I just got new Samsung galaxy S3 and i can't make gmail to do auto sync. very time i need to go into app and push refresh button to get new emails.
Setting verified:

Setings -> Accounts -> My account -> Sync Gmail selected

Gmail -> settings -> my account -> Gmail Sync is ON -> Auto sync is selected

I run Android version 4.1.1
Gmail vesion 4.2.1

I already did factory reset, and data reset from the application menu, and also cache clear. Nothing helps.

I know this is basic, but have you by any chanced used that pull down menu at the top and highlighted the Sync box?  I accidentally turned off sync this way last time and took me forever to figure it out -.-;;
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail cbreeze76 2/4/13 5:56 PM
Wow Thanks. I've been trying to figure that out for months. I've looked all through my settings time and again without luck.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Michael Bridge 2/21/13 10:03 PM
I would love to find an answer to this as it is doing the same thing to me.  Randomly today it just stopped syncing my latest emails and I have done battery pulls, removed email account and reactivated it, reset all data on the gmail app and resynced.  Nothing I have done has worked.  When I open the mail app it loads the message.  But it will not sync with the app closed and notify me.

Also using galaxy s3.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Ray Grose 2/22/13 10:28 AM
If you havent found it already, I found an app that might "help" until a better answer is discovered. Try Synker. You still have to manually kick it off but its better than going into gmail then hitting refresh, especially if you have multiple accounts and an outlook email as well. One button refreshes everything.

I would rather have it fixed though... such a pain....

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Michael Bridge 2/22/13 11:37 AM
What I am having now is that it is syncing, but apparently only every half an hour or hour (I don't know).  So sometimes I get a notification, but then I open my mail box and have 5 emails from the course of the past half hour.  It used to sync in real time, so I can't figure what would have changed.

Same problem here, brand new S3. Annoying as I just got rid of my original Galaxy S, and never had any problems with Gmail on that phone.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail [email address] 3/6/13 12:58 PM
That worked for me. Never noticed a sync option in the pull down menu. Thank you.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Jigalong 3/6/13 4:25 PM
My Samsung S3 has no sync option on the pull down menu. Is this a joke ?
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail M Shelton-Watts 3/7/13 6:30 AM
Just scroll to right.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Jigalong 3/7/13 1:28 PM
When i pull the menu down, reading from the righr, these are my options :

MULTI WINDOW
ALLSHARE CAST
SAVING POWER
BLOCKING MODE
MOBILE DATA
BLUETOOTH
SCREEN ROTATION
SOUNDGPS
WI-FI

as you can see, there is no "SINC" listed which I can activate.

Thanks

Had exactly the same problem and just found how to fix it. Realy simle.
Go to settings then DATA USAGE.
Tap the menu on the bottom left of the screen
Check AUTO SYNC DATA
Job done Billy. Easy peasy if you know where to look for it. I have found it by chance but I hope it helps.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Jigalong 3/9/13 4:29 AM
Billy, your a genius. I see the menu and I have changed the data sync. Thanks heaps.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail semihk 3/11/13 6:52 AM
all sync options checked already.
Some days ago i deleted all my mobile and reinstall ROM and gmail auto sync worked till yesterday.
Yesterday again it stopped. I didnt change any setting and everything same.

I AM SURE THERE IS A PROBLEM IN APP.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Keats Soder 3/11/13 11:15 AM
I had same problem with gmail and mail applications. Called T-Mobile with no help. Called Samsung and rep said never heard of problem! Wen to settings then application manager and then Samsung syncadapt and disabled it and cleared data; also disabled smemo sy... and cleared data.
After reading above I see that pulled down menu on home screen to far right sync is on and under data usage pull up menu auto sync data is on. Sync email is now automatic like at start. Not clear if I could have just selected the last two options.

Hi guys,

Have you tried the sync troubleshooter? I've attached it. Go through those steps to see if that helps.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/12/13 6:50 AM
My S3 was working fine, and just stopped syncing with Gmail last week (Jelly Bean 4.1.2 VZW). Since then it has not synced normally. Most of the time mail will not push to the device when it arrives in the Gmail inbox, but may arrive hours later (maybe, maybe not). Other times, very rarely, it will push normally when it arrives, but this is extremely rare and not consistent. Now, in order to get my mail, I have to go to the Google Account, select the account, and toggle the "Sync Gmail" checkbox (touching "Sync All" also will get mail). Everything else appears to be syncing fine (Calendar, contacts), just Gmail seems to be affected.

This is extremely frustrating and rendering an important device function worthless. I have been through every possible "solution" I can find and nothing corrects the problem. Among the things I have tried: The above referenced "problems syncing Gmail" troubleshooter, Clearing caches and data, reinstalling apps, factory reset, rooting and digging deeper for hidden settings, reinstalling stock factory ROM and essentially starting from "brand new scratch". NOTHING solves the issue, so it can't be in the phone handset itself.

