WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/15/12 9:57 AM

Found a work-around.

First deinstall v4.5.3.

Second install v3, can be downloaded here (copy to sd card).

Third reinstall v4.5.3, can be downloaded here (extract BlackBerry-47 and copy to sd card) or ota.

So much for google's "do no harm".

If you used this workaround, please reply to the post and tell google what you think of their behaviour.

I won't take credit for it, but I'm not posting where I got it from in case google didn't want us to find out how to get around this.

Hi, can u plz help me with the detail process.... Coz first I uninstalled the google maps.... Secondly I installed that v3 software.... Thirdly I installed the 4.5.3.... But still my application is stuck at terms page....please help
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/15/12 2:00 PM
If you're stuck at the same place, start over from the beginning.

Delete v4.5.3. reboot phone here.
Unzip v3, copy to sd card, run jad. Is v3 working at this point?
If so, unzip v4, copy blackberry-47 folder to sd card, same as you did for v3 (can do both at the same time into differnt folders), run jad. do not deinstall v3 first, install v4.5.3 over v3.Should work. Does for others. If not, maybe try the ota link, just run it from the browser on your bb.

good luck.

When I install v3, I am unable to select the "accept" for the terms and conditions when it first boots up.  The Decline option is highlighted, and I am unable to either use my Torch 9800 touchscreen to select "accept" or my trackball/trackbutton to move to the "accept" option.  It acts like it is frozen on the "decline" option.  Anyone know how I can choose the "accept" option on v3.0 using a Torch 9800 running OS 6.0 bundle 2647.  I think if I can get past this step, I can upgrade and use google maps again.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

When I click on "here" to install V3, a new page open that is invalid.
Please advice
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/15/12 3:52 PM
Sorry, I have a 9900 running 7.1 so I have no idea what's causing your problem. I'm able to select accept.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/15/12 3:56 PM
@alaa obeid. I have no idea what you are doing. you have to download the zip file on your pc, unzip it. copy the folder (containing cods and a jad) onto the sd card in the blackberry using desktop manager and then browse into the folder using the file manager on the blackberry. click on the jad and it will install.

Hopefully they don't break it again for us with the next version released...

Glad to help. I thank the person who figured out out. (Not me.)

I wonder where google is in all of this? The problem is still there, this is just a way around it.

I don't get how this powerful company can make a change that breaks a useful application and be silent about it. Why is no one from google on their product forum apologizing for breaking this application and committing to fix it ASAP?
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Patreisha Richey 12/15/12 5:18 PM
I tried all three of the links, but regretfully none of them have worked for me. However, I hope Google and/or RIM are working to fix this. Some of us depend heavily on Google Maps.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/15/12 5:22 PM
What do you mean none of them worked? The links in the original post got mangled. I reposted them in the second post. If you use those links, they should work fine, as they have for others.

Hello,

I've got the same problem and have followed "bimmerdriver's method. And it's worked for me as well !

Instead of using SD (which I don't have), I've actually just connected the Blackberry (Bold 9930) to a laptop and transferred file to the Blackberry drive and installed from there.

Thank you !!

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY NOLAKjun BB Bold 12/15/12 11:50 PM
And how do we find the app in v3 to download?  All my search results point to the JavaScript API but not the full app.  An interesting side note here is that the Google page for downloading the app says it's for Android only and the iPhone is shown as an option on a dropdown list but there's no way to select it so it appears Google is trying to force the maps users to buy their awful phones just to use the app... which makes me think a better solution is buying a GPS that doesn't stop working every time I upgrade my BB.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/16/12 12:02 AM
the links are in the second post. download them, unzip them, move them to the sd card on the phone and run them. easy peasy.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY NOLAKjun BB Bold 12/16/12 12:37 AM
Thanks Bimmerdriver, once I figured out the download, unzip, move, install routine it worked like a charm!  This is a great help to all of us who've been pulling our hair out for days.

As for the response to C-Man's post - I won't take back anything bad I've said about Google Maps since getting my 9900 because I initially reported that GM wasn't working correctly on the 9900 and the only response I could get from Google was that there's nothing wrong and the app works fine - even though it clearly did NOT work fine on my brand new, fresh out of the box phone.  In the months since then I've put up with daily crashes, recently multiple times per day, and then 2 days ago I added BES service to my formerly BIS account then wiped the device to prevent personal data from being uploaded to the BES. Once the device was operational again I went through the usual configuration settings and reactivated all my third party apps which are working as usual, except GM. When I launch GM 4.3.5 it would hang on the T&C page like everyone else here is reporting. I removed and reinstalled GM twice, powered down repeatedly, reset via battery removal and have now removed BES from my account, returning to the BIS but nothing worked until I found your fix posted 10 mins before my most recent search.  I still find it interesting that the Google Maps page says the app is ONLY for Android phones and I'm seriously considering an after Christmas sale to buy myself a stand alone GPS that won't stop working every time I upgrade my phone.  (Note for Google:  When I reported the GM problems in March, 2012 I said I would GLADLY pay for this app if you'd make it work correctly on a BB!  I spent $5 earlier this evening buying something that was called Google GPS Pro for BB which was supposed to work but was a complete peice of garbage and has been removed.)
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 12/16/12 2:50 AM
NOLAKjun,

Here's a thought:

Blackberry/RIM are making Android apps usable on Playbooks and OS10 and this may have been part of the updates. We are all in the dark over this but Google earns from it's maps and the advertising so to cut out a market share would not be in it's interests.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY NOLAKjun BB Bold 12/16/12 3:02 AM
Then why don't you people take bug reports seriously instead of giving all of us the condescending platitudes?  Your posts are all over the net responding to complaints & questions on this topic from the past few days and 90+% of what I've seen was condescending crap telling people to get the right data plan, use the right browser, reset the phone, etc. You were also the respondent to my original complain from May of this year and you told me there was nothing wrong with Google Maps on the BB 9900!  If you're now reversing your prior "holier than thou" stance have the decency to eat a little crow and make up for all the garbage you feed us "stupid users" for whom you obviously have disdain!

