Explain your issue in full detail here:

Over the last few days I am becomming irritated by the seemingly random trimming of emails in Gmail - how do I switch this feature off?

Can you be more specific about what you mean by "trimming".  I don't think that's any feature of Gmail.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! JAP200 11/16/11 11:31 AM
Thank you.

What I mean is that when I look at an email I only see part of a message followed by three dots. If you hover the mouse over the dots the words 'show trimmed content' appears.

Sometime it is ridiculous and trims 2-line emails down to one line. I want to be able to read the whole of a message without having to click on the dots to show it.
This never used to happen - its just a recent change. Also it doesn't happen with every message - it's apparently random!

Searching in this forum it seems like a lot of other people have the same question and no one has offered a satisfactory solution yet. I would be delighted if you could.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bkc56 11/16/11 12:55 PM
OK, I understand.

The "trimmed content" is typically quoted text from a previous message (identical content) and so they hide it so what's initially visible is only the NEW content.  Most people don't need to see the message they just sent that the person is replying to.  They just want to see the actual reply (new content).

I don't know of a way to turn that function off other than clicking the dots each time to see the duplicate information.

This recently appeared in my Gmail in the last few days and is driving me nuts too. It needs to be removed or an option added to get rid of it. Please don't tell me which of MY content is important to me. You'll be wrong 99% of the time.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bkc56 11/17/11 1:24 PM
This recently appeared in my Gmail in the last few days...

Unlikely as this feature has always been there.  It's just that before it was called "- Show quoted text -" (or Hide).  Now it's just three faint dots.  But it's the same functionality as has always been there - that didn't change.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! cohler59 11/24/11 7:05 PM
No, you are wrong bkc56. If you read what crockettj wrote, you will see that crockettj is NOT talking about quoted material in replies, which is a completely different subject.

bkc56 is correct in saying that this feature has only appeared very recently and it is very annoying and it has nothing to do with quoted material in message replies.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! taxskill 12/7/11 6:01 PM
For me, this is a disaster.  I have emails I sent which are reduced to two lines and the rest of my original content is gone.  Hover over the ellipsis and it says  "Show trimmed content", but nothing happens.  I have important information in threads of emails that is completely missing.  Please tell me how to stop trimming my emails.

Please Also Include:
Operating system (e.g. WinXP): Windows Vista

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! fezzaa 12/8/11 10:45 AM
And it would be so easy to solve. Just give me the option under settings to "not trim messages and always show all content".
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! psder 12/9/11 5:30 AM
Same here. " I have emails I sent which are reduced to two lines and the rest of my original content is gone"

An e-mail is NOT a post in facebook!!!!!

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! mslehman 12/10/11 12:57 PM
This is so irritating.  I want Gmail to hide quoted text, but I do not want it to hide random sections of a new email in a conversation!  I just want it back to the way it was a month ago, before this change that did nothing but cause inconveniences for me.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! newshnd 12/13/11 8:04 PM
I am having the same problem and yes it is much worse than it used to be.  We need an option to turn it off and Google needs to look at its algorithm for trimming and fix it.

Still no answer/solution! This is ridiculous! It's not just trimming quoted text from a previous email. In conversations back and forth it's trimming NEW content from the emails that I sent. I don't want to have to click "..." every time just to see what I said! It didn't used to do this.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! taxskill 12/29/11 6:46 AM
It is even worse now.  GMail is trimming content from emails I send.  When I go in my sent file I only see 2 lines of the email I sent.  I am checking with the recipient to see if they got the whole message or just two lines.  Why isn't Gmail responding to this issue?  How do I contact GMail to get an answer?
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! John C Abell 12/30/11 7:44 AM
GMail trimmed an e-mail I sent from the FT in such a way as to conceal the shared link. It should not be keying to anything which is not a standard formulation for quoted material — if it should be doing that at all. In my case, teh e-mail was trimmed at the first appearance of a double dash -- which the FT had used for style purposes.

This is an unqualified design fail on Google's part.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! asl22 1/5/12 5:38 PM
I am new to Gmail and I just realized that a few times my name (ie where I sign off at the end of outgoing email) is gone when I reread what I've sent. I click on the dots and see my name is there in a light shade of gray. Does this mean it is not visible to  the person receiving the email?? This is so bizarre I have no idea what purpose it serves.
Can someone answer that simple question? I hate to think my emails are going out without my name at the bottom.
Thanks so much.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bkc56 1/5/12 6:40 PM
Does this mean it is not visible to  the person receiving the email?

No.  The trimming is totally local to your account to (hopefully) help you see the content and not the stuff that's duplicated on multiple messages.  The user will see the full message.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! mslehman 1/5/12 7:52 PM
asl22: What bkc56 said is not true, and that is what everyone in this thread is complaining about... the new gmail is trimming all sorts of important stuff from messages, and things like signatures are trimmed (i.e. hidden until you click the button, then displayed in light gray), so your recipients are likely seeing the same trimmed version that you are seeing.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bkc56 1/5/12 9:00 PM
then displayed in light gray), so your recipients are likely seeing the same trimmed version that you are seeing.

If they don't use GMail, then that's not physically possible (obviously).

If they are using Gmail, then they have the same type of local trimming going on that you do, and can expand it the same way.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! ChrisPeach 1/6/12 3:55 PM
This is actually causing me potentially dangerous issues at work. Have you ever replied or forwarded a group emailing, and perhaps want to carefully EDIT OUT something someone said that for your sake and theirs you best remove? No? Then this feature is for you.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! taxskill 1/8/12 7:22 AM
Dear Google:
Please stop this trimming nonsense.  It is useless.  It wastes time.  After I have sent an email I want to see EXACTLY what my recipient sees.  That is a final proof to make sure I have sent everything I need to send.  As a professional I have a disclaimer on my email signature, and need to make sure I sent the correct one.  I also want to make sure I have deleted or not deleted or edited the thread that goes along with the email.  Every email is a different situation and needs to be handled uniquely.

Will we ever get a response from Gmail in this thread?
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! EJ Apps 1/10/12 12:28 AM
This feature does more then only hide quoted text from a previous message.

In a lot of emails the Signature is not visible. Also when u use canned responses it is not always visible and people receive an email without text. To see the text they have to click "..." button.

Hopefully will get the ability to change these settings soon!

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Jiang-Hu 1/10/12 1:31 AM
My issue is that I don't want my name when I sign off to appear as if it's part of the quoted text.

It's really embarrassing for work related emails, if the recipient is also using gmail.  This is because it appears that I have forgotten to put my name on the bottom of the email after "Sincerely:", unless the recipient clicks on the "Show Trimmed Content".

How do I make my name (or the last line of the message) still show up with my own reply?  Thanks in advance.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! reboooot 1/13/12 1:34 AM
It saddens me to see this thread  go on so long without Google listening and making this a setting we can turn on or off.

Gmail trimmed my email to a supplier, as a result of which he never got to read what I had sent(except the attached pics),because he probably did not click on the "show trimmed content" thingy, and I in turn kept waiting for his reply. It cost us 9 man days:)

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! ShellyDirects 1/20/12 10:21 PM
This trimming is crazy.  Gmail used to be so good.  Now, it's changing my emails by trimming them.  Also, it makes the last line (or two) of my email in gray text.

I DON'T WANT THAT!!!  IF I DID, I WOULD DO IT MYSELF!!!!!!!!

GOOGLE, STOP CHANGING MY EMAILS TO THE WAY YOU WANT THEM!!!!!

I DO NOT WANT THEM CHANGED, TRUNCATED, TRIMMED, OR IN A DIFFERENT COLOR FONT!!!!!!

ARE YOU TRYING TO DRIVE USERS AWAY???

I hate to shout, but these changes have affected my business emails in very bad ways.  I've sent myself emails to a different account to check, and important information was truncated/trimmed, and changed into gray font, when I typed it the same as the whole rest of the email!!!

STOP CHANGING MY EMAILS!!

I TYPE THEM THE WAY I WANT THEM TO BE SEEN!!!  NOT SHORTENED OR CHANGED TO A DIFFERENT COLOR!!

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! carlosutdwaa 1/22/12 12:32 PM
I found a temporary fix. Although not ideal, it will have to do for now.

Go into general settings and scroll down to your signature, make sure you clear the signature box, hit enter twice so you have two spaces then put two hyphens in the box - - save the settings and compose a new email.

