to the bottom of the page and update location, use precise location etc ... and that now assures me with the blue circle that I am in Fakenham, Norfolk.  Wrong!
Can't believe, after all the reports of these problems over such long time that this isn't solved ... or at least that there isn't a definitive reason why it gives the incorrect location.

How do I turn off Location-Aware Browsing permanently?

Location-Aware Browsing is always opt-in in Firefox. No location information is ever sent without your permission. If you wish to disable the feature completely, please follow this set of steps:

    • In the URL bar, type about:config
    • Type geo.enabled
    • Double click on the geo.enabled preference
    • Location-Aware Browsing is now disabled