Simone,

Because they are the normal reasons for stuff not working and I have never reckoned users are stupid. 50% of them are women which makes them always "right". Something I learned from my wife.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/16/12 11:42 AM
C-man,

The issues raised are valid. If google gave a sh*t about blackberry users, the application would be supported and they would have figured out a long time ago that something was broken, instead of what happened which is that someone who needed the application figured out a way around the problem. (That person posted this fix on crackberry where there are several threads filled with comments from angry users.) Seriously, does google have a single person who maintains gm for bb 7? I doubt it. It's very frustrating for users who have to deal with google's non-existent support for blackberry. There are still a lot of bb 7 devices out there and these devices support touch. Yet gm for the blackberry doesn't support touch. v4.5.3 is ancient. There is no reason why it could not be updated if google wanted to.

Apparently google still hasn't figured out what goodwill is.

There, that's my vent.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY NOLAKjun BB Bold 12/16/12 1:10 PM
Bimmerdriver (and anyone at Google who might care),

The challenges I've had with GM on my 9900 seem to be related to the app's preference for touch interface instead of mouse/pointer interface.  My original bug report in May stated that the ability to "mouse over" accidents, road closures and saved locations and click for details or directions is now gone; the only way I can get accident details (and this is only when the accident icon appears which it doesn't most of the time) is to zoom in VERY close and carefully touch the icon.  Same goes for the directions to saved locations, getting the name or address of a named place on the map, etc.  I cannot begin to tell you how difficult, and DANGEROUS, this touch interface is to navigate when the user is the driver of a moving vehicle trying to find a way around a traffic jam or figure out how to get to an appointment.  I found the interface much easier to use when there was a "center dot" on the screen that could be positioned via trackball/touchpad over an icon to get pop-up details or directions.

Before anyone goes off on me for using my GPS while driving - save it for someone who cares cuz I've been successfully using my phone and GPS while driving for more than a decade and have NEVER had an accident due to it (my only accidents in the past 15 years were caused by other people who weren't paying attention and hit me, usually while I was parked).  Anyone who can drive a stick shift while adjusting a radio, checking mirrors, changing lanes, eating or drinking food from a drive-thru, and manage passengers including small children or pets can certainly manage looking at a map (paper or electronic) in a moving vehicle.

That's my vent. :)

Celeste - I also have Torch 9800, and I can't accept the TOS for v.3 either.  If anyone comes up with a workaround for those of us who have Torch 9800, please do share.  I depend on GoogleMaps to get me around my city via public transport.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Amjed Saffarini 12/16/12 3:59 PM
Hi,

Thanks for this. Worked like a charm.  For my contribution, I was able to do the whole thing OTA.  Following directions:

1. after deleting any version of gmaps,
2. download the zip for v3 onto the SD card using the link in the second post
3. move it to a new folder using the file browser.
4. From the app store, download and install the free (tiny) app unzipme (free)
6. You can then directly click on the zip file in the file browser and it will unzip to the new directory
7. Now if you click on the jad file and try to install, it will give an error. The issue is that the unzipped files have the word google and a little tilde (~) in each of the COD files.
8. To fix this, rename each cod file to take out everything up to and including the ~. What should left is a file that starts with 50909.
9. Now click on the jad file, and v3 will install.  Ignore the prompt for updating to v.4.5 until after you accept the terms
10. After accepting the terms, reboot once to Settle things, then download and install v4.5 from the first post link. It will ask you to overwrite the module and restart.  AftEr a fresh restart, it will be working again like a charm.

Hope this helps, and thanks for the individual contributor's workaround.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/16/12 4:46 PM
Be sure you are downloading using the links in the second post. The original links got mangled when I copied them.

After you download the zip files, unzip them on your pc, then copy the folders onto the sd card on your phone using desktop manager.

Then, go through the steps of deinstalling v4.5.3, installing v3, and finally reinstalling v4.5.3. To do that, use the file manager on the phone to browse to the folders and then click on the jad. It works if you follow the steps.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Katherine Rose 12/16/12 4:58 PM
Unfortunately, as Celeste wrote above, it doesn't work for Torch 9800.  When v.3 runs, I am unable to accept the terms of service: the "decline" button is pre-highlighted, the touch screen won't work, and there's no way to toggle to "accept."  Reinstalling 4.5.3 after installing-but-not-being-able-to-successfully-run v.3 results in the same "serious error" crash.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY MikeTheYokel 12/17/12 1:36 AM
i too use it for when i travel outside the UK (ie when if i used my own android phone, i would get hammered by roaming charges), so when my phone recently locked me out (another story), it my BB bold workphone ended up getting wiped. then tried reinstalling GMaps from the appworld only to find that even when it did eventually open fully, the GPS would no longer work on it and neither did the menu list (all i got when pressing the BB button was an option to 'cancel'. couldnt plot a route, search for a place, nothing. so about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

luckily Bimmerman's workaround does indeed work around the problem. even me with my limited computer skills got it to work first time by connecting it to my laptop as a usb device.

nice one! next time work sends me to ireland or spain, norway etc, i can still find my way around (paper maps are still useful though....if you know where you are on them)

happy now.

Has anyone used bimmerdriver's method on a Blackberry Torch 9800 running OS 6.0 Bundle 2647 and gotten google maps to work?  I copied over the blackberry-47 folder as described above, but I am unable to either scroll over to the "accept" link using my trackpad, or select the "accept" link using my touch screen.  Should I use the blackberry-46 folder, since I am on a older model phone with an older operating system?  Thought I would ask before I try again.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I REALLY miss my google maps.  I used Latitude to keep track of where my family is at.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/17/12 9:29 AM
No idea what's going on. what kind of phone do you have and what version of os? after you copy both folders on to the sd card, remove google maps completely, use the blackberry file manager to browse to the location of the v3 folder, then click on the jad. it should install. during the installation, you can set the permissions, save them and then it should install. Run it once, accept the t&c. then browse to the folder containing v4.5.3 and do the same thing. after that, v4.5.3 should be running.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Katherine Rose 12/17/12 9:48 AM
bimmerdriver - the problem is that those of us [... just me and Celeste, apparently] using Torch 9800 cannot accept the T&C on v.3.  The touch screen becomes non-responsive and there is no way to toggle to accept.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Celeste Haseltine 12/17/12 10:06 AM
Katherine,

I am going to play around with this again tonight and see if I can get it working on my Torch 9800.  For grins, I will try using the blackberry-46 folder vs the blackberry-47 folder, and see if that works, since neither of us are running the OS 7 that most of the other posters on this thread are running.  If that doesn't work, I will see if I can find another version of Google maps between 3.0 and 4.5, and trying installing that first and see if I can accept the terms and conditions.  If I find a way to make it work,I will post and let everyone know.