Unfortunately you will have to manually enter your signature at the end of your email, except now it won't get greyed out or trapped in the expand content box.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! mslehman 1/22/12 1:04 PM
Carlosutdwaa - Unfortunately, that is not a fix for the problem most of us are having - Gmail is not just trimming signatures, it seems to just randomly trim the end of some emails, regardless what is there.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! corpg.mailuser 1/26/12 4:55 PM
I've submitted my feature request that there be an option in Settings to disable Trimming.  On a side note, is the popularity of tablets destroying desktop UI?

PLEASE allow settings to disable signature trimming! This is ridiculously lame.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! silvaim 1/31/12 7:52 AM
+1

Please add disable function to this "Show trimmed/Hide expanded content".

Sometime I need to forward emails and I don't like the text to be hidden just because it is duplicated.

Thanks!

If you see above your text  --   symbol that text part will be trimmed!

If you want to show your signature just delete this -- lines above it.

Hope it helps, it is annoying to do this way, but I haven't find other way to disable it.

I've created a petition for this issue. Please sign it with your Google or Google Apps email account. Maybe if we get enough people to sign, Google will start to care.

If you like, distribute the link to those who are part of your domains and post it on facebook. If there are suggestions for the description, I can listen to some of those too.

Like most people here I don't like the trimming, but I have an additional problem.  Until about a week ago I could click on the dots to show the content that had been trimmed.  Now nothing happens when I click the dots.  Any suggestions?
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bkc56 3/2/12 8:13 PM
Now nothing happens when I click the dots.

What browser and release number are you using now (Help->About)?  What other browsers have you tested to see if it makes things work as desired?  What else have you done to try and fix it, like clearing your browser's cache/cookies and restarting?

I agree, this feature is totally intrusive and has really mucked up some of my emails!  I have been sending itemized lists to people, only to find it has cut off half of the list!  People on the other end are not always savvy enough, or don't always take the time to check the quoted text.

This should be an optional feature, and should be DEACTIVATED by DEFAULT.

I have wasted time and money with copywriters, web designers, and clients because of this silly default feature.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! aspeer 3/6/12 2:17 PM
I had the trimming problem occurring on a table of an HTML newsletter. It was very important that the entire table display because it was the #1 content our client wanted to communicate. Here's the fix, or at least here's how we solved our problem. We eliminated any repetition. So for this table, the lines in between each row, Gmail was seeing the lines as repetitive. So I altered the pixel width by 1 px every other line, which eliminated the repetition and fixed our problem. So that said, look for repetition, and try to remove it. OR in some cases, you might have to add type (in white) to create the variation. Unfortunately, this new Gmail feature sucks; it forces us to create clunky workarounds. We should be able to control the content of our own emails, not the other way around. Also, this new feature has opened up the door for shoddy email marketing (where some marketers are hiding their unsubscribe links from customers by creating enough repetition so the link gets hidden.)
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bbbbbbbbbbbbbaaa 3/6/12 2:36 PM

I have the same problem. Since i have to save my emails as pdf as a part of project documentation, it's irritating that although using the "expand all" feature in the email, i still have to scroll through the whole mail so i would expand all trimmed content. For the project documentation whole message must be visible, so manually scrolling through the mails i'm just wasting my time to correct something gmail did automatically. Hope there is a bypass so i can automatically expand all emails, including trimmed content!

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! oldversionplease 4/22/12 12:34 AM
agreed agreed! I hate this trim feature and it's faulty. I received brand new email today 2 lines with person sending their contact info in signature. WAs completely "trimmed".   Thought he didnt sent it and he had to resend before I could figure out clicking on 3 dots borught it up. NEVER had problem of not being able to read entire email (though this was a 2 liner!!) in one pane. Now must go through extra steps. HORRIBLE.

Also: cant read header time sent, sender, etc. for all email details and now again must go thorugh exra step of using drop down arrow to view. Also makes it imossible to print entire email as message details are in separate pane-so must print out twice with no entire email print option available.

Bring back old Gmail please!

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Prikolist 4/26/12 7:43 AM
So, half a year later, Google's response is nowhere to be seen. Clearly it's a feature they are bent on keeping and not giving us any control over. As well as any other unwelcome changes like hiding header information. Well, I have a solution for you - don't use the Gmail website, use IMAP/POP with Thunderbird or whatever email client you like. And tell everyone you know to do the same if they want to see entire messages as they were meant to be seen. Of course, you'll be sacrificing many great features that are what attracted people to Gmail in the first place. But, you will hit Google where it hurts - they can't earn any money off you if they can't show you ads. Maybe then they will remember that they should listen to their customers.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! munsterr 4/27/12 6:35 AM

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! JoeDC 5/22/12 3:54 PM
Yeah, this is ruining my work too. Almost everyone uses Gmail because it's so good, but that means that this problem affects almost everyone I know, and that "..." button is too easy to miss! Even when people see the button, they often do not click it unless they have encountered its irritations before too.

My work involves drafting and re-drafting text, entering corrections in places, and leaving other sections untouched. Unfortunately Gmail often ends up hiding the ends of drafts, which leads to confusion; other people assume I've decided to trim the last section of text. If they then send a new edit back to me without that last section, I might assume *they* have trimmed the section, at which point the mix-up can become permanent.

I don't know who finds this automatic hiding of text useful, but it's hard for me to understand who it benefits. I want a warning when I hit Send: "Sections of your message are identical to earlier text in the conversation, and will be hidden to the recipient -- yes, no", or something along those lines.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Spuddermax 6/13/12 10:33 AM
Yes, this feature definitely needs a toggle option. My wife was editing a forwarded email for her business, and not being one of the Google developers who created this, she didn't realize what the three little dots do. Anyway, she almost lost out on her commission because the client was looking at the content my wife inadvertently forwarded along with her edits. I think I might transition her out of gmail and into roundcube or something as it doesn't appear Google wants to add an option to disable this.

Is there ANY work-around for this? This is a disaster.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Jimbio 6/19/12 7:57 AM
What if the reciever also has a g-mail account?

There has GOT to be a work-around for this.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Spuddermax 6/19/12 9:09 AM
I've found a workaround from my end. I've enabled imap access to my gmail account and then setup Thunderbird as an imap client to access my emails. This means I don't have the convenience of webmail, but I don't have to deal with the annoyances of the gmail interface anymore. No more hidden content. Since I have my own web server that I run, I'm also looking into a webmail imap client that I can host for myself. Something like roundcube might do the trick. Doesn't help the receiver though.

I just voted ...signature trimming is ridiculous....when I am sending out emails I want the recipient to see all of my signature info and it avoids me having to write my name 100 times a day. I work for a virtual company so emails are our main form of communication with customers!
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! The C Man ((mobile laureate) elder advisor) 7/6/12 3:30 PM
moebean,

You can use Signature Tweaks in Labs to allow the first email you send somebody to show your signature or add your signature and delete the two dashes above your signature which is what causes the trimming.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bbbat 7/6/12 9:02 PM
"Trimmed content" is a terrible flaw, and Google must give users an option to turn it off.

My friend called me yesterday to inform me that my emails to him (consisting of instagram links) were suspicious because they were EMPTY.  He said they had NO CONTENT, so he deleted them.  He has been using gmail since the early days, and he obviously does not know what you are trying to do with your little elipsis.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! The C Man ((mobile laureate) elder advisor) 7/7/12 12:12 AM
bbbat,

This has to be guesswork but were these forwarded and you did not have any text? Whatever the reason would you please start a new question so this can be followed up?
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bbbat 7/7/12 8:45 AM
Reply to C Man:

The first three emails were not forwarded.  Two contained only links to pages displaying photos.  The third also contained three words of text next to a link.  He deleted all three emails, fearing malware infection.

Then while on the phone, I forwarded him one of the above emails.  He said, "It's empty; it says 'deleted content.'"  He apparently interpreted your word "trimmed" to mean deleted.  He said, "I'm clicking on 'Show deleted content,' but nothing's happening."

Please advise how my issue seems different from the original question on 11/16/11.  What new title would you give to my issue/question?

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! The C Man ((mobile laureate) elder advisor) 7/7/12 3:45 PM
Was it a different language? In your copy of the sent mail what does it display?
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bbbat 7/7/12 5:03 PM
Reply to C Man:  No different language, just English.  I sent all of the emails from Hotmail/WindowsLiveMail, and they all look perfect in my Sent folder, as usual.  100% of my content visible.

