| Google Earth update pop-up | Peter Van Erp | 19/08/16 15:54 | I just started get a pop up "Google Earth update helper wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this". It pops up while I'm browsing in Chrome, in a typical Mac style Admin graphic. MacPro OS 10.9.5 I suspect phishing, although it rejected a spurious password. I have never seen this in many years of Google Earth. Is there a way to stop it? | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Rezwan Razani | 19/08/16 16:19 | I get the same thing. According to another string (which for some reason I can't reply to) you check with this page to see if you're updated https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Earth (it tells you the latest update), and if not, update through the update page. My app seems updated, so I don't see why the updater is popping up at all. Also, I don't use it, so why would it update. Why today? 8/19/2016. Was something released today? | ||

But first, it looks like nice light on the clouds outside the window. I'm going to go walk on the Earth a few steps. Thanks again for your help.

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | E Kennedy | 19/08/16 16:54 | Thanks for the info, Alchemist - it just happened to me today for the first time. But, if it's a "well-known" bug why hasn't it been fixed? After all, it's over a year since the last update (May 2015)? Are the constant crashes also well-known? | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | steveplatz | 19/08/16 16:59 | I started getting the popup today and I don't have Google Earth installed on my system. I am not even using Chrome. This is surely suspicious and I would not enter your admin password in the form. | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Alchemist251 | 19/08/16 17:07 | Hi Shannon, I just fixed the link. I don't have a Mac so I don't know if that pop up is OK or not. Be very cautious. I'll see if I can ask someone. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/maps/google-earth/ecqO_pffcL8 is a good link. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Fernando Vallejo | 19/08/16 17:39 | Yup, same issue here from today 20 Aug. 2016. Looks totally fishy... I wonder if it's some spyware or virus causing this unexpected prompt, or if it really is the google earth updater. In my opinion, there should be an option to turn off automatic updates. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Rezwan Razani | 19/08/16 18:01 | OK, so I went to uninstall, per these - https://support.google.com/earth/answer/21955?hl=en - directions: Mac:
Additionally, if you'd like to remove all of the Google Earth components from your Mac, please follow these steps:
The second part (Library) was easy to delete, but attempting to delete GoogleEarth.app gives me a prompt Why do I need a password to remove it? The Google Chrome and Google Drive apps just let me drag them to trash, no problem. Please confirm that removing Google Earth is normally accompanied by one's Finder.app asking for one's password. Thanks! Anyway, I've put all the Library stuff for Google Earth into the trash and emptied the trash. Will see if prompt still occurs. Thanks again, Rezwan
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | CloseToTheBeach | 19/08/16 18:04 | Well, note that I uninstalled google earth and the problem popped up, literally while writing this message, and I'm having problems like clicking a link, and having the link not open so it's presenting like a virus- I cant seem to find it either.... so bye bye, Google Earth! And bye bye, Chrome! let's see if that helps- seems to be fine when I use safari only so please see if you are having the related click on a link, and it opens up someting else problem... thanks- no resolution in sight. | Re: Google Earth update pop-up | drGreene | 19/08/16 18:12 | Both myself and my work associate are getting the same pop-ups all day today on our iMacs. I definitely do not use Google Earth and he does not even use Chrome (or any other Google product for that matter). This definitely seems to be spam and I hope that someone quickly posts a solution for removing whatever is causing it! | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Erik Blohm-Gagné | 19/08/16 18:14 | I also started seeing this message today. I don't have Google Earth installed on my machine, though I did still have some associated folders in my Library. I have since deleted them. This is more than suspicious enough for me to run a virus scan, which is currently ongoing. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | FullMetalBitch | 19/08/16 18:15 | Does no one have a solution? It's doing it every 15 minutes or so. I don't have Google Earth installed at all. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | striatic | 19/08/16 18:16 | I am having this issue and when i went to check if Google Earth was even installed, it wasn't. I did have Google Earth installed in the past and i do have Chrome and also the ancient "Google Updater" app that when I click on claims it is no longer needed, tries to uninstall itself and then asks for a Finder password to do this. Looks like we aren't the only people: I cancelled the update without entering my password, installed Google Earth from Google directly .. and then later the prompt returned even though i had just made a fresh Google Earth Install without it having been there before. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Steven.Bojangles | 19/08/16 18:17 | Same thing here, it's been happening for more than an hour. | Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Alan Zulch | 19/08/16 18:26 | I've got the same issue, and I am using Safari, not Chrome. I tried re-installing Google Earth, and still got the pop-up. I tried deleting GE and all its files, and still get the pop-up. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Todd Jonz | 19/08/16 18:27 | I, too, am seeing the pop-up hourly even though I do not have Google Earth installed. Followed the instructions for un-installing Google Earth anyway and found no sign that it had ever been installed. Poking around the file system I found this: ~/Library/Caches/com.google.SoftwareUpdate/Downloads/com.Google.GoogleEarthPlugin.intel_7.1.5.1557 Creation date/time is today around the time the pop-ups started to appear. Now, as Glenda inquired of Dorothy, we must ask, "Are you a good witch or a bad witch?" Unix 'file' command identifies it as a "bzip2" file. Investigating further... | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | dm73435 | 19/08/16 18:42 | I had something similar to this as well, except there was no indication of what it was for. | Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Identifier1 | 19/08/16 18:44 | Dear all, Do NOT enter your password! Do not authorise changes by the purported 'Google Earth Update Helper'. This seems VERY suspicious/suspect. It only started today. It is not a 'well-known' bug. (I think Alchemist251 might've been thinking of something else.) Just keep pressing cancel until someone figures out what's going on. Be careful. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Time Lord | 19/08/16 18:48 | Hi, I seem to be getting the same prompt asking for credential as well. Google Earth Pro doesn't ask for this while uninstalling. Yes, normally this prompt doesn't show up, but I think while uninstalling certain other Apps this shows as well (can't recall which). If you are having any issues while uninstalling Google Earth, then try uninstalling from the command line : 1) Open Terminal (Command + Space and Enter "Terminal" in the resultant search box) 2) Enter : sudo rm -R /Applications/Google\ Earth.app Thanks. | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | nmgeomac | 19/08/16 18:57 | Yes, there the little sucker is in Disk Utility. It seems to be a mounted virtual disk with an install for Goggle Earth, BUT it does not show up on the desktop. Click on it in Disk Utility and force quit. Restart, now see if it shows up again. Goggle and Adobe do take liberties, don't they? Thanks Bojangles for the tip. Oops, dialog box just popped up again. And it is back in Disk Utility. Shows up as an install ap for Goggle Earth. Still working on it | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Alan Zulch | 19/08/16 19:01 | When the pop up occurs you can run Disk Utility and see that a Disk Image is mounted titled "Apple UDIF read-only compressed bzip2 media". Within it is another nested Disk Image titled Google Earth. Lower in the window you can see the Mount Point of the latter, which for me is in the "Private" folder (which is hidden by default you can reveal it by typing in Spotlight): /private/tmp/KSAction.(and then a series of letters and numbers that change each time it mounts). I found this folder and this file and removed the file to the trash. Instantly the Disk Images disappeared, naturally, and I hoped a restart would reveal this took care of the problem. But the pop-up arrived again. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Time Lord | 19/08/16 19:02 | Hi, I am unable to find this file..., only "google.keystone". I think the elevation is required during uninstall as it needs to kill some background processes if the dialog pops up while uninstalling I've not seen this pop-up in the three months I've had the software installed for anything other than uninstalling Google Earth. You could try this and see if it increases the delay : To change how often Google Software Update checks for updates:
where Note: The maximum interval is 24 hours. Thanks.
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Todd Jonz | 19/08/16 19:03 | DANGER, WILL ROBINSON, DANGER!!! The Unix 'file' command identifies the decompressed version of the alleged plug-in file I referred to in my earlier post as an x86 boot sector. Google Earth has no business modifying boot sectors. Red flag! DO NOT AUTHORIZE THIS UPDATE!!! IMHO this is definitely a boon. The only question remaining in my mind is whether it's my system that's been exploited or Google's software update mechanism. Hoping it's the latter... | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Balivernes Bergeron | 19/08/16 19:07 | I stupidly entered my password before having second thoughts, and checked in this forum. How can I know if I am infected by anything? I found the below as updated files in the main Google folder of my library. Time stamp seems to correspond to time I entered password in the box pop up (though I opened Google Earth in the seconds after to check for update mentions and that might also have impacted those files). Screen capture attached. Does this look genuine Google? | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Donna Herinya | 19/08/16 19:11 | Sorry I can't help—just here to add myself to the list of affected Mac users. Started late this afternoon EST on my desktop Mac at work, and now the home iMac is doing the same thing. First comes the popup that "installer" wants to make changes, then after canceling that one, the Google Earth Update Helper pop up comes up. I do NOT have Google Earth installed. I do NOT see any Google Earth volumes listed in Disk Utility. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Blarch | 19/08/16 19:11 | I believe setting the frequency to "0" means "never update". If this doesn't stop the popups, they aren't coming from the Google update agent. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Katie Alvin | 19/08/16 19:12 | Having the same problem. Went to ~/Library... as suggested by @Todd Jonz and found the file. It was one minute younger than the Google Drive updater in the same directory. Wondering if it's something getting downloaded at the same time. I'm going to uninstall Google Drive as well. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Blarch | 19/08/16 19:14 | Try typing " defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0" to the terminal app to tell the updater to never update. If that doesn't stop it, it's not really the Google updater... | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Alchemist251 | 19/08/16 19:16 | I completely agree with Todd about this. I wouldn't fill out anything in that pop up!! | Re: Google Earth update pop-up | David Ory | 19/08/16 19:21 | I started having this issue about 2 hours ago. Since I never use Google Earth anymore, I uninstalled it, but the pop-up kept coming back. Found this website - http://applehelpwriter.com/2014/07/13/how-to-remove-googles-secret-update-software-from-your-mac/ - that seems to indicate it's part of Chrome and outlines a way to stop the updater and another way to remove it completely. I've gone the route of stopping the updater by setting the time interval to 0 through Terminal a few minutes ago, so hopefully that will end the pop-ups. | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Reese8 | 19/08/16 19:25 | It's happening to me, too, even after I manually reinstalled Google Earth from the website. Fortunately, I was immediately suspicious the first time and haven't entered my password (and if whatever probably-malware this is didn't need my password to get up to whatever no good it's programmed to, I don't see why it would reveal itself by asking), but it's still annoying. And I'm concerned that there might be things it does even without my password. | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | thebeatlestoday | 19/08/16 19:29 | Also experiencing this, and I do have a Mac with Google Chrome and Google Earth. Haven't typed in my password thankfully. I'm wondering if this is related to other adware... Has anyone else had malware/adware issues recently? I had some adware on Chrome, which still isn't resolved. (Nothing major - when I restart Chrome, a new tab will open advertising a game. This only happens once every few weeks.) | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Julie Cidell | 19/08/16 19:32 | I don't have Google Earth or Chrome on my machine, and I'm getting the same "update" box. It auto-fills in my first and last name, not my username. There's nothing to uninstall, and nothing visible in Disk Utility. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | michaelngm30 | 19/08/16 19:33 | This annoying popup started for me today too. I had installed GE a couple days ago, and this popup came up, so I mistakenly gave it my password. Then it kept on popping up, so I uninstalled GE. No difference. I used CleanApp to hopefully delete all bits and pieces of GE, and rebooted. Still getting the popup. I think this is bogus, and likely not from Google. Some spyware I bet. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Reese8 | 19/08/16 19:34 | I'm not aware of any malware or adware issues on my machine recently, and I've had Sophos Anti-Virus for a while just in case. Then again, Sophos doesn't seem to be noticing this, either. Hopefully that means that it's not malware at all and someone at Google just made a mistake in updating an updater or something, but I'd worry about what a mistake would do with my admin password too. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | mgmt_drone | 19/08/16 19:35 | Actually, go to /Library/Internet Plug-ins, and you can find the "Google Earth Web Plug-in.plugin" file and remove it | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Lindenne | 19/08/16 19:37 | I've been having this issue this evening, too. I've seen the popup 3 times now. It just pops up at random while I'm watching Youtube, even in fullscreen. Seemed very suspicious to me since I not only didn't try to install or update a program manually, I don't have Google Earth on this computer (though I might have installed it for some time in the past). I tried the "defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0" thing the second time I saw it, because after it reappeared, the first thing I did was try to find out how to make it stop. It clearly didn't work... and I don't think I mistyped, but I did just try to enter it again. I don't have any malware/adware on this computer as far as I know. I don't use it for all that much anymore besides watching Youtube and the occasional edit in Photoshop. Haven't downloaded anything since April and that download was never even opened, haha, so I'm doubting it's a malware/adware related thing on my end... Hopefully there will be some insight into this problem soon. | ||

I only became suspicious after the popup came up for the second time on my iMac after entering my password. Which, of course, is a bit weird... if it's malware, it doesn't need my password twice. I'd still like to think it's some Google F-up. Fingers crossed. In the mean time, has anybody been affected who can say with 100% certainty that you've never installed *anything* to do with GE, ever? | Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Stan Pun | 19/08/16 19:54 | Could it have anythng to do with the Google Earth API being deprecated. Maybe someone is exploiting the security issues in a new way.<< Over six years ago we introduced the Google Earth API,
enabling developers to build rich 3D mapping applications in the
browser, using JavaScript. And over the years, developers have built
quite a number of fascinating applications. However, the Earth API is built on a technology called the NPAPI plugin framework, and recently, for security reasons, both Chrome and Firefox
have announced they’re removing support for this framework. These
security reasons, combined with dwindling cross-platform support
(particularly on mobile devices), had made building applications that
leverage the Earth API untenable for developers. Therefore, after careful consideration, we have decided to retire the Google Earth API. Per our deprecation policy, the API will be supported until one year from today and will be turned off on December 12, 2015.

I stupidly put in my password after the 5th time to see if that would stop it. It didn't. I have since changed my password for obvious reasons. The good news is it has been a bit since I last saw it. I'll attempt to do some of the fixes if I see it again.