In the interim, if anyone else on this thread is able to get google maps working again on a Torch 9800 running 6.0 Bundle 2647, please let us know by posting on this thread.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 12/17/12 12:37 PM
The way I did it in steps on a BB9800:
  1. Use the Desktop Manager to delete Google Maps (this is the cleanest way).
  2. Exit the Desktop Manager but don't disconnect the usb/Bluetooth connection.
  3. Extract the V3 file and move it to the BB's SD card.
  4. Eject SD card and phone.
  5. Bring up Media then use the menu to find Explore>Media Card>V3, scroll to bottom and click on JAD which will be the last file.
  6. Install and set the application permissions.
  7. Reboot
  8. From the BB's browser download and install the latest version Google Maps www.google.com/mobile/other/
  9. It warned it would overlay V3 but I went ahead.
  10. Reboot.
  11. Would not recognise Data connection.
  12. Back to steps 3 through 7
  13. Java Exception
  14. Reboot again
  15. Java Exception
  16. Reboot again
  17. Victory and Google Maps opened in 4.5.3
  18. Velcroed cushion to wall and beat head against it.
  19. Cushion burst and little balls of sponge went everywhere.

Best advice: Buy a GPS for yourself and give up on the Vallium.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Celeste Haseltine 12/17/12 1:01 PM
Just to make sure I understand, you did get Google Maps working on your Torch 9800?  If so, how did you get past the need to "accept" the terms and conditions for using google maps.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/17/12 1:08 PM
C-Man,

1. You can either use desktop manager to remove it or you can do it on the phone, both do the same thing.
2-4. If you have desktop manager, you can use it to copy the folders and paste them onto the sd card. Very easy. Then you don't have to mess around with enabling and disabling the usb interface.
8. I didn't try that method, just installed from sd card.
11-16. not sure what happened there, didn't have any errors on my 9900. maybe that's specific to 9800?

Since you said you have contacts in google, have they acknowledged this problem and are they going to fix it?

Cheers,
bimmerdriverr
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 12/17/12 1:59 PM
bimmerdriver,

Google don't know what happened to wreck it but I have a peculiar feeling it was the update to BBM which may have upset everything. As one of the Google Employees said somewhere in these forums they are working on it. These things don't only happen to Blackberry and from what I have seen RIM work hand in glove with Google on a lot of stuff. Unfortunately the effects cannot always be foreseen and RIM (like others) don't give advanced information away to other companies.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 12/17/12 2:05 PM
Celestine,

I got past the acceptance when I did the first install of V3 JAD.

Despite what others think I prefer to use the Desktop Manager to delete apps as it may take longer but the clean up is thorough.

I just kept going at it. This was the second time I have deliberately deleted Google Maps so it could be re-installed. It took longer this time. What I call a "Two coffee job".

If anybody ever asks how somebody gets to be a Top Contributor you can give this as one of the examples.

I am so glad that there is a work around.

I'm still coming up short, though.  I have a BB Curve 9300 with a media card installed.  I'm on a mac and have desktop manager.  I've downloaded and unzipped the v3 file, but I don't know how to get it on my media card or running.   My desktop manager only has options for syncing media.

Can anyone offer suggestions?
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/17/12 7:25 PM
There should be a menu item on the left side called files. That is how you use dm to move files back and forth. if it's not there, check what version of dm are you using. also there is an option in the phone to change the access mode for the sd card. if you connect the phone to the pc, can you see it as a usb device? If so, then try copying the files that way.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Frustration but Hopeful 12/17/12 7:34 PM
I've hooked it up as a usb device.  I see files for BBThumbs.dat, Blackberry, Desktop, mobi_drm and tmp.  Blackberry is the only folder with any folders or files in it.  How do I get GM3 to install?

Thanks for helping me out.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Thanks Bimmerdriver 12/18/12 2:49 AM
Thanks, worked for me within minutes. You'll need a computer and your phone to do this. Also, 3 links have been provided but I only ended up using 2 of the links. The 3rd link (http://dl.google.com/dl/mobile/maps/BlackBerry-47/GoogleMaps.jad) just makes you download something which is already in the 2nd link (http://www.google.com/mobile/hosted/maps/binaries/L1/4.5.3/GoogleMapsPull.zip). You don't need desktop manager either for any of this.
1. Uninstall completely V4 from your phone and do a reboot and start fresh.
2. Now, Download file from https://www.dropbox.com/s/i8w6jymjdvdbch8/GoogleMap-v3.zip to your computer. Unzip it. Now plug in your blackberry, enter password (if you have one) and wait until the little box pops up where it asks if you want to "Play", "Import pictures and videos" or "Open folder to view files". Your option of interest is the "Open folder to view files". Click on that. Once you do that, you'll see various folders (Blackberry, files, fonts, home, start.app are the folders I saw). I went into the "home" folder. Once in this folder I only had one folder called "user" so I went into this. Once you're in "user", you'll see a lot of stuff which is normal. So take the unzipped folder that you have on your computer and copy it into "user".
3. Now unplug your phone. Unplugging is important as the folder you need access to where you saved the file in step 2, only appears on your phone once the phone has been unplugged. So, once unplugged, go to Applications icon on home screen (or wherever it is for you), then go to "Files" icon. Once in there, you'll see 2 folders ("All Files" and "File Folders"). Click on "File Folders", then "Device", then "home", then "user". Now if you remember, it is here that you copied the folder from your computer to your phone into in Step 2. Go into that folder, and find the .jad file and click it and it will make you install V3 of Google Maps. Do that and reboot your phone and now you will have V3 as per normal. But you want the latest version, so lets continue.
4. Now download the file from this link http://www.google.com/mobile/hosted/maps/binaries/L1/4.5.3/GoogleMapsPull.zip to your computer and unzip it so you have the folder. Plug in your phone, and on the phone, go to the exact same location as you did in Step 2 (i.e. Open folder to view files, then home, then user). Once in "user" folder, copy the folder you just unzipped into here.
5. Now unplug your phone again. Just as you did in Step 3, go to Applications, Files, Files Folders, Device, home, user and once in user, find that folder you just copied in (in Step 4). Open that folder and find the .jad file and click on it. This will make you install the latest version of Google Maps and it'll ask if you want to overwrite V3 so click yes. Finish installing, reboot phone and everything should work.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Fratotec 12/18/12 7:28 AM
Thanks for the V3 link.
I installed the v3 version ... but before going to step 4, I opened the v3 version on the device.
There it opens the Terms & Conditions Screen with an error that he can´t load the Documente, but leaves the "agree" option available ( that´s doesn´t happen on the 4.x.x versions ) .
Agreeing to the terms, and the v3 maps opened normally.