When I use Hotmail to forward an email to my own Gmail account, I see the EMPTY result with the tiny ellipsis.  By the way, I don't blame my friend for interpreting "trimmed" to mean deleted (if he did).  When someone trims your hair, the missing hair stays missing.

Thank God Hotmail has no flaw like this.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! The C Man ((mobile laureate) elder advisor) 7/7/12 5:27 PM
bbbat,

You are blaming Gmail for what Hotmail/Windows Live Mail may not have sent. Have you checked this against a Yahoo or other account or even another Hotmail account. Have you tried sending direct from Gmail? Are you even using a Gmail account.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bbbat 7/7/12 8:33 PM
Reply to C Man: Thought it was clear from my example (last post) that Hotmail did successfully forward the content to my Gmail account, before Gmail hid 100% of it behind the tiny ellipsis.  Then I was able to navigate the ellipsis and see it, unlike my friend.

One more time:  When Gmail receives content from ANY email program and hides it, the user experiences inconvenience at best and zero communication (plus suspicion) at worst.  See the posts on this page.

My friend -- and everyone else -- needs an option to TURN IT OFF.

It's already very clear that Gmail fails to display hidden/"trimmed" content sent by Gmail (without navigating the ellipsis).

[Sorry, no interest in exploring Yahoo at this time.  Since you asked, when I tried sending email from my Gmail to my Gmail, the content (a link) appeared unhidden (hooray?).]

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! The C Man ((mobile laureate) elder advisor) 7/8/12 2:39 AM
bbbat,

I'm sorry if you think I am going around in circles or worse still forcing you to but unless you sent it from one Gmail account to another Gmail account it would not be a proven test as if you send it to your own Google will know and duplicate the original.

I am wondering if Gmail is believing falsely that the forwarded portion is part of a signature and thus hiding it and if so would using Signature Tweaks stop the problem.

bbbat,

Your Jan 5th does not work for me as we are in different time zones.

I rarely forward anything in the way described. I will copy and paste from the received mail and send in this way. For me it has always been a discourtesy to carry forward with previous email contained in what I am sending as this after three or four posts in each direction creates an email several screens long just repeating the same things again and again when you go beyond the trimmed area. It is the same as what is in the conversation view and if I am unsure of what is there I can use the Expand All button.

I know my way creates extra work but I consider it better mannered.

I would like to add my voice to the literally HUNDREDS of posters in this forum who are saying THIS IS A BAD IDEA. Dear Google--please stop this madness! I compose what I think are very important emails, and I want to see them exactly as the end recipient sees them--no clipping, no nothing!

Imagine if I sent an email to opposing counsel with an entire thread attached that I didn't know was there because of a "..."! Now imagine it's a high-profile, multi-million dollar lawsuit!

Change this feature! At least let us turn it off!

Thank you!

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! The C Man ((mobile laureate) elder advisor) 7/24/12 12:43 PM
Piedra,

Evidently you have never attempted to reply because what will be trimmed will be shown to you in the reply and you can delete it by using Ctrl and a at the same time or highlighting it and then typing the first letter of the new response. Clipping (unless your post is over long) never happens and should it be an over long then the receiver can use show in full.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Miss.Sassafras 7/24/12 7:11 PM
You forget that I am the receiver!  Whether I click on "reply" or "click here to view entire message" is much the same thing--taking me away from my original INCOMING email.  When I receive a NEW, incoming email I want to be able to read the ENTIRE email as I was able to just a few days ago!!!  I like Gmail well enough until I was forced over to this new format.  And now this new "feature" mail has forced on me.

Miss.Sassafras,

Is your first name Piedra? Her comment was about sending and the fact that something she did not want could be hidden while she was sending and would then appear in it at the receiving end.

Message clipping is not the same as trimming. Read my reply to Piedra where I did explain about over long emails.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Miss.Sassafras 7/24/12 11:48 PM
No, I am not Piedra.   It is not emails I am sending, but emails I am receiving.  Particularly my daily email from gocomics.com with my daily toons.  Just a few days ago, they started arriving clipped two-thirds of my toons off the incoming email.  I have been a subscriber to gocomics.com for over five years, and never had any problems with gmail clipping them until just recently.  I find it annoy to have to either reply or click on the link to receive my whole email!!!

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Interface Analyst 7/29/12 2:07 AM
Yes, this is the point.

What we dont need is a Diff algorithm deciding which bits of my new email I really want my colleagues to see when I send them something. What if I Want to tell them the same thing Twice? I have to actually understand what a Diff algorithm Does and alter the content of my email accordingly.

The difference with "hide quoted text" was that it hi the contents that was appending from previous emails. That is not the same algorithm at all...

I get empty emails with just an elipsis because someone has just forwarded me an email without adding anything. thats just plane wrong.

Also, "having a setting to disable this" is not sufficient as my entire company runs on google apps, and I cant ask everyone to log into settings and change "ellipsis" nonsense. It would take weeks, and have to be part of the setup of all new employees.

Please can we have someone respond to this issue one strategic basis?

The key word there is "typically".

If we don't want to include the quoted text in the reply, we're perfectly capable of deleting it ourselves, thank you very much. Instead, you implement a "feature" that, as often as not, hides part of the email we're trying to send?!?

This is absurd, not to mention unacceptable.

I agree with micky sahani. I use my android to check job postings & don't have the option to extend trimmed messages meaning I've had to wait to get home to my laptop obviating the benefit of mobile device, but......
The problem has recently been made worse by now not giving me the "..." option at bottom of of my emails so I cannot extend emails.

Very, very disappointing

Yes, I agree.  I received an email today that the sender (another Gmail user) said he wanted to remove, but because of the stupid trimmed/hidden content thing he missed seeing it and hence didn't cut it.  So, I saw the whole thing, which he didn't want me to.

Turning conversation view off will also remove the trimmed content.  However, with conversation view on, clicking on the elipses (...) will show you exactly what's in the reply (https://docs.google.com/document/edit?id=1HK_kJMdmveT7vqYIa2gPwM6F6t9vSl__6MpWD_wDRKI).  As a note, regardless of whether conversation view is on or off, a reply will include the exact same content.

I often use previous emails as 'drafts' for new ones, and any content which I haven't changed ends up trimmed!! Are my recipients getting the impression that I am sending out a 'standard reply' ??  That is seriously a big problem!!
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! DancesWithLife 11/21/12 10:41 AM
peubert's solution works perfectly every time - NOTHING in your email will be trimmed or hidden from the recipient.

1. Create your Signature and save it.
2. Open a new email (click the compose button). You will see your signature in this new email.
3. Remove the 2 hyphens " -- " that are on the line above your signature (place your cursor at the end of the second hyphen and push the Backspace Button on your keyboard twice).
4. Write and Send your email.
Your Recipient(s) will see the complete content of your message - body and signature!
5. Test it by sending an email to one of your other email accounts.

So, the solution is to Remove the 2 hyphens on the line above your signature, in every email message you compose, before sending it.

Thanks for the fix peubert!

The gang at Gmail are surely busy with other important things that keep us happy and in "free email". I'm guessing the hyphens are there for a reason and if they can prevent the Trimming of information (without an effect somewhere else) they will/would. Thanks Gmail!

So I'll chime in and try to be as clear as I can be. There are 2 things discussed in this thread (one of which is not a bug, but a feature):

1) There is a FEATURE where GMail doesn't display all the the prior e-mail when replying or forwarding.  This is a display space saving feature and can be dealt with easily by clicking.

2) There is a BUG where GMail cuts the e-mail down to a tiny portion when replying or forwarding.  This removes information, there is no way to 'expand' the content, and the detail is lost from the email that is being sent.  This forces the user to manually copy the information from the prior e-mail and paste it into the forward or reply.

The BUG is what the initial concern was and has been confused with the FEATURE.

Is there any info on this BUG and how to resolve it?  I am seeing this using GMail in Chrome (which puts it all in Google's hands).

This is what it should be doing! But its doing more than that!!!
Earlier gmail was trimming only the duplicating part but these days it trims all OUTGOING mail of mine (in conversation view) ,
yes you can view what I wrote by clicking "View Entire message" but not only its is very time consuming but also very irritating.
Further the VIEW ENTIRE MESSAGE option does not comes when you are view that mail on Android phone - thereby in no way you will not what you had written!!!

I use Firefox, and clearing cache and cookies seems to have completely cleared the issue.