All parameters that need to be ON are ON.

Also to be noted is I have my previous Android phone, and it's doing the same thing too.

So, if the problem is "out there" with you Google, how do I get it fixed? This has been an annoying time waster which has also caused me data loss in the various resetting of the phone.

"Normal" operation prior to this was the device (both devices) received Gmail push seconds (no more than a minute) after it arrived in the Gmail inbox.

PLEASE, help.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail semihk 3/12/13 8:14 AM
jeffs4653 is completely right.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Michael Bridge 3/12/13 8:30 AM
Jeffs4635, this is my exact experience.  Nothing has fixed it.  Sometimes messages push immediately.  Usually they don't.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Ray Grose 3/12/13 8:33 AM
Much the same for me Jeff. I checked everything suggested here and elsewhere and all the settings were correct. My phone has been syncing fine for over 3 months then suddenly stopped. I manually ran syncs for a few days while searching for answers, none that I found provided any solution because as I said most of my settings were as people were recommending.

However several days after the problem started it just went away, almost like there was a glitch on the google side.

What I find odd is there seems to be absolutely no Google person chiming in to help us out. They do support their product dont they?

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/12/13 8:53 AM
In the past hour or so I've tried an experiment. I deleted my account from the phone and added a friends Gmail account (he doesn't use Gmail, just needs it for his Android phone functionality - contacts, etc). So, he let me "borrow" his account for a while. After adding it my phone showed all his contacts (of course) and I started testing Gmail using his address. The phone appeared to sync just fine with every mail I sent, coming through within a minute or two. So once again, it doesn't appear to be the phone.

After an hour of testing (admittedly not long enough) I went back to my account. However, I did one more thing, I went into my Gmail account on the desktop and purged everything. There is nothing so important that I need to keep it, and I must get this functionality working again, so it's worth the attempt.

I'll follow up again.

"Do they support their product don't they?"

That's a good question...

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/12/13 11:50 AM
Wiping my Gmail account of every message did not solve the problem. Four (4) messages are sitting in my inbox and they are not pushing to the phone. So, problem still lives.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Jes Møller Christensen 3/12/13 3:09 PM
Hello there. Do you have the problems when you use the gmail app or the other standard email app or with both ? I only have the problem When I use the standard email app, but not with the gmail app. I prefer to use the other because I like When the app shows the number of emails in my inbox. Can anyone please fix the problem ?
.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/13/13 5:05 AM
Gmail app. Have not tried using the standard Email app, and would rather not do Gmail using that.

And no, it's not fixed yet.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Levolorman1 3/13/13 8:57 PM
Thanks!  This solved my problem.  The guy from AT&T had me looking for things in menus that don't exist.  Then removing and reinstalling the accounts.  I wish I had checked here first.  It would have saved me much aggravation.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/14/13 6:17 AM
I tried setting up the standard EMAIL app for my Gmail account and it works. Messages arrive, but the minimum poll time is every 15 minutes, so the "immediacy" of pushed Gmail is LOST.

This is an unacceptable solution.

Does Google not check here? Is the NO support? There is clearly something wrong with my Gmail account. The problem follows the account to other devices. There has to be some person within this huge anonymous conglomerate that can fix this issue.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/15/13 1:20 PM
Gmail is also working OK with the K9 email app. But like the stock email app, these are PULL apps, not push. So in order to have "immediacy" I must constantly poll the server and use small amounts of data from my plan, which over the course of a month (with a 1 minute poll) looks like it will be about 60 megs of simply polling for mail, not the mail itself. OK, it won't kill my data plan, but it's a WASTE.

Google? Hello?

Have the same problem for a month. just fixed it last night. I don't exactly know what the problem was. I have tried to flash a lot of custom rom even back to stock rom. but the problem still there. I just follow the instruction one by one in this forum. problem still there.
simply what i was doing are:
1. open gmail using desktop view
2. click contact. view all contact.
3. I found duplicating contacts were there.
4. Delete all duplicating contacts
5. in the same time my device was sync google contact.
6. try to add contact. autosync worked well.
7. recheck on  gmail. the contact already sync as well.
8. done. and no problem persist until this morning.

probaly this was the cause: previously I installed 4.2.1 gapps for my revolt 4.2.2 rom. JB gapps 4.2.2 is available now.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail EStewy 3/18/13 8:13 AM
Same here jeffs4653.  I've been pulling my hair out in the last week or so cause of this problem.  Looking for solution too.  This is a real problem and has nothing to do with sync settings on the phone.

Edit:  I will add that mail is being pushed to my phone, but folder updates (like deleting messages etc.) are not.  Until about a week ago I could delete a message on my desktop and the message and notification would almost instantly disappear from my phone.  for some reason this is no longer the case.