After that, I did the OTA install of the latest version via m.google.com ... which installed without problems and rebooted,
After reboot, as the Terms & Conditions were already agreed, the 4.5.3 version opens now nomally.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/18/12 7:58 AM
I don't use usb, but it works. It's another way to do the same thing. Copy the folder onto the phone. Use the files app on the phone to browse to the folder. click on the jad to install.

This was a huge help, need to use maps tomorrow.

Thanks!
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Garry Rivera 12/18/12 9:57 AM
I was able to do everything without a computer on my BB. I downloaded BeamExplorer, a free file explore with zip extractor. I deleted v4.5, rebooted, downloaded the v3 zip, used Beamexplorer to unzip it, used BeamExplorer to locate the jad file, ran it. Then downloaded 4.5 and installed it over v3 aNd everything worked perfect.

I have version 3 working (thinking about sticking with it since GOOG is not going to support maps on the BB os any more)  The 2nd folder includes 4 sub folder each folder has a .jad file.  Are they duplicates?  Do I need to run all 4 .jad files?

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY bimmerdriver 12/18/12 12:28 PM
use the folder named blackberry-47, which is v4.5.3.

Thank you. This worked smoothly on my Curve 9360. Sadly Google does not care about the couple percent (and declining!) of users on blackberries. I don't expect any support, and noticed that they silently removed maps from their blackberry mobile app page.

Dear Bimmerdriver!

Thank you for the issue. In fact, I'm very much looking for a version 3.2.0 of Google Maps.
Previously I used the normal download link from m.google.com/gmm and just replace the latest (4.5.3) digits in the OTA link for 3.2.0 and I could download. Well, not anymore....

Can you help? Everybody is here happy upgrading to 4.5.3 but I dont need to!
I just need the 3.2.0 version.

Maybe your, so to say, source could help?

Thanks!

Victor
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY victor boyko 12/19/12 7:51 AM
Dear Bimmerdriver!

First of all, thank you for this lovely workaround!
I, however, need the old 3.2.0 version of Google Maps for me.
Normally I would download it from m.google.com/gmm, when the site provided the link for 4.5.3 I just replaced the version number in the link and downloaded, well it doesnt work anymore.

Maybe you respectable source could help me with providing a reliable link to 3.2.0 jad?
Thank you!

Victor

Sorry. The only versions that I am aware of are the ones in the post.To be honest, I can't imagine why you would want an older version anyway.

here my step for people who are still fail to make it

1) download all the link shown on 2nd post
2) open all the file and copy all item (eg: cod & .jad file) it to your sd card (look for document folder )
3) disconnect you phone from pc
4) type ( .jad) if you are bb9900 user
5) try all of them..haha , not sure which one i pick
6) run and accept the t&c
7) succeed and enjoy!!

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY victor boyko 12/19/12 1:22 PM
Easy. Two VERY IMPORTANT points:

1. From v.4 Google disabled the ability to point to any building to find out its address. Is the message "Unable to get address" familiar to you? :)
2. I really need the ability to put a star to any given place on a map, even with no towns around and rename it. That was easily done in v.3. I'm an environmental photographer, so I location scout A LOT, and that was very helpful - like putting a star where I'm at and renaming into "need to get here at dusk". How is that done in Google Maps v.4.5.3?

I used to do it when in the location by finding myself and then getting the directions to somewhere else and once it was in, as long as I was signed in, I could star it.

Just got a new 9930 and been reading through the string to see how to fix the problem.

As an FYI to the group, if you go to m.google.com they no longer have maps as an app you can select. Hope this means they're working on solving the problem

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY a-noor 12/20/12 2:00 AM
I use bb 9380 touch screen (orlando) and have same problem like some Torch's users mentioned before. It was can't accept t&c after gmaps v3 installed. I think that problem is coming because the v3 installer which given by bimmerdriver just solving bb surepress/keypad type (like bb 9360, etc), and it doesn't work on bb touch screen type which have more wide in pixels. In short, I have hypotheses that it's need different installer between touchscreen and surepress type.

Because gmaps 4.5.3 direct download on google apps site still make gmaps having trouble.  So, I try to get the older version (I use 4.5.1), and install on my bb. Fortunately this version still works in my bb.
And believe or not, when I upgrade my gmaps to 4.5.3.. My gmaps still haven't trouble!

Here's steps to solve the gmaps trouble with bb touchscreen series:

1. Uninstall any gmaps which installed on your bb.
2. Get this version of gmaps v4.5.1, and install it (OTA) http://mybbota.com/files/5476/2ed2228992f5a23829acd7a4c1151b08.jad
3. After install v4.5.1, it seems you doesn't need restart your bb (restart if you get restart message).
4. Accept the t&c.
5. After v4.5.1 works, you must be suggested by gmaps to upgrade your gmaps to latest version, maybe better you ignore first.
6. Go to 'help' option on gmaps, then choose 'upgrade to new version', and you will directing to google maps download site.
7. Install OTA (v4.5.3), restart, and voila! You get the latest gmaps works on your blackberry device.