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Carson Gleberman | 19/08/16 20:11 | Well, you have to be careful not to delete your Earth, Wind and Fire songs in the process :-) This middle-aged person needs help with a step you have left out, because it is no doubt obvious to you: How do you get from the Spotlight list to actual files to delete? I see "Google Earth - Applications," "Google Earth - MacIntosh HD," and "Google Earth Web Plugin." But no amount of right clicking, Alt clicking, Ctrl clicking or cussing will let me move these from that list to the trash, or reveal their file paths. More info please? | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Frank Marten | 19/08/16 20:11 | I started to get this and I ended up uninstalling Google Earth. On the next reboot I had the same prompt so I searched for and deleted the Google Earth Web Plug-in, com.google.GoogleEarthPlugin.plist, com.google.keystone.agent.plist and the com.google.keystone.daemon.plist. These are own the /Library under LaunchDaemons and LaunchAgents. After this the prompt went away. | Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Christine_Hummingbird | 19/08/16 20:13 | So....everyone is getting this pop-up, including me when I don't even have Google Earth installed (and recently drug Google Chrome to the trash in effort to solve the problem), BUT NO ONE FROM GOOGLE EARTH HAS OFFERED A SOLUTION. And I can't find any chat room, telephone number, e-mail or ANYTHING to contact Google or Google Earth for help. This is really terrible. I removed Chrome because I never had this pop-up before I installed it a day ago, and now I can't get rid of the pop-up even though I do not and never have had Google Earth. Very frustrating. And boos to you Google for no offering any help. | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | EDRose | 19/08/16 20:13 | Hey, this page is getting long, and it is unclear which solution is authoritative, or which ones work. Also, being pretty rusty on digging around a Mac using Terminal, it would take a lot of time to learn the ropes. Is there a way to check back later for an official Google solution? Anybody know if Google will identify the issue and issue a bug fix, or alert users that a third party has been phishing? Thanks By the way, I made the mistake of giving it my password, so I just changed all my passwords. No fun. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Michael C. Berch | 19/08/16 20:15 | After reading through the topic I ran Malwarebytes and it found something called SaveFrom.net Helper (browser extension?) and removed it. Looking through the strings in that package it says "Helps users to get direct links to download from more than 40 websites, including Dailymotion.com, YouTube.com, VK.com and others". A couple of years ago I had another malware incident and it was a Chrome extension that purported to add a feature to Google Maps. Deleting it solved that problem, and I wonder if this will do it too. By the way, I did not have any unauthorized mounted volumes (GoogleEarthUpdater or otherwise). | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | David Barak | 19/08/16 20:23 | Note that if you copy and paste the command as seen on that page, there's a slight glitch that I think was caused during the posting process (not by the poster). The command should be: sudo /library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app/Contents/Resources/ksinstall --nuke The double dashes before "nuke" at the end apparently turned into a dash and a hyphen. That didn't work for me so I used the double dashes and the command ran. Hopefully it actually did its job. | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | comvic | 19/08/16 20:26 | I idiotically entered my password, about three hours ago now, pop up persists. No bad side effects or suspicious looking processes running while the pop up is running or otherwise according to top, but I can't vouch for that. Incredibly annoying, can't watch sports or movies. I think its genuine. I saw something posted somewhere about the API expiring. But don't be an idiot like me and enter your password. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Ken Powell | 19/08/16 20:26 | Guys, don't freak out. You're not likely infected. Looks like Google just has some loose stuff (e.g.: bugs) in their updater. After getting rid of the Google Earth application and it's associated files and rebooting I was still getting this pop up. BTW, it started for me on Aug. 19 of 2016. I found the process GoogleSoftwareUpdate running and traced it to /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle. That's not in your ~/Library so it doesn't show up under Users -> Login Items. It's a system file. Move GoogleSofwareUpdate.bundle to the trash (which *will* likely require an authentication from an administrator of the system) and reboot. It will probably ruin Chrome updates, too, but that should do it. | ||

I was getting 'two' of these dialog windows, one just saying "installer wants permission" and the second saying "Google Earth wanting permission". I went into disk utility, killed the 4 mounted instances. Went into Library and deleted the google folder entirely. Also went into caches and force deleted the google.dir there. Quit chrome, and my screen went blue. Came back after wake though. Guess it's time I ditch Google on this Mac... ever since the stupid banners saying they no longer support this OSX version, and now this bullshit... forget it, they have lost this stock holder.