My messages were truncated with not option to expand.... literally dropped the text of all responses below except for some very small random clipping.  Now is working like it used to.

Clear your cache and cookies kids!  It would be nice if gmail wasn't susceptible to this type of quirk.

This happens with me as well, using the Gmail app on a HTC phone running android 4.1.1.
There is a group email that comes out each week, with the locations on where to meet up at the bottom of the email. Using the gmail app you cannot touch the three dots at the bottom to expand the message to find where we have to meet.
I'm extremely frustrated with this. The only way to view the information is logon a PC, click on the dots (which don't work on the gmail app on the phone) and read the information. To add to the frustration I recently changed from an iphone to android, because of the maps issue, and google navigation.

I've also seen the problem referred to as "clipping content".  Typically quoted text from a previous message, but the service is faulty, and I often get whole emails clipped, let alone a few lines or a signature.  Everyone I message needs to see the ENTIRE message.  Clicking on the (...) is not a helpful option.  No one knows to do this, and few people do.

The link supplied to suggest new features and vote for the most common suggestions is not helpful in anyway.

Please make this an issue that Google addresses ASAP.  It is causing critical miscommunications between clients and employees and costing me money.

I will have to direct my entire 150 employee office to stop using Google+ and Gmail as of next week if this problem is not addressed.

Best,

Chris

Be sure to post what your replacement is as even if Google makes changes, I doubt they will be on your time-table.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! TWnRW 3/2/13 6:01 AM
One way that may help is to go under Settings (in the "gear" icon list in upper right) and under General tab, choose Conversation View Off about 1/3 way down the page.  This will treat each email as a separate thing as in days of old, instead of stringing related ones together.

Hey, this issue still is not resolved.  My emails that I send, it randomly trims them, sometimes half way through.  People reply to me as if they didn't read half the email BECAUSE it's hidden!  Granted, they didn't know to expand the email, but no everyone looks for that stupid icon.  Please resolve this or just take out the feature?

Further question on this problem. When using the Gmail app on an android phone. Using a HTC OneXL, with Android 4.1.1, it trims the message, with the three dots visible. However, you CANNOT select the dots, and the message remains trimmed, with the only way to access the email is read it on a PC.
Does anyone know a way around this?

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! slack---line 4/14/13 1:48 AM
This is a disadvantage for anyone who replies in-line rather than always top-posting.

I personally prefer to reply in-line so that my responses have context.  This doesn't happen with top-posting (or bottom posting) and forces the reader to go back to previous emails to read the question that is being answered.

Completely agree with others that there should be an option to "Never hide trimmed text".

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! John Mellesmoen 5/11/13 11:00 AM
The content that is getting clipped is often content the user has never seen before.  The content that gets clipped for me is content that is forwarded to me by someone else.  ie. Person A gets a message from someone else, they forward it to me, gmail interprets it as viewed content even though I've never seen it before.

On my phone, there is no content visible and no option to view the clipped content. This is very frustrating and has lead to more than one phone call asking where the content is and the other person saying they forwarded the message.

On a desktop browser the ability to see the clipped content is available.  This is what is at the bottom of the email..
"[Message clipped]  View entire message"
By clicking on view entire message, the content is revealed.

This is a gmail problem but its lack of consistency makes me think its being triggered in the way some email clients label the data within a message giving it a blanket, "its been viewed before label", without any data that says who viewed it.

Taylor Banaszak: No, it does not resolve the problem. It only removes the annoyance in my email account, but if my client happens to use Gmail, then my name and signature are still clipped when I write to him... So, unless I want to beg all my correspondents to change their view to "conversation view off", then Google must come up with some mechanism that doesn't allow my emails to be trimmed, whether the receiver wants it or not.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Alejandra Mercado 5/16/13 12:39 PM
If gmail were only used by students, it might make sense that gmail overrides the user's preference in favor of some efficiency. But there are companies which use gmail, and my business depends on every single one of my signatures to show up when I contact a client, whether the client wants it or not. It's like ads... nobody wants them, but we all understand that they are necessary to keep the wheels turning.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! julie Aouizerate 6/6/13 11:28 AM
That's absolutely untrue... The receiver of the email does not see the full message but just the untrimmed part. Lots of "receivers" don't click the "..." and never see the rest of it. I tried transferring an email. In order to avoid the trimming of the forwarded message, I made some edits to it and then switched it back. Sent it. The forwarded content was still trimmed for the recipient. For Google, it's incredible to me that this hasn't been corrected or that users don't have the ability to turn that "feature" (i'm being nice) off. Grrr...

It is just the "too smart feature".

It hides some important message just because the message looks the same as the previous message.

Who needs such kind of "too smart".

Stop it immediately or at least let's choose if or if not we need the feature!!

What is the difficult for google to fix the "too smart feature" ??

i agree that this is a ridiculous feature...
for example, if i forward a message (which i do quite often)but insert text with a signature after it, it trims THE ENTIRE FORWARDED MESSAGE.........

This trimming of content 'feature' is madness and its obvious from the number of complaints that, once again , Google is doing something that nobody wants and that makes no sense whatsoever- ( well maybe from Googles storage needs it does make sense but defintitely not for the user). Our business mail  has been switched from Outlook to Google, worst mistake ever and if these sort of features keep being added without any possibility for the user to de-activate them at a 'Settings' level then not only will I will definitely be pushing my boss to switch back to Outlook, but I will also be advising any others thinking of switching to Google not to

well maybe from Googles storage needs it does make sense but defintitely not for the user

The trimming is VISUAL only.  The data is still there so it doesn't save any storage space.

I will definitely be pushing my boss to switch back to Outlook

Outlook is an e-mail client, not an e-mail provider.  If you like Outlook, then configure POP or IMAP and use it with Gmail (instead of the Gmail web-interface).  Lots of people use Gmail as their e-mail server, but use the e-mail client of their choice to do all the reading/writing.  You don't need to "push your boss", you can go back to Outlook today.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Matt Pzero 7/12/13 9:43 AM
This trimmed content has literally been a GMail issue for years now, as I have searched many of the threads for a solution (there isn't one). It appears that Google believes it is smarter than its users and knows what is best for them and that is WRONG.

As others have said, my signatures and any copied text can and will cause text to be cut off and most recipients don't know to click the dots to view the rest and THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE TO! This should be an option plain and simple.

Google thinks it is adding simplicity and "readability" when in reality they add more and more clicks in order to actually use their web email client. Oh, a majority of our users rarely use CC, so we'll just make you click EVERY SINGLE TIME you want to add one in the new compose. How about the rest of us who use a CC almost every time we email, like I don't know, in a work environment?

I should not have to click five different things each time I compose or reply to an email to actually fully view the email and use the COMMON email features. Google has billions of dollars at their disposal, but they can't pay their developers to add a relatively simple OPTION for users if they want their content trimmed. I wish they would listen like they used to...

I have been using GMail since the beta stages and I'm sad to say that I will begin looking for Google Products alternatives for my storage, documents and email.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Laura Micek 7/24/13 8:06 AM
I am annoyed by this too. It hides my signature for my company emails. If someone is using gmail and doesn't know to click the expandable content button they won't know how to contact me.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Lord Childe 8/1/13 5:23 PM
This thread was started nearly 2 years ago, so Google obviously don't give a damn about it.

When I browse through Sent Mail I always come across messages that are devoid of my salutations or signing off simply because it's hidden. If the recipient of mail can't be bothered with 'show trimmed content' then it just looks like rudeness.

Very rude.

This feature is really annoying me also. I just want to confirm that the message isn't being sent like that, as in the person who receives my initial email, will be able to read the email in its entirety without having to click on 3 dots to read my full email, just worried.

Just ported Trimless to Firefox, in case anyone was interested.

For Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/trimless-for-google-mail/niepjjjfafhadmfdminbckmciijcaagc
For Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/trimless-for-google-mail/

Expands trimmed parts, removes "Show trimmed content" buttons, sets trimmed text's color to light gray and indents it to the right. You can switch it on and off by simply clicking the scissors icon in the address bar.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! AlexSM 8/24/13 8:27 PM
It's also complicated for seniors and less savvy users.

Seniors take longer time to learn and retain UI information. When there is a change like this new compose window and the trimming behavior (or feature) that hides information, things get really complicated for those users and the lack of options to disable certain behaviors leave the family and company technical supports without alternatives to help them using the tool they took so long to master the basics (let alone the advanced features).