I hope it's works on your Torch and other bb touchscreen device. Thanks to bimmerdriver for inspiring my problem solving way.

Thanks so much for fixing my most-used app! I was about ready to switch my trusty Bold 9700 for an Android or iOS phone. Maps stopped working for me when I installed an OS upgrade sent by T-Mobile.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 12/20/12 9:22 AM
Celeste,

Not sure if it will help but 4.5.2 is available from http://google-maps-blkbry.en.softonic.com/blackberry
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Celeste Haseltine 12/20/12 9:46 AM
Thanks.  The link you provided above only downloads a jad file, not a zip file.  When I attempted to install google maps using the jad file I downloaded, it threw and "invalid cod" error and crashed.  I am guessing that the jad file was looking for the remaining cod files to download from somewhere, and couldn't find them.  If you know where I can download 4.5.2 as a zip file, which would include the cod files along with the jad, let me know.  I have done a google search, and so far, have not found 4.5.2 anywhere.

Thanks again!
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Celeste Haseltine 12/20/12 10:10 AM
Gives the same 404 error even when I try to download it OTA using the blackberry browser.   I think the file was removed.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY a-noor 12/20/12 4:45 PM
You can try download v4.5.1 through this site first (I was check it and still exist) http://mybbota.com/download/5476 , then click the green download icon. So, you will be directing to new OTA download link.

It's must be know, that I was try to install the v4.5.2 before, but it doesn't work, still stuck at t&c problem. So, better if you try with v4.5.1.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Katherine Rose 12/20/12 8:58 PM
SUCCESS!  Celeste and other Torch 9800 users, here we go.  Check out a-noor's post above.  I went to http://mybbota.com/download/5476 on my Torch, clicked the green download button, and installed 4.5.1.  Running the program, I was able to accept the T&C, and confirmed that the application was working normally.  I then went to the Google mobile site and downloaded 4.5.3.  Phone rebooted, and I ran the application.  Did not have to accept any T&C... it just started working merrily.  Did a few tests, and all is good.  HUGE weight off my shoulders.  Googlemaps is the only map and directions application that is fed by my city's very complicated web of public transit.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY SkyOpti 12/21/12 4:52 AM
Hi Folks,

Update for all of you:
I don't know why, but this morning the T&C issue has disappeared.
To explain: I am a BES administrator and for up to two weeks I  pushed the actual version of google maps via bes to our 650 blackberrys (Bold 9900). Suddenly the T&C issue appears as described here.
Today, I try to push the normal bes paket again as I pushed it normally and what should I say: It works! No workaround needed anymore.
Seems google has done something at the backend.

Maybe, there are other out there who can confirm this?
Best regards,
Olli

Hi, what folder do i copy the files into on the blackberry? When I connect a USB to my laptop, there are many folders in the blackberry i can extract to, but whatever folder i copy the files into, i can not see on my blackberry. sorry, can you please be a bit more specific on where to place the files, and then how to view the app on the bb?
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 12/22/12 9:17 AM
Andrew,

Once extracted you can copy it to near anywhere preferably on the SD card but even that is not a strict rule. Go to Media and then use (if you just bring the Media home page to the screen it will do) the menu to find Explore - Media Card you will be able to find the JAD file.

It seems like Google maps is back for the blackberry again. I was able to download and install it with no problems today December 26th 2012. It seems like Blackberry decided to pay Google dues to keep maps going. I can keep Blackberry for a few more months now before I switch.

Thanks to all for your help! I FINALLY got it to work! Oh, how I have missed Google Maps since I got a new Blackberry (Bold 9930). I also connected my BB to a PC and loaded it that way. Thanks again!
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Luke Rich 1/2/13 7:17 PM
Ok, this workaround totally worked for me. I'm on a BB 9780 running OS 6.0 bundle 3049 (6.0.0.706)

Some possibly helpful clarifications:
1) Download the files for v.3 and v.4.5.3 as indicated by bimmerdriver
2) Unzip each into a separate folder
3) Copy these folders onto your SD card
4) Go to the media section of your Blackberry home screen
5) Press the Option/Blackberry key and int eh popup menu select "explore"
6) Select the Jad file in the V. 3 folder and proceed with installation
7) "Explore" again and, in the v4.5.3 floder (it says "Pull"), choose the Jad file that is inside the "BlackBerry-47" folder; proceed with the installation [this can be confusing because there are a bunch of folders with jad files in them; i used the "47" one and it worked]
8) Reboot
9) You may be asked to set permissions. Do so and you're done.

Also, I wanted to note that though I used the download links provided by bimmerdriver I did stumble upon this Google link that seems to offer some potentially relevant files. Maybe some of the hard cores folks in this group will have a use for them or can otherwise explain them to the rest of us.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Mosh Berman 1/2/13 10:24 PM
Yes! This works perfectly! Thank you!

Download the zip files, extract the files, copy to sd card, locate folders on your bb, after uninstalling V4.5.3 first, open the V3 folder and install by running the .jad file, next in the "blackberry-47" folder locate the .jad file and run it. V4.5.3 will reinstall (say yes to replacing file called "google maps") and device will need to be restarted. once bb restarts run g maps. set permissions, save and wait. this took about five minutes for me before g maps was running so be patient. after waiting, it works perfectly.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY sam Iam 1/25/13 9:48 AM
The above worked for me. I typed up instructions as I found it a bit confusing (see below). The references to folders are to the folders at the download links in this thread above. I have also placed the necessary files on a dropbox link below. I tried to put this up as a torrent but it's my first torrent and I'm not sure if it worked, but I include the magnet link in any case.

