Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Fraoch 6/22/12 8:25 AM
I've used this handy feature for years now but today it has suddenly stopped working completely.

I'm now getting a 404 Not Found error in the myGarmin Garmin Communicator Plugin page.  This sort of indicates to me that Google Maps is sending a malformed URL to the GCP.

I have tried many times, restarting the browser, restarting the computer, same error every time.

Browsing this forum though, I seem to be the only one with the problem.

Any ideas?

Thank you.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error PhotoBiker1968 6/22/12 5:43 PM
Ditto here.

Just started.

Also, I just updated my Garmin Communicator Plugin to something like 4.0.3 for the Mac/Safari.

So there are now two of us.

I am 100% sure this is a Garmin mistake.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error PhotoBiker1968 6/22/12 5:55 PM
FYI:  I filed a ticket with Garmin, but got the standard "Garmin anti customer friendly reply" stating that someone will get back to me in 3 business days, not including holidays and weekends.

Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Fraoch 6/23/12 10:10 AM
Ugh, great.  Good to see it's not just me though.

Does Garmin have a bugtracker-like system where I can "vote" for it to show them I'm having the same problem?

That's not an easy fix.  Having to copy and paste for every waypoint, it's a royal pain in the backside.

I'd love to know if the fault lies with Garmin or Google, it's driving me crazy as I prepare for a trip.

I installed the Garmin Plugin on 6-23-12 @ 1PM, it worked good until 2PM, then I also got the 404 error msg., I reinstalled the Garmin Plugin, rebooted but same 404 error results, any help will be appreciated.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error doonboy 6/26/12 3:40 PM
Same issue. Tried 3 browsers on Win 7 and 2 on Mac. Same results.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error PhotoBiker1968 6/26/12 6:52 PM
Garmin is dragging their feet on this one.

I have received a couple of standard boilerplate replies like:

"Try another browser"

Whew, glad they give out such great ideas.

Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Fraoch 6/27/12 5:55 AM
I've put in a support ticket too, for all the good that'll do.  Maybe if enough people contact them they'll think it's a real issue.

I've asked them to actually try it out rather than cutting and pasting a response.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error doonboy 6/27/12 7:28 AM
Submitted a ticket to Garmin too.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error CYOA 6/27/12 7:51 AM
I was sending Google maps to my Garmin GPS on 6-22-12, then all the sudden on the same day I started getting a "HTTP 404 Error" msg. Several other users are also having this same identical problem that occured on or about that date, I've also sent Garmin a e-mail concerning the issue. If anyone else finds a solution/fix please contact me or post a reply........Thanks

Yea!  Finally got them to try it out.

Dear Glen xxxxxxxx,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I apologize for the issues and would be happy to assist you. This issue has been tested and duplicated on our end. I would be happy to reply to you once the issue is resolved. Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Fraoch 6/28/12 12:35 PM
I got a response today as well, and it's not canned:

"Dear [Fraoch],

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Is this being done on a PC or a Mac? Which web browser were you using? Do you know the version of the web browser?

That was within 24 hours.  I asked him to coordinate with Sam T mentioned above to avoid duplicating effort.

So far I'm actually pretty impressed with Garmin.  Hope they can resolve it.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error dbcollies 6/28/12 7:50 PM
An FYI,

I had the same issue (Firefox 13.0.1 on Mac Snow Leopard). So I tried with Safari. Same machine, same map link, and it worked perfectly.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error RobRod 6/29/12 5:16 AM
I had the same problem on Firefox just last night got 404. I changed over to IE and tried it and got a message saying that the communicator needed to be upgraded after the upgrade and a restart of IE it work fine.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error doonboy 6/29/12 5:16 AM
So I tried Safari and was able to send 2 locations before I got some XML errors. Tried Firefox 12.0 and it works all the time. Still no luck on Windows 7. Any browser.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error yves H 6/30/12 5:26 AM
Hello,

I have had the same problem with Windows XP/Firefox 13.0.1 when updating directly in Firefox from 4.0.1 to 4.0.3. I reinstalled with the installer I had downloaded from the Garmin web site (CommunicatorPlugin_403.exe) and now the problem is solved.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Artnak 7/2/12 7:06 PM
Hello
I'm having the same problem ever since I updated the Communicator Plugin
I also filed a ticket with Garmin and got a response today saying that I should clear my history, cache and temp files in IE9.
Didn't work ..
So I responded to Krunal M (Garmin) saying it didn't work ... now I wait some more.
I hope it's fixed soon. I leave in 2 weeks on vacation, so this is a real bummer.

Thx
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error PhotoBiker1968 7/2/12 7:16 PM
Take a number.

