New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Travisimo 7/10/13 11:37 AM
Using the new maps app on my HTC One (Android), I cannot seem to get the app to open if I touch an address from the address book (Phone/Contacts).   There association seems to be broken.  When I first tried to open an address from Contacts, it opened Glympse instead.  So I thought that perhaps it was just that Glympse was set as the default.  So I checked that and it wasn't, but just in case, I uninstalled Glympse.   Once I did that, I tried opening an address from Contacts again and this time nothing at all happened... no app opened.   With the old maps app, I could click on an address and it would open up in maps.   That is broken, at least on my HTC One.

Anyone notice this?  Is anyone able to open contact addresses in the new maps app?   As a workaround, I can type the name of the contact in the maps search bar, but that is obviously not what I want to do.  I haven't tried opening a maps link from Chrome, but I'm assuming that's probably broken as well if the association is broken.

Hi Travisimo,
Thanks for letting us know.  Can you provide your Android OS version, so that we can look into this?
Also, please give it a try in Chrome if you can, so we can confirm that this issue is specific to the Maps app.
Thank you!
Abby
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Travisimo 7/10/13 2:23 PM
Certainly, I would love to provide you with more information.

HTC One (AT&T) running 4.1.2 and HTC Sense 5.0 (not rooted, no custom roms)
Software Number (from the About screen) is 1.26.502.12
HTC SDK API level = 5.12
New Google Maps app version 7.0.0 (#700002504)

Steps to reproduce:

1) Install the new Google Maps APK.
2) Open the Maps app and verify it is working (should be working fine).
3) Now go into the Phone application, scroll over a Contact that has an address, and then try to click on the address.
4) Before the Maps update, this would automatically open the Maps app with the contact's address loaded, but with the new Maps app, nothing will happen at all (the Maps app is not launched and the address is not carried over).

NOTE:  If you have another mapping application installed, that application may be launched instead.  For example, I initially had Glympse installed and when I clicked the address in the Phone app, it would launch Glympse.  However, this is not because of a "default" application setting, as the problem still occurred even after I completely uninstalled Glympse and rebooted the phone.  The problem is that the new Google Maps app is not being recognized by the Phone app on the HTC One, and so nothing happens when you click on an address.  There is no screen popup asking what application you want to use to open addresses, and the Maps app will not open with the associated address.

NOTE 2:  I can confirm that everything is working properly in Chrome as well as within Google Now.  Specifically, if I search for a restaurant in Chrome and I then click on the "Directions" link, I do get the popup asking me what app to use, and when I choose "Maps", it properly opens up in the new Maps.   So it appears to be an issue specifically with the Phone/Contacts application on my phone.  My phone is not rooted or running a custom rom, so this would just be the stock HTC Sense phone/contacts app.

I hope that helps.  Again, I don't know if this is a universal issue with the new maps app with devices running 4.1.2, or perhaps just an issue with the API on the HTC One and HTC Sense?

Thanks for responding!
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Travisimo 7/11/13 7:34 AM
Abby, it would be great if you could reply back if they were able to duplicate the problem, or if it's just something on my end?   Thanks a bunch.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Yann Génaux 7/11/13 8:14 AM
Go to phone settings -> Applications -> Glympse and tap the button "clear default actions"

And next time you will tap your contact adress, you will see the open with dialog window
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? shew082 7/13/13 8:38 PM
I'm getting the same thing on my HTC One SV. With this new maps version there seems to be absolutely no way to use Google navigation to one of my contacts address!

- The people app buttons don't work,
- The old navigation app which included a "contacts"section for choosing a destination is gone
- There seems to be no way of searching / choosing a contact's address in the new maps app.

Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? jonathan melendez 8/1/13 8:44 PM
I just noticed this today. Found this post. So I will add to it. I am rooted with the clean ROM sense ROM. In contacts click on address maps won't open up :-/.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Alan Brockett 8/5/13 9:56 AM
I have this exact same problem with my At&t HTC One. Only it's a problem with At&t Navigator. Can't set default to Google maps even when I clear defaults and disable At&t navigator. No box comes up when I select an address in contacts. Nothing happens :(
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Shaun Creighton 8/6/13 1:20 AM
I  am experiencing the same thing... Only options to view maps of addresses from my contacts are Waze and Glympse. Maps is set (under App Association settings) as default app for map urls and physical addresses and works fine from other sites or apps, but not directly from contacts. It didn't do this before the update. I have an HTC One S running Android 4.1.1.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Wendy Neikrie 8/6/13 6:30 AM
Has there been any movement on this?  I too have the HTC One and it's quite frustrating to have nothing happen when I click on an address in my contacts.  That navigation icon is just a tease...  Thank you...
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? fatcat220 8/6/13 6:36 PM
I have the same problem on my HTC EVO LTE 4G.  No root, stock ROM and up to date.  I can only access my contact addresses by searching within the Map app.  Please fix this soon!
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Nick Parker 8/7/13 12:12 PM
I'm having this issue as well. I just downloaded an OTA update within the last few days as well. I'm on Android version 4.1.2, Software number 1.26.502.15, HTC Sense version 5.0.