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:7385889D392282ACF10BAD5449365DACBAD48570&dn=Fix%20for%20BlackBerry%20Google%20Maps%204.5.3.zip&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.openbittorrent.com%3a80%2fannounce&tr=http%3a%2f%2ftracker.beeimg.com%3a6969%2fannounce

This fix worked for me, I'm on a BB9780 with OS6

1) Download the files for v.3 and v.4.5.3 as indicated by bimmerdriver

2) Unzip each into a separate folder

3) Copy these folders onto your SD card

4) IMPORTANT: Go to the "Media" section of your Blackberry home screen

5) Press the Option/Blackberry/Menu key and in the popup menu select "explore" [NOTE: The explore option will not appear if you are not in the "Media" section]

6) Select the Jad file in the V. 3 folder and proceed with installation

7) Launch the app (should be in the "Downloads" section), accept the terms and make sure it works.

8) "Explore" again and, in the v4.5.3 folder (it says "Pull"), choose the Jad file that is inside the "BlackBerry-47" folder; proceed with the installation.

9) Reboot

10) You may be asked to set permissions. Do so and you're done.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY YLord 1/26/13 1:37 PM
Thanks - this also worked for me. I was/am pretty much dependent on Gmaps, so am really glad its back and running.

I've had a frustrating time after i had to do a wipe on my 9700, where I though getting all my old apps back would just be a tolerable chore.
However, being directed to the google 'download for android os' from m.google.com/maps, etc and whatever other download sites really had my goat.

Your suggestions worked fine - I just downloaded just from the last link, copied to a folder via the laptop - found it on the BB (had a job it)-- and got it to install just fine.

Thanks again. Much obliged.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY fuzzyk786 1/29/13 4:17 AM
Thanks to everyone - installation on my 9900 was successful!
However, I get an error message "Network Unavailable. You need data connection and some Blackberry devices need reconfiguration to work properly. Please visit www.google.co.uk/gmm on your computer for more info..."
Needless to say, this points to a Page not found - 404 error!

I have the BIS data package and all other apps, browser, e-mails, etc work fine, so I'm baffled as to why the GM v4.5.3 App is still looking for a data connection.  Blackberry (RIM) are equally unhelpful on this.
Anyone had this before?
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 1/29/13 6:48 AM
fuzzyk

Find the Host Routing Table and use the menu to Register Now. Open the message. You may need to pull the battery for ten minutes at least if it doesn't work and see what happens then.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY fuzzyk786 1/30/13 12:13 AM
C Man

Thanks - just done that and battery pulled for 15 minutes - but still the same error message:"Network Unavailable. You need data connection and some Blackberry devices need reconfiguration to work properly...."
My other apps, browser, e-mails, etc that need BIS all work fine - it's just the GM v4.5.3 that is not behaving!

Which OS and have you updated to the latest version using BlackBerry - Updates

Which service supplier?
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY fuzzyk786 1/30/13 4:31 AM
C Man

OS is 7.1.0 Bundle 1149 and the 9900 device reports it as being up to date.
STC is the supplier - with pretty decent service as far as Data Services on all my other apps goes.

Fuzzy,

We're into a guesswork area. I'm going to suggest you delete the app completely and use the browser to go to http://google.com/mobile/other to download the app from there. Make sure to check the security settings before downloading.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY CRMS 2/13/13 3:33 AM
I've got G Maps 4.5.3 on a Curve 9300 OS6.0, and had Maps installed for nearly 2 years.  I now find that it won't accept my Google account when I login - I get a useful "login failed" at the bottom.  So cannot access my maps etc.  Used to work perfectly so deleted, reinstalled and restarted G maps, but no change.
Can login to other Google apps inc mail.
Have no problem with the installation and maps works well except no login in.
Any ideas out there??
Thanks.

CRMS,

If this is the latest version your 9300 can handle try using the Captcha page from a pc or even from the Browser of your phone as it should give you a ten minute window of opportunity as long as you have made all the other security protocols Allow.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY MANU KAPILA 3/10/13 10:04 AM
This solution works till V3. however once you install the 4.5.3 this goes back to the same error and it stops working .... so one has to stick to V3 only. The moment you run .jad of 4.5.3 the try and login, it logs in but logs you out in two seconds.
WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY MANU KAPILA 3/10/13 10:46 AM
The issue is a bit different.

The version 4.5.3 does get installed but the latitude and sign in doesn't work.

So to ensure that u can sign and use latitude also one needs to stick to V3. The moment u upgrade the same problem comes back. It signs in but in a few seconds it signs out.

If one tries through JOIN LATITUDE the spinning wheels carries on and on.

So one would need to decide what is more important for ones usuage.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY MANU KAPILA 3/10/13 11:22 AM
Tried all combinations and even tried other versions of GM v4.4 etc.
if one needs to sign in only the V3 works. All others are a waste of time, they just sign in and sign out.
I have tried captcha that also doesn't work.
So folks stick to v3 if you want to use latitude

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY zachgeo 3/13/13 9:41 PM
I downloaded v3 and got it to work just fine on my Torch 9800.  Get all the files, including the jad file, into a single folder on your card. For some reason, I had trouble getting the jad into my new folder -- I finally copied it and pasted it in there.  Worked like a charm after that.  Unfortunately, the v4 layover just got me back to square one, with Google immediately signing me out.  I am uninstalling v4 again and I'm just going to run v3 (which kept me signed in).  Its clunky, but has most of the features of v4.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Nicholas Haffen 3/15/13 4:34 PM
Did this twice now and it's still not working on a Bold 9930. Followed the directions exactly with no issue. v3 worked fine, but maybe I need to try logging in with v3? Will try and post if that helps.

Anybody know if this works for the Mar 2013 problem? I plan to try it but don't have access to a desktop for a few days. I uninstalled what I had and installed again from maps.google.com I have 4.5.3 now, and I'm fairly confident this is what I had before too. About a week ago it started suddenly signing out 2 -5 seconds after signing in. The reinstall did nothing except clear the stars I had marked while signed out.