This is the exact issue I am having.
I have a S3, Droid Razr Maxx and a Galaxy Tab 10.1, none of them are syncing folders as mentioned in this post.
It is on the gmail server side, not our phones / tablets.
Please someone find a fix.

Yup, I was hoping they would sneak a fix in with the gmail update yesterday, but no such luck.
So annoying...

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail HangingJudge 3/19/13 8:37 AM
Update didn't fix for me either. Seems like google stopped pushing read flag, deletes, archives, etc from the server.  This is why I went with android and gmail!  Please fix
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/19/13 1:21 PM
There is no fix for this because the fix is on Google's side, and until Google at least acknowledges there is a problem, there is going to be no solution.

Last week I found a form for reporting problems. I haven't even had the courtesy of a reply. This is what you get from a company that gives away "free" applications - no support. As long as the app as a whole works for the majority and they make their advertising dollars, the minority with a problem can pound salt.

What about this "Brittany Bee" who claims to be a Google employee? I guess she just trolls the forums popping in "whenever" and leaving canned replies, like "Did you try the sync troubleshooter?". Kind of insulting.

The new Gmail app that was pushed today didn't fix it either, but I didn't expect it would since the problem is not on this end.

So the problem, the frustration, the anger, continues...

Genius really! using galaxy 1 and in "data usage" need to left click in order to get into menu then click on auto sync
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail EStewy 3/19/13 1:57 PM
The worst part (other than broken gmail) is that every time someone posts in this discussion about broken gmail, I get an email... that reminds me of MY BROKEN GMAIL!  arggg!
I'll bet (I hope!) one day we all wake up and the problem is fix without so much as a peep out of Google.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail HangingJudge 3/19/13 2:07 PM
Nah...I am only reminded when I delete these messages from my desktop and the message and notification stay on my phone.  Oh wait that's the same thing.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Louis Bouchard 3/19/13 2:22 PM
I have the same problem.. I tried *all* the proposed fixes, and google's troubleshooting guide.  To no avail.

for now, I just turn sync off and on from the pull-down status screen.

It seems it might be tied to certain accounts?

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/19/13 4:00 PM
Yes, it seems to be only with certain accounts. I tried a friends account on my phone for a day and it worked perfectly. When I switched back to mine, the problem returned. It's associated with the account.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Roy Zito 3/22/13 12:51 PM
this worked perfectly. Thanks
Don't know how it got shut off in the first place, but this fixed it.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail EStewy 3/22/13 1:16 PM
Any attempt to help is always a nice gesture so thank you.  But this is not a settings issue on the phone.  I am particularly frustrated that a "google employee" would choose this as a "best answer" given the clear descriptions of the problem in some of these posts.  My phone is syncing mail, but for some unknown reason Google has stopped syncing deletes and reads on my account (and many others apparently).  The same issue is occurring on my girlfriend's account too.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/23/13 10:32 AM
I have not received any "synched" mail in 36 hours. There are clearly dozens of emails sitting in my Gmail inbox, yet the phone just doesn't receive them.

I am particularly frustrated that ANY "google employee" doesn't even bother to check back here, or even look here to see what's going on.

I am still running an experiment with the K9 mail client, and I find that if I have K9 set to "Background Sync Always" and "Poll Never" that it works just like the Gmail app. Mail may or may not arrive. Sometimes regularly and reliably, then for no reason hours of nothing. However, if i also set the poll frequency to something other than "never" (I used 1 minute), then I get mails if they are waiting. However this chews up the battery, and uses about 2mb of data a day just for the polls, so I turned it off.

I doubt it's worth it, but Google does post a phone number for itself. I wonder if calling and trying to work your way to someone a) who cares, b) who knows anything, would be worth the trouble.

There is no way to email "Brittany Bee" from the post above. It appears the only way to contact here would be to join Google+, and I refuse to join Google+ (or Facebook). You would think that Google employees would need to have their email forward facing, but I guess not.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Andy Dickson 3/23/13 5:37 PM
I'd been wondering why I wasn't getting notifications and had to keep refreshing my e-mail also.  I'd been just dealing with it thinking that it might have been something to do with the Android 4 updates.  Thank you very much!!  Such a simple resolution, but I didn't even think about it.  Not a place on my phone that I usually access.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Brad Wyatt 3/25/13 10:11 AM
I'd just like to add my frustrations to this topic.

I am an IT professional and we have around 15 Galaxy S3s here where I work and each and every one of them has this same issue. For a business that relies on speedy communication via email it's an unacceptable fault that should be escalated to the upper echelons of Google/Android support to be resolved.

