|Hangouts is not ready for prime time; how can I downgrade back to Google Talk on my android phone?||mps.yodle||5/30/13 2:53 PM|
I am gung-ho for almost everything Google but the recent changes to Google Talk are atrocious. UX is awful and I want to go back to the version that worked before this one. Please help me. I know you all do fantastic stuff but this one needs more work. Everyone at my office and my family that rely on Talk are frustrated right now. I want to be able to provide a solution to them. Thanks.

Ok, my friend figured it out and it was super simple. All that has to be done on an Android phone is to go to the Play market, hit the 'menu' button and go to 'My apps'. Once there, click on 'All apps' and find Hangouts. Press uninstall and say 'OK' when asked if you want to uninstall all of the app updates on this android application. Once it's done uninstalling you will have the old Talk back, although the interface looks slightly different. *ahhh, fresh air!

I'm sorry to see that you are not satisfied with Hangouts.
Please have a look at our FAQ about reverting back to Google Talk https://productforums.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!category-topic/hangouts/XoWmdBtAIX4

Hi Nick, Please see the attached screenshot.
Even when I click on "OK, got it", it shows briefly "Something's wrong" and then is come back to the same messgae "Welcome to new Google+ Hangouts"
I tried enough times to be able to read a few words on the brief flashing message and it says something about servers not connecting.
I know I do not have a connection problems because I have another 3 Google accounts and hangout works well in the other accounts.
What do you suggest?

thank you! good riddance to hangouts.

It appears no one like the regression of Gtalk which has ben my favorite chat client for years now.. I'm soooo sad about this. When I saw there was an update for Gtalk I was super excited. I found a glitch to still view online contacts but the 1.0.2 update of hangouts broke that. *CRY*

Thank you so much for your answer to this questions, it was very helpfull, now I'm back to the old good one GTalk, thx!
|mps.yodle||6/19/13 8:28 PM|
You're welcome! Glad to see this thread is helping other people who had the same desire to revert to the old google talk. I'm usually pretty excited about Google's updates but this one missed the mark. I'm hoping I the engineers hear the feedback and bring back the stability and features of the old version.

I just reverted back to GTalk on my android phone but it seems that I have lost the ability to see when a friend is "available" or "away" in my contacts list like I used to. Is there any way to get it back?
|Sandeep Jalawadi||7/7/13 12:07 PM|
Thats great.... thanks for sharing... Old Gtalk is back... #thanks...
|Aditya Sarin||7/31/13 9:09 AM|
hey! I uninstalled hangouts but my nexus 4 wont let me reinstall talk...any ideas?
|Jen Ritchie||7/31/13 10:13 AM|
I'm sure many people have seen the other threads about this, but just in case: Android version 4.3 completely removes Talk as a system app, making 'downgrading' to Talk impossible.
It's only an issue for people with Nexus-type devices right now, since those are the first to get OS upgrades, but eventually the new version will trickle down to other newer phones (that the manufacturer/carrier/etc decide to upgrade).
|LouiseY||8/1/13 8:51 AM|
I found this out only too late as there was no warning the upgrade would install hangouts. I am very angry and have increasingly lost trust in Google. Upgrades should spell out clearly what they will do and what they will affect, so users can make an informed choice. I too would value a way to return to Googletalk.
|Stringrazor||8/2/13 10:54 PM|
Oh, thank God! I'm still on 4.2.2 and was able to simply uninstall the HORRID, LAME, USELESS piece of waste that is being called Google Hangounts for Android. I didn't even have to go to PLAY. Just Settings, Apps, All Apps, G. Hangouts, Uninsta;; Updates. Gtalk is back and the same as it used to be. I will inhibit auto updates to everything Google from now on. Never again!
|armisis||8/13/13 6:30 PM|
Thank you!!! I gave Hangouts a fair shot, but its like going back 10 years! No just voice coms, no way to be invisible. Its horrible. Why did they try to re-invent the wheel, Talk was perfect all they had to do is add in multi-person video chat into talk, not change anything else... I'm reverting as soon as I get off work back to talk!
|armisis||8/13/13 6:34 PM|
I'm backing out of Hangouts too, its a bad attempt at re-inventing the wheel... Talk should have just had mult-person-video added, that is all that was needed... Hangouts is a major backward step removing all the wonderful capabilities that Talk had. Please please please pull hangouts untill it is BETTER than talk not worse. :) Your Google not Microsoft we expect something better. ;)

Sadly, the uninstall method no longer works on Android 4.3.
The Hangouts app is as bad as ever, a number of shortcomings, and now it is permanently embedded into Android.
|Raven Hart||9/9/13 7:19 AM|
I can't get rid of Hangouts. I tried the option mentioned in a link to click on my icon and choose the option to revert back to Google Talk, and have done so. On my chat icon it now has an option to try out Hangouts, which I do NOT click.
However, when I chat with someone, it is called "Hangout with ******", and it is not individually stored like it was with Google Talk. Now if I want to refer back to something that we chatted about, I have to scroll through an long conglomeration of ALL the chats we have had.
This is unacceptable. I do NOT want Hangout, and I want my chats to be stored separately as they were before.
Please advise. Thank you.

To everyone wondering how to revert to Talk, you must root your phone first and then get the Talk apk installed. For more information please visit XDA Developers.

Had I known about this I would not have switched from iPhone to droid... I was trying to get away from Apple's no discussion BS... apparently Google has decided to join them in it.