I followed the steps given and got V3 to work.  But it not being as satisfactory, installed 4.5.3 from the BlackBerry-47 folder from my SD card.  However, problem re-started!  Had to uninstall everything and switch back to V3.  I guess I will have to live with V3 for now but can you advice how you got 4.5.3 work?
I used to GoogleMaps.jad in the Blackberry-47 folder obtained from GoogleMapsPull.zip.  Should I try from the 3rd link?
Thanks

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Spence98311 3/22/13 3:45 AM
I have the same issue.  Tried reloading several times.  V3 works, but doesn't allow me to sync my starred locations, which is what I really need.  Load v4.5.3 and it logs out in a few seconds.  Maps seem to work ok, just can't login.  Been about two weeks now.  One day while I was playing with this, logged in to my google account on my computer, and got a message about 'someone trying to log in to my account'.  It was from my phone.  It gave me an option to allow and login within 10 minutes to 'authorize' this.  It didn't work.  I haven't been able to locate that security setting since then.

The big question is:  is there a security setting on our google accounts that is blocking this out?  I haven't received that warning message again and cannot locate any settings for such.  And still can't login to google maps.

I try the steps twice. I could join latitude in V3 then reinstall v4.5.3. For once, I could join latitude but when i try to sync starred item, I kicked out by google, then never join latitude again. What  the shame!
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY ChicagoMike75 3/28/13 12:34 PM
3-28-13.  No fix.  Old google maps is just so out dated.  I guess the solution for this is to pre-order a Samsung Galaxy S4, instead of getting a Z10 and ending up with these kind of problems.  Chase bank is dropping the Blackberry App in April, but it will still work for iPhone and Android users.  I could go on and on about how apps don't work or aren't available for my BB Torch.  Why should I trust the Z10 anymore.  Goodbye, Blackberry.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Marvin Heng 3/30/13 12:19 AM
Hi bimmerdriver, I google for some solution to this Google Maps login issues and came across this topic. I tried you solutions:

(1) uninstall 4.5.3 and reboot.
(2) Copy both versions into separate folder in sdcard.
(3) Run jad in ver 3, managed to click on Accept' link to enter application, then exit.
(4) Run jad in ver 453 (folder 47), answer 'yes' to replace the installed version and reboot.

After the device restart, I tried the Google Maps login and still hit the same problem, Application logins for 2 seconds and logged me out immediately. Is this Google's way of not supporting BlackBerry version anymore? I also find it odd that Google no longer have the ota link for BlackBerry device.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Sarah Hiscoke 3/31/13 3:10 PM
Thanks ever so much for sharing this, we had come to rely on maps and latitude, and it was so annoying when it stopped working. Followed your instructions and successfully got v3 working.  Very apprehensive about then trying to upgrade it to v4.5.3 (having got it working, i don't want to risk mucking it up again!). Bit the bullet and  followed instructions to upgrade to v4.5.3 , but it has the same issue as before, saying i''ve signed out of latitude.  Will now repeat the delete maps step, reinstall v3 but think this time i'll leave it there!

Would have appreciated a warning from Google or Blackberry beforehand - or if it was a surprise to them following an "upgrade", at least an acknowledgement that something had gone wrong and that they were working on it. Just being left in the dark, googling it and finding that loads of other people are in the same boat, is not good customer service!

I tried it out...Didn't work for me on my Bold 5 9790 Ravi Nadpara 4/1/13 2:25 PM
I tried whole the procedure twice... Procedures were successful and no errors were displayed during the processes..

But when I tried to sing in , Again the same error was displayed "you are signed out from your Google account"

even I tried by wiping the phone... but nothing worked ...

Re: I tried it out...Didn't work for me on my Bold 5 9790 Spence98311 4/6/13 3:11 PM
OK, I finally got it to work.  Tried the procedure and had the same problems every time.  I'm roaming outside of my normal home network too.  Anyway, I turned of the wireless and tried logging in via WiFi.  It worked.  When I switched back to wireless, its still working.

As I stated in my first post on this, I did receive a security message from Google one time about 'someone trying to connect to my account' which was my phone.  So I think someone added some security somewhere that is causing this glitch.

Mine is now working.  Good luck.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Marvin Heng 4/6/13 7:00 PM
No need for all this steps already. I think the problem already solved by Google. I am able to log in since yesterday evening without any problem, running ver 4.5.3.

Direct download LINK to my DropBox:

I know this a yr old post. I am having an issue with my BB 9860 OS 7.1. When i try to get the google maps app from maps.google.com the website gives me a 404 Error. Hello C man
I dont have an issue with Google maps currently .. but faced similar issue ~ last month when i re-installed my "nuked" BB :)
The above link you pasted also gives the same 404 error when clicking "google maps"
I got it fixed by going to
www.google.ie/mobile/other

On clicking "Google maps", it goes to location
http://dl.google.com/dl/mobile/maps/blackberry-47/GoogleMaps.jad

and downloads successfully from there :)

@Sheldon, let me know if this works.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Deepu Thomas 7/29/13 8:51 AM
BTW, can anyone tell me how to download the jad file present in location
http://dl.google.com/dl/mobile/maps/blackberry-47/GoogleMaps.jad

So that i can install this safely in future, even if this SW is not available online :)

I tried using Firefox/IE to download but gives me a 5 KB download file where as on BB it shows that the size is 1.5 MB :S

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Rafael 1/1/14 11:07 AM
Well, occasionally I have the same problem, but I don´t think it has to do with a particular version of GM...
Anyway, here is the link to download the .alx file that allows you to install the v.3.  https://sites.google.com/site/documentoscrea/GoogleMaps_pc.alx
The file is to be used with the BB Desktop software (Applications>Import Files)

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY lorena frazzlove 1/1/14 12:25 PM
Rafael,
I don't understand how that works?
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY NOLAKjun BB Bold 1/1/14 1:38 PM
I followed the link and downloaded the alx file but desktop importer doesn't recognize or thinks it's corrupted, can't open from desktop either and I can't find any other search results that include a downloadable V3 file.

