I am also having this problem. Only seems to be happening with my newly created second GMail account though. My previous GMail account, also setup via Exchange works fine. Also if I setup the new account through the GMail option instead of Exchange it works ok. Just doesn't seem to work on the exchange, which I want because it has working push notifications.

Same thing has happened to me today. I've restored the phone both as a new phone and using icloud backups and the same thing happens in both cases. My exchange contacts and calendar are working ok, but no gmail.

I am having the exact same issue. Just upgraded my phone from iPhone 4S with the most recent OS. I am now running the iPhone 5 and I get check marks down the line with regards to setup.
I am able to set it up as Gmail, but not through Exchange. I prefer this way, but will use a workaround for the time being.
Hope it's a simple fix.

Google made some changes that prevent new devices from running Exchange (Sync), I suspect all of you are bumping up against this, whether with a new phone or by trying to add another account in a grandfathered one. See the attached reference for more information; if it does *not* apply to you please come back and let me know and I'll pursue it further. I do know that there were some problems with *existing* accounts, but those were supposed to have been fixed.

Hmm, yup, guess that is the case. I had my iPhone 5 replaced yesterday due to an issue with the camera. So if I'm reading that reference correctly, my only option now is the gmail ios app?

Yep, that's what I read. Google removed push notifications from the default mail app on the iPhone. Sounds like its time to go to hotmail!

Actually to clarify, you can still setup your account via the gmail method but the only options available for getting emails from the server will be fetch or manual, which means google just stripped us of the ability to be efficient.

Yeah, guess I will have to have multiple email apps now if i want to keep push notifications for gmail and still use gmail as an email client that is integrated within the OS. Quite annoying. Will be looking for a jailbreak solution while i wait for my Mailbox invitation.

I am totally bummed out by this change. I just reviewed the other solutions, but I suspect the automatic sync feature will be gone? Meaning, if I reply or delete an email on my iPhone, it will sync with my laptop?
Thanks for anyone who can clarify.

They're all still connected to the google email server. They should sync in that regard and be the same between on. The issue was just that they stripped us of the ability to immediately push notifications to our phones via the default mail app.
Hotmail still works fine though.

Here’s how to sync your contacts to your device:
Open the Settings application on your device.
Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Select Add Account...
Select Add CardDAV Account
Fill out your account information in the following fields:
Server: Enter "google.com"
User Name: Enter your full Google Account or Google Apps email address.
Password: Your Google Account or Google Apps password. (If you’ve enabled 2 Step verification, you’ll need to generate and enter an application specific password.)
Description: Enter a description of the account (e.g. Personal Contacts).
Select Next at the top of your screen.
Make sure that the "Contacts" option is turned to ON.
After you've completed setup, open the Contacts app on your device, and syncing will automatically begin.

The CarDAV fix worked seamlessly.
Thank you for help. Issue resolved.

It also works absolutely flawlessly, unlike exchange. I still can't believe people prefer that inferior protocol butchering their contacts and calendars. Makes no sense, whatsoever.

Thanks for the posting.
Just had the exact same issue. Pretty lame on GMail's part.
