Mac OS X 10.8.5 - MacBook Air 2013 - Video camera does not turn on for Hangout Muthazhagu Palanisamy 9/12/13 9:04 PM
Hi -
OS: Mac OS X 10.8.5 - updated today, Thursday, 12-Sep-2013.
Browser: Firefox, Chrome, Safari - problem can be recreated in all three browsers.

Message in Hangout Settings says "We've detected a problem. Video camera not detected."

Voice goes through fine, and I am able to hear, and see people. People are not able to see me via Hangout (they are able to hear me).

Video camera actually works fine with FaceTime - so not a hardware problem.

This was working until I upgraded to 10.8.5. Something in the upgrade likely causing a problem.

Any idea on fix? Are more people reporting this problem?

Thank you for your time.

Muthu

Re: Mac OS X 10.8.5 - MacBook Air 2013 - Video camera does not turn on for Hangout jrt22 9/13/13 6:34 AM
I had the same exact issue, using the mid-2013 MacBook Air 13-inch 8GB RAM 1.7 GHz Intel Core i7 128GB SSD. After updating to 10.8.5, neither Skype nor Hangouts would recognize my camera. The camera still works fine in FaceTime, PhotoBooth, and Messages.

I contacted Apple last night, and they said that they were unaware of the problem, but that I should contact Skype and Google about software updates. I ended up restoring a Time Machine backup to 10.8.4 so that I could use the camera in Skype and Hangouts.

Hi,

My sister's brand new Macbook Air 13" had the same issue and is resolved by temporary solution suggested in this apple discussion:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5306216?start=0&tstart=0

From the original poster Sebastian from Skype forum:

1. You need Time Machine

2. Go to folder /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/

3. Copy AppleCamera.plugin to good place (usb memory stick is the best place).

4. Go to Time machine in date that skype work fine.

5. Change AppleCamera.plugin with file from Time Machine

6. Restart system, Now skype need to work with camera.

This solution is only for this time until Apple make update for this problem!!!

If you don't have time machine backup download the plugin from this link: AppleCamera.plugin.zip ‏956 KB

The recent OSX 10.8.5 update will prevent Hangouts (as well as Skype, etc) from accessing the built-in camera on MacBook Air computers. As a workaround, users should either use an external webcam with their MacBook Air or a different computer.

Apple has posted a known issue about it here: support.apple.com/kb/TS4552

Can you confirm that this works for Hangouts?

It works for GoToMeeting for me, but not Hangouts :(

Hi,

On 2013 MacBook Air 13", on Mac OSX 10.8.5,
I can confirm that the workaround to switch Applecamera.plugin works for Skype and Google Hangouts.

Re: Mac OS X 10.8.5 - MacBook Air 2013 - Video camera does not turn on for Hangout David Chg 9/18/13 9:23 PM
This might work for those who didn't have time machine before.

To work with Google Hangouts:

1) Have the person with Mac Air run Facetime.
2) Run Google Hangout, and share the screen of Facetime to the person you are talking to on Google Hangout

Now the other person can see you.

Hopefully this will work till they get a fix on.

Same problem here. Brand new Macbook Air 2013, MacOS 10.8.5. Last update broke video in hangouts (camera not found). Everything works in Photo Booth.

Did someone tested it on canary (beta) releases of Chrome?

Same problem :( Is this something that we can expect google or apple to fix in the near future?

I also got this problems, I hope the fix will come out as soon as possible, I already abandoned Facebook and other calling services,
I am only using Google+ and Hangouts, if this didn't fixed , I will need to revert back and I dont want it.

I hope the team will handle this and mark it as priority.

I have the same problem - my webcam isn't recognised by skype or google hangouts on my 2013 Macbook Air, OS X 10.8.5.  The webcam works fine on Facetime so it's not a hardware issue. What's the best fix?
Re: Mac OS X 10.8.5 - MacBook Air 2013 - Video camera does not turn on for Hangout John Jerger 10/3/13 8:26 AM
I followed the posted link: support.apple.com/kb/TS4552 and it was less than helpful.

It suggests that I update my non Apple app that is having problems. Does anyone know if Google
has a new version of Hangouts that can be downloaded that solves the problem.

Does anyone know if Apple is working on a patch to OSX to fix the issue.

Thanks.

Well, I found a solution a while ago, and at least it helps with the camera in skype.

In a terminal window, write the command

sudo killall VDCAssistant

Just enter your password, and that's it. Restart Skype and the built in camera works just fine. In case you don't know, the terminal is accessed in the utilities under applications.

Cheers,

Guillermo.

Hi,

Did you receive the update on your macbook air from the app store updates section? Or was this an update from google hangouts? I'm assuming the former but just wanted to confirm.

Thanks,
Ashley

I'm not a geek, but may have stumbled upon a solution.. Couldn't get camera to work with skype for 3 wks, While trying to reload old skype downloads to match my wifes macbook air, which was working, I stumbled across a site to download the entire moutain lion OS and the time download. I had already loaded the 10.8.5  supp, so tried the mnt lion os. Takes 1 hr 20 minutes. When it got done ,camera worked in skype. Think maybe updates sent in July/aug 2013 must have messed up something, and the original os returned those items .  Hope this helps. sure won't hurt.  also, didn't write site where I found mtn os download, but found it thru google looking for skype donwnloads

What's strange is that I can restart and it will work fine for at least one hangout - then its blown after that
Re: Mac OS X 10.8.5 - MacBook Air 2013 - Video camera does not turn on for Hangout LOB52 12/12/13 1:24 AM
This solution, restarting the machine, was fine with me, but I have to do it every time I enter Hangouts.

Even restarting doesn't work sometimes... I've had to switch to Skype

Right- I restarted and it worked three days ago.  The patch referenced above does not work for me as I am running Mavericks.  Is there a known patch or plugin for Mavericks yet?

That's not resolved for me. MacBook Air, late 2013 on Mavericks. It is also not working with Safari, seems to be system bug.

It worked for me, I can now use Hangouts, Skype.

All...https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5306216?tstart=0

go down the page and you will see the applecamerapluggin....down load it and put it in the correct file...

CHROME is 32 bit...skype also imovie too.....but the lastest apple Mountain Lion Update doesn't include the 32 bit driver for the isight camera so these apps cant use it...

Follow the instructions on the page above...basically unzip the file and copy it into the Library>coremedialO>Plug-ins>Dal and FCP-Dal folders....

THIS IS THE FIX......or just bitch google until they put out a 64 bit browser...if you upgrade to Maverick, skype, imovie are both upgraded to 64 bit...but CHROME IS STILL NOT.....

It doesn't work in Safari or FIrefox either so I don't think Chrome is the issue