It is amazing that we are able to pinpoint the day and events that this happened, yet Garmin hasn't gotten any closer to figuring this one out.

Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Artnak 7/2/12 8:05 PM
Received another email from Krunal M (Garmin) asking me to try it in another browser, like Google Chrome.
So after it not working in IE9, I tried with my laptop which uses Google Chrome ... still get the HTTP 404 Error

I wonder how long this is going to go on until they realize it's not the browser.

I have the same problem with Google maps but everything works great with MapQuest... Seems to be a google maps transfer problem?
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error skyinajar 7/3/12 4:46 PM
same here with my nuvi 1300 LM. It was working up until yesterday when I downloaded and installed the most recent Garmin Communicator update.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error taneric68 7/3/12 11:47 PM
Same problem here. With IE9, it won't even recognise the plug in eventhough it's been installed. With Chrome, the plug in is detected, but the 404 error appears after you click the "send" to GPS. Just updated the firmware for the GPS too and the USb drivers.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error LarryBelling 7/4/12 1:17 AM
I've just spent some time with Garmin tech support and they say it is a Google issue. I'm going nuts with this as well. One would think that Google would have a tech support line for these major glitches!
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error sanyok 7/4/12 6:20 AM
it worked for me when using mapquest with safari browser on MacBook.  Good luck!
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error CYOA 7/4/12 6:23 AM
I tried using the Map Quest, after I chose a map route to a Target Store I clicked "send" & it showed that the requested map was successfully sent to my nuvi 50LM but I cant find the Target map anywhere on my nuvi 50LM................ ???

I have the same problem. Bought my Garmin 3590 LMT yesterday and it is impossible to transfer POI via PC IE9 XP to the Garmin 3590. Get the same error message as all of you... Error HTTP 404. Sucks.

Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Navigator2012 7/5/12 9:25 AM
I talked to the Garmin support and they provided me with a solution "download the POI LOADER". And so I did. But of course, it did not work. You cant export POI data from Google to POI Loader. So, I called the Garmin support once more. This time they provided me with another solution. They told me to download "BaseCamp" from their website. And they also guaranteed that this time it will work. They told me there is a connection between Google Maps and the new BaseCamp. However, when I had installed the BaseCamp I noticed that this option was not available. It was not possible to transfer anything from Google to BaseCamp and I tried to find ways for hours. Then I called the Garmin Support a third time. And this time the support told me that it is not possible to transfer POI from Google to POI LOADER and neither to the BaseCamp. I asked them once more if there are any possible way to transfer POI to my Garmin from Google (a lot of adverts says so and even ther own home page). The short answear was NO!. This is not possible anymore. They recommended me to type in my adresses manually directly in the device instead. How stupid. So what I noticed with this brand new "world dominating GPS navigator" is that it is missing three major things: 1) Crashes every hour (Garmin will provide a software update this fall), 2) You cant send POI data or addresses from Google Maps to Garmin and 3) The "outstanding" traffic service is not working unless you have an Android phone. There is no built in sim-card and iPhone is not compatible (Garmin says that there will be an iPhone version released this fall).  So with these three issues in mind, I am just about to go back to the store where I bought this Garmin device and return it for a TomTom Live-series. I will have a few bucks back as well and a working GPS navigator. Cant understand how Garming released a new product without having it properly tested first.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error yellow43 7/5/12 12:55 PM
Seems to be working with mapquest.... just copied all my maps to mapquest and sent them on to my nuvi
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Navigator2012 7/5/12 2:38 PM
Yeah, but the issue is not Mapquest/BaseCamp and its functions. The issue is that you can not send POI/ADDRESSES from Google Maps to Garmin anymore. And even if Mapquest/BaseCamp is working that has nothing to do with this error. And the problem/reason is that you can not send any POI to Mapquest/BaseCamp/POILOADER etc from Google anymore. The main issue is that Google is so superior to all other maps that you can find anything on Google Maps, but almost nothing when using the other ones. So you really want to use Google Maps and then transfer POI to your Garmin by clicking "SEND-GPS-GARMIN". And this function has stopped working since the last update. Garmin claims this might be solved some time during this fall 2012.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error MDWeathers 7/5/12 5:08 PM
I have a work-around if you get the "404 Not Found" message on Garmin's site. Someone here mentioned that Garmin claimed it was a problem with URL encoding, so that gave me this idea:

When you get the 404 Not found error, copy the (huge) URL (the address) and paste it into a text editor then find the beginning of the parameters section of the URL (right after "savePOI.htm") and change %3faction=redirect& to just ? in the address. Next, go to this web site: http://my.garmin.com/locate/savePOI.htm - you'll get an "invalid request" error, but it seems to reset something on Garmin's web server. Finally, copy & paste that big long URL from your text editor into the address bar on that page where you go the "invalid request" error.