I've had one of the devices sent down to Samsung HQ here in the UK and they've assured me the handset is working fine; they've categorically told me it's not the fault of the Galaxy S3 hardware itself.

So that leaves the network and Google. I use an iPhone 5 on the same network (T Mobile) and have my Google Apps account set up via ActiveSync and emails arrive straight away all the time, even if I have low signal so I am inclined to not blame T Mobile for these issues.

I am more than aware of the merits of a good old 'off and on' but it's simply not a solution. Here's what I've tried, all to no avail:

- On and off.
- Account removal and re-adding.
- Cache clearing/data clearing.
- Full power off (battery, SIM and SD Card removal)
- Factory reset, all settings erased
- Different Gmail accounts
- Different locations
- Checked Data Usage settings to ensure sync is on/background data is not disabled etc

Even on WiFi this issue persists to a degree.

Push email needs to push; it needs to arrive at the handset without user intervention. This isn't happening.

PLEASE look into it!

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail EStewy 3/25/13 10:25 AM
I hear you Brad,

The title of this thread is unfortunate since the problem is with Google/gmail and not the device.  One a positive note, two weeks ago there was very little discussion of this exact problem on line.  Now if you search for it in the last week it is very common.  Hopefully Google will fix their broken email soon.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail HangingJudge 3/27/13 6:18 AM
Anyone else with this updating of deletes, archives, read flag, etc using imap client on their desktop?  I have been using outlook 2007 and having the problem.  I stopped using outlook and only use gmail web app on the desktop and updates are working quickly.

My wife is still using outlook and still has the problem on hers.

This is not ideal solution but would be interesting if this is a coincidence or if there is something to it.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/27/13 7:01 AM
@HangingJudge,

I have found sort of a pattern over the past week that may be similar to what you just asked.

I use Gmail on my home desktop through Thunderbird using Imap. My Gmail address is NOT my primary email address. My primary is different, and I receive all my mail through Thunderbird via POP on my desktop and then copy the message(s) from my primary email address inbox to my Gmail inbox at the time they are received. This is so I can get them on my Android phone. At the time I did this 4 years ago, the POP Email client (EMAIL app) supplied with Android were buggy and didn't work properly, so I devised this workaround to use Gmail. I have Gmail configured so if I send an email from the Gmail app, it uses my other email address (my primary) as the FROM: address. No one ever sees my Gmail address.

For the past 4 years this has worked flawlessly. When the message was copied to the Gmail inbox on Thunderbird, it immediately appeared on the Gmail app on the phone. Sync was push, 100%, and on time.

Several weeks ago this apparently stopped working.

I have found the following:
- If email is sent directly to my Gmail address, my Gmail app on the S3 receives the push immediately (99% of the time).
- If the Email is copied into the Gmail inbox on the Thunderbird Imap client, then the S3 does NOT receive the message via push anymore. This seem to totally violate what SYNC means!

Using the K9 Imap client on my S3 phone:
- ALL Emails (99% of the time) are received via push to K9 regardless of how they got into the Gmail inbox.

As you can see, something has changed on the back end. It appears that copying unread messages into the Gmail inbox on an Imap client no longer gets pushed to the Gmail app on an Android phone.

I doubt my scenario is a common one, and it seems that the other complaints here would tend to indicate that people are using their Gmail address as their primary and not getting push sync. Nevertheless, I wanted to explain what I have found over the past week.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail EStewy 3/27/13 7:18 AM
Well, I've been using outlook 2013.  i just tried what you suggested (using the web app) and it worked... once?!
-Sent a message to myself from a different computer and account,
-outlook was closed, but the web app and my phone received it right away,
-deleted the message on the web app and my phone notification disappeared (good)
-did it a second time and it didn't work ! (???)
- sent the message a third time and opened it in the web app.
- outlook updated right away, but my phone took a while.
-sent the message a fourth time and opened it in outlook
- it didn't update in the web app until I refreshed
-even after refreshing in the web app the message does not delete on my phone

Maybe there is some tinkering going on behind the curtains now or something:  I did the above a few more times and the results are totally inconsistent.
For me personally, I think this is a combination of not fully understanding how this all works and some sore of problem or change in the way google is working.
I'm confused and frustrated still.  A month ago all this worked perfect - exactly as I would expect it too.  Now it seems to be a mess.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail HangingJudge 3/27/13 7:33 AM
Same results here at first but with outlook closed down and no longer sending/receving, it became almost 100%. Just deleted this message in my inbox on gmail web and within a second it was gone from android.  I don't know if gmail servers are quirky when outlook does its send and receive to get folder message counts.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail EStewy 3/27/13 7:50 AM
Yes,  Very weird.  I just did the same thing again with Outlook closed and it all works as it should (bit slow at the moment but working)

What is that all about?  How is Outlook screwing things up?  IT's as though the flag sent from Outlook doesn't work but interferes with subsequent flags from the web app.... IS that correct???