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Anelim | 19/08/16 20:35 | I've also been getting the same pop-up, starting today. One thing I've noticed in the last month or so is a request to update Google Earth on my updates screen, not on my browser (Chrome)... I've never had Google Earth and do not currently have it installed. I'd been ignoring the request and not really thinking about it until the pop-up started. I wonder if they're connected. Hope there's a solution soon. Didn't give it my password, but it's bloody annoying. | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | jlinz | 19/08/16 20:41 | I poked around Library and found what I hope is the culprit in a different place than some others have called out. Mine was in Cache, com.google.SoftwareUpdate, then Downloads. Something timestamped 6:03 PM today and over 48MB called com.Google.GoogleEarthPlugin.intel_7.1.5.1557. I deleted it, but probably have about a half hour before the prompt would have shown up, so I'm not sure if it worked yet. I have no idea how it got there though, and I'm sure it's not a coincidence it was timestamped right when I started getting the prompts. | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | BeadyEl | 19/08/16 21:01 | When this came up just a short while ago, I launched Activity Monitor, located "Google Earth Installer", did a Get Info and found the location of the executable (always the first entry under the Open Files tab.) It was called just "applet" and it was inside an installer package, on a disk image that was mounted but not visible in Finder. I used the Go/Go To Folder ... command to force Finder to show it, and then snagged a copy of the installer package. Then I clicked Cancel in the password dialog - and sure enough, the disk image unmounted itself and the finder window reverted back to root level. Damn fishy. However on the plus side; Intego Virusbarrier found no malware, and when I peek into the package with Paficist, it reports a valid Developer ID signature for Google Inc, registered with Apple. So - I'm tentatively thinking it's legit, but VERY poorly executed, asking for the admin password before it even announces itself or explains what sorts of updates it wants to make. Download your own copy of the pkg to dissect. <--- Execute the package at your own risk. | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | k hoop | 19/08/16 21:16 | I got this once an hour all afternoon and evening. What I did that seems to have worked was open the disk utility when the popup arrived, right clicked the item and selected 'reveal in finder.' I then closed the popup, ejected via the disk utility, and deleted the file I found via the disk utility. It hasn't come back since then (it's been significantly longer than the time between popups before). Interestingly, the file claims it originated at a time that my internet history indicates no sketchy activity (which was 7:30PM-ish, EST). Unsure what this means in terms of the meaning of the popup. Regardless, what I did seems to have stopped it from popping up at least. | ||

I started to fear it may have been a suspicious package asking for your admin password, so I was quickly able to change my password, again and again. But then if it's legit, why hasn't google sent out an all out notice email? or all out general notice prior to this prompt occurring? No warning at all! I've uninstalled Google Earth app as a result of this, but so far, this prompt has occurred twice. It would have saved us anxiety and fear-mongering. I agree with you that this issue is HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS and likely VERY DANGEROUS. It's bizarre that this JUST started happening for each of us today (roughly, depending on time zone). My system has Google Earth updated, but I checked on the official site and mine is the latest build (May 2015). I have Chrome on my system, but I seriously doubt it would create a "Google Earth Updater" since that is ANOTHER piece of software. I'm considering just deleting this folder entirely, and then seeing what happens. Thoughts, Todd? - Rich
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | RexRox | 19/08/16 22:22 | I have been driven crackers by these pop-ups since last night. | Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Rich Vermillion | 19/08/16 22:28 | Ejecting the disk alone isn't enough, as others said the stupid pop-up comes back. The offending source is a file located in: /Library/Caches/com.google.SoftwareUpdate.0 That last folder is locked and I received the message...
...when attempting to open it. So I just deleted that entire folder, and no other files. I'm really NOT sure the source of this folder is Google at all! So in the mean time, I'm leaving Chrome & Google Earth alone. - Rich

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Larry Herzberg | 19/08/16 22:32 | I'm also having this problem. Just started, and I think it might be connected to a phishing email I received earlier today involving a .zip file that I stupidly clicked on. Since it was popping up every 10-15 minutes and hasn't returned since, I take this as a good sign. It's still infuriating, though. I'm also running Clamscan. If this is either old Google software running wild or someone taking advantage of old updater protocols, Google needs to fix it stat! | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Viet-Tam Luu | 19/08/16 22:43 | Hi folks, on behalf of the Earth team I apologize for the confusion. It appears that a while back we had disabled the auto-updater for the Mac Google Earth Plugin for Safari/Firefox, possibly because of this very issue. Today we inadvertently turned it back on. Oops! There is no malware threat; the Updater is simply trying to update any installation of Google Earth Plugin you may have previously installed on your system (and possibly forgotten about). You can uninstall the Earth Plugin and its associated files via the instructions here: https://support.google.com/earth/answer/178389?hl=en Specifically: "Mac: Drag the /Library/Internet Plug-ins/Google Earth Web Plug-in.plugin file to the trash, then restart your browser." Note that depending on what version of Earth Plugin you currently have installed, "Library" may refer to the one in the "root folder" of your hard drive (commonly called "MacintoshHD") and/or the one in your home folder. If the plugin is installed in either of those locations the Updater may notify you of an available update. Once again I apologize for any inconvenience caused. - Viet-Tam Luu (Google Earth developer) | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Attention : Google Corporate | 19/08/16 22:52 | Hi Marcy- This sounds like it would be the answer considering there was a recent update and Google + Apple assume that by now everyone has just added the update (which included these plug-ins and other secrets)- and now's the time to deploy popups to get your password. Thank you, Marcy! | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | KenP1234 | 19/08/16 22:54 | I've also been getting the Google Earth Update pop-up on my Mac since early this afternoon (8/19). Using Safari and I do have Google Earth loaded on my computer. Seeing lots of ideas and suggestions here, but so far, doesn't appear to be a definitive solution. Hope we can get a real answer to solve this soon. I already had an appointment set for this Monday to take my Mac in for diagnostics because it's been running slower than it should - I'm guessing maybe due to unnecessary stuff running in the background and I don't want to mess around inside the system myself. If this Google Earth thing continues through the weekend, will have them take a look at that too! | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | WhosYourBuddy | 19/08/16 23:01 | So here's the thing, if you have been getting the "google earth update helper mac" as I have and it's not really from Google then it's not Google's problem either and Google won't have a solution nor be required to provide a solution. I use multiple web browsers (Safari, Firefox, Opera & Chrome) and I'm running Mac OS 10.11.6 Either way I believe it's an Apple problem but we're all in this together. Remain calm and don't enter in your password if prompted. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Blaggards Stout Irish Rock | 19/08/16 23:06 | This seems to have fixed it, thanks! The trick was looking in the "root folder" as you mentioned and getting rid the Google Updater there. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Malquiades | 19/08/16 23:09 | You can add me to the list of affected MacBook Pro users. Started about an hour ago. I have been traveling west across the southwest today so I didn't open my mac or connect to the internet until about 3 hours ago. I place this, then, as something that made its way into my system about 1-2 hours after being online. I agree with many that I will continue to hit cancel and monitor the the thread. If it's connected to folders that are unlockable and changing admin passwords is not working I'm more than sure it is above my skill and knowledge to fix it. Something is definitely up. I don't know what and I am guessing that all this chatter will draw enough attention to get more adept specialists on the case. Good luck and keep communicating. Thanks everyone. Oh, and if you have any thoughts contrary to mine please let me know and offer an explanation. Should I worry? And even if I should worry do I really have the ability to do anything about it? | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Alpha XX | 19/08/16 23:09 | SOLUTION: Go to bed & get some sleep. Obviously, we are all wasting our time. Sooner or later Google, Mac, or whoever will decide to earn their keep & come up w/ a solution. In the meantime life is too short. Enjoy! | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Viet-Tam Luu | 19/08/16 23:22 | Quick update: we've rolled back (undone) the changes that caused the update notifications so hopefully these will subside soon enough. I wouldn't necessarily recommend removing the updater itself, as it may be used for other installed Google software (you can learn more about the Updater, or the version of it that we open-sourced, here: https://code.google.com/archive/p/update-engine/). Regarding the password prompt, this is due to the latest version of the Plugin being installed as a system-wide software (just like the desktop Google Earth app is), rather than an app local to the user's account (as older versions did), which is why it is prompting for a password for login--just the same as if you were installing the desktop Earth app. So there's nothing nefarious going on--but again I do apologize about any concerns this may have caused. Thanks,
| ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Wendy Fong | 19/08/16 23:46 | Mac OS X now requires that updates to Google Earth - starting with Google Earth 7.1.4 - use an installer package. Before the software is installed, Mac OS X will ask that you input your administrator password. This information is never shared with Google. If you choose to not install the update when initially prompted, Mac OS X will continue to request that you do so once a week until the update is complete or you have removed the Google Earth app. | ||

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Noisette | 20/08/16 08:15 | Lance, the problem was with the Google Earth browser plugin (https://www.google.com/earth/explore/products/plugin.html) not Google Earth the program. In fact, it only affected those who didn't have the latest version of the plugin, so possibly people who had installed it a while back to view something on a particular website, then forgotten about it. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | jwvanderbeck | 20/08/16 08:17 | Viet-Tam Luu That is all well and good except what about the fact that many of us here *never installed Google Earth* to begin with? I followed your link to uninstalling anyway and sure enough there are no files in any of those locations. Seems to me there is more than just a rogue updater here. Somehow the usage of Chrome has forced something on to our systems that we never asked for. I think after this gets cleaned up I will no longer be using Chrome as I can't trust it. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | AC72 | 20/08/16 08:24 | The pop ups seemed to have stopped, I haven't had a single prompt since 8am (3+ hours ago). I did disable the Google Earth plug in on Safari, also I deleted everything in " ~/Library/Caches/ ", - I know this is safe to do, I do it often to wipe out a lot of junk...rebooted the Mac and empty the trash. Also did a Sudo command to Google Updater to kill any updates..I did turn this back on this morning though So either I got rid of the annoyance or Google fixed the issue. Whatever it was, it was incredibly annoying! | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | calypte anna | 20/08/16 08:27 | Thanks for the information, Noisette. Presuming the issue people are having stems from an old version of the Google Earth plug in, how should people best proceed to remove the old plug in and resolve the issue? | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Viet-Tam Luu | 20/08/16 08:35 | Hi jwanderbeck, the app in question is not Google Earth but the Google Earth Plugin, which is installed in a different location ("/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Google Earth Web Plug-in.plugin" and "~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Google Earth Web Plug-in.plugin", "~" being your home directory which is usually "/Users/{your_mac_username}"). I'm sorry I failed to communicate this effectively in my earlier post. Is it possible you installed the Plugin some time ago, possibly on a previous Mac, and forgot about it? To the best of my knowledge the update notifications would only have affected users with the Plugin installed, but I'm investigating all possibilities.