In other words, change the link from:

   http://my.garmin.com/locate/savePOI.htm%3faction=redirect&a_key=... (very long address)

to:

   http://my.garmin.com/locate/savePOI.htm?a_key=... (very long address)

I don't know if it's Google's fault or Garmin's fault that the URL encoding isn't getting translated correctly. (A %3f is encoding for ? and I removed the "action=redirect" and that seemed to make it work better). So... this is kind of tedious, but at least it works (on both Chrome and Firefox in Windows 7).

Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Navigator2012 7/6/12 12:04 AM
Thanks man! Really cool if your work-around works!!! It sounds logical but I have not been able to try it my self yet due to that Garmins server is currently down for maintenance. I´ll post a new reply here when I have been able to try your work-around.

"Sorry, our site is temporarily down for maintenance.
Please check back soon."

Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Navigator2012 7/6/12 1:28 AM
Wow - fantastic!!! Your solution is working! You are an hero! :-) A brilliant solution that you arranged in less than 5 minutes. You outsmarted both Garmin and Google. I don´t think they even found whats wrong yet, or if something is wrong.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error yellow43 7/6/12 5:14 AM
well you could also save all your points to single google map, then export the KML convert it to a cvs  http://www.poieditor.com/poi_convert/kml-to-garmin-csv/ then load them using poi loader.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error TechLauren 7/6/12 8:30 AM
I've been sending to Garmin from Google Maps for years but I get the 404 error in both FF 13 and ie 9 on Windows 7. I tried installing the plugin from the stand alone link too but no luck in anyway. I have a trip tomorrow and got up at 4am to get all the addresses in my Garmin. Now I've got nothing :(
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Fraoch 7/6/12 11:43 AM
So it's going to take Garmin UNTIL THE FALL to fix something so simple?  Jeez.

Thanks for the instructions.  Wish Garmin would follow them.  :-P
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error Fraoch 7/6/12 11:56 AM
BTW if you have the issue and report it on this thread please open a support ticket with Garmin.  They don't seem to be devoting enough resources to fix it.

If they get 20-30-40 support tickets about the same thing they may just decide it's worth fixing.

This morning I tried IE 8.  I couldn't install the Garmin Communicator Plugin at all, my system errored out at the end and wouldn't recognize the install.  So it's broken in every way for me.  Thanks to MDWeathers for the simple fix, I'll have to rely on that for the time being.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error skyinajar 7/6/12 2:09 PM
For anyone interested in what didn't work: I ran a MS Malicious software removal,  uninstalled / reinstalled Chrome
and all of Garmin software, together with a system restore to a day when it did work on my XP SP3,  and
the problem did not change.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error missakins 7/9/12 4:59 AM
I found that if I kept the http://my.garmin.com/locate/savePOI.htm link open in my browser and then clicked back it made the page 'reload' and that on the next send operation I did not have to edit the URL.
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error alfredocheissoux 7/9/12 10:12 AM
Hi all

I have same issue and have tried Chrome, Firefox and Safari and all show same beahaviour.
The following is my details as submitted to Garmin:
My hardware:
nüvi 1340 lifetime maps
iMac 20in OS X 10.7.4
Safari 5.1.7
Garmin Communicator PlugIn 4.0.3

When using Google maps send to GARMIN GPS function the my.garmin.com website returns the following error message:

"An HTTP 404 Error has occurred. The page you requested does not exist."

THIS IS VERY ANNOYING since it worked perfectly with
Garmin Communicator PlugIn 4.0.1 and 2
On your forum there are many people writing about this: my question is what can I do about it with or without your help.
Please note that it is VERY BAD PRACTICE FOR SOFTWARE UPDATES TO LOOSE FUNCTIONALITIES!
Normally software is improved not made worse!!
Please please reply to this email since I do many road trips and cannot use my Garmin nuvi 1340 anymore

Good luck to us all with Garmin CUSTOMER CARE!!!
Re: Send to Garmin GPS results in 404 error CYOA 7/9/12 10:40 AM
MapQuest Maps can be used as a alternative to Google Maps. The sent map will be in "My Data" Import Maps. As in Google when it's working you can only send/receive the default map, I've never been able to send/receive a preferred route in Google or MapQuest. I can send  preferred map, but I receive the default map & sometimes it's no better than the Garmin Navteq Maps.
If you have Lifetime Maps with your nuvi 1340 LM why do you need maps from Google or elsewhere ?