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/27/13 7:52 AM
I may have spoke too soon.

I have had Gmail and K9 apps running concurrently on the S3, and it was in this scenario that I described the above. About an hour ago I shut off the background sync on K9 so now just Gmail is receiving. Well guess what? Gmail is NOT receiving push anymore regardless of whether the emails are received directly to the Gmail address or copied to the inbox in the Imap client. Yet all of the Gmail app's sync setting are ON as they always have been.

It's almost as if K9 was "tickling" the Gmail server to push properly to the Gmail app.

I'm going to let this run a few more hours like this and see if the Gmail app fails to sync, then I'll turn the K9 sync back on and see if Gmail starts receiving again.

This is very weird.

I really wish SOME GOOGLE EMPLOYEE could check in here and read this and get it to the people who can DO SOMETHING or PROVIDE ANSWERS.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail HangingJudge 3/27/13 8:07 AM
Jeff,

It is possible your k9 is polling imap just like outlook in our situation.  Honestly, your use is too complex to get a resolution easily from a google employee.  Test using the gmail web client and the gmail app with all others closed down to see if you experience the same phenomenon that we are. If that works then we can narrow it down to imap clients polling gmail messing up gmail app on android.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/27/13 8:11 AM
K9 is an Imap client. Only the Gmail app uses whatever mail protocol Google uses between the two (looks like something called "OAuth").

Yes, I realize my complexity layer is different, but it seems that when I shut off the Imap client on the phone, Gmail stops syncing.

The Gmail desktop reflects everything I do on the phone. It I delete, they disappear in a few moments.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail EStewy 3/27/13 8:43 AM
Well I can say with confidence now that Outlook is somehow screwing up google's system of pushing.  Everything works if Outlook is off (although it is really slow for me today).
when I have Outlook on and read a new message the web app does not update until I refresh (maybe that is normal)  BUT, if the message was originally opened in Outlook, even after the web app is refreshed, the info is not sent to my phone.
Maybe that was clear from my last message, but I was still a little unsure.  I'm not now.
What a pain.
I too wish someone from Google with some REAL sense of how this all works and why we are having problems now would chime in.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Brad Wyatt 3/27/13 9:04 AM
FYI, Outlook (and desktop mail clients in general) doesn't factor in our environment whatsoever; we're totally Google Apps based and this issue remains.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail HangingJudge 3/27/13 9:18 AM
Is everyone running 4.3.1?  While I do think this is a server issue, it is possible that my issue could be resolved by the update yesterday and/or removing outlook from the equation.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail EStewy 3/27/13 9:31 AM
Do you mean 4.3.1 of the gmail app?  I have 4.3.  I don't see a 4.3.1 in Play.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/27/13 10:03 AM
@Brad Wyatt,

I'm glad to hear that. I didn't think my findings were strictly related to me. I was sure "pure Gmail" users were still seeing the issue and you've verified it.

@EStewy,

How does Outlook work with Gmail?

@HangingJudge,

4.3.1

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail HangingJudge 3/27/13 10:15 AM
Yes of the Gmail app. Funny mine says 4.3.1 but my wife's says 4.3
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail EStewy 3/27/13 10:20 AM
@jeffs4653,
Gmail used to work with Outlook just fine. Everything synced (mail, reads deletes) just fine until approximately a month ago.  Now it seems to interfere - that is, when it is open it still receives new mail fine, but does not properly communicate reads and deletes any more.  If I open or refresh the gmail web app it will update to reflect whatever I did in outlook BUT, it never gets sent to my phone then.  If I leave outlook off everything works fine.
Is that what you were asking?

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/27/13 10:47 AM
#EStewy,

Actually I was asking "how" Outlook works with Gmail, as in "how do you configure Outlook to use Gmail?"

I think of "outlook" as the program I use here at work for corporate mail (Outlook 2007), not to be confused with the "outlook web mail service" just started by Microsoft 6 months ago.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail HangingJudge 3/27/13 11:07 AM
Jeff,

Outlook works ok, not great with gmail.  Imap works but not perfectly.  It is generally slow, but not horrible.  I have written code and created buttons to work with the archive, trash functions.  If you delete in outlook it will archive in gmail.  I created a button with code to mark a message read and send to trash for deletes. see attached picture. I also created spam and not spam buttons.  The archive button in the picture is just the delete button renamed.

I found a good free app to sync contacts, but the google calendar sync works for appointments.

Really wish gmail would create a good offline gmail app.  I keep outlook because I use the calendar invitation system in outlook.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/27/13 11:30 AM
So it appears all our various uses of Gmail, from pure "Gmail" to Thunderbird (Imap), Outlook (Imap), and others have simply gone "wonky" in the past few weeks with no explanation of why.