Only open & update.
Which i dont want to.
Pls help in uninstalling hangout.
GT-I8552 is my handheld model number.
Provide a solution
|hoogla doogla||11/3/13 3:24 AM|
In this case you can only deactivate this crappy software over Settings > Apps > All > Hangouts > uninstall updates. Now you get "deactivate" at the same position where "uninstall updates" was before.
|dafaq||11/3/13 9:04 PM|
the issue is following
after hangouts forcedly logs to some free wifi, it does not sign me off properly, therefore it keeps me in IDLE forever
tehrefore when I come to PC i am unable to change my astatus to invisible, BECAUSE IT says i am logged in from another deivce
and that is colossal lie..
how to ged rid of new hangouts and install back GOOD OLD GTALK?
it worked perfektly with GOOD OLD GTALK DAMMIT
Please provide your OS, browser or mobile app version, and any other details that you consider relevant, so we can address your issue or question quickly.

did you ever figure it out? I need to get talk back and cant
|Sol Marrero||12/4/13 9:22 AM|
not true. I uninstalled the update and only option is open or update. I can't get google talk back. please help
|xpertxpert||12/18/13 2:46 PM|
This is beyond awful. I was a big fan of Google services; however, recent changes are making me consider alternatives. The One Logon system is terrible, and forcing Hangouts in the 4.3 update is just annoying. Hangouts is awful. Since there is no solution for an unrooted phone, I have opted to simply discontinue use. Google, if your goal is to get people to stop using your products, congratulations.
|Sturner100000||12/23/13 11:40 AM|
So it's possible to get talk back by changing the gapps files in the system/apps folder, but it doesn't help. Even if you get the program installed now, it wont let you log in. Is google preventing this deliberately?
All I want is to see if someone has set their gchat status to "away" or is "idle" Simply showing if they are online is hiding most of the important information. Also, why remove invisible status? What if I only want to chat with one person without being interrupted by others? They have basically turned the hangouts chat function into another version of text messaging.... but we already have text messaging... so why would anyone want this?
|Sturner100000||12/23/13 11:46 AM|
Of course, this is no longer possible in android 4.3 and greater. Obviously google itself is not going to fix it - they seem to have some motivation for removing the chat functionality from a stock app. Does anyone even know _why_ google doesn't want us to have the ability to quickly determine the status (i.e away, or idle) of a contact? What is the motivation for removing the ability to be "invisible" so that we can easily chat with a single contact without being interrupted by others? In the main window of hangouts, where the ongoing conversations are listed, it isn't even possible to see if a contact is currently online. I think the most frustrating thing is that I dont even understand why google would want to remove all this functionality.

Hi,i am using android 4.3.I followed the procedure you said to downgrade to gtalk to get rid of this hangouts.But it's not working.(All that has to be done on an Android phone is to go to the Play market, hit the 'menu' button and go to 'My apps'. Once there, click on 'All apps' and find Hangouts. Press uninstall and say 'OK' when asked if you want to uninstall all of the app updates on this android application. Once it's done uninstalling you will have the old Talk back, although the interface looks slightly different.)..Please suggest me how to get back to the great Gtalk.

I'm also facing a new mobile phone that doesn't allow to deleted hangout or revert to Gtalk.... Please don't fore people using beta software like Hangout and allow us to revert to our favorites like Gtalk.
|CR3432||1/7/14 8:59 AM|
I'd just like to echo this comment. I prefer gchat for the following reasons: 1. its invisibility option (the snooze option in hangout doesn't capture the same benefits... being able to communicate with a few people of your choosing while everyone else thinks you're not there); 2. the ability to see everyone and their red/green/yellow status; and 3. the ability to message people who also might be invisible (and if they're not, they'll just get a notification saying you messaged them.) Invisibility was really the core component for me. I'm planning to stay signed out of the Hangout on my phone (apparently I can't uninstall it?) and keep the gchat feature on my computer as long as I can until you guys change that to Hangout too, in which case I'll uninstall that and/or stay signed out. I understand that you're trying to push Hangout because it's a new way to communicate, but some of us prefer the style of communication offered via gchat (which Hangout does not do as well). Gchat and Hangout don't have to be mutually exclusive.
I'd also recommend offering a Google contact option to people other than a message board. I think you'd get a lot of valuable feedback from people who aren't willing to go through to rigmarole of signing up for message boards. Most people I know prefer Google Talk to Hangout, but they don't have a way to let Google know that. It's a lose-lose for everyone.

Recently I upgraded my Samsung galaxy III to the latest 4.3 OS which removed google talk and replaced it with google hangouts. Unfortunately, the lack of status updates renders hangouts not useful for me and since I cannot revert back to google talk now, I am stuck. The background profile that the hangout created has also ruined my desktop chat app..."it now says, You are not invisible because you're logged into Google Talk from another".So I attempted to uninstall it. It won't uninstall since its a 4.3 stock application now (horror!), so then I cleared cache and turned off the application. I logged out. I wiped the phone back to factory settings!!!! I cannot find where the device is even logged into chat so why does it still says this. So I can't uninstall it, can't log out, can't get rid of background profile and cannot mark myself as invisible when I use desktop chat. I don't see why google can't just add some status updates to hangouts to help make it more useful for some of us.
I even started petition...http://www.change.org/petitions/google-inc-add-status-updates-to-google-hangouts-app
