I received something that says it is from Google: I just want to find out if it is true? dc7205 9/22/12 11:05 AM
I tried to call and talk to someone about this and found out that the number refers me to google support.  Can someone tell me how to talk to a live person for this promotion.  I have the e-mail that was sent to my e-mail address.

Hi dc7205. I'm betting it told you you won an iPad. If so, It is a scam! The note was not sent by Google--although it might say it was. Google/Gmail will never ask you for your password. There have been lots of problems with people receiving scam notes like that asking them to provide their IDs, passwords, and other personal information. Do not reply to the notes or click any links in them.

The bad guys realize it is getting very tough to hack systems through technical means, so now they go after the weakest link--the users--to try to trick them into giving them the keys to steal their on-line identities--or worse. It is called “phishing.”

The best thing to do is simply click the down arrow next to “Reply” and select “Report phishing.”

The web address is below.  I did not want to download it in case it is a virus.

Did U read the letter?  It did not tell me to give out my password.  But it did tell me to go to something called Google rewards and it is about an IPad 3 or 2 or something.  I wish I could talk to someone at Google, however there is no way to get in touch with them by phone.

Thanks to everyone who responded.  Is there a number to reach Google though?

Hi dc7205. This Help Forum is Google's only support channel for consumer Gmail accounts (ones having email addresses that end with "@gmail.com"). If you would like further assistance, I would be glad to help you. While I am not a Google employee, you can tell by hovering the cursor over the icon next to my nickname that I have been designated by Google as a "Top Contributor," which means that I have been screened by Google and work closely with them.

Hi everyone,

This is definitely a scam. Click the down arrow next to 'Reply' and select 'Report phishing.' This will help our filters learn and prevent these types of messages from reaching your Inbox in the future. I have also passed feedback regarding this scam to our team.

We have great filters, but every now and then one gets by, so clicking "Report spam" or "Report phishing" help us learn so we don't miss these next time.

Best,
SonaD

This email originated from JangoMail's servers. We were made aware of the issue and this "customer" was immediately terminated.  We work very hard to prevent spammers from using our service on a day-to-day basis. One of the benefits of reputable Email Service Providers such as JangoMail is that, when a spammer is identified as coming from their servers, you simply need to forward it to their abuse@ address for their domain. As with other reputable ESPs, it is in the interest of JangoMail and our customers to keep our service spammer-free.  I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Thanks for that comment, Dave. It also suggests why Google is constantly fighting to prevent spam coming from Google accounts. Even reputable email providers can find their services blacklisted if they allow too high a volume of spam relative to valid emails to come out of their servers. That's why Google (and other providers) sometimes have to take actions that prevent users from putting their account at risk--even if the users feel it is their right to put their own accounts at risk.