I wish Gmail developers would include seniors in their usability tests to see how hard for them is to use (what used to be) a simple tool like e-mail.

I absolutely hate this feature and I would love for there to be a way to turn it off.  I didn't see this mentioned, though I think it goes without saying: I shouldn't need to employ third party software for a simple toggle of a feature that should be included in the view settings.  Just add a button to turn it off and we're good.  It's that simple.

I agree. It is rubbish, and becoming more rubbish each update. The latest web updates is giving less viewable mail, and in the android version, the message space is now miniscule after the update yesterday. The "view entire message" on the web page is garbage - it spawns another tab. And in Android, it doesn't even have the decency to have that option. If the email itself doesn't have a link to a web version, you are stuffed.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! teancum144 11/12/13 10:00 AM
The best solution I've found is the following:
1) Click on the gear icon
2) Click settings
3) Go to the "General" tab
4) Scroll down to "Signature"
5) Add a signature such as your first name
6) Below the signature box, check the box "Insert this signature before quoted text in replies and remove the '--' line that precedes it."
7) Click "Save Changes" at the bottom of the screen.
This only works for emails you send. When you compose an email, your signature will be hidden behind the "--", but when you send your message, the "--" is removed and your sent messages are never trimmed when viewed by the recipient and when viewed from your sent items. I've tested this and it works 100% of the time.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! user going crazy 11/15/13 11:08 AM
Please explain to me the logic of hiding an ENTIRE e-mail when one forwards a given message.
1) I write a 10 paragraph email explaining how to use an attachment.
2) I forward the email and attachment to another person.
3) The second person sees three dots and an attachment. The second person may or may not have enough sense to click on the dots to read the very important information that I NEED them to read.
Since this a forwarded message, it does not make sense to hide it. It's not a reply. It's a forward. It means "Hey, I think you should read this."
Except, there's nothing to read, at first look.
I can't have to write a little note saying "read on" every time I forward something, and I can't depend on the recipient's intelligence every time either.
The only logical solution is to include a simple choice in the settings where I can disable automatic trimming, ESPECIALLY when I am FORWARDING something, and not replying.

I noticed several users are indicating the trimming to content that they send or forward. What about those who are receiving the emails?
There are some instructions I've noticed to click in the "..."
I did, and nothing. No identifier tag when hovering over it either.
Also there are references towards this it's happening only to the signature areas of emails, when in my case, more than that area has been truncated.
In regards to the user who indicated the dual affect is exclusive only to Gmail users, explain how an external origin, such as an itinerary from Expedia*com results in a truncated message?
This is annoying to say the least and more so when you cannot open the message further.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! teancum144 11/26/13 1:49 PM
It may be open source, but the average sophisticated user cannot read source code. How do we know the application is not harvesting our data?
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Olegs Jeremejevs 11/26/13 2:25 PM
How do you know that any application you ever use is not harvesting your data? Pick one:

* You trust the creator (be it a person or a company). However, there never is 100% guarantee that some service provider isn't secretly dumping your information for later use or analyzing it when needed.

* You trust other fellow users to review the sources and confirm that there are no backdoors in it or some other kinds of iffy pieces of code. It doesn't necessarily mean that it'll be thoroughly investigated, but at least it shows that the developer has nothing to hide.

* You don't care.

I don't know if anyone has ever read the sources of Trimless, but what I do know is that it got successfully reviewed for Firefox's Add-on Gallery (which implies that someone in Mozilla at least checked the code for basic security holes), and that it was posted on Softpedia (not sure about their reviewing strategies).

Another note is that the extension itself might be different from the code published on Github. In that case, the "real" sources can be found here (on Windows): %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions

Hope this helps.

I guess I have some faith (maybe misplaced) that a large company like Google has more to lose (than you) if it is discovered misusing my data. You are an individual (who I don't know). I have a history using Google products, I have read about and experienced some of their security measures, and they have a reputation (good or bad) on which I can base my decision. Your extension is free, so I'm wondering what benefit you derive from offering it.

when I look at an email I only see part of a message followed by three dots. If you hover the mouse over the dots the words 'show trimmed content' appears.

Sometime it is ridiculous and trims 2-line emails down to one line. I want to be able to read the whole of a message without having to click on the dots to show it.  AND my signature is not attaching

This never used to happen - its just a recent change

This caused me serious problems.  I sent a draft to a coworker of a bid request form.  Later I sent an updated draft.  The coworker did a screen copy and paste which LEFT OUT MOST OF THE ORIGINAL DRAFT.

Bids went out, contractors bid the wrong things, job was a disaster.  Contractors saying we never told them this or that.  Arg!

Now you can blame my coworker for the screen scrape, but still, SHOW ME THE TEXT!!!!!

GOOGLE, GIVE US A CHECK BOX TO TURN THIS OFF!

If you want to turn off Trimming, try turning off "Conversation View" in settings. While not an ideal solution, it may be the simple workaround and a "toggle" option that some people are looking for...certainly works for me in Chrome when trimming occurs in conversation view.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! tasss 2/12/14 11:50 AM
This is exactly the correct description.  The last line of my reply to an email is included with the previous email after the dots.  So I'm having the same problem that the person receiving my reply doesn't see my name unless they click to see the original email.  It's definitely a bug that just started happening.  Even if I add some carriage returns after my name, it still puts the last text line of my new email in with the old email.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Wingerr 2/13/14 7:18 PM
I've only looked at the first few pages and this last one of this issue, looking for an option to turn off trimming, or at least a keyboard shortcut to expand the message instead of having to continually go back to the mouse to click on the dots, but didn't see anything so far other than the complaints about the feature.

I have to assume Google implemented this as a way to cut down on their bandwidth, because the expansion initiates a further download of the trimmed information that was otherwise not done.  Maybe the idea was to speed things up by essentially showing only headers, and having the users download the actual messages only as necessary.

I've got some conversations with 60 messages in them that differ only from some jpg attachments and while the keyboard shortcuts normally are nice in being able to go through them rapidly without having to mouse around all the time, it gets entirely circumvented with the trimming.  Oh well.  3 or 4 years so far, doesn't look like there'll be any resolution.

I'll check into that app to see if it might address Gmail's quirky setup.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Wingerr 2/13/14 7:55 PM
Well, tried out the Trimless app by Olegs and it suits my purposes well.  It may give the appearance of making the mail come up slower but that's simply because it's downloading everything at once instead of one by one as Google would have you do.
If those in charge of Gmail keyboard shortcuts were able to figure out how to implement one for toggling the trimmed content it would have been another option, but the Trimless does the trick.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! white45 2/13/14 8:14 PM
Have you tried turning off "Conversation View" in Gmail settings? With Conversation View off, you won't get "collapsed" emails and the three dots.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Wingerr 2/13/14 10:11 PM
While that works somewhat, the drawback with that is that I'd need to apply a label view to exclude other emails in order to look only at the ones from the same group that I'm going through.  With conversation view, they're grouped automatically, which is nice.
Even if I have them all together in label view, each one still needs to be opened individually to download the attachments, which takes more time.  With the Trimless app, they can effectively be batch downloaded, and I can go off onto something else while it's downloading instead of having to step through them.

I think even if a keyboard shortcut to de-trim each message was possible, the batch handling works better, because once they're all downloaded, they can all be reviewed very quickly with the 'n' and 'p' shortcuts.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Olegs Jeremejevs 2/13/14 11:02 PM
All _trimmed_ content (not _clipped_) is downloaded at the same time as the messages, it's just hidden. Unfortunately, the performance issue is 100% Trimless's fault, but I found a way to resolve it, and the fix will become effective with the release of 2.0 (after I implement some other features; might release it earlier, in 1.9.1 or something).

About the keyboard shortcuts - could you, please, elaborate on that? What bindings would you want and what would you expect them to do? By the way, are you aware, that you can toggle Trimless by clicking the scissors icon in the URL bar?

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Wingerr 2/14/14 7:32 PM
Whatever the hit is on the performance, I've got no problems with it, as it's working out well for me.  I notice that sometimes a few of the attachments don't appear to load up unless I perform a reload of the page, and then the few stragglers come in.  Could just be coincidence from just allowing more time though, I haven't really tried letting it sit longer to see if they eventually load up.