But it still seems to center around the synchronization of the Android Gmail app against the Gmail server.

Hi Jeff,
Sorry for the delayed response to your question. I think the others have mostly answered it now though.  See HangingJudge's reply - although I never had much trouble with speed.  when it was working it was pretty quick most of the time.
The account settings I've always used are in the screen shot I attached here.  I don't know if that answers your question any better.  Honestly I'm no expert on these matters.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Kris Howatt 3/27/13 5:13 PM
Read through all the threads here, and am having the same trouble with my HTC Inspire.
105mb free space
Started having trouble not syncing on March 18 - (working fine for months prior to that)
all the sync settings are the same - nothing changed
Have tried clearing cache numerous times
replies sent from phone are not sending
version 2.3.6 updated March 26 - no difference
Can see in inbox tally that new notes are there, but not showing up in the list
Label is set for "inbox"
Hotmail app works just fine for Outlook (syncs)
Can't delete main gmail account - tied to other apps
Deleted and reinstalled 2nd gmail account - no difference
AT&T (carrier) was no help with phone - made it worse

Bottom line - something is not working, and it doesn't appear to be restricted to just one phone type.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail EStewy 3/28/13 7:17 AM
I thought I would point the people in this thread to another more recent thread dealing with the same issue:
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/gmail/computer-email-program-please-specify-apple-mail-outlook-thunderbird-etc/bUDAsa_2YBg
I think it might prove to be more informative because there seems to be less confusion about the problem in the other thread.  Also, no so-called "google employee" has claimed to 'answer' or 'solve' the problem in the other thread.  This particular thread/question is marked as 'answered'.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail JasonBailey 3/28/13 9:44 AM
I have been having this problem as well but finally fixed it today.

Here is what worked for me:

Go to Settings > Data Usage
Scroll down and click on Gmail icon
Screen changes to show Gmail data usage for current period
Click on menu button and make sure the Auto Sync Data box is checked
Then click on View App Settings bar
click on the e-mail account you are working with
Click on line that says Gmail sync is on
When the box pops up CLICK ON THE GOOGLE ICON with your Gmail address (this is what I had been missing before)
This will then allow you to change all the sync settings for this account (Calendar, Contacts, Gmail, etc.)

It has worked for me for the last 30 minutes. I will see if it holds up.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/29/13 11:19 AM
It's back to fully NOT working under any circumstances. The only way o get mail into the phone app is to press the sync icon. This. really. sucks.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail EStewy 3/29/13 12:54 PM
That does suck.  I'm sorry to hear that.  No problem like that for me.  I'm still in the situation where, as long as Outlook is closed everything works as it should.  I'm really hating using web mail though.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 3/29/13 1:02 PM
The thing is, every day is different. One day it's almost fine, then the next it doesn't work at all.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail paljacob 4/4/13 8:55 AM
There is no sync box on my Note2, running android 4.1.2. Problem finally solved by installing a very small and adds free app called "Widget Sync". Then you are able to put it on one off your screens and turn sync on.

This must be an android bug with the 4.1.2 or something! I remember that I had the option in the settings on  previously versions.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail paljacob 4/4/13 9:32 AM
SOLUTION!!!
Install "Widget Sync" (a very small and adds free app).
Put it on one of your screens and turn sync on.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 4/4/13 10:12 AM
While I'm not sure this is a global solution, or my solution, searching for "Widget Sync" in the Play Store has no direct match. Please be more specific. Like correct app name, and it's author.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 4/5/13 7:25 AM
Strange as it may sound, but I'm think I'm seeing "back to normal" operation today, after it not working for three weeks. No changes on my side.

I'll be monitoring my emails to see if this is the case.

Remember too, if this issue was indeed a problem on the back end [to which it never acknowledged] that a fix to the back end for whatever was "broke" would just as secretive and unacknowledged.

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail jeffs4653 4/8/13 5:17 AM
My sync problems have gone away. Everything is working normally again. Messages appear on the phone as soon as they appear in the Gmail inbox, whether received as an email, or moved to the Gmail inbox via Thunderbird (as I explained earlier). Whatever caused this problem, Google apparently fixed it, silently, and without acknowledgement.

Let's hope it stays this way, It's going to take a while for me to get my confidence back that it's working 100% of the time.

People who leave messages like "you are my hero", "Thanks this worked" or "your solution worked" ARE NOT helping those that come after you or even those before you who still have the problem.

What helped? What did you do?

What solution? What did you do?

This thread has listed a number of issues from back-end server problems (my issue, where I did NOTHING, it just started working again after four weeks) to others trying a multitude of things.