I have the same problem on HTC One. It seems like it's happening to all. Google: When is a fix coming?
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Matt DAddio 8/11/13 4:39 PM
Hi,
I am having the same problem.
HTC One X
Android 4.1.1
ATT
HTC Sense 4+
Phone is not rooted.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Adrian van Nunen 8/12/13 8:10 PM
Same issue here on 4.2.2 and I know of others experiencing the same thing.  Rolling back the update to Maps restores the association but obviously that means you don't have all the new features of Maps.  This problem also affects the HTC Car app.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? james vanek 8/15/13 8:36 AM
HTC evo 3D. OS vr4.0.3.
My postal addresses in my phone contacts pulls up the maps app but it doesn't do anything. The GPS indicator flashes and then goes into a non-flashing freeze... The Maps app and GPS appears to freeze until I back out of the maps app.

Same problem new HTC one on tmo.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? jonathan melendez 8/15/13 9:36 AM
Must be a HTC bug. I just installed a GE ROM. Works fine now. Hopefully they fix it.

Anybody try Maps 7.1 yet? Does it resolve this? https://plus.google.com/107360158046002405697/posts/6wCRSPwULnv
Problem solved Skipper ako 8/15/13 11:08 PM
Go to contacts search for the person you want the address to go to then click on their profile photo,  a small Window will appear regarding the person info click on the Google map icon right next to the phone icon,  then the address will appear then click on that and voila problem solved.
Re: Problem solved gnealz 8/16/13 5:47 AM
This isn't a solution, but a workaround.

I have a HTC One with the new google maps.

Google maps 7.1.0
Android version 4.2.2
software number 2.24.401.1

If I tap the person's address from their contact page it launches the maps application, but I get a grey screen. It doesn't search for the address.

Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? stephenarcher78 8/16/13 7:48 AM
I'm hitting the same problem - recently purchased HTC One, Sense 5.0/Android 4.2.2 and up to date Google Maps.  Tapping an address in the stock People app does nothing at all.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Ed Witles 8/16/13 10:16 AM
Epic fail..... Guess it is an HTC/Sense bug. But w/ all the HTC toys out there, this SHOULD have been resolved prior to release.

Running HTC thunderbolt 4.0.4 and maps 7.1
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? jonathan melendez 8/16/13 9:14 PM
Not a Google maps Or Google problem. HTC problem. I installed GE ROM and it works flawlessly. Also has or on HTC Roms.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Shaun Creighton 8/17/13 7:32 PM
Assumed it was an HTC problem, too, since all of these complaints are coming from HTC users. But whatever the source of the problem was, it seems to be fixed with the newest version of Maps. I just updated to 7.1.0, and now Maps come up again as an option when I click on an address from the Contacts app. Anybody else had luck with this after the update?
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Shaun Creighton 8/17/13 7:38 PM
I take it back ... Maps does come up as an option now when I click on an address in my Contacts, but Maps just ends up displaying a grey screen when it launches and the address never comes up. Back to the drawing board, I guess ...
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Artem Russakovskii 8/17/13 8:00 PM
@shaun Same experience with our HTC One - it's only fixed half-way, which is to say it's not fixed at all.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? shew082 8/17/13 8:26 PM
Yep, same here... I was actually kind of excited for a minute there! I guess it's time to wait another few weeks :-(
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Thomas Donohue 8/19/13 6:46 PM
Same problem with my HTC EVO V 4G.  After the latest Google Maps update, I cannot click on an address in my contacts to bring up the map/navigation app anymore.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Ed Witles 8/19/13 8:08 PM
Well, I have found a fix... Just install ANY other contacts widget/app and maps works just dandy from the contact address. So far, Ex Contacts and Contact + seem to do very nicely.

Do you have any suggestion? Any particular app you have tried ?
please! I'm desperate!
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Matt DAddio 8/20/13 4:42 PM
Just got the maps 7.1 update. As others have posted, now when I click an address, maps opens but the window never draws.

