An ex-boyfriend is sending harassing email messages. If I just block or spam his email address, he'll open up another account and hit me from there. If I'm able to block his IP, he won't be able to send me email from any account, correct?

No, gmail doesn't provide IP address blocking. And it probably wouldn't be effective anyway since most people can easily change their IP address.

Create a filter to delete his mails and don't bother looking for them.

Are you using the web interface? If so, then then answer is no. However, if you are using a third party MUA, such as MS Outlook, Becky, Claws-Mail, etc. then there are several options available to you. Please post back with specifics on how you access your email and I can assist you further.

Thanks everyone. I do use web-based gmail. Bummer. I'll just have to continue to filter these messages to the trash.

Ubermother - in case you're still reading, I urge you to keep the emails that your ex is sending you. In the event that the harassment escalates, you might need them as "evidence" later on as you take legal steps to protect your safety.
Certainly feel free to ignore them, though; they will eventually stop.

my ex keeps opening up email accounts in my name cause I blocked his name from coming into my inbox... How can I stop him from opening up email accounts in my name.
This guy needs to go to jail but its not a crime for what he is doing to me... He wont go away...
He wont stop emailing me from different accounts. He wont go away.

You can find the IP by clicking on where it says reply at the top there is a drop down list which if you click Show Original it shows the headers. Takes time to learn how to read headers how ever. I am still learning and only stumbled across this thread because I was looking into how to block IP's as well (spam that I can't seem to stop from coming in and also sometimes even spoofing my email address). Annoying. This is why free email services are never as good as paid ones..

Kidneycorner, it says Show Details, not Show Original.