So come one people, if you think you fixed it, or had something set wrong or off, please say what you did.

hey jeff

man I must salute your patience (:
I have been facing this same situation for a long time now. tried all the ways people mentioned but nothing works out. Now my problem is even worse both my email app and gmail app dont sync :(
and to be honest with you google employees would not bother to even check threads like this till higher level poeple post in like level 15 level 20 etc. We are just like novoice people for them. and as you said minority would pound salt, thats the exact phrase for people like us who suffer.
I asked my cousin who used to work for google for years. she laughed when I told google dont respond to threads like this ever. hope thats enough for us to understand what its like. isnt it?
majority of people dont even use droids for official purpose, so for them its just show business and problems like this dont even bother them. But for people in our clan, this is a big deal.
Hope this thing works. I am highly frustrated with this issue.
Goodluck mate. And if you find any solution do post here.
God bless (:

The Problem does not go away with many fixes posted here. I just want to share an additional observation. This problem is observed more on mobile network. If I connect to Wifi then suddenly all mails come and sync starts working normally. Has anyone observed the same?

I have a similar issue except that I have the galaxy S2 LTE running Jelly Bean.
I have tried all solutions posted here but my gmail still doesn't Auto-sync regularly if I am using data. I would be lucky if my gmail auto-syncs once or twice a day. Everything, on the other hand works fine when I am on Wifi.
I have been having this issue for several weeks now and I can't for the life of me figure out what's going on

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Brad Wyatt 5/1/13 7:43 AM
IT'S THE NETWORK

As per my posts above, we had this issue on all 15 of our Galaxy S3 devices. After resets, reboots, sending one of them off to Samsung and literally everything under the sun you can do on the handset it did not work.

Until the network 'changed some details on the tariff' and boom, they all now work and push successfully all around the UK.

Call your operator and push them to fix it, I am pretty confident the problem will be with them.

Hi all.

After hours of searching through forums I think I've finally cracked it.
This is what worked for me..

I went to settings, then data usage, then went into each app info, scrolled to the bottom of the page, and made sure "restrict background data" was NOT ticked.

What I found is that for some strange reason, after the last JB update, some android services were restricted.
I switched wifi off, made sure sync was on, sent a few msgs from another account.. and boom! Messages popped up in no time.

Hope this is the solution to a very frustrating problem!

I found something that worked for me.

Like everyone else with an S3, I have Sync and auto-Data sync set in the OS, but while digging though Gmail app settings, I found yet another place to check syncing!
At inbox, from lower lefthand menu button open Settings, tap on your email address, and you will see "Sync Gmail" mine was alas unchecked! By default! (New phone).
back out to Inbox and sure enough there it goes about syncing.
Jeez.

Now...

Where the heck in Home button on this S3 brick? Do I really need to hit back a dozen times when I'm deap into something?

Is there such a thing as Undo in gmail when I fat-finger while in a hurry select & overtype the long thing I just wrote? Uhgh.

And what needs to happen for my gmail contacts to sync with the phone-based contacts?

Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail prince mercury 5/18/13 12:48 AM
hi there,

in case you have been struggling as those posted by jeffs4653 earlier in this forum (e.g., see from March 12th to April 8th),
or as those posted by naptimezzz in another forum ( https://productforums.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/gmail/oHZ-3Qrzsus ) .
The following solution may help you to get back your Gmail auto sync on track.

Using the following solution, my Gmail auto sync comes back to life in only about 24 hours ... (Between May 16th and 17th)

Judging from the posts from the aforementioned two forums, I hypothesize that possibly somehow for a particular Gmail account, there could Have Been one occasion that the sync messed up into an infinite do-loop.  After the mess-up, the more we try to do the (automatic) sync, the longer the infinite do-loop will grow ... .

I further assume that there should be a default automatic mechanism in Gmail server that will clean-up the infinite do-loop, but after certain amount of time, e.g., after 24 hours.  And, this certain amount of time will start over and over again whenever we try to do manual or automatic sync for that particular Gmail account on our Android cell phone.

As a result, in order to solve this kind of problem, we should Entirely stop using this particular Gmail account at all in all mobile devices for at least 24 hours.  And then re-connect it to see if the problem persists.

To completely disconnect a particular Gmail account from the Android, at least to disconnect it from my Samsung Galaxy S3, here is what I have done:

*** Press "Home" physical button --> Press "Menu", i.e., the left touch-screen button --> "Setting" --> "Account" --> Google --> Tap to choose the account to be removed --> Tap "Remove Account" on the bottom right corner.

*** Repeat the above step for Removing All Google Accounts on the cell phone.

*** Press "Home" physical button --> Press "Menu", i.e., the left touch-screen button --> "Setting" --> "Apps Manager" --> Choose Gmail --> "Clear up Data".