As far as the shortcuts, I'd like it if hitting a 'B' while in conversation view would toggle the Show Trimmed Content option (doesn't look like B's being used for anything right now, and it's conveniently next to the 'N' button that I use to advance to the next message while in conversation view.  Hit B, and it shows the trimmed content on the selected message; hit B again, and it hides it.  That'd be useful for me because it would allow me to work without continually working the mouse to expand the messages.  If I could work entirely without a mouse I would-

THIS INSANITY IS DRIVING ME NUTS

Why would I want my mail carrier to selectively NOT display ALL the original content?  When someone sends me a message I NEED THE WHOLE MESSAGE without having to 'unlock' it bit my bit.  There NEEDS to be an option "DO NOT CLIP MESSAGES"

I don't mind it hiding copypasta quotes from previous messages but WE NEED FULL CONTENT THE FIRST TIME AROUND

Google's services used to be simple and intuitive but they are gradually becoming ungainly with all the new 'improvements,'-  Bloated with useless features that hurt work flow.

Gmail should have an option in the Settings not to trimm content.
Just like it should have an option to disable shortcuts. There are thousands users out there asking for those options for years!

This is the kind of BS that makes Google look more and more like Microsoft - not listenning to the customers. :(

I am a pretty successful indie developer and if I decide to change Gmail for something else, so will my 27 employees (as we would stop using Google Docs as well).
Then our use of Android as the primary platform will change as well. Already we prefer to work with Amazon's SDK and not Google's.
Food for thought...

Make sure you let Google know you thoughts on that.

Hello everyone,
I experimented on it and I found that the trimming won't happen if the first of the two lines ends with a comma.

These examples won't hide the last line:
1:
Regards,
William

2:
Regards,

William

These will definitely hide the last line:
1:
Regards.
William

2:
Regards
William

3:

This works for me:
  1. From within Gmail, click on the gear icon and select "Settings".
  2. In the "General" tab, scroll down to the "Signature" section.
  3. Select the radio button near the upper-left corner of the signature box (This deselects the "No Signature" option).
  4. Leave the signature box blank.
  5. Check the box that says, "Insert this signature before quoted text in replies and remove the "--" line that precedes it."
  6. Scroll down to the bottom and select "Save Changes".
Now, when you compose messages, you must manually enter your signature. This prevents your outgoing messages from being trimmed.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! yetser 5/16/14 6:20 AM
Something else that might work:

I created a 2-line sig in very light gray (so it's barely visible).  First line is blank.  Second line is this exactly:

[stub line to bypass Gmail trimming bug]

I also checked the "insert this signature before quoted text [...]" option.

Now regardless of whether I author or forward a message, the truncation is gone.

This was a long thread and I don't know if it will work for anyone at all, but maybe it will for a few.  Hope it helps someone......

Best regards,

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! teancum144 6/6/14 2:44 PM
This is so frustrating!
  1. Regularly I sent out an email communications to a large group who are members of an organization I volunteer with.
  2. In the email, I specified to RSVP to a specific person (and provided their email address).
  3. Because many people typically reply directly to me, I set up a canned response to remind them to reply to the person designated in the email.
  4. The canned response works perfectly for the first person.
  5. For each subsequent person, the entire canned response is trimmed -- in other words, no message at all is shown.
  6. I have to try to remember to modify the message near the end for each subsequent reply (defeats the purpose of canned responses).
Very frustrating!! Does Google see these messages?
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! teancum144 6/24/14 8:08 AM
I replied to one person in a group email, but didn't send it, and saved it as a draft. I copied the same text to reply to another person in the group. Because of the existing draft with identical text, the entire body of the 2nd message was trimmed. This is so frustrating!

Trimmed in what way? Was it hidden for THEM or just for you?
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Trimming needs to GO 6/27/14 10:32 PM
I sent similar emails to different groups of people with minor modifications. Only the first group got the email as a completely NEW E-MAIL.

This trimming can easily make people think, oh the content here was sent to me BEFORE, I have read this. While it is indeed new.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! teancum144 7/22/14 9:46 AM
The Chrome extension "Trimless for Google Mail" only works for emails received and not emails sent, correct?
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Olegs Jeremejevs 7/22/14 12:43 PM
Yes, that is correct. Everything Trimless does is visible only to you, and there's no [easy] way to overcome this.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! James Elmore 7/31/14 9:23 AM
Also, I want to be clear about what is being trimmed. I ran 4 questions by my employer that I would be suggesting to a client. She made adjustments to question number two. I cut and pasted those questions in an email to our client, made the corrections and sent it. Here is an "example" of what took place, I sent this:

Dear Client,

You will be arriving tomorrow?

There will be four of you?

You would like lunch?

You have found additional funding?

Thank you

AND THIS IS WHAT MY EMAIL ENDED UP LOOKING LIKE:

Dear Client,

You will be arriving tomorrow?

There will be four of you?
...

SO AS YOU SEE, DISENGAGING THIS FEATURE IS A PRIORITY.

Fuzzy, sorry for the delayed reply, I'll answer your question in full context as follows:

Me: I replied to one person in a group email, but didn't send it, and saved it as a draft. I copied the same text to reply to another person in the group. Because of the existing draft with identical text, the entire body of the 2nd message was trimmed. This is so frustrating!

Fuzzy: Trimmed in what way? Was it hidden for THEM or just for you?

Me: Hidden for them (determined by checking my sent items folder).

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! teancum144 9/17/14 9:26 AM
Fuzzy, I was skeptical, but you are correct. I did a test where I emailed one person some text and then forwarded that email to another person, but first deleted the header so it appeared like I was writing a new email (but with the exact same text). In my sent items, the entire body of the 2nd message was trimmed. However, when I checked the recipient's inbox, nothing was trimmed. I also tried a similar test using "Reply" instead of "Forward", with the same results. However, when I send the email to the same person twice with the exact same text, it trims the entire message. This is an interesting discovery supports the idea that, in some cases, gmail is smart enough to trim only on the sender's end, but not on the receivers end. Still, I wish there was a way to configure this. Also, I wish that what is displayed in your sent items mirrors exactly what the recipient receives. Otherwise, how do you really know what Gmail is sending (unless you test all the time which isn't practical).

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! AronNL 9/24/14 3:47 AM
Same here, for about a week Gmail has been trimming my messages wrong. I did some testing with mailing and responding to myself, and it seems that if I change the way I usually end my mail with just one letter, the message isn't trimmed.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Matt Swann Creative 9/29/14 8:56 AM
This Problem is infuriating. I work with old school clients that simply do not know about the ellipsis or what it does. So if any of them are using Gmail it can be a problem if an important email chain of forwards or replies is hidden.

After checking the box: "Insert this signature before quoted text in replies and remove the "--" line that precedes it." in settings, I inserted a couple of line breaks, then a line of dashes and an extra line of text under my signature in small bold red text so it will always appear but look separate from my signature. Like this:

————————————————————————————————————————————————
GMAIL USERS: To see the complete email history, all past forwards or replies in the chain, click on the grey ellipsis or 3 dots below to expand. THANKS

I know this is not ideal. But what other option do we have? It helps to avoid confusing situations with my clients and goes some way to explaining what the ellipsis does (basically doing google's job for them).

Rather than get rid of the trimming ellipses, maybe google could offer the option to replace the ellipsis with a bold strongly worded label such as: CLICK HERE TO EXPAND THE COMPLETE PAST EMAIL like they used to have I think ....
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Hayley Stansell 9/30/14 8:46 AM
I've been investigating this issue as well using all of the typical suggestions I could find on the internet, and it really seems like the autoformatting comes from gmail "recognizing" text that matches text in prior emails in a given thread. Which is really unfortunate when you are trying to be formal and copy out lengthy addresses and signatures instead of typing them over and over. I found that even if I half-copy, half type a section of text - it will still default to showing up purple...even if I can get it to not be hidden as quoted text. Copying to plain text and back doesn't work, Tx/remove formatting doesn't work. This problem is really unsolvable-seeming when it comes to working in message threads. Send a separate message to the same person with the exact same text? - No problem. But, it would be *amazing* to be able to do that within a thread. Why? Because if you are referencing an earlier email you sent - boom, there it is in the same thread. I am pretty frustrated by this issue and haven't found anything that consistently works. Less could be so much more, here.

