How can I record a Google + hangout and keep it private? Sven Georgiev 11/4/12 4:36 AM
Hi,

I would like to hold a business meeting via a Hangout? Through the "On Air" option, the hangout will be recorded and uploaded to your own Youtube channel and the Goole+ post for the Hangout. I think I got that.
However: my question is whether I can keep the recording private. I read that the recording is uploaded in private mode by Google and you have to change it to public if you want everyone to be able to access it. So by default it is privat. Then you can send a link to the people who you want to be able to see the recording. Only they will be able to see it. Is this correct? If not - how can I keep the recording private? Also: do I get a file of the recording?

Thanks

Hi

You can record a Hangout On Air and the default setting for recordings on YouTube is set to 'public' - but once the Hangout is finished and the video has processed in your account, you can change this to 'private.'or 'Unlisted' prefer Unlisted

please take a look to this article

If it's important that the Hangout not be seen by the public, you probably do not want to do a Hangout on Air, because while it's broadcasting and recording, the public could watch it.

You could run your meeting using a regular Hangout (not a Hangout on Air) and record it using 3rd party screen capture software, like Camtasia or similar. That recorded video could then be uploaded to YouTube.

I recorded this video chat before they had Hangouts on Air about a year ago using Smart Screen Recorder.  It's free if you leave the watermark on.  It records mic plus the desktop sound directly.  Go about 11 minutes into the video:  https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3kGDdsgcTG3RHpPZUhid25nSDA/edit

I have the same concern Sven - is there a way to "broadcast" livve but privately? what if i want to broadcast the hangout but not to the whole world - what if i have a group of people (like 50) who I would like to watch it? do i have any control over that?

@all,

Right now there is no option to broadcast to a limited audience or to record a hangout without broadcasting publicly. However, you may be able to use a 3rd party tool to record a regular hangout.  These are both feature requests the team is aware of.

Thanks,
Dori

Is there an audio dial in?

@George Webb, currently we don't have the functionality for participants to dial into a Hangout, however each Hangout participant can invite up to 1 phone participant by calling out to that participant: http://support.google.com/plus/answer/2520614?hl=en-GB

Hope that helps.

Making it public by default does not sound a great plan from Google. But private is!

It is insane that the default would be to publicly broadcast whatever is being recorded.  How many really want to broadcast everything to the world.  Seems really really stupid.  Especially since hangout is an excellent tool for business and even teaching.

Regular Hangouts are private, and not broadcast anywhere. They are indeed a good tool for teaching or business meetings.

It's only Hangouts on Air that are broadcast publicly.

Yes but I am talking about recording hangouts.  As far as I can tell there is no way to record them privately without using a 3rd party app.  I would like to be able to record my lessons for my students and my students only as the are private one on one lessons.

@jensen allsop, you're correct - there isn't currently a way to record a private Hangout without using a 3rd party tool. To be able to record private Hangouts is a much requested feature that the team is aware of.

The private hangout recording feature is also good for Google as many can indirectly help Google to promote their Google+ hangout, not just our products and services. We don't mind the watermark of Google+ anyway. When the meeting is going on, many wouldn't know what may happen in the meeting until the it is finished. Most people prefer to review the content of the video before deciding whether to publish it on YouTube. Private hangout recording really makes a lot of sense. We hope Google can release this feature rather than expecting us to use 3rd party software which may be risky and costly to some others. The more people can afford, the more people can help to promote and support Google+ too. This is a great win-win approach.