Thanks for the work around.  I'm not fond of the Contact+ app, but at least it works. Hopefully the actual fix works to enable the stock app. Thnx much
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? samman888 8/20/13 11:40 PM
I been having the same issue, hope they fix it soon, it's a pain not to be able to access the address listed on the address book, and this is suppose to be Google's own Map and Address app.  The Iphone contact and Map works great on how everything is connected so well.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? samman888 8/20/13 11:58 PM
Do you guys working on a fix or just leave us hanging with this new map update?  google Map is suppose to be the best? but the features are certainly not.

HTC One. Just updated the Google map again today, 8/20/13.  still unable to access the address from my contact list.  I go into my contact and push the address.  the map app open, but only give me a blank white screen. but if I use the search feature on the map, it's fine.  Also, there still no easy access to the maps store on my contact list from the map app.  make it more complicated when on the road.  I thought safety was suppose to be first and for most make it easy to access when people are driving. On the previous version, from the map app, just slide right and all the address from the contact list show up which is so easy when on the road. Running Android 4.1.2 on HTC One with Sense 5.T-mobile phone
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? fatcat220 8/21/13 4:20 PM
Same here with my HTC EVO LTE.  The last update allowed me to open the map from my contacts, but the address of interest didn't populate on the map.  I've finally decided to uninstall the latest updates and go back to the version that worked.  I did like some of the new features, but I need the contact to map function more than the extra bells.  Hope this is all fixed in the near future.

So lame, but here are two crummy as-is February work-arounds:

1) edit the contact and copy/paste just the street address line into maps, manually type city, usually that's enough

2) I use this one (faster than looking up contacts anyways): install Google Now, hold search button to launch (just like old searches), say "Google, open contact first last" where first and last are the contact's name, or company, etc.  Then click once on the address field to launch maps with address loaded.  To nav, then click the blue car in the bottom right, choose the route, then press the blue nav symbol with "start" under it in the bottom right

HTC Droid DNA, newest maps

Meant temporary work-arounds, not February...thanks Swype.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? samman888 8/22/13 5:38 PM
yes, I realize there are work arounds, however if that is the case, it defeats the purpose of having everything integrated.  Also it makes it more complicated while on the road and more of a hazard if anyone suddenly needs to call up an address. Google needs to find a way to integrate all of their products together so it can work well.  I have to give this to Apple IOS, Apple's Map is not as good as Google's, but their integration works great and you can have Seri do the work.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? markgladden 8/22/13 6:00 PM
Google Now = Seri for android.  Problem also appears to be HTC specific, but I agree Google should product test more before releasing updates.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? tony in orlando 9/2/13 1:22 PM
Sorry if this has already been discussed. Using HTC One X, if I go into contacts, then tap on the contacts picture/avatar (to the left of the name), a Google maps icon will appear. Tapping on that will then open Google maps and display correctly. If I just tap on the contact name itself and then "view home address" it just opens Google maps to a blank screen.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? tony in orlando 9/2/13 1:25 PM
On a side note....entering the contact name directly in the Google map search bar doesn't work.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? fatcat220 9/2/13 9:14 PM
Thanks Tony.  That works for HTC EVO LTE too.  This is good enough for now, for me.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? samman888 9/3/13 2:36 AM
I guess there are work arounds, but it really does not fix the problem. I have gone back and use the old version and it works great, I just done have the real time traffic like the new version does, but at least everything works will as it suppose to.

Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Artem Russakovskii 9/12/13 11:12 PM
I'm glad to report that Maps 7.2 fixes this issue.

Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? fatcat220 9/13/13 4:07 AM
How do you get Maps 7.2?  My latest update was still in the 7.1's.  Also, how do I make a searched and found store or restaurant into a "contact"?  Again something I could do with the previous map versions.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Artem Russakovskii 9/13/13 4:16 AM
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? Shaun Creighton 9/14/13 9:46 AM
Yep... Updated to 7.2 this morning and it seems to be fixed. I'll be setting Maps back up as my default mapping app.
Re: New Android Maps - Contact addresses? fatcat220 9/14/13 2:59 PM
So I've downloaded Maps 7.2 and it does fix the previous problem of down loading an address from a contacts to the map.  Next question, I used to be able to search for a business while in maps, find it, and then upload the this address and phone number to my contacts - I can't figure out how to do this from the new maps.  Does anyone know how to up load a contact from the map to contacts?