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Aaron Offutt | 20/08/16 09:35 | The google earth updater prompt in question started for me last night around 5pm CDT. I had 3 instances of the ejectable disks in disk utility, so ejected them and haven't seen a pop up yet... anxious to see what it is! | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Aaron Offutt | 20/08/16 09:40 | Let me be very clear: I have never installed Google Earth on my early 2011 macbook pro, I always run safari, and this GE Update helper popped up as I was ending my day yesterday, Friday 19th, at around 5:00 CDT. None of the Library, internet plugins etc have anything to do with GE in them, but did have 3 instances of the Disk Utility ejectable line items, which I ejected. Hasn't happened again yet. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | WhosYourBuddy | 20/08/16 10:25 | If this is the case then this is a pretty major F*ck Up on the part of Google then. This board represents only a spall fraction of the affected users. Does google plan on informing anyone outside of this board of the issue? | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | GaryMN | 20/08/16 11:24 | I removed Google Earth from my hard drive using AppCleaner and the annoying, suspicious pop-ups seem to have gone away. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Lyrinda Snyderman | 20/08/16 11:42 | But it will not accept the only Google password that I know I have - and it does not provide a prompt for "Create a new password" or "Recover password." Shall I just ignore the entire popup on Update Helper? I have

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Viet-Tam Luu | 20/08/16 11:52 | Hello Lyrinda, it's actually asking for your Mac username and password, because it's asking for permission to install as a system-wide app, the same way the Earth installer did when you first installed it. At no point is your username or password shared, stored or transmitted. You can simply dismiss the dialog and the Update Helper should eventually stop prompting you.

| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Lyrinda Snyderman | 20/08/16 11:58 | I first assumed that it wanted my Apple password - but that password does not work. It just “shakes me off.” I can’t update. And thank you for a quick and personal response! - Lyrinda | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | vic_nz | 20/08/16 12:16 | Hi Googleproblemtoo, I had already restore my system to 15 Aug 2016 but the issue is still there. Hi Viet Luu, I tried to uninstall the Google Earth plugin but can’t find that at the locations you posted earlier:
The Finder keeps crashing and I have to restart that a few times when I tried to locate the Plugin. Please Help!
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | WCate | 20/08/16 12:45 | Removing the Google Earth web plug-in (/Library/Internet Plug Ins/) and rebooting made it stop. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | akula | 20/08/16 13:54 | I haven't had the problem since trashing about everything to do with Google. I appreciate Viet-Tam Luu's input, but I hate to say this has really been a scary issue. This really shakes my confidence in Google, and now that I'm having problems with my GMAIL account constantly being suspended - for no apparent reason - and with NO WAY to contact Google customer service, I am seriously looking at alternatives. Remember when having a GMail account was almost a prestige thing? Not anymore... | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | SteveC323 | 20/08/16 14:39 | What worked for me: Others said to do this command in terminal: sudo /library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app/Contents/Resources/ksinstall --nuke I couldn't get terminal to recognize this command - but - I was able to follow this chain of files in finder (using right-click "open package contents" on GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle and GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app) until I found the "ksinstall" file, and deleted that and emptied my trash. Apparently this will stop all google services from updating; that might not be good, but it's certainly better than buggy updates. Anyway, it worked for stopping the pop-up. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Lance Jacobs (NYC) | 20/08/16 14:54 | I followed Viet-Tam's lead- I did nothing, removed nothing, did not launch terminal or modify anything. The pop-ups have stopped on all 3 Macs in my household and our systems seem otherwise normal and stable. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Aaphid | 20/08/16 14:59 | I'm experiencing the same thing as Googleprblemtoo and I'm on Mavericks too. If you find a fix I'd like to know. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | PDW1 | 20/08/16 15:06 | This started plaguing me all yesterday - when I first got the pop-up I trustingly entered my password and yet the pop-up kept appearing all day. Eventually I found this forum (thanks all), changed my login password, switched of my work Mac and moved to my laptop in fear of using a potentially infected computer. Reading Viet-Tam's post above this morning I was encouraged to try again and the pop-up (so far) has not re-occurred, so I can only conclude that Google have somehow instructed their robotic little spy to behave. I didn't do any deleting of files or Terminal fiddlings. These kind of 'hidden' updaters in the wrong hands clearly have considerable potential to cause widespread worry and time-wasting. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Wilson Phillips | 20/08/16 15:11 | Nothing worked yesterday (Aug 19), none of the many suggestions and instructions. But today, Aug 20, it hasn't popped up at all.... so far. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | David Barak | 20/08/16 22:37 | "...I wouldn't necessarily recommend removing the updater itself..." Good idea. I uninstalled all Google software instead. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Lance Jacobs (NYC) | 21/08/16 03:18 | @Viet-Tamm - I'm afraid we're not out of the woods yet. This morning, some odd behavior on my Mac Pro (Mavericks) prompted me to restart, and at restart Google Drive showed an update prompt hanging from the Google Drive menubar. An item in the Drive menu bar requested permission to install an update and I did it. The next thing I noticed was the my Finder was a disaster. No files would show in list view or column view (just empty windows), opening new finder windows would leave animation trails, and when my screensaver kicked in, it was running only inside an open finder window. I removed Google Drive from my list of Log-in items, restarted and seem to be ok as a result. Feel free to PM me, i'll be happy to assist with troubleshooting or provide a system profiler report. I'm a TC on the Sheet forum and will be happy to help. Thanks, Lance | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | steven schickler | 21/08/16 07:05 | Viet-Tam, and all During the frenzy before Google fixed the problem (and I've had no pop-up problems for more than a day now as Viet-Tam has promised) I tried to eliminate all traces of Google on my computer including Google plug-ins, Google Earth etc. I don't even remember everything I removed. My question is whether I've removed necessary security features on my computer (I use Google to browse) and should reinstall something. I was intending to also also reinstall Google Earth. Wonder if anyone can help. thanks. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | E Kennedy | 21/08/16 16:34 | hmmmm....soooo, after deleting everything Google I could find on my iMac, and using PermanentEraser to overwrite the deleted files 7 times, and doing an anti-virus scan of my complete drive - which took over 24 hours!!! - I come back to find I did't have to go through all that because Google messed up!!!??? Than's good, I guess, but I still have one question: Why, if Google controls the updater, was it turned on at all since there hasn't been an update to GoogleEarth in OVER A YEAR! And still isn't one??? What was so important that Google had to put all these Mac users (and who knows how many Windows and Chromebook users!) through all this??????????????? | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Adam Elmquist | 21/08/16 16:45 | Just posting an update since I had this issue over three days ago the updater dialog was coming up every so often for me.. After doing nothing but reporting that it has happened to me here in this post, it now has been two days since reporting and the updater has not come back up, so it may seem like Google fixed something to me. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Googleprblemtoo | 21/08/16 17:23 | I did a restore and it was Ok for about 1/2 hr then froze again. I ran a clean install this morning and am migrating my stuff now. I'll post an update. Thanks google for taking my business down. I have deleted all google products and will not use them again. I'll stick to web based. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | robertlipe | 21/08/16 22:30 | That "G" in his badge confirms it's a Google Employee. (That's changed many times through the years, so it's OK to have not noticed.) Viet-Tam Luu may be a new name here, here, but I'll offer my credibility (if I have any...) that there is indeed a software engineer of many years by that name working on Google Earth (and has been for years) and this aspect specifically and that the Viet-Tam Luu I have lunch with from time to time writes and talks like the one above, so I'm pretty convinced that he's the Real Deal. He's not had a high public profile, but I'd be hard to catphish on this one. In case I have no credibility, and you question that I'm the real deal, I'm also a developer on Earth and have been working with the group since about 2005. While I'm scarce in this group, check the byline of https://maps.googleblog.com/2009/02/explore-your-travels-with-gps-in-google.html The creator of GPSBabel, a post history of > 10 years on Earth-things (predating Keyhole's sale to Google) etc. Googlerblemtoo, this shouldn't cause Finder to lose its mind. Finder does get annoyed if you eject the volume for the window you have open; it'll abruptly close the window, but it's still responsive to events like New Window, etc. The Plugin has been effectively dead for a long time; it's not run on any viable browser in a while. Removing it is a good prescription. We know that software claiming to be an installed app and asking for an admin password is bad. Having it happen late on a Friday is particularly bad. Sorry. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Noisette | 22/08/16 01:15 | Thanks Robert :) Just to add, that in fact Viet-Tam didn't have the employee "G" badge until sometime after Lance posted querying his status. It was added partly because of that query. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | vic_nz | 22/08/16 01:27 | I reported the Finder crashing problem yesterday and after doing some searching, it seems to be a known issue with Google Drive (not Google Earth but yet another Google product!). I didn't uninstall Google Drive but just turned off "Show file sync status and right click menu". It seems to fix the problem for now. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Googleprblemtoo | 22/08/16 06:18 | Well it did and apparently to other Mavericks users as well. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Googleprblemtoo | 22/08/16 06:20 | My file sync was turned off before this. But thAnks for the info. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Aaphid | 22/08/16 13:46 | Thanks vic_nz Finder on my Mac running Mavericks had been misbehaving quite badly and as you mentioned Google Drive was the culprit. Is it a coincidence that both of these Google related issues appeared at the same time? | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Victor Yepello | 22/08/16 14:05 | I added my password and the next morning I was locked out of my iMac. Same with my husband's imac. Had to do a restore both machines and then changed all passwords everywhere. Do not take this lightly. If you added your password you have been phished. | ||
| Re: Google Earth update pop-up | Victor Yepello | 22/08/16 14:14 | It was Malware. I added my password and the next morning I was locked out of my iMac. Same with my husband's imac. |