On the notion that what you see isn't what your receivers see.... how is that a good idea? If you want to have professionalism in your emails, you should be able to know in advance how your email will appear to others. You can generally do this by sending drafts to yourself, but again - heaven forbid you draft an email to put back into a thread. No amount of "removing formatting" will stop gmail from putting it as quoted text if it is the same as prior text in the thread. So the only way to check is to go waltz over to another account you sent it too to see how the formatting worked out? That is really not a good solution.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Hayley Stansell 9/30/14 8:49 AM
Exactly. I have sent out one too many emails to potential *employers* that look idiotic thanks to quoted text that only appears as such after you send a message, cannot be dealt with...etc. Why this is such an insane hassle is beyond me.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Lark Mandy 10/7/14 6:39 PM
Well I just had to log into my office 365 because the mail that was being forwarded from there was getting "trimmed" and it was cutting out the NEW messages in the emails as well and asking me to open it in a new window if I wanted to see the whole email.... it was trimming  brand new emails...
So I had to jump to office 365....
Which is cool and all....
But when Microsofts email starts becoming better then Google email it's time to get the ball rolling again.

Google will never take the initiative to fix this problem.
A wiser feller than myself once said:
'Sometimes you eat the bear.
And sometimes... the bear... well...
He eats you'.

This small (and pitiful) band of rebels we've managed to garner throughout this thread are no match for the likes of a multinational cyber wonder.
What I have learned from traversing the rabbit hole is similar to what many people have parroted...

The best way to circumnavigate this colossal cluster fuck is to sign off every email (at the 'bottom' ((read: the final characters))) using the 'option' key on a Mac ('alt' on a PC) plus whichever letter (or number) (or letters & numbers sans 'option/alt') you so desire.

e.g. - any combination of:

¡™£¢∞§¶•ªº–≠œ∑´®†¥¨ˆøπ“‘«åß∂ƒ©˙∆˚¬…æΩ≈ç√∫˜µ≤≥÷

Clearly, the permutations are endless...
I have had great success with this method. Not only does nobody even register a few random characters at the bottom of a correspondence, I also get the extra added bonus of having to be a little bit creative on the fly.

So, in closing...
Fuck You Google.
(And an extra fuck y'all to the NSA ;)

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! teancum144 10/28/14 8:47 AM
Fuzzy, it may be working as designed, but the design is flawed. If Gmail trimmed only previously read messages, the design would be good. However, when Gmail often trims part of the (or the entire) new message; that is poor design. I'm not sure why you provided the "Feature Suggestions Page - Gmail Help" link because I do not see any suggestable features relating to message trimming.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Fuzzy 10/28/14 9:46 PM
There should be a link to suggest new features. I would suggest a feature to allow users to turn off trimming.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Raven Singularity 10/29/14 8:49 AM
Fuzzy, that doesn't help the issue at all.

Most GMail users will never go into their Preferences.  Most don't even know what "trimming" is.  The problem is the receiving end, not the sending end, and we have no way to turn off other people's trimming option.  Should we seriously be required to waste our time telling everyone we contact with important e-mails to go into their GMail prefs and disable trimming?

That's ridiculous.

Nobody wants this broken trimming feature.  I've asked dozens of people if they like trimming, most didn't know what it was, the ones who did said they didn't want it.

Raven
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bkc56 10/29/14 9:59 AM
Nobody wants this broken trimming feature.

I do.  (Sorry, but I really do)

I'm sick of seeing the same long pointless signatures message after message (especially when they have 10 lines of disclaimer garbage that's usually longer than the actual message).  I'm perfectly happy to have seen it once and never see it again.

I'm also overjoyed that all the quoted content that people can't seem to be bothered to edit or remove from replies is all trimmed out so the only thing I see is the actual NEW comments they added.  A 10 line signature plus 200 lines of quoted past replies all to say "yes, I agree with that too."

If I really want to see any of that stuff, it's one click on  ...  away.

All that said, making trimming an option so users can select to trim or not trim would be a positive addition.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Wil H 10/29/14 10:17 AM
bkc56 youre missing the point - what we/they are talking about is parts of the actual REPLY getting trimmed in the trimming process.

Ive had this happen to me many times.. a few times Ive even recieved a blank email and had to CLICK on the  ...  to see the reply

And theres seemingly no rhyme not reason as to WHY it happens; no keywords that sets it off, its not jut replies from a certain person that would mean that maybe the problem is on their end..

Alll that stuff youre talking about, Im ALL for hiding that

But thats not whats being discussed here ;-)

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Raven Singularity 10/29/14 11:43 AM
bkc56, it would be reasonable to have trimming as an option that can be turned on, but the default would need to be "off".  There is no point to making it optional and having the default be enabled, as the problem is on the receiving end not the sending end.  Google obviously feels this feature is "a good thing" so they would make the default be "on".
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bkc56 10/29/14 1:17 PM
.. it would be reasonable to have trimming as an option that can be turned on, but the default would need to be "off".

I'd agree with that.

In general, I think most new things should be opt-in rather than opt-out.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! teancum144 11/11/14 8:00 AM
The problem is the trimming mechanism often gets it wrong by trimming part or all of the new message! I think everyone wants previously read messages trimmed. The signature line trimming should be optional and off by default.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Michael Kuzmin 12/8/14 8:02 AM
So here is what I figured out: if you are trying to compose an email that you don't want to be trimmed in GMail online interface you can include the entire body of the email in a table.  <table style="width:100%"><tr><td>CONTENT HERE</td></tr></table>

Unfortunately not everyone has the ability to edit their email in raw html. I do, so this works perfectly for me. But you can still use this approach if you copy and paste a 1 celled table from MS Word right into GMail compose window.

This trimming nonsense is asinine!  Ii get an email and I have to click on dots to see the whole thing?  Since when was GMail appointed to decide how much of an email I need to see?  I want to see the whole thing.  After all, the sender intended for me to read the whole thing not just the portion of it that GMail decided I need.  We need an option to disable this nonsense.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! John Mellesmoen 12/22/14 7:45 AM
None of these apps help to deal with the REAL problem.  Everyone on this forum knows that there may be additional content that they are not seeing.  We all know to go look for the trimmed message.  For example, when viewing a forwarded message from a friend on my smart phone, I would just see what he wrote and not the forwarded message.  After this happened a few times I figured it out that I had to log onto gmail using an actual browser and then I had to click on the dots to see the information that I had never seen before.......  ARGH.
THE REAL PROBLEM IS..  How do I ensure that the messages I send to people or forward to people, actually show all of the information I intended for them to see?  If they read what I wrote and didn't see the additional data that was part of a forward, this will create real problems and confusion.
TRIMMING SHOULD BE AN OPTION THAT IS CONTROLLABLE IN GMAIL SETTINGS.

This complaint about email message trimming has been going on for years, but apparently no one at Google Mail cares or even watches this discussion. Why is there no option to turn of this function.

Signature: Insert this signature before quoted text in replies and remove the "--" line that precedes it.

check this box will remove the trimmed text, and go back to the reply all ... email.

bkc56 did not understand the trimming. It was a lab feature that was moved and stopped working correctly when they moved it. I cant find the trim feature but this will turn it off.

It works for me.

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Fuzzy 1/14/15 8:55 PM
The recipient won't see those dots if they haven't seen the message before. The trimming is based on messages that the viewer has seen before.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! waste of time24 1/15/15 5:15 PM
After your sign off information (name, office, phone - whatever) skip a line down(double tap enter) and add one more line of text. Anything will work. I've done this and simply typed in "XYZ". To be a little more realistic perhaps, "Hope to see you soon". If you do this, Google doesn't interpret your sign off as such and everything goes thru and appears on the body of the email. I've done this many times and it works without fail (until Google finds out about it :)) Good luck!
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Andrew Dew 2/9/15 8:02 AM
This is just insane and the problem is real! I read through just about this whole thread going back to 2011. The same problems are occurring. Monique in a recent post really highlights one the main issues. When are you writing causal emails in a big group and you want to copy and paste plans for example, and make small changes or additions, if any of the ladder of the message after the change is considered "duplicate", it will be trimmed.

For example, I am copying and pasting a list of people from previous emails into a reply-all email thread of 14 emails. As I hear back from individuals, I add or subtract their name, and any duplicate message after the change gets trimmed. Its bloody hell. I really only see this problem for casual emails like this and normally avoid it in a more professional style email.

Screw this!

Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! teancum144 2/21/15 5:11 PM
Fuzzy,

Interesting. I just tested this and you are correct. Even if the entire repeated message is trimmed for me, if the recipient has never seen the message before, it is not trimmed for her. It's nice to know that trimming is intelligent on that level. However, unless you test that, you don't know for sure and may not have confidence in the trimming feature. Nevertheless, I'm pleased to discover this. Thank you.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Fuzzy 2/21/15 8:20 PM
Sure, happy to help. I just want people to know that the trimming is based only on the recipient's mail, not on the sender.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! TrimmedOutofaJob 3/13/15 4:56 PM
I'll add to this.  I had an important email reply that I needed to send to an employer that had contacted me about setting up a time to interview. I wanted to make sure my reply sounded appropriate so I forwarded the email and my proposed response to my wife, she replied back "looks good" so I copied the text and pasted into a reply just to the employer...flash forward a couple days and I hadn't heard anything back about the email I sent.  I checked my sent folder and my content was trimmed since it appeared earlier in the thread (to my wife, but not in any way accessible to the employer).  That led to me just now sending another email to the employer (the first one appears completely blank unless you click on the dots) with the same information and looking technologically incompetent (yeah its a tech-related job).  Thanks google, you may have foiled my one good job prospect!!
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! bkc56 3/13/15 6:38 PM
(the first one appears completely blank unless you click on the dots)

Only if:

1.  The employer was also using Gmail.
2.  The employer had previously received that information from you such that it would make sense to trim it.

Remember, what YOU see in Sent Mail is NOT typically what THEY see in their Inbox.

Which means if they did not meet conditions 1 and 2, they you really did send two "duplicate" copies of the information.

Gmail is also trimming my husband's signature. He works in sales so displaying the contact phone number, email address, etc., is important and relevant information rather than repeated information. This occurs in the first email in a thread, not just in replies.

Is there a work around?
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Fuzzy 3/24/15 5:21 PM
It will show up that way for HIM, but not for the recipients on the first message.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Angelina Rigsby 3/24/15 10:21 PM
No, I mean it's showing up that way for me when I receive the email.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Kathyatwork 3/25/15 7:56 AM
This may not be a solution for all (and I am sure this answer will annoy many), but for now UNTIL GOOGLE IMPLEMENTS OPTIONS FOR US IN SETTINGS, you may want to type a simple statement at the end of some emails to certain recipients to alert them which says "If dots below, click to view.", or something like that.

BUT REALLY, IT IS LOGICAL FOR GOOGLE TO SET UP OPTIONS FOR USERS. THIS MAKES FOR GOOD P.R.

Google should make it their business also to read these postings on forums about them and help/answer their customers this way, too. We are customers after all. Without customers, there is no business or product.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Fuzzy 3/25/15 2:13 PM
And you have never received a message from your husband with that same signature before?
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Angelina Rigsby 3/25/15 2:31 PM
I have, but in a separate thread. The signature was hidden in the very first email with that signature, showed in a subsequent email where he wrote the body of the email below the signature, and then was hidden in the ones following - except for one where he didn't know what he did to make it show up.

It doesn't really sound like there's a solution for this, which is very unfortunate, because again, he wants his contact information to show up to his customers whether it's the initial contact or after a 6 month follow up - where there would be a new thread, but if they've archived their initial correspondence it'll be hidden.

I understand the value of the feature in condensing lengthy replies that don't need to be reread, but I hope there can eventually be some kind of improvement that would allow signatures to get a pass on the trimming.

I have opposite problem - when I print email chain all messages are repeated numerous number of time. How I can disable it and show all messages in the chain in reverse chronological order (the newest message first) without messages being repeated each time the reply or forward was executed? Anyone knows how to do it? I looked though the settings and I could not find anything that was doing that.

Not sure if anyone is still looking for an answer for this. I am using Firefox, and found this add-on for this issue. Its called "

Trimless for Google Mail". Does Gmail is have this option already. Let me know if it does.

yes, I'm still looking for the answer to this, and thanks for the tip, I'll try with the Firefox add-on.
BTW, it's unbelievable, that this topis started in 2011 , and it's still not available as a choice in "Settings".

RSRSCC, This feature is not available natively in Gmail. However, Trimless is also available as an extension for Chrome.

Gmail also "trims" content that I have pasted from another source. So if I use Google Docs to create text and then paste it into Gmail, it gets trimmed. This is super-annoying. We need to have a way to make sure the email doesn't get trimmed when we send it. Very important!!! I understand trimming previous threads, but not the live body of a new email. EeeeeeeK!!!! Help!!!!!
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Ellen Lupton 4/29/15 7:30 AM
To all the annoyed people out there, see if this works:

1. Initiate a reply (press R, or Shift+R for pop-out reply)
2. Press the down arrow (highlights the ellipses that will expand the text)
3. Press Enter (expands the text)
4. Type your reply as normal

Here is my suggestion. How about everyone who despises this feature, like myself, send some feedback to Google about how much and why we hate it and what we would prefer? Apparently the only reason the feature is still around is because some people espouse approval or favor over it. Maybe if we barrage them with the opposite they'll finally get rid of it or give us control over it. Unless, of course, they aren't changing it just because they are being lazy or stubborn, which I'd find hard to believe from an innovator like Google.

This link, http://www.google.com/tools/feedback/intl/en/, describes how to send Google feedback. It's pretty easy though, just click the gear/ settings tab in gmail and then select "Send feedback"

Let the people be heard!

Thank you for that link! I have been trying to find a way to bring this to Google's attention ! If everyone since 2011 writes in, there has got to be some kind of change !

Me too. I don't need my new emails hacked off.

I know this is an old post, but it relates to a problem that has yet to be fixed.

Regardless, I wanted to point out one of the critical areas where Google could stand to improve: not assuming they know what is best - or even what is "normal" or "common".  The statement you made below is totally baseless but represents a significant portion of the culture behind Google that leads to this sort of obnoxious behavior in Google's otherwise useful services.

Google has a misguided sophomoric worldview assuming the experience of a select few individuals represents the experiences of most individuals.  The problem here is that "few" does not equal "most", but the "few" get to decide what the "most" will do - or the "most" have to find a competitor... many do.

In any case - there are myriad examples in both business and personal life where truncating, or trimming portions of an email cause harm and bring no good at all.  This would be true even if the system worked as intended and only truncated repeated text and/or signatures, however, it does not even function in the intended method correctly which makes an already bad idea even worse.

Hopefully a decision-maker somewhere will read this and be benefited by the insight shared here that somehow has been kept outside of the walls of Google's executive offices.

gmail has been truncating my signature. Sometimes my signature doesn't even show up. Will the recipients not see my signature (or the truncated signature)?

It's 2015 and my "Regards" and name are always "hidden" in emails I send. How can this not have been fixed by now!

I do non profit advertising and at times need to print entire emails and I too find it maddening that I can no longer do that because the emails are chopped off.
Re: How do I stop gmail from trimming messages? - it's driving me mad! Jack Chin 6/3/15 3:57 AM
I am reading all these, when a new message from another reader at this moment, comes in.  Guess, this is a serious concern and Google must address it.
My complaint is simpler.  I don't want each and every email I sent out to carry this load of previous email exchanges behind like a big fat tail.  In the past, we can choose whether we want our present email to carry previous email behind or not.  Now, we can NOT!  All emails out, has this "ellipsis" (three dots in a shaded area) in the message.  When I click on it, tons of previous ones I exchanged with the recipient comes on in a shrinked-up form, for me to choose which one I want to go back to.  Most, most, if not all the time, I don't need to refer to what I said before.  Sometimes, yes.  So, why can't (for all parties concerned) to have the option whether I want or don't want, my present message to carry previously exchanged messages.
Now, who doesn't understand this issue.  I know, others have similar but slightly different needs and problems with this "ellipsis" embecile thingy.

Good for you.  Too many people will make the effort to clean up that quoted content.

While there's not a setting, there's an easy way to remove it.  Once the cursor is in the message body area, press down-arrow (selects the  ...  ), the press backspace or delete (deletes it).  Gone.

Personally, I always reply inline (as I am here) with a line or two of quoted content and my response.  If the user wants to see the full content, the can just look at the previous message that they wrote.

Gee!  Thanks a million to u BKC56.  Most helpful.  Just that simple to get rid of that "..." "ellipsis" at the bottom of my email.  Press downward arrow to that elipsis and hit backspace or delete button and it's gone.  Much appreciated.  Good thing I asked and better still, someone like BKC56, actually suggested a simple and easy solution.

Ctrl+A Ctrl+Home when in the body text is a fairly painless workaround.