*** Repeat the above step for clearing up data of "Google Play Services" , "Google Play Store".

*** Shut down the cell phone.

*** Open a Web Browser on PC to individually login all the Google accounts that have been removed from the cell phone.  In each Google account, click "Account" for more settings --> Security --> Under "Connected applications and sites" --> "Manage access" --> Click "Revoke Access" for All "Android Login Service".

*** Turn the cell phone back on.

*** Login Gmail  and/or "Play Store", ONLY with the Google accounts that still can automatically sync.

*** Do Not use that problematic Google account anymore on the cell phone, for at least 24 hours.

*** After at least 24 hours, try to login Gmail on the cell phone with that problematic Google account, and then test it and pray for positive results ... .

Good Luck !

My S3 suddenly stopped automatically refreshing both of my gmail accounts after working for over 3 months.  Both my exchange and yahoo accounts were working fine.

I attempted the solution posted by Prince Mercury on May 18th after attempting all other solutions I found (removing accounts, battery, uninstalling updates, checking sync settings, etc, etc) with no success.

The 24 hour waiting period was painful since neither of my accounts were syncing, but worth it as syncs are working automatically again.

Hope this helps someone.

Thank you SOOOOOOO much!  IDK how in the world that happened.  It used to auto sync all the time, then upon the last software update it quit.  I must have accidentally hit that sync button on the pull down menu. I did have to go in and reset the default ringtone.  It had started telling me "phone call from Angle Smith" instead of ringing or "text message from Craig Cummings"...  It was driving my hubby crazy.  He just got his last week and I set it up for him.   I'll have to go check the sync button.
Thanks again very much!!!

When you pull down the menu across the top will be written
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Sound, Screen Rotation, Airplane mode, Power saving, Driving mode, AllShare Cast, Multi window, Sync
Below that will be the line that shows how bright your screen is,
Below that will be your mobile account,
Then Calls will be made over... (Tap here to access preferences)
NOTIFICATIONS
various things like if you have something from facebook, twitter, email, weather, etc
Note just run your finger down the top to bottom of your screen from the home page.
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail Cricket Wood 6/16/13 8:27 PM
NOPE - on each account you can set how often you want it to sync.  Otherwise it will do them all.

FIX: On Galaxy S3 as well. Doesn't make much sense but I fixed it by opening contacts, pull up the menu, selected "accounts", there you have a pop-up menu that I couldn't find anywhere else with a list of accounts. On top, a checkbox with "auto-sync accounts". I checked that and when going back to settings > accounts and Google, sync is enabled.

I have had the same problem with my new Note 2...until now :)) I followed the instructions below from BrittanyBee about the sync troubleshooter and it worked!. When I got to the 'make sure autosync is enabled' section on my phone :I had to go settings-accounts-email and at the bottom there is a 'sync all button...tap that and voila! my email automatically syncs now...for the first time ever . Hopefully it will stay that way.

I have been having the same problem my gmail will not sync.  I have tried all of googles suggestions and the ones listed.  Still my email stops syncing.  T mobile no help, google no help.  Really?? Is it that hard to get this to work.  I have done everything and finally I dropped the phone and the battery fell out Voila, the email synced!

I just switched to a Samsung Galaxy SIII and had this same issue. I use a lot of labels in Gmail and have mail bypass my inbox. I didn't receive any notifications on mail going to any labels, just the main inbox. I found that I had to set each individual label's sync and notifications. I just opened one of the labels, then clicked settings and found options for sync and notifications for that label. I had to do this for all 37 of my labels but now everything is working great.

Thank you, Jang-Ho Kwon.  My phone was recently updated and added "Multi-Window", etc.  I must have hit the sync button by mistake when checking out the other new items.  I've been looking at every menu possible to find out what I did wrong and you gave me the answer.  Thank you again.

Best wishes,
John Derickson

Thank you!!! I never even thought to look there...this has been a periodic issue for me, usually when I run my battery so low that it flashes red and virtually shrieks "plug me in now!"...there must be a setting somewhere that shuts off the sync. I find it strange that it's only my Gmail that's affected. Anywho, thanks!!!
Re: Samsung galaxy s3 will not auto sync gmail M Y 11/15/13 1:18 PM
I might be posting very late on this but I just encountered the same issue. All of a sudden, Gmail stopped syncing.

I followed the sync trouble shooter as BrittanyBee suggested and none of the options worked except the very last one when Google support gave up.

https://support.google.com/mail/troubleshooter/2650727?rd=2#ts=3258921,3259228,3258934,3258936,3258937,3258943,3259247,3258925

Basically try clearing your Gmail App data by going to Settings --> Application Manager --> Gmail --> Clear Data --> Restart phone (also send your self an e-mail in the meantime from another device). Once the device starts (give it a couple minutes) and it should start syncing.

Thanks BrittanyBee