C-Man and Bimmerdriver - I cannot believe that I am STILL having this problem after my device was wiped and GM was reinstalled in early Dec. 2013.  I've tried all the "fixes" on this workaround thread and others to no avail (don't know if v3 fix still works cuz I can't find v3 download).  Do either of you have a working link to a usable v3 download file OR, better yet, are BB and Google ever going to fix this problem??  I'm still using my now 2 yr old BB Bold 9900 7.1 bundle 2435 (v 7.1.0.862, Platform 5.1.0.622), running a newly installed copy of GM 4.5.3 (#4674) Web, Platform:  Blackberry-9900_v4_7 with all permissions set to Allow.  Now what?
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Rafael 1/1/14 2:21 PM

On your computer, run the BlackBerry Desktop program, then go to Applications > Import files. Then locate the GoogleMaps_pc.alx file and click Open. That launches the process of installation, and if all went well the app will be in your BB. (Actually the .alx file itself doesn’t install the app, but it generates a “GoogleMaps_pc.cod” file, that is who really is going to do the job)
There are many tutorials in the internet about loading applications via
BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY NOLAKjun BB Bold 1/1/14 3:19 PM
I'm sorry Rafael, I guess my original statement of "downloaded the alx file but desktop importer doesn't recognize or thinks it's corrupted, can't open from desktop either" wasn't clear so allow me to clarify.

I downloaded the .alx file to my computer hard drive and followed the the desktop import instructions originally provided by utilizing the Applications/Import Files function in Blackberry Desktop Software Version 6.1.0.36. When the steps are completed and the file starts to load on the computer screen I get the following error message:  "There was an error importing files.  No additional applications can be found.  Your file might contain applications that already exist in the application list, are not compatible for your device, or have errors."  This message displays when GM 4.5.3 is installed and when there is NO Google Maps app of any version on the device.  I also tried to open the file from my computer but the file type is unrecognized and not able to be processed.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY Rafael 1/1/14 3:50 PM
I'm sorry, I'm afraid I don´t have an answer to that...Do you see the app GM 4.5.3 listed in the application list? If so perhaps you have to remove it first...

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY cxiro 1/29/14 12:23 PM
The workarounds won't fix the base problem - SSL authentication.
That is why all the Google Map apps are gone for all the other platforms. - if you want 'My Maps', they want you to user the Browser version.  Problem is, this requires a constant data connection, more so that the app.

Found this on Google's Help for Maps . . .looks like this is not just a Blackberry thing . . .

Can’t rate, review, or save places

If you're using Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Symbian or Android Google Maps version 5.3 and below, you won't be able to save (star), rate, or review places in Google Maps.

  • Save places: You can’t save your favorite places and access them later.
  • Rate and review: You’re unable to rate places or write a review for them.

Google Maps uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to encrypt information such as search activities and login information. Since SSL is not supported on Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Symbian, and Google Maps Android version 5.3 and below, features that require you to be signed in are not available.

So the excuse is that Blackberry and the others don't support SSL, so you can't log in and transmit 'personal information' if it is not encrypted.

Of course, this USED to work, and you logged in when using Latitude (before they dumped it).  BTW, when I logged into my Symbian Nokia, which I hadn't done in a while, the 'starred' places showed up for a moment before it logged me out. :(

Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY The C Man ((mobile laureate)elder advisor) 2/4/14 7:37 PM
cxiro,

If you do this from a wi-fi area then it doesn't use any data from your allowance.
Re: WORKAROUND FOR BROKEN GOOGLE MAPS ON BLACKBERRY NOLAKjun BB Bold 2/22/14 9:33 PM
1 - C Man - Google maps is almost useless over wifi, I need it to work in my car when I'm driving and following the directions it provides.
2 - The basic app functionality works (search, save favorite place, directions, etc.) even though I can't log into my account but it's a REAL pain to re-save over 100 favorite places every time I have to reinstall this app for whatever reason.
3 - I save new favorites all the time and I know from past experience that if this login issue is ever fixed I'm going to loose all the new favorites I've saved while not logged into my account.
4 - If the folks at Google ever get around to fixing this it would be nice if they also allowed the users to merge their "profiles" or whatever Google calls the user ID associated with the phone so the faves saved without logging in aren't lost.

Simone,

I wish I could give you better news but until Blackberry sales increase it's doubtful Google will support it any more than they do now.

C Man,

Are you telling me the problem I'm having with Google Maps isn't correctable and isn't going to be fixed?

I'm starting to think it's time to dump GM.  Thanks for the confirmation of my suspicions.

Simone,

It's not supposed to work over wi-fi in a car. It has to have a data connection.

Have you tried Waze?

I created a map for an upcoming trip in Google Maps and was hoping I could have the places available in the Maps application in my Blackberry 9800.

None of the workarounds I found worked for me.

You disappointed me in the most meaningless ways Google, first I couldn't use text messages authentication for months because I'm in Argentina, now I can't use the full extend of the Maps application because I'm a Blackberry user.

What's next?

Diego,

You can use the Browser to open the Desktop version of Google Maps which will at least allow you to view it in the same way.

I tried that too.

It may be a problem with the browser in the 9800 but opening maps.google.com takes me to the search page, and clicking the "Classic" button in the bottom gives me a 404 error trying to open maps.google,com/webhp?nomo=1&hl=es.

C Man,

According to the Waze website they don't support BB so I haven't pursued it any further. I've seen a few posts about "sideloading" versions of GM meant for other platforms but I don't know what that means or if it would work for Waze or GM on my BB 9900.

I was considering upgrading to a Q10 but it appears GM ID login doesn't work on that either and according to the reviews I've seen that model doesn't have I/O functionality for zoom and lacks a trackpad making it an entirely touch screen UI that I just can't imagine using while driving.

As of now it appears I'm going to be forced to give up BB for good (after 15 yrs) unless I can find a "new" 9900 to replace my 2 yr old device which is dying.  :(

NOLAK,

I have mine on BB10's.

Are you able to log into your google maps account to access your saved places from the BB10?  How do you manage zooming in and out?  The reviews I read said the I/O keys and other keyboard shortcuts were disabled on the BB10.

Nolak,

I have Google Maps on the BB10's but honestly don't think they are much use at the moment. I'm sticking with Waze and hoping Google don't interfere with it too much.

CMan,

Are you able (and willing) to provide instructions on how to get Waze to work on a BB?  I checked the website and found no support for BB with no plan to make it available.

Thanks for all the info and assistance!
